Michelle Obama Takes Girls to London for Fish and Chips

A Boeing 757 and a fleet of armored cars for Michelle’s sightseeing tour!

On Sunday, President Obama flew back to the United States on Air Force One. His wife, two daughters and her mother did a bit of shopping in Paris before taking their own Boeing 757 (C-32) over to London to do some sightseeing. We all remember Obama’s admonishment to corporate CEOs in February:

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime.”

Apparently that doesn’t apply to his wife.

The London Times opened its description of Michelle’s visit this way:

Motorcycle outriders, armoured Chevrolets and bullet-headed men in raincoats criss-crossed London yesterday as Michelle Obama and her daughters spent a second day on an unofficial visit to the capital.

The Times went on to describe that when Michelle and the girls arrived at Westminster Abbey, the building was closed to tourists with people already in told to “wait against the wall.” An American visiting the Abbey said “Right then I knew it was probably someone from our ‘royal family’.”

Michelle’s motorcade shut down the  London street above as the First Lady of the World and her children go for Fish and Chips at a pub in  Mayfair . The entourage inside the restaurant was 15 people while dozens more wait outside. Include the dozens of Air Force personnel to fly and service the plane, embassy personnel and other staff and we are talking about a serious expenditure of taxpayer dollars.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and won’t be able to take their family on a summer holiday. Despite their circumstances they’ll still be expected to fork over the tax dollars to pay for Michelle’s trip!

French president Nicolas Sarkozy an Airbus A330-200 dubbed “Air Sarko One”, was approved earlier this month in a low key vote. Reserved for use by Sarkozy and his entourage, the A330 has been bought second-hand from the Air Caraibes airline and is undergoing a multimillion-pound renovation.

While still not quite on the scale of Air Force One 747-200B, when finished the 60 metres (190ft) long and 17 metres high A330,  is expected to have a private wing for the head of state, complete with office, bedroom and bathroom, a meeting room for his staff, and seats for 60 people.  The A330-200 was developed to compete with the Boeing 767-300ER.  Power is provided by two General Electric CF6-80E, Pratt & Whitney PW4000 or Rolls-Royce Trent 700 gas turbine engines. It will also have an encrypted communications system to enable the president to discuss confidential matters with his advisers.

Okay, Harrison Ford is 63 and they are still talking about doing another Indiana Jones film. His last film, 2003’s “Hollywood Homicide” was probably the worst film of his career and it has taken him three long years to headline another film.

If you really think about it, it has been six years since Ford has done anything really interesting and that probably was 2000’s “What Lies Beneath” which was quite a good little thriller. And before that was probably 1997’s “Air Force One” which was the last time Ford has done an action film.

The plot for Harrison Ford’s latest film, “Firewall”, loosely revolves around a techno-suave bank robber (Paul Bettany) who breaks into a bank manager’s house and holds his family hostage until the manager digitally removes $100 million dollars from the bank’s richest clients.

Ford plays the manager and Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen plays his wife. Some of the key supporting players include Robert Patrick, Robert Forster and Alan Arkin.

From start to finish this film feels like a lot of other movies. The home invasion tactic, the likeable but evil villain, the stalwart hero, the ultra-slick computer gimmickry are all part of what makes this film another run-of-the-mill modern thriller.

Some of the sequences in this film reminded me of the 2004 Robert Redford film, “The Clearing” especially the conflict between Bettany and Ford.

I liked the performances of Ford and Bettany but really never felt anything for any of the supporting cast. Because this dynamic never flourished it is hard to say if this thriller succeeded in what it was trying to do.

There have been so many ransom films over the years that “Firewall” just falls among them. It isn’t any worse, good as or better than any of those films. It is just one of them and it is good for what it is.

It is a by-the-book thriller but it sure is nice seeing Ford back to his old tricks as the hero and having a couple nice action scenes even if he’s 63.

So Says the Soothsayer.

The whole first part of this month has been dominated by NaNoWriMo, otherwise known as National Novel Writing Month, in which people try to write a 50,000 word novel in November.  I signed up for and am participating in it.  I don’t really know why.  I’m writing (in novel form) the second draft of a story I’m going to make a movie out of eventually.  I have 8,104 words currently.  At the end of to-day, I hope to have 10,000.  I should technically have 11,667, but I took one day off for government homework.  I’m hoping to make up for that over the weekend.  It’s been fun I guess.  If trying to come up with solutions for plot holes and character dialogue and such can be considered fun.  I also have two bandaged fingers, which makes it somewhat difficult to type.  It also makes it difficult to play guitar.  So, that’s not good.  Both of my fingers have been afflicted with hang-nails, which I, in my boredom, picked off, which led to bleeding on one and stinging due to exposed skin under the epidermis on the other.  Oh boy.

