Fantasy of Flight Aircraft Collection

28º 10’ 52” N / 81º 48’ 33” W

Polk City Florida USA lies between the Tampa and Orlando. Kermit Weeks chose property there to not only house his extensive airplane collection but to build an entire experience. A wealthy man, he built an airfield to resemble a WW II era air base. The visitor observes a retro water tower with its checkered livery, a grass air strip (underlain by an engineered surface to enhance draining) and a lake for landings by aquatic aircraft. Inside there is a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress one walks through and around — as it sits as if being serviced in the field. And then one walks into the first of two hangers. There are more aircraft here, by far, than in most museums. Only national museums rival the scale of this collection. The range of airplanes on exhibit spans aviation history from its earliest times through WW II — no jets here — notably, the majority are kept in flying condition.

Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina and retro water tower of the Fantasy of Flight Aircraft Collection — photo by Joe May

There is one aircraft here that drew me like iron to a magnet, the Short Brothers Sunderland Mk V — a four engine flying boat flown by the RAF in WW II. As a bonus one is allowed to walk through the main deck to see the aircraft as used when it was an airliner, not a military maritime patrol aircraft. The aircraft is immense and one can see it as it sits on beaching gear in one of the hangers. What it must have been like to tow the Sunderland to the water, float her and then remove the unwieldy beaching gear? There is not only a Ford Trimotor but one of its contemporary aircraft, a Stinson Trimotor.

<img class="size-full wp-image-613 " title="Fantasy of Flight North Hanger" src="http://travelforaircraft.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/blog-fantasy-of-flight_mg_0317.jpg" alt="Fantasy of Flight Aircraft Collection North Hanger with Short Bros.
There are too many aircraft to list here but there are about four dozen housed in both hangers. Three of the especially historic aircraft are a Grumman F3F (nicknamed Flying Barrel), a Cierva C.30-A Autigiro* and a replica of a Bachem Ba-349 Natter (Viper). There are many more, to be sure, including a Curtiss TF-40 Kittyhawk, Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI, Lockheed Constellation, Grumman J2F Duck, North American P-51C Mustang and Fieseler Fi-156 Storch (Stork).

North American P-51C Mustang — photo by Joe May

Getting there is easily done by driving along interstate I-4 to Polk City. The nearest major airports are Tampa International Airport and Orlando International Airport. Entry is about $20, there is an excellent diner/café and modern restrooms. Extras are also on hand … a tour of a third hangar used for restoration work, a tour of the restoration wood shop, a daily flying demonstration and biplane for-hire rides.

It’s not every day that a new international airport is constructed, especially in these economic times, but Puerto Penasco, one of Mexico’s most remote locations, opened its first international airport on Thursday, making commercial access to the region that much easier.

Now travelers have access to the Sea of Cortez beaches, wildlife and recreation that once required a drive across desert and mountain terrain to get to.

The Mar de Cortes International Airport, launched by Grupo Vidanta, makes the destination less than an hour from Phoenix and less than two hours from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Albuquerque. With its opening will come hotels, resorts, golf courses, homes and infrastructure.

So be one of the first to explore this exciting new region from budget hotel’s to five star properties.

The carbon monoxide and hydrogen can be combined later to produce syngas, a building block for most transportation fuels. The first working prototype, shown above, has demonstrated that the process works, but efforts are underway to make it more efficient. Credit: Tyler Hamilton

Sandia scientists successfully test a machine that creates fuel from carbon dioxide.

By Tyler Hamilton

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have successfully demonstrated a prototype machine that uses the sun’s energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into the molecular building blocks that make up transportation fuels. The “Sunshine to Petrol” system could ultimately prove a practical way to recycle CO₂ from power and industrial plants into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, assuming the process can become at least twice as efficient as natural photosynthesis.

Until recently, the system had only been validated in a laboratory in small batches. A hand-built demonstration machine was successfully tested this fall. “This is a first-of-its-kind prototype we’re evaluating,” says Sandia researcher Rich Diver, inventor of the device.

