Ever since my Dad bought us an unlimited Sun Broadband wireless, my sister and I sometimes fight over who gets to use the modem for the time-being. I later discovered later that it was possible for a Mac(I have a white Macbook, OSX Leopard) to share its Internet Connection via Network Devices.

Ways of Sharing Internet Connection via Airport:

1. Sharing the DHCP connection.

on Mac:

Open System Preferences.

Click on the “Sharing” icon

Click on the “Internet Sharing” item list.

On the “Internet Sharing” item list, make sure that there’s a written name(i.e. ruzette) in the Computer Name field, selected source of connection (i.e. HUAWEI Mobile) in the Share your Connection from Combo Box and check the Airport Check Box in the To Computers Using list.

On the “Airport Options”, make sure that the “Enable encryption (using WEP)” remains unchecked.

Check the “Internet Sharing” check box.

on Windows XP:

On your Wireless Connections, Click on the Network name provided on the Mac.

Click Connect.

If it is not entirely connected (i.e, Limited Connection), go to Command Line Prompt (Start->Run->Type “cmd” -> OK) then type “ipconfig /renew”(It renews all your adapters’ connections). Hit the Enter key.

2. Sharing the WEP connection.

On the “Airport Options”, check the “Enable encryption (using WEP)” box. Set the WEP-length to 40-bit.

Now this is the fun and vital part. After setting the WEP-length to 40-bit. You can only create hexadecimal passwords, meaning that only numbers from 0-9 and letters from A to F are allowed. Also, make sure that the “$” (dollar sign) is in front of the password (i.e. “$09342ABF”). Click OK. (Any combination using the mentioned numbers and letters is allowed. )

Check the “Internet Sharing” check box.

on Windows:

On your Wireless Connections, Click on the Network name provided on the Mac.

Click Connect.

If it is not entirely connected (i.e, Limited Connection), Right click on the “Wireless Connection” icon, Click on Properties.

On the Properties window, click on the “Wireless Networks” tab. Select the Network name on the Mac then select the “Configure” button. Check the “Data encryption (WEP enabled)” and the “Network Authentication (Shared mode)” boxes. Enter the network key we provided on the Mac except that we remove the dollar sign(“$”) in front of the key.

Make sure that the “Enable IEEE 802.x authentication for this network” remains unchecked in the Authentication tab.

Click OK.

Restart your connection if it still does not work.

Spring Hill (70N) For fishing and picnics Two recent trips to Spring Hill airport in Sterling, PA pr

Spring Hill (70N)
For fishing and picnics

Two recent trips to Spring Hill airport in Sterling, PA proved to be both eventful and learning experiences (when aren’t they?).

Spring Hill sits upon a shelf beside a plateau in the poconos. Given the right conditions, this tiny airport is an extreme challenge. There is a hill at the southwest end of the runway that is severely steep. I don’t suggest taking off from runway 23 with a loaded airplane in the summer just as I don’t suggest trying to climb that hill on foot. Ropes should be required. If you do happen to use the runway, expect the winds to drift you off centerline even before you get to treetop level. I have yet to land on 5. I’ll submit a PIREP if I ever do. Night landings on 5 are not authorized. The threshold sits back 400′ from the runway’s edge (gee, I wonder why?).

On the opposite node, separated by almost 2500′, there is a lack of earth. Not far beyond that is Route 84. If you’re coming from the south, you won’t see the airport until after you pass the hill and spot 84. AVP approach was very helpful.

The water table is inches below the surface and hosts a very large but relatively shallow pond. If you like fishing, bring your rod. I can guarantee that there are fish, but don’t expect to actually catch a lot. The pond contains carp (big fish) but the most practical way of catching them is probably with a bow and arrow. I totally expect to try that sometime. Small bass and other panfish live there, too.

A moderate size pavillion is a great place to have lunch or wait out a thunderstorm. I saw horseshoe pits, but no horseshoes (or horses, but I did see a flock of turkeys). There is plenty of room to play catch or frisbee. Don’t try football unless you like being tackled onto exposed tree roots. Bring everything that you’ll need to satisfy yourself. There are absolutely no conveniences. That means drinking water or restrooms.