Movie and album this week:  I finished watching Firewall a few minutes ago.  I watched a different movie starring Harrison Ford last week – Air Force One.  Those are suspenseful films.  They’re good though.  I doubt that I could think of anything that complicated.  I suppose if you thought of something it would seem more complicated to people not directly involved with it though.  That is to say that it’s easier to comprehend something if you yourself had a part to play in it. 

My album is the Best of Sam Cooke.  I got it on 13 March.  I’m really behind on listening to my new CDs.  That’s why I started this project in the first place though.  Curiously enough, this one doesn’t have “Another Saturday Night” on it.   That’s kind of disappointing….  It has “Summertime” though.  I’m sure there are some other good tracks on it too.  It takes me two or three listens of an album to get a good feel for it.  I know “Another Saturday Night” from radio play, and I’m quite familiar with the Zombies’ version of “Summertime”.  I’m finishing listening to a Chicago album first.  I’ve been listening almost exclusively to the Zombies for the past few days, so I need a musical break.  I listened to Five Man Electrical Band last night.  At school, I got “Running on Empty” (by Jackson Browne) stuck in my head, so I’ve listened to that a few times in the past day or two as well.

Enough about music.

I think that’s all I have though: NaNoWriMo and music.  Finals week is next week, but that’s not very interesting.  It does add difficulty with NaNoWriMo though (rhyme!).  I’m determined to finish.  Even if I don’t finish in the accepted time limit, I will finish the novel to the point of 50,000 words. 

Yester-day, I came to the realisation that I’ve achieved a 100% or higher on every French class quiz I’ve had thus far this year.  That’s like six or seven of them. 

Reviewing my notes (yes, I make notes about what I wish to blog), I’ve found something else.  On Wednesday, I told myself to talk about the phenomenon of how grammar is sometimes eliminated in songs, either to make the flow better or just to sound better.  I have two examples off-hand, and one isn’t the most familiar song.

In “Sister Golden Hair” by America: “there’s times”.  It should be “there are times” to be grammatically correct, but this adds a syllable.  Also, I believe that ’s’s (the letter s, plural) are added to songs because it makes them sound better.  Like the liaison in French.  This is also the case with the second example.  The Easybeats’ “I’ll Make You Happy” includes the line “does his lips”.  It should be “do his lips” to have agreement with the subject and verb, but the s adds something.  I might even Venture to say (musical pun!) that ’s’ is the most used letter in song lyrics, as opposed to ‘e’ in everything else. 

I suppose I can add a little bit about my art class painting.  I’d decided to paint a picture of a marble with the Monopoly Top Hat on it.  I had this idea in picture form on the 10 of July.  I took that picture and am now painting it.  Not the picture itself, but I’m painting the picture onto a canvas.  A canvas I stretched myself.  It was the first time I’d ever used a staple gun.  It was a bit difficult, but fun once I understood how to use it.  I finished the hard parts this last week.  Now all I have to do is the background (which is one solid colour).  I don’t like having to mix colours because I can never seem to get them consistent.  If it doesn’t turn out too badly, I might post a picture of it.  I’ll get it back before Thanksgiving at least.  The trimester ends next Friday (the 13th).  Wow, I didn’t even realise it was a Friday the Thirteenth.  Huh…

Well, I’m off to work on NaNoWriMo.  Last time I left my main character, he was in a hospital bed recovering from severe arm lacerations after having escaped from a glass tube.

But George Bush was criticized for spending minutes in a classroom, trying not to panic children and others present, while he digested the horrific news of the 9/11 attack.

There is no comparison between the events. And if anyone thinks that I’m making that comparison, they need to take a reading comprehension class.

This is about the lack of human emotions in the face of tragedy – period. Any tragedy. Have you seen any true emotion come from TheOne?

He wastes time on “shout-outs” while heros at Ft. Hood are dying or caring for those who are dying or injured. He allows a “life imitates horror” fly-over of Manhattan with Air Force One and terrorizes tens of thousands of New Yorkers.

The callousness and emotionless behavior of this man is stupefying.  And it’s becoming predictable.

Golfing almost every single weekend – about 6 times more in 9 months than Bush did in 4 years  but not giving his wartime General more than 30 minutes  face time in those 9 months, while our soldiers are in harm’s way – can’t be called anything but callous.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat his wife to “date night” in New York, while millions of Americans – many of whom voted for him – go unemployed or under employed and sit home with popcorn and a rented DVD – if they’re lucky.

