Imagine those words being spoken in the 1960’s, after Corman had directed films like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, THE INTRUDER, and THE WILD ANGELS. His progeny of talent, including Jack Nicholson, Francis Coppola, Martin Scorcese, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Robert De Niro, Peter Bogdanovich, Bruce Dern, Robert Towne, Jonathan Demme, Stephanie Rothman, Ron Howard, Joe Dante, John Sayles, James Cameron and many others, evolved into the foundation for the New Hollywood of the 70’s and beyond. Without Corman’s belief in fresh ideas and visions, however exploitive at the root, many talented and important filmmakers might not have had the chance to break celluloid ground. So it’s apropos that one of the industry’s biggest outsiders was finally awarded an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar on Saturday along with Lauren Bacall and Gordon Willis. As when Ray Harryhausen was presented with one after decades of envy and indifference, it’s good to see the Academy acknowledge artists who created outside its respect or attention. Though I’m disappointed the statue wasn’t presented to Roger Corman during the live broadcast — just to see a cavalcade of Panavision AIP images before the world.

A Marinha Real Australiana (Royal Australian Navy) está desenvolvendo um projeto, denominado Sea 1000, para uma nova geração de submarinos diesel-elétricos da ataque, que vão substituir seus seis SSG (submarinos de mísseis guiados) da classe “Collins”, a partir de 2025.
As especificações dos novos submarinos serão bem diferentes dos atuais submarinos convencionais em uso ao redor do globo: altas velocidades de trânsito, grande autonomia e grande capacidade de processamento acústico – capacidades associadas normalmente a submarinos nucleares de ataque.
O programa de desenvolvimento Sea 1000 será o mais caro já feito pela Austrália na área militar. Serão US$ 23 bilhões para construir, equipar e operar os submarinos.
O programa colocará em competição, em 2010, um projeto desenvolvido localmente com um design COTS (commercial off-the-shelf). A opção COTS será baseada no “Collins”, com melhoramentos atendendo à especificações para operações litorâneas e ataque terrestre.
A nova geração de submarinos vai incorporar as tecnologias de vanguarda australianas, européias e americanas na área submarina, principalmente na área de propulsão e armazenamento de energia.
A razão disto é que os submarinos australianos necessitam transitar pelo menos 1.600 milhas para alcançar suas áreas de patrulha no Mar do Timor e 4.500 milhas para chegar ao Golfo Pérsico ou o Mar do Japão.
Os atuais “Collins” foram especificados originalmente com uma velocidade de trânsito submersa de 16 nós, com snorkel, para 10.000 milhas náuticas de autonomia. Mas a velocidade de trânsito teve que ser reduzida para 10 nós, devido às limitações tecnológicas da época.
Quando um submarino convencional transita, ele passa 70% do dia navegando com baterias e 30% do tempo “esnorqueando”, usando os motores diesel para recarregar as baterias. A velocidade de trânsito é determinada pela capacidade de armazenamento de energia elétrica, pela energia necessária para mover o motor elétrico e pela habilidade do submarino de gerar energia, enquanto mantém a velocidade trânsito. A maioria dos atuais SSKs mantém 8 nós de velocidade de trânsito.
Novas tecnologias na área de motores elétricos e armazenamento de energia vão possibilitar maiores velocidades de trânsito, bem como maiores velocidades táticas e mais energia para os sistemas de gerenciamento de combate.
O desenvolvimento e o emprego de supercondutores de alta temperatura (HTS) tornou possível a produção de motores elétricos e geradores que tem somente 20-35% do peso e menos da metade do volume dos motores antigos.
Motores HTS serão de importância fundamental para os submarinos, pois são de 3 a 4 vezes mais eficientes, com cargas parciais.
Um submarino em patrulha, usando de 30-40% do potencial de um motor HTS, consumirá muito menos suas baterias. Isto terá um impacto significativo na “taxa de indiscrição” do submarino, reduzindo o tempo de uso do snorkel.
Motores HTS também são mais silenciosos e atingem densidades de força que eram antes alcançáveis somente por uma turbina a vapor em submarinos nucleares.

