If you haven’t heard, the latest edition of French Vogue features a white (Dutch) model in black face and “ethic styled” clothing according CNN.com. While I haven’t read the issue myself, apparently the magazine featured some of the world’s top super models although NONE of them were black.

Thoughts on this…

a. French Vogue ALWAYS features the top names in the modeling industry
b. French Vogue is NOT a first-time offender on this front. The fashionista magazine has a long history of singling out only white models for its editorials photo spreads
c. DUDE! You can’t find a fucking beautiful black woman? WTF?!? Here. Have my list of women I would love to sleep with any day of the muther fucking week:

a. Naomi Campbell, Hedi Slimane, Alek Wek, Sessilee Lopez, Chanel Iman, Arlenis Sosa Pena, Jourdan Dunn – just to name a few beauties I have admired upon occasion…. *coughs*

Shame on you Vogue. Tisk-tisk.

London lacks blushing beauties. I’m a big fan of colour so cannot avoid the rows of powder and cream blush when scouting around beauty departments and make-up stores. The biggest benefit of blusher is the definition it provides (who doesn’t want razor-sharp cheek bones?!), not to mention that lovely healthy effect of looking like you have just walked in from a stroll by the sea.

How to Apply

Do not be afraid of applying colour, the trick is to blend, start with a tiny amount on your brush and blend along the contours of your cheek bone, from the apple to the temple, then blend some more.

What to Use

The best way to find what suits you is to walk into any beauty department and have a play, for powder, grab a decent brush and away you go. I love M.A.C’s pink powder blush in Swoon and Bobbi Brown’s  Pot Rouge in Calypso Coral.

You want one with staying power but that you can build up gradually when applying. I think it is safer to stay with powder if your skin is uneven and prone to breakouts, however if you don’t wear much of a foundation base and have that lovely even skin then cream away. I love peach and red based for darker skin tones and pink and bronze based colours on fairer skin.

With a huge smile, Sudan’s own Alek Wek modeled pieces from Banana Republic’s new limited edition eco-chic collection, Heritage. The colorful AD campaign surfaced online and in stores just in time for the upcoming festive holiday season.

Needless to say Alek is now the face of HERITAGE. Congrats to Alek for landing such a plum modeling gig!

The 2009 amfAR event helped to raise awareness and over $1.1 million dollars towards HIV/AIDS research with Janet Jackson as the co-host/co-chair.

Alek talked briefly at the auction segment of the event with shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti about how influential Michael Jackson’s fashion style was while growing up in her native country, Sudan.

Alek Wek and Giuseppe Zanotti auctioned off a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti boots designed exclusively by Mr. Zanotti for Michael Jackson to be worn on the opening night of his planned come-back tour. The dazzling hand-embellished boots sold for $14,634. [amfar.org]

During the auction, Sudanese model Alex Wek helped stir interest in the Giuseppe Zanotti-designed boots that featured 3,000 multicolored Swarovski beads, which Jackson planned to wear on the opening night of his comeback.
“Growing up in southern Sudan, I did not know a lot of pop stars. But Michael did touch a lot of people,” she said in tribute to the singer, who died in June before his much-anticipated comeback could begin.[popeater]

amfAR, the foundation for AIDS research, held their first ever charity event in Milan at La Premanente, co-hosted by Janet Jackson. The fashion elite took a break from the shows to support the effort to end the global AIDS epidemic:

Janet Jackson hit the carpet with Donatella Versace, both of course wearing Versace designs. Janet looked amazing in this blue wrap gown, and Donatella rocked a look straight off her S/S 2010 runway.

Burlesque queen, Dita Von Teese, rocked a pink and black satin rouched dress by Dolce & Gabbana. Typical retro look for Dita. She looks fab.

Model Chanel Iman rocked a beautiful black satin and sheer gown by Versace. Absolutely love this look for Chanel, and the hints of sheer seems to be really big for the upcoming season. One of the best dressed for the night.

