CONGRATULATIONS Miaa Rebane on winning the Title and Crown for Miss Virtual World 2010

A few month ago I met Miaa Rebane since she is one of Mimmi Boa`s students who models for  Evane Models Agency.

We came along together very good and we decided to work together, she as a model and I as her designer. And, as recent events show, our cooperation work out pretty successful. She won the Miss Virtual World contest where she worn the national outfit which I designed for her.

I am so happy for Miaa, because she is such a wonderful person. And I am a little bit proud of myself because it was the second time that one of my outfits participated in this contest successfully.

The co-operation between Miaa Rebane and me was a lucky coincidence. Fist I promised Lorella Piaggio, a great person as well to help her to participate in the Miss Virtual World contest. Some of you may remember my gowns for Miss Venezuela. By the way the formal gown you will find behind the 24th door of my advent calendar. But after a while Lorella didn`t want to compete anymore. And so Miaa and I decided to team up. Preparing for the contest we spent a lot of time together. And I can tell you, we had a wonderful time which was crowned with Miaa`s success at the Miss Virtual World contest.

The formal gown Miaa worn by the contest was created by Nicky Ree. Congrats to Nicky, too.

On November 18, 1993, magic happened before the eyes of the nineties MTV generation when Nirvana recorded a version of the network’s popular segment, “Unplugged.”  The acoustic concert, seemingly ironic for a band known for their distorted grunge/alternative type music, was set in Sony Music Studios in New York City.  The concert aired on MTV the following month.  Since the show had been such a hit with viewers, producers teamed up to produce the evenings events into an album.  This album has been quite a hit with listeners for so many reasons.  Perhaps the greatest reason for this album’s success lies within the fact that the listener doesn’t need the visual of the MTV show to grasp the beauty of this performance.  And yes, the setting was beautiful-there were candles and flowers and low light settings because Kurt Cobain wanted it to appear as a funeral.  However, the visual is unneccessary for this album.  The album proves to hold its own and does not fail to satisfy.  This, kids, is musical genius at its best.

The album begins with “About a Girl,” off the band’s debut album, Bleach (1989).  The first song on every well put together album should always set the mood for the rest of the disc.  This performance does just that.  Although every song performed is not from the same album or even written by the band, (some were covered by The Meat Puppets, The Vaselines, and Lead Belly) this album is tied together beautifully.  The rules for MTV’s Unplugged is that the performance must be “unplugged,” acoustic instruments only.  By converting their grunge tunes into acoustic works, a whirlwind of change comes over Nirvana, the listener, your stereo; the sounds created are so captivating. And this song is the beginning of your acoustic journey.

The album progresses to “Come as You Are,” from the band’s 1991 album, Nevermind. The tempo of this song is slightly slowed, as it is now an acoustic version.  The strumming however, is heavy.  This version features more guitarists allowing the song to take on a more melodic feel.  Each piece of the song works together to bring it together and make the melodies work.

Next is “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam,” a Vaselines cover.  This is the first song on the album to feature an accordion played by Krist Novoselic.  The cover was done gracefully and the tempo was slowed down a bit from the original however the strumming patterns were kept the same. I find it impressive that Kurt Cobain used his celebrity to give recognition to bands who may have been unheard of in the mainstream.  For those who never read more into the sensitive man that Kurt Cobain really was, this cover was quite unexpected.

The next song on the album, “The Man Who Sold the World,” is a cover originally by David Bowie.  The song features an acoustic electric guitar for the riffs and solos.  The bass walk-down featured in this song is very distinct and impressive on Krist Novoselic’s part.  Kurt Cobain can actually be heard making a mistake on the guitar solo in the song, as well. This is something I’m sure most listeners do not notice.  To me it gives the album a raw and authentic character; much like Nirvana.

The song that follows, “Pennyroyal Tea,” from Nirvana’s 1993 album, In Utero, features Kurt Cobain solo.  By performing a song with such strong personal lyrics about how he felt about his life, this version of the song is much more intimate than the In Utero version.  At the end of the song, a band mate tells Kurt he did a good job, he laughs and says, “Shut up,” because he was shy on stage.