“In the short term we see this as an alternative to sequestration,” says James Miller, a chemical engineer with Sandia’s advanced materials laboratory. Instead of just pumping CO2 underground for permanent storage, Miller says, the sun’s abundant energy can be used to achieve “reverse combustion” that essentially turns carbon dioxide back into a fuel. “It’s a productive utilization of CO2 that you might capture from a coal plant, a brewery, and similar concentrated sources.”

The cylindrical metal machine, called the Counter-Rotating-Ring Receiver Reactor Recuperator (CR5), relies on concentrated solar heat to trigger a thermo-chemical reaction in an iron-rich composite material. The material is designed to give up an oxygen molecule when exposed to extreme heat, and then retrieve an oxygen molecule once it cools down.

The machine is designed with a chamber on each side. One side is hot, the other cool. Running through the center is a set of 14 Frisbee-like rings rotating at one revolution per minute. The outer edge of each ring is made up of an iron oxide composite supported by a zirconium matrix. Scientists use a solar concentrator to heat the inside of one chamber to 1,500 º C, causing the iron oxide on one side of the ring to give up oxygen molecules. As the affected side of the ring rotates to the opposite chamber, it begins to cool down and carbon dioxide is pumped in. This cooling allows the iron oxide to steal back oxygen molecules from the CO₂, leaving behind carbon monoxide. The process is continually repeated, turning an incoming supply of CO2 into an outgoing stream of carbon monoxide.

Miller says the same process can be used to produce hydrogen, the only difference being that water, instead of carbon dioxide, is pumped into the second chamber. The two separately retrieved gases–hydrogen and carbon monoxide–are then mixed together to make syngas, which can be used to make a “drop-in replacement” for traditional fuels, says Miller.

It wasn’t the fault of a creaky old radar system, but of high-tech flight-monitoring computers

It wasn’t the fault of a creaky old radar system, but of high-tech flight-monitoring computers.

By David Talbot

The major failure of air-traffic control yesterday (Thursday November 19th) was yet another sign that our outdated radar-based system needs to be replaced with a sleek new satellite-based one, right? That’s the logical progression of much of the coverage out there.

The reality is that, yes, the system needs to be replaced. But yesterday’s failure was a high-tech one that could afflict a system based on satellites, too.

The problem wasn’t directly related to radar, but with the National Airspace Data Interchange Network, a system for processing flight plans and information for all flights in the country. It failed in both of its locations: Salt Lake City and Atlanta. This meant that automated regional FAA systems couldn’t process flight information. As a result, controllers had to enter information manually. This caused delays that rippled across the country. “A satellite-based system would have had the same problem,” R. John Hansman, an MIT aerospace and air traffic control expert, wrote to me this afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration hopes to roll out a Global Positioning System-based control system, called Next Generation or NextGen, in stages. By 2020 most planes will carry a cockpit gadget that continuously broadcasts the planes’ GPS-derived location, altitude, and speed to ground controllers. In later years, the system will extend so that this information is picked up by other planes, too, so that pilots can gain more control over their routing and spacing. As they beam their position information to one another they’ll be able, to some extent, to self-navigate. However, there will always be an FAA air-traffic system keeping track. It’s unlikely that pilots will ever be permitted to make all takeoff, routing, and landing decisions entirely by themselves in the event of failures of national air-traffic computers, as happened yesterday.

In the first two days of French Cup qualifying, two of the biggest names in this round were knocked

In the first two days of French Cup qualifying, two of the biggest names in this round were knocked out by smaller teams.

The major upset today was when Ligue 2 side Nantes lost to CFA 2 side Concarneau by a score of 3-0. While Nantes has not been as impressive the last few games, the Ligue 2 side were considered the overwhelming favorites to win this match.

Instead, Nantes coach Gernot Rohr blamed the loss on a missed penalty call by the official. Still, Rohr said that his side needs to concentrate more on the Ligue 2 championship instead of the French Cup, which seems more like an excuse for not winning against the amateur side.

Nantes were not the only Ligue 2 side that saw an earlier than expected exit from the competition. A number of other teams that were expected to go far got to “concentrate more on their league play” after Sunday.

While some matches were held today, the biggest upset of the tournement so far was yesterday, when CFA 2 side Aircraft (yes, there is a team simply named Aircraft) defeated Ligue 2 contenders (and possible Ligue 1 promoters) Le Havre AC by a score of 1-0.

