[Somehow this film, too, slipped through the cracks in my trying to get this blog up to speed. I saw it in July, I think.]

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the 6th movie in the Harry Potter series based on J.K. Rowling’s book of the same name. It was directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, David Thewlis and Jim Broadbent.

[SPOILERS for the WHOLE SERIES after this point.]

Plot:
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is in his sixth year at Hogwarts (school for wizadry). He finds a mysterious book that belonged to the half-blood prince and the notes in it help him star in Prof. Slughorn’s (Jim Broadbent) potion class. At the same time he works together with Prof. Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) to find out more about Lord Voldemort and his weaknesses.

The Half-Blood Prince is definitely the weakest of all the Potter movies so far. The plot’s all over the place, things happen you can only understand if you’ve read the books and HOLY SHIT! they spoil the seventh book/movie. What the hell?

I don’t think I’ve said it here, but if I did, I’ll gladly say it again: David Yates is the worst thing that could have happened to this series and that he gets to do the last four films is even more of a catastrophe. He can’t pace his stories, he can’t even manage to have one constant plot. Instead, his plot is all over the place. Watching the Half-Blood Prince is like watching an ADD bunny: “Oh, I gotta tell you about this it’s so interesting and then oh shit I need to tell you this first and have you seen this and what was I talking about? yeah right there’s this thing I gotta tell you but first have a piece of cake and by the way the whole point of the thing is and yeah so the story…”

It’s unbelievably annoying. And it leads to massive spoilers.

I can live with the fact that they completely butchered the whole Tonks-Lupine thing (no courtship, no nothing, just a “honey” all of a sudden?) because, okay, while I love their story, it’s not really a central one.

But why, why would you go ahead and completely spoil the seventh book/movie and the whole Snape thing? What purpose could that serve?

And all the relationship stuff was so badly done, I really wished Mike Newell would come back. Because he knows how to handle that.

Well. Apart from that, it was fine. The acting’s good, the supporting cast is great and the special effects were well done.

So, summarising: it definitely is the weakest movie so far and it makes me afraid of what the last two will be like but it didn’t put me off watching the rest (I don’t think that anything could).

CLICK FOR TRAILER What? For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector – “Com

CLICK FOR TRAILER

What?

For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector – “Commander Peter Quincy Taggart” (Tim Allen), “Lt. Tawny Madison” (Sigourney Weaver) and “Dr. Lazarus” (Alan Rickman) – set off on thrilling and often dangerous missions in space… and then their series was cancelled!

Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for “historical documents” and beamed up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performance of their lives in this hilarious adventure.

Where?

At home.

With?

The best dog in the world.

Why?

This last week there has been a lot of hype around this movie, the majority of it because of the DVD release of JJ Abrams awesome Star Trek reboot.

The naysayers of Abrams movie claim that the movie should have been more like Galaxy Quest, so I figure I should check it out, I remember not doing so on original release due to hating Star Trek but Abrams has possibly converted me, maybe GQ can further me along.

Worth It?

I didn’t think it was amazing, but it was entertaining and had some very funny moments, but due to my lack of Trek knowledge, I can’t help but feel I missed out on a lot of gags. It was infinitely better than the similar premised Tropic Thunder, but I wouldn’t put it on par with the awesome Three Amigo’s either.

Tim Allen is bearable but the film belongs to Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell, two actors who really blow everyone off-screen on such a regular basis, and in GQ they chew the scenery brilliantly and provide a lot of the laughs.

Overall, it’s a very funny film but unless you’re a Star Trek fan, you may also feel like you’re missing out.

7/10

Le Film: Un excellent “Feel Good Movie”.

Synopsis:

68/100

Genre: Comédie/Comédie romantique.

Durée: 2h15

The Movie Overdose attempts to contain the apocalypse with a review of Roland Emmerich’s 2012. We chat about how we would change Eddie Murphy for the better, what kind of sequel we want for Star Trek and whether we are glad to see Sean Connery coming back, if only in voice form. Tom slightly dampens the praise given to An Education and Sam revels in the madness of Running Scared and the flawed ambition of Dogma. The conclusion involves a discussion of actors that, no matter what, we always look forward to seeing on screen.

Another poster! You know, sometimes it feels like Burton’s afraid we’ll forget he has a movie coming out. This one features the caterpillar, who will be voiced by none other than Alan Rickman. Cool! Burton always hires the best of the best for his films. I do think it’s a little bit odd most of the posters center on Johnny, not complaining or anything, just wondering I mean it’s “Alice in Wonderland” not Johnny….Disney probably finds him a more bankable actor than the relative unknown Mia Wasikowska.

