Bueno Empecemos La Lista:

NUEVOS AIRPORT EXTREME Y TIME CAPSULE

Apple Inc. beat Wall Street expectations earlier this week when they announced their Q4′09 earnings. Considered to be the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, Apple Inc. simply asks “What recession?” Today, Apple Inc. continued their spectacular October when they announced several new products across their computer line.

Mac Mini Server

The Mac Mini was one of the computer models that got an upgrade. The $599 model got a spec bump with a faster processor (now 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, up from 2GHz), twice the memory (now 2GB, up from 1GB), and a larger hard drive (now 160GB, up from 120GB). The $799 has the 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM (up from 2GB) but the same 320GB hard drive. Both price points still have the GeForce 9400M GPU and 8x SuperDrive. In addition to the upgrades to the Mac Mini line, there is now a “Server Edition” of the Mac Mini that forgoes the 8x SuperDrive and instead packs in TWO 500GB hard drives. This $999 model packs a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and GeForce 9400M GPU. Snow Leopard Server is included of course.

Next, Apple updated the iMac line with two screen size choices (21.5 inches or 27 inches) that are 16:9 displays and are all-aluminum bodies. Both have IPS panels that are LED-backlit and have a 178-degree viewing angle. Also both models come with wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse at no additional cost. Starting at $1199, the 21.5 inch has a 1920×1080 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM standard (upgradable to 8GB), 500GB hard drive (1 & 2TB options available at $1499 price point), andGeForce 9400M GPU (ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU option available at $1499 price point). At $1699, the 27 inch has a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU (upgradable to ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU). Finally, at $1999 the 27 inch comes with the 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 (upgradable to 2.8GHz Core i7), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU. All models have 4 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, one FireWire 800 port, and SD card slot (finally), and 8x SuperDrive. The 27 inch has a video-in.

Unibody Macbook

The low-end Macbook gets a makeover with a new white unibody polycarbonate design (similar to Macbook Pros), built-in 7 hour battery, LED-backlit display, Glass Multi-Touch trackpad, 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM (upgradable to 4GB), 250GB hard drive (upgradable to 500GB), and GeForce 9400M GPU starting at $999.

Perhaps the most intriguing announcement today is the new Magic Mouse (no longer “Mighty”) for $69. It is the first multitouch wireless mouse on the market meaning you use your fingers to scroll, swipe, and click. The Magic Mouse is supposed to last 4 months on AA batteries.

Apple also revamped their remote with a new aluminum finish that is kinda like the bastard child of the iPod Nano and the old iPod Shuffle. It can control your iPod, iPhone, and/or Mac for $19.

Lastly, Apple updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for better performance.

Magic Mouse

Apple Remote

As previously rumored and posted on the MacRumors website, Apple has released some, if not all, of the expected updates to their Mac lineup. This includes: Updated iMacs, now with two choices for screen size: a 21! and 27″, and it includes a wireless mouse and keyboard.
Apple also released a new version of the Mac Mini, which sells for $999 and it is advertised as a “Mac Mini Server.” It includes Apple’s latest operating system, Snow Leopard Server, and it’s aimed for small business at an affordable entry price. Many will disagree, and will say “this is just an expensive mini”, but in reality, it is well-priced. The license for the server version of Snow Leopard sells for $499, so for another $500 you get a mini with the features that the “server mini” has.
In addition to these, the Macbooks were updated as well. Other products include: a new mouse labeled “Magic Mouse”, an all-aluminum remote control, as well as new and improved versions of the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme devices.

OK! Let’s just jump right in. After spendning an entire 2 days of my life working on creatin

OK! Let’s just jump right in. After spendning an entire 2 days of my life working on creating a wireless network on-board my houseboat, I really need to vent. My goal for this project seemed very simple to me, however, after the fact I guess it wasn’t. So much so that I have thrown in the towel before finishing it. Here is the chronicle venting this experience.

My goals were as follows:

1. Get reliable, decent speed internet access. “Decent” being defined as fast enough to watch medical education videos and podcasts in streaming format, as well as the occasional streamed instant netflix movie. I don’t mind buffering in the beginning for 30s or so

2. Make that internet connection wireless such that my old laptop can use it anywhere on the boat.

3. Create a wireless network on the boat that would include the laser printer and external usb hard drive that I already own. I want to be able to sit on the upper deck with my laptop and a beer, reading and writing files to my external hard drive, backing up important data, and printing an interesting article on the fly.

4. The ultimate (but optional) goal would be to connect my old desktop to the network for long enough to get all my old files off of it and onto the external hard drive, that I could then access with my laptop.

