I will never let you down again. That i promise…

Watch out Linköping, we´r gonna get ya….

Avslutar inlägget med en av mina all time favorites. Techno när den var som bäst……

Defending Egypt’s Flag

By Alaa Al-Aswany

November 24, 2009

On November 14, 1935 Egypt was seething with protests against the British occupation and a large demonstration set off from Cairo University with thousands of students who began chanting slogans in favour of independence and democracy. The students lifted up one of their colleagues, Mohamed Abdel Magid Mursi from the faculty of agriculture, and he was holding high an Egyptian flag when English troops opened fire on him and killed him. As soon as the Egyptian flag fell to the ground another student, Mohamed Abdel Hakam el-Garahi from the faculty of humanities, rushed to pick it up. An English officer threatened to kill Abdel Hakam if he took a step forward but Abdel Hakam walked on, carrying the flag. The officer fired at him and hit him in the chest. He was taken to hospital, where he breathed his last. All Egypt turned out to say farewell to the martyr, who preferred death to seeing the Egyptian flag fall to the ground. On the first day of the war of October 1973, dozens of Egyptian soldiers gave their lives so that the Egyptian soldier Mohamed Efendi could plant the Egyptian flag in Sinai for the first time since it was occupied. So the flag is not just a piece of cloth but a symbol of the nation, of honour and dignity. I thought about that when I saw my country’s flag trampled underfoot by the Algerian thugs in Sudan, with some of them taking pleasure in throwing it under cars, driving over it, tearing it up and burning it. The brutal attacks on Egyptians in Khartoum revealed several facts:

Firstly, it’s common at football matches for fights to break out between the supporters, but what happened in Khartoum went way beyond fights over football. Algerian air force planes had brought thousands of armed Algerian thugs to Khartoum with a specific assignment: to attack and insult the Egyptians. The testimony of the victims all indicates that the purpose of the attack was to humiliate the Egyptians. What else could it mean when Algerians took off their underwear in front of Egyptian women, exposed their private parts and chanted in unison: “We’re going to screw Egypt”? What was their purpose in forcing Egyptian men to lie down on the ground even after assaulting them with knives and swords? What was their purpose in carrying banners reading “Egypt is the mother of whoredom”? Does this despicable behaviour have anything to do with football? This rabble cannot represent the great Algerian people who fought with us in the war of October 1973 and whose martyrs shed their blood alongside ours. So why this insistence on humiliating Egyptians in this way when the Algerians had won the match? I would understand it if this was the work of an army of foreign occupation but it is truly saddening that it should be the work of Arabs. Would any Algerian allow his sister or his mother to be subjected to this kind of intimidation and outrage? The sight of the Egyptian victims weeping on television at the indignity and humiliation cannot be erased from the memory of Egyptians until we bring to account those responsible for this criminal assault.

Secondly, Egypt is the biggest Arab country and the greatest source of human talent in the Arab world. It was Egyptians who brought about the renaissance in many Arab countries. The universities were set up by Egyptian professors and the newspapers were set up by Egyptian journalists. The institutes of art, cinema and theatre were set up by Egyptian artists. The cities and houses were built by Egyptian architects, the hospitals were set up by Egyptian doctors and even the laws and constitutions there were mostly drawn up by Egyptian law professors. The Algerian national anthem itself was composed by the Egyptian composer Mohamed Fawzi. This special Egyptian status has made the relationship between Egyptians and other Arab peoples a composite, including love and admiration most of the time and sometimes some touchiness and tension. During the period when Nasserist Arab nationalism was on the rise, Egypt supported the Algerian revolution with money and weapons, defended it at international forums, sent its army to support the Yemeni revolution and went to war to defend Palestine and Syria. At that time the feelings of the Arabs towards Egypt were of pure love but as soon as Egypt stopped performing its pan-Arab mission and signed the Camp David agreements with Israel, all the resentments against Egypt came to the surface. I do not have space here to enumerate the dozens of examples of the constant attempts by some Arabs to humiliate Egyptians and denigrate their role and their influence, starting with the way Egyptians in the Gulf have been subjected to the slavery of the ’sponsorship’ system, mistreated and denied their rights, then with the way big production companies have often been set up specifically to exclude or marginalize Egyptian talent, and finally with cultural competitions and festivals held annually at a cost of millions of dollars merely to prove that Egypt is no longer in the forefront of culture and art. All of these are of course desperate, abortive and ineffective attempts, firstly because in spite of all Egypt’s difficult circumstances these petty people cannot detract from Egypt’s status and secondly because the Egyptians, an Arab people, cannot deny their Arab identity or dissociate themselves from their Arab brothers whatever the circumstances might be.

