All the hype, and all the craziness for today’s release.  It is pretty ridiculous how people craze over a pair of sneakers.

My acquisition of this sought after sneaker release started about 9pm online.  Foot Locker, Champs, and Finish Line websites were being held up due to high traffic volumes.  Foot Locker and Finish Line had splash pages that apologized for not working.   Champs sports actually had a working site but was very slow.  The AJ11 was published on the front page for purchase.  After 2 minutes of entering my information, the check out page froze 5 times.  After the 5th time I received a confirmation number, but no actual bill.  I already had a feeling it didnt go through.

11pm rolled by, I headed out to my local mall where I had signed up on their security list for the 12am release with the mall security 3 days ago.  I was on page 8 of like 15 pages of names.  Luckily this placed me in the middle of the 300+ people that signed up.   40 degrees outside with a windchill waiting for mall security to escort 1 by 1 people to the store to pick up the store.  Out of the 200 pairs expected,  only 140 of them were accounted for in the various sizes.  Fortunately for me, my size is not one of the more popular sizes as 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5 were sold out in a matter of 10 minutes.  Long story short, I made my way up to the door and luckily the security guard called my name for the last pair of the last adult size.  I was escorted with 2 other lucky crazed sneakerheads to pick up the last of the Space Jams for the night.    By the time I got home, it was 2:30 am… 5 hours until work.   Despite all the hype, freezing my ass off, and the price tag of the shoes….it was very exciting and rewarding experience as I had avoided the next morning full of violence, crowds and craze of this Air Jordan re-release.

Interestingly, a scientific study out of Sweden examined a possible genetic explanation for cheaters and determined that the AVPR1A gene might be to blame. The study titled “Genetic variation in the vasopressin receptor 1a gene (AVPR1A) associates with pair-bonding behavior in humans” found that men who had variation 334 in the AVPR1A gene reported more difficulties in their relationships. Carrying two copies of the variant was linked to twice the risk of marital dysfunction. Men with one or no copies of the allele carried less risk. Scientists did not elaborate on whether the same effect was observed in females, but they did say that gene AVPR1A was responsible for the secretion of vasopressin that affects emotional interaction, and it was found that females were not as susceptible to vasopressin fluctuations.

Today, Tyra Banks will examine the alleged phenomenon of “cheating gene” on Tyra Banks Show. On her show, Banks will ask “Are we born to cheat?” The show will feature men who claim they can’t stop cheating because their infidelity is in their genes. “It’s no more complicated than that, though it is so unusual in Washington everyone has to take a magnifying glass to it,” Weaver said after Obama introduced Huntsman in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room.

“He was asked by the president to serve in a major diplomatic post, in a mission with a country most important to our economy, in dealing with Iran, Pakistan and North Korea. Jon is uniquely qualified and thus you don’t turn your nation down,” Weaver said.

Obama said he knew Huntsman’s nomination “wouldn’t be the easiest decision to explain to some members of his party.” But Obama said Huntsman was “the kind of leader who always puts country ahead of party and is always willing to sacrifice on behalf of our nation.”

Elected to his second term in November, Huntsman said he wasn’t looking for a new job and didn’t expect “to be called into action” by McCain’s winning rival.

“But I grew up understanding that the most basic responsibility one has is service to country,” he said, standing with Obama as his family looked on. “When the president of the United States asks you to step up and serve in a capacity like this, that to me is the end of the conversation and the beginning of the obligation to rise to the challenge.”

Fans of Richard Strauss’ operas do not suffer weak singers gladly, which is why productions of his “Salome” and “Elektra” are not as frequently seen as works with less demanding roles. To be heard over this composer’s enormously powerful music is a daunting challenge for singers, particularly sopranos who take on the title roles in these relentlessly grim classics.

The Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Elektra” — in a very short schedule of performances — has two major roles for sopranos and they are being admirably filled by Britain’s Susan Bullock, a veteran of 50 performances in the title role, and Met regular Deborah Voigt, as Elektra’s sister, Chrysothemis.

