Whenever I see something that someone has created or thought of that is so cleaver or original I  can’t help but smile. Here are a few examples I’ve found lately; I hope they make you smile too.

Laura Beatrice Marling, nascida em 1º de fevereiro de 1990 – sim, ela só tem 19 anos – é a mais jovem e promissora cantora folk dessa new wave country folk britânica que está em cena, ao lado de Johnny Flynn e companhia. Nasceu em Reading, Berkshire, Inglaterra e sua participação na música veio supostamente com suas participações na banda Noah and the Whale, a qual Charlie Fink, vocalista e front man do grupo produziu o primeiro álbum de Laura, o debut Alas I Cannot Swim. Além de Noé e a Baleia, Laura Marling faz incontáveis duetos e participações com cantores de todo tipo e lado e suas canções próprias tem muito ritmo e musicalidade.

I really like this video. It’s one of the two Laura Marling songs I like, Alas, I Cannot Swim. She’s playing with a full band in a church and, even from the video, the acoustics are great. Why didn’t she take advantage of this at Union Chapel!? This performance is definately ‘wow’ worthy. Especially because there’s a good ol’ hoedown at the end.

And she’s only 18! Still! I’m not sure anyone’s ever been 18 for this long, but research (yeah, Wikipedia) suggests Laura Marling has a couple of months to go yet. As ever, it’s hard to believe when you listen to her worldly debut Alas I Cannot Swim with its seen-it-all songs and careworn empathy, but really – 18!

For just a second, you think ‘Ghosts’ is going to be twee-folk-lite, then suddenly it turns out perfect. The parts are delicately layered, tempos are swapped around, shy strings sidle in, Laura breaks our little hearts, drums perk up, a congregation of voices rears – they’re stalking each other – it’s a hymn now, the drums roll, end. Perfect.

With nothing driving her to cut a rug, Junior plays quietly with her sister. I tell her who’s singing and she replies, “Laura Marling. Oh.” It’s tricky to tell whether that’s quiet acceptance or utter apathy, but she’s listened through to the end as everyone should – its magic is in its full form.

Den folgenden Text habe ich nun ein bisschen zurückgehalten, weil ich ihn mit einem kleinen Relaunch verbinden wollte, aber mir fehlt dazu noch die Inspiration. Trotzdem möchte in den Text von Lena nicht weiter hinauszögern, weil sie über ein wunderbares Album schreibt, einer tollen Künstlerin.

Laura Marling – Alas I Cannot Swim

Wenn ich Laura Marling in drei Worten beschreiben müsste, würde ich sagen: Süß, verträumt und unermesslich kreativ. In diesem Fall ist es sogar so, dass Platte und Künstler dieselben Eigenschaften haben. Alas I Cannot Swim ist eine Autobiographie, könnte man meinen, denn Laura erzählt realistisch und ganz nah, wie ein Flüstern der besten Freundin klingen ihre Texte, es bleiben aber viele Fragen offen: Klopfen nachts wirklich junge Männer an ihr Fenster, läuft sie vor denen anderer Männer hin und her und kann sie etwa wirklich nicht schwimmen?

Fräulein Marling (dieser Ausdruck dient lediglich der Variation) ist ein ganz normales junges Mädchen von nur siebzehn Jahren, hellblond (mit ganz frischen kurzen Haaren) und immer mit ihrer Gitarre unter dem Arm, schüchtern wirkt sie, beinahe in sich gekehrt, wie eine Tagträumerin, die der Realität noch nicht recht ins Auge blicken möchte. Ihre Songs klingen genauso: Sie sehnt sich nach dem Prinz auf dem weißen Ross, nach einem Ritter, der sie vor dem Drachen rettet, sie ist zerbrechlich und erwartet vielleicht zuviel vom Leben. Der Hörer merkt sofort, dass Alas I Cannot Swim ihr Debüt ist, denn so unschuldig kann kein zweites Album sein. Er möchte jedes Zitat sofort an seine Zimmerwand und an jede andere schreiben, ein Liedtext durch die ganze Stadt, so groß, dass es jeder sieht und denkt: Das, ja, das ist ein Gedicht.