Iconic Canadian model Linda Evangalista seemed to be unsettled about which fabric of choice to wear. Satin, velvet, fur, oh my! Dare I say it, she pulled this look off! Loving the vintage 40’s finger waves, and the bold red lipstick.

Kanye West & Amber Rose came matching in all black everything. I would have loved to see the two up the ante, because I know they definitely know how to bring it! And it looks like someone has a new piercing:

I am loving this “made for Barbie” shade of lipstick too! She rocks pink lips well, seems to be her fave shade.

DSquared2 designers (and brothers) Dean and Dan Caten came out in matching ensembles. Guess you’re never too old to stop dressing the same as your twin.

Model and socialite Poppy Delevigne rocked an all black Salvatore Ferragamo floor length dress, with plunging neckline lined with satin.

Dean and Dan were everywhere! Apparently, they were getting a DSquared2 leather jacket signed by everybody (Alek Wek, Kanye West, Janet Jackson, etc.) to be auctioned off at the live auction charity segment of the event.

Sudanese supermodel/luxury handbag designer/author ALEK WEK made a fashion forward splash as she made appearances at various events during the 2009 Milan Fashion Week.

Alek is definitely not afraid of rocking vibrant colors in her everyday appearances…as evident by her vibrant blue eye shadow.

She squeezed in time to model runway ready pieces for Miss Bikini Spring/Summer 2010 women collection.

ALEK was also spotted walking down the runway for Zac Posen Spring 2010 collection during NYC Fashion Week. Love that purple and lavender piece!

Newsstand browsers have always been able to open a magazine and see women who look like Alek Wek. Unfortunately, that magazine was National Geographic. It made African-American women who happened to be darker than Beverly Johnson feel that they belonged herding goats on the Serengeti. Fashion magazines never featured ethnic looking models. Women who didn’t look like the standard Western ideal were disenfranchised. Until 1995. That was when Alek Wek was discovered hanging out in a London park with her friends. Designers and photographers fell in love with her strong profile, her amazing long legs and her signature short hairstyle. Overnight, Wek shattered decades of discrimation and narrow minded notions of beauty. Wek showed that not only were African women beautiful, that they weren’t exotic creatures somewhere far, far away, but they belong in fashion, in business, in modern life, and they have a voice in our culture. Wek has been a role model not just because she’s one of the faces of global beauty,  but also through her actions. Wek, herself a onetime refugee of Sudan’s civil war, has used her place in the public eye raise awareness of the ongoing struggles in her country, working to help other refugees and supporting the rights of women in developing countries.

IMAN (one of FG2BH’s best dressed female in 2008) was seen in downtown Manhattan sporting pieces from her fashion label, HSN Global Chic Collection. (Love those comfy ballet flats!) She also supported Fashion’s Night Out – a global event by rocking its classy black and white tee shirt. (She made her age 54 nothing but a number, hasn’t she???)

IMAN was spotted at various Fashion Week events  (no signs of her husband David Bowie) with a chic croc-embossed Gucci clutch…

Arise featured these three beauties during the 2008 Africa Rising event.  It was also a  chance to feature  couture/custom pieces by Nigerian designers: The supermodels (Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek & Liya Kebebe) were best dressed by Nigerian designers, Deola Sagoe, Fati Asibelua of MOMO Couture, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi of LDA. As I browsed through the magazine, I was overcome with glee. As a woman of African descent, I was proud to see that African fashion is booming.

Prompted by his daughter Lola’s question Daddy why don’t I have good hair, Chris Rock produced and wrote the film, GOOD HAIR, to seek out the true definition of black women’s hair within the black community.

Celeb fan favorite to Feels Good 2 B Home and hip-hop video dancer Celestina also made a guest cameo in the film as you can see in the photo below.

When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head! Director Jeff Stilson’s camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture.An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

I’m definitely interested in learning what Chris Rock discovered about relaxer’s chemicals,  what every black girl feel about their hair, where his daughter Lola got the idea of ‘good hair’,  and the price of Indian-made human hair. I honestly laughed at Rev. Al Sharpton’s reply in the trailer.

