Honestly I could never understand the concepts behind remaking an original classic and then saying, do not compare it’s a different movie. I mean comparisons are bound to happen when you make a remake. This time it was the 90s cult classic Amitabh Bachhan starrer ‘Agneepath’ which was being remade. The original one was simply exhilarating and delivers big time thanks to some great acting performances. It fetched Amitabh Bachhan his first National Award as a best actor and the performance deserved it. Now, coming back to the remake, it’s a mix of old hindi movies and the new ones.

The whole environment has been stylized and the movie tries to portray a different experience overall. The suits and the style from the original is not present. This one is just raw and full of action. Hrithik Roshan dons the avatar of an angry young man named Vijay Chauhan and belongs from a small island Mandva. His father is a teacher at a primary school there and tries to develop the area by starting up a salt factory. He is opposed by the landlord’s son Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) and Kancha succeeds in his evil plan to topple the teacher and start cultivating drugs in Mandva. Thus, begins the story of revenge and in my honest opinion by the end, it feels to drag too much.

Hrithik Roshan looks good in his act with teared eyes and normal clothes but he lacked the intensity in his eyes to play a character which was portrayed amazingly well by Big B. He looks fine in all the action sequences and delivers a good performance overall. Sanjay Dutt in his Kancha act is the weakest link in the movie. His black robes and grins could not make him as deadly as portrayed. Although, there was a lot of hangings done by him in the movie but it doesn’t instigate an evil feeling from him. Dutt’s dialogue delivery was very poor and it seemed to take the shine off from the character. The surprise package of the movie was a new character, the evil ‘Rauf Lala’ depicted on-screen by Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor was ruthless and looked quite good in comparison to Kancha in the story. It has to be one of the best villain acts in recent times. He even looked good in the stunt sequences and action scenes. All the other performances were mediocre and everyone did justice with whatever they got.

The direction of the movie was good in some action sequences and the camera angles were used in a good manner. Although, Sanjay Dutt should have got some other camera angles as well except the back shot and a close-up, there was many more possibilities. The action director did a fair job in all the sequences. The screenplay and the story of the film felt a bit confused and it was just dragging along a lot of times.

The music in the film seems too irritating as none of the songs are needed according to the script. They just felt like they have been added out of a necessity to add songs. The audio songs were fine and the music is good but the movie could not do justice with it. The background score of the movie was just too loud and kept on telling the audience how they should feel in a particular scene.

Overall, the new Agneepath started off like the original and then after some time turned into a crime and underworld movie which was followed by a family drama and by the end, it turned into a superhero movie with ‘a classic era of Hindi cinema’-like end where the hero just doesn’t die.

In my opinion, people who are yet to watch it, please be known to the fact that it’s just inspired by the old Agneepath with a lot of different masala to offer. Just don’t think about the original too much and you might just like it.

In the end, I just want to say what I felt strongly, I missed the character of ‘Krishnan Iyer M.A.’ from the original as to me it was a wonderful effort on part of Mithun to play that character with such finesse and ease.

This version is for all those action fans out there that were missing an all-action flick which is watchable for quite some time.

Just outta Agneepath and without further ado…I’d say that its a well made remake. Flawed at times but made with passion.

I remember watching the original when I was a kid and the surma & white suit worn badass ‘Vijay Dheenanath Chavan’ still remains afresh in my mind. Mukul Anand’s original is indeed a cult classic which even got Amitabh Bacchan a National Award.

Fast forward to the remake and the first thing I missed out is the essential flair and ‘anti-protagonism’ of the Amitabh in Hrithik. The surma’s gone so is the white outfit so as to make it appeal to the contemporary. Hrithik did his best to rejuvenate the new Vijay incorporating an angelic/innocence in the revenge-ridden character.
Sanjay Dutt’s Kancha is very intimidating and could easily pull of a desi ‘Bane’. Uttering pure evil and Mahabharath-esque quotes at times, the new Kancha is a force to reckon with. Though his lines, towards the end, gets monotonous and exhaustive. Rishi Kapoor impressed me in the villainous role of Rauf Lala, Vijay’s ‘red carpet to getting revenge’. I dont remember him playing a more negative role than this in recent times…and stole every scene he was in.
Priyanka Chopra is there, being uber cute, to please some eyes. Katrina Kaif’s ‘Chikni Chameli’, to my surprise, made an almost fullhouse audience (who were restless the entire time) silent and gaping at the screen.

The songs were hummable especially ‘Gun Gun Re’ and the main theme oozed revenge and style. Brownie points to the cinematography…it made an otherwise grim movie colorful and well lit.

I previously mentioned that Agneepath had its flaws the first one being that its too melodramatic. Clocking close to 3 hours its was tedious to sit through numerous ‘emotional’ scenes. Yes it did work in the original Agneepath coz it was essential at the time though its a test of patience in the new one. Justifications could be so that producer Karan Johar wanted to make it stay true to the original but the story itself is loosely based on the original and many portions were reconstructed…and that’s another flaw. The original had a very simple & followable plot though the reconstruction made this one a bit ‘knotty’. Proper editing could have saved a great lot!

Comparisons aside, Agneepath is a well restored classic…sincerely following, not imitating, the grand original and thus it works almost as an homage. Its hard to get over the awesomeness of the original but this is “as Bollywood as it gets”.

Another remake of a sensational Bollywood blockbuster of 90’s, Agneepath will be another name in the list of remakes this year.  Beside Agneepath, Don2 will also be on cinemas this year which is a sequel of DON (remake of 1978 DON).  The story line of Agneepath is very much similar to the original one and in this movie Hrithik Roshan will be playing the role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan (the main hero) and the role of Kancha, the villain, will be played by Sanjay Dutt.

In the list of old Bollywood blockbusters there are many movies which were hit due to the strong character, powerful dialogue delivery and impeccable performances by actors and not because of a story line, Agneepath (1990) was one of those movies which fall in this category. The dialogues of Agneepath (1990) like Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, poora naam, baap ka naam Deenanath Chauhan, gaon Mandwa are still remembered. Thus the main challenge for Hrithik Roshan is to deliver the same type of performance. Sanjay dut on the other hand is already making headlines with his new look and looks perfect for the role of legendary Kancha cheena. Both the lead actors has underwent some serious body buildup process in which sanjay dutt has really won the race as the villain in Indian cinemas do.

If we talk about songs of Agneepath(2012) than it contains an item song (chikni chameli by shreya ghoshal) which still needs to catch the attention and have failed to catch the attention lovers which Munni Badnam or Sheela ki jawaani had got. Rest of the songs are catchy but it will still has to make crowd “all ears”.

In movie it can be a fight between vijay and Kancha however in real world it will be a fight between vijay of 1990 and of 2012. The expectations are high and the stakes are even higher and the fight will be on 26 January 2012.
