Agnostic Front- Victim In Pain

What can I say about Agnostic Front? We’re talking about one of the essential hardcore bands that formed in the early 80s and basically was one of the originators of the NYHC (New York Hard Core) sound that spawned countless other bands such as Sick Of It All, Madball, Gorilla Biscuits, Murphy’s Law and so forth. This CD is actually a re-release of their first album Victim Of Pain , which was originally released in 1984. As a bonus, it includes the United Blood EP (originally released in 1983). To describe the Agnostic Front sound is to take elements of Bad Brains, Black Flag and Minor Threat and make the songs faster, shorter and the lyrics street-smart. The album and EP together clock in just under 22 minutes. The urgency of the music isn’t lost though and even if the songs are short, they had the ability to stir up crowds with a message of unity. They eventually evolved and influenced countless other bands and Roger Miret even went on to start his own band, Roger Miret and The Disasters.

Regardless, this album is essential for anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of the hardcore genre, especially NYHC. The re-release gives newer fans an opportunity to discover what Agnostic Front is all about. I’d recommend it on that basis alone. Most of the tracks are clean and short but see the recommended tracks as well for ideas.

Formado em 1999, o Evergreen Terrace, quinteto de Jacksonville/Florida, mostra que é possível misturar hardcore melódico com metal sem causar estranhamento.

Para comprovar, é só dar um play no vídeo abaixo, Sending Signals, presente em seu mais recente álbum Almost Home, que saiu em setembro pela Metal Blade Records e que traz 11 faixas e participação de Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying).

Vale dizer que em breve eles entram em turnê pela Europa ao lado de Ignite, Biohazard, Agnostic Front, Death By Stereo, Walls Of Jericho e No Turning Back; e que o guitarrista que divide os vocais do ET com Andrew Carey é Josh James, que também é vocalista da banda straight edge Casey Jones.

Vinny Stigma is a living legend in NYHC, and Hardcore in general. he is directly responsible for one of the biggest and most influential punk bands of all time, AGNOSTIC FRONT, and one of NYHC’s strongest titans, MADBALL. Vinny shouldnt feel like he has anything. he could very easily just lay back and coast out the rest of his life smiling and playing the occasional show with AF. but 2009’s “New York Blood” is proof that the pissed New Yorker isnt ready to coast any time soon.

the 12 track album contains two covers, both originally by Forced Reality. but the originals on the album are perfect little hardcore street punk gems. each one an anthemic declaration of remembrance of a time long past. each song tells of bar fights, endless tours, broken bottles, cracked teeth, and bleeding hardcore. Vinny’s voice lends a whole lot of credence to the songs. his three packs a day cabbie voice is just example A that the stories are true. example B is the ballsy rolling street punk that stands under the vocals. songs like ‘Misery to Milestone’, and ‘My Reflection’ (Which is mislabeled on one site as ‘Mr. Reflection’) are all all about the struggles and the strife. they are all about the ‘Hard Livin’ (another song on the album) of being in a hardcore band. this is a way of living, this is a religion to the men who bleed for it on stage every night. and Vinny doesnt want anyone to forget the struggles that NYHC has had to endure. from the Nazi movement stealing the skinhead imagery to Roger Miret breaking his back in the pit, all the way to being ignored by the money making side of the music industry, hardcore has scars, and here on ‘New York Blood’ Stigma wears them like tattoos of pride.

the song that steals the crown though would have to be ‘Hole in My Heart’. the song’s drunken swagger is reminiscent of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ by the king himself a Mr. Elvis, or ‘Suicide Hotel’ by Hardcore NY Street Punk brothers Spoiler NYC. the Social Distortion swing to the guitars lends a comfortable bed to the love lost lyrics and the spit lipped vocals. little hints of acoustic guitar strumming lend some sincerity to an otherwise fun rocker. the song is careful to never get to serious for its own good though. part of the song even has a slight ‘When the Angels Sing’ by Social D feel to it. the line ‘I hope someone tortures you like you tortured me’ lets the listener know that Vinny may have feelings, and he may sing about them, but this isnt group therapy. this is still grimy gutter punk from the city that gave us Hell’s Kitchen.

