It was once believed that India lives in its villages.

.

Now it is clear that India’s wealth lies in its cities, or more specifically, Mumbai.

India's Wealth Lies in Its Cities

A study conducted by Delhi-based SMC Global classified companies geographically on the location of their registered offices.

.

It reveals that Mumbai-registered companies account for 36.28% of the total BSE 500 market cap.

.

Some of the prominent names based out of Mumbai are Reliance Industries, L&T, HDFC and SBI.

.

Also, out of the market capitalisation ascribed to Maharashtra which has the highest market capitalization among the states — more than 90% originates from Mumbai.

In fact, Mumbai and six other cities account for 85.71% of the total market capitalisation of BSE 500.

.

With Delhi NCR (National Capital Region, which includes satellite cities such as Gurgaon and Noida along with the capital) contributing 27.82%.

.

After the financial and political capitals, state capitals take the fore.

.

Bangalore lays claim to 7.10%,

Hyderabad to 4.86% and Kolkata accounts for 3.83%,

while Ahmedabad and Chennai account for 3.35% and 2.47%, respectively.

.

On a state-wide basis, five states in combination with Delhi NCR and Maharashtra account for 94.20% of the total market cap.

A total of 66.17% of the index’s market cap can be traced to Maharashtra and Delhi NCR.

While the latter accounts for 38.35%, Delhi accounts 27.82%.

.

Karnataka accounts for 7.74%, Gujarat, 7.48%, Andhra Pradesh is at 4.95% and Tamil Nadu at 4.02%, while Bengal has 3.83%.

.

Though the big Indian companies have a pan-India presence with factories or plants located across the country, they tend to have registered offices in metros.

.

That is because of the ease of operations and presence of other corporate houses, suggested the study.

.

“The traditional metro cities have accumulation advantage.

Its ultimately the money which brings in more money.

As the Indian economy keeps evolving, tier-2 and tier-3 cities may catchup gradually, to bring-in more equitable distribution of wealth across the country.”

.

…said Jagannadham Thunuguntla, equity head at SMC Capitals.

It all started when Mrugank, who was previously part of the band HIV as a guitarist, had gone down to anand to watch one of his school mates, Nitin, perform live. With HIV already on the verge of splitsvilla, Mrugank was looking to form a new band and was in search for musicians with similar musical interest. After the show at anand, he decided to contact nitin and ask for his availability for a jam session.

Hence, a jam session was arranged at anant’s place. Anant had been playing with Mrugank for over a year by then and was the drummer at HIV. With a small a cozy jam room setup at his place, it was a great place to just let loose and compose music. Nitin and Ranjit joined the session to give it a try. The result of the first ever jam session by the band was musically evolving for each of the member. Ranjit roped in Ashwin to play bass for the band and the line up was complete

Nitin – Vocals, Ranjit – Guitar, Anant – Drums, Mrugank - Guitar and Ashwin – bass.

At the same time a prominent radio station had organized a rock competition for bands to participate with a chance to compose a jungle for the station. Grabbing the opportunity the band went ahead and registered itself. However when the call was made to the organizer a critical question came across to the band “Whats the name? ” With the organizer on hold, the band brainstormed with finally ranjit suggesting Vish (which initially was taken as Wish by Mrugank and Anant ) and voila V!SH was in existence and ready to rock the city. After the first show though Ashwin had to leave the band which made way for Dhaval, ex guitarist at HIV, to join the band on the Bass.

From the show at the radio station competition, the band went on to perform at various college fests like CEPT, DAIICT and were awarded the second runners up at the rock idols round held in ahmedabad. After a year or so of performances, the band decided to concentrate on their original compositions and tried to take the band on its course towards Desi Rock. Strong compositions played out with heavy riffs and beautiful lyrics line up the bands debut albums. The band however split soon after initial recordings with anant departing for pune to pursue his career.

