Whatever happened to this marvelous game? Why hasn’t SEGA gone forward with the development of a sequel to this game? I love Jet Set Radio, it is one of the most original experiences in a game. It’s full of stylized graphics and a very original premise . If you haven’t played the game, you definitely try to get it for XBox.

I first saw the game when it was going to come out for the Dreamcast, I fell in love with it from the moment I saw it on the magazine pages. Back then I was heavily into importing games and I have always had an obsession with “odd” games, so I obviously imported Jet Set Radio the moment in came out. I paid $60 for it and have never regretted the purchase. Recently, I started playing Jet Set Radio Future again on the 360, and I was a little ticked off by the fact that the emulation for this game was so terribly done.

The original feel of the game is one of smooth animations with lots of detail to be seen as you skate your way through massive environments. The cell shading style of the game came life, better than before, once it was released on the XBox. Colors are crisp lines are smooth and the frame rate, used to be, steady and up to par with what was going on onscreen. The XBox 360 fails miserably at playing the game at a constant frame rate and it’s just not acceptable, the 360 is supposed to be double the power of its predecessor! Yes, the game does have some what of a cult following but it shouldn’t have to runs so shitty. Microsoft should at LEAST make sure that all XBox games runs smoothly.

SEGA earlier this year was reported to have renewed the patent on the Jet Set Radio name and then there was talks of a new installment being developed for the Wii, however, nothing else has happened since. And all that was around January of this year. ITS NOT TOO LATE SEGA! I really hope SEGA does go through with a Wii version, not a port, of this marvelous game. We need more original games like Jet Set Radio, especially now that the majority of games are nothing but action oriented travesties. Very few games out there now can stand on their own, most are just variations of a working formula. Case in point, open world/sandbox games like Gran Theft Auto. But even following those parameters, Jet Set Radio fits perfectly. It’s an open world where you can skate around, spray some tags in around the city and fight the evil forces of the Rokkaku PD.

IF– yes caps are intentional– SEGA does make a remake, please bring back the tag mechanics of the original Jet Set Radio. On the XBox version, Jet Set Radio Future, the tagging was made simple… too simple. On the Dreamcast you had to follow some simple gestures with the thumb-stick for the graffiti to be executed, but on the XBox you just went up to the target surface and just hit the left trigger. Not so fun. I really don’t care what console the game is developed for, I would just like to see it resurface again with all the refinements that you get if you take JSR + JSRF, which would equal Jet Set Radio AWESOME!

Di recente, parlando con uno dei miei colleghi e amici universitari, ho scoperto questo manga creato dal produttivo mangaka giapponese “Oh! great” (Ito Ōgure per gli amici), di cui avevo già adocchiato “Inferno e Paradiso” (di cui magari vi parlerò in diversa sede). Questo che segue è un mio parere, strettamente personale, dei primi cinque volumi del manga e contiene SPOILER, quindi chi non ha ancora letto questo manga e vuole ancora goderselo, NON prosegua oltre. Per tutti gli altri ci vediamo, come di consueto, tra qualche paragrafo, dopo la scheda di rito e le immagini delle copertine.

Air Gear è un manga che parla, fondamentalmente, di Itzuki “Ikki” Minami, un bulletto delle scuole medie, che vive la sua vita all’insegna del wrestling, in un ambiente di studenti “sfigati” che non fanno altro che picchiarsi, mattina e sera. E’ il classico BabyFace giapponese, si sente geniale, ha la sua gang, e viene di continuo sfidato da membri di altri clan per fare a botte. Il manga fa, prima di questo, una breve introduzione sul mondo in cui ci troviamo; è un giappone in cui i classici pattini “Inliner” sono stati sostituiti da modelli di pattini a rotelle con un motore nelle ruote, che permette loro di raggiungere velocità incredibili e ai loro proprietari la capacità di fare trick spericolatissimi. Esistono diverse squadre che lottano tra loro su chi è il migliore “Air Trecker” partecipando a sfide, scommettendo parti, accessori o gli emblemi delle squadre (su questo torno più in là) su un sito chiamato “Parts War”. Ogni squadra ha un rango (che va da F ad A, fino all’ambitissima Special) e le varie lotte che le squadre si danno vengono definite in base alla loro classe di appartenenza (si va da un parkour, a uno slalom, fino a gare molto più difficili del tipo “acchiappa un oggetto lanciato in aria prima del team avversario” oppure “cattura quella rondine che sta volando sui cieli della città”).

