It’s nice to see a publication stand up to bullying by TG glitterati for once instead of cowering in fear and issuing hasty apologies and retractions. (Thanks to Cat and Just Jennifer for pointing this out!) It has already been blogged by Jennifer and commented on by Cat over at Pam’s House Blend, and this is the sort of confrontation that should get more playtime time in the blogosphere.

The controversy arose when Autumn tried to use the GLAAD standards (which as I understand it Autumn basically wrote, someone correct me if this is wrong please) to enforce her will on an independent web publication, the Atlanta Progressive News. The offending article can be read here.

At issue was the use of the phrase “sex change operation”, which Autumn finds personally distasteful because it apparently requires, gasp, that someone change their body in order to change sex. I have to wonder what is going on over at GLAAD for them to accept Autumn’s silly premise and actually allow this following view to become their official policy:

PROBLEMATIC: “sex change,” “pre-operative,” “post-operative”
PREFERRED: “transition”
Referring to a sex change operation, or using terms such as pre- or post-operative, inaccurately suggests that one must have surgery in order to truly change one’s sex.

And this is the crux of the “transgender” political argument, all summed up. This is what they, the tg “leaders” want the world to accept. And it is utter lunacy. A child can tell you that if nothing changes, it stays the same, but subtleties like “change means changing stuff” are lost on those with the sort of irrational agenda that transgenderism requires. The Atlanta Progressive News article in question had the temerity to hold the view that a sex change requires changing sex. To their great credit, and holding to a strict journalistic standard which is rare these days, the APN has resisted Sandeen’s bullying.

Autumn has laughably termed this challenge to her authority as “bizarre cultural insensitivity”. What a delightfully devilish lie! It almost makes you smile at the mental gymnastics required to turn’s one’s wishes into the gold standard of cultural sensitivity. And though radical feminism isn’t my cup of tea, I’d have to hazard an opinion that Autumn does indeed drip with privilege. This is the sort of thing that lets the real world know for sure that the people in transgender-land have really gone over the edge- if there was any doubt left, even among their one-time allies.

I resent being drawn into their little world, to be displayed as a “transwoman” for their political convenience. These people do not speak for me or the silent majority of post-transsexual people who have treated their birth defect and moved on. This is a sick joke.

Autumn is about as perfect an example of a transvestite as you will ever hope to see. As Cassandra has described transvestites, Autumn is “loud, brash, and downright fetish based” and “simply confused about the implications of their needs”. Just look at Autumn’s escapades on Youtube and decide for yourself.

If this is the current state of transgender activism, they are being terribly misrepresented. I know they can do better; I’ve seen other spokespeople present them in a much better light. They should consider a vote of no-confidence for this person and her self-centered, narcissistic “leadership”.

This year the AGP seeks to actively use the blog to connect and communicate ideas about urban and rural planning across disciplines and geographical locations. First and foremost the blog is meant to benefit planning-minded students at the University of Waterloo. However, the blog also has the potential to reach out and greet with other like-minded individuals and groups locally and internationally. We’ll see where the road takes us…

The holidays are almost over, but only almost…

One of the people who read my blog wrote me a note, and I thought she had a good question. Why do I write this, after exhorting people to “move on”. While the writer meant it as a honest, serious question, it also happens to be a common criticism from the people who want to erase the distinction between transgender and transsexual. So I’ll answer and handle two things at once.

I want to clear something up: My main focus is not about transition, and I am not particularly interested in trying to counsel people, or argue about personalities or make judgments on specific people. Occasionally someone starts a conversation in the comments section and in genuine concern for this person, I’ll give my opinion of what will lead to the greatest happiness, long term, for the post-transsexual person.

I write under the assumption that the vast majority of people who are coping with real transsexualism have come to an understanding of what is really going on long before they get to the internet, and blogs like this. To speak to them of these things is preaching to the choir. I do however hope to offer an alternative viewpoint to those few real transsexual people who read blogs with an eye to their future plans, that may yet be solidifying them and are thinking about involving themselves with the TG.

I am not telling people that to be a “real transsexual” you have to pursue correction in any particular fashion. The notion that process and surgery defines who is and isn’t transsexual is totally false; we are born, not scheduled in.

