Na de Zesdaagsen van Dortmund en Milaan sneuvelt ook die van Hasselt in 2010 na vier uitgaven in de Ethias Arena, wegens de niet haalbare leefbaarheid ondanks 18.000 toeschouwers vorige editie. Een gloednieuwe Cyclocross Masters neemt de plaats in op 24 februari 2010, waarbij de wereldtop in zal aantreden.

Nys en Alberts nemen het peterschap voor hun rekening en zullen moeten optornen tegen onder andere Wellens en Stybar in drie veldritdisciplines: een tijdrit, een korte veldrit en een puntenkoers.

De Cyclocross Masters wil op deze manier de indoorveldrit promoten als spektakelsport.

The Ronald Albert and Kenneth McFarlan Arts Impact Award

This annual scholarship in the amount of $1000.00 is intended for a Sandusky High School senior who has excelled in arts or music in their time at Sandusky High.

The purpose of this award is to commemorate the careers of Mr. Ron Albert and Mr. Ken McFarlan, who spent their teaching years helping students understand the importance and beauty of music as a part of the high school experience. It is our hope that with this award, the winning student will use the money to fund his or her higher education toward a degree where the student’s talents will lead to a rewarding career.

The greater impact of this award will be both reminding society of the importance of artistic endeavors and encouraging creative people to be involved with their community in creative ways.

The U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, stated in August 2009 that only 57% of 8th graders have the opportunity to study music, while only 47% have access to studying art. These numbers are saddening, so we feel it is vital to offer financial encouragement to a young SHS grad who is creative, successful and immersed in arts or music.

The student who receives the scholarship each year will be selected by the SHS Scholarship Committee and must meet the following criteria:

1. Selected student will have a GPA of at least 3.2 overall

2. Selected student must be involved in any of the following: Choir, Band, Orchestra, Fine Arts, Graphic Arts, Photography, Commercial Arts, or any other artistic for-credit courses, whether general or vocational, that may be added to Sandusky High School’s curriculum in the future.

3. Selected student will not receive funds until he or she can prove acceptance to an accredited institution of higher learning. The student will have 6 months from the time of selection to prove acceptance and receive funds.

4. Although not required, involvement in extracurricular activities like the annual musical, art club, jazz band, drama club and other creative non-credit outlets available at SHS will be considered in high regard at time of selection.

“Can you believe what Al Gore said on the front page of the Toronto Star yesterday?   You know, Al Gore, the guy who was VP under Bill Clinton for eight years. He actually said that the Alberta tar sands are a threat to human existence. I’m telling you, even the the word ‘Armageddon’ was in the article, although I don’t actually know if Gore said that specific word. It’s pretty amazing, eh?”

“Sorry Phil, what’s your point, if you don’t mind me asking that?”

“My point is that this is the same Al Gore who was the number two guy in the most powerful country on Earth for eight years straight and who is the winner — if you ask me –  of the 2000 US Presidential elections and, to top it all off, is a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work on the environment and to top it all off all over again, he also has longstanding, and entirely warm ties to the current US administration. He’s has ‘tossed the gauntlet’ at Canada. I think he’s signalling that the US government will be playing hard-ball about the environmental consequences of the oil sands, and that’s going to  jeopardize billions of dollars and jobs in Alberta. You gotta realize that the folks who own and work in the sands are Harper’s biggest supporters. OK, so I don’t know exactly how this is going to play out but I think that this means Harper is toast. Finis.”

“So  … OK, you’re telling me that Gore just sort of slapped Harper upside the head in public by telling Harper’s big oil buddies in Alberta that their investments might end up losing them some money.”

PHILIP
“I don’t think I could say it better than that, actually.”

“OK, like the kids say: “‘Is this is a good thing?’”