Thirdly, the Egyptian regime’s cooperation with Israel, providing it with gas and cement and taking part in the blockade of Palestinians by closing the Rafah crossing, are mistaken and dishonorable policies unacceptable first and foremost to Egyptians themselves, who have demonstrated daily in solidarity with their brothers in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon. In fact many Egyptians have paid a high price for their Arab nationalist attitudes, most recently well-known journalist Magdy Ahmed Hussein, who travelled to Gaza in solidarity with the Palestinians under blockade there, was arrested by the Egyptian authorities and sent to a military court which sentenced him to two years in jail. The Egyptian regime’s position towards Israel does not at all represent the position of the Egyptian people and cannot be used as a pretext to attack and insult Egyptians.

Fourthly, the attack on Egyptians in Khartoum was a form of state terrorism in which the Algerian regime was implicated, abetted by the negligence and corruption of the Egyptian regime and its inability to protect Egyptians. A whole week passed after the crime was committed without the Egyptian regime taking a firm and decisive position. Those who expect President Mubarak to restore the lost dignity of Egyptians will have a long wait. What has President Mubarak done for the hundreds of Egyptians detained in Saudi Arabia? What has he done for the Egyptian doctors sentenced to be flogged there? What has he done for the Egyptians tortured in Kuwait? What has President Mubarak done for the Egyptian soldiers killed by Israel on the border, or for the families of the Egyptians whom Israel admits it massacred in war? The answer is always: nothing. Egyptians have lost their rights at home and abroad. Why did the Egyptian authorities allow the Algerian player Lakhdar Belloumi to escape after he committed a horrendous crime in Cairo, knocking out the eye of an innocent Egyptian doctor? Would Belloumi have been allowed to escape if he had committed his crime in a respectable democratic country? Would the series of Algerian attacks on Egyptians have continued if Belloumi had been arrested in Egypt and put on trial? The rights of citizens are enforced only in a democratic system, whereas the only concern of despotic regimes is to retain power by any means and at any price. The ruler who usurps power, oppresses his people and falsifies the will of the people at election time cannot convince anyone when he talks about the dignity of citizens. The crime of insulting and humiliating Egyptians in this disgusting way cannot go without questioning or punishment and if the Egyptian regime is unable to hold these criminals to account then it is the duty of us all as Egyptians to put pressure by all means available on the Algerian regime until it makes an official apology to the Egyptian people, arrests the Algerians who attacked Egyptians and puts them on trial. We should never repay one offence with another and we should not confuse the great Algerian people with the despotic Algerian regime which is responsible for this crime. But the time has come for everyone to understand that from now on attacking Egyptians will not be easy or without consequences, not at all. Insisting that those who offended our dignity be punished in no way contradicts our pan-Arab commitment, because, as the proverb says, a debt paid is a friend kept, and fraternal relations between the Algerian and Egyptian peoples can come about only through respect for the rights of all Egyptians and Algerians.

Democracy is the solution.

At the newsroom In the aftermath of the Egypt-Algeria game in Sudan, and as we frantically were gath

At the newsroom

In the aftermath of the Egypt-Algeria game in Sudan, and as we frantically were gathering information and contacts for our coverage, we also had to sit down and discuss the flood of information – or the lack of it at times.

Every TV show on Wednesday night had covered the ordeal of those who traveled to Sudan. Phone calls were pouring in from those frightened by attacks by Algerian fans and those who can’t get to or inside the airport. People we spoke to for our stories weren’t short of their own horror stories.

But it seemed to be only in Egypt’s mind, because on the other hand, the news agencies either ignored it or referred to it as minor incidents. By Friday morning I started doubting myself. There were two parallel worlds, one where people were traumatized and another where nothing of significance happened.

Pictures were only available of the game, but no photos on the wires of what happened afterwards. But as my friend — a person I trust who gave me a first hand account of his experience there — told me, “Our first reaction when attacked was not to take pictures, but to protect ourselves.”

He did send me photos of the shattered windows of their bus, which we ran in the paper.