In fact, I am not interested in sorting people into bins at all, except when they attempt to do so to me. It is a strange situation when good manners in dealing with people also push you to the limits of sanity… and addressing certain TG glitterati by their preferred pronouns naturally sticks in your throat. What I am saying, to those who will listen, is that putting the needs of transsexual men and women into the hands of patently non-transsexual “TG” care is a recipe for disaster.

So, here’s my response to that letter.

Hello

I’m not really writing a blog about how people should transition. I’m writing about how there is such a thing as a real transsexual biological condition, and that we who have experienced it are ill-served by the assumption that we are all supportive of a particular brand of politics. Namely, that we all are automatically part of the GLBT, and beholden to anyone speaking in that group who calls themselves transgender. I find it intolerable that crossdressing men speak on women’s issues, and even more outrageous is their casual assumption that we should shut up and let them do all the talking.

My main goal is to put out a lamp in the darkness for people who may be questioning their sudden forced inclusion in the GLBT ghetto. I’m not interested in creating some GLBT-style group, political action committee, public persona, or some weird movement. It’s just about telling people like you and me it’s ok to go your own way. Don’t feel guilty about taking care of yourself; you really are different from them. They certainly wouldn’t lift a finger to help any of us, and in many cases these “community leaders” are actively hostile to our interests. Case in point is the ridiculous way they bring suit against various states to advance the transgender agenda, which usually ends up costing us some hard-won legal gains that we have enjoyed for decades, such as the ability to change our birth certificates.

That brings me to the other reason I write. I see a terrible danger to us because it costs these people NOTHING to roll the dice with our rights. They claim to be us, go into court, and if they win, great. Usually they don’t, and we (transsexual background people) have a set back. No big deal to the transgender lobby, they still have everything they had before, i.e. the rights of their birth sex plus more due to their appropriation of “transsexual”. They can keep gambling away using our legal status until its all gone and shrug their shoulders and say “Oh well”, before moving on to their next kink.

Sorry to be so wordy, I just wanted to tell you why I still care. Yes, I have moved on in my real (non-internet) life as you have. At the same time I am not blind to the danger of poisonous politics. This stuff can still come back and bite us, and we should at least have one eye on the GLBT as long as that construct exists in its current form that claims us as constituents. With any luck, we can get some other people to say “enough is enough” too, and start voicing their concerns.

Next, I’d like to clear something up about the TG paradigm that often goes unsaid. The TG are not a monolith, nor is the group composed of unfathomable hordes that all have their own unique, unknowable issues. There are a very few, very specific groups of people currently claimed by TG politicians.

The first group is the fetishistic transvestites. These are the men I focus on the most in this blog because they are by far the most numerous of the TG, and they are also the ones making the most demands. Overall these are the loudest, most aggressive, most abusive of the types of people you run into in genderland. These are the ones of the “mutilated crotch” and the “you’ll never REALLY be that sex” shouters. They are the whip hand that keeps everyone in line, and they are responsible for the creation and maintenance of the TG chimaera.

The second group, the ones that people are taught to think of as “core” TG, consists of “gender confused” individuals. These are the people the transvestites point out as their first line of defense when they are challenged on their construct. Invoking the TG rubric conjures images of these tortured individuals, and no person with a heart would think to slam this group unless the demands of the transvestites have become too pressing. This is the first bit of sleight-of-hand that typically occurs when you confront the transvestites.

Nobody has really figured out what drives the gender confused. There may indeed be multiple causes such as abuse and psychosis among these people. At the same time, *everyone* knows what’s up with the transvestites. The problem you run into here is that the TV types often pretend to be “gender confused” as a method of dealing with the shame of their fetish, which then later progresses to become a key aspect of the political argument for those so inclined. One of the reasons, probably the main reason, I want to see the TG construct fade away is because of the damage it does to people trapped by it who believe the lie. TV’s who feel ashamed of their variant sexuality simply need to get past it. They don’t need to escape into fantasies of transition.

So really there are just 2 groups we are talking about in the TG; transvestites, and the rest. It isn’t necessary to understand the many causes of “gender confusion” in order to deal with the reality of the situation. The group of truly “gender confused” people is actually rather small and more or less silent. I wanted to make it clear that my anger is not directed towards them, I consider them just as much a victim of these cynical politics as “ts” men and women, or gays and lesbians. The finger of blame points squarely at the transvestites.