Bene, all’inizio del manga, il nostro eroe non è a conoscenza di nulla di tutto questo e semplicemente è attratto da una ragazza che lui vede fare regolarmente Air Treck (AT) vicino il luogo in cui coabita con quattro ragazze, sorelle tra loro, tali Ume, Ringo, Mikan e Rica. Durante una delle sue lotte da “street wrestler” viene battuto da un gruppo di ATer conosciuto come gli Skull Saders, e tornato a casa scopre delle AT a casa delle sorelle. Così inizia il suo viaggio nel mondo degli Air Gear, del quale presto scoprirà le regole ed il fascino, volando per la prima volta sulla “Wing Road”, la Strada delle Ali.

Così facendo, viene inoltre in stretto contatto con la ragazza che da tempo osserva, tale Simca, facente parte di un proprio team di ATer, che vede in lui grosse potenzialità. Anche le quattro sorelle con cui coabita, si scopre – ma non lo scopre Ikki! – , fanno parte di un gruppo molto famoso e di alto calibro del forum Parts War, che si tiene tuttavia nascosto agli occhi dei più, chiamato Sleeping Forest, e molto presto Ikki si ritrova a dover sfidare team di Rider delle sue zone (fondamentalmente i territori intorno alla scuola, ma non solo) per guadagnarsi onore e fama, nonchè il diritto di crearsi un proprio team. Tale team nasce dopo che Kazu e Onigiri (i due inseparabili amici di Ikki) scoprono che nella scuola che frequentano c’è già un team di Riders capeggiato dal gigantesco Buccha, che Ikki sfida e batte, deprivandolo del suo emblema.

L’emblema, ecco la spiegazione che vi promisi prima, è un pò come l’anima di una squadra, viene fabbricato in un unica versione, e perdutolo in una sfida (o altro modo), la squadra è costretta a sciogliersi. Ikki depriva del loro stemma sia gli Skull Saders che la squadra di Buccha, i Re della Notte, che devono quindi cessare di esistere. Buccha, presto, farà parte del Team di Ikki e si unirà con lui alla lotta, insieme a Kazu, Onigiri e la particolare figura di Agito/Akito, un ragazzino dalla duplice personalità, l’una fredda e assassina, l’altra dolce e strappacuori (nonchè strappa baci ).

Il manga, fino al numero 5, si evolve in modo piuttosto prevedibile, con ogni sfida del team prontamente vinta con un espediente o un altro (per esempio, in una sfida, Akito, di rango assai superiore agli altri poichè prima facente parte di un altro team, si rifiuta di gareggiare ed interviene Ringo della Sleeping Forest, camuffata da “Nuotatrice Mascherata” =P, per non far capire agli astanti che fa parte del proprio team segreto) e con Ikki che, da nulla saccente diviene un fortunato (o talentuoso) Team Leader di un gruppo di Rider davvero variopinto. La trama è raccontata con la caotica confusione ordinata tipica delle storie di Oh! great lette da me fino ad ora, e seppure a tratti fuorviante, si comprende il come ed il perchè dell’avanzare della storia che, fino ad ora, non pare forzato in alcun modo, e prosegue quindi liscio e credibile. Il setting è molto suggestivo e l’universo degli ATers è creato in modo convincente e coinvolgente (anche se piuttosto stereotipato). Per quanto i primi numeri possano essere magari disorientanti, a tratti poichè vengono introdotti molti personaggi in poche ventine di pagine, in altri frangenti invece vengono spiegati molti concetti in modo non sempre sufficientemente meticoloso; dopo un pò l’universo, comunque, inizia a venire fuori a pennellate sempre più distinte, e ci si ritrova a voler andare avanti nella lettura. I testi sono tradotti sufficientemente bene da risultare nella gran parte dei casi chiari e comprensibili, nelle prime storie ci sono troppi riferimenti al wrestling (di cui io, per scelta, so poco e nulla: è un modo di fare show che non mi piace), ma non capire una mossa di Ikki & Co. non preclude il potersi gustare il resto del manga. I disegni e lo stile sono molto ricchi di dettaglio e la regia delle inquadrature rasenta l’impeccabile, fan service a parte (non fanno male a nessuno, ma a volte sono sterili e fine a se stessi – es. le sorelle che si fanno la doccia insieme e commentano le proprie taglie di seno, ma dai!).