Now, with almost a couple of years in sabbatical, the band has resurfaced again with new original music and more passion towards music, and have gone ahead with the production of their debut album at Megahertz!.

The band believes in playing music for the audience and hence keeps releasing songs on its community on facebook!. do check them out at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=191094530940&ref=ts

“VISH”ing all a rocking time ahead

The harassed husbands association took out a victory procession in the city on Monday following the central government’s directive to states not to make immediate arrests in dowry cases.

The Akhil Bharatiya Patni Athyachar Virodhi Sangh took out their ‘vijay yatra’ around 2 pm from Manav Mandir to Gandhiji’s statue at Income Tax. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked state governments to issue directives to the police not to arrest the husband and his relatives without proper investigations in anti-dowry cases.

The harassed husbands association president Dashrath Devda said, “Since the implementation of Section 498A of IPC across the country in 1984, it has been often misused by women for petty ends and to send their husbands and family members behind bars on false grounds.”

Outside court, the man and his family members are made to shell out a lot of money as part of the settlement, Devda said. “Our Sangh organised a lot of protests objecting to the gross misuse of Section 498A. Recently, the apex court said the section was misused. The court directive to the government that only after proper investigation should a man be arrested in anti-dowry cases is a blessing for harassed men,” he said.

“At present we have 48,000 cases of husbands being harassed by women. And every month we get around 250 such cases. Our organisation tries to help and save husbands harassed by their wives,” he said.

There is so much being written about the preparation of docile test match wickets that make the contest between bat and ball lopsided. It is annoying to read so many reports about this topic in the last few days. Tendulkar’s 20 years and the future of test cricket seem to be the hot topics of coverage everywhere. We shall intentionally stay away from all that hoopla and write about something that is becoming a global syndrome and not something that is specific to Indian wickets.

In the last five years, Lord’s, the home of cricket, has been no exception to tame draws. Since 2005, only two test matches played at Lord’s have produced results. England defeated West Indies in May 2009 and they defeated Australia in the Ashes earlier this year. Counting out the match against West Indies, that makes it 6 draws and a solitary victory.

Earlier this year, when India toured New Zealand, the test match at Napier petered out to a dull draw where India batted close to five sessions to see the match off. Only two out of 8 test matches played at this venue since 1979 have produced results.

The test matches played at Lahore’s Gadaffi stadium in the last two years have been high scoring draws. We need not remind you of the kind of surfaces England got in West Indies earlier this year when they failed to win a single test match after going down to Jerome Taylor in Jamaica.

In his column in the Sydney Morning Herald, Peter Roebuck doesn’t hide his disappointment about the slowing SCG surface:

With every passing year, the tracks seem to be slowing down. Take the mottled surfaces seen at the SCG this season. A more docile bunch of decks it’d be hard to imagine. Admittedly, the new ball had a bit of carry but it did not last long. Doug Bollinger had plenty of gas but before long was obliged to bowl stump to stump. Already Stuart Clark had adopted the same strategy. These blokes are top-class operators.

As we can see, the problem with batsmen-friendly pitches is becoming a global syndrome and is not specific to the wickets of any nation as such. What is more worrying is Mr. Daljit Singh’s retort to the criticism about the Ahmedabad pitch. He says that the curator’s act was justified as they did not want India to go down in a session like they did in the game against South Africa two years ago. India are better off preparing dust bowls and earning international censure as opposed to preparing such lifeless wickets where there is no turn even on the fifth day.

If there is any consolation, it is just that the wickets in South Africa continue to be sporting and produce results almost everytime. Maybe the curators there have a thing or two to teach their Indian counterparts.

AHMEDABAD: The state government got serious about congestion and conservation issues and has declared a deadline of two years to turn the Bhadra Fort area and Sabarmati Ashram area into pedestrian zones.