Darsteller: Michael Gambon, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, David Thewlis, Warwick Davis, Richard Griffiths, Timothy Spall, Fiona Shaw, David Bradley, Julie Walters, Gemma Jones, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Williams, Helen McCrory, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, Rupert Grint, Devon Murray, James Phelps, Alfie Enoch, Jamie Waylett, Oliver Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Josh Herdman, Bonnie Wright, Dave Legeno, William Melling, Ralph Ineson, Natalia Tena, Katie Leung, Shefali Chowdhury, Afshan Azad, Jessie Cave, Evanna Lynch, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, Tony Coburn, Suzanne Toase, Amelda Brown, Nina Voelker, Robert Knox, Georgina Leonidas, Anna Shaffer, Tom Moorcroft, Johnpaul Castrianni, Rod Hunt, Freddie Stroma, Scarlett Byrne, Louis Cordice, Isabella Laughland, Teresa Mahoney, Frank Dillane, River George, Charlie Bennison, Dean Garnham.

Serien-Special
Sein Name ist Bauer, Jack Bauer. Die Zeit, die ihm bleibt:
Vierundzwanzig Stunden.

I’ve been away for a little bit and came home to find some HBP news on the net – an eery scene that never made it into the Half Blood Prince. Its rather good in my opinion but I can see why it was kept out of the film ending as it was edited (I didn’t like the film end as it was edited). This scene gives us an idea of what the film could have looked like if they had rushed less and had taken the time to tell the story properly. It is also available here at the Leaky Video Galleries) but here it is on YouTube….

I’ll refrain from heaping praise on Rickman – the few seconds of his performance speak for themselves. I love the choral reference and the dark yellow green look of the cinematography reminiscent of Prisoner of Azkaban. Hopefully, there will be more like this (including the It’s over line) on the dvd.

It’s easy to mock celebrities, actors in particular, who stress to the public how difficult and important their lives are and how much fame belabors those facts. Especially when we see them living such pampered and extravagant lives. I’m here to discuss five men in Hollywood who actually DO live rather industrious existanses and yet fail to ever complain about them. In fact, most are as hard-working as they are do to their love for what they do, and wouldn’t have it any other way. Now, check all your false pretenses at the door, this list takes NO monetary statistics into account to tabulate this list. I’m simply conducting an opinionated grouping of five actors who I feel have taken on more than most men can handle in the show biz…biz, and I’m compiling this list in relation to this point in time, Autumn of 2009. Yes, Seth Rogen has appeared in MULTITUDES of films over the last five years, but after Funny People and Observe and Report of this year, the guy has been laying pretty low. This list tabulates the mainstreamers who have been racking up leading role credits in muliple expansive flicks. So, without further ado…

5. Johnny Depp

To say that I respect this man would be an intense understatement. His acting prowess is some of the best of our time, so it makes me EXTREMELY happy to see him inundated with work. If you’ve been living under the sea (visions of The Little Mermaid just popped into my head. Walt Disney prevails) for the past year then you probably haven’t heard of Depp’s numerous forays into film he has recently undertaken. Public Enemies was the only work he appeared in that was released in ‘09, however, he has been fast at work on massive cinematic staples of the 2010 movie-going season that will almost-assuredly dominate the market. The first being Tim Burton’s reiteration of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Depp plays The Mad Hatter in Burton’s CGI-laden could-be-wonderful-could-be-terrible still up-in-the-air retelling of the classic story. Headlining next to Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Lucas, and Alan Rickman, the film has all the makings of a complete cinematic win, the screenshots and trailers, however, leave doubt in my mind, as CGI-laden, as I said before, is putting it nicely. Time will tell. Depp also was involved in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, filling one of the three roles created after lead actor Heath Ledger’s passing. Depp, along with Colin Farrell and Jude Law, will stand in for Ledger as alternate versions of Ledger’s character, to help the stroy along despite the events that took place prior to the film’s completion. The next chapter in the Hunter S. Thompson chronicles, The Rum Diary, is also in post, in which Depp will reprise his role as the gonzo-journalist.
In addition to these films that Depp has finished, the newest film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is slated for a 2011 release date and is currently in the earliest stages of pre-production. Sin City 3, which Depp has been rumored to be involved with basically from its inception, is also geared up for a 2012 release (funny considering Sin City 2 is still stuck in developmental hell).
And here’s the kicker. IMDB lists Depp as in development with FOURTEEN new titles, as well. Among them, a Dali biopic and The Lone Ranger. Wow, simply wow. While these developmental deals can fall through at any time, they can also usually indicate desire and co-involvement between the parties of the actors and the producers. It will be interesting to see where Depp’s career goes looking towards these titles.