“Holy smokes. You bet it’s a good thing.  I know I tell you this stuff all the time, even if it doesn’t get into the blog. It’s simple,man. I don’t think that Stephen Harper is good for Canada. I actually think he’s dangerous, maybe not him specifically but some of the people around him, that’s for sure. And that’s not a risk I want to take. I’ve got four kids and a mortgage … sorry, Tony, you heard all this stuff before. And now, he can’t even provide diplomatic cover for his oil buddies.

“Look, there’s a lot of people at the top of the Harper government who openly supported the Bush Administration, including even Harper himself for god’s sake. My basic point is that I’m telling you, if you give the Harper guys a majority in Parliament, all I can say is “watch out”, because it’s going to be a disaster. Environment, economy, you name it. Sure, I know that Ignatieff supported the Iraq War in the beginning. But c’mon.  At least Ignatieff had the huevos to own up to his mistake in public. And he didn’t support Bush’s other crazy policies the way Harper has. Heyman, everybody, including even smart guys like Ignatieff, they learn something when it’s the first time the situation has ever come up, like deciding to go to war in Iraq in 2003, for example. Let’s be honest. Quite a few Canadians supported the Iraq War in the beginning. Face it, when the guys who won World War Two [the Americans] ask us for military support, you at least have to give them the time of day, if you know what I mean.

Anyway,  at least Ignatieff took some time to think about how the actual Iraq War actually played out over actual time after it started, and he learned what the whole world also learned about the actual Bush Administration decision processes in regard to the Iraq War.”

Anyway, you know what I can’t figure out?  Somehow, I think people think that having the Liberals  in Ottawa for the next few years won’t make any difference.  Now maybe I’m missing something. If our PM and the US President are actually, true-blue, real-life friends — which you can see they are, you know, friends like you and me — then international negotiations about things like the oil sands will be better for Canada if Ignatieff’s the Prime Minister. After all, the top folks make make the final decisions, no?

You know, I bet that Ignatieff has the secret phone number for Obama’s Blackberry. And I bet Harper doesn’t.” [Note from Philip: I really have no idea if this is true.]

“The point is, it’s weird. Ignatieff’s Liberals would do a better job protecting Alberta’s interests than Harper can possibly do. If that’s true, then Albertans should be voting en masse for Ignatieff. It’s weirdly simple, in a way.”

“So you think Ignatieff should be our next Prime Minister?”

“Duh.”

“De 5de editie van de GP van Hasselt was een heuse top-editie. De temperatuur piekte en er was een massa volk opgedaagd in het Kapermolenpark van Hasselt. Het duel Nijs – Albert, wat iedereen verwachtte, kwam er niet. Het werd een sprint tussen 4 jonge leeuwen en uiteindelijk ging Stybar met de eerste plaats lopen,” aldus Rob Beenders op zijn blog (zie links op de foto, onderaan artikel).

Ook de Wereldwinkel van Hasselt bedankt bij deze nogmaals de organisatoren, die fair trade stukje bij beetje meer integreren in hun organisatie.

Ondertussen liet Hans Van Kasteren – ook broodheer van Stybar en Bart Wellens – weten dat hij als organisator van de Superprestige Veldrijden in Zonhoven (7 februari) ook voor fairtradepakketten kiest!

Dàt is typisch voor het fenomeen fair trade, voor wie er maar geen kop of staart aan kan krijgen: inspireren en geïnspireerd worden.