This was announced by state minister for tourism Jay Narayan Vyas at the third edition of Gujarat Tourism Summit hosted by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Saturday. Sabarmati Ashram is a big draw among foreign tourists and there have been several plans to turn it into a silence zone by diverting traffic.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has already announced a Rs 50-crore project to develop Bhadra Plaza, stretching from the 600-year-old Bhadra Fort to Teen Darwaza, as a walking tour destination.

The current congestion at Bhadra will soon give way to a pedestrian walkway and ethnic food restaurants and is expected to become a cultural centre.

In his presiding address, Vyas said, “Gujarat has been achieving significant growth in tourist arrivals since 2005. This growth has been based on the promotion of events such as Vibrant Gujarat, Navratri festival, International Kite Festival and Modhera Dance Festival”.

CII has targeted 1 million international tourists and 41 million domestic tourists by 2015.

Vyas added that the government would invest Rs 500 crore at Ambaji and Saputara in coming three years and promote Ambaji as a pilgrimage centre comparable to Vaishnodevi and Tirupati.

During the summit, participants pointed out a few issues like need to establish more budget hotels, create special tourism zones, develop eco-tourism, theme-based tourism, rural tourism and night life.

Buddhist conference in Vadodara

The state government will host the International Buddhist Conference from January 15 to 17 in Vadodara to promote Buddhist tourism since Gujarat has some valuable relics of Lord Buddha, said state minister for tourism Jay Narayan Vyas.

Dileep Premachandran has come up with perhaps a known argument -

This is a series where the No. 1 ranking is at stake. You’d think that results mattered. But while Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka leave little to chance as they pursue that ambition, India are content with being world leaders: at signing TV deals and producing bog-standard pitches.

And that’s something even Pradeep Magazine seems to agree with -

But what would sadden and hurt them the most is the way the Indian Board is allowing Tests to die a slow death.

And I still hold on to my earlier argument about how India must lead the revival of Test cricket. But, sorry, not with such tracks. The wicket saw close to 1600 runs being scored over 3 innings (1598 to be precise) and only 21 wickets of a possible 40 taken, and a side bowled out only once. These are staggering numbers, which of course will be forgotten in due course of time, only with the romance of a Tendulkar hundred still lingering in public memory. On the same day, only two Ranji sides – Tamil Nadu and Mumbai were able to clinch outright wins against relatively weaker oppositions in Punjab (not the same as 3 years back) and Himachal Pradesh. The rest of the matches played in both the Super League and the Plate League were dead draws as usual. So, here’s the diagnosis, but is the Board willing to treat the syndrome ? I heavily doubt it.

I have a simple theory when it comes to playing Test cricket. Quite a simple one, at that – if I may add – you play to your strengths and the opposition’s weaknesses. Here was an opportunity for India to come up with a result-wicket, to further their credentials as the number 1 team in Tests, and what they produce is dull, paata and flat wickets that leaves Test cricket in this country on a virtual life support. So, coming back to my strengths and weaknesses theory – if I were the Indian captain or Gary Kirsten (not that I’d love these roles), I’d have come up with a track which gave my players the best chance to win the Test i.e. a bowler-friendly wicket against an opposition that doesn’t adjust to seaming/swinging/bouncy conditions easily. Easier said than done, because it has been proven in the past that even Indian batsmen to an extent, tend to look human themselves on these wickets. And if someone comes up with a futile argument that India’s strength is spin-bowling, I’d have to disagree vehemently. Neither Harbhajan Singh nor Amit Mishra possess the ability to run through sides for starters and when both of them are struggling to find their rhythm, I don’t even see a remote possibility of that happening.

