An alleged Albanian terrorist was in the middle of downloading a video showing how to make a suicide vest when police raided his home, a court has heard.

When police raided Lusha was asleep in bed but a laptop was connected to the internet and a video showing how to make a suicide vest was being downloaded

Krenar Lusha also had 14 mobile phones and a video on his laptop called “mobile detonators” that showed how to turn a mobile phone into a bomb trigger.

He had a video on his computer called “car bomb recognition guide,” that included diagrams showing how to blow up petrol with a shotgun cartridge.

In his cellar police found 71.8 litres (15.8 gallons) of petrol, along with two kilogrammes (4.4 lbs) of potassium nitrate, one of the ingredients of gunpowder, in his bedroom, and a shotgun cartridge in his lounge, the court was told.

Lusha, 30, had described himself as a “terrorist” and a “sniper” in conversations on the internet, Preston Crown Court heard.

He was asleep in bed when police raided his home in Derby on August 26 last year but a laptop was connected to the internet and material was visibly being downloaded.

Nigel Godsmark QC, prosecuting, said Lusha had downloaded a folder entitled “archive of Hezbollah military instruction manuals” which contained a number of videos in Arabic.

The videos were said to be instructional films on how to make detonators, explosives, a missile and a suicide bomber belt.

There were also instructions on placing landmines and how to strip an AK-47 automatic rifle.

“All of this freshly downloaded a few hours before the police arrived and went into the property,” Mr Godsmark said.

A total of three computers were found in his home and police discovered gruesome footage on the hard drives of live beheadings by extreme Islamic groups.

There were also a number of video clips by groups fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Chechnya that included exerts of US military vehicles and personnel being blown up and of US soldiers being shot.

Documents on his computers included the Car Bomb Recognition Guide, Middle Eastern Terrorist Bomb Design, Improvised Radio Detonation Techniques and The Mujahedeen Explosives Handbook.

Mr Godsmark said the defendant would spend a lot of his time talking to girls in foreign countries using MSN and other instant messaging systems.

“He would tell them about himself and his views – all of this conversation was being recorded on the computer which was retrieved,” Mr Godsmark said.

“During some of that conversation he described himself as a terrorist, that he was a sniper, that he loved to see Jews and Americans killed, and to watch his videos of the killings of US soldiers.

“In short he made his sympathies plain and they were with violent fundamentalist Islam.”

Lusha denies 10 counts of possessing articles which give rise to a reasonable suspicion that they were for a terror-related purpose.

I’m thinking of doing some trade-ins on my boom-stick stockage.  Two very different guns have caught my eye in the past week.  As far as rifles go they are about as far apart as you can get.  A true battle of East vs. West if you may.  The two contenders for my money are currently:

Representing the law and order side of the West – The Daniel Defense M4 (.223/5.56)

 Representing chaos and mayhem of the East - The Century Arms GP 1975 (7.62×39)

As I said, it’s a conundrum.  Both have pluses and minuses.  Cost differential is about $200 in favor of the GP1975, but that’s within my cost margin so I consider that a wash.  I’m interested in any Freak input on these fine pieces of machinery.  No matter what the final decision is, I see my ammo expenditure costs skyrocketing in the near future……

ANA learning to shoot M-16 rifles.

I was going to say Mikhail Kalashnikov would turn over in his grave if he witnessed what I saw today, but he is not dead and today he celebrated his 90^th birthday.  Mr. Kalashnikov is best known as the inventor of the Soviet AK-47 assault rifle.    The AK-47 rifle is the world’s most popular assault rifle used in 100 countries (including Afghanistan), glamorized by Hollywood in crime movies and is featured on the national flag of Mozambique.   But today I would witness history in the making.  The Afghan National Army is slowly swapping out their AK-47’s in exchange for NATO rifles, specifically the M-16 rifle manufactured by Colt Firearms Company.  Today’s mission was to escort several flatbed trucks loaded with NATO weapons destined for the ANA.

Is the snow?

After shaving and returning to my b-hut, I noticed the mountains overshadowing the camp.  It looked like an artist took his paintbrush bristles and created streaks of snow with a stroke of his brush.  It rained last night and I commented “If it gets any colder, we might see snow on the peaks in the morning.”  It wasn’t enough snow to brag about and it would probably disappear by mid-afternoon.

The Captain and I drove over to meet our ANA counterparts to ensure their convoy was ready to join with ours.  This is when I got a glimpse of the mountains off in the distance.  They were covered with snow.  Those particular mountains are much higher in elevation too.  For traveling reasons, maybe we were fortunate the run-off election did not occur, because we would have to deal with the snow and freezing temperatures.