It has become such a problem that the needs of these heterosexual men have somehow become part of the gay movement, and indeed are threatening to overtake and supplant the needs of those for whom the movement was formed. How is that for privilege? I see rumblings around the internet and elsewhere that the gay men and lesbian women in the US are waking up to the fact that THEIR movement has been co-opted to serve the needs of straight white guys.

I write these posts because I want people to understand the true nature of the things that are going on when you hear “transgender” being invoked. All that transgender means is that some transvestites have everyone else’s interests by the tail and they won’t let go until they get what they want. When are people going to wake up?

O VBL (VESA Local Bus) é um barramento de expansão muito mais rápido do que os barramentos ISA, MCA e EISA. Inicialmente surgiu como barramento de placa de vídeo. Graças a sua velocidade, virou como barramento padrão em 1993 entre as placas mães.

AGP-PRO:

Foram direcionadas principalmente para placas de vídeos e consomem uma grande quantidade de energia.

La Era del GPU

¿Que es el GPU?

Es la unidad de procesamiento gráfico, GPU (acrónimo del inglés Graphics Processing Unit) es un procesador dedicado exclusivamente al procesamiento de gráficos, para aligerar la carga de trabajo del procesador central (CPU) en aplicaciones como los videojuegos y o aplicaciones 3D. De esta forma, mientras gran parte de lo relacionado con los gráficos se procesa en la GPU, la CPU puede dedicarse a otro tipo de cálculos (como la inteligencia artificial o los cálculos mecánicos en el caso de los videojuegos) y así aumentar el rendimiento del equipo.

Una GPU implementa ciertas operaciones gráficas llamadas primitivas optimizadas para el procesamiento gráfico. Una de las primitivas más comunes para el procesamiento gráfico en 3D es el antialiasing, que suaviza los bordes de las figuras para darles un aspecto más realista. Adicionalmente existen primitivas para dibujar rectángulos, triángulos, círculos y arcos. Las GPU actualmente disponen de gran cantidad de primitivas, buscando mayor realismo en los efectos.

Diferencias con la CPU

Si bien en una computadora no es posible reemplazar la CPU por una GPU, hoy en día las GPU son muy potentes y pueden incluso superar la frecuencia de reloj de una CPU antigua (más de 500MHz). Pero la potencia de las GPU y su dramático ritmo de desarrollo reciente se deben a dos factores diferentes. El primer factor es la alta especialización de las GPU, ya que al estar pensadas para desarrollar una sola tarea, es posible dedicar más silicio en su diseño para llevar a cabo esa tarea más eficientemente. Por ejemplo, las GPU actuales están optimizadas para cálculo con valores en coma flotante, predominantes en los gráficos 3D.

Por otro lado, muchas aplicaciones gráficas conllevan un alto grado de paralelismo, al ser sus unidades fundamentales de cálculo (vértices y píxeles) completamente independientes. Por tanto, es una buena estrategia usar la fuerza bruta en las GPU para completar más cálculos en el mismo tiempo. Los modelos actuales de GPU suelen tener una media docena de procesadores de vértices (que ejecutan Vertex Shaders), y hasta dos o tres veces más procesadores de fragmentos o píxeles (que ejecutan Pixel Shaders (O Fragment Shaders)). De este modo, una frecuencia de reloj de unos 600-800MHz (el estándar hoy en día en las GPU de más potencia), muy baja en comparación con lo ofrecido por las CPU (3.8-4 GHz en los modelos más potentes [no necesariamente más eficientes]), se traduce en una potencia de cálculo mucho mayor gracias a su arquitectura en paralelo.

Una de las mayores diferencias con la CPU esta en su arquitectura. A diferencia del procesador central, que tiene una arquitectura de von Neumann, la GPU se basa en el Modelo Circulante. Este modelo facilita el procesamiento en paralelo, y la gran segmentación que posee la GPU para sus tareas.

Beneficios de tener una GPU

1. La tarjeta de video procesa la salida a pantalla o monitor.
2. Es evidente cuando se presenta video, movimientos de pantalla completa, presentación de gráficos complejos en tiempo real y video juegos.
3. Para el uso de AERO de Windows Vista se requiere forzosamente una tarjeta de video.
4. Útil para el uso de aplicaciones dibujo y diseño 3D, y algunos programas que utilizan la potencia del GPU para poder “renderear” en el menor tiempo posible.
5. Para los videojuegos de última generación, para poder mostrar los juegos con un nivel de detalle de texturas impresionante, rendimiento y realismo.
6. Incremento del rendimiento de la PC.

