British Airways has confirmed their updated service to Grenada which means doubling their flights as of 28 March 2010 to two flights a week.

The carrier currently flies to Grenada twice a week in the busy Winter season but previously reduced that to one flight over the quieter Summer months, this new service gives travelers more options of getting to Grenada to take advantage of lower accommodation costs in the off season.

The increased service will be using Boeing 777s in three classes: World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World. The Winter service will fly from London Gatwick to Grenada via Antigua on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Summer service will operate on Tuesdays and Sundays via Barbados.

British Airways Holidays are offering deals to a hand picked selection of hotels, Calabash is (of course!) among that selection.

Try not to laugh. I was listening to The Rush Limbaugh Show from Wednesday (I record the show while

Try not to laugh.

I was listening to The Rush Limbaugh Show from Wednesday (I record the show while at school/work and usually listen the next day). Fourteen minutes into the show, he mentions that a Japanese airline is requiring passengers to use the bathroom prior to takeoff in order to reduce weight on the plane, thereby reducing carbon emissions. I looked it up on Google, and here’s the article I found. According to this, Rush was a little off – it’s not a requirement, but they are definitely requesting that customers use the commode.

Anyway, the whole argument is that going to the bathroom will reduce carbon emissions by reducing the weight the plane transports. Let’s table the whole environment issue for the moment and assume that the world is, indeed, being negatively affected by carbon emissions and oil use and that the ice caps are melting and we’re all going to die and all that stuff. Assuming that’s all true, how much will this help? I decided to run some numbers on how much it would actually do. First, I tried to find out what kind of planes ANA uses, but I couldn’t. For my calculations, I found a list of passenger airplanes used by Air Charter International and picked the first plane in the list, the A300-600R. I also made the following assumptions:

the plane is fully used (all seats filled)

each person weighs 130 pounds

a bathroom trip relieves a person of 5 pounds of weight (arbitrary number, keep in mind that many passengers won’t even feel the biological need to go to the bathroom, and will only be going because of the “environment” thing)

each of the 393 passengers carries 10 pounds of carry-on (the limit is 22) and checks 80 pounds of luggage (the limit is 100 – more for business-class passengers)

The A300-600R weighs 200,400 pounds when empty. When fully loaded (we’ll add a crew of 52 – totally arbitrary number), there are 445 people weighing 130 pounds, 393 of whom bring an additional 90 pounds of luggage. The total weight is 200,400 + 445*130 + 393*90 = 293,620 pounds. Assuming that each of the 445 uses the bathroom, that is 2,250 pounds less that the airplane is transporting. That means there is a total of 225000/293620 = 0.77% reduction in required energy.

That roughly equates to a 0.77% reduction in carbon emissions. Keeping in mind that this number is very high (the average person’s weight was low, the average luggage-per-person was probably low, and so on), that’s a ridiculously tiny amount that will be saved. Add to this the fact that this whole thing is merely a suggestion (meaning that many – if not most – passengers won’t comply) and the fact that ANA isn’t exactly the largest airline, with half the number of passengers as the largest airline – Southwest Airlines, and the whole effect becomes negligible.

This whole “green” thing got ridiculous a long time ago. To me, it’s not much more than a joke now. A running joke, but still a joke.

Rush then had an idea – the paint used on the aircraft probably weighed more. I tried running the numbers for this – way too many approximations. But I’ll bet there’s some merit to the idea.

Anyway, I was talking about this story with my roommate, and he jokingly commented that perhaps they might only want to encourage using the bathroom on Japan-bound flights. That way, the “carbon emissions” that you emit in the bathroom would be emitted outside Japan, making Japan look “better” compared to other countries in terms of environmentalism.

Back ‘when I were a girl’ (said in a Yorkshire accent) I used to travel a lot with my pa

Back ‘when I were a girl’ (said in a Yorkshire accent) I used to travel a lot with my parents. Commercial air travel was still relatively new and I clearly remember how when we’d see air crew walking through the airport their heads were held high with pride, and everyone looked admiringly at them. Have you seen the film ‘Catch me if you can’? Well, if you weren’t around in the 1960s to see what I’m talking about for yourself, that film shows you pretty much what it was like to be air crew then. It was the coolest job – seriously, those people were mini gods. I remember having ambitions as a little girl to be an air hostess. I have to tell you, however, that every time I said so to my mother that she would quickly retort: ‘You want to be a trolly dolly? Really? Ooh no, I don’t think so!’ (I did secretly keep on dreaming though).