Other Ligue 2 teams being upset where Clermont Foot, losing to CFA side Yzeure on penalty kicks, Chateauroux losing to CFA side Saumur 3-1, and Bastia losing to CFA side Marignane 1-0. A third of all Ligue 2 teams entering the qualifying Friday are not in the competition today.

Even some Championnat National teams where upset, with Bayonne and Mills losing to amatuer teams as well.

While the last few day’s attention has been centered around Thierry Henry, Marseille vs. PSG matchup and Auxerre taking the lead in Ligue 1, the most exciting play might have been the amatuers taking on the professional teams of Ligue 2 in the French Cup.

I have been off chasing other things the last few months. However Aviation still needs my support. I have watched some videos that state areas of concern and improvement. DC is still not a friend of aviation! They want to turn a blind eye to the damage they have done!

It is clear that we could add Jobs back in to the industry we could put a lot of people back to work! Since flying is coming down to private (small aircraft), airlines and military aviation. Soon we will not have pilots to support our need for fast transportation (Aviation)! Soon we will lose more and more mechanics.

Oh well what does it matter!

That’s one hell of a big airplane: Air Austral have ordered the first single class Airbus A380 double-decker super jumbos. These are so big they should require capitals – SUPER JUMBOS.

The capacity – a massive 840 passengers. Air Austral have ordered two. Based in La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, the carrier will operate the aircraft on the high-density route from La Réunion to Paris.

The A380 normally seats 525 passengers in a three-class configuration, but this one will have eight hundred and forty passengers on one aircraft. With its spacious and extremely quiet cabins, we will be entering a new era in terms of economic air travel, BUT

Do we even want to think about how long the line up’s will be for the washroom and don’t even think about how long you have to wait for your checked bag?

San Diego is home port to one-third the U.S. Navy’s fleet and now the city has a naval museum

San Diego is home port to one-third the U.S. Navy’s fleet and now the city has a naval museum to rival any on the east coast: The USS Midway. And what a splash it has made.

Attendance at the museum has exceeded expectations ever since it opened in 2004.

A visit to the museum makes it easy to see why the attraction is setting box office records. With all the precision you would expect from a military-based organization, the founders of the Aircraft Carrier Museum have put together an impressive visual and historical experience that appeals to all ages, and especially to those who have any sort of fascination with things military.

The way we saw it, the Midway offered a great balance between being orderly and structured and yet still individualized to each person’s interests. As part of the $13 admission, each visitor is loaned a “Walkman”-like audio device and headphones to hear pre-recorded explanations of 29 different points of interest in various locations around the ship. But you’re totally on your own – you can see these points of interest in any order or even skip some if you like. The explanations are relatively brief, but usually you can get further explanation by just pushing the play button. Each visitor can go at his or her individual pace and linger where there is the most interest.

We’ve experienced this type of audio system before, but the Aircraft Carrier Museum does it right. By way of comparison, the Jimi Hendrix museum in Seattle uses a similar system, but the audio units are big and unwieldy — and the explanations can’t be individualized.

So why is it worth visiting the U.S.S. Midway? Just visiting an aircraft carrier, for one thing, is a treat unto itself. But in the Midway’s case, there is a 47-year history that is good to keep in the back of your mind as you get a real sense of what it’s like to live and work on an aircraft carrier.

The Midway was the world’s largest warship when it was launched in 1945 and remained so for more than a decade. Named for the famous Battle of Midway, the carrier did not actually see service in that battle, but did serve in combat during the Vietnam War and was one of six carriers sent to fight Iraq during Desert Storm. The ship also played a vital role in many historical achievements – the first rocket fired from a ship was fired from the Midway, and the first jet takeoff from an aircraft carrier was made from this very flight deck.

Visitors get a good up-close look at the living and working conditions on board the Midway. Entering on the massive Hangar Deck, they are first treated to several exhibits offering history on the ship and its aircraft. Then doorways open here and there to allow visitors to step into the galley and mess deck area – where 13,000 meals were served each day – and into such work areas as the weapons control station, metal shop and post office. Nearby, a bank of computer simulators are available so you can try your hand at “flying” some of the Midway’s jet aircraft.