El GPU puede venir integrado en la tarjeta madre o en una tarjeta grafica separada de la tarjeta madre con las siguientes interfaces.

1. Integradas en la tarjeta madre (motherboard) con un chipset dedicado exclusivamente al procesamiento de los gráficos. Pueden tener memoria exclusiva o quitarnos un poco de nuestra RAM para ser usado para almacenar los datos de video.

2.  Separadas del motherboard pueden tener diversas interfaces y tecnologías:

• PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) de 32 bits o PCI-x de 64bits.
• AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) de 32bits pero con un bus dedicado exclusivamente a los datos de video.
• PCIe (PCI express) interfaz utilizada en la actualidad,  de hasta 16 veces más velocidad de transferencia de datos que el AGP.

El sábado que fui a la feria del libro en el Zócalo del Distrito Federal, me encontré con una muy agradable sorpresa: Crónicas Literarias del maestro Federico Patán. Antes de comprarlo, ya sabía que el siguiente jueves, la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM iba a hacer la presentación del libro, así que me lo llevé, con una sonrisa en el rostro. El trabajo de Patán me ha llegado de maneras increíbles, y no fue ésta la excepción.

Aproveché, por supuesto, la lectura fresca del libro, la presentación y una invitación a publicar de vez en cuando en una revista, así que no pude evitar la sensación de escribir sobre Crónicas Literarias (prometo que el texto no tardará tanto en salir). Abro word, me dispongo a empezar. Cuando de pronto Apolo se me apareció y me dijo.

―Abrirás google y teclearás “Crónicas Literarias Federico Patán”.

Sabemos que no hacer caso a los dioses es algo muy peligroso, así que no retrasé mi actividad. De pronto me salen una serie de páginas donde se hablaba de la presentación del libro, a la cual tuve el gusto de asistir y hacerle una pregunta a Patán.

Me gustaría detenerme aquí para acusar a “agp” de una muy mala y desinformada nota que pueden leer acá.  Nuestro compañero “agp” no sólo peca de lo anterior dicho, sino que toma a Hernán Lara Zavala (académico de la Facultad y reciente galardonado con el Premio Iberoamericano de Novela Elena Poniatowska por Península, Península) como único centro de la nota. Dejando no sólo de lado a Anamari Gomís, Gabriel Wiezs y al propio Federico Patán. Sé que no tuvieron la elocuencia que Hernán Lara demostró, cuyo turno en el micrófono fue el más ameno, pero también demostró ciertos errores (de memoria) al nombrar Exilio Interior a la novela Último Exilio, que no está de más mencionar que ganó el Villaurrutia en 1986 (y no en 1987 como agrega “agp”). O al percatarse de su error cuando dijo que el libro era editado por la Universidad Veracruzana, luego Anamarí, Gabriel, Ana Elena (moderadora) y Patán lo corrigieron, casi al unísono dijeron: ¡Ediciones Eón!

Error grave que “agp” recoge en su nota al decir que:

“”Crónicas Literarias” es un trabajo editado por la Universidad Veracruzana, en la colección del mismo nombre.“

Claro que podemos emitir un sonoro quejido. ¿Qué hace un error que el propio Hernán Lara corrigió? ¿Cuál es el nombre de la colección, “Universidad Veracruzana”, “Crónicas Literarias”? Sea cual sea la respuesta de “agp”, temo decir que está equivocado. Le editorial es Ediciones Eón, y la colección es ensayo.

Es obvio que “agp”, si es que asistió a la presentación, no prestó nada de su atención, ni siquiera compró el libro. Un grave error de estos periodistas encargados de las secciones de cultura, que desgraciadamente no es sólo cosa de “agp”. El cambio de nombres, de fechas, de tema. Aquí el chiste no es informar. Es llenar una cuartilla y media para hacer como que se trabaja. Necesitamos urgentemente nuevos periodistas.