Other services do not exist either. Finding someone to help you will take a while. I had the displeasure of pushing 79V into a tiedown when the clouds got thick. Of course, the soil was soft and after my dad and I pushed it in the muck, we discovered that the ropes were too short. It took much longer to get her back out. All those horses under the cowl couldn’t even do the job. I finally got someone with a small tractor mower and a rope to pull 79V out. Searched out a better tiedown spot and tucked her in to wait out the weather. The best tiedown was the end of the row closest to the runway (for future reference). You may have to tie two ropes together to make them reach.

Even without other luxuries, fuel is available. The airport is staffed only on weekdays. If you plan to go, I’d take these numbers with you: (as listed in the AFD and airnav.com) 570-242-5771 and 570-689-4040. I assume that the airport carries minimal insurance for a public use area, because they’ll ask you to sign a waiver (if they see you).

If you’re looking for a real short trip to enjoy the outdoors for a little while, Spring Hill is an excellent place to go. Whether you want to relax alongside the pond, take a walk and picnic, or just wish to challenge your skills, you now have some knowledge to make your experience a good one.

Little fact for the day: the airport is run by a man who invented the radon detector. His equipment is so sensitive, that it calibrates the calibrators.

The holidays are the season of sharing. And there is nothing more precious to bloggers and commenter

The holidays are the season of sharing. And there is nothing more precious to bloggers and commenters than one’s opinion. On Thanksgiving Eve, what could be more in tune with the holiday spirit than sharing one’s opinions?* There are several opportunities to comment on important plans and projects affecting Oakland, and thanks to email, your opinion can be shared even in the glow of tryptophan, with an unbuckled belt. Below are short summaries of major decisions seeking your input, with links and deadlines for comment.

Safeway on Claremont Environmental Impact Report

At a contentious meeting last week, the Planning Commission listened to public input on what should be studied as part of Safeway’s Environmental Impact Report for expanding their store at Claremont and College. Dozens of neighbors lined up to say that they don’t want outsiders coming to their neighborhood to do grocery shopping, and that somehow Rockridge’s small-shop character is best enhanced by a gigantic surface parking lot at a prominent intersection.

You can write a letter to Planning Staff and the Commission outlining what you think should be studied. If you support the new store, you could emphasize that the pedestrian impacts of the no-build option are important to study, and that study of land-use issues or impacts on all of North Oakland (as requested by some neighbors) is unnecessary. If you oppose the project, feel free to think of the craziest thing you can imagine, and ask that it be studied. You can find contact info for comment on the Planning Commission’s November 18 agenda (PDF).

Toll increase on Bay Area bridges

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission burns through billions like it’s monopoly money, and though constantly short-changing public transportation, can’t even manage its pet highway projects well. Thus, the MTC is facing a severe deficit for the seismic strengthening of many bridges, including the Bay Bridge. True to form, rather than look for more efficient solutions, the MTC just wants more money. Currently the Bay Area Toll Authority, which is more or less the same as the MTC, is seeking public comment on a toll rise for state-run bridges (eg, not the Golden Gate Bridge or Fruitvale Bridge). This would be the first toll increase in almost twenty years that would not be endorsed by voters and would not include funds for improving public transit. On the other hand, the MTC is considering congestion pricing, which is very efficient. Comments can be addressed to the Bay Area Toll Authority before Dec 21. And if you’d like to know more about why these toll increases are needed, consider donating to McSweeney’s Bay Bridge seismic retrofit investigation, pitched on Spot.us.

AC Transit Service Changes

V Smoothe has been covering AC Transit’s service changes extensively for several months, and today writes that the final adjustment plan, released last week, is a triumph for careful consideration of public input, providing a model for other agencies. By contrast, BART slashed off-peak service 25% without even a ridership survey, and the Oakland City Council tries their darnedest not to implement inevitable service cuts. Be that as it may, the final service adjustment plan is out, and it’s open for comment. Highlights include improving service along the 51 corridor by splitting the line in two at Rockridge (which I do not like at all), and expanding service to educational destinations in the East Hills, including new service to Skyline High School, the Oakland Zoo, and the Chabot Space and Science Center. You can provide comment online, or in person at a meeting on December 1.

