He seems to be a forgotten star in his own hometown of Hyderabad. It is the birth centenary of one

He seems to be a forgotten star in his own hometown of Hyderabad. It is the birth centenary of one of the finest football coaches ever in Indian history — S.A. Rahim — the man who guided the national squad to a semi-final appearance in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and to two gold medals in the Asian Games.

But ironically, not many at home are even aware of this. No individual or institution has done anything to mark the occasion.

But for his son and himself a former Olympian, S.S. Hakeem, it was a special year. And to his delight, it was the West Bengal Football Association which decided to honour the late Rahim by instituting the ‘best coach’ award by his name in the IFA Shield every year henceforth.

“This is a wonderful gesture. However it hurts me to realise that there is no-one in my own city even to organise a token function in remembrance of the great coach,” said Hakeem, a 1960 Olympian, in a chat with The Hindu.

Jobless

Ironically, Hakeem, who was also a FIFA referee in 33 matches too is ‘jobless’ like many of his illustrious contemporaries. “Where is the chance to give back something to the sport? In Hyderabad, no-one knows who is in charge of the game,” says the former Olympian. “If everything is in order, why we would think of looking only at Bengal. Obviously there the sport has better patronage,” he said.

By coincidence, Dronacharya awardee, Syed Nayeemuddin, who led India to a bronze in the 1970 Asiad, who is another pupil of S.A. Rahim, was in Hyderabad and he too lamented the lack of opportunities to serve the game in Hyderabad.

Unlike many others of his age, Hakeem at 67 can make an under-19 player feel ashamed of his fitness. “This is one of the traits which I picked up from my father,” he says proudly.

When Shivkumarlal, a former top AP Police official, introduced the A-Division Rahim league championship, it was then deemed as not just a tribute to the great coach but also an effort to see that the tournament and the State continues to produce top quality players. However, now the tournament is in the doldrums.

“It is not just the sport which is dying. Even the attitude of some of those who are in a position to do something is condemnable,” said Hakeem.

Grim reminder

Another grim reminder of the plight of football in Hyderabad is pointed out by S.R. Sukumara, former Director General of Police. He said that he was pained to note that the Union Sports Ministry which wanted to financially help the 1956 Olympians, could not ‘trace’ the addresses of some of the Hyderabad players who were members of that team, and thereby could not help them.

Only last week, AIFF observer C.R. Visswanathan was in the city in a bid to thrash out the differences between the warring groups and to set the AP Football Association in order. He also felt the AIFF would do well to organise an exhibition match in the city in memory of Rahim.

Right now, like many fans, even Hakeem is keeping his fingers crossed — hoping against hope for a change of script on the football field in his hometown.

Hey All! Here is how you convert files in iTunes… The default file format for audio in iTunes

Hey All!

Here is how you convert files in iTunes…

The default file format for audio in iTunes is the proprietory format .aac or “Advanced Audio Coding” and it is not compatible with a lot of video or audio editing software. So we have to convert the file type to one that is readily utilized.

Mp3s are compressed audio formats meaning that they are squished down to remove “unnecessary” information (bytes) to make the file smaller at the expense of audio fidelity or quality. You never want to work from or to the Mp3 format (unless you have to)… It is in essence a squashed audio format used (badly) to make audio files smaller to fit on to mobile mp3 players.

Now we want something “lossless” or uncompressed audio so that we can get the best sound with the full range of dynamics (high, med, low frequencies)… and that is where .wav (Wave) and .aiff (Audio Interchange File Format” which is a quicktime version of wave). These are full quality audio files and they are big! But we don’t need to worry about big audio files on a computer… as long as you are keeping your HDD (hard drives) clean, yo!

Okay so we need to convert the iTunes default format of .aac to .wav or .aiff. We can do this using iTunes… !

NOTE on file formats…! These: .aac, .wav, .aiff, .doc (word document), .jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group) etc… ARE all file “extensions” used to signify file type and alert user and computer how to use/read the file.

We are gonna change some of your settings in iTunes … So please, write down the original settings so you can change them back after you are done with the conversion.

Okay… So open iTunes. Go to > iTunes > Preferences >(window “General” pops up) > Click on “Import Settings” > (new window “Import Settings” pops up) > Click on “Import Using” drop down list and select: .aiff or .wav > Click on the “Settings” drop down list and select: “High Quality…” > Click “OK” to close “Import Settings” window > back in the “General” window navigate to the “Advanced” Tab/Icon > Under “iTunes Music Folder Location” click “Change…” to put the new files somewhere else on your computer away from your iTunes music (I use my desktop… after i create a folder for the files to go to) > Click “Ok” on the “General” window.