Era ora! Il popolo dei quakers aspettava questo momento da qualche anno: l’AGP Tour 2009 è stato lanciato oggi, come recita il titolo ed il comunicato stampa in fondo riportato.
Si tratta nientemeno che di una competizione che si propone di rilanciare gli FPS da duello (quali Quake) nei tornei più prestigiosi. Con questo tour, l’Association of Gaming Professionals non vuole far altro che dare un segnale forte alla community. Quake Live è il gioco giusto per rilanciare gli FPS 1v1? A mio avviso, sì. Speriamo solo che questo tentativo serva davvero a qualcosa, perchè finora i montepremi dedicati al nuovo capitolo della serie Quake sono scarsi, e non siamo ai tempi in cui s’investiva solamente in un torneo di Quake 3. The Jasper controversy continues at Susan’s support forums as the people there come to grips with the reality of what transgender has become.  It is increasingly difficult to justify the subordination of so many different individuals to the concept of transgender when people’s needs and goals are so varied, and so often at odds.

One group in particular that I feel is being done a grave disservice are the core transgender people for whom the word really came to have meaning.  Leaving aside Arnold Lowman’s/Virginia Prince’s “transgenderist” for the moment, the person who is currently most typified by the transgender label is someone quite different from the fetishistic crossdresser that was the target audience of Transvestia.

Cassandra writes about her experiences as counselor to people in gender support groups, and her thoughts make a lot of sense when considering my own experiences.  There are usually all sorts of people who attend these meetings, not all of whom would consider themselves transgender in the sense you get from the internet cadre.  There are sometime crossdressers, the occasional person passing through transsexual transition, fetish-based transvestites, and of course the full-time transgender people.

All of them have their own different life courses and their own needs.  Some only want to express themselves in a safe environment, some want to see their feelings echoed in others, some want to engage their sexuality in a public place, and some are the people whom Cassandra says “wear the label transgender most comfortably”.  It is this last group that I’d like to talk about, because despite the current talk they seem particularly ill-served by the cobbled-together association that has come to be “transgender”.

I used to believe that all transgender people had at their core the same issue.  Not being transgender myself, I had only the dogma and edicts from the most vocal people that claimed to represent the whole group to go by.  I deferred to their pronouncements because my personal philosophy is live and let live.  Being an outsider to their group, I had no basis to judge the truth of their statements.

At this point it is safe to say that transgender is not a monolith as is presented politically to the world at large.  It is many different people who feel lost, and are looking for answers.  With the benefit of experience and hindsight, I now believe that “transgender”, that core group that speaks of Gender Identity Disorder as their primary issue, is a distinct group of people who deserve to have their needs addressed by proper medical and/or psychiatric authorities.

“Gender Identity Disorder” itself is a poorly understood condition, one which I didn’t used to accept as real because it has been talked down into an issue of self-expression by outspoken transgender politicians, much the same as “transsexual” has been subsumed and talked down.  But if you’ve ever known anyone who has serious problems with society’s imposed gender, you know it goes beyond role strain.  And it tortures them.

Whatever demons chase those who suffer from this problem must be fleshed out by people who can help, and handled for the benefit of those who suffer from this affliction.  I don’t think this can happen as long as this issue is trivialized by those who speak for the transgender yet don’t themselves suffer from it.  I find it just as shameful when they subjugate people with GID as when they subjugate people born with the transsexual condition.

A big part of the problem is that when people attempt to come together to discuss these issues and gain an understanding of them, those who place themselves in “leadership” roles within that forced “community” stifle all talk.  No research will be done on GID because those who have the problem are marginalized by their own community, and subsequently mislabeled by the psychiatric profession, which portrays them all as fetishistic sexual deviants.  I fail to see how core transgender people are served by this situation in that community.

I’d like to close with something I wrote in that thread on Susan’s.  The thread was subsequently locked, so no responses will be forthcoming.  But it’s something we need to talk about with people on the other side of the fence.

One comment I’d like to make for clarity is that men and women born with the transsexual condition do not experience “GID” in the sense that it is used with respect to transgender issues. “GID” most properly describes people who do not have the transsexual “syndrome”, and whose problems seem to orbit around “gender roles” and “gender presentation”.

I think this is another source of confusion that facilitates the mixing of two separate conditions, transsexual and transgender, together. For the transsexual-born, societal gender is a consequence of the physical condition, not the cause. I’m not certain what causes a putative “transgender” condition. It is a condition that causes a person significant distress which we currently don’t understand fully. This of course has nothing to do with bohemian types who simply do not care about societal standards, aka “genderqueer”.

