Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines reports that it’s talking with Boeing about a deal t

Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines reports that it’s talking with Boeing about a deal to buy 23 737s.

The deal would double the size of the airline’s fleet by 2012, according to Bloomberg News. The report says the deal would be worth $2.3 billion, but in reality, an order for 23 737-800s — the primary plane in the Pegasus fleet — would be worth about $1.7 billion at list prices, meaning the airline would pay about $1.1 billion after what analysts say are typical discounts.

Pegasus already has planes on order from Boeing, having placed firm orders for six in 2006 and another six in 2007.

Pegasus has been busy lately. In October, it formed a joint-venture with the government-owned airline of the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan to create Kyrgyz Pegasus Airlines, which will start offering service this month from Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, to Russia, China, Kazakhstan and Turkey. Pegasus has also formed a codeshare agreement with German carrier Air Berlin to sell seats on each other’s flights, particularly those between Germany and Turkey. The airline also is planning an initial public stock offering in 2010, with the goal of selling a 25- to 30-percent stake in the company, which now is solely owned by Turkish investment company Esas Holdings.

Prague, here I come again!!!

They say, once you touch this statue,St Jan Nepomucky, you’ll most probably return to Prague again! How do you think about it? Well, I’m doubted it when I first heard about it, but still, I did what everyone else did, I touched it!

And believe it or not, I’m going back there again! Prague, for my second time…

In 2006, during the winter holidays, me and my friends travelled to Hungary, Czech Republic and Austria for 12 days. After that trip, Prague is the only place that always lingers on my mind! Wondering when I will travel back there again!

It feels like I’ve left something very important behind and I will have to get back this time! Yes, I left the most memorable memory there, embedded together with the Charles’s Bridge!

Once you fall in love with Prague, you will never stop recalling you best moment in Prague in you life again! It is a very unique city, the whole city’s just like a lively-castle or fortress, so peaceful and tranquil, bringing you back to the castle-age!

Soon you stepped in the heart of Prague, you will feel as if you’re turned into one of the princes or princesses, lingering around in the city! You will wonder how on earth there’s such a magical city when you see the astronomical clock! Taking picture on the Charles’s Bridge with the Castle on top of the hill as your background will make it one of the most precious memories in your life. You won’t be bored while walking along the streets, seeing those buildings in different kinds of architectures!

I miss Prague so much! Feels like I’m going to meet my old-time friend again!

Prague, the city that you will fall in love no matter how many times you go there!

I just bought my air ticket yesterday thru Airberlin because of the special promotion! 98euro for 2 ways le, from Moscow to Berlin…For this coming winter holiday, I’m going back to Prague again. For those who wish to travel to middle Europe, I think Berlin or Vienna would be you best stopover before you continue your journey to other countries as there’re cheap airline hubs in both capitals, Airberlin and Niki Airways, and the distance for intercity travelling to other cities are so convenient and short! Like me, I will travel from Berlin to Prague which will only take a few hours if travelling by buses or trains.

It’s always interesting to see which low cost company’s profile is most checked. Even if it doesn’t provide any positive or negative value, it does however, testify to blog trends in airline popularity. In an effort to track and monitor these trends, I’ll update this twice a month. This is now time to publish Ryanair, esayJet and Air Berlin web blog trend.

First thing that I noticed is that despite what I could have thought Ryanair is less mentioned during this period than the previous one. I thought that BBC Panorama programme “Why hate Ryanair” would generate much more blog post. However as we see on the chart around October 12, the big peak is due to BBC panorama programme. We clearly see a gap between and after the show. I think that most of the mentions were generated via Twitter and FaceBook, and not via blogs. Blog pulse only counts Blogs, and the fact they are less spontaneous must explain why Ryanair blog trend is not as high as expected.

EasyJet still holds its second place. The orange company realised its peak around October 15, but when you look at the result page, easyJet had no special event which could explain its peak.

Air Berlin had no special event during this period which explains why its curve is linear.

In other words Ryanair still manages to takes the crown!

I had an interesting discussion on twitter today with Damian Corrigan of Spain Travel. He made me no

I had an interesting discussion on twitter today with Damian Corrigan of Spain Travel. He made me notice that Ryanair seems to use tips to reach top time performance. He says that he realised the last times he travelled that “the advertised flight time was one hour and twenty minutes. The flight itself only took 50 minutes”. a smart strategy in order to “artificially pump up their punctuality.” The thing is, when you want to check punctuality figures one usually refers to IATA figures, of which Ryanair is not a member. I found an interesting website that can give an accurate idea of time performance standards. (here is Ryanair on time performance ratings)

Hence, when Ryanair claims it is 88% on time, it’s more like 74%, therefore 14 points less. The website rates on-time performance on “the 20 most active routes for each carrier based”. On Ryanair’s busiest route between Dublin and London, Ryanair only reaches 58% on time performance. We are far from reality. Actually, the problem does not only concern Ryanair: average time performance is quite bad. According to the website, on its 20 most active routes, easyJet obtains an average of 67%. Far less than what the company actually claims. More interesting even: between Rome and London, Ryanair only reached 19%, with an average of 42 minutes. Is that even possible!?