As observed in the past few years, we have a tendency of making a fool of ourselves when it comes to preparing wickets for specific oppositions. You don’t prepare a green top as it was done in Nagpur against Australia in 2004 or in the same vein, not at least against South Africa as they did in 2008 at Ahmedabad, when Dale Steyn & Co bowled the Indians out for 75. That’s a) foolish and b) self-defeating. But where you can and you must ensure a green top is against sides like Sri Lanka, whose batsmen may not have the ability to last themselves on these wickets. The game, if played on a green track might last 4 days or not even that, but at least you give yourself and even the opposition (if their bowlers are good enough) a chance to win the game. And, if the Indians consider their strength to be spin bowling, there are specific oppositions – the so-called “poor players of spin” – to produce what I’d call crumbling pitches or minefields. Of course, with the quality spin attack that Sri Lanka possess even with an off-colour Murali, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath – a crumbling pitch in this series may only result in an embarrassment. And off-late, commentators tend to believe that India’s pacers have done well at home as compared to the spinners and hence, a green top seems like your best chance of forcing a result.

It’s a case of now or never for India when it comes to uplifting the standards of cricket in this country – be it at all levels. Ranji Trophy or international cricket. It’s all fair to conduct a tournament like the IPL or even the Champions League or whatever it is called, which probably the BCCI uses as a facade to mask all its ills at the grassroot level. About time Indian cricket stops living in this denial about what the IPL has done for the game in India, and about time they introspect and realize what they have done to Test cricket or even first-class cricket in this country. If all we care about is stupid landmarks like a 43rd Test hundred or 30k runs for Sachin Tendulkar, sure we must continue to produce such wickets. But sorry, if you want to be the World no. 1 team, you need to win as many games and series as possible. And hey, if you’re aiming for the top, your batsmen and bowlers must be able to play in all conditions, including green tops.

Last thoughts – the BCCI must ensure severe penalties – which may include a ban for 2 years – at venues which produce dead tracks. Set a precedent, others will take note and start producing good cricket wickets. Now is the time we can and we must ensure that Test cricket survives, if flourishes seems too optimistic a word, in this country. About time the BCCI cared for the game.

Call that a pitch? With sponsors in short supply for this Test series, the BCCI erred by not looking to Rajasthan’s quarries. Some countries use drop-in pitches. Ahmedabad presumably used a slab of marble that was then painted a dull brown. On it, 21 wickets fell in five days, including eight in the final nine sessions. Most of those dismissals were boredom induced, with batsmen finally tiring of taking candy from babies. Seven centuries were scored and while there were three or four great batsmen on view, not one will make a list of all-time-great innings.

Whine all you like about Test crowds, but who’d spend good money to watch this kind of rubbish? The days of one TV channel are long gone, and Indians have better things to do with their time than watch boring Test cricket. It’s not as though the BCCI’s incapable of producing result-oriented pitches. The 2001 series against Australia was one for the ages. The 2004 one wasn’t half bad either. But over the past five years, this is the 11th draw in 24 Tests. Just not good enough, and a poison pill for a form of the game that’s already threatened by the relentless advance of Twenty20.

What are 48 hours? Nothing much. Just 2 days. This is the obvious response that I expect from any no

What are 48 hours? Nothing much. Just 2 days. This is the obvious response that I expect from any normal person. And even I was such a normal person till now.

But thanks to a train journey to Chennai, I realized what 48 hours actually meant.

My organization decided to send me to Chennai for some work and I swear that the first things that came to my mind was coconuts & lungis(!) [Nothing personal here] I was excited at the prospect of going to Chennai as I had never gone so south in my life! Also, this shall help me add another city to the growing list. [Note – One of my aims of life is to visit 100 Indian cities. Read other such aims here]

And the train route which IRCTC’s site had allowed me to take, was about 2500 Kms, starting somewhere in Rajasthan, then passing through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh & finally to Tamil Nadu. And though my decision of not taking my laptop with me was born out of sound reasoning like ‘why take a liability while travelling’ & ‘security’, I did realise about the graveness of my mistake, much later on.

It is very rightly said that when you don’t want to get bored, then the entire universe conspires to bore you. I had my reservation in II AC; which unluckily got upgraded to IAC. And that too in a coupe! Now, it was not me, but my fate that decided that, Dev will spend his entire journey talking to just one person who would him in the coupe, and not many like there are in IInd or IIIrdAC. And apart from Ahmedabad, there were no big stations in route to Chennai. Luckily, I grabbed this opportunity, and bought a fiction. Chetan Bhagat’s 2 States.

