By-election Blues: A Fading BJP, a Stunned SP and a Clueless CPI(M)

Close on the heels of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, we now have the results from by-elections to thirty-one assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat. The by-elections covered a large part of the Indian political spectrum: Left-ruled West Bengal and Kerala, BSP-ruled UP, BJP-ruled Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as well as Congress-ruled Assam and Rajasthan. Of the 31 seats, the Congress claimed ten, the BSP nine and the TMC seven. The rest were shared by the BJP, Forward Bloc and independents.

By-elections are often too limited in scale and scope to offer a really representative picture of the developing political scene in a state. But like the recent by-polls in Bihar, the scale of by-polls in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal too has been fairly large and the message too loud to be ignored. 

The UP results have been particularly stunning. Among the eleven Assembly seats that went for by-polls, the BSP got as many as nine, the Congress one and the remaining going to an independent candidate. The BJP and SP failed to retain any of their seats and drew a blank. The decline of the BJP in UP has indeed reached unprecedented proportions. The BJP lost even in Lucknow and whether in Ferozabad LS seat or the ten other Assembly seats that went for the by-poll, the BJP vote plummeted to merely a few thousands. The BJP’s loss has been gain for the Congress, which not only won the Ferozabad LS seat and the Lucknow West assembly seat but finished second in several other seats and significantly improved its votes in almost all seats.

The BJP’s decline and the revival of the Congress have cost the SP dear. The Ferozabad LS seat and many of the by-poll bound Assembly seats were traditional SP strongholds, yet the party failed to open its account. Clearly, with the BJP receding into the background, the SP has lost its pre-eminence as the leading ‘secular’ force in the state and in many areas the SP vote has suffered a two-way split benefiting the Congress as well as the BSP. The BSP has of course emerged as the biggest immediate beneficiary in the state, yet in the Ferozabad LS seat the BSP finished third. The relative gains made by the BSP in the regional context of UP politics must be reconciled with this larger picture of the party’s stagnation and decline nationally or in states like Haryana and Maharashtra where the party had seemed to be gaining ground in previous elections.

The results from West Bengal have not been unexpected in terms of direction, but the scale of TMC gains and the intensity of the CPI(M)’s rout must still have raised quite a few eyebrows. The LF had only three of the ten seats where by-polls were held, and so it may seem that the CPI(M) or LF did not have much stake in the by-polls. But there can be no mistaking the intensity of the anti-CPI(M) landslide. In the Rajganj Assembly segment under Jalpaiguri LS seat, the CPI(M) had led by 50,000 plus votes even in the recent LS election, but this time the CPI(M) lost this seat to TMC. In Kalchini (ST) segment under Alipurduar (ST) LS constituency, the RSP finished third while an independent candidate supported by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha bagged the seat.  

In the prestigious Belgachhia East by-election, where the seat had fallen vacant following the demise of CPI(M) stalwart Subhas Chakrabarty, the TMC candidate, a former lieutenant of Chakrabarty, wrested the seat by a margin of nearly 30,000 votes. The lone Left Front victory in these by-elections came from Goalpokhar in North Dinajpur district with the Forward Bloc regaining the seat at the expense of the Congress.

More than the margin of the CPI(M)/LF loss, the CPI(M) leadership must be feeling dejected by the fact that its ultimate tactical dream of weaning the Congress away from the TMC over the shared common plank of ‘responsible governance’ (read repressive collaboration) came a total cropper. Jyoti Basu’s appeal to traditional Congress voters to stand by the CPI(M) at West Bengal’s (read CPI(M)’s) hour of crisis just as the CPI(M) had stood by the Congress at the Centre fell on absolutely deaf ears. While the CPI(M) gropes for the next tactical straw on its capitulationist trajectory, it is now the TMC’s turn to expose itself as the new ‘oppositional’ ruler in West Bengal. As the Writers Building finally seems to be heading towards a change of guard, the battle for a real revival of the Left must begin in right earnest on the changing political turf of rural Bengal.

Preparations for Bihar Bandh on November 24

November 24 will mark the completion of four years of the Nitish Government. On that day, the CPI(ML) has called for a Bihar Bandh to highlight the all-round failure of the Nitish Government – on all fronts, be it the failure to implement of the recommendations of the Land Reforms Commission as well as the Common School Commission; to protect the poor from price hikes; to curb loot and corruption in NREGA, ration and other schemes; or industrial and agricultural development.

Towards the Bandh, the CPI(ML) has begun widespread mass contact drives from 10 November onwards, with senior party leaders leading more than 300 padyatra teams which are holding meetings, mass meetings, and distributing leaflets in villages in more than two dozen districts. Sharecroppers and landless labourers in particular have responded enthusiastically to this campaign.

At a Press Conference on 13 November, Party General Secretary Comrade Dipankar Bhattacharya released a booklet published by the party titled – ‘The Nitish Government and the Recommendations of the Land Reforms Commission headed by D Bandopadhyaya.’

Dalit Youth Shot Dead by Landed Criminals

in Punjab:

CPI(ML) Leads Protests 

On 4 October, a dalit youth Jeevan Singh (a brick-kiln worker) was shot dead in public by high caste Jatts for raising his voice against casteist humiliations by the latter in Chuhar Chakk village of Moga District, Punjab. Moga is part of the same Malwa region of Punjab where such atrocities against dalit labourers have grown – such as the assault on Bant Singh Jhabbar some years ago.