National Theatre – Drury Lane

War Horse is the enchanting stage adaption of Michael Morpurgo’s much loved children’s novel. It tells the story of a horse who in the beginnings of his life is sold at auction to the hapless drunk Magellan, who not wanting to lose face pays a premium price for the part thoroughbred.  His long suffering wife is dismayed as the money spent on the horse was ment for the mortgage, and decides the only way for them to make their money back is to raise the horse and sell it when it’s fully grown.  This job goes to her young son Albert  who soon develops a close bond to the horse and names him Joey.  When Joey is fully grown war is declared and Albert’s father discovers that a high price is being offered for strong horses to join the Calvary and he promptly sells Joey.  Albert is devastated about Joey going to war and although only 16 he lies about his age, joins the army and searches for his long lost friend.  The play then follows the two stories of Joey & Albert fighting through the horror that is World War 1.   The story,  as any story about WW1 is heartbreaking, emphasising the waste of so many young lives, on both sides of the fight; men and animal being worked to exhaustion in nothing but hellish conditions, undernourished and under protected.  All the animals in War Horse are portrayed by puppets; Joey and Topthorn (another horse who Joey fights alongside in the war) are the most impressive and are moved by three puppeteers.  Although the puppeteers are clearly visible when moving the horses, you soon forget they are there and only see a living and breathing animal in front of you.  When an animal dies the puppeteers crawl out from the carcass and walk off stage like a spirit leaving a body.  The heart and soul they put into these animals is incredible, and surely something for everyone to witness.   Have a look at YouTube trailers to see for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-bni4QqSv4.  Over all the production is out of this world, the story truly heart-warming and the response from the crowd (standing ovation all round) is proof that War Horse wins the hearts of its audience.

Albert Pujols won his third career MVP and his second consecutive on Tuesday.

Pujols becomes the first player to win consecutive MVPs since Barry Bonds did it from 2001 to 2004.

He beat out runner-up Hanley Ramirez, Ryan Howard finished third and the Brewers’ Prince Fielder finished fourth in the voting. It would have been a long shot for Prince to win but I would have loved to see it.

Pujols hit 47 home runs, had 135 RBIs, scored a league leading 127 runs and played exceptional defense all season long for the St. Louis Cardinals, who were a playoff team but were eliminated right away against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pujols is under contract for next year with a $16 million option for 2011. You have to believe the Cardinals want to lock this guy up. But, deep down I think he’ll test the market.

Einstein fue considerado por la revista Time como el científico del siglo XX.

En 2005 se celebraron los cien años del llamado Annus Mirabilis(año milagroso) de Einstein.

En su honra fue atribuido su nombre a una unidad de la fotoquímica (el einstein) y a un elemento químico (el einstenio).

Mijn functie zou zijn om het gebrabbel van Martens en co in duidelijke verstaanbare taal om te zetten.. dit was nodig omdat geen kat nog begreep waar ze het in MijnNaam over hadden.. Niet Nys of Albert, maar wel de Tsjech Stybar werd de winnaar van de eindsprint in deze cyclocross vóór Pauwels. Wereldkampioen Albert spurtte het snelst voor de derde plaats.

Het duel tussen Nys en Albert was halverwege wedstrijd al beslecht doordat Belgisch Kampioen Nys grote achterstand opliep door materiaalpech en pas zesde eindigde.

Door deze derde plaats verstevigt Albert zijn leidersplaats in het GvA-trofee-klassement.

In perhaps one of the oddest moments of the week, 50 Cent’s crew got tangled up with longtime basketball announcer Marv Albert backstage at “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Wednesday (November 18). 50 and Marv both appeared on the show that night, and according to the Los Angeles Times, Albert received a chilly reception from 50’s entourage when he arrived at the studio. Apparently, they didn’t recognize the venerable voice of the NBA, and they were under the impression he was trying to impose on 50’s interview. So when the broadcaster entered the building, what went down? Punches were thrown, obscenities were spat out and things got quite hostile.

Although the details remain unclear, the 68-year-old Albert was in the middle of it all. Even when a Kimmel staffer identified Albert, 50’s entourage remained unswayed. Somehow, Albert got out of there unscathed, remarking, “Did you see that? I thought they were kidding, then I realized they weren’t.”

Both Albert and 50 were interviewed later and neither made any reference to the incident. In their defense, most people know Albert’s voice more than his face. In fact, Albert could have probably avoided the whole incident had he simply shouted “LeBron James for three! Yes!”

Surely most of you had heard of him as a genius and his equation for light; E=mc² but is it? Albert Einstein born in 14th March 1879 in the town of Ulm, Germany. In his younger age, he was intrigued by a simple yet authentic compass that had been given by his fellow dad whose name is Hermann Einstein. He’s far more different than most of us; when he didn’t understand something, it upset him and he kept on and on trying to work until he’d got it. He was fascinated by magnetism for the rest of his life, though he never quite managed to explain how it fitted into the rest of the universe.