Solutions:

1. I have an unreliable public wifi connection via my marina that just won’t cut it anymore. I do have basic cable coming to the boat (included in all the marina slip packages), but would love to avoid the big cable companies because they have screwed me and others I know too many times. It came to my attention that Baltimore was going to be pioneering a new technology of city wide wifi called xohm(aka clear), based on 4g wireless technology. I originally signed up when it first unrolled, but quit soon after because the connection often dropped and was far too slow. Now, I was interested in trying again. I still had my modem, but I couldn’t get the service to connect. After 1 month of difficult conversations with xohm, they finally just sent me a new modem. I plugged it in and it worked immediately. Service was online in seconds! Internet access obtained. My review so far is that it is considerably slower than usual cable or dsl, but fast enough for my purposes, and quite reliable.

2. First, I bought a belkin wireless base station but later found out that there was no router built into it. Had to return it. I ended up buying apple’s airport extreme because it allowed printer and hard disk sharing by way of its usb port. Let me just say, I have little experience with apple products but have always heard legends of how user-friendly and intuitive their devices were. I bought an iphone when they first came out and have been in absolute bliss every since. I never missed the “productivity” and “connectivity” my previous windows mobile smart phones purportedly had. The iphone was what I always thought a handheld SHOULD be. The airport extreme was a totally different experience. As if the folks at apple were so cocky about the simplicity of the APE, there are barely any instructions. Plug and play, I guess. I hooked everything up and had wireless internet via the router almost in seconds. Beautiful. The printer and the hard drive were far from that simple. I hooked up the hard drive first, thinking that would be simpler. The hard drive is a cheap Maxtor 150gb usb drive I got at wal-mart 2 years ago for 50-60 dollars. No frills. I plugged it into the APE, and it was identified in the airport utility disk menu. I could see it listed in the window, but clicking on it doesn’t do anything. I can’t find any other way to access it. Internet searches suggested that it needed to be reformatted from NTFS to FAT32 (crazy). I had to shuffle files around (my lowly 40gb laptop is full), and then download a 3rd party app called swissknife to format it (xp won’t do FAT32. Swissknife crashes every time I open it. An internet search suggests that other people have the same problem with no known fix (other than try another drive that is more compatible). I found another app (there are suprisingly few for this purpose) called Partition Wizard that did the job. Now in Fat32, I went back to the Airport Utility to see my drive in all its glory. Upon starting the Utility, it was not able to detect any wireless devices anymore! My Airport Express had vanished. After another hour and completely removing everything and starting over, it appeared again. I learned that I could just type the IP address directly and it would let me configure it. The hard disk still appeared in the disk window correctly, but I was unable to access it at all. Further screwing around and internet searching showed me that several others have the same issue without a solution. I turned my attention to the printer at this point.

The printer also was not recognized by the device automatically, so back to the internet I searched. I found a great website that showed me how to manually add a networked printer, step by step in windows xp. This worked absolutely beautifully! Thanks so much to whoever wrote the explanation. It can be had here:

http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1004.html

After several other attempts to connect the hard disk, including losing everything and having to re-install it all, I have officially given up. I suppose getting the internet and the printer to work wirelessly with my laptop is enough of a victory. I am just amazed at how much trouble the APE has caused so many people, without being addressed by apple.

I have spent too much time on this to mess with networking the old desktop now. 80/20 rule!

APPLE AIRPORT EXTREME.

This Iomega MiniMax stackable external hard drive easily stacks with a multitude of Apple products.
I’d Love to get one to add 1TB of capacity to my Apple Airport Extreme.
I was looking for an external drive to make my own home network and host all of my multimedia files on it.
That way anyone that connects my network has instant access to all my media.
I found quite a few inexpensive drives but nothing was as visually appealing as this Iomega drive.

“Its compact, stackable, design provides maximum storage to manage, organize and protect your digital photos, music and movies in stylish simplicity.
The drive is also expandable with a three-port FireWire and three-port USB 2.0 integrated hub to help you go with the flow!
Save up to 4,000,000 photos, 18,500 hours of music, or 1500 hours of video.” Thats quite a bit of space! Amazon.com has it on sale for a little over $120.

It doesn’t show up when you search the support site. It’s a pretty hefty download, but it seemed to work for me.

Time Capsule.

For my 50th post on Mintz’s Words, I wanted to talk about net promoter scores and my experience with Apple.

That one simple question drives business today. It is the reason for the proliferation of social networking among companies and has MBA toting business leaders obsessed with landing in the 9-10 point range. At that point the customer practically sells your product for you. The companies with the highest NPS are likely some of the best. These are your Googles, your VWs, your Snapples and Kashis. These are more than jus companies: they are cultures.

Whether you belong to the PC society or the Nike new world order, you brand loyalty says something about you. There us a lingo, a logo, and a love for these products, which that one simple question, (would you recommend our product to a friend?) reveals. Will you promote that company’s product and in essence, do their marketing work for them?

