Yesterday, i’ve just received my brand new toy (well, not so new…), an Akai S3000 sampler!

As a bonus, i’ve had the pleasing surprise to learn that there’s already an hard drive installed in it, plus extended memory, so i won’t have to deal with floppys drama. So, all i got to do right now is to learn how to use that big metal box…

Dude mashed through his set on the mpd with surgical dexterity despite being admittedly sloshed, this video gives you at taste of what homie can do.

His latest and last album is called egadz is dead, and at aforementioned show he said it would be the last night he was performing under said moniker, citing a desire to move on to a new project.

No one I know keeps his ear to the ground like Todd. Between his connecs in the music biz and his sharp eye for talent, he’s managed to work with some really gifted artists. Most recently, he’s been globetrotting with his latest artist, Nosaj Thing, who’s quietly become the face of LA’s burgeoning underground electronic music scene.

Nosaj’s debut album, Drift, is a good soundtrack for some of those rainy days. But it’s his live show that really seals it. Watching him gyrate sweatily over his Akai MPD-32 is oddly hypnotic; as he splices in Portishead or Busta Rhymes acapellas, it’s easy to forget that he’s this soft-spoken Korean kid from Pasadena. Live Electronic music has always suffered from the lack of a visible performance aspect, which has prompted acts like Glitch Mob to tilt their controllers towards the audience. But somehow, even though it’s hard to tell whether he’s actually manipulating anything, Nosaj manages to engage the audience.

In the video below, he breaks down his live set a bit, which simply involves his laptop, Ableton Live, and the MPD (which also triggers his light show). You can peep more of Nosaj Thing’s music in the sidebar music player.

Akai is famous for their tradition in making samplers and recording machines.
The MPC500 is one of the last sampler produced in a world ruled by softsamplers, let’s understand why…
The MPC series is a sampler and sequencer combo that made history.
The MPC60 (the first MPC ever!) was the evolution of the sampling drum machine LINN 9000, a really revolution in the drum machine contest in the 80s.
The MPC concept is basicly a drum/percussion sampler with a powerful midi sequencer inside a box with sensitive touch pads.
That combination seems like a little rhythm making studio in a box, because you ‘re not limited to standard drum sounds but you can sample your own sounds and use it in combination with the sequencer to create a composition that’s something more than a rhythm.
After the 60 came the 3000 that offered more memory and some adds like easy scsi storage, than the 2000 that enhanced the possibilities of the machine with graphic editing and the 2000xl with multi timbral and melodic capabilities.
The top of the line during the 2000xl period was the MPC4000 , a large MPC that used the Z4/Z8 sampling engine (a standard sampler , not geared only towards beat making) with a big sequencer, control surface…

After the the 2000xl and 4000 Akai started a third generation MPCs: the 1000 and than the 500 , 2500 and now the 5000.
The new mpcs have a new dimensions that’s to compensate softsampler limits and the stability, they take the mpc concept a step ahead , to create somenthing that does not compete with softwares but that can be used with sw and workhorse for live duty.

The MPC 500 is the lighter and cheaper model of the serie, it lacks some interesting features of its bigger bros but has some winning points!
First It’s important to say what the 500 miss:

graphic editing of the samples

the sequencer has 48 midi tracks instead of 64

12 pads instead of 16

no individual outs

the volume of outs in this machine is lower than the others MPC.

the rubber sensitive pads are harder to on the touch, it seems you have to push them harder to get velocity 127!

The graphic editing is important on machine like this if you want to use it as a standalone production tool, but it has usb, and CF card for storage so you can edit and load or save your samples on your computer and it’s a fast operation, no sds midi dumps or scsi connections…

The sequencer has 48 tracks instead of 64… well 48 tracks for pattern are a lot, I don’t feel like missing the 64tracks using the MPC500…

12 pads instead of 16… well it maybe a limitation but I find useful instead!
When I use tuned samples 12 pads are like 1 octv keyboard, so I use to samples one sound for octv and then with 4 samples I can play a 4 oct sound without the feeling of loosing the “reality” of the sound, because 1 sample does not stretch too much.
And using the 12 levels the sample has 1 octv play!

The 500 has only the stereo out, and this is a limitation if you want to do record a bunch oof tracks at the same time, but if this is not your need the absence of the multi outs is not a bad miss.

One important aspect of this machine is the particular “low” volume output.
In a A-B test with the MPC2000xl the 500 outputs half the volume of the 2000 with an headroom set not to have distortion or degradation of the sound.
I think at AKAI designed this machine as a battery operated , so to let the batterys last longer they reduced the amplification consumption, leading to a lower volume.
I ‘m honest, this is one of the things I don’t really like in the 500, because this aspect influences the sound, annd if you want a “clean” sound you have not to push the headroom to 0dB and stay calm with the mixer section.
The more you try to pump the sound from the internal volumes, the more it sound harsh or with a light distortion on higher frequencies.
But if the volume are set in the right way (70/80 on the mixer, and a headroom of minimum 6dB) everything works very well, the sound is clean and punchy.
The only way to get the 500 pump louder is to rise the volume on your mixer or use a preamp/compressor.

The sensibility of the pads is another downfall of the 500.
They have a particular curve that can be tricky to manage at first.
To get a velocity value 127 you have to thump really hard, so my use of the velocity with the pads is quite limited…
I usually tend to switch velocity to 100% and play the main rhythm (kick and snare ) then I switch velocity on and start playng with the note repeat in order to make a quantised rhythm with velocity movements.
The other alternative is to record every track with velo at 100% and then edit the velocity using the slider in realtime.

Apart from these points the 500 has some major strenghts!

It’s superportable, superslim!