Union Pacific Railroad Right-of-Way Feasibility Study

Union Pacific Railroad is in negotiations to sell its “Oakland Subdivision” right-of-way to Alameda County, which would use a portion of it to recreate passenger rail connections on the Dumbarton Bridge. Union Pacific would like to sell the entire subdivision, though, not just the South County portion. The County is therefore looking at possible uses of the subdivision, which in Oakland mostly runs below the BART tracks along San Leandro St. The main thrust of the study is to make bicycle and pedestrian paths, though I don’t find the underside of BART tracks to be very scenic. In any event, it’s an interesting idea, and planners are looking for public comment. They are particularly interested in whether bicyclists would prefer Class I (grade-separated) or Class II (on-street) bike lanes as part of the project. Check out the study and leave your comments, at Alameda County Public Works (it’s the first item under Community Updates).

* Sharing your time or food tomorrow is perhaps even a better way to celebrate the holidays. I’m having a hard time finding information about volunteer opportunities in Oakland tomorrow – if a reader knows of a volunteer opportunity, please leave it in the comments.

Yesterday, I accidentally opened the Ryanair page and found they were offering £2 one way tickets for journeys in November through to March. The tickets went really quick and by the time I got home there weren’t any left for the routes I was interested in.

I started to dig around to see how come I missed this great offer. Even though I’m subscribed to Ryanair’s newsletter I got no heads-up for it. I checked on their Press Release page but there was nothing on it either.

So it’s not just me. 66 million Ryanair passengers, some of whom are surely subscribed to the newsletter and others who check their PR website regularly didn’t know of the sell-out. Why?

The only reasonable explanation I can offer is that it’s one of Ryanair’s marketing tactics. News spread quicker by word of mouth then via any press releases, newsletters or any other marketing campaigns. Moreover, it’s reaaaaaaaally cheap.

I continued to wonder how this may work. Surely, Michael O’leary isn’t going to make it easy for us to figure out when he’s planning the next sale.

I went through all Ryanair’s special offers press releases and put their dates on a Google Calendar.

So I went ahead and analysed the press release calendar pattern quickly. Here’s what I found:

Ryanair Press Release Analysis

Almost 60% of all Ryanair special offer announcements were made on a Monday or Tuesday, with just over 20% made on a Thursday. They have never made any announcements on a Saturday, Wednesdays and Sundays being the least popular days when nearly 10% of their announcements were made.

The period analysed was between February 2007 and November 2009 as their announcements don’t go any further than the beginning of 2007.

Very interesting is the immense growth of press release popularity in the second half of this year when almost 60% of all special offer announcements were made – 34 out of 58.

The press release pattern seams very erratic. Some of the offers were prompted by bad publicity, e.g. ‘Ryanair gives away 1.1m FREE seats BBCPanorama lies’ (O’leary beautifully manipulated the whole Panorama crew who did publish his interview on their website).

Right, so what are we gonna do with the findings? There are a few tips we could bear in mind:

- don’t wait for the newsletter to announce any big sales

- they’ll come unexpectedly on Monday or Tuesday

- if not check on a Thursday

- you’re safe to go for a pint on a Friday because there will be no announcements on a Saturday

- Sundays should be quiet too, with only a handful of less important announcements made

Finally, judging from the popularity of the offers yesterday if there will be a sale tickets will go within a few hours. So be prepared to buy when the time comes.

I’d love to be able to provide any alternative analyses of this type but unfortunately weren’t able to find any. Looks like Ryanair’s not very popular with academics.

Anyway, hope this helps a little bit. Keep your eyes open and let me know if you spot any trends. And any big sales of course!

As many people get ready to travel today, I thought it would be fitting to share a site I tripped across. Ever wonder what happens when the TSA takes your knife, tool, scissors, etc? For some of it, the answer is:

They Sell It!

Yes, that’s correct. They sell it on EBay. Sometimes they offer pretty good deals on individual knives or tools. Sometimes they put it in a box and sell 27 pounds of it at once. Personally, I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it’s an opportunity for someone who has had a knife confiscated to potentially replace it at a low cost. That’s pretty good.