This is how I feel about Apple: despite the high price point, close systemness ( anti- Linux), and Starbuckian trendiness of their products, I love this company. They are my business influencer (what would apple do or wwad?).

These are the reasons I promote Apple:

1. Innovation – whenever I think about doing something new in business simply to be the first one in the pool, I remember that to be a game changer doesn’t always mean being the first one to suit up. There were plenty of MP3 players on the market before Apple changed the world forever with a little thing called the iPod.

2. Simplicity – when I bought my first Macbook, Wonder Woman was still PC user and worried that the switch would confuse her. Nearly three years later when it became time to buy our next computer we didn’t even consider looking at anything that didn’t come from our favorite “fruit company.”

3. Attention to Detail – there are just little things that make Apple products superior. For example, in the default PDF viewing program, there is a little feature called “Quartz Fileter,” which allows you to compress the PDF to minimal file size without losing much quality (I recently reduced a 15MB file needed to complete my application for the August 18th Nefesh B’Nefesh Charter Flight to 216KB using this method). This obviates the need for $30 PDF compression programs that many in the legal field are so fond of like PDF Shrink. Also, many of these features are intuitive, fill a user-need (not just extraneous add-ons), and like #2 are simple to use.

4. Product Design – the iPhone just feels right in my hand. Even when I’m walking the dog, with a double stroller packed with my two kids, I can use one hand to scroll through email. Reading on this compact device has changed my world (as the name of this blog implies, I am a word junky and read at every opportunity). Now, I don’t have to lug multiple books around on trips, I just download to the iPhone and enjoy holding my little e-reader (why anyone would want a Kindle is beyond me).

5. Relavance – Apple is never content to just sit around and wait for the next thing to happen. While the record and movie industry battled Napster they built iTunes. As court battles raged on over whether cable providers could store content in a cloud accessible to subscribers at anytime via their cable service, they came out with Apple TV. There is always something cooking in the Apple labs and it ain’t strudel or turnover.

All-in-all you can say we are a happy Apple family. Our latest acquisitions, a 24-inch iMac and an Airport extreme are just the latest in our ongoing relationship with this company. The iMac we got as a certified refurbish from the Apple Store, was cheaper than anywhere else I have looked, and came with a 1-year warranty. The Airport extreme wireless router we got from an EXCELLENT site for Apple products: MacMall.com for almost 40% off the retail price, brand new (sealed in box). While the high price point of Apple products can be off putting for the uninitiated, those of us loyal customers who put Apple in the 9 to 10 NPS range will always tell you, it is worth the extra money. I’d rather save for another year and buy an older Apple product than rush out to get the latest PC, (although I must admit that Windows XP 2007 on my work computer is a fantastic step up from previous MS attempts).

I just got my Apple TV, and after spending some time with it, I found it is an anti-climatic gift, but will offer long term enjoyment. I know many people recommend hacking the Apple TV to have many other functions, but I opted for the smaller model since I already have a Mac Mini set up in the bedroom with a Drobo to store all of my music, movies and TV shows.

Setup unfortunately was not as easy as it is with most Apple devices.I found that there is a incompatibility with iTunes 8.1.1 where the Apple TV will only show up if i turn off iTunes sharing. Additionally I am having problems connecting the Apple TV to my Airport Extreme 802.11n router, and had to instead connect it to my slower Airport Express router.

Although the Airport Express is much slower, I found that all my shows and photos finished syncing by the next morning. This is great, and the Apple TV will stay in constant contact with iTunes to sync the latest shows and movies I download. Should you get one? This depends on your budget. For most people, I would actually recommend the Mac Mini over the Apple TV, since you can connect external storage to the Mini without hacking the device. The Apple TV is really for people who already have a PC / Mac that they use to download movies and music on to and they are looking to extend the connection to the TV. It not the perfect solution for everyone, but it turned out to fill a need for me.

Perhaps the most notable update is the Mac Mini, which has been completely overhauled to feature five USB ports, a Mini DisplayPort and DVI plugs for dual monitor support. All this running on 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo processor and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card. To read the official pres release, click here.

Me/Back To My Mac.

I don’t think I have the patience for this, so I’ll make this fast. A Yahoo! Finance article contains so many errors that I’m getting a tad annoyed. Let’s start with the wrong verb here:

And some missing information here:

Apple has announced something, but I’m not sure what. It probably has something to do with the AirPort Extreme. That’s my guess. I’m also guessing that the author meant to include a comma or two in “Oh, that’s all, Apple?”

Missing punctuation bugs me. Like the hyphen omitted after BFR to indicate that the computers are BFR-free and PVC-free:

Unless you’re talking about the credit card, visa is a common noun:

And taxpayer is one word, not two:

Here’s that Visas thing again:

And there it is again!

But let’s end on something lighthearted, shall we? Like this typo:
