Continuando a falar de música, eu queria indicar The Dave Matthew Band pra vocês.

Beijinhos,

It’s over. As I said before, I’ve never watched a full season of America’s Got Talent, so I don’t know if it’s normal for the results to be as surprising as these were. Throughout, as they revealed the Top Five and then their rankings, I was surprised over and over again.

Even the winner, though I can understand it, came as a bit of a shock. As I said, going from 10 to 1 is a pretty overwhelming task.

There were some great guests tonight as well. Leona Lewis proved that winning a show like this can rocket you into superstardom, and Susan Boyle was on hand to prove that not winning a show like this can sometimes be just as good. There was so much talent up there, I think many of them will do very well.

GUESTS

Leona Lewis, “Happy” – Her cheeks were a little too red, but as usual her voice just soars. Leona Lewis was a revelation when first she appeared on Britain’s The X-Factor. And then came “Bleeding Love,” one of the most infectious tunes I’ve ever heard.

Cirque du Soleil, “Banana Shpeal” – Every time I see Cirque du Soleil it’s an entirely different act. They truly are a circus of variety and amazing talent. I can’t say that “Banana Shpeal” was one of the better things I’ve seen from them, but I can’t deny their ability to put on a show. I’d probably enjoy it more as part of a larger show, but could I watch an entire show of nothing but “Banana Shpeal?” I guess it would depend on the story structure holding it together, if there is one.

Shakira, “She-Wolf” – Well, Shakira is still shaking it like her life depends on it. There were a few questionable camera angles (this is a family show, NBC!), but Shakira is a consummate performer and gave a great performance. The song took a bit to hook me, but it did.

Rascal Flatts, “Summer Nights” – Rascal Flatts is the Nickelback of country music. By that I mean to say that I’ve always teased Nickelback, saying that their music must be scientifically engineered to sound pleasing to our ears. I’ve heard people who claim to hate Nickelback admit that they like almost every song when they’re mentioned one by one. Rascal Flatts is just like that. Their sound is almost too satisfying to be real. There’s something to be said when you can hear a song for the first time and it makes you feel like it’s been one of your favorites for years.

Susan Boyle, “Wild Horses” – What can you say about a 48-year old woman who took the world by storm with a single audition. Yes, a ton of that was because of her dowdy appearance hiding that sensational voice. Even though she’s had some shaky performances since then, I think she proved tonight that her talent is real and it’s amazing. I’d love to hear her take on some original music some day, though.

RESULTS

Eliminated: Hairo Torres, Lawrence Beamen, The Fab Five, Drew Stevyns & Grandma Lee

I cannot tell a lie. Actually, I do that all the time, but here I honestly thought Grandma Lee was a more deserving finalist than Recycled Percussion. Of course, I also think Drew Stevyns proved himself a stronger singer than Kevin Skinner throughout this competition, he just lacks as compelling a story.

Hopefully, Stevyns will land a contract somewhere. I fear that he’ll get lost in the shuffle of the winners and all the accolades at the top of this pile. Of the acts, though, only Hairo Torres (sorry, bud) doesn’t seem strong enough to sustain a show on his own.

5th Place: The Voices of Glory – I figured these kids a long-shot to win the whole competition, but there’s a future for them. I can see Christian music contracts already flying their way. Their story is so inspirational and their raw talent is so amazing, that I know they’ve got a future in singing.

4th Place: The Texas Tenors – These boys were hit or miss for me. Nevertheless, I do see their names in lights. They bring something different to the table, but if they can keep their country swagger a little more strongly in their act, they could take Branson, MO by storm!

3rd Place: Recycled Percussion – Well, this is a Vegas act, even if it wasn’t an act that I was particularly blown away by. I think they need more than just banging on various odd objects to sustain a full show, but they might make a nice opening act for Blue Man Group.

2nd Place: Barbara Padilla – Once we got down to the final two, I figured … well, Barbara’s got this one in the bag. I got that one wrong, though. America loves her, just not as much as the winner. Maybe it was the opera, though I doubt it. I have a feeling these final results were very close. The good news is that I’d rather see Barbara doing opera in an opera house than headlining in Vegas. Unless she brought an entire opera show with her.

