Air France is the first European carrier to introduce the Airbus A380 double-decker Superjumbo in it

Air France is the first European carrier to introduce the Airbus A380 double-decker Superjumbo in its fleet, with the first scheduled commercial flight taking place between Paris Charles-de-Gaulle and New York JFK airports. Air France has 12 of the type on order and plans to take delivery of the first three in the 2009/2010 winter season. Their first plane is already the 20th of the type in operation and now all three airline alliances operate at least one of the type.

380 tickets for each of the first flights were auctioned off on e-Bay in October, where all proceeds went to charity organizations selected by Air France. The first European owned SuperJumbo seats 538 passengers – compared to just 450 at Qantas, 471 at Singapore Airlines and 489 at Emirates. The so-far most crowded A380 has only 9 seats in First Class, 80 in Business and 449 in Economy. 22 flight attendants will be taking care of the 538 passengers – meaning one steward(ess) for every 25 travellers. Besides being the first European airline to own the A380, Air France will also be the first to operate the aircraft to the African Continent as it plans to introduce the plane to a daily Johannesburg flight later this winter following the Paris-New York route.

At the launch ceremony Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon did not only focus on the ”usual” media messaging around the unrivaled luxury of the A380 (as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas did earlier), but instead pointed out the savings that this aircraft will bring for the company. Each aircraft will allow the carrier to save €12-€15 million ($17.7-$22.1 million) per year based on their calculations. This is mostly due to the size of the plane and that it can replace two other flights, which could be serviced by an Airbus A340-300 (equivalent to the upper deck) and a Boeing 777-200 (equivalent to the main deck of the A380) for example. Flying the same number of passengers in just a single A380 instead means 20% reduction in operating costs as the frequencies on busy routes can be rationalized by replacing two flights which leave at similar times by one flight, while offering the same number of seats. For example, between Paris and New York, an A380 leaving at 1:35pm can replace two flights operated by an A340 and a 777-200, leaving at 10:30am and at 1:35pm respectively. The same connecting morning flights can still service and feed the “big” flight.

On top of all the rationalization of flights, the A380 uses less fuel per passenger. It burns less than three litres per 100 km! Besides the gas emmissions, the A380 creates less noise than its closest rival, the Boeing 747 – half as much at take-off! I had the personal experience of seeing and (not) hearing the A380 land in Frankfurt on one of its test-flights back in 2007 with Lufthansa crew – and we were all shocked by the little noise it generated compared to other aircraft landing on the same approach route before and after it. The Air France A380 is also quieter in the cabin itself, and besides the 220 windows it has special lighting features to reflect the time of the day within a flight and to help synchronizing the body-clock of the passengers. Guests can also meet up during the flight for a drink and a snack in one of the 6 bars onboard. One of these is for Première (First Class) on the main deck, two for Affaires (Business Class) on the upper deck and three for Voyageur (Economy Class), with two at the main deck and one upstairs.

We hope Air France and its passengers will be happy with the first new Airbus A380 flying under European registration and providing the first Transatlantic connection aboard the double-decker superjumbo between Europe and North America. Please leave your comments if you happened to be on one of these flights and would like to share your experiences with our readers!

Download the AirFrance Airbus A380 Factsheet (pdf)

Separately, but conincidentally at the same time as the first Air France A380 flight: Emirates said it will begin serving Paris Charles de Gaulle with a 489-seat A380 from Dubai on Dec. 29 rather than Feb. 1. “An operational review, coupled with demand on the route, has led to an earlier introduction,” it said. The A380 will fly thrice-weekly to start, becoming daily Jan. 17.

EADS released these photos of the KC-30 MRTT refueling fighters. The company previously released photos of refueling as viewed through the 3D controller’s panel video screen. The MRTT has now “passed gas” (as we like to say, much to the consternation of the more straight-laced crowd) through the new flying boom from the MRTT.

Source: EADS North America

These delayed tests have been the target of much criticism from Boeing supporters, who pointed out that EADS has been delayed in meeting milestones for the Royal Australian Air Force deliveries, which are now 18 months late. About six months of the delay was due to customer change-order requests.