Unico malus, dovuto non a Oh! great ma alla Planet Manga, è la rilegatura; troppo piccola per i miei gusti (meglio il formato della riedizione di Inferno & Paradiso, per intenderci) e dopo poche letture il manga cade, letteralmente, a pezzi!

I personaggi del manga, per il momento, sono molto classici e stereotipati, così come lo sono le situazioni. C’è il classico ragazzo che vive con delle donne che lo maltrattano, in questo caso ben quattro, di cui una è la classica bimba-genietto nipponica (Ume), un’altra è la leader delle palate a discapito di Ikki (Mikan), la terza è la più grande e funge da “mamma” (Rica) e l’ultima è sperdutamente innamorata di Ikki (Ringo), ovviamente quest’ultimo non se ne rende minimamente conto. Lui invece stravede per la ragazza misteriosa di turno (che nonostante le pochissime apparizioni, è, a mio giudizio, il personaggio meglio riuscito dei primi cinque numeri), Simca, che indubbiamente svolgerà un ruolo importante più avanti nella saga.

Ikki è un personaggio molto plasmabile e, pertanto, privo di un vero carattere, e la sua unica vera motivazione nella vita pare essere “il più bravo” in un campo, che fosse il bullismo a scuola o le gare di AT. Pare che vada matto per la Wing Road che intravede in uno dei primi numeri del manga, ma a parte fungere da motivazione in momenti di difficoltà, di questo concetto si è capito ben poco. In generale, il concetto delle “Strade” (ne esistono varie – Flame Road, Blood Road, etc..) ancora non mi è ben chiaro e risulta blando, per ora. A Ikki si affianca un Corvo, che non si è ancora capito che valenza abbia nel manga, a parte quello di fungere da Pikachu della situazione (è lì, sta col protagonista, ma non fa nulla…okay, è meglio di pikachu, quello purtroppo c’era e rompeva le palle =P).

Kazu e Onigiri sono i comprimari del protagonista del manga e, per ora, non hanno fatto che stare nell’ombra di Ikki, eccezion fatta per Kazu, che guadagna punti simpatia proprio nel numero 5 di Air Gear, con una performance favolosa in una sfida per il territorio della scuola, dimostrandosi un rider dalla velocità incredibile. Vado matto per i personaggi veloci! =)

Buccha inizialmente mi stava antipatico ed era reso in modo irrealistico, un personaggio con una mole spropositata e nonostante ciò incredibilente agile. Lui e Onigiri combattono, per ora, per il trono di comprimario più debole della vicenda.

Agito/Akito è un personaggio curioso, introdotto solo di recente, che ha grandi potenzialità, che per ora, però, rimangono non sfruttate. L’idea della doppia personalità è abusato, ma raramente l’ho visto accennato in questa maniera particolare come in lui e portrebbe dare grandi risultati nel futuro. Ringo, Mikan, Ume e gran parte delle restanti comparse femminili sono piatte come una tavola da ping pong nuova di fabbrica.