Whether one sees this interpretation of the Greek legend as a reflection of Shakespeare’s revenge-motivated “Hamlet,” or something brewed up by a devotee of Freud, there’s little question that it is a psychodrama and at the beginning of the 20th century was quite a bold and shocking work.

Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote the libretto based on his own play about the vengeful repercussions of the murder of King Agamennon by his wife Klytamnestra and her lover Aegisth.

The opera, sung in German, is a taunt hour and 45 minutes with no intermission. It opens with a powerful introduction by the orchestra and ends on a wildly triumphant note after the tragedy has run its course.

Italian conductor Fabio Luisi was at the orchestra’s helm and he led the enlarged number of musicians in the pit with a bravura touch. Strauss lovers will be pleased.

Bullock, the British soprano who makes her Metropolitan debut in this production, sings with a savage clarity that rises above the orchestra. She is also a capable actress and conveys the increasing madness of her character with sure strokes.

Voigt, in the role of Chrysothemis, is clearly a singer of the same caliber as Bullock and while her character is more sympathetic, she nevertheless commands her side of the stage.

The production by Otto Schenk, with stark sets by Jurgen Rose, who also contributed the apt costumes, is a nightmarish affair that reaches a bloody climax with several murders and the death of Elektra in a fit of hysteria.

The stage represents the outside of the palace with the giant stature of a horse lying on its side — the Trojan War, remember?

Felicity Palmer’s Klytamnestra is a pitiful creature, tortured by dreams of the deed she has committed, and physically weakened by drugs and lack of sleep. She begs her daughter to help her: “There are rites,” she says. “There must be proper rites for everything … I will find out whose blood must flow so that I can sleep again.” But when Elektra screams that it is her blood that is to be spilled, the queen knows that vengeance is at hand.

Evgeny Nikitin was in good voice as Orest, Electra’s brother, who ultimately becomes his father’s avenger, and Wolfgang Schmidt was properly odious as Aegisth.

Strauss, like Wagner, is an acquired taste for newcomers to the opera. “Elektra” envelopes the listener in such a near smothering cloak of passion that it’s hard to resist.

When lighted torches move about inside the palace and screams are heard to the accompaniment of the musically tense score, this is musical drama at its peak.

Schumacher, 41, revealed on Wednesday that he only began talking to Brawn at the end of November. Button’s McLaren deal was announced in the middle of that month.

The number of case of children being abducted from the US and taken abroad has increased dramatically since 2007, according to the latest data available from the US State Department’s Compliance Reports on the Hague Convention on international child abduction. More than 1,000 new cases involving 1,615 children abducted from the US by a parent were reported in FY 2008, compared with a little over 500 cases involving 821 children in FY 2007.

Abductions from other countries also rose, with almost 500 children reported abducted from foreign countries and brought to the US last year. Divorce lawyers in cities such as New York and London are also noting an upswing in international clientele.

One reason “international child abductions are on the rise is that it is fairly easy to accomplish in the United States,” says Chris Schmidt of the US law firm of Bryan Cave LLP. “In the United States, one parent can leave the country with a child without the consent of the other parent.” By contrast, many other countries such as China and Argentina require an official document giving permission of the parent who is not traveling before minor children can travel abroad with only one parent.

“While exit controls would not have prevented the Brazilian abduction case [of Sean Goldman] as the mother tricked the father into believing she was going back to Brazil for a short vacation, exit controls would be very effective in preventing many other cases,” Mr. Schmidt says.

Sean Goldman’s case
In the case of Sean Goldman, Brazil’s chief justice on Tuesday ended a five-year custody battle when he ruled that the boy should be returned to his American father. On Wednesday, a Brazil federal court said that Sean should be returned by Thursday morning.

Sean was taken to Brazil by his mother in 2004, and remained with his stepfather after his mother died. His New Jersey father, David Goldman, had filed an abduction and custody case in US and Brazil courts, alleging that the mother had tricked him into taking his son away.

According to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abductions, an international child abduction occurs when one parent wrongfully removes a child to a foreign country or retains the child in a foreign country and refuses to permit the child to return to his habitual residence.

It’s not an abduction if a child is taken with the consent of the left-behind parent. But it is one if the abducting parent tricks the left behind parent into allowing the child to travel overseas for a short vacation in order to take them away permanently.