Now… find the music that you want to convert in your iTunes Music and highlight the song or songs (using control-click) and go to “Advanced” (top toolbar) > click on “create wave (or aiff) version. iTunes will then convert the file and save it to the specified location. It will also show up in your iTunes music folder. Navigate to the new folder using the finder and there you go!

Enjoy!

Digital audio is “IN” and it’s here to stay. More and more people are storing there media on their

Digital audio is “IN” and it’s here to stay. More and more people are storing there media on their computer hard drives these days. This means more compressed audio, and therefore, loss of quality. Very few people I know are exclusively buying music online that is in high-resolution, uncompressed format. Examples of such formats include AIFF, FLAC, and 320kbps mp3’s. The reasons people typically aren’t purchasing these formats is because they’re either not willing to spend the extra money (usually $1.49 compared to $0.99) or from fear they’re run out of precious hard drive space. I think the former is the only legitimate reason. Hard drive storage has never been so cheap (1TB for less than $99 these days).

With the realization that most everyone is downloading low resolution, compressed audio, what can be done to revive the fidelity when you want to play it clean and clear on your 2-channel stereo or new speaker setup? The answer is surprisingly simple and relatively inexpensive. The solution comes to us from PS Audio and it’s dubbed the Digital Link III. The Digital Link III is an awarding winning DAC (digital-to-analog converter) that accepts inputs from any digital source including a computer through USB. The Digital Link III is one of the best sounding DAC on the market and the best one PS Audio has produced in its 21 years of D to A converter design and manufacturing.

What can you expect from the Digital Link III? Sweet, open spacious sound that is a real treat to listen to. The DLIII adds a warm, natural sound to your music collection. Your music will have more body to it. Simply put – your music will come back to life, as it was intended by the artist who created it before it became swallowed by the compressed world of digital audio. Connect to any CD or DVD player’s output or connect to your computer. The DLIII will decode any stereo SPDIF output stream with 24 bit precision. Use the DLIII to improve the performance of any CD player, transport or media device such as Sonos, Squeezebox, Apple TV or I-transport. Connect any computer to it through USB as well.

Features

Stereo D to A converter

Optical input

Coaxial input

USB input

24 bit DAC

Front panel select 192kHz

XLR and RCA outputs

192kHz upsample circuitry

8 times oversampling filter

Single stage IV converter

Discrete FET output stage

Benefits

Plays just about anything

Upsamples 44kHz to 192kHz

CD, DVD player or computer

Warmest sound DAC ever

Subterranean bass response

Sweet open top end

Fully balanced

Low noise

One new feature Quality Audio Video would like to see on PS Audio’s Digital Link III successor is RS-232 and IR control. Having either (or both) of those features would allow us to program our clients RTI or Crestron control systems for seamless operation of the DLIII from anywhere in the home, including the comfy sofa so you don’t have to get up everytime you need to swap inputs. Most DAC’s on the market with this level of engineering, build quality and sound performance will run you around $2K. But not the DLIII. No no. The DLII will only cost you a cool $699 MSRP.

Good day internet.

I was writing about this to a friend and thought lets share
Years I was looking for the perfect rip.
Hours, days, weeks, months I played with PC and Mac. Using such software as EAC, Max, XLD and what more. Setting up the software testing disk drives to find the right one. Doing “exact” and “perfect” copies that took hours. So okay I was looking for some information and find this friendly audiophile forum where slightly older guys I guess are just a little more obsessed with the quality of sound than with the quality of music. Personally I’m more like an audiofool who much rather spends his money on CDs, LPs, a bottle of wine and some cheese cookies, but occasionally I do buy nice hardware to play it all. Anyway long story short, these guys with their ten thousand Euro/Dollar worth of speaker sets, they rip everything with iTunes (error correction switched on, the rest switched off) and say: EAC, XLD, exact perfect what ever hour long rip stuff is BS to them. iTunes they say is bit perfect… I think yeah what ever and move on… But I think, I have this double CD by John Coltrane and the last track of disc 2 always gives me shit. EAC, Max, XLD, all in exact or perfect rip mode wont even rip the disc–EAC over night didn’t move a bit. But did almost burn my cpu out of the pc. So last night I gave it a go, CD in the Mac, iTunes, error correction switched on, the rest switched off, don’t care about tags, just wanna see how it goes. 128 seconds later the complete disc is in my iTunes and of course I start playing the last track first. It was crystal clear, NO hiccups, no scratching noise, nothing wrong! It sounded perfect. I got a big smile on my face, but wanted to be sure this wasn’t a coincidence. Quickly I grabbed that pile of bad discs, all with buts and dents in them and all were till now impossible to rip for me. Well, same story! One maybe two minutes per disc and all the known to be bad songs (songs with skips etc.) were now playing perfect. This all made me happy and sad. Sad ’cause I realized how much time I had wasted the last 4 years, but happy took the lead (hey always handy to have a good excuse to finally open that bottle of wine you were saving for this special moment LOL). I figured I’d bore you all a minute with it, ’cause I had to think of the wise men on so many forums and blogs, who all will tell you why a rip ain’t a rip without that EAC log file. And I had to think how my own rips back in my ‘pirate days’ were downloaded twice as much when I added the now somewhat meaningless words “ripped with XLD accurate mode”, or “EAC secure mode”. It made me laugh, I hope it’ll make you laugh when you read some wise ass on a blog telling the world how his rips are the best blah blah, ’cause he just wasted precious hours of his probably short life (Long rip sessions with crappy EAC, XLD are bad for the heart LOL).