Battery powered

USB connectivity and CF card drive

A SUPERB timing!

A great sequencer that can control the onboard sampler together with other midi devices

It’s really easy to use

onboard effects are ok

can work as a multitimbral sound generator with /without using its own sequencer.

Multimode filters are good and are realtime effective (not on the previous models)

Sounds really good (if you don’t push your headroom to 0 dB!)

The sampler engine is complete with even resampling and easy editing.
The sound engine is well thought and has indipendent multimode filters , AD envelope, two efx with send/insert, mute groups…
The 12 levels (to play the sample chromatically) works as on the previous models, and the interesting aspect is that every motion recorded is realtime and fluid.
All in all this little machine has many strong features and some minor letdown (the hard sensitive pads and the “not so high” volume) but can be really useful to many task in every kind of music, and could be the portastudio for hip hop & R’n’B producers who want to compose in the park or in the subway…

Is it wrong that right after a post extolling the virtues of vinyl and bemoaning the closure of another record store that I post about by burgeoning interest in digital djing using micro-controllers?

I don’t think so.

DJTechTools just did a very interesting post comparing (inter alia) the Korg NanoPad with the Akai LPD8. Of course, as soon as I saw the Akai’s 8 pads and 8 knobs, my head was spinning with potential Traktor layouts. I had to buy one. Then I had to YouTube it and see what other people were doing:

Needless to say, it’s got me thinking. Given the sudden influx of micro-controllers onto the market, will we see them taken up by professional djs as new portable djing solutions? I mean, we’ve already seen that Russ Chimes djs with little more than a Nocturn and analogue mixer – but why stop there?

This is my new ableton live DJ setup:

Ableton Live DJ Setup

8 Tracks total broken down as follows:

Track 8: Turntable B
Track 7: Turntable A
Track 6: set up to grab loops in real time from 7 or 8 (see “Loop Grab” below)
Track 5: open, prob for beat loops
Tracks 1-4: “Crates”
Send A: Ping Pong
Send B: Open
Send C: Routes all incoming audio to Deck A
Send D: Routes all incoming audio to Deck B

Tracks 1-6: output to Sends Only
Buttons assigned for each of 1-6, such that it toggles – one push turns up send C to 127 and send D to 0 (zero), a second push flips this. The result: any clip on any of the first six tracks can be routed to Turntable A/B (tracks 7 or 8).

Clip Preparation

I take each clip and put it through Mixed in Key, renaming the file as
Key – BPM – Track Name

Next, each track is broken down into parts – with different start points and sometimes even loops. This enables me to jump around from section to section of songs.

Here’s the trick:

I use Track 2 as a copy of Track 1, and Track 4 as a copy of Track 3. Why?

Well, if I route 1 to Deck A and 2 to Deck B, then I can jump around in a song arrangement by triggering different sections, and then cross-fading between the channels.

Loop Grab

I use Bome’s midi translator for a few things, such as the send toggle on tracks 1-6. I also use it to convert a button push into a series of key strokes. One button on my controller routes audio from Turntable A into track 6 and arm it for record. Another button turns off the routing to track 6 and puts it back into play mode. Similarly, a button routes audio from Turntable B into track 6 and arms it. Again, another button disables this.

The routing occurs by sending Turntable A/B into Send E, and Send E is setup to route to Channel 6.

The key here is muting channel 6 during recording b/c if you don’t, it will create a feedback loop!

This technique allows me to grab various parts of whatever is playing, do it in real time, and work it back into the mix. Now I am just playing with this, though I’m not entirely committed to it… Given how every track is cut up, I can already trigger parts of songs… so I’m not sure if I’ll use this feature, but we’ll see!

Bome’s midi translator

At some point I’ll be posting a video of how the rig is set up w/the APC40. While I recently picked it up, and have enjoyed figuring it out, I am very much looking forward to max4 live (I have no max experience at all) — I suspect it will be a lot more powerful, and run native, with respect to modifying the APC setup.

Posting the set, Follow me on Twitter

If you have any questions, hit me up.

At some point I’ll also post the ableton setup w/bomes w/the video… can’t promise when, given life’s busy but I hope to do it soon. In the meantime, follow me on twitter @loopscious.

Watching the Anime wasn’t enough…
Additionally we watched the live action movie.
The movie wasn’t as dramatic as the Anime…
SooO we decided ..
Hmm why not attempt and make the Anime version into Reality~
And that’s what we did!
It’s just a Beta and we just did it for fun xD
We decided to add better dramatic effects when we have the time~
Note: That’s why it’s just a Beta.. xD
Well~
We hope you Enjoy ^^V

.

| This film is clearly fan-made |
.
Death 1# Dies from pooping
Death 2# Dies from picking nose
Death 3-5# Die from heart attacks
The person in the computer is our best mate Calvin (wearing red)
Death 6# Dies from falling backwards
Death 7# Dies from tripping over shoe
Death 8# Dies from seizure (played by Henry ^^)
Death 9# Dies from drinking
.
You should watch our vid with the original Anime at the same time (ep 1)
It’s pretty close I guess xD
Atleast we had fun!! ^^V
It took us 4-5hours to edit and film.
Just for 1minute xD
How epikly crazy~

We’re thinking of make ep 1 as well xD

Well that’s if we get the time…

It’s so annoying having games delayed!!

Tekken 6 was supposedly coming out in September.

and found out it wasn’t coming out until October.

Seeing Tekken 6 with a sign saying ‘Coming Soon’ we headed over to the worker in Ebgames and asked when it was officially coming out.

The person working there said it was going to come out on 27th November.

So…our suspense began to build for the ULTIMATE GAME!

The day had finally arrived!!

But unfortunately…