On the other hand, I wonder if there are other items that have been confiscated or lost/left behind at the checkpoint that aren’t for sale. What if I forget an iPod or other piece of technology? Do they auction that, or does someone at the checkpoint keep it?

Also, considering the amount of confusion I typically see at checkpoints, I wonder if there is even more stuff that is out there? They’ve only got three pages of knives up. Isn’t there more?

Go check it out for yourself at their eBay seller site. And as the TSA says, remember 3-1-1…

Three conflicting ways they’ll tell you how to handle the same instruction

One sole agent paying attention in a meaningful way

One lane open while the others are closed

If you’re flying today… Good luck!

The UK’s popular East Midlands Airport has set out its stall for UK travellers looking for an

The UK’s popular East Midlands Airport has set out its stall for UK travellers looking for an easy start to their holiday this autumn and winter. Like other UK regional airports in recent years, East Midlands Airport has seen substantial growth and development. This is in a great degree due to the development of new routes by low cost carriers to new destinations. But it is also due to the demands of discerning travellers, who realise increasingly that no package holiday should begin with an exhausting and expensive trip to the so-called “hub” airports in the south or north-west of England.

As the credit crunch begins to bite, such considerations of cost as well as convenience will intensify the need for travellers to look at all aspects of their budget. Hence they will be selecting destinations based on available routes from their local airport to save fuel on driving to a far-away airport, or hotels costs for an overnight stay before departure.

Additionally, the price of fuel is already causing airlines such as Ryanair (who have seen exponential growth in the past decade) to cut back on selected routes. How this will affect customer choice and the ability of some destinations to continue to attract UK visitors is yet to be seen, but experience shows that destinations without a traditional following will be hard-pressed to keep customer loyalty when low-cost travel facilities start to dry up in coming seasons.

Thus in the case of East Midlands Airport, popular but less mainstream locations are being heavily promoted, alongside traditional summer and winter holiday destinations. These include Ryanair routes such as Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands and Faro in Portugal – both popular for traveller traditionally seeking extended summer sun where the weather tends to stay good through to early October. And in the case of Faro in particular – where days of less favourable weather can be compensated by excellent cultural attractions.

Also promoted heavily are trips to Prague from October. The Czech Republic’s capital city has been enjoying a massive boost in UK travel – not necessarily simply due to the growth in stag weekends, but also due to the easy accessibility from regional airports at prices which allow travellers to afford to grab several weekend breaks each year in addition to their main holidays. Destinations such as Prague are likely to continue to attract business for this reason.

Another destination which has always attracted a big UK following is Bulgaria. Again, hardly mainstream like Spain or Greece for Summer holidays, or Austria and France for ski breaks, the destination nevertheless has a loyalty amongst the discerning, who have long since discovered the excellent value for money to be had in this destination in the South East of Europe, with its blue flag beaches, sunny weather and high quality hotels. For the winter, of course, Bulgaria also features its three skiing resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. These are perfect for beginner and intermediate skiers, with Bansko and Borovets being most suitable for advanced skiers. All three resorts have a wide choice of excellent hotels and apartments and excellent apres ski including restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Hence, travellers looking for a ski destination served locally at East Midlands Airport are well served.

Thus East Midlands, along with other UK regional airports, are pushing hard to keep variety, value and choice alive at times when the challenges for holidaymakers and businesses alike are plain to see.

…(and the beginning of the travel-madness that marks the season, like so many footprints in the snow

…(and the beginning of the travel-madness that marks the season, like so many footprints in the snow (?) outside a store with a fantastic Black Friday sale) … It’s my long-promised review of Pittsburgh International Airport!

What could be more exciting?!

I’ve made my way through a lot of airports over the years. Most of the time the quality of my experience has been directly proportional to the smoothness of the flooring and the clarity of the signage as I sprint from one gate to the next in the latest event of the making-my-connection-Olympics (FYI – I rarely medal).