These are three separate things that people have a tendency to mix together. I’ve modified my views on “GID” since my initial belief it was a freedom-of-expression issue. I’ve come to believe that there are people who do experience serious problems with their “gender” that go beyond the role strain that everyone feels at one time or another in a restrictive society. At the same time, this is not related to the problem of those who are born differently, aka transsexuality.

It does everyone a disservice to ignore the truth, because that ignorance feeds an atmosphere of denial and leads away from getting the proper help to those who need it. Physical transition is not a panacea for “GID”, and the current practice of pushing hormones and surgery as a solution for it is harmful. We need a better understanding of what causes GID before psychology or psychiatry can address it.

Up to this point it has been mostly verbal sparring over ideology. But now the situation has changed and we are reaching a catalyzing moment.

After hatred, the next cry we hear is elitist or classist. And when certain people try to dismiss us we get that lovely old accusation of racism, delivered in the most racist tone imaginable. Over at Feministe, our friend Monica Roberts is given a rather free hand as a contributor. What’s interesting is that apparently, Feministe doesn’t care if its writers engage in racist behavior, as long it is the right kind of racism.

On a comment she made to her own recent post entitled “Stealth Was a Mistake”, Roberts said:

Once again y’all missed the point about this post. It ain’t about you white transpeeps. It is about MY community. But some of y’all vanilla flavored transpeeps MADE it about you (as usual).

” B the way Susan, as I’ve said to you and your WWBT friends for the last decade, you can run from being trans but you can’t hide from it, period.”

And so on.

The problem is that it is Monica who makes it all about other people, then denies it placing the blame on the other party. She likes to tell other people who they are (see the “can’t hide from it” statement above), despite total ignorance about real transsexuality. She calls everyone “trans”, a meaningless term, regardless if they even know what she means by that or not. She, like many of the TG, see themselves as the final arbiter of other people’s identities while crying foul if anyone questions theirs. This kind of hypocrisy goes unnoticed among their ranks, who cheer on this sociopathic behavior with glee.

If she would actually restrict her name calling to people who make the trangender lifestyle choice, real transsexual-born people would say nothing to her. When caught in the act, she turns it around and tries to play the race card, the class card, and whatever else is on the bottom of the deck. This is the standard GLBT tactic when trying to silence opposition from people who don’t want anything to do with them. And as the T in that acronym, the TG speak for all of the GLBT with their actions.

I’ll just repost my final reponse on that comment thread (with an edit or two for spelling, etc.):

No. Racism can come from anyone, anywhere, anytime. Someone does not get a pass simply because of their skin color- that would be racist in itself. I’m surprised to hear this sort of excuse on a feminist blog, but then again maybe not.

Monica’s incessant racism is a tactic to cover her agenda. For those who don’t know the real story, please let me explain. You see, there is a tiny minority of people born with a very rare birth defect. Science is coming closer and closer to understanding it all the time. It’s a terrible life-threatening problem and there is a high suicide rate among those afflicted.

Monica and her ilk come along and attach themselves to the problem. They use the lack of public knowledge about this problem to their own advantage, and then present themselves as the spokespeople for people who really do suffer from it. When the people who are really affected by this issue protest, they are re-labeled from men and women into trans-things, and told they are elitist for having a birth defect. Voices are silenced with false cries of homophobia and racism.

This crass misuse of these accusations does a disservice to everyone. My birth condition is not a joke, nor is it a gender playground for people who want to dress up in frillies. I am through giving these people the chance to reform their ways, because they have proven time and again they are the worst sorts of oppressor; they torture you with the approval of their own conscience.

Monica is a racist because she uses race against other people. End of story.

Transgender is a recently created word used to describe people who play with “gender”. Transsexual is a word that describes a birth condition. One does not turn into the other; you either are born with a transsexual condition, or you are not. Transgender does not own transsexual, nor does it own intersex which it is trying to absorb even now. People are starting to speak up against this appropriation and abuse by the GLBT.

One more thing about the “can’t hide” comment. And this really is the core of the issue here… By the “out and proud” status that the TG paradigm requires, the implict threat of “you can’t hide” is that the antics of the TG will follow the victims no matter where we go or what we do.

This is abuse, plain and simple. It is designed to terrorize and threaten, as Cassandra has written on her blog.

These people need to be called to account for what they are doing to those born differently, both transsexual and intersex. It is shameful. And they are a disgrace.

O como una vez más, se demuestra que es de vital importancia tener un amigo informático.
Resumo lo acontecido.

