JAZZ IT! 2008 on wood

I adore Placebo. Molko’s voice can make anybody miserable. You either love it or hate it.
Saw them Thursday at Ahoy, Rotterdam (wonderful place). And after other concerts here in Netherlands I conclude: Dutch people don’t dance!!! Cultural differences?! I danced.

Gister naar het Backstreet Boys concert geweest in Rotterdam. Jeugdsentiment zeg! Al die oude liedjes en wat nieuwe liedjes…. Kevin is eruit en dat mis je helemaal niet… Heb echt genoten, maar halverwege het concert voelde ik me opeens ook een beetje verdrietig… Zoveel jaar geleden stond ik er ook. Zoveel dromen en naiviteit..

Nu, 10 jaar later, zijn zij er nog, ben ik er nog. Geen van mijn dromen zijn uitgekomen, ben helaas een stuk nuchterder. Waarom ben ik nog niet verder gekomen, waarom heb ik niets bereikt. Zucht….

Het vallen van mijn wolk is een stuk vervelender dan verwacht….

Vrijdagavond ben ik geweest naar de Jonas brothers in Ahoy. En het was geweldig. Ik wist niet wat ik moest verwachten maar dit was zoveel meer dan ik had verwacht.

Hun tour heet ‘Concert in the round’ en het podium staat dan ook midden in de zaal. Dit was perfect, omdat iedereen een goede plek had. Ze zongen bekende liedjes als S.O.S, Paranoid, Hold On en Burning Up.

Wat gebeurde er zoal:

• podium draaide rond
• Kevin sprong van het podium af
• Joe die een camera nam van een fan en een foto van zichzelf maakte en het publiek
• Nick…wel hij zag er gewoon fantastisch uit met zn hoedje

They know how to give a show and I enjoyed it. Jonas are great.

…en het was breathtaking, geweldig mooi en één van die avonden die nooit mag ophouden.

De allerliefste kon niet, dus Bekka ging mee. Good old days, want in 2003 waren we ook in de Ahoy. Dit keer gingen we netjes met de trein op een normaal tijdstip en niet zoals in 2003, toen we er al om 3 uur s’middags stonden (overigens stonden we toen wel vooraan <3 ).

En ja, de ipods gingen mee in de trein, want meeblèren doen we graag.

En de Ahoy raakt voller…

…en voller.

En ja, we zaten ver bovenaan, waardoor MUSE op kleine poppetjes leek die je met liefde in je zak wilde stoppen. Ik haat only-internet-sale voor tickets…ik sta liever 5 uur van te voren bij het GWK voor kaartjes. Maar, we hadden kaartjes, we konden alles goed zien, we werden niet pletgedrukt en hoeften niet te vechten voor ons leven (2003 en 2006 :/ ) en de bar was achter ons!

biffy clyro was er als support. Maar ik kwam niet voor hun dat ik vond ze niet zo interessant
(en mijn telefoon heeft echt een crapp kwaliteit maar de batterij van de camera was natuurlijk op…)

MUSE had echt het waanzinnigste decor <3

En met het meest bombastische einde wat je maar kunt bedenken was het de meest geweldige avond

Ik had ook filmpjes, hele mooie zelfs, maar daar schreeuwen Bekka en ik zo hysterisch doorheen dat ik dat niemand wil aan doen (:

I wasn’t really prepared, but it was kinda hectic yesterday, so I didn’t bring my camera (DAMN IT!).
I had to make pics with my mobile (3.2 MP, no flash, hmpf). Oh, I also made vids, but they’re a bit of bad quality, baah…

My coworker told me the origin of the phrase “Shake A Leg”. Now, I’m going to tell YOU. So in the Navy, men could “sneak” women or their wives on board for cheap tawdry sex (the best kind). This was encouraged so that officers wouldn’t feel compelled to desert in an exotic port.

When the time came for the ship to set sail, the ladies would “show” or “shake” a leg from under the covers in the bunk. This would grant them time to dress and abandon ship, so to speak.

I was a wee brokenbranches when I first encountered the raw Vedder vibe live, bareley seventeen years of age. Although I was at the concert with my high school sweetheart, I remember only having eyes for one man and he was a blur of testosterone, flanel and hair up on stage. The whole experience had me feeling very woozy I recall.