Walking through the ship, we could easily picture this vessel as a “city at sea.” While significantly smaller than today’s carriers – and, by the way, the brand-new U.S.S. Ronald Reagan is visible just across the bay from the Midway – the ship had a crew of 4,500. It has 200 miles of piping, 3,000 miles of copper conductor and storage capacity for 2.23 million gallons of fuel – not including 1.24 million gallons of jet fuel.

Up on the Flight Deck, visitors see aircraft and the systems that help pilots bring their aircraft in to land on a “postage stamp” in pitching seas. The superstructure houses the primary flight control area and bridge, and offers visitors the chance to see where flight operations were controlled. A suggestion: when you visit the Midway, go first to the superstructure area because this was the only place on the ship where we encountered lines.

Originally designed to carry propeller-driven fighter aircraft, the Midway soon adapted to the new jet aircraft that became the mainstay of American naval airpower. The deck was reconfigured and catapults and electronics were upgraded to handle the ship’s F/A-18 Hornets, A-6 Intruders and A-7 Corsair II’s – up to 68 jet airplanes on any given mission. Today visitors will find examples of those aircraft on the flight deck as well as an E-2C Hawkeye and an F-4 Phantom II, one of the workhorses in the Vietnam War. Helicopters and historic propeller-driven aircraft also are on display.

Interestingly, aircraft drivers also are on display in the form of docents who volunteer their time to give first-hand accounts of their time on the Midway. We came across former A-7 pilot John Burkholder giving visitors an impassioned explanation of the “meatball” landing system that optically arranges lights to help guide a pilot down the glide slope to the carrier’s flight deck. Burkholder’s enthusiasm for the system was heartfelt as he remembers one dark night in the mid-70’s when it took him four times to land his jet on a pitching, rolling U.S.S. Midway.

Burkholder, who lives in the San Diego suburb of Fallbrook, is one of 160 docents who each volunteer up to 20 hours a month to share their stories with up to 5,000 Midway visitors on any given day. Usually there are about nine docents on board posted at various locations on the ship to give the museum a feel of “living history.”

As you might expect, Burkholder is proud of the ship that served as his base of operations for a three-year period in the 1970’s. Like many Midway veterans, Burkholder is a believer in the “Midway Magic,” a lore that has grown up as the carrier seemed to prove itself better and more reliable than many of its sister ships. Burkholder points out it was no accident that the admiral conducting the Gulf War chose Midway as his command ship during that war.

While visitor attendance on the Midway is running more than double what was expected, Burkholder noted that, at this stage, more men than women are visiting the attraction. But he says that’s just a matter of getting the word out to women that there is more here than meets the eye.

“As soon as we tell them the Midway served 13,000 meals a day,” Burkholder said, “they want to see that.”

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: The San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum is located on San Diego’s waterfront, 910 N. Harbor Drive. It’s easily accessible from downtown and there is ample parking in the general vicinity.

Everyone secretly loves flight simulation. Soaring above (or below) the clouds is a great experience

Everyone secretly loves flight simulation. Soaring above (or below) the clouds is a great experience, however it is generated. The iPhone and iPod touch devices, despite their small screens, are great for this sort of activity. The computing and graphics power is quite great and the accelerometer makes it quite hard to crash.

Here are my top flight sims in no particular order… unfortunately none are free, although Lite or Trainer versions might exist or become available…

X-Plane is a simulator that is absolutely physically realistic to the extent that a mobile phone can be. It presents serious options to practise or try out “proper” manoeuvres, including using excellently developed navigation on beautiful aircraft. There are terrain options, other aircraft (occasionally) and challenging runways. It uses the accelerometer to great effect. Multiplayer or not.

F.A.S.T. is an aerial combat game that is, again, very realistic, although less so. There is a social club, a multiplayer mode and an option to fight against enemies in planes with blackout-causing g-force. The satisfaction of this one can be immense – after all, it is designed to be challenging, with a name like “Fleet Air Superiority Training”. If you like missions, this is one for you.

Flight Control is about moving aircraft of various sizes and speeds to their correct helipads and runways. It’s a 2D setup but don’t be fooled – co-ordinating movements of planes of different speeds and requirements is tricky. There are several terrain modes, and the game itself is easy to use. A good value item that interacts with others over Bluetooth, WiFi or even Facebook (although that’s not live). Enjoy dragging aircraft around with your finger, then…

I would like to particularly thank the developers of these apps for their great work. Keep it up, guys!

