I don’t use Akismet on my self hosting blog anymore since maybe I have enough reasons:

I don’t need it for my little website for now. I don’t have much enough spam comments as well because I use captcha for registration and comment. Since then no more unwanted registrations and comments.

Akismet actually is a blacklist to me although they said not (sorry Akismet). Because I have prove and logic. I don’t know which criteria makes a comment as a spam for Akismet. And I know the options of “Don’t discard spam on old posts”, “An administrator must always approve the comment”, “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”, “Hold a comment in the queue if it contains … or more links.” of WordPress. I mean you are always flagged as spam anywhere once Akismet caught you. Akismet will take care of comments that are flagged as spam as to that options unchecked will prevent tons of spam comments going to your folder. The funny thing is that I have previously approved comment and when I came back to comment again with same name, email but this time with my website URL filled in box is flagged as spam. Nothing showed. Nothing words like “your comment is awaiting for approval”, moderation or something. It went to spam folder, didn’t it?

I think a spam is unintelligible comment with many words and URLs is usually generated by robot or script or machine software, not an ordinary legit comment that has link(s) in it.

If using captcha works, why do I have to use Akismet still?

Maybe I will lose any good information by using Akismet anyway.

And this is what I call spam. It’s generated by random machine. Usually used for forum with common [tag]:

Submitted!

Thank you! Your bits are flying through cyberspace towards us as you read this. We’ll get back to you ASAP.

* Note about this question. You might wonder, if these guys are so good at spam blocking why would they put a stupid question like this on their contact form to keep spam out? Well, Akismet is great at protecting contact forms, we use it on all our other sites, but on Akismet.com sometimes people use the contact form to tell us they’re being blocked by Akismet.

If you think about that, blocking people when they’re trying to tell us they’re wrongly blocked would probably frustrate them, hence the math question.

Unfortunately, the math question, like most non-adaptive anti-spam measures, is already being defeated and spambots are being written that can parse and solve basic math equations.

Well this is the second time I contact you that I might hope any reply for sure.

You used to warn about me being a spammer in your list. How come? What have I done? Could you prove it? Are you sure you are the best anti spam? Because heck I use you on my blog.

Regard.

That was my second form to Akismet. Now I can only wait for the answer.

I don’t know what’s goin’ on here. If Mark-WordPress told me to remove any affiliate links anywhere on my blog, I already did that. You couldn’t find any of them on this blog. Now what? What’s the connection between WordPress and Akismet?! Because this problem came up together at the same time.

Does Akismet mean that NO LINK AT ALL for being a something legit to them? Is that a true stupid answer?

This is a comment taken from http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/548/switching-to-akismet-for-anti-spam/ :

On November 11, 2009 at 4:43 am George Hamilton said:

Akismet is a joke service. My comments are flagged as “spam” . Funny thing is i never ever entered any website info when i am commenting. I have dynamic IP and changing IP address doesnt work. And i live in a city with 6 million population. I think they banned entire city IP addresses. I am asking to akismet to put a live “false spam marked” counter. Akismet is the worst spam protection addon for wordpress.

If no one can advise me of this problem, then maybe I’m in the way of Anti Akismet-WordPress and start using another free PHP source code like Joomla, Drupal or something.

Help me please?!

In my calculation, more than 70 per-cent of comments posted to date on this blog are spams in the six weeks it has been online.

Big deal? No, not really. Akismet is a friend to WP bloggers. Well, at least to some.

So what is this Akismet?

It is a plugin or software that deletes or “kills spam” in comments and trackbacks. It is an “Automattic production” and native to WordPress.

As of this writing, 3:30pm AEST 27 Oct, Akismet reported that it had caught more than 13 billion spams since it started more than 3 years ago, and that 83 per-cent of all comments are spam, a fair estimate considering that for emails about 88 per-cent are spam according to reports.

Here’s a screenshot of an Akismet stats page (time-stamping is mine to jog my memory):

In its early years, I gather that Akismet had received a lot of complaints from WP users. Quite understandable, I think. The plugin was new, and it is the type of plugin that can only be perfected through actual practice. Akismet has to update its database and lexicon of words and phrases of words used in spamming.

The plugin also needed to learn from patterns of comment spams and feedback from users.

After more than 3 years, we could only expect Akismet to be more effective and more learned than when it started.

That said, it does not mean that you should leave Akismet totally on its own.

From time to time, you need to check your blog’s spam queue. There may be comments from friends mistakenly considered as spams by Akismet.

For example, today when I checked my blog’s spam queue, I found one comment posted about a week ago by another WP blogger. I guess the reason why that comment was caught was that in the comment was URL of the page I was being invited to visit. I am not sure here, I am only guessing.

Anyway, the point I am driving home is that we should not leave everything to Akismet. We still have to do some work.

Two things we can do:

1. As mentioned above, check your blog’s spam queue. If there are any comments which should not be considered as spams, you simply approve the comments to remove them from the spam queue. Just like with emails, from time to time we need to check our Spam folders. Sometimes, spam filters get so over-zealous and over-protective that even legit messages are being erroneously classified as spams.

2. Check your blog’s settings. On a WP blog’s Settings | Discussion page, there are two options you could configure to “teach” how Akismet should behave. These are the “Comment Moderation” and “Comment Blacklist” options. Why not put them to good use and fine-tune Akismet?

I hope this post helps. Here’s to a spam-free blogging.

Got a question for the more experienced–or perhaps I should say, the more computer-savvy

Got a question for the more experienced–or perhaps I should say, the more computer-savvy–bloggers out there. What the heck is the deal with these people who come to your blog and leave comments like the following:

CC8gNK whlmalxnhjfk, [url=http://ngobpdstuqky.com/]ngobpdstuqky[/url], [link=http://kxhymhnynisi.com/]kxhymhnynisi[/link], http://kwgyvvf dasvy.com/?

I get these all the time, both on this blog and on the Dames of Dialogue blogand I have to wonder about the people who leave them. Do they really expect any blogger to approve their useless and unreadable comments or click on the link they usually include somewhere in that gobblety-gook of letters? I never do, instead I delete each and every one of them–and yes, I broke the links on this one before I posted it. Still, I suppose if a reader is desperate enough, they can figure out what I did and reconstruct the URL, but seriously, is there anyone out there who wants to do that? I doubt it, but just in case, click at your own risk!

Some of them are sneaky though, and actually take the time to type a legible sentence or two that pertains to the entry they’re pretending to be commenting on…but Akismet always catches them and sends them straight to my Spam folder.

Akismet is like a lifeguard who never goes off duty, constantly patrolling the beaches of WordPress, tossing out numerous nets to snare all those unwanted visitors to our blogs, thereby saving us from drowning in the mire of stupid and senseless advertisements for things only an idiot would buy and probably don’t work anyway.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, thank heaven for Akismet!

Well, the term has evolved due to the demise of a well known literary cliché called Spamming. A spammer could be appropriately called Virtual Confidencer.

When Umberto Eco said: ‘one can only have a ball with clichés’— he was obviously meaning something, a reference to usage. I am sinning, by declicheing. Spammers who flock the virtual word like nuisance sheep, here’s to your virtual honor: ‘cheers’! Akismet is honesty-virtuous. Note here, folks–‘virtuous’ has become virtual-friendly to meaning. So, virtuous has become virtual born- again into the virtual space of existence.