4. Brad Pitt

Here’s another guy with developmental deals in spades. The ‘ole rusty, trusty IMDB has Pitt pegged with sixteen deals, the most I could find. In addition to being attached to The sequel to Downey Jrs Sherlock Holmes vehicle, Pitt is also listed with World War Z and a Steve McQueen biopic. Goo.
Pitt tore up the screen in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds this summer, and has currently been attached to the fledgling project Moneyball, which is listed as being in the earliest stages of production, despite the fact that it has no director. Pitt is further attached to The Tree of Life and The Lost City of Z, as well as providing a voice to the upcoming animated flick Oobermind. He’s also rumored to be apart of 2012’s upcoming The Odyssey and The Sparrow.

3. George Clooney

The former Sexiest Man in America has never slowed down since his rocket-propelled rise to fame in the mid-to-late 90’s as well. Clooney most recently has released The Men Who Stare at Ghosts, a loosely based adaptation of the book of the same name which regards a 1970’s to 1980’s military experiment that documented telepathic phenomena. In addition to this recent film, though, Clooney finished up providing voice work for the titular role in Wes Anderson’s upcoming The Fantastic Mr. Fox, alongside Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, and Jason Schwartzman, as well as polishing off his role in the Jason Reitman-helmed Up in the Air, which is also currently in post. These are merely his acting credits for 2009, though, the man also executive produced the Matt Damon vehicle The Informant! and Playground, a movie I honestly couldn’t find too much on. As far as his queue list goes, IMDB has him cited with ten in-development deals.

2. Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is a man of many faces. The actor became famous for his rubber-faced persona that landed him a slew of comedic work in the mid-to-late 90’s and a career launching pad that ANY actor would be proud of. By the turn of the century, however, Carrey was becoming far more versatile as an actor. Already dabbling in the dramatic with The Truman Show, Liar Liar,, and the INCREDAMAZING Andy Kaufman biopic, Man on the Moon. Carrey then went on to tackle the serious side of life full-tilt in Charlie Kaufman’s magnificent Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, opposite Kate Winslet, The Majestic, and the box office blunder The Number 23. He has returned to comedy in recent years, however, and, as always, has fully immersed himself in his roles. Recently released is the Zemeckis-penned adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in which Carrey provided the movements and voices to Scrooge at all ages of life AND the three spirits that visit him! Encompassing multiple accents, multiple ages of life, and multiple SPIRITUAL BEINGS, Carrey tackled the project head-on while keeping busy with multiple other projects, such as I Love You, Philip Morris, the tale of an escaped homosexual convict who goes on a quest to find his lover that was released from prison before he was. The film has been receiving stellar reviews and co-stars Ewan McGregor opposite Carrey in this bold and self-titled dark comedy. All the while that these two flicks have been in post, Carrey has both been bulking up and studying up to play Curly Howard in the upcoming Three Stooges revamp with Paul Giamatti and possibly Benecio Del Toro. This was all considered fact for the longest time and was referenced multiple times by Carrey’s apparent weight gain in the tabloids and public citings, but, as of late, Carrey has been described as withdrawing from the project. It doesn’t negate the fact that the man was taking on multiple roles immediately after finishing his previously mentioned two. Further, IMBD.com has Carrey listed in FOUR different upcoming development deals. Which may seem normal for a star of his status, but when you consider the work load he will indefinitely take on with these upcoming roles, it makes a profound statement on his desire to never be bored.
In addition to his films and the launch of a fully-functioning personal website that has actually made the rounds and received a warm/geeky reception from the film/internet blogosphere, Carrey and his wife Jenny McCarthy have consistantly maintained their involvement in the charity Generation Rescue, which strives to find alternative ways to treat autism in children. Not bad for a man who was talking with his butt a little over 10 years ago.

