Du står i ditt eget kjøkken.

Etterhvert.

Ah, sim! Quase esqueço: naquele box do CEASA o Elephant Garlic custa R$12 a cabeça.

From a longer time I used to think that Big O notation O(n) , isn’t really much practical. I was reading section 1.4 of Data Structures and Algorithms by Aho, Hocraft and Ullman and was unable to understand how big O notation was being discussed. I asked for help on comp.programming and saw not many people agree with me. I hope this discussion will help you broaden your programming skills

Here is the relevant discussion. It is not the full discussion, it is filtered. I have posted here only those replies the ones I trust. Any posts, that I don’t trust or I have no idea about whether to trust them or not, are not included:

That’s the very point of the O(.) equivalence classes!

It doesn’t matter whether you’re considering n or n+1, the question is
that you’re on the same curve, the square curve, and that sooner or
later you will go beyond resources.

Well, on a square curve you will go beyond resources much sooner than
on a linear curve. And on an exponential curve, you’ll go beyond
resources much much much sooner.

Read again http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_O_notation

     T(n) = O(n²) as n->∞
∃M∈ℝ, ∃n₀∈ℝ, ∀n, n>n₀ =>  |T(n)| ≤ M|n²|

Now, T(n) = (n+1)² = n²+2n+1 ≤ n²+2n²+1n² = 4n², so you can take M=4, and

           ∃n₀∈ℝ, ∀n, n>n₀ =>  |T(n)| ≤ 4|n²|

Yes, it is of use at a practical level. Being able to do complexity
analysis on your algorithms, will let you know whether your program
will have enough time and enough memory to process the user data.

It can always work on the two or three data items you use in your
tests. But what will happen when the users will feed it a thousands,
a million or a billion data items to process? Will it still be as
fast and and thrifty, or will it need 500 ExaBytes of RAM and 15
billion years of processing time?

–
__Pascal Bourguignon__

—————————————————————-

> This is from “Data Structures and Algorithms” by Aho, Hopcraft and
> Ullman, Page 31, Example 1.4

> Suppose T(0) = 1 and T(1) = 4, and in general T(n) = (n+1)^2 . Then
> we see that T(n) is O(n^2) .

I assume you mean that T() is a function – something like:

fun T(integer n)
integer d = n + 1
yield d * d
nuf

> I did not get the last line. If T(n) = (n+1)^2 , how it can be
> deduced that it is T(n) = O(n^2). n^2 is never equal to (n+1)^2

Big-O is a rough-and-ready measure of worst-case workload in relation
to the amount of data that must be processed.

Multiply 123 by itself *by hand*, showing all your working and taking
no shortcuts, and count how many separate multiplications you have to
do. Now repeat the process for a four-digit number, eg 9287. Then do
it for a five-digit number, and so on up to ten digits or so. Plot
your results in a graph, and observe the shape of that graph.

For 123, for example (and remember we are not taking any shortcuts),
we need to multiply 3 * 3, 3 * 2, 3 * 1, 2 * 3, 2 * 2, 2 * 1, 1 * 3,
1 * 2, and 1 * 1. We also need some shifts and adds, but never mind
those. Nine multiplications for a datum three digits wide. For four
digits, we have to do sixteen multiplications. And so on.

>that it is T(n) = O(n^2). n^2 is never equal to (n+1)^2

One way to think of this is that you’re usually interested in how well
an algorithm scales when n gets large, and when n is large, n^2 and
(n+1)^2 become more and more identical.

>no use at a practical level.

I’m going to go with “you really should understand this”.

I was on a project (I was doing the front-end, another guy was doing the
back end), and things were working swimmingly–until we opened the site
for beta. As soon as we got about 2000 registered users, the DB died
under the load. Now, mind you, this wasn’t 2000 simultaneous
users–this was just 2000 users registered.

I never found out exactly what was happening in the back-end code, but I
suspect there was some kind of O(N^2) process (or worse) running back
there. It was fixed, and the site went on to get 100K or so users
during its short lifespan (it was a site to market another product.)

But you have my sympathies, because there’s so much completely accurate instruction on this topic that is utterly impenetrable to most
newcomers. (In their defense, it is a difficult concept to present
well.) Here are a few links that seem popular and not too bad (I only
skimmed them):

I wish we had been working more actively with this along our design studio over the semester as much of what I find in my essay could have come to good use this year. I’ll take it along for next semester however and hope I get to write more over the years. I think this is the first essay I write where I feel that I’m getting a lot back from the writing process myself.

We switched between moving around by foot and by tube every other day to get a combination of rest for the legs and fresh air. This little alleyway here is right around the corner from the Barbican Cantre where they had a great exhibition of Le Corbusier’s work as well as a cool experimantal rapid prototyping exhibition in the Curve.
On Easter Sunday we went tomorning mass in St. Paul’s Cathedral. The accoustics were amazing while the choir sang, but the sound technician who put up the speakers for the preacher didn’t do his sound test before he left I think. It was a really nice experience to see such a great religious building in use and not just full of people being told to turn off their cameras.

This week I’m wrapping up my essay on the use of diagrams in contemporary architecture and the main focus has been on UN Studio and the Design Model. It is very interesting to think of what a design process means and how knowledge is carried on and expanded upon in each project.

On Sunday I’m off to Paris to combine business and pleasure as I go on a school trip and meet up with Sabrina half way through the week to get some time with her as I’m down there anyways.

This week we had interim presentations of concepts and sketch productions to get critique on our approaches and methods.