Doch nicht nur inhaltlich hat Alas I Cannot Swim seine deutlichen Höhepunkte. Laura Marling setzt Trommeln und Klaviere ein, Gitarren, Flöten und Geigen, und wenn nach dieser Folklore-Explosion einmal kurz Stille herrscht, zwitschern Singvögel oder der Regen prasselt. Neben My Manic And I, das übrigens in einem wundervollen Musikvideo beheimatet ist, New Romantic, Ghosts und Night Terror, den vier ausgekuppelten Singles, findet sich ein Wunderwerk wie Shine irgendwo mitten dazwischen, das sich mit Verzweiflung durch Stimme und Gitarre zieht, vollkommen ruhig, beinahe ohnmächtig. Ein weiterer Leckerbissen ist das Lied The Captain And The Hourglass, das aus der Reihe fällt; nicht nur, weil es inhaltlich so vielfältig ist, sondern auch, weil man die Gegenwart der See wahrlich spüren kann, dort sind irgendwelche Instrumente, die sich wie Delfine anhören. You Crawled Out Of The Sea ist das eindeutige Sahnehäubchen der Platte: Mit einer Länge von nur 1:16 Minuten, einer einzigen Textzeile, aber einer vollkommen uneinheitlichen Melodie, fällt es dem aufmerksamen Hörer schnell auf.
So nackt und ehrlich zu sein ist schwer und gelingt nur wenigen Künstlern. Viele verstecken sich hinter Masken und experimentellem Gedudel, doch Laura Marling offenbart ihre Träume ganz und gar, ohne dafür etwas zu nehmen: Sie steht aufrecht auf dem Highway, unbekleidet vor der Menge und mit ausgebreiteten Armen vor der Pistole.

Und wenn der glückliche Hörer (und auch Käufer, darf ich doch hoffen) das kleine Werk bis ganz zum Ende anhört, wird er auch erfahren, warum es eigentlich so heißt, auch wenn er vielleicht niemals wissen wird, ob es die Wahrheit ist.

Jetzt unterstützt sie Adam Green nicht nur auf seinen Konzerten in Deutschland, sie tritt bei MTV auf, macht Schlagzeilen in der Sunday Times, und trotzdem gibt es bei Youtube Videos zu finden, in denen sie noch in der Fußgängerzone singt. Sie ist gerade dabei, sehr berühmt zu werden, und sie hat es definitiv verdient.

To say Laura Marling’s solo debut, Alas I Cannot Swim, is an outstanding first effort by a teenage singer/songwriter, would be right; but it would also be a major understatement. Simply to write and record an album that is solely your own at the ripe old age of eighteen is not automatically a phenomenal achievement, because artists like Aly & AJ have done so themselves at an early age, too. What makes you a teenage songstress phenom is when you can write and record an album that is full of legitimately catchy songs that just happen to be full of genuine feeling as well, and Marling does that in spades with Alas. Making her start in music with the band Noah and the Whale when she was just sixteen, she released this breakthrough just three days before her eighteenth birthday earlier this year, bursting onto the scene with the incredibly infectious opening tune, “Ghosts”. There is no looking back for Ms. Marling from this point on. The sky’s not even your limit, gal. On her third single release in the months since, most recently “Night Terror”, and in September nominated for a Mercury Prize for Best Album, 2008 marks a significant year for this endlessly talented, blossoming artist.

olha que beleza a laura marling, musa deste blog, tocando “night terror” na festa do mercury prize na semana passada. o prêmio, que é o mais pretigioso do reino unido, ficou com o elbow que, além do “alas i cannot swim“, bateu o “in rainbows”, o disco da estelle e o disco do last shadow puppets para se ter noção. com isso, o thom yorke passa a ser o artista com mais indicações e o maior perdedor também. ele já foi indicado três vezes com o radiohead e uma pelo seu disco solo. e perdeu todas. se bem que ele participa de uma música no “stories from the city, stories from the sea” da pj harvey que ganhou em 2000. a diferença deste prêmio para outros como o grammy, por exemplo, é que o vencedor ganha uma bolada (cerca de 10 mil libras). o vocalista do elbow até chorou dizendo que este foi o primeiro  prêmio de peso que a banda ganhou em mais de dez anos de carreira. no site da bbc dá ver os vídeos de todos os indicados que se apresentaram na festa.