But once in awhile I have the chance to just hang out. Take a leisurely stroll. And it’s times like these that I appreciate the little touches, like a food court that’s open when passengers are around, no matter how late it might be (Hey Anchorage International, I’m looking in your direction!).

Traveling this holiday? This could be you!

Over the years I’ve paid attention to tips about stopovers. I still remember the time I sat by a roof-top pool in Miami, the 5-hour layover between flights made much less painful by the base-tan creating Florida sunshine. Sleepinginairports.net has been bookmarked on every internet browser I’ve ever installed (and proved invaluable in my days as a nomadic college student).

Long before I set up shop in the Steel City, PIA was the stuff of legend. I heard tales of the AirMall, the mystical place where a piece of pizza could not only be had for less than $10, but it might actually be available for the same price as you’d pay at a regular mall!

As someone who once paid the equivalent of $20USD for a vegetable sandwich on a train, the idea of normal pricing for captive audiences sat very will with me indeed.

Of course, Pittsburgh’s airport has many of the same elements as most – parking shuttles and security lines are pretty much the same wherever you go. But there are some things that make the airport stand out.

You can almost feel the free Wi-fi in the air.

Free Wi-Fi. You’d think in this brave new world every port and terminal would offer weary travelers with three hours to kill the chance to plunk down wherever there’s space to check their e-mail at no charge. But with the captive audience comes the captive cash-grab (Chicago O’Hare, I’m looking in your direction). Seriously, I am not going to pay $7 just to entertain myself by updating my Facebook status. So kudos to you PIA, for offering Wi-Fi the way it was intended – Free!

The Aforementioned AirMall. Since I’m already used to schlepping a purse I could carry a small child in on my errands, lugging a suitcase while shopping isn’t much of a challenge. And since I can easily spend a day inside a shopping mall, whiling away the time between flights is no problem thanks to real stores with real prices in a realistic mall environment. The only downside is making sure my carry-on still meets dimension requirements after a visit to (insert store-of-your-choice-since-I’m-not-going-to-do-a-commercial plug-and/or-expose-my-shoe-addiction here).

It Has A Dinosaur. Shopping not your thing? Then gaze in wonder upon the terrible lizard cheerfully advertising the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s collection. While I have been in other airports that have dinos on display, ours is the best. Because I say so. Also, if I wanted to learn more about the creature of the late Cretaceous, I could simply open my laptop and log on. Using the free Wi-fi. Because knowledge should be free.

Still looking in your direction, Chicago.

So on Monday i went to the airport with my mum and my auntie to collect my grandma and cousin. They landed at 16.15pm but it took them ages to come out! After waiting and waiting and more waiting, we finally spotted them, and headed to my other auntie’s house to dump their stuff.

We then made a quick move to a restaurant for dinner since we knew my grandma and cousin must have been tired and hungry. We took them to our favourite Kor/Jap restauarant K&J in New Malden. My grandma loved the gold california roll we ordered, since she really loves eating tobiko. This restaurant is really generous when it comes to tobiko and gave us loads of it, my grandma was so delighted by this because she said back in malaysia they only give you a tiny tiny amount of it, and that it isnt as fresh in malaysia.

After dinner we dropped them back at my auntie’s house and stayed for a bit. My cousin ended up falling asleep on the sofa in a really weird position haha, i wish i took a photo of it, it was so funny. It was really nice to see them again since i haven’t been back to malaysia for 2 and a half years now, my little cousin is not so little anymore and has grown so much taller! She’s only 12 but is at my shoulders already, she clearly takes after my uncle who is super tall and will probably end up taller than me one day hehe.

Later that night my parents took me back to uni, i really wish i didn’t have to come back since i would much prefer to spend my time with my cousin and grandma. They all went out for lunch, shopping and dinner on tuesday and visited Richmond park on wednesday, i really wish i could have gone with them, since they’re only here until 30th december and i wont get to see them much since i can only go home during the weekends =.=. I never knew i would miss my little cousin so much, its actually kinda a new feeling for me, its sorta odd. She annoys me to no end sometimes, but i miss talking to her, its really weird.