But this led to some important questions: How accurate are the reports we are getting? How can we validate them? It’s not possible that thousands have agreed on one story, but are they exaggerating? Are we falling in the trap of sensationalization? Are we getting too caught up in the details that we are failing to see the bigger picture?

Seeing the media frenzy that followed was also worrying. The state-run official satellite station, El-Masreya, ran footage of the Thursday night demonstration. (For those of you who don’t know, for state TV and media, demos don’t happen). Many TV shows crossed the line (not a fine line) that separates coverage to outward agitation of the masses, some even calling for targeting Algerians in Egypt. It’s the same type of irresponsible media that fueled the masses in Algeria with false reports. (Mainly the death of Algerians during the game in Egypt, which the Algerian government denied. The denial didn’t find a place in some newspapers that had confirmed these alleged deaths.)

Alaa Mubarak speaking on TV (a rare occurrence for the media shy son), the initial tolerance for the protests near the Algerian embassy, and the liberty in which media was allowed to report on and fuel the anger were factors to consider.

After the initial story that ran in the Friday edition, we ran more stories the following day: more eyewitnesses’ accounts, the diplomatic relations between Egypt and Algeria, a story about Alaa Mubarak speaking on TV, and of course a story about the demonstrations that took place on Thursday and Friday.

But in doing so, we tried to be careful with the wording. Not sensational but not subdued either. Report it as is. Focus on the facts. I hope we didn’t mess up or miss a word here or there.

Objectivity, the first lesson any journalist learns, can sometimes seem like an elusive goal.

My take on the frenzy: When did Alaa become the hero?

After sending the paper to print and during the two days I took off, I had the chance to talk to more people, not about their experience in Sudan but about their reactions here in Cairo to the whole thing.

The most worrying realization was that many felt more humiliated by this incident than the numerous tragedies that have marred our recent history: from train accidents to the death of over 1,000 people over the course of few hours when their ferry sank in the Red Sea (and the subsequent escape of its owner).

I’m not trying to belittle the incident or what people have went through last week in Sudan. I don’t have the slightest doubt that this happened. Although it’s difficult to prove with material evidence, since people were running away from the attacks rather than clashing with the attackers, it’s still traumatizing for any person to be chased down the streets of a foreign city (or their hometown for that matter). Whether the Algerian government is complicit in this by intentionally allowing more violent fans to travel needs to be probed. Justice needs to be served. The failure of the Sudanese security to enforce order and protect its Egyptian visitors needs to addressed as well. We also need to revise the official response after the bus carrying the Algerian players was pelted by stones on their way from the airport.

But let’s put it all in perspective.

This incident is given more space, in state and private media, than other more tragic ones. Without scientific research, it’s easy to notice the difference between portraying the ordeal of the fans who returned and the ordeal of the families that spent nights (stress the ‘s’ here) in Red Sea towns waiting for news on the fate of their loved ones after the ferry sank in 2006. No masses were agitated on the scale we saw over the weekend. No actors or singers cried on live TV from the shock of it. No one felt humiliated when the case was referred to misdemeanor court or that the owner of the ferry was tried in absentia, because he left the country. Not in disguise but like any respectable citizen traveling abroad with the seal of government consent on his forehead.

Remember no people were chased down streets or had their buses pelted with stones then; they were merely left to die in freezing water and their corpses were left floating in open water, all 1,035 of them.

It’s only when the anger would be directed to an outside enemy is it allowed to be fueled and to mushroom. And not any enemy. People were beaten in Tahrir in March 2003 when they tried to march to the US embassy to protest the Iraq War. They were described as barbaric and accused of vandalism. Last week, the media and the ministry of interior (which usually takes days to issue a statement, that if they decided to acknowledge the existence of an incident) hailed the protest at the Algerian embassy that left a lot of shattered glass in Zamalek as “civilized.”

This has led many to the verge of hysteria and some willingly fell off that cliff. The hysteria I’m talking about here can be summarized in the willingness of many to attack any person just because he or she is Algerian. Someone, usually sane, told me over the weekend he would randomly attack any Algerian he sees in Cairo. What about XX, an Algerian friend? What if the man you are attacking has just spoken in your favor? What if it’s a woman? An old woman?

This hysteria won’t only have violent irreversible repercussions but has the ability of distracting people from the right ways to seek justice and also other important issues on the local front.