Several teachers gave feedback as well as the students

The teachers were represented by both architects and engineers even if most of the work might not be on a structural level yet. The engineers found some concepts to engage in too at least.

A lot of cool concepts were shown and the variety of approaches was really interesting to see. Everybody were searching for their own way into the project and many different sources of inspiration were shown.

I ended up building my studies of the situation on the documents found at nordhavnen.dk and the information I had available about the Excentral Park project. As Marius Nygaard asks us to bring focus to sustainability this semester I looked into some books on the subject and found more source material on what is already known and working concepts in that field.

Future Forms and Design for Sustainable Cities and The Green Skyscraper gave me some good ideas to build my design features around. On the side I work with how I should tackle the program requirements to create a design that responds well to the concepts of social sustainability as well.

On Thursday Dahl & Uhre Arkritekter came in and gave us a lecture about their work with Mosaïc Region and Excentral Park – Edge Dynamics. They contributed a lot of material that gives superb input for anyone no matter how they’ve decided to take on the project I think and they also let us in on many of their own principals from the design process.

Yesterday and today we had presentations of thoughts around the program of our buildings in Nordhavn

Yesterday and today we had presentations of thoughts around the program of our buildings in Nordhavnen. Everyone contributed with their thoughts on a given part of the basic program requirements or themes like sustainability, both in ecological and social sense. The class will collect our joint effort into a compendium that we all can share and work off our collective diagrams and written material.

I’m working myself with establishing my understanding of the site in its greater context to make sure I can make a contribution that takes on a conscious role in several scales. I’ve sorted some of the material made available at nordhavnen.dk for the competition and tried to find some points that are relevant to me on a single building level. The material presented in Excentral Park (EXP) reflects on a lot of the material already and I believe it is important to try to further strengthen some of those points. I will also keep in mind that the project will stay on a theoretical level. This will let me make some ideological points, being aware that their existence is made possible through the theoretical means of the assignment given.

A group of students also participated in a workshop with Marius Nygaard over the weekend. It was a brainstorm for round 2 of the competition in Nordhavnen. Bakgård has several photos from the work and also got linked from 70N’s blog. Dahl&Uhre are also actively blogging about the projects progress.

I’ve decided to write on the topic of the diagram as a tool in contemporary architecture for my essay this semester and have started to read source material and taking notes for that. Other than that we have weekly tutorials in groups discussing the history of architectureal theory. The discussions usually turn out to be a really nice arena for critique and discussion of how we see our future roles as architects.

This post still got quite long and full, so I’ll promise to hold off posting until I have some graphics to share.

Buona giornata!

In an attempt to get AndersSletbak.com up and going I’ve decided to make this temporary (for now at least) blog. The aim of the site will in time be to document my own work, both individual and in co-operation with others in a portfolio as well as a blog/news part. At the moment I don’t have time to set up a full site and get into how all of that will work so I figured that it will be easier to keep the blog active for now.

I’m a norwegian architecture-student at AHO in Norway after starting my education at UTS in Australia in 2007. Both sites include a little online gallery where some student work is available. The AHO Arena is currently updating with work from the last weeks Diploma project Exhibition.

I hope I’ll update the blog with content from my production as well as links to curiosities i come across. At the moment my class is doing our preliminary research for the semesters design assignment based on 70°N arkitektur’s 1st Prize proposal for Nordhavnen development in Copenhagen, Denmark. I’ll try to update on the status of that as the assignment progresses.

That’s all for now, hope it’s gonna be many shorter, single-theme updates instead of this length from now on.

Hilde Haslum´s PhD dissertation Reading Socio-Spatial Interplay has raised today at AHO crucial ques

Hilde Haslum´s PhD dissertation Reading Socio-Spatial Interplay has raised today at AHO crucial questions on potentials and risks of conducting a research by design. Haslum has presented her work as a “search for a way of combining architectural and social analysis in order to investigate socio-architectural interplay in current processes of urban transformation”. Field analysis, photo-documentation, crossing of empirical data, interviews: this operative choice invests empirical material of critical importance. As precisely noted by the opponent Kirsten Simonsen from University of Roskilde, empirical material can never be an objective reality, it is indeed always a representation of a selected way to look at the world. In this sense it can never be neutral, nor it can be innocent. Interviews are always the result of a dialogical process between the interviewer and the interviewed, the former contributing to the final statements as much – if not more - as the latter, being able to direct the discourse in a purposeful direction. Photography, again, is a medium in which technical choices are crucial to the significance of the final image, often beyond the shooted subject. Then one can ask how much representative such material is, especially in a research environment. In which way empirical contributions can negotiate a stance, in order to be proved documentations in a research? In Hilde Haslum´s work there is also a question of scale. The relationship between an assertive generality, necessary in a research investigation for its outcome in the discipline, and the reality this investigation is grounded in, is also critical. “Microanalysis” has been here the chosen operative mediator. This question is crucial in my research also. When I talk about “perceptions” the immediate question is “who´s” perceptions? Which degree of generality one has to accomplish for a research to be such and have a relevance within the disciplinary field(s)? There in also an issue of comparability hidden within the lines. How opportunistic can we be in the choice of core concepts while building an argument in a comparative dialectical process? ”Micro” is a very specific approach that I believe has a great potential, for its manifesto-like declaration of its intrinsic limits. Yet one must be very conscious about the extension of one´s arguments – in space, as well as in the conceptual landscape the research is situated. Scale has a role in determining the degree of affirmative will behind a gesture, a piece of poetry has not the same rhetoric as an ephic poem. But, on the opposide side, if the micro remains such without claiming to become a general principle, can it still be called research? Perhaps yes.