He was willing to step in and “jump to conclusions” regarding Sgt. Crowley and the Cambridge police “acting stupidly,”  but he’s unwilling to call this massacre at Ft. Hood what it is  – a terrorist attack! He cautions US to be prudent and not make assumptions while he has done the exact same things.

When has he spoken from the heart about the brutal murder of honor student Darrion Albert, on the streets of TheOne’s adopted hometown?

He has time to make the rounds of every late night talk show and Sunday network news show (sans Fox News) but can’t give even more than a total of 20 hours on the wars that our brave soldiers are fighting and dying in.

The examples go on and on and I’m sure that many others can add to this. And all of this in less than a year in the oval office. Oops… he’s not spent that time in the office but at least as president.

What do they call someone who has no emotion but can only mirror the emotions of those around him? Someone who can only absorb the humanness from others, that he, himself lacks? Someone who believes and has made others believe that we ALL serve him? Someone who has done nothing to dispell his grandiose, messiah image being promoted all over our culture, most importantly in our schools?

There is a clinical name for that kind of person.

I’ll leave it at that.

If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the nonexistent “Austrian language,” would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current on their income taxes, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to “Cinco de Cuatro” in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the fourth of May (Cuatro de Mayo), and continued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

If George W. Bush had misspelled the word advice would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as “proof” of what a dunce he is?

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on “Earth Day”, would you have concluded he’s a hypocrite?

If George W. Bush’s administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually “get” what happened on 9-11?

If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again 10 times within years, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan’s holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved ?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can’t think of anything? Don’t worry. He’s done all the above in just 7 months — so be patient — you’ve still got three years and five months to come up with an answer.

One of the convenient parts about movies is that they allow stuff to happen that otherwise couldn’t be done in real life.  Very rarely do we ever get a film that feels like it’s abiding by what could or would actually occur but this is part of why certain films are fun to watch (they help you take your mind out of reality for some fun).  However, there are certain scenes that push the idea of plausibility to the point that it’s either just plain silly or simply annoying.  So I’m here to give you ten of the most implausible movie scenes that I’ve ever come across.

10. That’s One Fast Train and Signal-The Fast and the Furious

It’s not like The Fast and the Furious had realism on its side in the first place.  Just about anyone who knows cars well enough should know that an Eclipse with $10,000 worth of upgrades shouldn’t be able to clear a quarter mile in 10 seconds (even with NOS).  However, one scene that I recently noted as being particularly odd is at the end when Paul Walker and Vin Diesel are racing head-to-head in a Supra and Charger, respectively.  However, after they’ve already started racing for the finish line (aka the train tracks) we see that the signal goes down and they narrowly avoid getting crashed (well, one of them does).  But since these are supposed to be ten second cars, that means the train which they just narrowly avoided came within less than 10 seconds with no warning until after they headed off.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t recall the last time a train signal was that slow or a train came that abruptly.

9. No One Sees the Monster-Cloverfield

It’s pretty tough to find little details in Cloverfield since for just about all of the action scenes the camera is shaking around like crazy but it is possible to find little pieces.  And perhaps the most abrupt part of the film is it’s ending, which you need to look in the background to see why they picked it.  Essentially we can see what’s supposedly the monster falling from the sky and into the ocean.  Yet if the bulk of the film itself is of any indication, apparently no one saw the monster go into the ocean.  This is very unlikely since the film takes place in a present setting so there obviously must have been reports of the monster.  Additionally, I find it very unlikely that not a single person who could do or say anything didn’t see the monster crash into the water.  While it can be argued that we don’t see or hear enough in the film itself to confirm this, until we get more background with a follow-up it’s still highly improbable.

8. Burt Is Alive!-Tremors 3: Back to Perfection

Tremors are definitely one of the series of films that you take your mind out of and can easily enjoy.  While the films are genuinely fun and great watches (the first two anyways), there is a scene in the third installment that’s just, well, ridiculous.  Fans of the series can instantly identify the one constant character: Burt Gummer.  There’s one scene in the film where the most infamous creature of the series (graboid) gets and eats him…only somehow he’s still alive inside the monster and is able to clearly communicate to someone simultaneously.  While we have heard a character or two in previous installments scream while being dragged into the ground, Burt, on the other hand, is inside the graboid and comes out without seeming all that affected.  Similar could also be said about how Tommy Lee Jones from Men in Black is able to survive as long as he does inside an alien but since Burt manages to multitask while inside and manage to break clearly, this gets the edge.