The album moves right into “Dumb,” which was also from In Utero. The goal of the band was to stray from the popular hits they had put out.  However, acoustically, “Dumb,” just works.  It is clear that drummer, Dave Grohl is not hitting the drums as hard as he normally would have.  He was given drum brushes and such equipment used by classical percussionists to keep him from hitting them too hard.  Also featured in this song is a violin-or instrument in the same family, which definitely brings this song into a new direction.

The next song is “Polly.” Overall, this song was performed well. However, MTV/network television can be to blame for the altering of lyrics to fit the standards of what can be said on television.  Cue  the seven things you cannot say on TV….

The album moves into “On a Plain,” from the album Nevermind. The tones and tempo of the song are very precise and the vocals appear to get louder towards the end of the song.   This song has a catching flow; acoustically this song is sensational.

In a change of moods, the album progresses into “Something in the Way,” also from Nevermind. This instruments in this song, as they are in the original, are tuned down to a deeper tone.  Again appearing in this song is a violin of some sort.  Although the skeletal structure of the song remained the same, moderate alterations such as the violin, replicate the song in an entirely new fashion.  At the end of the song the band can be heard mocking the demands of rich rock stars-adding light to the emotionally deep performance.

The next three songs are covers of  Meat Puppets’ songs. What could anger MTV execs more than hearing Nirvana wouldn’t be playing hits like “Teen Spirit?” Well, hearing that Nirvana would be accompanied by underground guests who weren’t Eddie Vedder.  Brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets were brought on stage to play guitar with Nirvana for the three songs.  “Plateau” was the first of the them. Part of the reason this song is so captivating is its authenticity.  Kurt purposely chose cover songs that were challenging for him vocally.  This is evident in this song.  To the naked ear, it may sound like rubbish.  To someone who appreciates music, this is magic.

The emotional, “Oh Me,” soon follows “Plateau.”  The song runs so smoothly; and it seems that Kurt was able to attack the vocals.  The drums on this song are faint, where the strumming of the guitars at times can be rather powerful.  This song is emotionally enthralling.

The song that follows is “Lake of Fire.”  The strain in Kurt’s voice really allows the listener to understand how hard he tried to recreate this song.  The lyrical content of this song is different from anything in the mainstream-for the band was not a mainstream band to say the least.  This cover gives the audience/listener a new perspective of the presentation of music.

The last of Nirvana’s orignal works (not quite the end of the album!), “All Apologies,” from the album In Utero, follows.  Not to be biased, but this is the most beautiful song on the entire album.  Kurt pours his heart into this song.  Not only was the setting of the show made to look like a funeral just months before Cobain’s death, the choice of this song is alluding perhaps to how Kurt felt about his own life and death.  His pain can be felt in this song more than the others.  “In the sun/in the sun I feel as one/In the sun/In the sun/I’m married/Burried…”

The last song on the album is a cover of the Lead Belly song “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” Leadbelly was an African-American folk singer in the mid 1930s to late 1940s.  This is yet another song that was a hurdle to leap for Kurt vocally.  Towards the end of the song Kurt puts his own twist on things and belts out the lyrics with everything he has.  If you were to watch the performance you can see that Kurt is actually shaking while singing this.  However, as the visual is not needed the sheer sound of his voice is ultimately enough to send chills up your spine. There was no better way to end this concert.  If the band was looking for a way to leave their audience in awe, this was the way to do it.

The key element to this Unplugged album is vulnerability.  Nirvana was known for their heavy distortion and grunge sound; this acoustic performance brought them out of their element to try something new.  Unlike most bands, they did not just do a run-through of their hits, they strayed from the norm and carried out raw versions of some of their own songs along with songs from bands who were not in the contemporary mainstream music scene.  The intimacy of the performance, the difference in setting, the difference in song choice, the challenging vocals and music, and being broadcasted in front of millions while doing so created the vulnerability that Nirvana needed to successfully create such a stunning piece of work.  Going against the grain big-shot MTV execs and playing what he wanted instead of playing hits off the charts showed that this performance meant more to Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl than the lime-light; it was about playing music together as a band for others to listen to, to pay respects to bands who were not asked by MTV to perform, and to put on a performance that would be the juncture of their careers.

If you haven’t heard this album yet, go check it out. You will be blown away.

A group of concerned citizens met last Sunday morning in the Back Bay for a training session on how to spot Asian Longhorn Beetles (ALB).