WINNER: Kevin Skinner – I’m a little surprised by this … No, I’m a lot surprised by this. I know Kevin was popular, but I had no idea he was this popular. I don’t see what Kevin does as a headline Vegas act. That said, I do think with some polish and professional grooming, he could be a stunning country vocalist. Country music loves putting emotion into their music, and Skinner excels at that.

(Season 4, Episode 25)

Ten acts made it to these finals, instead of the intended eight. Still, going from ten to one or eight to one in two days is crazy! Yes, this is the first season I’ve watched all the way to the finale. I’m sure that’s how they do it every summer.

I’ve been impressed with the talent I’ve seen, which is probably why I stuck with the show all the way to the end this year. I was even more surprised when I agreed with almost every single person who made it to the finals. It really was going to come down to what they did tonight.

The Voices of Glory – They’ve been inspirational throughout. Their story has been one of the most poignant of the summer, but I agree that Nadia needed to step up as the permanent lead of the act. But even her vocals are stronger when her brothers are they in harmony.

This was the best I’ve seen them since their first appearance on the show. Once her brothers joined in, Nadia’s confidence grew and she took control of the song in a way that no 9-year old should be capable of. I can see them as one of those amazing family vocal acts.

Hairo Torres – I’m a huge fan of dance shows, including SoYou Think You Can Dance and America’s Best Dance Crew. It maybe a little harsh of me to say that I don’t think Torres is strong enough as a solo dancer to win this show. This has been my feeling since I first saw him.

Maybe he’s unique and exciting by AGT standards, but in comparison to some of the talents we’ve seen elsewhere, he’s just not as impressive as so many others. Again tonight, I didn’t feel that he gave me anything I hadn’t seen before and better from other street dancers. He’s good, but he’s not a million dollar headline act good.

Lawrence Beamen – I love that Beamen has been showing diversity as a vocalist. I was really worried after that first performance that he could only do the slow dirges. I also always worry about singers with such deep voices; if they can handle a wider range. Beamen did just that tonight.

By going with a more up-tempo number, he showed not only an impressive range within his baritone octave, but he showed a lot of pizzazz and personality. If he’s not good enough to win this, and I’m on the fence about that, I’d still let him cut a record. R&B would love him. He could definitely be the next Barry White.

Barbara Padilla – I hate, hate, hate when contestants repeat past songs or performances. The first season had a dress-switching magic act that just did the same thing over and over again. But Padilla is, regardless of this choice, an absolutely amazing opera singer. The song is a great showcase for her vocal abilities, I just wish she’d chosen something new.

Of course, I can’t help but wonder how much the fact that she is an opera singer will hurt her with America. It hasn’t had much impact yet, but opera is such a niche audience, I worry that she won’t find enough votes to win. If that is the case, though, she’ll surely find work singing. A voice that soars like that doesn’t come along every day.

The Fab Five – This is a dance act that has shown amazing showmanship. You don’t usually see clogging as something exciting and glamorous in popular culture, but they’ve raised their game ever time we’ve seen them. But that’s just part of what works about them.

They are so tight and together when the perform it’s as if you’re watching the same person reflected four times. The circus theme tonight added an element of fun without losing their clogging core. Is clogging ready for wide acceptance? It couldn’t ask for more impressive ambassadors.

The Texas Tenors – Singers have an advantage on this show, as it’s the talent that has the widest audience in America. We appreciate and understand and are exposed to music more than any of the other entertainment mediums. And yet these acts keep finding unique angles on singing. The Texas Tenors blend old-school Rat Pack vocals with a hint of operatics and country twang.

Tonight, they sang “My Way,” and it was almost too straight a performance for me. I saw the “Tenors” part of it, but not the “Texas.” It was that blend of the two sounds that I appreciated the most.

Drew Stevyns – Every time Drew comes on stage I expect to finally be done with him. He’s the only “Wild Card” to make the Top 10, and there’s a reason. Despite my expectations when he starts to sing, by the time he’s done, he’s roped me in.

There’s an emotional authenticity and rawness to his voice. He makes the best song choices for the type of singer he is, and he did it again tonight. Passionate and real, I kind of think I want to buy his album right now.