Don’t forget to enjoy the music, it’s not just bits and bytes. I’m ripping some more AIFF in iTunes.

Cheers

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Fade Out.

In unserem Fall z.B.

While watching the Confederation Cup, I happened to wonder about India. More specifically, why a country with 1.1 billion citizens never been to the World Cup ? Why has India’s soccer team never ranked higher than 100 since 1993?:(

Football, as described by one of its greatest players as “the beautiful game”, football, the game that the poorest of the poor can play and succeed in, football, the game that has been defined by UNICEF as the greatest unifier of children across the globe.

In India, like cricket, football was imported by the British as a summer evening pastime. The first significant privately formed club was Mohun Bagan, who went to create history in 1911 by beating East York Regiment 2-1 in the IFA Cup final. Later, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting also challenged the British regime time and again with their performances on the field.

Post independence, Indian football reached new heights. The five Pandavas led by Appa Rao played for East Bengal as they conquered one Asian club after another, that too bare foot. Excellent results followed in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, with Neville D’ Souza’s hat trick in 1952 and India reaching the last four the same year.

In fact, India could have been the first Asian country to play WC Football in 1950, but for the fact that they wanted to play bare feet, something which FIFA didn’t allow; despite Nehru’s best efforts (North Korea later had this distinction).

Asian domination was on for the next decade, with India winning everything in sight. One brilliant footballer came after another – Sailen Manna, T Ao, PK Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, Peter Thangaraj, Shyam Thapa and others.

Famous goalkeeper of 1970 Tarun Basu was considered the best goal keeper ever produced in Asia who used to pick up high lob ball in just one hand in front of the opponent players with ease .

However, all good things seem to come to an end – so did Indian domination in football. India, once ranked 7th by FIFA in the world, began to spiral down from the early 70s, reaching a Nadir in the early 2000s – a 157 rank. Currently India is languishing at 147 in fifa rankings. The other Asian countries like Japan, South Korea, UAE and Saudi Arabia made rapid strides while we kept on sliding back.

What were the possible reasons? Let’s have a look :

(1) Club over country –This debate, a comparatively recent phenomenon in European leagues, started way back in 1970s in India. Club football, especially for East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, was highly rewarding compared to national duties, especially in monetary terms. Playing for clubs like Mahindra and Mahindra and JCT also ensured jobs. Injuries picked up in domestic tournaments made a player skip national duties, and led to a decline in performance in the long term

(2) 70 minute matches in domestic football – In India, domestic football matches were of 70 minutes duration – this was fine as long FIFA did the same, however, when international matches began to be of 90 minutes from the early 50s, India failed to catch up. Most of the players were physically conditioned to play for 70 minutes, and multiple goals were conceded in the last 20 minutes

(3) Influx of foreign players – in 1970, AIFF opened the doors to foreign players to play in the local leagues. The intention was noble – to improve the level of football of domestic players through competition. However, it started to have a negative effect. The clubs arm twisted AIFF to have more foreign players per team than stipulated initially – this was done with the short term goal of winning tournaments and earns a quick buck. However, big bodied players (mostly African), mostly rejected by their local leagues made little or no impact other than injuring the smaller sized Indian players. They were mercenaries, and fled after making a quick buck. Only a handful, like Majid Basker, Jamshed Nasiri and Chima Okorie contributed with their experience to help the Indian players.