another standout is the updated version/ ’second part’ of the classic Iron Cross song, ‘Crucified’. the original song could have a whole book or two written about it and it’s importance. but the song became a staple of the Agnostic Front live set, and has become a song close to the hearts of skinheads (real ones, not the nazi punks who abuse the history) and Hardcore kids everywhere. this song, ‘Still Crucified’ has a thrashy street punk feel that rests perfectly next to the original chunk of hardcore history.

the album is produced by Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta, and mixed by Hatebreed/Icepick/Kingdom of Sorrow/Agnostic Front mixer/producer Zeuss. as a result the album has the huge sound of the aforementioned bands, but still retains some of the sloppy filth of Stigma’s street punk roots. in fact the sound of the album is such that Stigma would be the perfect co-headlining band for a Roger Miret and the Disasters/Spoiler NYC tour. now that is a tour i would pay through the nose for.

buy a copy now. you couldnt be unhappy with it.

We should have these Bridge Nine Records’ Agnostic Front reissues in-stock sometime next week. These are on three colors each, if I remember correctly, but I have no idea what colors, if any, we’ll be getting ahead of time.

Quand on y pense, Hoods sont quand même là depuis quinze ans, putain ca ne me rajeunit pas tout ça. En effet, c’est en 1995 que Mike Hoods et ses potes, basé à Sacramento en Californie, décide de monter un projet musical. Quinze ans après, le crew a sorti huit albums, a fait des tournées incessantes en Europe et sur le continent américain et s’est forgé une solide réputation en live. Après avoir écumé les petits labels au début de leur carrière, Hoods a ensuite signé sur Victory pour deux albums, puis sur le label floridien Eulogy pour deux albums également. Et en 2009, c’est sur le label belge I Scream (connu pour avoir entre autre sorti Backfire, Deviate, Angel Crew, Do or Die…).que sort Pit Beast.
Une chose à savoir à propos de Hoods, c’est qu’ils n’ont jamais vraiment remis en question leur son ou tenté de le faire évoluer d’une manière ou d’une autre. C’est du tough-guy hardcore basique dans les dents, avec des méchantes mosh parts. Donc dans l’ensemble, c’est toujours sympa et ca groove un max. Ce nouveau disque ne déroge pas à la règle, c’est du Hoods pur jus, donc si t’as pas kiffé avant, c’est pas ce disque qui va te réconcilier avec eux ! Notons que parmi ces 11 titres, le Sacto crew nous balance une reprise de Friend or Foe d’Agnostic Front qui, ma foie, déchire tout. Le truc qui me gêne par contre, et ça c’est également quelque chose que Hoods n’a jamais remis en question, c’est le mélange des styles. Autant ils nous pondent trois titres de tueur dans le plus pur style hardcore beatdown les unes après les autres avec des mosh parts ultra calibrées, autant tout à coup, on a droit à une chanson Oï, ou avec des solos de guitare, ou alors très très punk, à la limite du skate punk… je trouve ce mélange des genres assez désagréable ! Un autre côté négatif, c’est la qualité des lyrics, qui comme pour la compo musicale, peut passer du “très” bon (comme sur Grizzly) au très mauvais, à la limite du ridicule (extrait de Let’s have fun : Let’s have fun, f.u.n., fists are swinging, beers we are drinking…). Dans l’ensemble, cette galette est plus qu’agréable à l’écoute et contient suffisamment d’éléments intéressants et de grosses mosh parts pour donner envie de balancer des gros coups de pieds dans les bords (ou contre sa bibliothèque, seul comme un con dans son salon, c’est au choix). Et il faut laisser à Hoods leur humilité et leur envies de faire du hardcore comme eux l’entendent, sans jamais jouer les rock stars en tentant de travestir leur son pour plaire à un public plus large (comme Terror ou Hatebreed par exemple), ou pour jouer dans des salles plus grandes.. Ils en ont rien à foutre, et ça, c’est assez cool je trouve… et 15 ans d’existence, ça force le respect quand même !