Another reason that Albert got succulented in science was because of Uncle Jakob. Uncle Jakob was an engineer and also Hermann’s business partner, and he told Albert about algebra and geometry and would give him maths problems to solve for fun. Not what everyone would call it fun, but Uncle Jakob was great at making things seemly like a game to the young lad, and anyway they can’t watch television because it hadn’t been invented. Albert was to find his early interest in geometry very useful later, when it came to explaining how gravity worked, and he was impressed to find that ingeometry amazing things can be prove by simple logical reasoning and common sense.

During his childhood period, Albert enters the Peter’s School at nine. He hated the school because it’s like a little barracks that you could fit 70 students into a minuscule class. He was obedient, he didn’t make a fuss about it and he got good marks in most subjects that is taught, but he wasn’t happy. Soon he became a loner and it will remain as it is for the rest of his life. After a few years at his first school, he moved on to another, called Lutipold. He hated that one too, Why? Well, the school of Lutipold stated that Latin and Geek are compulsory which Albert doesn’t like the sound of it because he’s just not into those stuff. In addition, students can’t learn physics for the first year and yet students must be at year seven to apply which made Albert to wait but later on he succeed learning physics before year seven.

Okay, lets cut to the chase. Albert Einstein was a theoretical Physicists who had the same job as Isaac Newton, he invented a new radical idea of gravity which was created by a go-getters in the mid 14th century called Isaac Newton but Albert modified it into a unify theory of gravitation which is based on The Universal Gravitation that is proposed by Isaac Newton in which it stated that the first, second and third law of gravity. This unification of the theory has changed the name to General Relativity, and he proposed that gravity slows time, for example, you were born in 2010 and your parents had gone to outer-space and travel around the universe for 20 years, after 20 years of travelling, they came back and visit you and perhaps they look 20 -30 times young than you. Besides that, it explains the perihelion advance of Mercury, prediction of thedeflection of light by gravity and gravitational lensing, the first fluctuation dissipation theorem which explained the Brownian movement of molecules, the photon theory and wave-particle duality, the quantum theory of atomic motion in solids, the zero-point energy concept, the semiclassical version of the Schrödinger equation, and the quantum theory of a monatomic gas which predicted Bose-Einstein condensation.

As for Special Relativity, it is proposed in 1905 by Albert and it’ll elucidate the theory of Galileo’s principle of relativity–that all uniform motion is relative, and that there is no absolute and well-defined state of rest from mechanics to all the laws of physics, including both the laws of mechanics and of electrodynamics, whatever they may be. Special relativity incorporates the principle that the speed of light is the same for all inertial observers regardless of the state of motion of the source.

Centerfielder Colby Rasmus worried hitting coach Al McRae early in the season by insisting that he was just trying to differentiate between his "regular" and "power" swings.

Cardinal center fielder Colby Rasmus expressed disappointment today after taking time to reflect on his 2009 season. Rasmus admitted disappointment after finishing the year with a lower batting average, fewer home runs and less RBIs than his character in the game MLB 2K9. Rasmus finished his virtual season early in June of 2009 and was hoping that his positive results in the game would translate into success on the field.

“People put a lot of time into these games to make them look and feel as realistic as possible,” said Rasmus, “I thought that how my character performed at the virtual Major League level would let me know how smooth my transition from the minors would go.” Rasmus began his 2K9 season in early February after waiting in line for 7 hours before the midnight release of the game.

“I understood striking out the first few times in the majors, but I thought once I got the hang of the timing, bat speed, and the pitcher’s movements that my batting average would be more reflective of the .837 that my avatar predicted.” Rasmus finished the year with a .251 batting average, which though respectable for a rookie, was far below his anticipations.