Tonight, 13 more years of maturity under my belt, not much had changed. There he was, same curly long hair, same contorted face while he sings, hanging out of the mic stand. And there’s that amazing band. I love the fact Pearl Jam always play a decent dose of the old stuff to get the crowd going, none of this “we’re only playing our latest” crap.

And the crowd lapped it up, every last note. There were one or two songs from their upcoming album Backspacer as well as oldies, such as the seldom played Brother from the Ten era, and everything in between. Twenty eight (!) songs worth. They had me right from the start by opening with Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, a personal favourite I’d never heard live before. Great choice for opener as well: as Eddie sang “I just wanna scream helloooo”  the house lights came on to greet everyone.

Eddie was quite chatty, telling a funny story about how there were people waiting outside their hotel. The band was bummed they didn’t have time to talk to them or sign anything so they just greeted them in passing. Turns out it was just a bunch of people standing in line for the bus, “we were very embarrassed, but they were so friendly, asking ‘hey how are you?’”.

Black was introduced with the words “This is what happens when you fall in love with a Dutch girl”, and Wish List had some extra lyrics at the end: “I wish I wasn’t a travelling man, I’d settle in Rotterdam”. Towards te end of the show he also said “It might be another three years before we see eachother, or it might be a year and a half”, followed by a pause and then ”..or maybe ten days..” which immediately lead into the first encore Life Wasted.

This last remark has already surfaced on Twitter as a possible reference to Lowlands! Here’s hoping, cause I certainly wouldn’t say no to another helping of Pearl Jam. During both (lengthy) encores they had the entire stadium up on their feet screaming for more, a really great night in Ahoy.

Win Your Race Seminar met Johan Bruyneel (ploegleider Lance Armstrong) en Carl Van de Velde

In maart 2010 wordt er een speciaal programma georganiseerd voor het bedrijfsleven, een 1-dags seminar “Win your Race in Business”. Dit zal een Event zijn met Carl Van de Velde en Johan Bruyneel, de teamdirecteur en motivator achter de 7-voudige Tour de France winaar Lance Armstrong en winnaar van de Tour de France van 2007 en 2009, Alberto Contador. Hierbij zullen de winnende principes van topsport samenkomen met het toepassen hiervan in het bedrijfsleven, door concrete tips en strategieën te leren die organisaties onderscheiden van de rest.

De vraag wordt benatwoord, hoe kan het dat al jaren sommige sporters, teams, en bedrijven, structureel de concurrentie verslaan in zowel goede als in mindere tijden! Wat voor duidelijk herkenbare rode draad loopt er doorheen, en hoe kan je dat binnen je eigen bedrijf of leven gebruiken om verder te verbeteren.

After my roommate went to the dentist and came back gleaming, saying, “There’s gaps in my teeth I didn’t know I had!” I had to go. I was jealous of her two toothbrushes kicking in the holder, one with shiny typed lettering.

So I went online to find a dentist, and picked out the one with the most glittering internet reviews, whose patients left paragraphs dotted with smileys.

I laid in the chair and flipped to CNN while the hygienist, Sally, and I talked about summer. I asked her about the relationship between my teeth and diet coke, and she said I’d save lots of money if I never drank it again. “And what about coffee?” I asked timorously, not wanting to hear the answer. “It’s better than water!” she exclaimed. I sat back, happy. She asked me to open up, and started the checkup, tapping my teeth, holding my tongue with that little mirror, finally pulling her paper mouth cover aside. “Your teeth are gorgeous,” she said. “We’ve gotta protect that natural resource!” I loved her for saying that. My teeth are a natural resource, I thought. Like the Tetons. The dentist came in, and was all compliments, too. Somehow the words “solid as a rock” sounded great coming from him, and not like a GMC commercial.

In between the raving volley of compliments, I didn’t notice the duo luring me into a committed series of work, totaling thousands. Did I miss the sedative session? It must have been after Sally slipped out a camera pen, straight from a spy novel, and took stills of my teeth. Or was it when she gave me the mood pencil and a bright green bag that “looked like me.” Or maybe it was on my way out the door, as the receptionist handed me a fresh baked, chocolate-still-melted cookie, wrapped in bakery plastic and slapped with a silvery “Smile!” sticker.

Whatever their toothfairy charm, I’m sure to be back, complete with a rent-sized check. As long as they let me hold the remote again.