Jeevan Singh, 22, had dared to stop Jatts from playing vulgar and offensive songs on their tractor-stereo at loud volume when crossing in front of dalit homes. A gang of powerful Jatts who also enjoy political backing of the Akali Dal, and have often indulged in acts that terrorize dalit villagers with impunity (complaints to Police were not even registered in previous cases) took this assertion of dignity as a challenge to their feudal domination. Around 50 of them, armed with weapons, came on 25 bikes to his house to hunt him out; finding him at work, they left after threats to his life. The same evening, when he was in the market place, the criminals came up openly and shot him point blank and also shot at the crowd, injuring several including some children who were hurt by the shells of the bullets. 

On 6 October, CPI(ML) leaders from Mansa and Ludhiana Bhagwant Samao, Rajwinder Rana and Tarsem Jodhan visited the victim’s family. A fact finding team of RYA lead by Hasmeet Singh visited the victim’s family. On 10 October, CPI(ML) held a press conference in Chandigarh to highlight the issue. The press conference was addressed by the mother as well as the brother of the victim as well as Comrade Tarsem Jodhan, RYA Punjab President Kanwaljit and General Secretary Hasmeet Singh. Jeevan Singh’s mother Kuldeep Kaur demanded justice for her son, having rejected attempts to get her to “settle” the case by accepting land and cash.   

Police have arrested 3 of the accused but the main accused, the gang-leader ‘Dhanna’ is evading arrest due to his political connections with the ruling Akali Dal.

On 12 October, CPI(ML), Mazdoor Mukti Morcha, RYA and labourers of village held a dharna and gherao of Police Station Mehna, under which the village Chuhar Chakk falls, demanding immediate arrest of main accused. The Gherao was lifted only when DSP gave assurance to arrest the main accused within 7 days.

On 13 October, the bereaved family held a Bhog (religious ceremony) for the murdered youth. CPI(ML) CCM and state in charge Comrade Swapan Mukherjee, as well as Punjab’s CPI(ML) leaders Bhagwant Samaon, Tarsem Jodhan, Kanwaljit and Bant Jhabbar attended the ceremony. A joint action committee headed by Hukkam Raj of Mazdoor Mukti Morcha was formed with other dalit and labour organizations.

On 16 October, a deputation from the joint action committee met the DC Moga demanding compensation to the family and immediate arrest of prime-accused.

Security Workers Hold Public Hearing in Delhi

Security workers, employed in various private security firms in Delhi, held a Public Hearing at Parliament Street on 17 November under the banner of AICCTU to spearhead the campaign for the enactment of a special law to protect security workers from the exploitative and insecure conditions of employment prevailing in the sector. Hundreds of security workers from different agencies (IPSS, Elite, SIS, SWIFT, 24 Security, Walson and others) took part in today’s public hearing.

Workers spoke of the negligible welfare measures and rampant violation of labour laws in the sector, and demanded immediate enactment of “Special Act and Board for Pvt. Security Workers” in the state of Delhi to regulate their employment and service conditions and for welfare.

The picture that emerged from the depositions of the workers is as follows:

Security through private guards has become a common phenomenon especially in urban India, especially in mega cities like Delhi. In the last decade, the number of such guards and agencies employing them had grown at an accelerated pace. Delhi is no exception to that. During the last decade there has been mushrooming growth of security agencies in Delhi and other major urban centres of the country. As per one estimate, there are more than 5,000 registered and semi-registered security agencies in Delhi itself engaging more than 2,50,000 security guards. The terms and conditions related to employment are based on very ordinary contract, which leads to continuous oppression and dismissal. In a large number of cases, security guards are not being even provided uniforms by their employers (they have to pay out of their own salaries for uniforms, shoes and transport to and from work.) They work up to twelve hours a day, for a meager salary which is as low as Rupees 2000-2500 a month. They are rarely allowed to take leave even for a day in a month. A single day’s leave in an emergency without prior intimation often leads to dismissal from the service. They are not given any benefits under ESI and PF Act. Before joining an agency, security guards have to pay Rupee 1000 on an average for dress, which has the market price of not more than Rupees 400.

Addressing the public hearing, Comrade Swapan Mukherjee, General Secretary, AICCTU, stressed that the Government was yet to recognise security workers as ‘workers’; the Delhi Government, for instance, had not included this sector in its list of sectors where minimum wages would apply. The biggest struggle, therefore, was one for their identity, dignity and rights. He mentioned that the governments of Delhi and the Centre had been claiming that workers coming to Delhi from the ‘Maoist-affected’ states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and the like would be under surveillance. Such propaganda, he said, is a pretext to ensure that the workers in highly insecure, ill-paid and exploitative sectors are prevented from protesting against the enormously exploitative conditions. He called upon the workers to take the example of the Gurgaon workers who united across factories to force the Government to recognise their demands, and to create a united struggle for their rights.      

The Public Hearing was also addressed by CPI(ML) State Secretary Sanjay Sharma, AICCTU Delhi Secretary SK Roy, AICCTU State President NM Thomas, AICCTU Secretary VKS Gautam and Ardhendu Roy, AICCTU National Secretary Rajiv Dimri and others.

Peasants at Chunar on indefinite fast against land grab and repression

The recent events around the J.P. Cement factory at Chunar (District- Mirzapur) are an example so show how the privatization of a PSU is initiated by Mulayam and later Mayawati’s government abuses state power to defend the new owners against the local population. (see ML Update Vol.  12, No. 44, 27 OCT – 02 NOV 2009) Protesting peasants have been brutally lathi-charged, and 26 of them, including a 16-year-old boy, eight dalits and a noted lawyer were jailed under the Gangster Act.

