I went with a friend and his daughter to the Airshow at Iruma Base earlier this month, and I finally got around to uploading the best photos I took.  It was my first airshow with my digital SLR, so, my shots aren’t the best.  I found it pretty challenging to center the photos while the zoom was up close (and the planes were moving so fast).

Anyway, here are a few of my favourites -

Obligatory cargo plane… I love cargo planes, but i just don’t have the patience to memorize anything about them.  I just think they look cool.

The big display of the day was Blue Impulse – the Japanese Self Defence Force’s precision flying team-

High winds.  There’s nothing worse for a bunch of enthusiastic (ok fanatical) pilots all ready to put on an amazing show on a sunny Masterton day.  Cancelling the display is the hardest decision – you should have seen the glum faces at the aeroclub on Saturday night.  But hey, at least all the planes are still in one piece ready to fly again on 23rd January…

The latest addition to the Vintage Aviator’s squadron – a replica WW1 German Albatros D Va  – was on show but could only taxi because of the winds. There are only 2 originals in the world, both in museums.  Photos coming soon.

De vijfde Internationale Airshow op het vliegveld van Ursel, Oost-Vlaanderen ging door in de zomer van 1993.

Eén van de vele aanwezige toestellen was de MUG helikopter West-Vlaanderen. Toen één van de bezoekers onwel werd in het begin van de airshow werd dit toestel ingezet voor evacuatie. Ook diverse leden van het Rode Kruis (in de toenmalige uniformen) ontfermden zich over de hulpbehoevende persoon.

6 novembre 2009 – La Regione Campania a Dubai AIRSHOW Vulcaner esporrà il suo A-Viator. Il Salone Aeronautico di Dubai è una manifestazione che si tiene ogni due anni negli Emirati Arabi Uniti, è promossa dal Governo dell’Emirato in collaborazione con il Dipartimento dell’Aviazione Civile, l’aeroporto internazionale di Dubai e le Forze armate. L’edizione 2009 del Salone è prevista dal prossimo 15 al 19 novembre all’Airport Expo di Dubai e molte le aziende italiane del settore che parteciperanno all’evento con stand o chalet . Per la prima volta sarà presente la Regione Campania che ha previsto la partecipazione ad AirShow tra le attività promozionali finanziate con la delibera regionale 1373 del 6 agosto. Anche se l’Assessorato Regionale alle Attività Produttive non ha previsto un bando di partecipazione per le PMI regionali, una quindicina di aziende campane saranno presenti all’evento, tra loro Vulcaner si è attrezzata con uno stand e con un’area espositiva per il suo velivolo A-Viator. 6 novembre 2009 – Il Sud Africa cancella l’ordine per otto velivoli da trasporto militare Airbus A400M Il portavoce del governo sudafricano Themba Maseko ha spiegato che la commessa è annullata a causa «della grande crescita dei costi e per l’incapacità del fornitore a consegnare l’aereo nei tempi convenuti».

La notizia ufficiale era attesa da giorni, dopo che le dichiarazioni di Sipho Thomo, A.d. di ARMSCOR, l’organizzazione sudafricana per l’acquisizione di materiali per la Difesa, avevano anticipato la decisione del governo sudafricano di rinunciare ai velivoli dopo che la crescita dei costi era stata valutata da 17 a 47 miliardi di rand (circa 6 miliardi e mezzo di dollari). 3 novembre 2009- Alenia Aeronautica, Cassa Integrazione ordinaria a Tessera. Il sindacato rende noto che la Direzione di Alenia Aeronautica ha comunicato che dopo Foggia in arrivo anche a Venezia la Cassa integrazione ordinaria, riguarderà inizialmente 80 persone a gennaio, 300 da giugno.

3 novembre 2009- Aeroporto di Capodichino, risponde alla crisi e si attrezza per il futuro. Lo scalo napoletano è ancora nel pieno della bufera, a settembre i dati di traffico confermano il calo dei movimenti e del traffico passeggeri e gli enti locali decidono per la Metropolitana all’interno dello scalo.

Entro il 2013 sarà attiva una stazione della metropolitana all’interno dell’aeroporto di Napoli Capodichino. Bloccato il nuovo aeroporto internazionale di Grazzanise, per Capodichino partono progetti di ristrutturazione e si sbloccano i fondi Cipe.Segue

Boeing ha deciso affidare allo stabilimento canadese di Winnipeg la produzione di molte componenti in materiali compositi del 787 Dreamliner. Il costruttore americano, infatti, progetterà e produrrà nella provincia di Manitoba i wing-to-body fairing, il main landing gear doors, e il Vertical Fin Fairing del programma 787.Segue

2 novembre 2009- L’Avio firma un contratto di 5 anni con Precision Air

L’Avio ha reso noto di aver sottoscritto un contratto con la compagnia aerea tanzaniana Precision Air per la revisione dei motori turboprop della sua flotta ATR. Il contratto – dice Avio – è con la formula “time and material” ed è in esclusiva per cinque anni. L’azienda, però, non ne precisa il valore. Segue

A few days ago Missives from Marx tagged me in a post called You Would Never Guess Meme. I’m it. Apparently. MfM wrote:

What could compare to Missives’ philosophical admissions (confessions?)?