Air India is pushing back delivery dates on 30 787s and 777s, in a cost-cutting move. The airline al

Air India is pushing back delivery dates on 30 787s and 777s, in a cost-cutting move.

The airline also says it will lease out three ultra-long-range 777-200LRs that Boeing recently delivered to it.

The deferals are part of a cost-cutting plan that will save Air India about $322 million, according to The Hindu newspaper. Air India was scheduled to take three 777-300ERs starting next year, and was set to take the first of its 27 787-8s in April 2011.

The planes were all part of a 68-jet order that the state-run airline placed in December 2005. The deal was valued at $11 billion at list prices at the time, although its actual value probably was more like $7.8 billion, after discounts.

Airbus also has been dealing with customer deferals. On Tuesday, US Airways also announced it will defer delivery of 54 Airbus jets – A320s and A330s – until at least 2013, a move that will save it $2.5 billion in the short term. US Air also said it would push back delivery of its first A350XWBs from 2015 to 2017.

All these deferals could put pressure on Boeing and Airbus production rates in the near term. However, they could also open slots for the handful of airlines that are looking to buy planes right now, such as United Airlines or Emirates.

In other news, Boeing executives say they’re talking with Thai Airways about an order for 777F cargo jets. Thai recently announced plans to launch a new cargo-jet business.

US Airways early this morning announced it has deferred deliveries of 54 Airbus wide- and narrow-bod

US Airways early this morning announced it has deferred deliveries of 54 Airbus wide- and narrow-body airplanes from 2010 to 2013 and beyond, including the A350 from 2015 to 2017.

While a blow to Airbus on the one hand, it could help the company win the order on at United Airlines on the other.

The battle between Boeing and Airbus to win United’s order heated up significantly from our October 21 report in which we noted that, at the time, United was leaning toward Airbus. Since then Boeing has come on strong with the 787 to Airbus’s A350. The Chicago Tribune has this report on the competition.

The A350 deferral by USAirways opens up early delivery positions in 2015 for United. The lack of early delivery slots has been on on-going problem for both Airbus and Boeing, with the large backlogs for the A350 and 787 programs. Boeing, of course, has had some 80+ cancellations for the 787 and a number of deferrals. There has been a debate within Boeing whether to release these positions to Sales to offer to potential customers such as United; or for Production to retain the slots as a means to catch up on nearly three years of delays. We don’t know if this debate has been resolved one way or another, or if some slots have been returned to Sales and others kept by Production or how the Line 2 decision plays into this.

What we do know is that at least initially Boeing has been challenged in offering early slots to United.

The now-open 2015 slots for the A350 could be a tipping point in the campaign unless Boeing can do better. As always, pricing and financing offered by both sides will be important, too.

As for the single-aisle campaign, this won’t begin until next year.

Gulf Air (Bahrain) has decided to radically change its business plan. In the future it will focus on its short-haul markets. This will also radically affect what the airline has on order. The flag carrier has 20 Airbus A330-300s and 24 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners on order. These orders are expected to be modified. In addition Gulf Air will sell five Airbus A340-300s.

Key points: The ability to increase production rates to sell more 767s in the coming years; Lower pr

Key points:

The ability to increase production rates to sell more 767s in the coming years;

Lower production costs, which will be built into the KC-X bid in the hot competition with the expected Northrop Grumman KC-30 submission.

Boeing’s proposed KC-767 refueling tanker will benefit from plans to establish a surge production line for the 787 program.

The connection is not obvious, for Boeing didn’t suggest as much when it announced that Charleston (SC) will be the location for the second 787 production line. As Line 2 is being established, Boeing will put a “surge” 787 line in Everett (WA), where Line 1 is located. The surge line will be in the forward bay where the 767 line is, requiring relocating the 767 line to the aft part of the bay.

Boeing plans to implement Lean production practices in the relocated 767 line, which has its origins for the airplane’s 1982 entry-into-service date. Lean practices will result in about “a 20% improvement in unit time as we increase [the production] rate and incorporate efficiencies,” a 767 program spokesperson tells us.

Boeing will begin to relocate the 767 line in 1Q2010; it will be operational in 1Q2011.