Suena mi móvil y al mirar la pantalla veo que es una antigua compañera de trabajo, de la que no sé nada desde el dia en que la despidieron. Raro, raro, raro, pienso yo.
Tras descolgar y los amables saludos de rigor, la conversación se desarrolló más o menos así.
- Pues te llamaba porque el ordenador me ha petao.
- Vaya putada faena, si.
- Era por si me lo podías echar un vistazo.
- Por poder mirarlo, lo puedo mirar, pero esque da la casualidad de que estamos en pleno montaje de unos equipos y no sé cuando podré ponerme con él.
- Ahhhh, bueno yo te lo llevo y me dices algo ¿vale?.
- Muy bien.
- Me pasaré en un par de dias, porque tengo que ir a un sitio que me coge de camino y así aprovecho el viaje.
- Vale, pues por aquí estaré.

Lejos de pasarse en ese par de dias prometido, y más habiendo un fin de semana por medio, esa misma tarde tenía allí el ordenador petao.
Le dije que me lo dejase y que cuando pudiese, lo miraría y le diría algo. Tras explicarme varias veces los sintomas que tenía, como se le había apagado repentinamente y que dentro tenía todos los datos, se fué no muy convencida porque no lo había destripado en aquel momento.

La tarde siguiente, en un hueco que tuve, cogí el equipo y basándome en los sintomas descritos, me puse manos a la obra. Tras algunas comprobaciones, el diagnóstico estaba claro, la fuente de alimentación y la placa base habían pasado a mejor vida.
Entonces entré en la parte más complicada, buscar una placa base similar a la que tenía para que al cambiársela el sistema no sufriese demasiados cambios y pudiese iniciar. Tras una larga búsqueda, encuentro una de similares características, compatible con su microprocesador socket 775, con su memoria DDR400 y con su tarjeta gráfica AGP.

Un rato después ya tenía la placa montada en su carcasa, con todos sus componentes puestos y funcionando a la perfección. Instalo los nuevos drivers, le actualizo el antivirus, el sistema y llamo a la dueña de la criatura.
- Bueno, pues ya tienes el equipo arreglado.
- ¿Ya? ¿y qué le pasaba? ¿y las fotos y todo lo que había dentro?
- Tenía la fuente de alimentación y la placa base rota, pero no te preocupes que está todo igual que lo tenías. Vamos, que al encenderlo no notarás que se le ha hecho nada.
- Uf, que susto. Bueno, y ahora dame el otro susto.
- Pues el precio exacto no lo sé, pero creo que ronda los 100 euros
- …
- Que no! En total será algo menos de 30 euros, la placa cuesta sobre los 15 euros y la fuente de alimentación unos 10 euros, pues echa cuentas.
- ¿Solo?
- Pues si, pero vamos que si ves que es poco y te vas a sentir mal, te rascas el bolsillo por las molestias de vermelas y deseármelas para encontrar una placa como la tuya, porque la mano de obra no te la he cobrado y así todos contentos.
- Bueno, mejor te invito a una cerve y en paz ¿no?
- Si tu lo dices…
- Vale, pues en cuanto pueda me paso a por él.
- Perfecto.

No habían pasado dos horas desde la finalización de esta llamada cuando estaba allí para recoger el equipo.
Se marchó contenta, con su equipo reparado, en menos de dos dias, tal cual lo tenía antes de la avería y por tan solo 25 euros.
Esque así da gusto.

En ocasiones, mucho nos sorprendemos, o más bien, nos sorprenden los clientes con los inventos que quieren hacer o con las burradas que sueltan por desconocimiento.
Y es normal, si alguien no sabe de algo, pero cree que puede aportar alguna opción para que eso le reporte menos coste, pues bienvenido sea. Pero sirviendonos de ejemplo, éste no es el caso que nos atañe.

Nosotros como técnicos o informáticos todo terreno que somos, siempre andamos mirando cosas nuevas, pendientes de las novedades, informándonos, peleándonos con algo que no se deja hacer para estar siempre en constante evolución y no caer en el desfase.
Una parte de nuestro trabajo es eso, mantenernos al dia por la cuenta que nos trae, que otra cosa esque los que nos dedicamos a esto tengamos un pequeño geek corriendo por nuestros adentros que nos motive para hacerlo encantados.