Bon alors, 7 choses à savoir sur H2O avant le début de cette chronique :

1. Toby, le chanteur, fut roadie pour Sick of it All durant de nombreuses années. Après de multiples featurings sur scène avec SOIA, il s’est décidé à lancer son propre groupe : H2O.
2. H2O a joué en première partie de No Doubt en 1996 à New York
3. Toby possède la plus grande collection de chaussures Nike non déballée de toute la côte est des Etats-Unis.
4. H2O a joué en live dans le show TV ultra populaire de Conan O’Brian.
5. Todd Morse, guitariste de H2O et frère de Toby, joue également avec Juliette and the Licks.
6. Adam Blake, le bassiste a joué avec Shelter, le mythique groupe de Ray Cappo.
7. Toby, new-yorkais dans l’âme, a le World Trade Center tatoué dans le dos.
Pourquoi 7 raisons ? Parce que 7 ans … 7 longues années que tous les fans de H2O attendent fiévreusement la sortie d’un nouvel album. Quel bonheur, il y a quelques mois, d’apprendre que ces derniers ont signés avec Bridge 9, label d’avant-garde de la scène old-school américaine… Il fallait, dès lors, s’armer de patience en attendant la sortie programmée pour le 27 mai… Revenons brièvement sur le passé du groupe. C’est à New York, sous l’impulsion de Toby Morse que se forme H2O en 1995. Désireux de mélanger le hardcore brut des rues de New York avec le punk, le groupe arrive, dès son premier album, à trouver un son qui lui est propre (quelque part entre Cro-Mags et The Descendents).
Après un premier album, H2O, en 1996 et l’excellent Thicker than water en 1997 viendra l’album de la consécration avec F.T.T.W. en 1999. Les deux albums suivants (Go et le EP All we want) seront un cran en dessous en terme de qualité et laisseront présager la mort du groupe, aux alentours de 2001… Et, c’est donc en 2008 que H2O refait surface avec leur nouveau LP Nothing to prove… A la première écoute, c’est sur : la magie est toujours là !
Le style musical n’a pas vraiment changé, mêlant toujours backing vocals rageurs et refrains chantés, parties 2-step et parties rapides, le tout délivré avec une sincérité déconcertante ! Les lyrics sont simples mais bien abouties, elles abordent toujours les thématiques propres au hardcore (amitié, famille, honneur), et l’écriture du chanteur est toujours aussi percutante. Il aborde, entre autres, des sujets tels que la mort de son père dans la chanson “Sunday”, le mouvement straight-edge dans “Still here”, les tatouages qu’il porte dans “Heart on my sleeve”, ainsi que de la vague fashion-core dans “What happened ?” Ce qui frappe à l’écoute de cet album, c’est le nombre de featurings… On trouve entre autres Freddy, Mitts et Hoya de Madball, Roger de Agnostic Front, Kevin Seconds, Lou de Sick of it All, Danny Diablo, ancien frontman de Skarhead, Civ de Gorilla Biscuits, le tout produit par Chad Gilbert… Qui dit mieux ??? Tant d’invités prouvent bien le réel respect qu’a acquis H2O en oeuvrant toutes ces années à délivrer un message positif et honnête aux publics des 4 coins du globe… La seule critique que je pourrai émettre concernant ce disque est que ses mélodies sont trop accrocheuses, et que du coup, je risque de m’en lasser rapidement… La palme de l’album revient à la chanson “Nothing To Prove”, et son refrain ultra puissant en backing vocals et ses multiples featurings… une tuerie !

Weeeeeeeeeeee! Nothing gets me more pumped up than the opening of the local ski hill. Work just doesn’t seem to matter…life is on the upswing after a dreadful shoulder season in a mountain town…snow is falling.

For those of you out there who love ski season as much as me probably have similar routines that carry you through a typical day at the hill. What I have for you this week is a special little look into my ski day through the power of music.

The first is an uptempo playlist that will prep you all the way from coffee shop stop to the parking lot to the first few leg burners in the powder.  WARNING: It’s not for anyone with weak eardrums.

Wenn Chemnitz seine Enthusiasten nicht hätte, sähe es mau aus. Diese Enthusiasten organisieren seit vielen Jahren immer wieder feine kleine Konzerte im kleinen Saal – St. Etienne genannt – des AJZ zu ehemals Karl-Marx-Stadt. Als verwöhnter Leipziger findet man leider viel zu selten den Weg in die beschauliche Stadt der Moderne um im jeweils überschaubaren Publikum tolle Bands zu sehen.