The main demands of the agitating villagers were -1. The new management of the factory was employing contract labour brought from far off places. Employment should be provided to the locals whose land had been acquired for the factory. 2. The pollution from the factory and the newly constructed 38 MW coal based power plant was destroying the crops of the farmers as well as adversely affecting their health. Reckless exploitation of ground water was causing scarcity of drinking water for the villagers. They demanded a check on the pollution and compensation for the damaged crops and 3. A pathway passing through the factory and connecting the outskirts of a village to its centre had been closed by the management of the factory causing severe hardship to the locals. They demanded that it be opened for free transit.

The CPI(ML) decided to intervene in this movement and a Dharna was organized against police atrocity on 21st October followed by a protest march to the district Head Quarter on the 26th Oct. To further pressurize the government for the release of the arrested, an indefinite Dharna and relay hunger fast was started from the 2nd November in Chunar under the banner of Uttar Pradesh Kisan Sabha. Ishwari Kushwaha, the State Convener of UPKS also joined the fast for 72 hours.

With mounting pressure from the movement and all-round condemnation from the locals, bail was finally granted to the arrested. The judge while granting bail had to write in his order that the entire actions of the state machinery had been carried out so as to benefit JP Associates.

The indefinite dharna continues, and CPI(ML) plans to intensify the struggle in the days to come.

RYA Burns Raj Thackeray’s Effigy in Lucknow

Activists of the Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) burnt the effigy of Raj Thackeray on 10 November outside the UP Assembly at Lucknow, in protest against the lumpen and chauvinistic violence by MNS MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly. Holding the Congress Government responsible for encouraging the MNS phenomenon, they demanded the arrest of Raj Thackeray.  The effigy birning was preceded by a spirited march by RYA activists led by State President Balmukund Dhuria from their office at Lalkuan to the Assembly.

Initiatives by RYA Punjab

From 27-29 October, RYA Punjab ran a stall selling revolutionary literature, films, etc, at a 3-day youth festival being held at the Punjabi University Patiala. Many students responded enthusiastically; a meeting was held and a committee of the RYA formed.

From 29 October to 1 November, RYA participated in the ‘Mela Ghadari Babean Da’ (Fair to commemorate the martyrdom of the Gadar party leaders – Gadri Babas) which is held at Deshbhakt Yaadgar Hall, Jalandhar every year. A documentary made by RYA on the Mansa struggle for homestead land, titled ‘10 Marla Zameen’ was also released there. RYA teams from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and  Punjabi University, Patiala participated in various events at the fair.

From 3-4 October, RYA organised a stall at the Thapar Technical University, Patiala, and was once again received warmly by students.

On 14 October, the new unit of RYA in Gidderbaha District of Muktasar held a Natak Mela (Theatre Festival) dedicated to the Martydom day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha (16 October.) RYA President Kanwaljit, General Secretary Hasmeet and Joint Secretary Harmeet (who is from Gidderbaha) were present.

On 16 October, a function marking the Martydom Day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha was held at Punjabi University, Patiala and Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

AISA initiatives in Madurai

Private education institutions are making money with the blessing of the Government machinery. In Tamilnadu many minsters, politicians and any other capable criminal or money bag own a Private Education Institution. In Madurai students of a private polytechnic were attacked by police when they marched more than 20 kms from their private polytechnic to Madurai city to ask the District Collector to enquirer into the money extracted by the management in the name of penalties.

AISA issued a poster condemning the attack and held a Student’s Convention on 13 November in protest against commercialisation of education. More than 40 students attended the convention which was presided by Comrades Divya, Selva and Vinotha.

Representatives of many student organizations spoke at the convention. Comrade Usha (SCM,Tamilnadu) addressed the students. The convention decided to launch a campaign against the unholy alliance of the education mafia and the state government and to study and publish a document on the status of exploitation by the private institutions in Madurai district in January.

Workshop in Patna in memory of Comrade Ashok Kumar

On the first death anniversary of Comrade Ashok Kumar on 12 November, the Patna Town Committee of the party along with Samkaleen Lokyuddh organised a Workshop on ‘Current Situation in Bihar and Tasks of the Left.’ Comrade Ashok Kumar was a CPI(ML) leader, member of Lokyuddh editorial board, and in the course of his life, had not only worked as an political organiser in many states, but was also committed to the task of Marxist analysis and response to current social, economic and political developments. He passed away from a heart attack suddenly last year.  

The Workshop began with revolutionary musical tribute to the martyrs and departed communists by Hirawal. Comrade Brij Bihari Pandey, editor, Lokyuddh, then described Comrade Ashok Kumar’s life and values, and outlined the perspective of the workshop. The Workshop was inaugurated by Party State Secretary Comrade Nand Kirshore Prasad. Comrade Saroj Chaubey, Secretary of the Town Committee, presented a report of the responsibilities and tasks of the various branches and committees towards the Bihar Bandh of 24 November on the issues of land.

In the concluding speech, Party General Secretary Comrade Dipankar said that for the Left in Bihar, making land reforms (a precondition for Bihar’s development) a central political agenda in defiance of the spectrum of ruling class parties out to scuttle it was a key challenge. 

BSNL Workers Demand Implementation of Wage Revision

Demanding that wage revisions announced by the Government in January 2007 be implemented without any further delay, around 150 BSNL workers under the banner of AICCTU held a protest at the Ambattur Estate Exchange. They pointed out that wage revisions for officers had come into force 9 months back, but the workers are being neglected. On AICCTU’s invitation, C K Mathivanan, National Secretary of the National Federation of Telecom Employees (NFT) addressed the protesting workers. 