Grandma Lee – I worry every time Grandma Lee walks on stage because she looks like a nervous wreck. She’s 75-years old and she is funny. I agreed that she needed to move beyond “sex with Piers” jokes and show us how she would headline a show.

She delivered. A quick nod to Piers at the beginning and the end, but otherwise she tapped into 75 years of living to give us some great material. I love that she writes her own material, keeps it fresh, relevant and so much fun. I love her and I do think she could put together a great Vegas show.

Kevin Skinner – “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” is one of the most beautiful songs written. And it was a great choice for Skinner, tapping into his ability to pull emotions from an audience. And yet … he didn’t. It’s disappointing because he had a lot of potential.

Maybe he’s just not polished enough as a performer or singer to grapple such a song. Or maybe he was nervous. Or maybe I’m on crack, because the judges absolutely loved it. Maybe, as my wife says, it was different if you’re there in the audience watching it live.

Recycled Percussion – Here’s an act that I’ve never gotten into. It’s too much of the same thing for me. I’m also the guy who hated it during rock concerts when the drummist would get a ten-minute solo. My wife loves them, so I admit it could be just me on this one.

Again, they do what they do well, but I wouldn’t pay premium prices to watch it in Vegas. That said, there is a way to make homemade percussions exciting in a longer show and I did find myself curious as to what they’d come up with next, so that’s good, right?

PREDICTIONS

Yeah, right. I don’t have a freaking clue. I can’t do 10-to-1. My brain doesn’t work that way. Any one of them could win.

You sent Acro-Dunk home??

Acro-Dunk kicked ass every millisecond they were onstage. Just incredible stuff.

Not that Voices of Glory wasn’t excellent — they’re amazing. And the Fab Five was alright. They were good.

But nobody’s been anything — AN-Y-THING — like Acro-Dunk, least of all in their semi-finals performance. Which culminated in an astounding multiple-flip-through-a-flaming-hoop dunk.

Oh, did I mention that the basketball hoop was on fire? So there was that, too.

Holy cannoli, spiccoli.

Now two of my favorite acts — that Indian dance group, who were stunning, and Acro-Dunk — are gone.

In my mind it’s down to Grandma Lee and Kevin Skinner. Either one would make a great story. The 75-year-old standup comic and the Louisiana ex-chicken catcher.

You couldn’t write this stuff.

I’m pissed about Acro-Dunk, though. Especially considering how it went down. The final three were Acro-Dunk, The Voices of Glory and The Fab Five, and then AD was sent home leaving the judges to select one of the remaining two.

They decided to throw the rules out and send both of them through. Cool, cool, good for both of them, but WHAT ABOUT THE BEST ACT OF THE WHOLE SHOW?

(In case I was unclear before, that would be Acro-Dunk)

I’ll never watch the show again. Not until it’s on next week. Those bastards.

It’s kinda bad when drama is so messed up that it confuses you to talk about.

But I’m gonna talk about it anyways!

Tanner updated his status on MySpace and called Courtney a hoe so Courtney was mad at Tanner for that and Tanner said it wasn’t him, someone must have hacked his MySpace, so he supposedly sent Tom an email and got an email back saying that the hacker lived in Pineville and Tyler saw this message so he believed that someone hacked Tanner but Courtney still believed Tanner did it so Courtney got angry at Tyler for believing Tanner instead of her so she yelled at Tyler and then Tyler and Courtney stopped being friends for a couple of days.

Did that make sense? I hope so. Buuuut now Courtney and Tyler are friends again and Tyler is still friends with Tanner, even though Courtney and I hate Tanner. And yes, I do believe that Tanner called Courtney a hoe on MySpace. But if I was Courtney, I wouldn’t make such a big deal out of it. People can talk all they want. It doesn’t matter to me. (No offense to you, Courtney.)

In PE, we had to run a mile yesterday. I made an A, but I’ve never sweat so much in such a short time before in my life. I guess I got really out of shape over the summer. I also made a 100% on my first geometry quiz, w00t w00t! For now, the only class I’m worried about is geometry but Mr. Toal seems like a really good teacher. I’m sure I’ll do okay. I also plan to join tons of clubs and stuff this year: Art Club, COPE, choir, Teen Court, Beta, and softball to name a few. I’m gonna have a lot of my friends and my boyfriend in Art Club with me, and Kayla wants to join Teen Court too. As for Beta — I know I’ll have Chris and Kim in there for sure. I mean, I’ll join the clubs I want to join either way, but it’s nice to have someone to talk to with you.