Un pollice su va dato ad alcuni personaggi che sono Team Leader delle loro squadre, che presentano una buona caratterizzazione per quelle poche tavole in cui appaiono. Voglio ricordare quindi il leader dei Mad Dogz e la leader dei Sabel Tiger, incrocio le dita affinchè ricompaiano.

Passiamo agli awards!

Caotico
	Oh! great ha una tecnica secondo me dubbia di disegno. Non metto in forse la sua bravura artistica, non sarà il miglior mangaka che conosco (non ne conosco neanche moltissimi), ma poco ci manca. Il problema è che a tratti seguire il filo logico delle sue vignette è arduo; di solito si parte dall’alta destra per arrivare alla bassa sinistra, ma ci sono vignette in cui questo ordine non è sempre facile da seguire, o per via di vignette posta l’una nell’altra, o per via di nuvolette che trascendono le tavole. Alcune tavole poi, in particolare quelle che si dispiegano su due pagine di fumetto, sono davvero incomprensibili. Peccato, perchè l’altra metà delle vignette si lasciano seguire con scioltezza e sono anche ben realizzate.

Caotico

Il mio giudizio sui primi numeri di Air Gear è quindi misto. Da un lato, ci sono disegni e inquadrature davvero coinvolgenti, ben fatti nei loro particolari, che riescono a catturare bene il momentum delle scene e che coinvolgono il lettore. Dall’altro c’è la pessima edizione italiana che ne mina i pieni voti e una certa vena caotica di tanto in tanto. Da un lato c’è un universo coinvolgente e strutturato fin nei minimi dettagli, una trama che per il momento si riesce a distinguere dalla discrezione di molte altre pubblicazioni giapponesi e un idea di fondo niente male. Controparte di questo sono dei personaggi di cui fin’ora si riesce a elevare solo una (Simca), e a fatica; gli altri, per lo meno nei primi cinque numeri, rimangono piatti (Ringo & Co.), anonimi (Kazu, Onigiri), insfruttati (Agito/Akito, Rica, che alla fine del 5 numero acquisisce finalmente un minimo di personalità) o, nel peggiore dei casi, antipatici (Buccha). Non ho assegnato un award per stereoptipi solo perchè do al manga un paio di numeri in più per permettergli di svilupparsi.

Consigliare Air Gear? Bah, dipende dai gusti… C’è un sacco di carne al fuoco, di cui per ora però si vede solo il fumo. Potrebbe evolversi in un grande spettacolo, o semplicemente evaporare come acqua messa al sole. Per il momento, raggiunge la discrezione, ed è quanto basta.

Photography and Business

Last week was Oni-con in Houston, which was awesome and a much needed break from school. While I was there I was lucky enough to have a photo project, portraits, that could be completed at the con. Long story short, I found some really awesome cosplayers, got 4 really great rolls of film developed and presented probably the best project of my college career so far. With this being such a great success and considering how much I enjoyed both taken and printing all the pictures, I’ve decided to attempt to turn this into a much bigger project and hopefully a small scale business venture. From now on I will try and devote the majority of my con attendance to scheduling photo shoots and selling prints back to the cosplayers. So far with this first run, it seems to very successful, with everyone wanting prints, which has pushed me into attempting this at the next con I attend. I really hope that this will work out for me, make some money doing what I love, where I love to be or at least pay off the cost of the trip there. I haven’t really got anything else hashed out yet, but I plan on doing so soon. Until then, here are pictures (bad scanner /sadface).

Synopsis: In a futuristic modern world, rollerblades reached a whole new level with technology, being now high motor-powered and allowing the user to have an aerial freedom like never before. These supreme rollerblades are called Air Treck, often shortened A.T. However, the freedom A.T provides turns it into not only a sport but also a life’s style where an autonomic realm with rules and hierarchies exist.