Somando-se ao desenvolvimento dos novos motores, estão chegando as baterias de íons de Lítio (Li-ion), que oferecerão 4 vezes mais densidade de energia que as atuais de chumbo-ácido. As baterias Li-ion têm melhor ciclo de durabilidade, permitindo recargas mais rápidas e pesam muito menos.
A eficiência na força e energia dos motores HTS e das baterias Li-ion proverão espaço para a adoção de um sistema AIP nos novos submarinos.
Um sistema AIP fornecerá energia para velocidades de patrulha e será fundamental para enfrentar táticas inimigas de “hold-down”, quando forças adversárias cercam uma determinada área e aguardam o fim da energia do submarino para que ele venha à superfície.

Diminuindo o “gap” entre o submarino convencional e o nuclear

As novas tecnologias HTS e de baterias Li-ion, somadas às AIP, farão com que os novos SSG possam competir com os submarinos nucleares em muitas características operacionais.
Os desenhos preliminares dos futuros SSG australianos sugerem um comprimento de 86,5m, boca de 11,3m, deslocamento de 4.250 toneladas (com 10% de reserva de flutuabilidade), motor de 12 MW, 3 geradores diesel de 4 MW e baterias de 60 MW/h.
Com motores HTS e baterías Li-ion, o SSG poderá conseguir velocidades de 25 a 27 nós, sustentáveis por 5h, e velocidades de trânsito de 16 nós, com alcance de 10.000 milhas náuticas (com 30% de indiscrição).
Com velocidades de patrulha de 4 nós, o SSG terá uma indiscrição diária de apenas 2,5% (em torno de 30min), para “esnorquear” e manter as baterias em carga plena.
Para diminuir a vulnerabilidade do submarino enquanto usa o snorkel, a Austrália tem feito avanços significativos no uso da técnica “active cancelation”, para a redução das emissões em banda larga provocadas pelos motores diesel. Os novos submarinos vão empregar uma versão aperfeiçoada do sistema de gerenciamento de assinaturas usado nos “Collins”.
A diminuição da seção reta-radar (RCS) dos periscópios e do snorkel também está sendo buscada, através do emprego de RAM (radar absorbent material) e formas facetadas.
Várias empresas estão trabalhando em conceitos de SSG para a Austrália, entre elas a Kockums (que agora pertence à Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems alemã) e a Northrop Grumman americana.
Alguns setores políticos americanos estão interessados em trabalhar junto no projeto dos novos submarinos australianos, fornecendo tecnologias, para tornarem os EUA novamente um fabricante de submarinos convencionais e, se possível, um exportador.
Alguns defendem que o sensível aumento no desempenho dos futuros submarinos também possibilitará a adoção dos mesmos pela US Navy e Royal Navy, pois ambas as marinhas estão lutando para manter suas forças de submarinos nucleares, com os orçamentos cada vez mais limitados.
Por outro lado, as marinhas menores que adotarem as novas tecnologias em seus submarinos convencionais, poderão aumentar sensivelmente sua área de influência e capacidade de dissuasão, por uma fração do preço de aquisição e de operação de um submarino nuclear.

Palin describes her last 12 months to students at the Wasilla School For The Deaf.

For those of us not lucky enough to be from the Great State of Alaska, it is hard to imagine that prior to last year, we had no idea who Sarah Palin was. It now seems that not a day can go by without the subject of Caribou Barbie popping up on television, radio or in print media. She is both cheered and jeered, but not in equal amounts. She has a small but loyal following of uneducated, religiously intolerant, white, racist homophobes that dote over every one of her incoherent Twitter tweets. Those out-of-touch fanatics however, are vastly outnumbered by the scores of civilized Americans that view her as an imbecilic light-weight worthy only of the status of  the target of comedic barbs. Nonetheless, Sarah Palin’s trajectory over the last year has been like that of a shooting star: attention grabbing but short lived prior to burning out.