If anyone’s seen the list of things I want to do this year, you know that geting all the Left 4 Dead achievements was on it. I’ve been playing every day for the past few days and I now have 21 of 58 achievements. And that’s, uh, sort of good, I guess, considering I want to finished by the end of sophomore year and I just started school.

I just got done watching America’s Got Talent and the acts were pretty amazing tonight. I didn’t like G-Force that much (aside from the chick on the drums) and I was extremely upset that Jeffrey Ou’s mic stopped working because I adore him. But it was pretty epic and I can’t wait to see the results tomorrow night.

Anyways, I’m really tired tonight and I think I’m gonna go to bed early. Peace out.

truly yours,

With So you Think You Can Dance ending last week I took the time to watch AGT this week to get a fee

With So you Think You Can Dance ending last week I took the time to watch AGT this week to get a feel for what this show is about. Between last nights 2 hours and tonight’s show I found AGT to be an insult to the viewing audience. First they say the viewers are making the decision, then tonight the judges make a decision between the singer and the guy with the dog and the judges picked the guy with the dog!! Unbelievable!

Another thing that proved to be ridiculous was when the announcement for who was going to be leaving and who was going to continue the “dramatic” pause seemed to last forever. I timed one of the pauses and it was over 30 seconds. I guess they need to “kill” some time for whatever reason.

The only inspiration I get out of this show is to start watching grass grow. Now that seemes exciting in comparison.

I congadualte AGT because they are now being placed in the NOTHING file folder. This folder is set up for all those TV shows that are a total waste of time to watch. History Channels “Life After People” was the last show placed in this folder.

I have nothing else to add at this time except I now must go and water the grass so it will grow faster. SYTYCD will be coming on again September 9th and I am soooooooooooooo looking forward to the new season.

It has been an ongoing habit for me and my dad to guess who stays and who goes on results shows for reality shows like “America’s Got Talent,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “American Idol.” There’s no doubt that this also happens in many other households, maybe with even more intensity than in mine. We’re more of the “Yes! I got it right.” type viewers. Regardless of what game you may play at this time, there are many factors that apply when taking these educated guesses, especially when you don’t care for any of the contestants.

Side Note: Guest appearance by last year’s “America’s Got Talent” winner Terry Fator (comedian, ventriloquist, and singer) was awesome! Below is the first video of ten from his own show in Vegas.
uploaded by bignarutofan19 Watch the rest of the episodes by this user.

So here goes:
First group – Break Sk8 & Acrodunk – A six man group and a five man group, respectively. Acrodunk moves on to semifinals.

Second group – Kevin Skinner & Mosaic – Solo & Three man group – The man from Kentucky is in.

Third group- Drew Thomas Magic & Manuela Horn & Lake Houston Dance – Six assistants and magician & Solo & Twenty-something. For this one. Talent and lack of competition ruins the pattern. Once they presented this group, it was so obvious the magician was through. Well actually, the solo got three X’s and didn’t even get to finish performing so it’s all good. Smaller group is through.

Fourth group – The Diva League & Grandma Lee & The Platt Brothers – Eleven person group & Solo & Three man group – Grandma Lee is still in the competition.

Fifth group – Of course to every assertion, there are special circumstances – for when there is the same number of people in each group. When it came down to the final two – Tia and Arcadian – my dad calls out as the show goes to commercial that the girl is more talented and has the opportunity to sign contracts whereas for Arcadian he says, “He can’t dance his way to one million dollars” for the effect of the comparison that he can’t sign contracts for dancing. After proved wrong in the end when Tia was sent home because her opponent was more diverse in talent, my dad just ignored the results like nothing happened.

Did you notice above that the larger group has been sent home, and the smaller group or solo remained. Possibly the talent associated with smaller groups is not just a coincidence? But nevertheless, think about it, how much would it have cost the show to provide rooms for all those little girls from Houston and all those larger sized groups. And how much trouble would it have been to split the million dollars between all those people?

So either the show makes sure they save money by cutting out the larger groups or smaller groups are more talented. You decide. Or just wait until the next results show.