The pests are invasive, wood-boring insects originating in Asia and discovered in Worcester, Mass. in August 2008. They attack many different kinds trees such as maple, birch, elm, willow and chestnut. The beetles themselves are shiny black with white spots and about an inch long.

“We have no way of dealing with these beetles other than to take the entire tree down,” said Plant Pest Survey Coordinator with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, Jennifer Forman Orth. “We had to take down 25,000 trees in Worcester.”

Back Bay residents ignored the rain and met at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue Mall and Arlington Street armed with binoculars and rain jackets to learn how to spot ALB and ALB tree damage.

“This is so important to the Back Bay,” said Anne Swanson and organized the event. “It would be a huge loss to loose the limited amount of trees we have.”

The group of about fifteen huddled around Orth, sharing umbrellas, as she explained what to be aware of when looking for ALB damage.

“You want to look for random exit holes, which are perfectly round and smooth. They almost look drilled,” Orth said, as she passed around a piece of wood from Wooster that had been attacked by ALB.

Orth said that spotting tree damage from the ground can be hard because beetles start at the tops of trees and work their way down.

After the brief training session, the group spilt up and walked up and down the Commonwealth Avenue Mall surveying trees for bore holes.

“It’s truly amazing what volunteers can do,” said Penny Cherubino, a Back Bay resident and journalist with bostonzest.com. “The Back Bay dog owners have been trained to look for Dutch Elm disease in trees and we hope to do the same with Asian Longhorn Beetles.”

ALB are not affected by the cold and thrive in all seasons, said Orth. The best time to look for evidence of damage is on a sunny day in late fall when the trees have lost most of their leaves and you can see to the top.

“If you buy firewood, it is important to see where it is coming from,” said Orth, “That is a major way ALB gets spread.” Orth recommended the website dontmovefirewood.org for more information.

Swanson plans on orchestrating at least one more session on ALB for Back Bay residents before the fall is over. “This is an issue that is very important to me,” she said.

“Never doubt what a neighborhood can do,” said Cherubino.

Orth stressed that volunteers are the people who make a major difference in discovering and preventing the spread of ALB.

“The Asian Longhorn Beetle was in Wooster for 12 years before it was discovered in 2008, so it is incredibly important to make people aware of the issue,” Orth said.

Ieri, 28 noiembrie, am fost in excursie cu clasa mea si inca o clasa de a 10-a. Am fost la targul de carte si in loc de teatru, la film. Pe drum, faimoasa trupa de alternativ/metal/whatever rock iEdy si Lory ne-a cantat cateva (mai) melodii. La targul de carte am ajuns pe la 10-11 parca… nu mai stiu exact. Am fost singurul tâmpit (normal… mai exista altul ca mine? :> ) care a mers in tricou. Am colindat cu Sorin pe la toate standurile. Desi am pus ochii pe multe, mi-am luat foarte putine (multe fata de cate si-au luat toti ceilalti… cu mici exceptii). Mai exact, mi-am luat un mic ghid ortopedic si ortografic roman (cuvintele schimbate in doom… ca am ramas in urma), 2 carti legate de it (una legata de retele si una mai avansata pentru nu-stiu-ce) si doua romane – The host (Gazda) scrisa de Stephenie Meyer (aia care a scris si seria Twilight) si The lost symbol (Simbolul pierdut) de Dan Brown (ala care a scris Codul lui DaVinci si Ingeri si Demoni). The lost symbol vroiam sa o iau peste 2 luni cand aparea in romana, dar nu am putut sa astept si am luat-o in engleza (abia mai invat cate ceva). Din cate am vazut, este foarte interesanta. Totul pleaca de la un vechi document inchis intr-un seif al CIA in 1991, document in care este scrisa locatia unui portal catre un loc subteran. Personajul principal este aelasi ca si cel din romanele mai sus amintite – Roberd Langdon, un profesor care se ocupa de simboluri. Am mai observat ca se leaga de masoni si ritualurile lor, chiar si de fata ascunsa a acestora (secrete, istorie si altele). In fine… o sa ii fac un rezumat cand o sa-l termin de citit.