Shown is the view from the far downstream end into the test section of the U.S. Air Force Academy water tunnel. Three blades of the cycloidal turbine are visible at the far end. Engineer Stefan Siegel and his colleagues test the turbine using the tunnel, with both steady and oscillating flow conditions simulating a shallow-water wave-flow field. (Credit: SSgt Danny Washburn, U.S. Air Force Academy, Department of Aeronautics)

The ocean is a potentially vast source of electric power, yet as engineers test new technologies for capturing it, the devices are plagued by battering storms, limited efficiency, and the need to be tethered to the seafloor.

Now, a team of aerospace engineers is applying the principles that keep airplanes aloft to create a new wave-energy system that is durable, extremely efficient, and can be placed anywhere in the ocean, regardless of depth.

While still in early design stages, computer and scale-model tests of the system suggest higher efficiencies than wind turbines. The system is designed to effectively cancel incoming waves, capturing their energy while flattening them out, providing an added application as a storm-wave breaker.

The researchers, from the U.S. Air Force Academy, will present their design at the 62nd annual meeting of the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics on Nov. 24, 2009, in Minneapolis, Minn.

“Our group was working on very basic research on feedback flow control for years,” says lead researcher Stefan Siegel, referring to efforts to use sensors and adjustable parts to control how fluids flow around airfoils like wings. “For an airplane, when you control that flow, you better control flight–for example, enabling you to land a plane on a shorter runway.”

A colleague had read an article on wave energy in a magazine and mentioned it to Siegel and the other team members, and they realized they could operate a wave energy device using the same feedback control concepts they had been developing.

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the researchers developed a system that uses lift instead of drag to cause the propeller blades to move.

“Every airplane flies with lift, not with drag,” says Siegel. “Compare an old style windmill with a modern one. The new style uses lift and is what made wind energy viable–and it doesn’t get shredded in a storm like an old windmill. Fluid dynamics fixed the issue for windmills, and can do the same for wave energy.”

Windmills have active controls that turn the blades to compensate for storm winds, eliminating lift when it is a risk, and preventing damage.

The Air Force Academy researchers used the same approach with a hydrofoil (equivalent to an airfoil, but for water) and built it into a cycloidal propeller, a design that emerged in the 1930s and currently propels tugboats, ferries and other highly maneuverable ships.

The researchers changed the propeller orientation from horizontal to vertical, allowing direct interaction with the cyclic, up and down motion of wave energy. The researchers also developed individual control systems for each propeller blade, allowing sophisticated manipulations that maximize (or minimize, in the case of storms) interaction with wave energy.

Ultimately, the goal is to keep the flow direction and blade direction constant, cancelling the incoming wave and using standard gear-driven or direct-drive generators to convert the wave energy into electric energy. A propeller that is exactly out of phase with a wave will cancel that wave and maximize energy output.

The cancellation will also allow the float-mounted devices to function without the need of mooring, important for deep-sea locations that hold tremendous wave energy potential and are currently out of reach for many existing wave energy designs.

While the final device may be as large as 40 meters across, laboratory models are currently less than a meter in diameter. A larger version of the system will be tested next year at NSF’s Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) tsunami wave basin at Oregon State University, an important experiment for proving the efficacy of the design.

The conference takes place from Nov. 22-24, 2009, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The conference is the year’s largest devoted to fluid dynamics, bringing together researchers from across the world and across a wide range of disciplines.

The talk, “Deep Ocean Wave Cancellation Using a Cycloidal Turbine” is by Stefan Siegel, Tiger Jeans, and Thomas McLaughlin of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“The British military is testing a new helmet that allows fighter pilots to see through their airplanes. The system is actually very elegant in its simplicity. A series of camera are placed on the outside of the plane. The images from the cameras are fed back to the cockpit where they are projected inside the specially designed helmet, allowing the pilot to see 360 degrees around him/her. It will look to the pilot as if there is no plane at all… The cameras will even have infrared sensors, allowing pilots to look down, through the cockpit floor, in the dead of night, and identify targets.”