For those who have already read it, might recollect that a major chunk of the book is written with Chennai as the background. And this was indeed a great help to me, as I could make tentative plans about places to visit in Chennai. [Thanks Chetan...your book acted as a guide book for me]. And let me add a nano-book-review here – 2 States is much better than One Night @ Call Center & 3 Mistakes of my life. But still, not as magical as Five Point Someone. Though, I strongly recommend this book.

Only problem with the book was, that I devoured it in less than 4 hours. And I was left with nothing but magazines, some songs in mobile and an old person besides me to communicate. And I still had more than 1500 Kms still to go.

This was the point when I realised that sleep is also a means of entertainment in such a long journey. Though I don’t sleep much, I had no better options. So I slept. I slept whenever I had nothing else to do. And just imagine how frustrating it would be to have someone staring at you continuously? This act was performed by a Tamil Nadu Tourism’s poster depicting a tiger, which had huge eyes staring out of the poster all the time. It was terrible.

One night when I was about to doze off…it just came to my mind, that apart from a stupid update, I had not written a post for a long time. My blog was in a sort of dead state. Somehow, after my Desert Bike Trip post, I did not have any inspiration to write. But, as they say, out of desperation, courage is born, so is this post. In the middle of night, I started writing this post in ink and paper…

[Please don’t analyse my writing – Its universally known to be pathetic]

So, after travelling in train alone (effectively though), I did eventually realise that 48 hours is something huge. It is actually a lot of time. I don’t want to give a lecture here, but we can utilize our time in ways that are unimaginable. Time is power. Real power.

I finally did reach Chennai, after, you guessed it…48 hours on train. And frankly speaking, I have never before been so happy to see a railway station.

And after reaching the city, I travelled as much as I could. Went to Marina Beach, T. Nagar, another beach whose name I cant remember, Mahabalipuram, Kovalam beach and likes…

Below are some of the pictures which I shall share with the readers…

And by the way, Chennai is much more about Coconuts & lungis…its a beautiful place and a lovely city. Though language was a problem for me. But it had its own charm.

[P.S. – After Chennai, I went to Bengaluru & Ahmedabad...but I have no pictures to share from there due to reasons known to the virus which fell in love with Bengaluru & Ahmedabad pics.]

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a tiny strip of land sandwiched in between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. It is a town in between the long straight well maintained Mumbai- Ahmedabad highway. This small union territory might look small and insignificant compared to the giants surrounding it, yet it is one of the best examples of India’s true nature. Irrespective of its size this union territory one can give a taste of India.
Amdawadis are known for their musical interests. From sell out concerts by bollywood playback singer

Amdawadis are known for their musical interests. From sell out concerts by bollywood playback singers to mesmerizing gazal nights, each musical gathering has a strong feel of participation from the audience. However if we move away from commercial music towards other genres, we hit upon the rising cult of rock music lovers.

Though English music is still being perceived as backstreet boys and bryan adams, the rock music scene has been changing in the city. And with bollywood music also adapting to more fusion compositions with rock elements, the audience is getting far more accepting to the overdriven guitar. From rock shows witnessing a modest turnout of 150-200, despite of free entry, about a year ago now witness rock enthusiast in numbers over 500 f or a paid entry! Its great to see people sporting children of bodom shirts all around. The rock attitude sure is catching up with the city.

It’s the quality of music which finally matters and with invigorating new talent coming up besides the experienced bands, there is a strong sense of serge for the rock music movement. A proper platform with strong support is what is needed to provide the impetus for the scene to surge ahead. Lets work towards a more organized rock scene for the city of fafdas and jalebis !

cheers

P.S. Any ideas feel free to give me a buzz we are working on a few and will keep you guys posted