Dupa targul de carte, ne-am dus in mall la film. Am ajuns pe la 1:30 si nu am avut de ales decat intre New Moon si Iubire fara preaviz (parca asa se numea). La al 2-lea nu m-am dus pentru ca suna a film de dragoste d-ala siropos si nu avea rost ca nu prea e genul meu, asa ca m-am dus la New moon (de fapt nu m-as fi dus la niciunul… dar daca Andreea, Roxana si Alina se duceau si m-au tot batul la cap cu cateva zile inainte, impreuna cu Ade, ca e tare si ca merita vazut, m-am dus si eu sa-l vad). Filmul a fost ok… dupa mine povestea ar avea nota 8 din 10 (vampiri buni ce se indragostesc de fetite sweet), actorii ar avea 4 din 10 (si da Andreea… stiu ca Jacob e bun… mi-ai zis asta tot fimul… dar Ed si Bella au fost praf… mai bine era sora lui Ed in locul Bellei… mi se pare mai frumoasa)… ce mi-a placut la film? Pai… mi-au placut efectele, membrii din clanul Volturilor si partea in care cei doi indragostiti aleargau in slo-mo prin padure (pentru ca toate fetele salivau iar eu nu mai puteam din ras)…. scena parca era rupta din desene animate sau comedii proaste (andreea :> Inorogi, curcubee…. oooh… si floricele… ce sweet :-&). Ce m-a enervat… nu stiu… ar fi cam multe de spus… cel mai mult m-a enervat Bella… tot filmul si-a muscat buzele si si-a ros degetele. Pacat ca albu’ nu i-a facut nimic frigidei

In cora l-am vazut pe Romeo Fantastik. Am ras cu Sorin incontinuu… Era imbracat cu o bluza alba (mulata… ca sa se vada burta aia mare), blugi negrii (tot mulati), ochelari de soare, parul unsuros dat pe spate si ondulat la capete, cu o piranda dupa el si o pitzipoanca data cu var pe fata, machiata strident, toace pana-n gat,si buzitele roz iesit in afara de la atata munca cu gura. In fine… din descriere nu va puteti da seama cum arata si cat am ras. La un moment dat a trecut pe langa masa la care eram eu si radeam de nu puteam in spatele lui,si cred ca m-a auzit piranda ca s-a intors la mine. In clipa aia am inceput sa rad si mai tare.

Nu stiu cum a fost ziua de ieri pentru ceilalti, dar pentru mine a fost extraordinara. M-am simtit foarte bine si ma bucur ca am mai iesit si eu pe afara

PS: Ieri cand am iesit de la film am vazut un poster maaare cu Prince of Persia pe care scria “Coming soon!”. Abia astept

Am un vecin. Am mai multi vecini dar asta saracu’ are acum o problema. Se pare ca este un om normal, nici foarte foarte nici prea prea, cu familie, un copil, afacerist se pare si cu un superb Range Rover HSE Sport alb. Nimic interesant pana acum. Doar ca ieri dimineata merg spre masina mea, parcata si ea in aceeasi zona cu acest Range Rover, undeva mai departe de el, trec pe langa Rover si ce sa vad..? masina era pusa pe 4 bucati de BCA. Nu mai avea roti. Ei spuneti si voi. Comanda serioasa se pare. De vo’ cateva zile eu am observat ca omu’ isi schimbase jentile cu unele noi noute si mult mai arataoase decat celelalte. Se pare ca a fost urmarit si la o comanda scurta asta a fost.

Este groaznic ce se intampla. Cand ma gandesc sa si eu imi pot gasi masina pe butuci. Off..ce tara de hoti. Fura astia orice.

Ar putea omu nostru sa ceara ajutorul primariei pentru a-i pune la dispozitie imaginile filmate cu camerele amplasate in intersectie si pe blocul de langa carosabil. Cica acele imagini stau in arhiva 3 zile.

Este putin probabil ca isi va mai putea recupera rotile. Militia no’ sa faca nimic ca este o munca in plus pentru ei..asa ca..Ghinion.

She was probably lonely but not much like me because I think she kept it bottled, tightly like she does. Lonely people see it deep down in each other’s eyes; they hear it rasped and breathed away in otherwise nondescript sighs. And I met her at a party and thought, fuck it, what’s to lose? We lived like Caspians for seasons, watching early morning news and meeting friends at local concerts, getting drunk and probably high. Every word of every story that I told her was a lie but still she pressed herself against me, and all my friends know I’m weak. She pressed her finger to my lip and told me sharply not to speak.