“I was really looking forward to a 234 home run, 467 RBI, and 78 stolen base season. I think that would have definitely secured me more votes for Rookie of the Year, and possibly MVP depending on how Albert did,” Rasmus continued, “I thought the majors were just a lot easier than the minors and my numbers would skyrocket when I got here. I was really looking forward to a home run every other at bat or so, but man, real baseball is a lot harder than 2K9 makes it out to be.”

Rasmus also expressed concern about the production of team as a whole. “We weren’t the 160 win team I thought we’d be. I figured we might drop a game or two until we figured out how to get the pitches in the zone and figure out the controls. There would definitely be some gaffs when we accidentally bunted instead of swinging away and threw to the wrong base a few times, but man, I never thought we’d lose a game after the first month or so.”

“Production was way down across the board. Carpenter and Wainwright didn’t combine for over 800 strikeouts and their ERAs were both over 1.00. I really didn’t think they’d be that far away from what their virtual selves depicted, but they both had decent seasons despite have almost double their predicted ERAs and failing to pitch 10 no-hitters apiece. Albert managed to put together another MVP caliber season, but I fully expected him to almost match my numbers and at least triple the home run record.” Rasmus was most taken aback by the fact that the Cardinals were defeated in the NLCS instead of finishing the playoffs with a World Series victory in 11 games. The Cardinals were also expected to outscore their opponents this season 2,745-43.

“I think that my numbers were down because I had to split time with Rick Ankiel. In my season, that guy didn’t see an inning,” Rasmus did have complimentary reports for one member of the Cardinal’s squad. “Jason LaRue played in 51 games this year and that’s way more than I played him. He also had 2 homers and that’s about 2 more than he had the entire season.”

Rasmus is focused on making his 2010 season more closely resemble his video game numbers, but voiced concern about a dip in production after switching the difficulty from “Easy” to “Normal.”

De parcoursbouwers van de Grote Prijs van Hasselt veldrijden zijn volop aan het werk in het Kapermolenpark om op tijd klaar te zijn voor de grote dag op zaterdag 21 november. De parcoursontwerpers en -bouwers zijn Vic Maes en Paul Hereygers. De coördinatie bij de opbouwwerken ligt bij Rob Beenders, die samen met zijn broer ook de handen uit de mouwen steekt om links en rechts te helpen en bij te springen.

De twee inwoners van Tremelo, Niels Albert en Sven Nys, zijn vriendschappelijk, beleefd en lief voor elkaar voor de camera, maar in de cyclocross zijn het twee aartsrivalen. Grote supportersgroepen steunen hun idolen en maken op gepaste tijden afkeurende gebaren en geven negatieve commentaar, wanneer de ene de andere hindert tijdens de veldrit. Hopelijk zien we ook opnieuw zo’n heroïsch duel in de modder van Kapermolen. Of wint een outsider?

De kaartverkoop verloopt vlot. Al meer dan 700 zijn er al de deur uit. Je kan nog kaarten kopen tot en met vrijdag 20 november op de Dienst Toerisme in de Lombaardstraat. Tickets in voorverkoop kosten 8 euro. Aan de kassa betaal je  10 euro(9 euro indien je lid bent van de KBWB). De toegang is gratis voor kinderen geboren na 01/01/1997. Dit geldt echter niet voor de VIP-locaties.

In the year 2177 Jack Jacobs worked in Area 51 and was assigned as lead scientist to the top secret Advanced Gravity Drive (AGD) project code-named Orion Nine. Jacobs was recognized as one of the top gravity propulsion experts in this field even before he finished his first doctorate. Dr. Brad Gilmore, another Area 51 scientist, was secretly working on interfacing his lab’s prototype organic supercomputer into the spaceship’s systems and subsystems, alongside Jack Jacobs’s secret quantum gravity drive technology.

After concurring with Dr. Gilmore, it was agreed that Jack should take an unauthorized trial test on the day before the scheduled lift off. Unexpected and unexplained, the forces of gravity, light, and time-formulation caused a malfunction.