(4) Growth of cricket post 1983 WC – when Kapil Dev help the Prudential ICICI Trophy aloft at Lords’ on that memorable Saturday evening, it sounded the death knell for most other Indian sports. Sponsorship money flew in to cricket, leaving other sports high and dry. Indian youth no longer found it practical to play football to run their families or attain fame – cricket was THE GAME. Hockey survived on for some time, but only because it was still our national game

(5) Lack of sponsorships, prize money and apathy of the Government– continued from the above point. Only a handful of Corporates wanted to sponsor this sport, now a distant second to cricket in popularity. Even the Government’s interest gradually began to fade. The Indian Govt probably sees no reason to fund sports which their people have no interest in, and since the cultural impetus isn’t there to start the other sports up they just don’t get going. There are no takers for football… But India is a culture of cricket, and football is at best a second tier sport (competing with tennis, field hockey, even chess). So, until Nike’s money starts trickling down to the youth development level, and India can get good coaches (Bob Houghton is not exactly Alex Ferguson) India will not be good. But the future is bright.

(6) Lack of Proper Facilities and Infrastructure – Infrastructure and playing facilities in the top clubs and at district level is very poor. Low standard of training facilities, grounds, stadiums, hotels amenities etc; in the country add to soccer woes. Considering the fact that there is a huge turnout spectator during matches involving big clubs, lack of facilities is totally unacceptable,” said Spittler.

(7) Decline of Santosh Trophy – our national tournament, once the hotbed of discovering new stars, slowly reduced to a no-show due to bad scheduling and negligence by clubs (who refused to leave their “star” players), AIFF (did not care to find sponsors) and players themselves.

(8) Politicization and bureaucratization of the sport – Like most other Indian sports, the apex body, AIFF was headed by a politician (for close to 20 years, it is now held by another politician), who ran it like his personal fiefdom. Most of the top positions were given on basis of political affiliation, and the state bodies became hotbeds of corruption.

Money reserved for sport or anything for that matter, often fills the pockets of bureaucrats. When it comes to soccer selection it is essential that a minimum no. of players are recruited into the teams from each zone. Zonal selection policy turned biased and partial of late.

(9) No international tournaments in India – we had one, the Nehru Cup, where we dominated the best teams to win at one stage. Even when we lost, we had our boys play against top teams across the globe like Cameroon, Romania and Mexico. Gradually, this tournament died, again due the factors like low sponsorship and lack of interest. Thankfully it was revived last year and we emerged as the winner of Nehru Cup first time.

(10) Lack of icons in recent times - Cricket has lots of them, shooting had its Jaspal Rana, Anjali Ved Pathak and now Abhinav Bindra, athletics had PT Usha and Anju Bobby George, even Golf had Jeev Milkha Singh. However, in recent times, there has been no footballer who has been held in that high a regard. IM Vijayan, Jo paul Ancheri and Bruno Coutinho were great footballers, but they had little or no media appeal. Bhaichung and Sunil Chhetry in recent times have had their moments of glory in the media, but are not really in the same league as the cricketers. Baichung’s Bury FC stint too, has been thrown off in the dustbins of history.

(11) Climate – Climate is other factor. Playing football for 90 minutes in 100-120 °F temperature is not easy task for not so big build up Indian guys.

(12) More importance to education - Negative attitude of parents taking Soccer not as a Full time career option for their children is another reason for the lack of interest for soccer in this country. Our government spends many times more on education than on sports. Parents don’t feel that a full-time career in this game can provide economic security to their children.

Is Indian football beyond revival? I don’t like to believe so, in fact, I pray to the contrary.:)

As an audio engineer, I’ve always wanted to hear just how ‘bad’ mp3s are proclaimed to be in audiophile circles. Just listening to music, I can tell if the data is wav (or cd audio) or if its mp3 (128 kbps or lower). But the 128 kbps files never sounded awful to me, just a little below the quality of the original. So I decided to put mp3s to the test: the reverse polarity test.

Technically, if the polarity of one sound file is reversed to be the complete opposite of its original and both are played back simultaneously, the result will be silence. The sound will cancel itself out. And this is exactly how the reverse polarity test is used… to make sure one file and its ‘duplicate’ are exactly the same. If the sound doesn’t perfectly match, there will be some sort of resultant audio.

I applied this test to an original wav file and its mp3 version. If both were the same, complete silence would occur when one of the polarities is reversed. However, that’s not what happens. The result you hear is what is different between the two sources; what the mp3 contains that the wav file doesn’t. Take a listen for yourself and be just as surprised as I was!

02 Crusoe

Crusoe result 2

For ease of download, both of the audio files are in mp3 format. The reverse polarity test won’t work on these exact files, but you can still hear the huge difference. If any of you would like, just email me and I will send you the originals.