ALEK WEK decided to let her legs do the talking when she attended the fragrance launch of DOLCE & Gabbana’s “The One.” Last night actress TAMALA JONES wore the longer cut of this satin bustier snug fit dress to the launch party of Jeepney last night in Hollywood. (My thoughts: Tamala should have gotten Alek’s dress length.)

Kenzo Lee Hounsou, newborn son of Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou and Baby Phat founder Kimora Lee Simmons, recently had his first taste of celebrity thanks to Ok! magazine.  Kenzo, the first child for Djimon and third for Kimora, posed for adorable family portraits alongside his sisters Aoki Lee and Ming Lee.

KIMORA ON DJIMON AS A FATHER:

“He’s so hands-on,” Kimora gushes of hubby Djimon as a father. “He holds the baby, and he flicks the doodies. You wouldn’t think a guy would be so hands-on, so supportive, so strong yet gentle.”

KIMORA ON KENZO’S BEHAVIOR:

“He has a very fiery little temper, and we always joke that we’re not sure who that is,” Kimora says of Kenzo. “I am kind of known for being fiery, but Djimon is the ‘calm fiery’ before the storm.”

KIMORA ON WHAT KENZO’S NAME MEANING:

“Kenzo means third and wise [in Japanese],” Kimora explains of her son’s moniker.

Is black beauty a dichotomy of a mish-mash?

It’s pretty clear to me that both concepts of black beauty that I put on this post are two examples of it. Black people are not only beautiful if they are dark or light, we are beautiful because of who we are.

I have never understand the colourism thing to be honest. How can any black person legitimitely say that you prefer light over dark? I admit, back back back when I was younger, I used to think this kind of thinking was okay but I never realised how destructive it was to say that darker skinned men were more ‘attractive’. I was doing it to be more pro-black, but that isn’t pro-black, in fact it is anti-black.

Dark or light, blackness is so beautiful. As Denzel said in the Great Debaters, all those words such as blacken and denigrate hurt us.

Keep it beautiful, don’t discriminate against your fellow brother or sister because of their shade!

I stumbled upon Suede Magazine at CVS in Amherst, Mass a few years ago.  I remembering bringing it back to my girls and we all clamoured over that magazine.  The love shown was evident in its tattered feathered pages and unraveling binding.  No matter how many times I say it, there are not enough positive images for Black women and girls, especially in fashion magazines.  Especially ones that do not traffic in the same tired stereotypes that others have imposed on us.  Worse, we take these up, perpetuate and build on them, then inflict them upon one another tearing each other down (aka cattiness).  Growing up, I remember being subscribed to various magazines for Plus Size women and Women of Color, but none of them lasted.  There was Vibe Vixen, which was a shoot-off from Vibe, but didn’t last and has been rumoured for a re-launch.  Yeah, right.  Vibe Vixen had Tracee Ellis Ross gracing its cover, most famous for being one of Diana Ross’s children, but also for her fantastic role as Joan on Girlfriends!  Girlfriends was on that level with A Different World and Living Single, for those left out of the loop; but, I digress. Honey Magazine has been reduced to an online presence that is not very focused.  Trace Magazine seems to be holding on, still eeking out a print copy.  Granted, their website is poor and not very functional.  However, each issue is available to download!  I was browsing through some other blogs, to see if any of them remembered what I couldn’t and I found from one Brown Sista that she complained many of these magazines started failing because they abandoned their target audience embracing multiculturalism which, apparently, doesn’t appeal to anyone.  Personally, I think she got this all wrong because I understand what she meant to say.  Most (those editors in power) believe multiculturalism is embodied in some sort of racial/ethnic ambiguous look, rather than embracing a variety of looks.  There’s no rule that says we can’t have more than one token minority on a page!  Take a look at the runways when Gisele hit the scene and everyone wanted a Brazilian (even though the country’s numbers of African descendants are higher than ours here).

The stalwarts have kept marching on, Essence, Ebony, and Jet.  However, those are stuck in time and do not speak to the millennial generation, they’re for my Mom (50+) and her friends.  That’s why there was so excitement amongst my friends when I found Clutch, even though it’s only online it’s better than nothing.  Now, living in New York, there are those hoity toity magazines like Uptown and Upscale which seem to be focused towards affluent black males, which is fine, but where is the equivalent for women?