Indeed, the last twelve months have not been kind to the quitting ex-governor of Alaska. Shall we take an itemized look at some of the unfortunate events that have engulfed Sarah Palin over that period?

- She was revealed by Republican Presidential nominee, John McCain to be his running-mate. The American population responded with a resounding, “Who?”;

- It was revealed that the pedigree of her educational background consisted of attending 5 different mediocre colleges in 6 years before managing to attain only a bachelors dgree;

- It was discovered that the “family values”, “abstinence only”, evangelical christian politician had been impregnated prior to her marriage to the “First Dude.”

- It had been discovered that the “family values”, “abstinence only”, evangelical christian mother had an unwed pregnant teenaged daughter;

- She had those disastrous unscripted televised interviews with Charles Gibson and Katie Couric in which she could not name a single newspaper, magazine or periodical that she reads and failed to be able to name any Supreme Court decision other than Roe v. Wade;

- She could not accurately describe to a fifth grader the role of the Vice President of the United States;

- She was mercilessly lampooned by television comics, the most notable being Tina Fey;

- It was revealed that the “Country First” Sarah Palin’s spouse had been a card carrying member of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) who’s main agenda is to have the state secede from the United States;

- It was revealed that Sarah Palin, in her capacity as Governor of Alaska, had possibly attended AIP conventions and definitely provided official videotaped supportive messages to at least one of their conventions;

- Her sister-in=law and the mother-in-law to be of her pregnant daughter were both arrested;

- It was revealed that she actually said, “Thanks” before saying, “Thanks, but no thanks” regarding that “bridge to nowhere”;

- Subsequent to learning that Palin unsuccessfully tried to pressure Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan to fire her own brother-in-law (Mike Wooten), the Branchflower investigative report stated, “that Palin abused her power as governor and violated the state’s Executive Branch Ethics Act when her office pressured Monegan to fire Wooten.” The report also stated that “Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates to advance a personal agenda, to wit: to get Trooper Michael Wooten fired.” The report also said that Palin “permitted Todd Palin to use the Governor’s office [...] to continue to contact subordinate state employees in an effort to find some way to get Trooper Wooten fired.” from the state police;

- She uttered political hate speech by repeatedly claiming at political rallies that Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama had been “palling around with terrorists”;

- John McCain and she were soundly defeated in the 2008 Presidential election;

- It was revealed that she accepted over $ 150,000.00 dollars worth of clothing for herself and her family from the Republican National Committee at a time when most working class Americans were suffering through an economic recession;

- She was found to have breached ethics and tax rules for failing to report as income, certain unreimbursed travel expenses and per diem housing allowances while acting as Governor of Alaska;

- With more than two years remaining in her term, she quit the office of Governor of Alaska;

- Despite her degree in journalism, she elected to have her memoir written by a ghost-writer;

- While opposing health care reform legislation, she fictitiously claimed that the reform would contain “death panels” to shorten the lives of senior citizens; and

- Her husband, Todd quit his job with oil giant British Petroleum.

And that my friends (as John McCain would say) is only a partial list of the series of unfortunate events that have surrounded Sarah Palin in the last year. Will there be more in the upcoming year? “Ya Betcha !!!”

Planet of the Vampires (Italian title: Terrore nello spazio) is a 1965 Italian science fiction/horror film directed by Mario Bava. The film stars Barry Sullivan and Norma Bengell. The screenplay, by Bava, Alberto Bevilacqua, Callisto Cosulich, Antonio Roman, and Rafael J. Salvia, was based on an Italian language science fiction short story, Renato Pestriniero’s “One Night of 21 Hours”. The story follows the horrific experiences of the crew members of two giant spaceships that have crash landed on a forbidding, unexplored planet. The disembodied inhabitants of the world possess the bodies of the crew who died during the crash, and use the animated corpses to stalk and kill the remaining survivors.