Pricol Workers’ Relief Efforts for those affected by heavy rains in the Nilgiris

Heavy rains in the Nilgiris have resulted in the loss of over 100 lives, and massive devastation of crops and homes. In response, workers of the Pricol factory at Coimbatore, already engaged in a struggle against repression, responded to a call by the AICCTU to contribute 1 kilo of rice per worker by way of relief. Not only workers belonging to AICCTU, but even the minority of workers who belong to other unions responded to the call. In Plant III, where only 73 of the 330 workers do not belong to AICCTU, workers responded across the board, and 500 kiloas of rice were collected as we go to press. In Plant I too the same efforts are ongoing. A team of workers plant to go soon to the affected areas for relief work.

Protest against Fare Hike in Delhi

CPI(ML) held a protest on 14 Nov. at ITO in Delhi against the hike in fares of Metro trains and DTC buses. Protestors pointed out that the Shiela Dixit Govt is on a privatisation spree, and the burden for Commonwealth Games is being borne by the common people. The Govt has reduced the Government-owned DTC into a revenue collecting agency for Tata, and is buying buses from Tata at 2-3 times the actual rate, not to mention paying Tata exorbitantly for the maintenance and operation of buses. The bus fares have been hiked steeply in order to meet this expense. Protestors demanded an end to the commercialisation of public transport in the capital city. A protest and street corner meeting was also held at Kondli on Nov. 11.

Saprotot, ka priekšā vēl vesela diena, izdomājam, ka varētu “na haļavu” aiziet uz kino (paldies māsai!) – domāts, darīts! Sazvanām manu māsu un sarunājam bezmaksas biļetes uz Džeksona filmu. Jauki (recenziju par filmu lasi mazliet vēlāk). Tad nu plāns gatavs – papusdienojam pie mammas, tad dodamies uz Hensonu nopirkt man lēcas. Ak, jā – kopš optometrists pateica, ka ar šādu lēcu nēsašanas intensitāti (16-18 h dienā) es drīz kļūšu akla (es, protams, pārspīlēju:)), steidzīgi iegādājos brilles un no 3 mēnešu lēcām pārgāju uz 1 mēneša.  Tas nozīmē, ka man uz Brīv./Bruņu. ielu būs jāiet daudz biežāk. Nekas. Kad lēcas kabatā, protams, nevaram ignorēt smaržas, kas plūst no “Mārtiņa beķerejas” un padodamies kārdinājumam. Nenožēlojām

Pamazām jau pietuvojas brīdis, kad jāsākas filmai. Pa ceļam vēl ieskrienam datorveikalā (nesen nosvila barošanas bloks). Tur noskaidrojam, ka iespēja šodien Rīgā nopirk barošanas bloku līdzinās iespējai, ka nokritīs vēl viens “meteorīts”. HĀ. Toties uzzinām, ka puslīdz droši var iegādāties Zalman,Chieftec un Forton barokļus.  Ļoti noderīga informācija Tas nozīmē, ka būs jāiztiek ar superlēno un vīrusu apsēsto rezerves kompi vēl vesela nedēļas nogale. Labi. Ne to vien esam pārdzīvojuši.

Skrienam uz filmu. Paspējam, un mums pat paliek 10 min, lai nopirktu kādu dzērienu un superīgos marshmallow’s! Ņamm!Filma ir ok, zāle pustukša – varbūt tādēļ, ka biļetes ir tādas padārgas…Kino nav pat vēl pusē, kad zvana Reinis un piedāvā vakarā doties uz Aishas koncertu! Un atkal “na haļavu”! Mēs jau smejamies, ka vēl tikai jāmēģina atrast vietu, kur par brīvu piedzerties, un tad diena būtu makten izdevusies!:D Labi, iesim ar uz to Aišas koncertu (recenzija būs!).  Lai neliktos par maz, mums kā kundziņiem pakaļa atbrauc Ronis un lekni aizvizina uz Sapņu fabriku. Tad koncerts (un man ir, ko teikt!). Kad tas laimīgi pārciests (protams, garastāvoklis jau ir sabojājies), izdomājam, ka aliņš nenāktu par skādi.

Dodamies uz “Pieciem vilkiem”. A tur jau priekša cien. Freimaņa kungs (kas nav nekas pārsteidzošs, jo man šķiet, ka viņš tur patiesībā dzīvo). Jaukā pasēdēšana 4atā nenovēršami izvēršas par Copes brauciena sapulci un man šķiet,ka sāk kļūt garlaicīgi. Līdz…. Freimaņa kungs izdomā, ka vajag bik padziedāt. Klasiku. Un tā mēs dabūjam noklausīties “Yestarday” smeldzīgā klavieru pavadījumā, bet balsi nekomentēšu… Džeki jau sapriecājas, vai tik nebūs “Satīties, sapīties”, kad mūsu kvēlākās ilgas tiek apmierinātas! Un izskan smeldzīgā “Neprāta cenas” dziesma. Johaidī-vēl tikai trūka, lai Ella iebrāztos pa durvīm un papildinātu “brīnišķīgo” skanējumu. Džeki ierēc un dūc līdzi Nu var teikt, ka vakars nudien ir izdevies! Un, ja kas, majonēze, ko šeit dod pie frī, ir pasakaina!

Wall Street lastra al Ibex

El buen comportamiento que registraba el selectivo español durante la mañana no fue suficiente para mantener el tono comprador durante la tarde, que con una apertura bajista en Wall Street, esfumo toda opción de ganancias, después de que el Selectivo coquetease por enésima vez con los 12.000 puntos y se moviera en zona de máximos anuales. Al cierre el Ibex35 retrocede un 0,75% hasta 11.739,80 puntos, después de moverse en un rango de 11.733,40-11.960,40 puntos, en una jornada en la que se han negociado 4.135 millones de euros en todo el mercado. El Balance semanal, no obstante, es positivo con una ganancia del 0,54%.