The area was smacked by a storm that blanketed a swath of the East Coast in snow, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights over the weekend.

On Wednesday and Thursday, inclement weather could pose a problem for travelers in Chicago, Illinois, CNN’s Weather Center reports. The city could be awash in freezing rain, which would ground or delay flights, possibly having the biggest impact at the city’s largest airport, Chicago O’Hare International.

Travel disruptions at Minnesota’s Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport also are possible because of the weather, but are not as likely, according to the Weather Center.

The weather system could bring cold air and ice from Wisconsin to St. Louis in eastern Missouri, possibly even dropping snow in Texas on Wednesday night and Thursday, CNN meteorologists said.

While residents in the Midwest await a potentially icy Christmas, in the East, airlines scrambled to accommodate passengers affected by the weekend storm.

In addition to refunds, a spokesman for Delta said the airline is providing a weather waiver that allows passengers to reschedule without a penalty if they were scheduled to travel before Christmas.

Western North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern Kentucky and northeast Tennessee have a combined 182,588 people without power, according to three utility companies that serve the areas.

A US man who triggered a major alert by falsely claiming his son was adrift in a helium balloon has been sentenced to 90 days in jail – and his wife to 20.

Richard Heene, 48, and his 45-year-old wife Mayumi said in October their son had been carried off by the balloon.

Six-year-old Falcon Heene was finally found hiding at home.

In court in Colorado, Heene appeared to fight back tears as he apologised to rescue workers and the community, saying he was “very, very sorry”.

The judge also ordered four years of supervised probation for the couple and banned them from receiving any form of financial benefit from the case.

Heene and his wife Mayumi had pleaded guilty to charges that they carried out the balloon stunt to promote a reality TV show.

‘Wasted money’

The prosecutor had argued the couple should face time in jail to act as a deterrent to others who may be considering mounting similar stunts for financial gain and publicity.

He said Heene had “wasted a lot of man power and a lot of money in wanting to get himself some publicity”.

He argued that the couple had acted not on the behest of any TV companies, but that “they came up with it all on their own, not necessarily just to get a TV show but at least to put their name out there again and maybe in hopes that somebody would pick them up”.

“For that,” he said, “they do need to be punished”.

Richard Heene will be allowed to serve 60 days of his 90-day sentence on release, allowing him to work as a construction contractor during the day, while spending the night in jail.

He will start his sentence on 11 January 2010.

Mayumi Heene will begin her sentence after her husband’s to ensure their children are still cared for.

She will be allowed to report to jail on two days a week, return home at night, and serve the sentence through jail-supervised community service.

The judge also ruled that her husband must serve 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the community and public service agencies which helped search for his son.

The couple have already been ordered to pay $42,000 (£26,000) in restitution for the emergency services’ rescue efforts.

According to British media reports, the evening of December 22 local time, American Airlines Boeing 737 in the capital, Kingston, Jamaica International Airport, landing out of the runway, folded into two parts. Jamaican Minister of Information on the local media that the incident caused no deaths, but 40 people were injured.

Creech’s employer, Arrow Trucking abruptly calling it quits. The company’s owner, Doug Pielsticker; offering no comment. Drivers stranded across the country. This couple is from North Carolina. Creech says for several weeks, paychecks bounced. Draining his account, and most recently: gas cards were suspended, drivers were told to park their trucks, and go home.
The past year, he noticed the company’s struggles.

“They run you good one week and run you bad the next week,” said Creech.

But he never saw this coming.

“It was like an uppercut man,” said Creech.

His journey home just got tougher. Once he got the bad news, he and his girlfriend tried siphoning gas from trucks parked nearby– desperation.
Hoping to make it back to North Carolina.

“Right when we’re ready to go they do this,” said Creech.

The same thing happened to hundreds more.

A number of trucking companies are already offering to help.

“We’re going to hire a few of you guys and try to do the best we can to help out,” said a recruiter from another truck company.

And so, fired, on the streets, and offered work, all in the same parking lot. This recruiter has 30 job openings but hundreds more could spend the holidays wondering, and worrying what’s next.