We joined forces with the ANA and convoyed to the weapons depot.  It took all day to load the connexes on the back of 40 foot trailer trucks.  The problem we encountered was with the cranes being used to move them.  They were quite old and vintage looking.  I was rather curious why the ANA chose these cranes instead of the more modern ones being used at their camp.  I was informed that the older cranes are owned by some ANA officers and this is just another method they use to earn additional money.  Instead of using the ones provided by the United States, they contract out the cranes.  Even more shocking is that the depot did not have their own crane to move container boxes.  This depot is stocked with hundreds of connexes filled with material.

Fortunately OSHA was not present to witness the movement of these metal connexes, otherwise they might have cringed.  The cable was twisted and appeared to be splintering at the ends.  But watching people being lifted by the crane to the top of the double-stacked boxes was a bit scary.  One of my teammates chose to read a book while perched on top of the HMMVW.  I guess watching grown men swinging from a cable while being lifted by a crane didn’t catch his interest.

Our return trip was rather interesting too.  We had 14 vehicles in our convoy including 4 flatbed trailers.  Afternoon rush hour just started and we were going to drive through the heart of the city with our “train” of vehicles.  I was the convoy commander and let the ANA take the lead.  They would block off the traffic while our train rolled through the round-a-bouts and congested highways.  As expected the traffic was gridlocked at times.  Notice in the picture where the center line is and the location of the cars entering the round-a-bout.  These cars blocked on-coming traffic making it much more difficult for the traffic to flow.  We finally made it back to camp and parked the vehicles for the night.

MOSCOW (AFP) – Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Russian inventor of the globally popular AK-47 assault rifle, declared himself a happy man with few regrets as he celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday.

“Age is not significant. I have plenty of life left in me. But still, this is a special date and it needs to be celebrated,” the white-haired inventor said in remarks broadcast on Russian television.

Kalashnikov, whose tie was decorated with a metal pin shaped like an AK-47, smiled and read patriotic poetry to journalists in Izhevsk, his hometown located 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) east of Moscow.

The inventor was expected to visit Moscow later on Tuesday to meet President Dmitry Medvedev.

He is considered a hero in Russia for designing the AK-47. Also called the “Kalashnikov”, the rifle and its variants are the weapons of choice for dozens of armies and guerrilla groups around the world.

More than 100 million Kalashnikov rifles have now been sold worldwide, but their inventor, a World War II veteran, has barely profited financially from them and continues to live modestly in Izhevsk.

“In my 90 years I feel myself to be a happy man,” he said in an interview in the Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

“Of course, like with any person, there are things to regret…. But I can say one thing: I would not choose to lead my life any other way if I had the opportunity.”

Born in a Siberian village on November 10, 1919, Kalashnikov had a tragic childhood during which his father was deported under Stalin in 1930.

É a Escola Militar para Cadetes Número Nove (algo como Colégio Milico só para Moças) – uma das novas academias militares de elite da Mãe Russa. A recente vitória sobre a Geórgia, faz o Manda Chuva Russo Primeiro Ministro Vladimir Putin pensa nas escolas militares para garotas como um lugar para cidadãos modelo para sua nação ressurgente. Escolas de cadetes russos são bem antigas, começando em 1732 nos tempos da Imperatriz Anna, sobrinha de Pedro, o Grande.

Após o queda da URSS período comunista, Putin viu o renascimento do conceito para os meninos e agora as meninas também.

Nastya, 11, é pouco mais alta que seu fuzil Kalashnikov orgulhosa diz: “Acabei de aprender a desmontar e posicionar a AK-47.”

As meninas – Escolhida depois de passar por testes de aptidão que visa selecionar os líderes do futuro – também aprendem primeiros-socorros, defesa pessoal e como lidar com terroristas.

Diretor da Academia Viktoria Silenskaya diz aulas de auto-defesa vai ajudá-la meninas evitar outro escândalo semelhante ao massacre de Beslan em 2004, em que 334 pessoas, a maioria crianças, morreram em um cerco à escola.

“Queremos que as nossas meninas sejam capazes de se defender, para evitar pânicos como as crianças sofreram em Beslan, por exemplo“.

Russia’s Izhmash Concern, the maker of the renowned Kalashnikov assault rifle, will unveil a new gun next year. The gun is said to replace the legendary AK-47 system designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov Pravda.Ru reports.

Vladimir Grodetsky, the general director of the enterprise, said at the round-table discussion devoted to the ninetieth anniversary of the legendary engineer that the specification of the new gun would make it 40 or 50 percent more efficient than its predecessor.