En el Mercado de Divisas, el Euro se mantiene en la cota de 1,50 unidades, después de que el FMI haya anunciado que el dólar está en su cotización correcta, reflejando al debilidad de la demanda interna en Estados Unidos. Para el director del departamento de América del FMI, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, la recuperación en Estados Unidos es lenta y no se afianzará hasta el próximo año, lo que justifica la actual cotización del billete verde.

En España, se ha conocido el dato de desempleo publicado por la EPA y que refleja una caída del paro en 14.100 personas durante el tercer trimestre del año, lo que deja un cifra de 4.123.300 desempleados, lo que representa un 17,93% de la población activa, esta leve mejora en el empleo se ha producido por la temporalidad existente durante la época estival y por el Plan E del Gobierno. Una encuesta elaborada por Reuters apuntaba a una tasa de paro mayor (18,6%) en el tercer trimestre, pero las previsiones para los próximos meses resultan poco alentadoras. En el tercer trimestre del año, los trabajadores con contrato indefinido descendieron en 161.200 personas y por comunidades, Baleares y Canarias fueron las que más empleo crearon, mientras que Madrid destruyo 60.500 puestos, seguida de Andalucía (-47.000) y Comunidad Valenciana (-31.500). Por sectores, el sector servicios acumula un aumento de 465.900 parados respecto a un año antes, pese a que ha registrado una bajada de 60.800 desempleados respecto al trimestre anterior.

En el Mercado de Materias Primas, los precios del crudo podrían alcanzar los 100 dólares por barril en los dos próximos trimestres si el billete verde sigue debilitándose frente al euro, según un informe realizado por Deutsche Bank. Los expertos del banco, apuntan a que el dólar puede seguir posiciones frente al Euro, hasta llegar a su nivel histórico de 1,60 unidades, lo que llevaría al petróleo a la zona psicológica de los 100 dólares. Para Deutsche Bank, un barril en la zona de 80 dólares no perjudica la recuperación global, pero la subida por encima de los 100 dólares podría poner en peligro el consumo y frenar la recuperación. El barril Brent cotizaba a 78,82 dólares y el West Texas a 80,41 dólares, con caídas en ambos casos próximas al 1%.

Dentro del Ibex35, la salida de Caja Madrid del capital de Bankinter tumbada la cotización de la entidad, que ha cerrado con un descenso del 5,2% hasta 7,620 euros con un total de 15.344.733 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 7,575-7,745 euros. El mercado se despertaba con el anuncio de Caja Madrid de vender su participación de un 2,9% en Bankinter, encargando la operación a UBS que la ha cerrado entre inversores cualificados e institucionales. Hay que destacar las señales que aporta esta operación, con una cotización que se ha estado manteniendo por encima de los 8 euros (nivel de soporte) y que para la salida de Caja Madrid no ha podido convencer a los grandes tiburones para realizar una colocación mas ajustada. Según un hecho relevante enviado a la CNMV, el precio por acción fijado para inversores cualificados ha sido 7,72 euros, por lo que Caja Madrid ha ingresado 106 millones de euros.

Gamesa cierra la jornada con un alza de 0,8% hasta 12,750 euros con un total de 2.747.661 títulos, en una jornada en la que sus acciones se movieron por encima de los 13 euros, pero la mala apertura de Wall Street impidió que el control comprador se mantuviera hasta el cierre, lo que propicio un giro inesperado a última hora, que ha llevado a sus acciones a cerrar cerca de mínimos, pese a lo cual ha dejado un pequeño hueco alcista de cierre-apertura. El consejo de administración de Gamesa ha acordado hoy el nombramiento por cooptación de Luis Lada Díaz como consejero independiente. Lada es actualmente consejero de Telefónica de España, Telefónica Latinoamerica, Indra Sitemas, Telefónica O2, Telcel, Telefónica I+D, Ydilo AVSS y SIDSA.

Las acciones de Sacyr Vallehermoso se anotan una caída del 2,0% hasta 11,570 euros con un total de 355.853 títulos negociados en el mercado en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 11,510-11,975 euros. Desde Goldman Sachs han elevado esta semana el precio objetivo de la constructora, desde los 11,70 hasta los 14,50 euros, aunque han mantenido su recomendación de Neutral.

En el Mercado Continuo, Antena3 salva la semana por encima de los 6 euros, concluyendo hoy con un alza del 1,0% hasta 6,18 euros con un total de 516.652 títulos negociados, en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 6,04-6,27 euros. Parece que al final, el valor ha logrado encontrar una zona soporte estable, después de que la colocación de la participación de Sabadell pusiera fin al camino alcista que llevaba la cotización.

Bruscos movimientos en Colonial, después de una apertura con fuerte tirón alcista, que perdió fuerza poco después. Al cierre, Inmobiliaria Colonial cae un 1,3% hasta 0,148 euros con un total de 27.591.299 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 0,147-0,162 euros. La inmobiliaria ha propuesto a sus bancos acreedores realizar una ampliación de capital por importe de 1.500 millones de euros, dentro del marco de las negociaciones para la refinanciación de su deuda. Esta ampliación de capital debería ser suscrita por el mercado, o en caso contrario, serían los bancos los que aportarían capital a cambio de acciones. Por otra parte, la inmobiliaria también proponer segregar su actividad, separando el negocio del suelo en una nueva sociedad. Hay que recordar que La Caixa y Banco Popular controlan actualmente el capital de la inmobiliaria, sumando entre ambas un 23,8% de su capital, después de que se quedarán con las acciones de Luís Portillo, como consecuencias de sus problemas para afrontar sus deudas.