Der Chemnitzer an sich geht gerne zu den Dödelhaien, Agnostic Front und Fettes Brot. Um progressive, kleine, unbekannte aber ungemein liebenswerte Independent Indie-, Punk-, Postrock-Bands macht er aber einen Bogen. Womit wir wieder bei den Enthusiasten wären, die den Kopf nicht in den Sand stecken.

Gestern waren Tone, September Malevolence und Junius zugegen. Als wir Punkt 22.00 ankamen – zu einer Uhrzeit also, bei der in Leipziger Konzertlokalitäten frühestens angefangen wird – spielten Tone schon ihr letztes Lied. Tone kommen aus Dänemark und machen Laptop-Core. Sozusagen. Eine Frau, ein Mann, zwei Computer, ein paar Effekte und eine begleitende Videoinstallation. Diese war – zumindest während des letzten Songs – ohne Gnade belanglos.

September Malevolence kommen aus Schweden und machen Post-Rock. Da ist es dieser Tage schwer das Rad neu zu erfinden. Noch schwerer ist es nicht wie alle zu klingen. In kleinen Momenten schafften das die vier – typisch schwedisch – adrett frisierten und gekleideten Herren. Insgesamt aber fehlen die dynamischen Berg- und Talfahrten, die stimmliche gänsehautverursachende Tiefe und die kompositorische Überraschung. September Malevolence sind nett. Und nett sind viele.

Dann Junius aus Boston. Ein Gesamtkunstwerk. Drei von vier Juniusisten trägt das gleiche Paar Schuhe. Der Schlagzeuger spielt barfuss. Auf der Bühne malt nur eine Farbe. Schwarz. Diese Band vermag ein Soundgewitter heraufzubeschwören. Das ist durchaus im wörtlichen Sinne gemeint. Zunächst das Gewitter: Schlagzeug und Bass sind das was man eine Einheit nennt. Alles auf den Punkt. Kein überflüssiger Bombast. Kein “der Basslauf passt zwar nicht, aber schau mal wie schnell und gut ich spiele”. Beide Instrumente bilden gleichsam den Hintergrund, das Firmament vor dem die beiden anderen Protagonisten für Blitz und Donner sorgen. Ein Gitarrist ist ein Schlaks vor dem Herrn und hat den gleichen Frisör wie Kurt Ebelhäuser. Er ist ein Leisetreter. Einer der für die richtige Stimmung sorgt. Der den Donner anstachelt und den Blitz herausfordert. Für beides ist gleichzeitig Sänger und Gitarrist Joseph E. Martinez zuständig. Seine Stimme ist der Donnerhall. Ganz geradlinig, sonor und mitreißend. Dieser Mann wirkt wie einer der gerne mal im Wald übernachtet und zu Selbsterfahrungszwecken Ameisen isst. Seine Gitarre ist dabei seine Wünschelrute. Mit ihr sucht er den Blitz. Hat er ein elektromagnetisches Feld ausgemacht, kommt die Entladung.

Was machen Junius? Sie machen Rock. Sie sind irgendwie auch Hardcore. Eigentlich aber sind sie Punk. Mhm. Ich sagte zu Beginn sie beschwören ein Soundgewitter herauf. Wie das Soundgewitter entsteht, dürfte jetzt klar sein. Die Verschwörung verrät mehr über das, was Junius machen. Sie erschaffen eine eigene Welt. Diese beruht auf ihrem neuen Album “THE MARTYRDOM OF A CATASTROPHIST” auf den Ideen des Wissenschaftlers Immanuel Velikovsky. Es geht um Katastrophen, den Weltuntergang und die Idee welchen Einfluss das alles auf die gesellschaftliche Psyche hat. So klingen Junius.

Mich haut die Band um – auch noch aus einem anderen Grund. Sie stehen in einer Welt der digitalen Downloads ein für das haptische Erlebnis Musik. Ihre LP erscheint als Doppel-Vinyl mit einem 16-seitigem 12” großen Begleitheft. Zu jedem Song gibt es eine Illustration. Weltuntergangsstimmung Galore. Das Vinyl ist farbig und sieht aus wie eine Tasse Kaffee in die man gerade Milch gegossen hat. So muss das sein.
