Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson will face interim champion Gilbert Melendez in a five-round rematch at Strikeforce “Evolution” on Dec. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

The bout, which will unify the promotion’s two lightweight titles, had been twice scheduled and cancelled due to injuries sustained by Thomson in 2009.

Thomson’s shutout decision over Melendez in June 2008 is considered one of the high points of the San Jose fighter’s career.

As a 3-to-1 underdog, the American Kickboxing Academy product established confidence with the Pride Bushido star early, and actively used lateral movement to keep Melendez at bay throughout the 25 minutes. The loss marked only the second in the highly touted Melendez’s career, and solidified what many suspected of the Thomson’s potential in the lightweight division.

In his last performance in September 2008, Thomson, 31, made quick work out of an overmatched Ashe Bowman in a non-title bout, cutting down the Lion’s Den prospect in only 74 seconds at Strikeforce’s second event at the Playboy Mansion.

Melendez earned the interim title with a second-round technical knockout of Rodrigo Damm in April 2009. The voracious 27-year-old wrestler defended the title in August when he demolished Mitsuhiro Ishida with strikes inside three rounds. Melendez also holds key victories over standouts Clay Guida and Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Thomson-Melendez II joins a previously announced roster that includes a main-event middleweight bout between Cung Le and Scott Smith, as well as the promotional debut of Muhammed Lawal against Mike Whitehead at heavyweight.

Strikeforce “Evolution” will be broadcast live on Showtime.

The  appalling highlight of this episode was the  ‘other side’  of  Don Chizuru. o.o

„Fünf Monate nach den Wahlen im Iran hat sich die Aufregung hierzulande gelegt: Seit es den Kräften um Präsident Mahmud Ahmadinedschad gelungen ist, die Protestwelle gegen dessen offensichtlichen Wahlbetrug zu brechen, ist das Thema aus den Medien weitgehend verschwunden, und die deutsche Außenpolitik hat sich mit den weiterhin herrschenden Verhältnissen im Land arrangiert. Was bleibt ist der Eindruck, dass eigentlich kaum jemand weiß, wer da im Sommer warum gegen wen gekämpft hat. Welche Triebkräfte waren es, die die „Islamische Republik“ bis an den Rand des Zusammenbruchs destabilisiert haben? Und auf welcher Grundlage kann sie trotzdem fortbestehen?

Mit der Antwort auf diese Fragen tun sich deutsche Beobachter deshalb so schwer, weil ihr Blick auf den Iran durch falsche Prämissen getrübt ist. Zum einen belegen sie das politische System des Landes mit dem Schlagwort des „Mullahregimes“ und suggerieren so die Existenz einer monolithischen Herrscherkaste, die, vergleichbar mit den Parteien sowjetischen Typs, alle Fäden in der Hand hält. Zum anderen bewerten sie die politischen Institutionen des Landes aber anhand der Maßstäbe bürgerlicher Staatlichkeit – weshalb es sich beim Iran in ihrer Wahrnehmung um eine semi-demokratische Republik handelt, die nur wegen des mullahdominierten Wächterrats keine „echte“ Demokratie sein kann.

Tatsächlich sind aber die Mullahs nur eine Interessengruppe unter vielen, und die politische Macht liegt weder (allein) bei ihnen, noch liegt sie – wie im bürgerlichen Staat – bei den Institutionen. Letztere sind im Iran Form ohne Inhalt; über die Politik des Regimes entscheiden nicht sie, sondern die Kräfteverhältnisse der konkurrierenden Interessengruppen, die unterhalb der offiziellen Ebene austariert werden. Entsprechend handelt es sich bei den sogenannten „Sicherheitskräften“, die im Sommer die Protestbewegung niederschlugen, auch weniger um eine Polizei, die im Rahmen eines Gewaltmonopols eine Rechtsordnung aufrechterhalten hätte, als um bewaffnete Banden, die von Achmadinedschad und seinen Leuten ausgeschickt wurden, um seine Position gewaltsam zu sichern.