The delectable Miss. Marling

I caught a bit of the Mercury Prize ceremony last night and whitnessed the gorgeous Laura Marling for the first time. Her voice is rather sumptuous to say the least! I love the folky vocals and fiddles, I guess her sound has an almost Irish lilt. Some of the songs i’ve listened to this morning feel really haunting. ‘Night Terror’ feels particularly coarse. Anyway, I just bought her debut album ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ on my lunch ( I never bother to buy CD’s as a rule), so i’m hoping it’s all as lovely. Time for work and tunes….

UPDATE: 18 September 08 /// I’ve been listening to the album for just over a week now. I bloody love the tracks ‘Night Terror’ and ‘The Captain and the Hourglass’, the later being my favourite by a long shot. My opinion of the rest of the album has mellowed a little, but it’s still awight like.

A 17a edição do Mercury Prize acontece na terça-feira, com transmissão ao vivo da BBC (eu bem que tentei ganhar um ingresso para ir à cerimônia, mas não rolou). Por aqui, o clima de já ganhou é para o produtor de dubstep (um estilo de música eletrônica criado em Londres) Burial, aka William Bevan. Ele era uma espécie de Banksy da cena musical por aqui e só revelou a verdadeira identidade depois que o seu álbum “Untrue” foi um dos 12 nomeados ao prêmio. Andam dizendo  por aí  que a revelação foi uma exigência dos organizadores do Mercury Prize, que não aceitaram que ele se apresentasse, e possivelmente recebesse o prêmio, sem revelar primeiro o nome verdadeiro.

Se ele vai ganhar mesmo é outra história. Ano passado, todos diziam que Amy Winehouse seria a vencedora e deu Klaxons. Mas, independente do resultado na terça, Burial com certeza já saiu ganhando com a nomeação e publicidade. De acordo com uma matéria do Guardian, as vendas de “Untrue” cresceram 361% desde a nomeação e consequente revelação de identidade do Burial.

A minha torcida vai, claro, para Neon Neon, de quem já falei algumas vezes aqui, mas meu palpite é que se não der mesmo Burial, vai dar Radiohead ou Elbow este ano. Radiohead porque a banda foi nomeada três vez ao Mercury (1997, 2001, 2003) e nunca ganhou. Outra razão é que o júri é composto por 12 jornalistas e críticos de música e, em tempos de discussão sobre downloads legais e ilegais, acho que o Radiohead vai ter a seu favor o fato de ter lançado o “In Rainbows” online para fãs decidirem quanto pagariam – até mesmo nada – pelo álbum antes de colocar o álbum nas lojas. Mas também vale lembrar que o Mercury, apesar da fama de ser uma alternativa independente ao Brit Awards, ainda é um prêmio organizado por uma associação que representa os interesses da indústria, a British Association of Record Dealers. Hum, pensando bem…

Já a banda Elbow está concorrendo ao prêmio com um álbum que representa a volta por cima do grupo depois de dois anos sem gravadora, quando no mesmo período os rapazes de Manchester tiveram que lidar com a morte de um amigo e colaborador da banda, o compositor Bryan Glancy (o nome do álbum é uma homenagem a ele). Tipo de história que ajuda a ganhar prêmio. “The Seldom Seen Kid” foi bastante elogiado, com alguns críticos dizendo inclusive que esse é o melhor álbum do Elbow. 

Vamos ver o que acontece na terça-feira. (Que o Neon Neon merece ganhar, merece )

i go through weird music phases. i’ll get into a genre for a couple days and try to get as many albums as i can. if you look at my ever growing and obese itunes library, arranged auto-biographically a-la high fidelity, you’ll see blocks of 70s r&b, trip-hop, euro-death metal, ambient post-rock, 90s hip hop, free jazz, and just about everything in between. 

a few days ago, i was wandering about my collection and ran across a chunk of female singer/songwriters. stuff like st. vincent, a fine frenzy, regina spektor, fiona apple and patti smith’s pissing in a river (amazing song, if you haven’t heard it, discover it).

anyways, i set off to find a new artist to add to the collection. scouring random blogs, youtube and pandora, i heard about laura marling.