Pero ¿y los comerciales? porque digo yo que tan importante es para nosotros adquirir esos conocimientos, como lo será para ellos, o igual más, porque al fin y al cabo son los que venden esos productos, los que tienen que pelearse con los clientes y contestar las preguntas que éstos les hagan.

Y esto viene más bien porque últimamente, no sé si debido al constante movimiento de empresas o al periodo vacacional, algún comercial de mi empresa me ha preguntado cosas del calibre de qué es eso del blurai o que si una tarjeta AGP podría ponerse en el slot PCIExpress.
Preguntas que para un usuario de a pie pueden resultar normales, pero para alguien que está en constante trato con ese tipo de productos a diario, debería tener controladas al 100%.

Con todo esto no quiero decir que los comerciales no tengan ni idea de lo que venden, que habrá de todo como en todos sitios, obviamente, lo que quiero decir esque esos comerciales que no tienen conocimientos, deberían dedicarse un poco más a instruirse, a documentarse, a hacer cosas del tipo ir al almacén para ver fisicamente los productos, porque de eso depende su trabajo, de las ventas.
Y quieras que no, esas ventas son las que a final de mes van a pagar su hipoteca.

Até a última quarta-feira, dia 22 de julho, as placas de vídeo eram classificadas pela Receita Federal como “placa de microprocessamento com dissipador de calor” e eram tributadas da seguinte forma: 0% de imposto sobre importação e 2% de IPI (imposto sobre produtos industrializados).

Mas com o lançamento da Solução de Divergência Nº 6/2009, a Receita Federal enquadrou as placas de vídeo no código 8471.80.00 da Nomenclatura Comum do Mercosul (NCM) como “outras unidades de máquinas automáticas para processamento de dados”. Isto significa que a partir de agora as placas de vídeo importadas legalmente no Brasil podem ficar mais de 30% mais caras (15% de imposto sobre importação e 16% de IPI). Ou seja, o que era ruim ficou agora muito pior.

Opinião: Parece que ao invés de icentivar a compra de produtos legais o governo adota a politica de apoiar a PIRATARIA, pois aumentando os impostos é o mesmo que dizer a uma nação que ja é “mais que acostumada” com “camelos” a comprar da cidade de leste.

AMD prepara seus primeiros processadores Sempron soquete AM3

A AMD está preparando o lançamento dos seus primeiros processadores
Sempron (codinome Sargas) com controlador de memória DDR3 integrado. Esses
processadores serão fabricados com tecnologia de 45 nm, terão 128 KB de
cache L1, 1 MB de cache L2, barramento HyperTransport 3.0 (3,6 GT/s),
controlador de memória DDR2/DDR3 de dois canais, conjunto de instruções
SSE4A, extensões de 64 bits e serão baseados no soquete AM3. O primeiro
modelo a ser lançado será o Sempron X1 140, que terá um clock interno de
2,7 GHz (modelo SDX140HBGQBOX) e TDP de 45 W. Este processador deverá
chegar ao mercado europeu no final desta semana custando € 35.

Intel prepara unidades SSDs de 320 GB

A Intel está preparando para esta semana o lançamento da sua nova geração
de unidades SSDs baseadas no processo de fabricação de 34 nm (codinome
Postville) – as atuais unidades SSDs da Intel são fabricadas com
tecnologia de 50 nm. As novas unidades SSDs “Postville” chegarão ao
mercado em modelos de 80 GB, 160 GB e 320 GB e terão velocidade de leitura
de 200 MB/s. Com o uso da tecnologia de 34 nm espera-se que em breve a
Intel lance também um modelo com capacidade de 500 GB.

Toshiba se rende ao Blue-Ray

Um dos maiores defensores do padrão HD-DVD lançará seu primeiro aparelho
Blue-Ray. A Toshiba, que investiu pesado para promover o padrão HD-DVD,
decidiu abrir mão desta tecnologia após não ter encontrado apoio dos
grandes estúdios e cadeias de distribuição. O primeiro aparelho Blu-ray da
Toshiba deverá chegar ao Japão no final do ano, sem informações de quando
será lançado em outros mercados. Com esta notícia parece que a guerra pela
sucessão do DVD chega ao fim, tendo o padrão Blu-ray como vencedor.

Um camarada conhecido pelo nome “hipro5” conseguiu colocar uma placa de
vídeo GeForce GTX 260, que trabalha internamente a 576 MHz, para rodar a