Wer die wichtigsten Akteure sind, welche Gruppen mit welchen Interessen im Iran für welche politischen Ziele kämpfen, und welche Konstellation im Sommer die Protestbewegung ausgelöst haben könnte, darüber referiert auf Einladung des [a:ka] der Politikwissenschaftler Wahied Wahdat-Hagh. Besonderes Augenmerk legt er dabei auf die Rolle des Islams für das iranische System und auf die Funktion, die der von nahezu allen politischen Kräften geschürte Hass auf Israel bei den jüngsten Auseinandersetzungen gespielt hat.“

I know some folks out there don’t know what a step show is – so I have the following to help give you an idea (courtesy of Wikipedia):

Another form of step dancing, Stepping, has been popularized by National Pan-Hellenic Council. This step dance has African roots and is an African American tradition as well as part of Black History. The members of the fraternities and sororities join in steps — elaborate synchronized group routines that are performed in competitions between the fraternities and sororities called “step shows.” Step shows incorporates cheerleading, military, and drill-team moves, especially the call-and-response element inherent in those forms. These aspects are not only important to the energy of stepping for entertainment use but also for bonding and pride within their organizations.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson rocking the KNOXX Lifestyle Limited Edition “HELLA FRESH” crew neck

Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le will make his much anticipated return to the cage at the promotion’s year-end show “Evolution” on Dec. 19 in San Jose, Calif.

The heavy-handed Scott Smith, in his first appearance since a June submission loss to Nick Diaz at “Shields vs. Lawler,” will welcome the fighter/actor back to the cage.

In September, Le relinquished the middleweight belt citing a busy filming schedule as the reason he was unable to defend his title. He had not defended his title since last March when he defeated Frank Shamrock to win the belt.

The 37-year-old Vietnamese-born fighter recently had a starring role in the major motion picture “Pandorum” starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster and is due on screens this fall in the martial arts flick “Tekken.”

Smith, 30, migrated to Strikeforce last September when his EliteXC contract was bought out by the San Jose promotion. The former union steel worker and UFC veteran defeated Terry Martin and Benji Radach before falling prey to Diaz.

At press time, it was unclear whether the Le/Smith bout would headline the December event.

Well, we’re headed back to the hot as hell hotbed of the San Joaquin Valley tomorrow.  Projekt Label & Promma.info are  throwing the official Strikeforce – Luke Rockhold After Party this Friday night after the Strikeforce Challengers Card in Fresno, CA at Bliss Nightclub. Guest list is unfortunately closed, BUT we’re told they’re gonna open up extra VIP areas for us, so if you wanna go, hit me up and I’ll see what I can do.

The crowd should be stacked.  In attendance will be Luke Rockhold, Dave Camarillo, Josh “The Punk” Thompson, Bobby Southworth, David “Kid Dynamite” Espinoza, and rumor has it Billy Evangelista is going to come hang out as well.  The party is being covered by Fight Magazine, ProMMA, and many other media outlets.  Be there, or be bored after the fights!

Alpha Kappa Alpha Awarded NGO Status From United Nations’ ECOSOC

AKA Sorority Gains United Nations NGO Status

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority established its position as a global influence with the announcement by the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that it had granted AKA Special consultative status. This status, which was engineered by AKA’s international president Barbara A. McKinzie, is granted to Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that have a special competence and are concerned specifically with certain fields of activity covered by the ECOSOC.

This powerful designation enables Alpha Kappa Alpha to promote the aims and objectives of the UN and to further the understanding of its work to AKA members and communities they serve. This status means AKA can now actively engage and consult with the ECOSOC, its commissions and subsidiary bodies. The status also allows AKA to access ECOSOC’s provisional agenda, attend public meetings, make oral presentations, submit written statements for circulation by the UN Secretary-General, participate in preparatory meetings and attend international conferences relevant to its expertise.

Achieving this consultative status gives AKA the leverage to ensure that the United Nations’ human rights mission gains another voice. AKA will focus on gender equality and advancement of women worldwide and will also strengthen international cooperation for social development with particular attention on the core issues of poverty eradication, employment generation and social integration. AKA will also continue its support of its member, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in her mission to rebuild the economy and strengthen governing institutions in the war-torn country. Ambassador Alice Dear, AKA’s NGO representative, and her team, will reinforce Africare’s resolve to address needs in health, agriculture and water resource development. Alpha Kappa Alpha will also add voice in the ECOSOC to the message of its programmatic partner CARE as it addresses the global poverty crisis.

Serving in this key role continues Alpha Kappa Alpha’s long and storied relationship that is rooted in its commitment to human rights and inspired by the activism of one of its founders, Norma Boyd, who laid the foundation for AKA’s participation with the UN.

Alpha Kappa Alpha helped craft the highly-heralded Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, the document around which the mission was defined. The Declaration was inspired by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who so admired AKA’s vigorous advocacy and passion for speaking out against human rights violations that she accepted honorary membership into the Sorority.

This past weekend really had me thinking more than usual about idol worship. Yes, idol worship has been the focus of devotions we’ve been having with our son, Joshua, for the last two weeks, but the weekend brought idols in my face personally. The observation of Halloween on the 31st and my 20 year anniversary of being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. on Nov. 1st had me examine how I have placed the culture above Christianity and thus above God.