Tagline:  This was the day the universe trembled before the demon forces of the killer planet!

The film was co-produced by American International Pictures and Italian International Film, with some financing provided by Spain’s Castilla Cooperativa Cinematográfica. Ib Melchior and Louis M. Heyward are credited with the script for the AIP English-language release version. Years after its release, some critics suggested that the film’s narrative details and visual design appeared to have been a major influence on Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979).

Production:

American International Pictures had achieved a great deal of commercial success in the early 1960’s with Bava’s Black Sunday (1960) and Black Sabbath (1963), as well as dozens of lesser Italian films, including several sword and sandal pictures. Eventually, AIP heads Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson decided to coproduce some of these films, rather than just pay for the rights to distribute them, in order to have more control over their content. Planet of the Vampires was one such coproduction, financed by AIP and Italy’s Fulvio Lucisano for Italian International Film, along with some Spanish production money provided by Castilla Cooperativa Cinematográfica. AIP provided the services of writer Ib Melchior, whose previous movies had included such modest hits as The Angry Red Planet and Reptilicus, as well as the relatively big budget Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Melchior wrote the screenplay for the English language version of the film, with some assistance from AIP producer Louis M. Heyward.

American Barry Sullivan and Brazilian Norma Bengell led the cast of international actors. Writer Robert J. Skotak reported that each castmember “used their own native language on the set, in many cases not understanding what the other actors were saying.
Sullivan’s lines were spoken in English, Bengell’s in Portuguese, Evi Marandi’s in Italian, and Ángel Aranda’s in Spanish.

Restricted by a low budget, Bava was unable to utilize opticals, so all of the film’s extensive visual effects work were done “in camera”. Miniatures and forced perspective visuals are used throughout, with lots of colored fog adding atmosphere but also obscuring the sheer cheapness of the sets. Bava explained: “Do you know what that unknown planet was made of? A couple of plastic rocks — yes, two: one and one! — left over from a mythological movie made at Cinecittà! To assist the illusion, I filled the set with smoke.” According to Tim Lucas, the two plastic rocks were multiplied in several shots by mirrors and multiple exposures. The planet’s exterior sequences were filmed on an empty stage obscured by mists, table top miniatures, and Schüfftan process shots.

Trivia:

• This was the film on which Mario Bava’s son, Lamberto Bava, began his career as his father’s assistant. Lamberto would latter become a director himself.
• This film had more then 15 titles before it was decided to be Planet of the Vampires.
• German Import DVD has a Super-8 Version (German language only), as a special feature on the disc.
• Director Mario Bava used the mirror-based Schufftan Process to combine live action with miniatures and thereby avoiding the costly matte/optical printing techniques.
• In 1965, American International Pictures distributed this film, dubbed in English and titled “Planet of the Vampires“, on a double bill with Die, Monster, Die! (1965).

Evi Marandi

Futureworld is a 1976 sequel to the 1973 science fiction film Westworld. It was written by George Schenk and Mayo Simon, and directed by Richard T. Heffron. The cast included Peter Fonda, Blythe Danner, and Arthur Hill. There is also cameo appearance by Yul Brynner in a dream sequence. This would prove to be Brynner’s last film appearance. Other than Brynner, none of the cast members from the original film appear in this one.

The film attempted to take the plot in a different direction from the Westworld movie, but it was not generally well-received by the critics. The film was deemed as lacking in action and the acting was not engaging. It was made by AIP (its predecessor was made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which later bought AIP’s successor Orion Pictures).

Futureworld was the first major feature film to use 3D computer generated images (CGI).   CGI was used for an animated hand and face. The animated hand was a digitized version of Edwin Catmull’s left hand. The movie also used 2D digital compositing to materialize characters over a background.

Remember when Sarah claimed that the reason Todd was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party (for seven years) was that he checked the wrong box? And then she freaked out? Remember the email she sent to Steve Schmidt, McCain’s chief strategist?