Jack found himself off-course with the soft-spoken organic supercomputer named Jennifer, created by Dr. Gilmore. Together with her pretty holographic images they traveled through space for a period of sixteen years. Finally arriving back at earth, they had expected to be in the year 2199. They discovered that their spaceship’s quantum gravity drive was caught up in a series of time distortions. They found themselves 100 years into the past. Jennifer explained it this way: “The harmonic of their distortion pulsated backwards moving them back in time.”

The complex plot takes the reader on a journey through space that includes the critical predicaments faced by Jack Jacobs and Jennifer, as well as the solutions they accomplish though intricate quantum mathematical hieroglyphics, formulations and systems whose accuracy are futuristic.

As a reader I did find it hard to identify with Jack’s intelligence, however, other glimpses of Jack’s personality came through in flashbacks, daydreams, and feelings expressed for Jennifer as her personality continued to emerge.

I personally have gained a new respect for members of the NASA team and those in the aeronautical industry. I stand in awe of the dedication and giftedness of these men and women. It is interesting to reflect that during my lifetime I have seen the fulfillment of many futuristic dreams that came from books like this classified as fantasy and science fiction. Kudos’ to Albert Abraham and others like him who can articulate in imaginative story form the outer reaches of our galaxies.

Albert Abraham combines his experience, education, and training in the field of aerospace engineering with a gifted ability to dream and to put those dreams on paper in the form of an imaginative, futuristic, fantasy novel that is both informational and entertaining. His writing is convincing, and credible in futuristic possibilities, yet, impossible in light of today’s research and scientific schemes.

A few unanswered questions, unresolved problems, and the unexpected, exciting final chapter leave the door open for a promised sequel to “Jack Jacobs and the Doomsday Time Machine,” by Albert S. Abraham.

The babies are two days old and we don’t know what to call them. In the NICU they like to put a poster up in each baby’s incubator that reads, “Hi my name…” so that all the different doctors and nurses who work there can relate to the babies as people. Our babies are still “triplet 1″ and “triplet 2″.

I draw up a shortlist.

“I still like Walter and Albert,” says Rich. “No way, I say. “I am not having children called Wally and Bert.” “Why not?” says Rich looking genuinely disappointed. “It’s too comedy. We might as well just call them Stan and Ollie, Eric and Ernie.” “That’s a good idea.”

“No. I like Lorcan and Aidan for the boys. Or Thady.” “I’m not having all my children with Paddy names,” says Rich hotly. “Oi.” “I’m not being funny, but I’m not Irish.  Saoirse was bad enough.”

“OK. Well what then? Is the girl going to be Maeve?” “I don’t know she doesn’t look like a Maeve.” “I know. She’s more of an Orla.” “Yes Orla suits her.” “Lets call her that then,” I say, excited to have agreed on at least one of them. Naming a child is hard. So much of who you are and how you are perceived in the world depends on your moniker. Orla means golden in Gaelic, and since the slight jaundice is giving her a sort of all-over St Tropez tan, it seems to fit.

“Well my next favourite boy’s name is Frank,” says Rich. “As in Francis?”. “Yes.” “OK, one of them can be Francis, known as Frank. That’s nice. That will be triplet 2.”  ”And since you chose Saoirse and Orla, I should choose the boys. I like Reuben.” “No, sometimes as much as I have Jew envy, we are Catholic and Reuben is just too old Testament.” “All right, what then?” Rich hates this naming game. He has refused to to talk about it until now, but we must make a decision soon.

“I still like Thady,” I say. It’s the abbreviated form of the name Thaddeus, pronounced with a hard t as in Thomas.” I first heard it in Ireland years ago, but I don’t tell Rich that. I’m going to sneak another paddy name under the wire.  ”Thady… Thady,” says Rich trying it out. “Thady Bear… won’t he just get called Thady Bear?” “What’s wrong with that ? I like it.”

“OK. Thady, Frank and Orla”, says Rich finally.