It’s already hard enough for Black women and girls with a healthy sense of identity to look presentable to the world what with all the obstacles when it comes to purchasing products for our hair and skin, and buying suitable clothing.  But to couple that with the images of Beyonce or hideous models like Alek Wek (I don’t care what anyone says, she is NOT attractive, pretty, beautiful, etc – her presence on runways seems like an attempt to exoticize and fetishsize Africa, and satisfy quotas), and music video vixens – Where is a Black girl to go to feel good about herself when she hasn’t been provided that daily affirmation?  Not Vogue, Glamour, Elle, Bazaar or any of those other rags.

I might be getting too emotional because I hate explaining why I want to see beautiful diverse positive Black people in media, and for that matter every other color, too.  So, again, – I ask – Is it too unreasonable to ask for a positive reflection of our sisters, mothers, daughters, cousins, aunties, grandmas, lovers, and friends?  The soundtrack for this post is is Talib Kweli’s song, Black Girl Pain from his album – The Beautiful Struggle.

So, on that abysmal note Vibe Magazine is closing.  It’s not that I ever read Vibe, it’s that I expect to see it on the magazine racks when making my monthly purchases.  I expect to see it the way I expect to see Time in the newsstand.  This is a sin tantamount to the lack of Black comic strips.  And believe me, when I was subscribed to the S.F. Chronicle my last two years of high school I read The Boondocks every morning.  And, don’t even get me started on the numbers of Black fashion designers.  Watching these companies close or fail to exist is like watching my Mom’s bookstore close all over again after ten years.  R.I.P. Shades of Sienna.  It was the only African American children’s bookstore when it opened in 1995.  What? Black people don’t want children’s books? Marcus Books is still holding it down on MLK Blvd in Oakland as the oldest independent Black bookstore in the country.  I hope Marcus still smells like incense when you pass throught its doors.  Again, I digress, I met fantastic people in that little store on Grand Ave during those years:  Walter Dean Myers (SLAM!), Candy Dawson Boyd (Fall Secrets & A Different Beat), Morrie Turner (Wee Pals – comics strip), Robert San Souci (Sukey and the mermaid), and Jerry Pinkney (The Talking Eggs).  Those titles in parentheses are my books that my Mom cajoled the authors into signing.

Now, if I could just turn on some KBLX, The Quiet Storm, while sitting in the chair at Ringlets, maybe – just maybe, all will be right in the world.

We move on to a rather amazing SOTT (Sign Of The Times): news that discount online shop Bluefly will be selling Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and Cartier jewels. (Gasp! Oh, the horror!) However, it is not as if Bluefly shall be carrying new jewelry pieces on the site, nor shall they be regularly offering such upscale goodies as a matter of course. This story in today’s WWD (Women’s Wear Daily, subscription req’d.) explains:

“Bluefly has so far eschewed the private-sale format, but on June 8 will hold its first invitation-only, limited-time sale.”

“Prices are about 20 percent less than new. For example, an estate Cartier Love Bracelet will cost $3,080 rather than $3,850 at regular retail.”

We must confess our appreciation of the Love Bracelet; the Queen Mother still wears hers, acquired way back…well, just way back when.

As noted, these are estate pieces, not brand new items coming directly from the jewelry stores themselves.

The sale is a joint effort with upscale estate jewelry wholesale firm Circa. (Come now, we’ve all noticed their ads in the Times discreetly offering ‘assistance’ in generating a little pocket change by liquidating those silly trinkets collecting dust at the estate. Oh, pshaw, admit it, you know you’ve secretly pondered the possibilities created by letting another generation ummm… experience the beauty of  Great-Grandmama’s pearls. And that monstrosity of a ring left from the wedding-that-wasn’t when that new-money-and-no-taste-man was chasing after Aunt Evangeline, you know the one with the 2.8 carat ruby absolutely laden with those garish diamonds?!