The AK-47 gun is nearly 60 years old. It is put into service in over 55 countries of the world. About 75 million units of this gun have been made in the world today; 40 million of that amount have been made in Russia.

The Kalashnikov gun has become a legend that generated a whole class of small arms. There are more than 100 types of Kalashnikov guns: AK-74M, AKS-74U (the shorter version), AK-101, a number of smaller versions – AK-102, AK-104, AK-105, as well as lightweight machine guns Kalashnikov LMG, PKT tank machine guns and other kinds of small weapons. All of them are based on the same automatics principle, which makes it a lot easier to teach soldiers to shoot and repair the gun.

Each and every Kalashnikov can be equipped with: optical, night, laser and collimator sights, rifle-attached grenade launchers, various types of cartridges and grenades. The modern-day AK-47 gun and all of its modifications is not just an assault rifle, but a whole small-arms system, which has earned the reputation of the most efficient and reliable weapon in the world.

However, the legendary AK-47 becomes history. This is a weapon of the wars of the past, a weapon for large and poorly trained armies. This is probably the reason why Russia’s Defense Ministry purchases small arms from other countries.

Russia has other assault rifles, beside Kalashnikov: AN-94 Abakan and AEK-971 guns, but they lag far behind the renowned “Kalash.”

Vladimir Grodetsky, the director of the Kalashnikov maker, said that the enterprise was working on a new AK line which would be unveiled next year.

A fundamental principle of interventionism holds that one government intervention inevitably leads to more interventions, in order to “fix” the problems of the previous interventions. At the end of this road lies omnipotent government and the loss of freedom.

A good example of this phenomenon is being provided by a group called the Binational Task Force , whose co-chairman , Robert C. Bonner, is former head of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The group, which also includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico, wants to reinstate the assault-weapon ban that was enacted during the Clinton era.

Guess what the group cites as its justification for such gun control: the drug war. Yes, that war that everyone admits has failed to achieve its objectives despite 45 years of vicious warfare. The task force is saying that reenacting the assault-weapons ban will reduce the drug-war violence that now pervades Mexico.

If I were a believer in extra-terrestrial life, my question would be: What planet are these people from? Do they honestly believe that gun-control intervention is going to alleviate the horrific consequences of their drug-war intervention? Can anyone really be that stupid?

Not likely. My hunch is that these people are simply looking for new excuses for gun control and are latching onto the war on drugs to advance that agenda.

Let’s restate some important principles that are involved here.

The drug-war itself is the root cause of the drug-war violence in Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere. If there were no drug laws — that is, if drugs were legalized — there would be no drug gangs, drug cartels, and drug-war murders, assassinations, robberies, bribery, and the like. All the violence associated with the drug war would disappear for the obvious reason — there no longer would be a drug war.

The black market inevitably attracts an unsavory producer, one who has no reservations about employing violence and political corruption to expand his market share.

Making drugs illegal doesn’t cause consumers to stop desiring drugs. Making them illegal simply makes it more difficult and more expensive for the consumer to acquire them. Thus, oftentimes poor drug users resort to robberies, muggings, and thefts to acquire the money to pay the exorbitant black-market prices for the drugs they seek.

Rarely does this happen in a free and open market. Competitors compete against each other on the basis of such things as quality and price. Generally, prices are within reach of most everyone.

After all, when was the last time you saw Al Capone type of gangs distributing beer? When was the last time you saw a wino mugging someone to get the money to pay for a bottle of wine?

Prohibition-related violence disappeared with the repeal of Prohibition. That’s precisely what would happen if drug prohibition were repealed.

The statist notion — the notion being advanced by the Binational Task Force — is that by reenacting the assault-weapons ban, drug gangs in Mexico would no longer be able to acquire the weaponry to initiate drug-war violence.

That’s ludicrous. For one thing, the drug gangs can acquire weaponry from all over the world. For another, the assault-weapons ban didn’t really ban assault weapons — it simply required modifications of them, such as shorter clips or no bayonet. People could still acquire AR-15s, AK-47s, SKSs and other assault rifles.

What the statists fail to recognize — or perhaps not — is that a fierce war on guns — that is, one waged like the war on drugs — would do nothing more than produce the same type of violence, if not more, than that produced by the war on drugs.

The solution to the failure of interventionism is not more interventionism. The solution is the repeal of interventionism. Americans would be wise to reject the statist recommendations of the Binational Task Force. Contrary to what these people say, it’s not possible to fix their failed war on drugs with a war on guns or with anything else. The only way to end the drug-war violence is by ending the drug war.