Stormriders are the users of A.T, and as they learn and train, each stormrider is enabled to perform their own specialized abilities called Tricks. Due to A.T’s popularity they often group and form a team.
Each team has its emblem, ranking and leader and they compete with each other to raise their ranking, which is often the main goal, but they also can compete to expand their territory or to gain possession of a Regalia (read below), and this may contribute to the first goal aswell.
The rule to raise ranking is 3 victories with teams of the same level or winning a superior team, which will raise it automatically. The challenge system is based on different types of battle:

F-Level: Dash – the simplest of them where the route is decided by the challengers
E-Level: Hurdle – obstacle race
D-Level: Cube – battle 1vs1 in a cubic room
C-Level: Air – 2 team players will be standing on 2 high long poles trying to knock each other off
B-Level: Disk – a frisby team game
A-Level: Ballon – where a ballon with the emblems must be caught

The most skilled stormriders are nominated “Kings” and each King has its special “Road” (the traces and marks each user leaves when skating). It’s known that there are 8 kings and each one of them possesses a Regalia (that’s it’s nothing but an A.T piece that chooses their master) that proves its legitimacy and assures its standing. The most illustrious of them it’s the Sky King.

Ikki is a 14 years old student and deliquent known as “Babyface”, the leader of youth gang “East Side Gunz”. After being humiliated by another gang that uses A.T, “Skull Saders”, Ikki discovers an amazing secret kept by their sisters: they belong to a team of stormriders “Sleeping Forest”. As an admirer of A.T and the secret unveiled, her sisters decide to let him use the A.T to repay to the Skull Saders. Although his reputation is restored, Ikki can’t let go of the A.T’s incomparable sensation.

And so, Ikki gradually falls deeper into the mysterious AT’s underworld.

Appreciation: First, I would like to say I have read a fair deal of the manga, which I’m a fan of, and watched some episodes. Even though by the time I discovered it there was already the anime but I prefered to read the manga first. And I’m very glad I did because it will surely be a important element to analyse the adaptation (and I recommend you always go check the original work first before).

I really like the manga. First, beautiful drawing, shading skills and trace work. Second the futuristic plot concept is mind-blowing, and the manga ambience has that surreal, ethereal feeling. And, neverminding the excessive ecchi moments, the inner feelings of the characters, the heroism, well, the story’s “substance”, helped by the ambience and, evidences its more intellectual side. I love the complexity and engaging environment of action titles. So, yes, it caught me. I can say without a doubt Air Gear is my favourite sport manga. I intend to restart reading it, especially after making this review (lol).

What I can say about the anime? If you’ve read the manga (even though even if you read after) you’ll see the flaws easily.

As I watched the first episode I was not impressed at all. Ikki didn’t gave a strong impression but you can see he’s a nice soul lol … The characters are lovely but it lacks good animation even though you can noticed they used good aspects: slow motion, good perspectives, but I still think it lacked good animation quality. The action scenes weren’t amazing when they should be. That’s one of the problems, when action titles animation plays a lot you should put effort in kick ass animation. It was good when it should be breath-taking, and there goes the impact out of the window. I’m really disappointed with that.

Another aspect that I’ve somehow noticed is that it seems more shallow than the manga, even though there’s not that character centration, there’s a great deal of “deep” in the plot (sigh) Let’s see how it goes.

I quite liked the seiyuus, and I have nothing against the music, it’s very “forward” type and it goes with the anime. I haven’t finished the anime but I’ve seen lots of complains about the ending (oh my). I have hope it will get more interesting as the story develops.

In spite of this, the anime is surely still entertaining and worth to see, although I prefer the manga without question and I highly recommend you to read it. You’ll stick Good for the time being. I’ll try to watch it carefully for a better appreciation, so I’ll probably update this article.