The efficiencies include:

New tool designs with new technology and automation that will reduce flow, rebalance the line and improve assembly efficiencies;

Improving employee ergonomics;

New tooling to reduce the flow required to assemble the wings, which improves inventory holding costs and quality and overall costs;

Laser alignment in place of manual tools; and, among other things,

Incorporating auto-riveting and drilling to improve unit time and quality.

The smaller footprint also will allow Boeing to streamline processes and consolidate support.

Boeing declined to quantify the before-and-after employee head count for the 767 line. But the spokesperson said that a planned production rate increase in 2011 from one to two 767s a month will require the addition of “several hundred people in various skills.

“The increased efficiency means we will increase by less than we would have and build a better product. The increase in efficiency will allow us to sell even more 767s in the next few years.”

These benefits have clear implications for the prospect of building the KC-767 tanker should Boeing win the contract, which the USAF hopes to award in August next year (a goal we believe may be optimistic, given the political meddling that is going on). Most observers already believe a protest by the loser is likely, further delaying the contract.

Assuming Boeing selects the KC-767 as its choice to bid for the Air Force’s KC-X (which we think will be the case), the lower cost of building the airplane will be reflected in Boeing’s bid price, the 767 spokesperson confirms. With the competition so far emphasizing cost rather than value in the Draft RFP (Air Force rhetoric to the contrary notwithstanding), this should Boeing an additional advantage over the larger Northrop Grumman KC-30, based on the Airbus A330-200, which has a higher list price than Boeing’s 767-200ER on which the KC-767 is based.

The Air Force currently plans to procure its KC-X at the rate of 12-18 a year, or 1 to 1 ½ a month. The KC-X must also be what is called ITAR-compliant, which means access to military-unique equipment must be controlled during production. The new, Lean line will be prepared for ITAR requirements, says the Boeing spokesperson.

Boeing faces the challenge of relocating the line while the 767 is in production.

“We will continue to build airplanes sections in our current tools and location during the product line relocation,” the spokesperson tells us. “This process will require a synchronized, highly sequenced series of activities to minimize disruption. Concurrently, we will be reactivating rate tools, upgrading and incorporating improvements, adding new technology and moving and building new tools as part of this relocation activity. As a standard practice, we maintain and use our existing tools until tool tryouts are complete for all-new, upgraded, reactivated and moved tools. This is how we will mitigate disruption to our active production line.”

Although our emphasis in this column is how Lean will aid Boeing in a KC-767 bid cost basis, the hints that Boeing may gain more 767 sales in connection with the 787 surge should not be overlooked, either.

Air France (Paris) brought the new Airbus A380 to New York (JFK) yesterday (November 20, 2009). Operating as flight AF 380 it carried 380 winning bidders on the auction flight. The proceeds will go to humanitarian projects. Regular CDG-JFK service commences on November 23.

Here is the official AF press release:

This morning (November 20), at 11:39 am, Air France’s A380 took off from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, operating flight AF 380, the first transatlantic flight between Europe and the United States by A380. Among the passengers were the 380 winning bidders for seats on the inaugural Paris-New York – Paris flights. This auction raised proceeds of 300,000 euros which will finance five different humanitarian projects by charities chosen by the Air France Foundation.

The aircraft, registration F-GHJA, landed at New York-Kennedy airport at 1:20 local time, 7:20 Paris time.

The proceeds of this auction of seats on the two inaugural Paris-New York-Paris flights finally reached 300,000 euros, more than expected. The amount will thus finance 5 humanitarian projects for children in need instead of the three initially planned.

The benefits of the auction for the inaugural Paris-New York-Paris flights will go to several projects in aid of humanitarian associations for children in need all over the world. The Air France Foundation supports these projects.

Starting on Monday November 23, the A380 will operate daily scheduled flights:

AF 006 Paris-New York leaving at 1:30, arriving at 3:45 pm;

and AF 007 New York-Paris leaving at 7:15 pm, arriving at 8:35 the following day.

From Paris, Air France will operate the A380 on its Johannesburg route as from February 3, 2010 and will therefore be the first airline to operate the A380 to Africa.