1. Nicolas Cage

Go ahead and laugh (you’ve earned it) but the man has yet to produce a dull movie (I said ‘dull’ not ‘bad’) and his work output is something for ANY actor to admire, regardless of how badly he phones roles in. Before I continue, most of you know, but for those who don’t, everything I joke about Nicolas Cage comes from a place of sincere reverance. Yes, the man takes part in AWFUL movies (which, given his current economic situation could just be to keep the lights on) but in each film he’s in he is always FULLY committed to the story being told. And I’m sorry, but I’d rather watch Cage run around in a Bear suit any day FULLY EMBRACING THE ROLE than see Tom Hanks win ANOTHER Oscar for appearing in some adaptation of a story set in the 1940’s. ALL TANGENTS ASIDE, Cage has kept himself QUITE stacked as of late. In early 2009 the CGI-Fest known as G-Force dropped with Cage providing a voice as well as Cage’s vehicle Knowing, in which he played the lead. Throughout the remainder of the year he has worked on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, Season of the Witch, and Werner FOOKING Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Did I mention the voice that he provided for Astro Boy? No? Well, lump that in there as well.
IMDB has him attached to 4 deals in development, one of which being (GET READY!!!) Ghost Rider 2! Which creators have said will distance itself from the original as a revamp, not a sequel. Yet, it still stars Cage as the lead. Oh, how I LOVE this man! It simply amazes me what Hollywood will greenlight.

Alice (Mia Wasikowska) ในวัยสิบเก้าปีตัดสินใจหนีการแต่งงานที่เธอไม่ยินยอม มายังอีกโลกนึงที่สุดแสนจะวิเศษที่เชื่อมต่อกันด้วยโพรงกระต่าย และแน่นอนว่าเธอเคยเยี่ยมเยือนมาแล้วในตอนเด็กๆ และที่แห่งนั้นเธอได้เจอเพื่อนที่ห่างหายไปนานอย่าง the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas), the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor), the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), และคนสำคัญ…

Tim Burton

Now, this weekend was a nice and relaxed one. Friday was another theatre directing session that gives me faith in knowing i made the right choice coming to the institution that currently houses myself and the other vagrant artists… a hot pot of wannabe’s of a variant of niches.

Working with Kane’s 4:48 psychosis and Zarrilli and LeCompt assortment of techniques, I was restored to a few years ago when working with a theatre company from back home, a nostalgic feeling of ‘I-know-what-I’m-doingness’. Even if i dont like the text, I fulfilled my duty to do it all to the best of my ability reminded me of a greek tragedy that i forget the name of which was performed in my first year of college over at Barnsley, after the first show two girls in a year above told me how much presence I had when I entered the space, I was reminded of that again as i stepped to the microphone to deliver a speech of this open text. I must still have presence, presence cannot be lost? Can presence be absence even if you once possessed it?

These questions were going through my head hours later as I met friends for drinks before a performance of Villa by Untill Thursdays: Oliver Bray which in my head was not only a satirical jab at Forced Entertainment and their (In my opinion) lack of change in form over the past years, and a nice new original piece about britishness, russia, loss and presence, for most of an hour the artist took control and with stability held everyone’s attention with a playful necessity. The message wasnt complete, or coherent but it was refreshing to see something unpretentious, yet clever, witty and sure of itself.

The confidence was one that reminded me of works long dead and buried, forgotten in a sea of the NEW – the search for a viable form where you cannot hide.

http://www.youtube.com/v/coxoEhQmjzY&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0×5d1719&color2=0xcd311b” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”480″ height=”385″>

Swimming to Cambodia by Spalding Gray.

Spalding Gray had a presence that was a nice refreshing change to the other work him and the Wooster group was performing at the time. It held a beat-generational story telling aesthetics – everything was simple, everything had a function and wasnt the big-collage of entertainment that you are being taught in the post-modern-theatrical event.

–

On another note, I have been composing work up for my own event I’m hoping to showcase at the taster event EMBRYO at Studio Salford.

We performed there two years ago doing my short sketches Morning Smell & Nothingtolose featuring myself, Darren White and Gemma Salsubury and I cannot wait to get back in there.

Lately since the hiatus of performing (given a small one at that (2-3 months)) I feel should try and inform anyone whose been feeling down, uninspired and generally fatigued about making work as artists or just getting off your bottoms as actors – I know it’s hard to find inspiration during the poverty-stricken times, but wasnt the poverty and depression that created most of the art you hold special at the moment?

Also if you want to make work – make it. Its one area where running before you can crawl usually helps – fuck the baby steps – its head first territory!