But nevermind, i will be seeing them this weekend, so will try and make the best out of the little time i get to spend with them. Anyways, must sign off now, need to go and do more recruiting tomorrow since it’s thursday again!

Goodnight world,

Today was the first day I’ve been back home since I moved to LA in August. It’s been weird; driving the same roads I used to drive everyday, going to the same places socialize and eat, it all seems so odd. The more things stay the same, the more they change. Unfortunately not everyone I used to see when I live in the bay area still lives here. It’s nights like this when I wish my best friend hadn’t moved to Israel. On a brighter note, I once again realized why I love traveling so much. People in the airport have so much expression and such different stories to tell. I was able to snap this shot off in LAX as the subject noticed I was taking a picture; his glare really makes for quite the expressive photo.

Hoteliers spend tremendous time and energy looking for strategic ways to utilize technology to improve their operations and drive financial performance. What many fail to look at is that the hotel itself usually sits in the middle of a large parking facility. This facility often takes up as much real estate as the hotel itself, but because parking is outside of the core focus of the industry, parking technology is rarely part of any strategic capital or IT plan. At Niche Advisors, when we travel to visit our clients we typically find that they use no parking technology at all or if so, it is the most poorly maintained, unsophisticated and outdated product on site. This article will explore how some of the latest advancements in the parking industry can help hotels capitalize on unrealized profit.

Most hotels which charge for parking either charge on the honor system, or have an outdated or unsophisticated parking access and revenue control system (PARCS). Honor system hotels simply rely on their guests to tell the truth when asked at check in if they are parking a car. If the guest says yes, a code is added to the their folio and the guest is automatically charged each night. Because there are no gates or control of the lot, the guest does not have to be forthcoming. We find that most hotels using the honor system fail to capture revenue from 40-70% of the vehicles parked in their lots. In addition, without gates, there is no effective way to collect parking revenue from day visitors or catering clients. Honor system hotels who invest in PARCS will see a very quick return on their investment.

Hey folks, well today is a pretty shitty day, I got my period. I woke up early got all dressed up nice straightened my hair, put make up on because I had an interview to go to.
Well it’s a bit far but still. My interview was at a Lexus dealership . It’s at erin mills. Anyway, so I did all that and I’m pretty sure they don’t want me because to finish off the interview the guy said ” Well, we’re still in the process of interviewing other candidates , but you will certainly hear from us if you meet the qualifications .( With those cynic grins on their faces. ) ” Which translated into realistic understanding means, thanks for coming but you’re not hired. So, I need a job. Bad.

On my way to the interview I was passing Pearson airport and it was the coolest thing, a plane was landing and one had taken off and was flying over Highway 427… IT was wicked , I got stuck in a trance for 5 seconds or so and nearly didn’t see the people breaking in front of me.

All I could think was… Where was that plane headed… And wished I were on it. Sometimes I have the urge to just drive in and ask if there are any standby tickets, and just get on a plane to god knows where.

Oh well.. Where is that investor!?

On Sunday I met up with a couple people with the Washington Photo Safari club at National Airport.

On Sunday I met up with a couple people with the Washington Photo Safari club at National Airport. Pretty good time. I leaned a lot about my camera and how to take low light camera shots. I wish I’d had a tripod… but, ya know. Whatevs. I’ll get there eventually. In the end, a lot of my shots have to be very mobile and a tripod is a bit of a downer, but if I keep up with architecture photography, then I should pick one up. I figured I’d try out architecture since I’d never had much experience with it. Pretty awesome, but I still like the high pace of protests and photojournalism.

Anyway, I started work on Monday. Spent the day in orientation and stuff. Came home and saw New Moon. Teeeeeee. Teeeheeeeeeee! Oh, dont get me wrong, the dialog sucked pretty hard, and the cuts were choppy and not at all seamless. But, ya know, I’m a twihard and this is my crack. So, yeah. Step off.

Tomorrow I get off work at 9:30 am. Yay! I have to pick up a cake from the Whole Foods and then bring it over to my parent’s house along with the Rockband stuff. All in preparation for the all encompassing turkey day. It’ll be great.

Anywhoo, thats life so far. Enjoy some shots from the airport!