18 years old, from england and known for her lyrics, the only band she’d been in was noah and the whale, a boring, carbon-copy indie band, who’s mediocre at best. i wasn’t expecting much.

but, somehow alas, i cannot swim manages to be an impressive debut. incorporating soft, acoustic instrumentation and quality production (from noah and the whale’s lead singer, charlie fink) that showcases her vocals, marling sets herself apart in a familiar setting. 

musically, she generally limits herself to piano, guitar and the occasional string arrangement. each track is distinct in style, if not overly developed. you’re no god hints toward a slight country influence. while night terror start with a standard three chord progression, then grows with a hypnotic guitar riff, thats almost drone rock in styte. though simplistic, it’s this minimalist approach that allows her to shine lyrically. 

and it is with her lyrics that marling really makes her mark. she speaks of loss and love, of death and of god. and she does so without any trace of 

the sophomoric poetry that discredits the entire emo genre. and she accomplishes this at only 18. 

that isn’t to say alas, i cannot swim is without flaws. there are some filler tracks, that just seem to fade into the background. the country-esque, you’re no god is dwarfed by the anthemic night terror and thoughtful my manic and i. musically, there is a fine line between minimalist and overly simple. throughout the album, marling toes that line. i also feel like some of her best work was left off the album. her ep, my manic and i, includes two songs, new romantic and typical, that are far better than most of what made the cut for alas, i cannot swim.

all things considered, alas, i cannot swim is a solid debut record. i highly recommend checking the my manic and i ep, as that is a condensed sample of her best work, without the filler. i cannot wait to see what comes of laura marling’s career. at only 18, she has the potential to be great, once her musicianship catches up with her already mature songwriting.

Entertaining, lovely debut for UK based singer/songwriter Laura Marling, who meshes British folk by way of Richard and Linda Thompson and American folk reminiscent of early Suzanne Vega with rock and pop elements. Alas I Cannot Swim also benefits from some savvy production by Charlie Fink, spare when it needs to be, as well as from eclectic arrangements done by the band Noah and the Whale. Marling is also a charming, intelligent and often witty lyricist, her gifts all the more impressive for her being just 18 years old, recalling another musical prodigy, Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera, who was 16 when he began releasing singles. Alas I Cannot Swim is hopefully the beginning of a long and fruitful career for Marling. Standout cuts: “Ghosts,” “Cross Your Fingers,” “My Manic And I” and “The Captain And The Hourglass.”

a lot of the reviews of this record seem to be hung up on the fact that laura marling is only 18 (!). it’s almost as though critics are in disbelief that an 18 year old is capable of writing such beautiful music or singing with such eloquence. keep in mind that at marling’s age, franz schubert had already written nearly 200 songs and keith moon had established himself as one of the best drummers in rock n roll. so to say that it’s surprising that an 18 year old came up with such a record is a compliment, yes, but it also undermines the fact that this record stands up on its own and is not simply “good for her age.”

the songs on alas are delicate but not “twee” by any means. marling’s voice sounds confident and determined while being supported throughout the record by the gentle strumming of her acoustic guitar. there are other instruments employed, but they serve primarily as a backdrop to flesh out what’s already there. the only song where the extra instrumentation comes to the forefront is “cross your fingers,” which stands out among the sparse folk arrangements as it tends to stray into “adult contemporary” territory, with clean electric guitar, glockenspiel, strings and back-up “oooohs” accompanying marling. although this full sound makes for a nice change, it’s rather unnecessary as it muddles the real strengths of her songwriting: her excellent attention to rhythm and melody. aside from that one misstep, the melodies on alas constantly connect, particularly on “my manic and i.” this debut LP is a stunning album that succeeds because of marling’s ability to craft intelligent and honest songs, not because of her age.

No mundo da música pop é de praxe que a maioria dos artistas comecem a despontar com sua arte enquanto estão na casa dos vinte e poucos anos. no rock’n'roll isto fica mais evidente já que, em sua gênese, é um ritmo feito de jovens para jovens. junventude, neste caso, nada tem a ver com idade, pois sabe-se que existem muitos jovens de quinze, desesseis anos que parecem ter setenta anos de idade tamanha é a rabugice. ao mesmo tempo existe muito vovô de oitenta anos que deixa muito rapazinho no chinelo seja em disposição física, seja no quesito psicológico. dito isto, ficam as perguntas: qual é a idade mínima necessária para que uma pessoa se mostre um artista consistente? até que idade um artista ainda é relevante? existem, realmente, estes limites? este é um assunto que suscita vários argumentos conflitantes e, com certeza, gera uma discussão acalorada.