SO here are a few more videos that have inspired me today, yesterday and tomorrow.

Franko B – I miss you

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass

Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson- On Beckett

David Amram – On Kerouac’s Pull My Daisy with an excerpt of the original movie.

and finally

Buddy Wakefield with his poem Convenience Stores

Now maybe I’m just being self-indulgent and lazy there, showing everyone what i want to see…

but isnt that a point of most art?

I have my drive back, now I need my audience.

(a previous post from the former NuPoppa blog)

Our DVR is peppered with the funny (Graham Norton Show, The Daily Show, 30 Rock, SNL, Flight of the Conchords), what I’ll call WTF (Oliver Twist, Barry Manilow concert — clearly my wife’s) and the simply awesome. The “simply awesome” consists of: Fletch, Animal House, Fletch Lives, Vacation, Caddyshack, Gung Ho! and a Barry Manilow concert (kidding).

I don’t drink (anymore), but the “simply awesome” USED to be called “hangover movies.” These are the movies that, on a lazy Saturday or Sunday (or Wednesday for some of you) you can rely on. You can watch the first 20 minutes with one eye open, then fall asleep for 30 minutes, wake up, finish it to the end and still feel satisfied. Back in the day, that would have included about 5 Advil and 2.6 gallons of water to hydrate. Drooling on pillows and couches was also usually de rigeur.

These are also movies that, sadly or simply awesome-ly, most men can quote with relative proficiency. So, it begs the question: what should be the first movie that my son and I share together when he gets older? Should it be highly quotable? Should it be educational?

Some in the running:

Fletch
Pluses: It is only one of the greatest movies written and made for the male 38-42 set. Period. This tightly-wound romp is highly-quotable. I can already imagine my boy at a party of my peers saying, “John Cock..toas…ton.” Throw a lampshade on his head and he’ll be life of the party.

Minuses: I see none.

Lessons Learned in film: Never trust Joe Don Baker. I think this is a lesson we all should learn. Kidding. He would kick my ass if he read this.

Animal House
Pluses: Filmed in Oregon. Classic dialogue. A heartwarming story about college life. Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong.

Minuses: Otis Day and the Knights have never been the same since.

Lessons learned in film: Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.

Vacation
Pluses: The late, great John Hughes. Beverly DeAngelo buffin’ it up a bit. Chevy Chase at his finest. The Wagon Queen Family Truckster with the optional Rally Fun Pack. Eugene Levy calling Rusty “Rueben.”

Minuses: Not 100% realistic about what a family vacation is about. It’s more like 96% real.

Lessons learned in film: There is no way in hell we are driving a long distance anywhere. I refuse to put my boy through that.

Out of Africa
Pluses: For our purposes here, very few, though it is a fine film. The late Sydney Pollack was a genius.

Minuses: It’s “Meet Joe Black”-long. I mean, REALLY fu**ing long.

Lessons learned in film: Those rich, white bastards screwed it all up. Africa is best experienced doing humanitarian work. If the boy wants to be in the Peace Corps someday, I’m all for it.

Everyone Says I Love You
Pluses: Great cast. Alan Alda. Natalie Portman. Drew Barrymore. Julia Roberts. Woody Allen. Goldie Hawn. The list goes on.

Minuses: Edward Norton, though a FINE actor, isn’t a very good singer. And he’ll probably kick my ass if he reads this.

Lessons learned in film: If s**t goes sideways, it’s OK to sing a little. Just don’t do it in public, people might think you’re a freak or something.

Die Hard
Pluses: Bruce Willis is from South Jersey, where my family lives. And, of course, Alan Rickman. He’s SO money.

Minuses: The dude with the long blonde hair. He’s creepy.

Lessons learned in film: Kick ass first. Take names later.

Say Anything
Pluses: John and Joan Cusack. Cameron Crowe (who could write something on a cocktail napkin and I’d probably read it). Ione Skye. Piven as a younger man. Seattle. It captured the angst that we all felt when we were in college.

Minuses: “In Your Eyes.” Great song, but I have this uncontrollable urge to buy a boombox and hold it over my head. It captured the angst we all felt when we were in college.

Lessons learned in film: Don’t live in Seattle. You’ll just end up going to London on a study abroad program anyway.

Believe me, we have plenty of time to go over this, but one can never be too prepared. I’d love your thoughts on the first movie I should share with the boy. It can be on the list or one not on the list that you think is a winner.