The idea that Egyptians are allowing many to cash in on their ordeal is equally worrying. Aside from celebrities, Alaa Mubarak’s phone interjection on TV has left me speechless.

Suddenly, the business-savvy son of the president who’s been in power for 28 years has become the hero. He’s angry, he wants to avenge the masses and like the rest of the Egyptians he feels humiliated. Suddenly, he is speaking against Egypt’s policy of political posturing, a policy that thrived during his father’s reign (except for selected enemies).

Alaa’s popularity is off the chart. The past 28 years and his other ‘business interjections’ were instantly forgiven and forever forgotten.

Sorry, but I draw the line here: When Alaa rises in popularity as hysteria reigns.

Dear Dr. Alaa, First of all, I would like to convey my deepest respect to you and to the successful

Dear Dr. Alaa,

First of all, I would like to convey my deepest respect to you and to the successful example you set for me personally (and I believe for many others), I always found your intellect daring the exact much youth need in Egypt. You impressed me profoundly when you addressed so many issues in your novels and works, and audaciously strode beyond what most people thought was taboo for mere societal and fake religious reasons.

I find your honesty the most important of your skills – and yes, I chose the word skill, because you add dexterity to it, and it was eminent among so many other inept and badly articulated views that probably desired to reach the same goals you achieved – to change how people think.

I don’t fail also to mention that your reach was never less successful, I always say: “What I like about Dr. Alaa is that he managed to speak people minds and experiences in ways they themselves would’ve probably never been able to compose, and that he knew exactly what people wanted to read about – liberating ideas”.

Yes, your themes connoted not ‘freedom of speech’, but ‘freedom of thought’, you managed to point me to some walls I’ve been hiding behind, to warn me about certain paths I might unconsciously choose, you professionally narrated how misjudgment and lack of religious integrity can lead to absolute calamity.

Until I stumbled upon your articles in Shorouk News. I must say, I was quite awed at the number of people who listen to you, given how recent you started to write your columns there. I found myself apt to be slighty confused at some of your views!

I will speak level. I will choose individual and communal; and please forgive my subjective remarks, after all they belong to my own understanding of the prospect, which is prevalent for generalizing around here, a thing I assume I shouldn’t be concerned with, addressing someone as perceptive as you are.

To be clear on things, I had to be sure that you stand against what you chose to call: ‘Wahabis’, and that you find their prude and hard line ways of preaching ‘religion’ to people one of the reasons that deformed ‘true religion itself’ in people’s minds. And because religion sunk down as an important deterrent from huge individual and societal flaws, we turned into one big false country, on most aspects.

You very clearly distinguished between ‘true religion’ and ‘false religion’, the latter conveying appearances and images, and the earlier concerning ‘currently more important issues’; namely: individual discipline and societal general moral (and here I remember the infamous couplet we hear in media: “accept others”). I wholeheartedly agree.

What I find quite difficult to understand, is that you somehow intertwined the ‘perpetrator with the victim’, as exactly as you accused the society of ‘blaming women for sexual harassment instead of men’, only, and that’s what utterly frustrated me, you knew better.

Excuse my unprofessional unstructured writing, but I’ll get back to why I think your accusations are inaccurate later. I forgot my own two levels; individual and communal. Here I go.

Individual:

As an individual who reads a novel like ‘Chicago’, and from a narrow perspective that works with how I live my personal life, I immediately accuse one of your heroines of being a criminal. If I don’t do that, this would mean two things: either I don’t have enough religious awareness in me to tell me that promiscuity/adultery is illegal, or that I root for irreligion generally (the honest way – the ‘religion won’t work anymore’ way). If, personally, I don’t categorize the acts described in your novel as wrong, I might do them! It’s just a line I draw for myself.

Communal:

To say that she’s a criminal isn’t only shortsighted but overly naive. And I guess that’s exactly what your message was. You, most amazingly really, brought to our minds that on the high level, bigger falls exist! Ones that relate to authority, repression, hypocrisy and debauchery. Ones that, if people are a little bit more mindful, qualify for more than very strong leaders to all other kinds of falls. And here, it’s a sign of acumen to regard her as a victim and sympathize with anyone in her shoes. Or, to at least consider her sin minor in comparison.