7. The Bus Jump-Speed

This scene is what actually gave me the inspiration to do a list of implausible movie scenes.  And of course the one scene that I can never be convinced of is the fifty foot jump across an unfinished bridge.  While Keanu Reeves says there might be an incline and we do see one for the shot the bus apparently lifts, we clearly see in other shots that there’s no such incline on either side of the bridge.  There’s also the bus landing which is less convincing if anything.  For the shot we see of the bus landing on the other side it looks like it’s coming down smoothly from a high area.  And of course they manage to keep it going over 50 MPH even with the landing the bus likely hitting no higher than 80 MPH when hitting the jump.  The film is a fun watch, but some of the scenes take me out too much.  This is the big one.

6. The Sharp Landing Turn-Air Force One

Here’s another film that tests its realism in a number of scenes but for the most part these aren’t to the point that Speed hits.  Yet one scene that I always say “they’d be so dead right there” is after the plane lands during the Russian takeover scene.  There’s a part where we see the plane take a rather abrupt and sharp turn that causes the left side to come very close to the ground.  This is where my belief ran out the window.  A plane such as Air Force One has to weigh several tons and making a turn as nasty as that would definitely make the left wing/engines scrap the ground from the weight transfer and cause a nasty incident (to say the least).  Wolfgang Peterson’s a great director and I love him for bringing us Das Boot, but that scene can never convince me.

To-day’s Halloween.  I kind of have indifferent feelings toward Halloween.  I don’t really like it, but I think that’s because I never had a good Halloween experience.  When I was a kid, it seemed everything about Halloween was rushed, just so that I would have a lot of experiences.  I guess trying to get me to have many experiences worked oppositely, so instead of liking those experiences, I didn’t like them.  Or something like that.  So, while I”m not the kind of person to dress up and go get candy, I can appreciate those that do.

I just finished watching “Air Force One”, my movie for this Saturday.  I think this is only the third time I’ve seen it.  I think that’s the extent of my scariness for this Halloween.  Hostage situations.  Oh boy.  It’s ironic that this is the film I watched this weekend, since we talked about the actual aeroplane Air Force One in government class this week.

Having watched that, I started listening to my album this week.  An album which could be called the antithesis of Halloween: The Very Best of Herman’s Hermits.  Sunshin-y pop/rock music doesn’t fit well with spooky-type holdiays. 

Last Sunday, the 25th, was my first anniversary, per se, of having my guitar.  I bought (well, $40 of it) on 25 October 2008.  It was a Saturday that year.  I don’t quite know why I feel it pertinent to say that.  Perhaps because it can lead into my next subject

One Object 265 Days Project.  My sister suggested this to me, after having started it herself.  It’s basically a photography/creativity challenge, supposedly also a memory challenge, to take a picture of one object for 365 days.  It started on flickr apparently, but it could be done anywhere with whatever tools.  In fact, I’ve been doing this for over a year anyway, not knowing it.  I’ve taken a picture of myself ever since 06/07/08.  The idea was original to me, yet it’s been done by many people for many years.  For my One Object 365 Days Project, I’ve decided to take a picture of one of my LEGO minifigures for a whole year, starting on 25 October with a picture of him on my guitar.  I’ve named him Powerman after the Kinks’ song.  Later, after I named him, I realised that the Powerman of the song is actually a bad guy.  Whoops.  It depends on your power I guess…  More details there-on. 

To-morrow, I get to start NaNoWriMo, another thing that my sister suggested to me.  The goal of this is to write a 50,000 word novel in November.  (1,667 words a day)  My story is kind of like the late 1990s show The Pretender.  I’m going to have the government adopt a kid from an orphanage or something and place him in a school, so that they can fill his head with all sorts of knowledge in order to later use him as a ‘human computer’ if the country ever needs something as such.  I figure it would be useful in terms of politics, war, hostage situations!, and the like. 

Along with those two projects, I’m still taking a picture of myself everyday, as well as drawing a Static Mountain everyday at lunch.  I’ve also started writing a short story in which every sentence has a pair of homophones.  I just had the wild idea  to do that once, so I figure: Why not now?  I could probably think of many-a reason not to, but that’s the fun of it: to try to get past all of those reasons.

So there’s your fun update on my week, especially on all of the crazy weekly or daily projects that I’m doing.

Okay, I wasn’t gonna throw anything out there until I finished research for my next population piece but what’s the deal with the president using my money to go out  and campaign for partisan political candidates. How much does it fricken cost to fly him around for this crap anyway? It cost 500k just for Air Force One’s photo op. –and no, I don’t care if other presidents have done it in the past–those days are gone.

I want to know that the Democratic Party paid for this or I’m not paying any more taxes—I’VE HAD IT!