We find similar figures with easyJet for flights between Palma Mallorca and London with only 13%.

To be fair, I also checked Air Berlin and Vueling on time performance. Another surprise, these two companies, which do not communicate on their figures reach much better rates. Air Berlin reaches an average of 81% and Vueling 83%. Jet2, on the other hand, only reaches an average of 58%.

So as we can see, you can always make numbers say what you want them to. The battle on time performance between Ryanair and easyJet is therefore quite ridiculous when you consider the independent figures.

A319 Air Berlin a Venezia

I was checking easyJet and Ryanair’s September low cost traffic figures when I heard about Air

I was checking easyJet and Ryanair’s September low cost traffic figures when I heard about Air Berlin’s traffic results. The second largest company of Germany’s results showed a decrease of 5, 1% in compared to last year’s.. On the contrary, easyJet said on Tuesday that the number of passengers it carried in September rose 5.3% from a year earlier to 4.42 million. In fact, the low cost model, especially Ryanair’s, is based on a perpetual growth. I already wrote a post about traffic figures and profitability: two notions that must be looked at carefully. High passenger traffic doesn’t mean profitability. Ryanair’s model, for instance, is greatly dependant on growth because it is the only way for the company to survive. All its contracts, signed with public local authorities, require Ryanair to bring in more and more passengers. If the company can’t manage to bring in passengers, it doesn’t receive its subsidies. Without its subsidies, Ryanair wouldn’t last six months. Moreover, it is clear that Ryanair is discounting massively in order to fill up its rapidly growing fleet and network. In the past fortnight alone, the LCC launched a widespread EUR1fare sale, covering 1 million seats for travel from September through to November. EasyJet and Ryanair only communicate on their passenger growth however, they do not publish yield data, and this is why it’s impossible to assess their profitability.

Air Berlin’s passenger traffic passenger has been decreasing for the past several months. In March, the number of passengers decreased by 5.6 percent to 2,053,960 passengers. In May, the number of passengers transported was 7.7 percent lower than in the corresponding month of the previous year. In July, the number of passengers declined by 3.3 percent. Air Berlin actually decided to reduce its fleet capacity by 5%, which explains why the company is loosing passengers every month. The economic downturn however is also to blame. At the same time Air Berlin has been able to improve its seat yield significantly. In March, its revenue per available seat was 5.45 Eurocents. It is now at 6.22 Eurocents. We can therefore cleary see that Air Berlin has adopted a strategy opposite to that of Ryanair. I think that Air Berlin’s model is closer to that of easyJet. In fact, Air Berlin also flies to main airports and provides complimentary services that Ryanair, for instance, charges for.

Like Stelios said, easyJet’s model is “more resilient, safer and lower risk” than Ryanair’s. In the first quarter that ended June 30th, Ryanair’s yield slumped 13%, as the carrier grew traffic by 11%. The carrier conceded that traffic growth “is strong, but at much weaker yields due to the recession and the impact of tourist tax in Ireland and the UK”.

I think this kind of growth strategy is ultimately dangerous because it creates artificial demand, I’m much more confident in the easyJet model, which looks at real demand and then flies from A to B in answer to demand. I think O’Leary knows that Ryanair won’t be able to handle such discounts that is why he recently declared “we’ll change our strategy, stop growing the business and maximise cash for our shareholders.”

A replacement plane reached Sharm el Sheikh with a delay of 8 hours.
Air Berlin – parent company of Belair – reported, that the EEC had to be replaced. The passengers in Basel and those waiting for the return flight from Sharm el Sheikh were accomodated in day time hotel rooms.

It’s always interesting to see which low cost company’s profile is most checked. Even if it doesn’t provide any positive or negative value, it does however, testify to blog trends in airline popularity.

.

In an effort to track and monitor these trends, I’ll update this with data twice a month thanks to the Nielsen buzz metric and cover most LCCs from Ryanair, easyJet and Air Berlin, to Vueling, Flybe and Wizzair

Without surprise for this post, it’s Ryanair that takes the crown.

The buzz created is clearly due to the company’s announcement about of the recent introduction of smokeless cigarettes. Another popularity pak appears, around the 5th of the month, surely due to the fact that Ryanair decided to increase bag check-in fees by 50%.

EasyJet is the second most covered low cost carriers in blogs. easyJet’s peak in popularity is related to the anouncement of its results and the recent decision to axe flights out of the UK, especially Luton Airport.

In regards to Air Berlin, we can observe a good peak at the beginning of the month. Results show that it’s related to strikes at LTU, an Air Berlin subsidiary company.