Paris-based Air France has completed its first revenue flight with the Airbus A380. Flight AF 380 arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport at 1318 hrs, after crossing the Atlantic from Paris (Charles de Gaulle), where it departed at 1119 hrs. The flight marked the A380’s first transatlantic flight by a European airline and the aircraft was met by a customary water cannon salute on arrival in New York.

Onboard the double-decker aircraft are 538 passengers, invited guests and 24 crew, who were treated to complimentary champagne and a 3-member jazz band. 380 passengers who participated in a charity auction in October 2008 also raised 300,000 euros to benefit humanitarian projects supported by the Air France Foundation. Having generated a larger amount than expected, Air France will donate the proceeds from the auction to 2 more charities in Brazil and Madagascar, in addition to 3 previously announced organizations in France, India and South Africa.

The Air France A380 features 538 seats in a 3-class configuration with innovations including improved seating, mood lighting and an onboard meeting area showcasing artwork from various museum collections. The airline has announced Johannesburg as the second destination for its A380 following New York, which will be operated daily. Air France joins Dubai’s Emirates, Sydney-based Qantas and Singapore Airlines as the fourth operator of the type.

United Airlines is expected to place an order for 25 long-range 787s or A350s before the end of the

United Airlines is expected to place an order for 25 long-range 787s or A350s before the end of the year, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The airline is being “furiously courted” by both Boeing and Airbus, the newspaper reports, citing unnamed industry insiders.

Meanwhile, another long-time Boeing customer — Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary — is just furious over the way he’s being treated by the Company, and is threatening to stop buying planes unless he gets a better deal before year’s end.

First, United Airlines.

Earlier this year, the airline announced plans to come in the market in a major way, with an order for up to 150 planes. United’s weak balance sheet made many doubt whether they were serious, but it now appears that they’ve been able to line up financing and are seriously shopping, hoping to strike bargains for taking airplanes originally scheduled to go to airlines that now would prefer to wait to take deliveries.

Insiders told the Tribune that United wants to order 25 long-range widebodys now — with options on up to 75 more — and then come back next year with a tender for single-aisle planes to replace the 96 757-200s it now operates. A firm order for 25 787s would be worth about $4.2 billion at list prices – or about $3.1 billion after what analysts say are typical discounts. Replacing the 96 757s with similarly-sized 737-900ERs would cost about $7.8 billion at list prices, or maybe $5.2 billion after discounts.

Historically, Airbus has cut better deals than Boeing (Boeing complains that’s because of the illegal subsidies Airbus gets), and analysts are telling the Tribune that Team Toulouse could have the advantage on price again. Airbus also would dearly love to get a second American carrier to buy its A350-XWB. So far, only US Airways has done so.

For Boeing, it’s more a matter of prestige, they say: are Boeing executives in Chicago willing to let Airbus do a deal an airline whose headquarters is only a few blocks away?

But money is an object for Boeing as well. As you probably heard, the Company broke ground on its ill-conceived South Carolina expansion today. The Company also made headlines in financial markets this week when it issued $1.2 billion worth of corporate bonds — essentially going out and borrowing that much cash, to help cover cost over-runs and penalties caused by the delays to the massively outsourced 787. To pay back that debt — and to pay the estimated $1.5 billion analysts say it will spend to duplicate its existing Puget Sound facilities in Charleston — Boeing needs cash flow, which means it needs this deal.

O’Leary, the Ryanair chief, also seems to think Boeing should be motivated to cut prices and sell planes. But this week he said he’s this close to throwing up his hands and walking away from a potential order for 200 737s, after months of discussions.

If Boeing doesn’t make a better offer by the end of November, it’s off, O’Leary told reporters. “I am not wasting another Christmas holiday trying to talk to guys in Seattle,” he told Reuters. The Irish Independent also reported that O’Leary says it’s “highly unlikely” that a deal will get done.

Ryanair now operates a fleet of 202 737-800s, and as of October, had another 110 on order. A deal for 200 more ‘Three-Sevens would be worth about $15.3 billion at list prices, but analysts say Boeing typically discounts 737 orders by about 30 percent, or even higher for its best customers, making it about a $10 billion deal.

O’Learly has been public about his frustration with Boeing management all this fall. Earlier, he hinted that Boeing managers seemed obsessed with their 787 problems and unable to focus on doing business with him.