Halloween has always been a bit spooky for me so when I found out the demonic roots of this “fun day” for children I didn’t have a problem declaring that mine wouldn’t participate. This was easy when Joshua was younger and being homeschooled. He didn’t recognize the bombardment of the day so the allure was minimal. But this is the first year in public school so his awareness heightened. After learning that witches and goblins are not just harmless fun and don’t give glory to God, Joshua began saying “Halloween is fun” and “I want candy.” We had to re-explain that Halloween is not simple fun but a passive way of glorifying evil and that we could buy him candy. We had to re-teach how God can protect us—just like he did the three Hebrew boys—when we go counter culture. That’s why he couldn’t wear a Halloween costume to school or participate in the Halloween party. And while this was a tough stance, we had to teach him this while he was young so his heart would be less likely to wrench at age 40, when I’ve had to somewhat reluctantly part with my once beloved AKA.

Twenty years ago I pledged the sorority that I had known for a lifetime. My mother was a 37-year member of the group that always exemplified true sisterhood. She and her contemporaries never failed to support each other through illness and death, be it a loss of a loved one, a job or one’s mind. They worked tirelessly to improve the community and were there for times of much-needed fellowship. I wanted this, and, for the most part, got this during my experience but didn’t realize until a few years ago the price I was paying to love AKA deep in my heart.

One morning I went to grab my AKA necklace, but my power to reach the necklace left me. As I tried to reach it, I was met with a force field that prevented my advancement. Standing perplexed and impotent, my sorority’s pledge came to my mind: “To thee, O Alpha Kappa Alpha, we pledge our hearts, our minds, our strength, to foster thy teachings and obey thy laws and make thee supreme in service to all mankind. O Alpha Kappa Alpha, we greet thee.” Though I had said this pledge hundreds of times and in later years in the sorority started to feel weird about personifying AKA, that day I recognized why. This pledge was an offshoot of Mark 12:20 that commands how Christians are to love God: “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this [is] the first commandment.”

The writer of our pledge, though well meaning I’m sure, seemed to be equating the sorority with God. Perhaps she wanted to convey the deep commitment members should have for this illustrious group or the grand place that the sorority should have in our lives. I don’t know, but what I do know is that God says “thou should have no other gods before me.” And with the central focus of AKA in my life and the revelation of our pledge, I realized that I had a god—an idol, that needed to be cast down. This was three years ago. So for me, this year of my 20th anniversary, my sorority reflections are bittersweet. I don’t deny the fellowship or the good AKA does in the world, but I have come to realize that I must deny my commitment to a group that I once allowed to become an idol in my life. This hasn’t been easy and many don’t understand my new stance, but I know that I have to be true to my conviction. Not doing so is denying God’s tug on my heart and Him the place that only He should have.

Det är snart november… och det är snart den 9… vet inte hur många gånger jag har kommit på mig själv tänka på hur jag ska komma i och av tåget.. att maken hjälper mig här att komma på är en sak.. men hur blir det i Göteborg..??? För att inte tala om att jag ska hitta rätt spårvagn etc…

Ända tills jag kommer på mig själv… Ja, just det.. jag åker ju Rondenbussen till Sahlgrenska.. Den går från “stan” kl. 06.55 och är på Sahlgrenska ca kl. 10.15..

Alltså löser det sig… för det är bra med Västtrafik.. att de har 5 bussar i regionen som går fån de olika småstäderna till KSS.. och så då Ronden 5 som går från “stan” förbi KSS och mot Sahlgrenska… Kl. 13.30 går den hem igen.. så jag vet vad jag ska åka hem med i alla fall..

Ja, vänner.. så fungerar min hjärna…

Josh Koscheck and Anthony Johnson have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas.

Koscheck announced Tuesday on his Twitter account that he would be fighting Nov. 21 in Las Vegas in a co-main event fight.

“I got some big fight news for me,” he wrote. “I am fighting Nov 21 in Vegas. Co main event!!! Haha it’s on baby!!!!”

Following Brock Lesnar’s withdrawal from his title defense against Shane Carwin, the scheduled UFC 106 co-main event, Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin, became the main event. Reports surfaced later that the UFC was looking to bolster the card with a new co-main, and that now appears to be the case with Koscheck-Johnson.

Koscheck stopped Frank Trigg at UFC 103 in September to rebound from an upset loss to Paulo Thiago in February. Sherdog.com’s No. 5-ranked welterweight, he has 11 UFC wins and four losses. Johnson, 8-2, has won three straight in the Octagon. Most recently he stopped Yoshiyuki Yoshida on Oct. 24.