Las pequeñas inmobiliarias tienen hoy un comportamiento desigual, así Renta Corporación sube un 4,7% hasta 3,370 euros, Reyal-Urbis recupera un 5,1% hasta 3,330 euros y Realia sube un 4,3% hasta 1,930 euros, mientras Afirma retrocede un 2,1% hasta 0,331 euros con un total de 1.033.471 títulos y AISA retrocede un 4,4% hasta 1,97 euros con un total de 131.132 títulos, después de la vertiginosa subida registrada ayer.

SOS Corporación Alimentaria cierra con un avance del 7,4% hasta 2,385 euros, con un total de 2.185.990 títulos negociados en el mercado. Con este cierre, se confirma el rebote de la acción, pero existen muchas dudas en el aire, como el posible cierre del hueco bajista que puede actuar como importante resistencia. Por ahora, el valor trata de volver a la normalidad, pero la herida esta abierta y el recorrido al alza se encuentra bastante limitado. La entrada de Nueva Rumasa en el capital podría ser el revulsivo que le hace falta a la acción, pero deberíamos saber antes en que condiciones se produce esa entrada, teniendo en cuenta la necesaria ampliación de capital.

Finalmente, Vueling retrocede un 7,0% hasta 12,16 euros con un total de 817.674 títulos negociados en el mercado. La caída de Vueling, la mayor del mercado en la sesión de hoy, se ha producido tras la emisión de un informe negativo realizado por Renta4 que aconseja venta parcial, a lo que se ha sumado los planes de Iberia de crear una nueva compañía aerea de medio y corto radio, para reducir los costes laborales, pero a su vez podría afectar a su fusión con British Airways y a las expectativas de crecimiento de su participada Vueling.

FISA presents itself as an association of Indian students in Australia. It had published a 10 points charter of demands.

 In addition to many impractical demands contained in this 10 point charter, it is canvassing for the help lines or hot lines in all Indian languages.

I am bemused and perplexed with this demand.

What is wrong with help line in English, FISA leaders? After all, students have passed IELTS exam which means they have proficiency in  English and Australia is an English speaking country!

May be, FISA leaders can explain their thought process!

Nueva Rumasa estudia fusión con SOS

Si ayer el mercado se aproximaba a zona de máximos anuales, hoy ha vuelto a registrar descensos, que si bien han llevado al Selectivo a jugar con el nivel de los 11.700 puntos, han servido también para establecer un soporte desde el que recuperar aire. El Ibex35 se ha movido durante la sesión en un rango de 11.686,30-11.855,50 puntos, para concluir con una caída del 0,39% hasta 11.828,60 puntos. Las últimas jornadas estamos viviendo en primera línea como el mercado muestra un alto grado de incertidumbre y no sabe que camino tomar, la indecisión controla tanto a los compradores y los vendedores, que se mueven por impulsos y cambian de opinión de un momento para otro.

En el Mercado de Divisas, el Euro retrocede posiciones y se cambia a 1,4984 unidades, muy próximo a la cota psicológica de 1,50 unidades de Dólar, mientras el Euribor a un año retrocede hasta el 1,253%. Los expertos inciden en que los bancos centrales tendrán que modificar su política de tipos si la inflación repunta, aunque no de forma inmediata, así esperan que los tipos en el interbancario avancen hasta el 2%-2,5% para diciembre de 2010, mientras los tipos de interés se encuentran en el 1%, nivel en el que puede permanecer hasta la segunda mitad de 2010 o incluso hasta finales de año. Desde Bankinter, apuestan por una subida simbólica a partir de la última parte de 2010, por lo que sitúan los tipos en el 1,25% para pasar a lo largo de 2011 al 2% y al 2,50% un año más tarde.

Dentro del mercado inmobiliario, un informe realizado por la consultora CB Richard Ellis indica que el precio de la vivienda estaría ya tocando fondo en algunos tramos de mercado, resaltando entre ellos a los que corresponden a activos de más calidad. La consultora destaca que el mercado residencial ha sido el más castigado y por consiguiente el que más tiempo tardará para recuperarse. Según CB Richard Ellis, España se sitúa como uno de los países más atractivos de Europa para la inversión extranjera en activos inmobiliarios, como consecuencia del fuerte ajuste de precios registrado desde 2007.

En España, un estudio realizado por el Grupo Santander, afirma que España conseguirá salir de la recesión económica en la próxima primavera, pero destaca la necesidad de realizar reformas para establecer un nuevo modelo de crecimiento, que no se centre únicamente en la construcción, para ello el Gobierno central y autonómicos deberán actuar de forma coordinada, permitiendo que la recuperación pueda ser más intensa. Por otra parte, la recuperación en España tiende a ser más modesta que en el resto de países, debido a que la recesión llego a España más tarde que al resto y contábamos con debilidades adicionales que no contaban el resto de países. Santander también señala en su informe, que cuando la tasa de paro sube tan rápidamente está claro que algo no funciona, por lo que habrá que comprobar qué es.

En el Mercado de Materias Primas, el barril de crudo se mantiene próximo al nivel de los 80 dólares, mientras entre los metales preciosos, el oro se cambia por encima de 1.054 dólares.

Dentro del Ibex35, la aseguradora Mapfre lidera las ganancias del Selectivo, con una subida del 3,5% hasta 3,318 euros con un total de 8.056.980 títulos negociados entre los inversores. Mapfre presentó esta semana un nuevo fondo de inversión garantizado que está vinculado a la evolución de cuatro índices bursátiles europeos. El fondo Fondmapfre Garantizado 911 se extiende hasta el día 22 de noviembre de 2013, fecha en la que el participe recibirá la totalidad de su inversión inicial. El fondo ofrece la posibilidad de obtener una rentabilidad de hasta el 30% si al vencimiento el valor de los cuatro índices es igual o superior al 110% de su valor inicial. La cotización de la aseguradora se mantiene en zona de máximos anuales, acumulando una revalorización del 38,2% anual, lo que ha elevado su capitalización en el mercado hasta la cifra de 9.500 millones de euros.