Worked through the weekend, so I ended up having today off which is nice even though they are kind of cheating me out of overtime. We have been doing a lot of hours lately; I had 17 yesterday, so it was really nice to sleep in a little. I have not really gotten much sleep since before Havasu, still a bit tired, but it helped a lot. This week has been finishing up the new set for So You Think You Can Dance, which will air tonight from the Kodak Theater. If I don’t forget then there will be a couple of photos with this post and a couple of more on flickr. It was all done with Ribbon Flex LED’s (the same stuff we used for Singing Bee) Our portion of the set was huge, and the carpenter and weld shop’s were slammed so it was a big game of hurry up and wait, but we made it.

This set did give me a chance to go over to the Kodak Theater 3 days. The set was designed and built to be used at the Kodak, and then in October when it comes back to CBS we could just add on to it and have a set for the next season of the show. Well, the design was off and it did not fit on stage at the Kodak so the crew there moved things around, and cut down some pieces and could not figure out how to get the LED’s back working again. It is kind of nice being the young guy from TV land and getting to go to a legit house and solve the problems for the senior guys. It is a bit frustrating though, because it is a legit house and I am at TV pay rate I am not allowed to do any work, just tell the crew there what I need and point to things. I did finally get them to realize that it was better if they just held a ladder and let me do my job so we could all get out of there.

Since we were so busy with SYTYCD and America’s Got Talent, the shop did not get the set piece for American Idol Built until yesterday. It was originally supposed to be on the truck at 8 last night and got pushed back to 10, and we got it on the truck at 11:45. We were a little late, but almost made it. We pre wired as much as we could through out the day while they were building and scenic was painting, but did not really get to start on the wiring until after 8pm. I was the only one there for the electric, but luckily one of the other guys from the department was there for one of the shows and was able to help me out, or we would have been really late. We actually had the thing lit up and had about 5 min left in cleaning up the wiring when it popped a breaker at 9:50. For some reason the power supplies that we had were not holding the load. We were close to maxing them out, but were still within the specs. I ended up having to split up the load over 4 power supplies instead of the original 2 that the bosses had bid the job at. This meant that we had to rip apart half of the wiring and just about start over. We should still do ok even though we did not make the time for the truck, and we used some extra parts, we still got it done in a lot less hours then what was bid. I don’t have any pictures of it, but I will try and get some, or you can just check it out during the auditions for American Idol. The piece is a US Map with the American Idol Logo across it

I guess that is it for now, I will post this when I get home from Baldy and get some Internet.

Meet Kari Callen!

Did you notice at about 45 seconds into the video where she says that the reason she is doing this is to “test the theory about her not being talented”?

She said in a sentence why high-performers act the way they do.

WHY?

To test the boundaries of possibility. To push high-performance even higher. To set a personal record. To master an impossible vision. To change the world in a way that others can only criticize.

Kari got two standing ovations for her performance and she probably deserved a third. You may not get a standing ovation for what you do…. ever. You may never get recognized for testing your theory. But you will know…

And knowing that within YOU is the ability to change the world is the first step in making a difference.

What theories do you need to test?

Tonight was Terry Fator’s 100 million grand opening at the Mirage in Las Vegas. Terry Fator is the most successful person coming out of the hit show America’s Got Talent. After the winning the show he first performed at the Hilton and now he is headlining Mirage in a theatre named after Terry Fator.

The first pictures of Terry Fator’s grand opening have been posted. Looks like a great venue and from the writeup, it sounds like the show is going to do really well.

Also, check out this video talking about a free Terry Fator puppet and biography.

Best of Luck to you and your Terry Fator. Fator Tots around the world would be proud of you.

The LA auditions of America’s Got Talent happened this weekend. Check out this first hand description of the America’s Got Talent auditions in LA. It’s really insightful to see what someone went through and what to expect at the show.

I’m a little sad for the person who did the description, because I’m afraid that the belly dancers were mostly invited to be there for the various cameo shots. I don’t think that they’re going to have major shot at being able to be on the show. It’s unfortunate that they probably didn’t have much of a fair chance.

Also, here’s an interesting update on Bianca Ryan, America’s Got Talent season 1 winner.