Well, despite my awful liberal politics and what not, I like military and vintage airplanes. I really wish I could get my pilot’s licence. Alas, my eyes are so bad now I really hate even driving…

It all started when I was a kid living up at Lesser Slave Lake in northern Alberta in the 1960s. My best friend’s dad had a charter air service ferrying people to and fro from the various oil and forestry installations, so I spent a lot of time out at the airport. Ended up getting a few rides, too!

One summer, the forest fires were quite bad and a lot of fire fighting aircraft were brought in, and it was an impressive site. In those days, there were not built for the purpose water bombers. The planes were ex-WW 2 military aircraft converted for the purpose.

They were everything a young boy could like, BIG, LOUD and powerful, with an impressive war record too.

There were three kinds I remember:

“Grumman Avenger AS Mk. 3M, 881 Anti-Submarine Squadron, HMCS Magnificent, Royal Canadian Navy, 1950-1952.”

The Avenger was built in WW 2 and used by the U.S. Navy and other allied forces for torpedo attacks on ships and for bombing. For a single engine airplane they are huge, and dwarfed the little light planes out at the airport.

A Consolidated Catalina flying boat. According to the Wikipedia caption, this one was made in 1944 under licence in Canada and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (that called the type the “Canso”). These are gawky looking things, and are simply glorious. Because they could land on lakes and take up water that way, they were probably the most effective of the planes used in the campaign against the fires that summer.

A few of these North American B25 Mitchells operated out of Slave Lake that summer, and I thought they looked the coolest.

I spent a lot of my youth sticking together model airplanes, and I love going to aviation museums. Oddly, though, I don’t like airshows. The damn announcers get on my nerves. I can’t stand people on horrible sound systems wittering on and on (sports commentators are worse), SHUT UP AND JUST GET ON WITH THE SHOW!

Anyway, I haven’t been to an airshow in years. There is one in Lethbridge every few years, but it never seems to fall on a weekend I am free or willing to put up with the heat (August in Lethbridge can be pretty hot), or the damn announcers. When I go, it rains.

I’ve been to Duxford England and Biggen Hill and seen the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight a few times. Here are a few snaps of the Lethbridge airshow from 2005, the last one I went to with a camera. Most of the pictures I took were of black, blurred dots streaking across the sky… I’m a crap photographer.

I should know what sort of plane this is, but I don’t. Sue me.

Two weeks ago was the Miramar Airshow, a big military show at the base 20 minutes away from here.
It was really amazing to see the jets that close. They even dropped bombs and shot with tanks, I think for the americans here it was the highlight of the year

Karsten and Philipp (friends from germany) were here for 4 days and Jan was here till Tuesday…

To celebrate Chris’ birthday I took him on a surprise trip down to Bealton, VA to the Flying Circus where we watched an airshow and took a ride in an open cockpit bi-plane. It was a gorgeous day and you could see clear across the state to the mountains. Our pilot gave us a great ride and even threw in a Wing-Over – wheeee! Chris was totally surprised and loved it!

Germany: nice country, shit food, people are ok.

The airshow was pretty good though – it’s good to get among the competition and find out what they’re up to Spent a lot of time on the Mallaghan stand (aircraft loaders, toilet carts luggage handlers – not really our side of things) ‘cos they had Guinness on tap which was very nice…

Weather was great out there – 26 degrees yesterday so glad I managed to grab a free pair of shades from Dianne at the Semmco stand (gave her a stuffed cow in return).

What other freebies did I get? not many actually – some chocolate, Jagermeister, stuffed donkey…that’s about it…

And Corina arranged for me to goto Italy next week for testing in Rome – she’s arranged a flight out Monday morning and back in the evening so I’ve got to be at Stansted for 4am, and land back just before midnight – I’m sure she doesn’t realise this yet – but that’s a fucking long day!

Better get on with some work – just going through the emails is gonna take all morning…

So, what could be more brilliant if I could go to a place to see an real closeup airplane and actually watch them fly right above your head? I felt so fortunate to attend the annual Miramar Airshow, the biggest one in the nation this last Sunday.

And Blue Angels was awesome! Everybody waited for them and they didn’t let us down at all!!!!!

base in bici, c’era una fiumara di gente a prendere i pulmann!!!

Tornado sempre di spessore con un passaggio basso a mach 0.9 da paura , EF2000 potente pulito e Frecce Tricolori… be sempre precise, a video del PC puoi usare il righello per valutare la formazione, e non ero neppure a centro pista!!!