Kogarasumaru (小烏丸?) is a team formed by Minami Itsuki and his friends to further their favourite hobby of Air Treck. Their team ranking in the world of AT increases at a very rapid pace, giving Kogarasumaru worldwide fame. Eventually, the elite team known as Genesis is placed under the command of Kogarasumaru, though the Sora brothers eventually take it over. Kogarasumaru is now determined to win the Gram Scale Tournament and dominate all other teams with their strength alone. The team currently has 3 riders that are kings: Itsuki Minami, Kazuma Mikura, and Agito Wanijima. Of these three, only Agito currently possesses his Regalia, Aeon Clock having stolen the Flame Regalia from Kazuma and Itsuki being the Storm King of the newly formed Hurricane Road, though they now also possess the rumble regalia. Kogarasumaru was unqualified for the Gram Scale tournament because Ikki failed to submit the registration forms on time. However, they had a chance to qualify by going against Inorganic Net, led by the former fang king, Falko. Inorganic Net is actually a computer program developed by Falko that has exact copies of the former Sleeping Forest members before they had disbanded, and each one possesses one of the original 8 regalia. During this battle, Kogarasumaru manages to outwit the former Sleeping Forest, and the victory is granted to Kogarasumaru by Emily’s efforts. After this victory, Kogarasumaru wins their first Gram Scale bout against Highway Circus. While celebrating their victory, Benkei (of the AT syndicate Trident) arrives on a motorcycle, missing her right leg and carrying the Rumble Regalia. Kogarasumaru is currently in battle against a team made up of Wing Road riders.

Ikki va a formar parte de un grupo, y forja su propio “”destino”" para descubrir si es capaz de llevarlo. Este mundo de saltos y giros increibles lo encontraremos en Air Gear.

Entah kenapa tiba-tiba Fukki jadi kepengen insert foto-foto air gear, anime favorit Fukki nih…. liat aja deh ya, bagi yang ga ngerti, gambarnya keren koq… ^^*

Naah, yang ada di atas ini, emblem tim AT legendaris, Sleeping Forest.. Tim ini tuh tim hebat yang misterius, legendanya para Storm Riders yang hebat bisa menghilang di hutannya… (ato begitulah). Anggota Sleeping Forest terbagi menjadi dua golongan, yang lama dan baru. Anggota lamanya itu orang-orang di bawah ini…

Wakh, namanya Fukki nggak tau semua, paling cuma yang baju ijo paling kanan itu.. Dia pemimpin Sleeping Forest generasi pertama, Takeuchi Sora. Dia kenal ama kakaknya Ikki, Rika Noyamano dan meminta Rika yang saat itu seorang Ratu Duri yang terkenal untuk bergabung dengan Sleeping Forest dengan tujuan meraih mimpi (ato cita2) si Sora. Tapi karena sebuah kecelakaan yang masih tidak jelas (nampaknya sebuah pertarungan Parts War), Sora terluka dan harus naik kursi roda, dia tidak bisa lagi naik AT. Setelah kejadian itu emblem Sleeping Forest diserahkan kepada Rika, dan otomatis adik-adiknya, yaitu Mikan, Ringo, dan Shiraume ikut menjadi bagian Sleeping Forest, terbentuklah generasi kedua tim tersebut. Namun Rika sudah berhenti memakai AT karena traumanya terhadap kejadian yang menimpa Sora..

While the school-brawling theme has already lent itself to a large number of manga, the fresh new series Air Gear by Ballantine Books published by Del Ray Yamahachi succeeds in taking the genre to new heights, literally.|High college fighting has always been a popular them in manga but the new series Air Gear has managed to take the theme to a new level.
Air Gear Vol. 1: Oh! Great debuts the story of Koda Kiba, often referred to by his peers as the Babyface of eastside. Being a great fighter, he is encouraged to defend his patch in yearly fight to determine who controls the area. Unfortunately for our protagonist, the loser of the fight does not take kindly to losing and so asks his gangster friends for some payback.
Unfortunately for Itsuki, the Crazy Kats are no ordinary gang. They ambush Yamahachi and knock him out. He ends up scared and alone with his wet trousers The Hippo Killers use their flying roller blades to knock the poor guy into the next dimension. Great.

Plot Summary: Minami “Ikki” Itsuki, is a student and a delinquent.