A couple of months back an ad for Virgin Airways was released on TV and it plays on this nostalgia because they are currently celebrating 25 years as an airline. When we fly anywhere long distance nowadays I am of course swayed not only by price but by the convenience of the destination airport for us, plus those all important airmiles. Still, I have to say I have a tremendous soft spot for Virgin and will use them whenever I can. This is partly because I have huge admiration for Richard Branson but mostly because Virgin were once incredibly generous with us. You see we took the girls over to the States one year on an ‘all in’ Virgin holiday and to cut a long story short, our holiday fell short of expectations. Nothing totally horrendous, just really not what we had expected. When we got back I wrote to the company to say how disappointed we’d been, not thinking that I’d ever hear anything back from them. Well, far from it. A short while later I received a letter of apology and – here’s the thing - a full refund for the holiday. I was, and still am, blown away by this generous attitude, so is it any wonder that Richard Branson (already a business hero of mine) rocketed right up in my estimation? It was probably also a clever business move on their part because over the years I’ve missed absolutely no opportunity to extoll the many virtues of Virgin. There is no better advertisement than a totally smitten customer.

Here’s that wonderful ad … and they really couldn’t have picked a better piece of music because it’s one of my all time favourites ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. ‘ Ah them were the days’ (she said, back in her Yorkshire accent).

IANS 9 September 2009, 06:32pm IST
NEW DELHI: The stand-off between the pilots and the management of Jet Airways persisted for the second day on Wednesday, resulting in
cancellations of 169 flights that forced an estimated 14,000 passengers to cancel their trips or shift to other airlines.

The airline said 432 pilots had reported sick on Wednesday in violation of the Bombay High Court order a day earlier, restraining them from resorting to any form of strike in the country’s largest private carrier.

Amid this drama and chaos at airports across the country, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal met civil aviation minister Praful Patel here and also held parleys with a section of the pilots to resolve the impasse — but with little success till evening.

Both Patel and Goyal declined to respond to queries from waiting reporters on the outcome of their meeting, even as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation sought to bring the two sides to the table for discussions to end the stand-off.

The pilots are demanding the reinstatement of two of their colleagues, who were sacked last month, which they say was done mainly because of their role in the formation of a separate union.

They also want their newly formed union, the National Aviators Guild, to be recognised by the Jet Airways management.

“We just want our voice back in the company. We want back our colleagues who were sacked,” said guild president Girish Kaushik. “The problems faced by the passengers is certainly not due to us,” he added.

Kaushik also claimed that the cabin crew of the airline had agreed to join the stir even as some national-level trade unions, including those affiliated with Left parties, extended their support to the guild.

But it was evident as the day progressed that Jet Airways management was not willing to buckle under the pressure being exerted by the pilots, particularly in light of the order passed by the Bombay High Court late Tuesday.

“They are behaving like terrorists. They cannot hold the country, the passengers and the airline hostage,” Goyal told reporters here before his meeting with the officials of the aviation ministry and Patel.

“We won’t tolerate such blackmail. The livelihood of more than 30,000 employees of Jet Airways is at stake. I am open to meeting and talking to the pilots. I will be more than happy. But they cannot harass the passengers,” Goyal said.

Unlike the day before when the bulk of the passengers booked on Jet Airways were left virtually stranded at the airports, Wednesday saw many of them accommodated on its low-cost arm JetLite and the state-run Air India.

“We have accommodated 80 percent of the passengers on other carriers. For the balance, the entire fare has been refunded,” chief operating officer of Jet Airways Hamid Ali told reporters in Mumbai.

Goyal said apart from causing hardship to passengers, the agitation was resulting in major losses for the airline, which is already facing hardship because of the downturn, as the carrier was also losing out because of the inconvenience caused to passengers.

“We had bookings from over 14,000 domestic passengers and 9,500 international passengers,” Goyal said, seeking to project the carrier’s losses in terms of how many guests the airline was unable to fly.

The government also tried to do its bit when it asked all states to review the situation with regard to what it called a “wildcat strike” and invoke provisions of their respective Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

Jet Airways & Jet Lite operations were hit badly as a number of pilots have not reported on duty, as a protest against sacking of their colleagues. The airline has described their action as a sabotage.

The fact remains in this embroil between the management and the pilots, the customers are suffering badly.

Many flights have been canceled.