“That’s not part of their platform and he was only a ‘member’ bc independent alaskans too often check that ‘Alaska Independent’ box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan,” Palin wrote. “He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed.”

The only problem is, there is no “Alaska Independent Box”.

You see, due to my recent move, I had to fill out the State of Alaska Voter Registration Application. This is the form you fill out when you register to vote for the first time, and you have to do it again when you have a change of address. So, while filling out the form, I noticed the “Political Affiliation” box.

You can see that there is no way someone with average or above intelligence (I’m going to go ahead and assume Todd is at least average) would “accidentally” pick the Alaskan Independence Party when they meant declaring themselves an Independent. The main reason is that Independent is not a choice. You can choose from Nonpartisan or Undeclared. It clearly states that Nonpartisan means you have no party affiliation and Undeclared means you just don’t want to declare your party affiliation.

So, there you have it. Check off the box for another one of Sarah’s lies proven false.

Większość maturzystów w ostatnim roku nauki w szkole średniej poświęca się głównie gorączkowym przygotowaniom do nadchodzącego Egzaminu Dojrzałości. Nic w tym dziwnego, nauki jest bardzo wiele a czas ucieka zbyt szybko. Jednak w całym tym zgiełku nie należy zapominać o ostatecznym celu edukacji czyli ścieżce zawodowej.

Na pewno większość z Was (mam nadzieję, że zdecydowana większość) ma od dawna sprecyzowane cele zawodowe. Dla tych, którzy cały czas wahają się pomiędzy życiowymi wyborami, chciałabym dać małą podpowiedź. Opcja ta dotyczy osób zaradnych, przedsiębniorczych. A mowa o Akademickich Inkubatorach Przedsiębiorczości i szerokich możliwościach rozwoju jakie dają każdemu, kto nie ukończył jeszcze trzydziestego roku życia. O możliwościach tych mogłabym pisać naprawdę wiele ale lepiej przedstawi to poniższa prezentacja. Poza tym, jeśli kiedykolwiek myślałeś/ myślałaś o założeniu własnego biznesu zachęcam Cię do samodzielnych poszukiwań informacji. To także forma przedsiębiorczości !

Sorry for the odds and ends post, but I wanted to share with you a couple things that are important, albeit unrelated.

First is what’s happening with Texas political media.  In case you’ve missed it, Evan Smith is leaving Texas Monthly to start the “Texas Tribune,” a non-profit news agency that will cover deep political issues of Texas.  I’ve heard some describe it as Texas’ own “POLITICO,” which would be incredible.  He’s amassed an impressive cast of characters from across the state to join him, including Texas Weekly’s Ross Ramsey.  From the Texas Tribune press release:

Incoming Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith announced today that the non-profit public media organization has acquired Texas Weekly, the premier newsletter for government and politics in Texas, and has hired longtime Texas Weekly editor and owner Ross Ramsey as its managing editor. In other news, Sarah Palin seems to be catching some eyes lately.  For whatever reason, a growing number of people seem to think she may break from the Republican party for form an independent third party.  These theorists claim that her resignation as Alaska’s governor was the first step toward that goal.

As a unique voice in the Republican party, Palin has both her supporters and detractors within the party.  I would imagine that most–no matter their thoughts of her–don’t want her leaving the party, though.  Former Gov. Mike Huckabee voiced his concern not long ago, as The Hill mentions:

Huckabee said that he hopes Sarah Palin is not thinking of “going independent,” as she brought electricity to the Republican Party in her run with John McCain. It might be worth wondering if she is thinking of running in 2012 as a candidate for the Alaska Independence Party (AIP).

Palin has been on eight trips outside her Anchorage base since announcing her resignation.

Palin leaving the GOP does, however, line up with her recent comments that she would gladly campaign for Democrats. If she’s trying to build a coalition of voters for her new party, whatever it might be called, that would be a necessary first step.  Keep your eyes focused Northward…  That might be where the action is, come 2012.