Grifols, fabricante de plasma sanguíneo, también escapa de los números rojos, después de un errático comportamiento durante todo el mes de Octubre, lo que ha provocado que pierda el soporte de los 12 euros. Los títulos de Grifols han empezado a confirmar un cambio de tendencia, tras marcar mínimos esta semana en 11,175 euros. Grifols sube hoy un 2,1% hasta 11,410 euros con un total de 2.956.592 títulos negociados. El fabricante de plasma sanguíneo es uno de los valores que peor comportamiento ha registrado durante el rebote, debido a su carácter defensivo, lo que le lleva acumular un descenso del 7.3% anual y estar muy cerca de su suelo (10 euros).

Los títulos de Banco Popular se mantienen estancados en el nivel de de 6,30-6,50 euros. En la sesión de hoy, la entidad presidida por Ángel Ron retrocede un 0,3% hasta 6,51 euros con un total de 6.729.348 títulos negociados en el mercado. Tras la colocación de la ampliación realizada por la entidad, el valor perdió el nivel de referencia de 7 euros, cotizando desde entonces en un canal lateral que hasta la fecha respeta el soporte de 6,30 euros.

Criteria cierra con una caída del 0,1% hasta 3,485 euros con un total de 2.254.841 títulos negociados en el mercado. El holding de participaciones industriales de La Caixa, ha estado suspendido de cotización durante la mañana, tras comunicar la cesión del control de Aguas de Barcelona a Suez y la compra simultanea de Adeslas. Criteria ha logrado unas plusvalías cercanas a los 150 millones de euros por la venta de su participación en Agbar, cuyas acciones han logrado subir en la apertura más de un 8% y cotizar por encima de los 20 euros, cerrando en 19,73 euros (+8,2%) con un total de 828.387 títulos negociados en el mercado.

En el Mercado Continuo, AISA se anota una subida del 11,4% hasta 2,06 euros con un total de 149.289 títulos negociados en el mercado. Sin embargo, pese a esta destacable subida, su rally al alza ha tenido lugar en los últimos minutos de contratación, lo que altera considerablemente la percepción sobre el valor.

El grupo químico Ercros ya ha iniciado su goteo a la baja, en busca de la zona del euro. Son muchos los casos de valores que tras realizar un anti-split, con el fin de evitar la especulación sobre el valor, logran un efecto mucho peor sobre su cotización, que vuelve a descender por debajo del euro pasado algún tiempo. Los títulos de Ercros pierden hoy un 3,6% hasta 1,590 euros, con un total de 517.645 títulos negociados.

La operadora Jazztel cierra la sesión con una caída de 1,0% hasta 0,307 euros con un total de 15.397.020 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 0,303-0,310 euros. La operadora ha comunicado la apertura de un nuevo centro de atención al cliente en Chile, para atender la nueva demanda y garantizar la calidad de sus servicios, este nuevo call-center, denominado Jazzplat Chile, se prevé que este operativo en los primeros meses de 2010 y contará con más de 150 empleados, que sumará a los 1.500 empleados que cuenta el existente en Argentina.

Grupo Prisa defiende con uñas y dientes el soporte de 3,40 euros, acumulando durante la jornada una caída que en algunos instantes ha sido superior al 5%. Con la apertura de Wall Street, el valor se ha animado y las compras han entrado con gran celeridad, lo que ha provocado que sus títulos se giren al alza, cerrando en 3,640 euros (+1,4%) con un total de 1.663.170 títulos negociados. PRISA ha presentado hoy sus cuentas hasta Septiembre, periodo en el que su beneficio neto se sitúo en 46,7 millones, un 77,5% por debajo del resultado obtenido en el mismo periodo del año anterior y también por debajo de las previsiones de los analistas que esperaban 63,5 millones de euros. Grupo Prisa prevé, en el peor de los casos, un descenso del 6% en los ingresos publicitarios en 2010, por lo que considera necesario reducir costes para hacer frente a la recesión y a la caída de anunciantes.

Llega la hora de al verdad para Reyal-Urbis, después de registrar en el mes de Agosto una explosiva subida que también afectó al resto de valores inmobiliarios. La inmobiliaria pierde hoy un 9,9% hasta 3,170 euros con un total de 54.402 títulos negociados. La inmobiliaria ha presentado esta semana un nuevo plan de reestructuración de su deuda de 4.800 millones de euros con la banca y que en caso de ser aceptado le permitiría superar un eventual riesgo de concurso de acreedores.

Finalmente, SOS Corporación Alimentaria pierde un 17,5% hasta 2,220 euros, en una jornada en la que la volatilidad ha reinado sobre el valor, que se ha movido en un rango de 1,980-2,595 euros. El alto volumen de contratación realizado puede confirmar la existencia de un primer suelo en la zona de los 2 euros, pero el rebote iniciado se muestra débil, sin que haya podido ir a cerrar el hueco dejado en la apertura. UBS ha aprovechado la entrada en caída libre del valor para rebajar su precio objetivo hasta 1,20 euros, mientras la familia Ruiz Mateos se plantea una eventual fusión con SOS, para mantener los empleos y lograr crear el mayor grupo de alimentación en España.

Los inversores recogen beneficios

Después de dos jornadas de importantes alzas, el Selectivo se ha tomado la jornada de hoy como descanso, al cerrar con un descenso de 0,81% hasta 11.712,40 puntos, después de negociar 4.067 millones de euros, en un rango que ha ido desde los 11.671,30 puntos hasta los 11.854,30 puntos. En el mercado, sigue hablándose mucho sobre el futuro del dólar, como moneda de referencia para el petróleo. Las especulaciones apuntan a que el crudo podría referenciarse en un futuro no lejano a una cesta de monedas.