peguemos, então, o disco da laura marling. quem acompanha este blog sabe que a cantora é uma das queridinhas da casa já há algum tempo e presença constante por aqui. “alas i cannot swim”, o disco em questão, é uma pepita que põe em xeque todos os argumentos daqueles que dizem que idade é fundamental na música. vale até lembrar daquela famosa frase “não acredito em ninguém que cante blues e tenha menos de quarenta anos de idade. o blues requer uma alma calejada”. não me lembro quem disse esta frase (acho que foi o b.b king) mas não pude deixar de citá-la.

laura marling completou 18 anos em fevereiro último. ano passado chegou até a ser barrada do próprio show em um pub londrino por ser menor de idade e, por conta disso, resolveu se apresentar na frente do pub em questão. no meio da rua.

ao ouvir “alas…” têm-se a impressão de que a moça de voz aveludada já passou por muitos percalços na vida, já provou de muitos dissabores e sofreu por vários desamores. a maturidade das letras de laura realmente chamam a atenção se levarmos em conta que tratam de assuntos como depressão, morte, religião, infidelidade, egoísmo e solidão. não pelos temas em si, mas pela veracidade, coesão e coerência que saem por todos os poros de cada palavra dita pela cantora. esqueça os ataques de choro e falso sofrimento dos emos, aqui a coisa é mais complexa.

o disco é repleto de músicas que sugerem sempre algum conflito. seja entre um casal apaixonado que se vê separado por um rio (na faixa-título), seja num conflito de gerações com os pais (“tap at my window”); um casal com ciúme mútuo (“my manic and I”) ou então a batalha da própria laura consigo mesma para tentar acordar durante uma noite de pesadelos durante a infância.

o conflito de gerações existente nas letras de “tap at my window” e “new romantic” (música que até ganhou videoclipe mas acabou não entrando no álbum)  rendeu até certa indisposição com seus pais. laura teve que reunir os dois e dizer que se tratam de obras de ficção e que em nada têm a ver com a realidade. a primeira, segundo ela, é inspirado num romance de jane austen e tem os seguintes versos “mamãe eu te culpo/ por eu tentar ser o que você é/ papai eu te amo/ mas não te perdôo por me fazer do jeito que eu sou”.

tais temas são permeados pela música folk de arranjos simples e minimalistas e pela voz doce e pungente de laura que remetem a joan baez e, principalmente, a joni mitchell. assim como acontece com dylan e a folk music em si, o dedilhar suave do violão parece transparecer ainda mais a sensibilidade e veracidade das canções.

laura marling toca música folk “de raíz” mas também está ligada à música “moderna”. ano passado ela fez uma participação na faixa “suspicious eyes” presente no disco “ten new messages”, do the rakes e também emprestou vocais para “young love” single do novo álbum do mystery jets. ela também apareceu no programa do jools holland vestindo uma camiseta das spice girls.

este ano ela já se apresentou no south by southwest, este fim de semana tocou no the great scape e no meio do ano está escalada para o gigante glastonbury festival. apesar disso, ela parece querer evitar o hype e preferir ir ganhando notoriedade aos poucos. 

o termo “alas”, presente no título do álbum, segundo o que eu pesquisei, é uma interjeição muito utilizada por poetas de séculos passados para exprimir pesar, tristeza ou preocupação. algo como: “ó meu deus” ou ”ai de mim”. 

“alas i cannot swim” foi produzido por charlie fink, vocalista do grupo Noah and the Wale (ao qual laura marling fazia parte até pouco tempo atrás) e já desponta como um dos melhores de 2008. num ano em que novas cantoras tais como adele, duffy, amy mcdonald e emmy the great parecem surgir como as sucessoras de lily allen e amy winehouse é laura marling quem parece ter mais potencial para, inclusive, tomar o lugar destas duas. talento não falta.

Enough with the trivia and lets talk about her music.

Her songs are an amalgamation of folk and pop’s utter goodness which are incredibly charming , provocative, disarming and intimate.

Those are the perfect ingredients for a sunday sound.

So get used to her name.