—

Now, allow me to elaborate on the example you talked about here. The ‘let’s pray right now, embezzler’ person you scolded. I find his predicament very similar to the victim’s in your novel. Sorry, but I’ll bore you with my so called levels again:

Individual:

If I opt for ‘not praying’ to sate whoever thinks the society’s corruption won’t be solved by those ’shallow acts’, then I’m absolutely wrong. If I wake up and stopped any of my religious practices, then I’m becoming worse. The whole idea is to correct religion’s image. To berate or urge to stop any of those acts, in my humble opinion, is not a solution. It’s just useless prose. Because whether we like it or not, it’s an essential part of religion.

Communal:

This man should be sent into exile. But let’s recap for a moment. Aren’t the ‘big factors’ the punch line here as well? What, I honestly wonder, made him the criminal on this level while she was the victim? Why have we decided to drop ‘repression’ for instance? And more importantly, why do I feel that our accusation became more severe just because he had a religious image? and I wish it was severe to ‘deter him’, but it was rather severe as an attack at religion itself (more specifically, the general concept of ‘being religious’), and sadly, the ones who preach it.

—

Have I made it clear that the two examples are quite similar? I hope I did.

And here I return to your accusations:

You say that ‘Wahabis’ caused a lapse in our societal development, while in fact, what caused the lapse is that they’ve been always hindered obnoxiously by the regime the moment they get near that communal line. And you know that! The moment they start using your very own words “Democracy and free choice, current politicians should change”, they get arrested, tortured and imprisoned for life. And you know that!

What’s left of their censored media are some satellite channels (a thing that severely mutilated the education factor), in a very malicious and sly move by the regime. All those preachers are scientists and certified scholars, who know exactly what you mean by ‘true religion’, and who agonize as exactly as you do over those sick false religious figures you mentioned. And you really should know that their message is affected severely by other types of media (the man is an outcome of all miseries).

I could detect a logical error in your list here, you say we’ve changed the way we approach ‘women’, because we’re considering them tools for satisfying our lust. And you blame that ‘look’ on those ‘Wahabis’! This is really weird. You somehow, also, are accusing them of indirectly being a part of a crime like sexual perpetration. This is just wrong ya Dr! I just know that you know better!

Are you saying that if those ‘Wahabis’ disappeared for instance, we will regard women differently? I really doubt. If their metaphors are that inopportune to your liking, then the most you could do is to comment on their ways, not accuse them of what people (affected by a spectrum of other profane mediums) ended up doing in the streets, not to mention put the whole (or even a part of the) moral disintegration of us as a country on their shoulders, they have no business.

—

You have the liberty (that they lack sometimes) to speak to people through your literature and teach them things, great things. You open up their minds to new horizons. The way I see it, you complete the efforts of every other preacher (or they complete you), to solve. Because at the end of the day, when I read for you both, I learn. I learn that adultery is ‘Haram’, but that ‘Hypocrisy’ is as well! They tell me that I must pray everyday, and you bring to my attention that along with that I should never embezzle public money! They tell me to obey the regime because if they said otherwise they will be vanquished (heck, the slightest cue about general things in the country sends the preacher to where the sun rises usually).

They give me individual religious awareness (and spiritual boosts I crave sometimes), and you give me communal (and other) insights. And both are necessary for me. And you both are doing it brilliantly, and you both may find obstacles, but at the end of the day neither of you wishes for the community to flounder. It just doesn’t make sense. And if either of you stops, this will make things absolutely worse. You’re the elite of this society, you talk to people – the very fact makes you one team for me. And whoever tends to choose sides is really narrow minded. (how could they find the time to choose sides?! I mean they really could grasp the whole situation for instance? God I must be a dunce then!)

So, again Dr. Alaa. I find your accusations quite frustrating. If you ever read this message from me, I would appreciate elaboration. [Not to mention I would be excessively honored]

Thank you,

Ibraheem Hamdi

7-10-2009

P.S. I do not stereotype – my ‘Wahabi’ refers to your description.

P.S. I was equally frustrated at people I encountered who criticize you, it works both ways. There is no right and wrong here. I think.

Same old same old som man brukar säga.

What ?!?!?!

ME LIKE !!!!

Måndag. Inget jobb idag.

Lite senare kommer ett inlägg med en massa bilder från helgen, nu är jag sjukt hungrig och jag ska passa på att ge ett litet musiktips;

Pryda – Lift .