En el Mercado de Divisas, el Euro retrocede un 0,26% y se cambia a 1,4679 unidades de dólar, en una jornada marcada por el dato de contracción de la zona euro (-0,2%) en el segundo trimestre del año, frente a la caída del 2,5% registrada en el primer trimestre. En el conjunto de la Unión Europea, el PIB retrocedió tres décimas respecto al primer trimestre y situó su contracción interanual en el 4,9%, una décima por encima de la de primer trimestre.

Entre los países de la UE con mayores crecimientos trimestrales destacaron Eslovaquia (+2,2%), Eslovenia (+0,7%) y Polonia (+0,5%), mientras que las mayores contracciones fueron para Lituana (-9,8%) y Estonia (-3,4%).. En el mercado de la zona euro, nueve fueron los países con caídas trimestrales del PIB en el segundo trimestre y siete países lograron abandonar la recesión. Finlandia (-2,6%) fue el país con mayor contracción, seguida por España y Países Bajos (-1,1%). Por contra, salieron de la recesión Alemania, Francia, Portugal, Grecia e Irlanda, además de Eslovaquia y Eslovenia.

En el Mercado de Materias Primas, la debilidad del dólar sigue beneficiando al oro, que sube un 2,6% y se cambia a 1.047,00 dólares, mientras el barril Brent avanza un 3,4% hasta 68,90 dólares.

Dentro del Ibex35, la constructora FCC registra una caída del 5,1% hasta 30,65 euros, con un total de 2.837.562 títulos negociados por los inversores. FCC ha anunciado una emisión de 450 millones de euros en bonos convertibles para mayoristas. El interés del bono se fijará al finalizar el periodo de prospección de la demanda y estará comprendido entre el 5,50% y el 6,00% anual.

Banco Popular cede un 2,2% hasta 6,47 euros con un total de 9.642.213 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 6,43-6,62 euros. Banco Popular no ha sabido aprovechar el último empuje realizado por el mercado y se ha quedado estancado, hasta el punto de que con la caída de hoy regresa al nivel del Viernes. Por otra parte, Banesto ha cerrado en tablas (9,40 euros), con un total de 994.871 títulos negociados, en una jornada en la que la entidad ha presentado ss cuentas de los nueve primeros meses, periodo en el que ha ganado un 15% menos hasta 553,61 millones, dato peor de lo esperado, mientras que se espera que la tasa de morosidad pueda cerrar el año en el 3%, lo que podría lastrar más aun sus cuentas.

Telefónica cae un 1,6% hasta 19,030 euros con un total de 30.780.134 títulos negociados. La operadora ha comunicado a la CNMV, que el consejo de administración de Telesp, filial brasileña del grupo, acordó hoy presentar una OPA sobre el 100% de la brasileña GVT por un importe total de 2.550 millones de euros, mejorando de esta forma la oferta presenta por Vivendi, que no ha hecho comentarios hasta el momento.

En el Mercado Continuo, AISA pierde un 7,2% hasta 1,93 euros con un total de 585.975 títulos negociados y vuelve a perder la cota de los 2 euros. La inmobiliaria, destaca en los últimos meses, por ser uno de los valores más volátiles del Continuo, con bruscas oscilaciones, aunque en ningún caso siendo capaz de superar la cota de 2,45 euros (Septiembre), fecha desde la cual, inicio un goteo a la baja que parece haber encontrado suelo en la zona de 1,70 euros.

Despierte el interés NH Hoteles, que cierra con un alza del 6,6% hasta 4,645 euros, con un total de 1.901.106 títulos negociados en el mercado, en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 4,350-4,730 euros. La cadena hotelera registro un fuerte impulso alcista en el mes de Septiembre, que le llevo del nivel de 3,40 euros a tocar techo en 5,18 euros, zona desde la que ha iniciado una corrección que ha encontrado suelo en el nivel de 4,40 euros.

PRISA cae un 6,5% hasta 3,610 euros y se dirige a cerrar el hueco alcista originado en la sesión de ayer. Los inversores han aprovechado el calentón de la acción para deshacer posiciones y recoger beneficios, al mismo tiempo que alimentan la formación de resistencia sobre la zona de 3,80 euros, en la que se produce la salida de papel.

El grupo químico y papelero, Sniace, se anota una subida del 11,0% hasta 1,790 euros con un total de 2.196.697 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 1,670-1,896 euros, después de cerrar ayer en 1,612 euros, lo que ha provocado la generación de un importante hueco alcista, que acompañado del fuerte volumen negociado hoy, puede ser el origen a nuevos movimientos al alza del valor. Sniace firmó ayer un acuerdo con BBVA, por el que el banco le concederá financiación por 17 millones de euros para sus distintas empresas. Además, Sniace ha formalizado un préstamo ICO, por un importe de 5 millones de euros.

Para concluir, Vueling cierra con un alza del 2,8% hasta 11,92 euros con un total de 386.817 títulos negociados en un rango de precios que ha oscilado entre 11,61-12,24 euros. La aerolínea de bajo coste esta empezando a despegar y si la fusión de Iberia sale adelante tiene en su gráfico un prospero acelerón. Por arriba presenta resistencias en 13,00-13,20e-15,50e-17,50e-19,15e. Las últimas subidas pueden provocar una brusca corrección, pero esta claro que los inversores están recuperando el interés por el valor, lo que queda de manifiesto en los altos volúmenes que esta registrando en las últimas semanas.