Sern-Li dropped us an e-mail out of the blue to tell us of the airshow that’s happening at TUDM, Subang Airport. I took the opportunity to get the camera out and go berserk with the photos! I must say, the Russian plane was quite impressive. Sounds nice too. Cobra move was nice to see live!

Heisann hoppsann! Her i USA går alt fortsatt bra. Jeg tenkte jeg kunne fortelle dere om de siste helgene som har vært siden begge har vært veldig interessante og innholdsrike.

Forrige helg dro jeg på AFS orientering i Eureka. Jeg startet turen på fredag da Diana, en av de AFS frivillige, kom og plukket meg opp her i Redding. Deretter kjørte vi østover til Weaverville (1 times kjøretur) der jeg skulle møte Isabell, en tysk AFSer, og vertsmoren hennes. Fredagskvelden dro vi på en High School fotballkamp (amerikansk). Dette var en ny opplevelse for meg og det var veldig interessant. Hjemmelaget, Trinity High School, vant mot et lag fra Redding 42-0. Nå har jeg også begynt å forstå reglene for fotball så det er faktisk interessant å følge med. Etter at vi hadde vært på fotballkamp dro vi hjem til Isabell og sov over natten der.Om morgenen dro jeg til Eureka med Isabell og vertsmoren hennes.

AFS orienteringen var også veldig morsomt. Vi fikk høre historier fra tidligere AFS studenter og møte de andre AFS studentene som er i USA for øyeblikket. Vi hadde også skuespill der vi skulle vise kulturforskjeller eller noe som var uvant for oss. Jeg og ei italiensk jente tok for oss “amerikanere som stiller dumme spørsmål”. Dette var veldig morsomt siden vi kunne overdrive skikkelig og stille spørsmål slik som: “Så hvordan står det til i Afrika da?” til utvekslingsstudenten fra Italia. Etter at orienteringen var ferdig ble jeg med Diana tilbake til Weaverville og lå over hos henne.

Dagen etter skulle jeg bli med Diana og hjelpe til med en minnestund i en park. Dette var for moren til en av studentene som Diana hadde vært lærer for. Dette var en veldig ny og interessant opplevelse for meg. Selve minnestunden var veldig religiøst preget og presten snakket veldig mye om hvordan hun nå var i himmelen og så ned på oss. Noe annet som var uvant for meg var at tilskuerne som hørte på ofte kom med spontane utrop slik som “Yes Lord!” og “Amen”. Jeg ville ha sett på dette som uhøflig, men jeg tror ikke det var tilfelle der. Etter minneseremonien kjørte hun meg tilbake til Redding.

Uka som var har vært forholdsvis vanlig. Vi har begynt å pakke og gå over utstyr til jakt. Det har også blitt en del vedkløyving og vedbrotting. Gårsdagen var et lite avbrekk fra alt dette. Da var vi nemlig på flystevne. Dette var noe helt nytt for meg og det var kjempemorsomt. Hele flyplassen var full av mennesker og det var utstilte fly og helikoptre overalt. De hadde flere sjeldne fly å vise fram. For eksempel et japanesisk “zero”, som er ett av tre gjenlevende originaler. De hadde også helikopterturer man kunne være med på og dette var jo selvsagt noe jeg måtte benytte sjansen til. Det var også morsomt. Vi fikk en slags rundtur ved siden av flyplassen og piloten tok oss ned langsmed elva og tilbake igjen.

I tillegg til utstillinger og helikopterturer hadde de også selve hovedattraksjonen, nemlig flyoppvisningen. Her fikk man se en rekke fly utføre akrobatiske stunts og vise imponerende egenskaper ved flyene. Noen av flyene man fikk se var blant annet et japanesisk zero, en F 16 og en Harrier. Harrieren var veldig imponerende. Dette er et fly som kan ta av og lande vertikalt, og under oppvisningen stoppet det i lufta over rullebanen akkurat som et helikopter. Det var veldig imponerende. Den siste delen av flyoppvisningen var dedikert til “The Blue Angels”, marinens demonstrasjonsflygere. Disse er de beste av de beste og de er veldig kjente og populære. Deres oppvisning varte lengre enn de andres og bestod av imponerende formasjonsflyging og andre akrobatiske kunster.

Noe annet som jeg merket med når jeg var på flystevnet, var at amerikanere er veldig patriotiske. Flere av pilotene hadde amerikanske flagg med seg i flyene sine og vinket med de mens de takset på rullebanen. I åpningen av flystevnet sang de også selfølgelig nasjonalsangen. Dette er veldig vanlig på større arrangement i USA. De var også selvsagt veldig ivrige på rekrutteringen til militæret her. Speakeren nevnte ved flere anledninger at alle ungdommer måtte tenke seg godt om denne muligheten.

Dette får vel være nok for denne gang. Det kommer nok antagelig til å bli en stund til neste gang jeg skriver her. Har to uker med jakt foran meg. Så dere får glede dere til neste gang, da blir det ferskt jaktstoff og skrive om, og mange fine bilder.
