This is an interesting E-musician TV interview.
As we can see the Cortini’s set up is based mainly on analog stuff and software based enviroments:

• Buchla Modular
• Eurorack Modular
• Jomox Sunsyn and X-base09
• Korg MS20
• Macbet M3x
• Monome
• Native Instruments CORE

The Buchla is his main tool, the euro is the modular for “sperimental sounds” (he keeps the Havestman modules on their own…), while the Sunsyn is his polyphonic beast.
As he described , all the sound are “replicated” (as much as possible) on sw for live use.
The other intersting thing is that he somehow changed  the way NIN approach to live music, becoming more synth based  while before him it was completely sample-based.

Cortini left NIN , and prooduces his music as “Blindoldfreak”.

Основната занимавка на Alessandro е Blindoldfreak. Даже и на живо излиза да свири. Музика, която е по-скоро научен експеримент отколкото изкуство, но все пак притежаваща някакъв чар. Електронна му работа – не го пускайте на бабка си, няма да го оцени.

Както ще видите и на сайта му, където има публикувани клипчета, човека използва доста странна екипировка – супер странно устройство, подобно на синтезатор със десетки копчета, кабели и други подобни израстъци. Казва се Buchla 200e и е създадено от… да, познахте – Don Buchla.

Ето го и сайта на чудака. Има звуци всякакви…

Bueno hamijos, hoy voy a soltar una parrafada de un disco que había escuchado una vez en su momento sin prestarle demasiada atención y que recientemente he vuelto a escuchar y me ha dejado con ganas de más: Ghosts I-IV, de Nine Inch Nails.

Puede parecer cutre, pero echadle un ojo al libreto y cambiaréis de opinión.

Estos Ghosts no son más que piezas intrumentales, publicadas después del lanzamiento de Year Zero, una vez que Trent Reznor había terminado su contrato con Interscope Records. Fueron lanzadas a través del propio Reznor, que con su propio sello, The Null Corporation, las comenzó a distribuir por internet desde su propia página.

Fueron compuestos en su mayoría por el éste, ayudado por Atticus Ross y Alan Moulder, y contaron con las colaboraciones de Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew y Brian Viglione, batería de The Dresden Dolls.

Después de hacer esa broma cutre con su apellido, ¿de verdad pensábais que iba a hacer otra?

El álbum se presenta en forma de treinta y seis cortes sin título, que habitualmente son diferenciados por seguir este formato: (número de canción) Ghosts (número de volumen), como por ejemplo 6 Ghosts I

¿Y qué es esto del volumen? Pues veréis, este álbum está dividido en cuatro volúmenes, ya que en un principio este disco era un experimento, en el que según Reznor:

“The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as… something”.

Lo que viene a ser que se tomaron 10 semanas, sin una fecha determinada y escribieron todo guiados por el impulso, sin pensar demasiado y que todo eso sería publicado de alguna manera.

Y desde luego me parece que han sabido sacar un sonido que en ciertos momentos me recuerda al de The Fragile, aunque pasado por todos esos filtros electrónicos que tanto se usaron en [With_Teeth] y Year Zero, los dos anteriores álbumes, además de usar un rango mucho más amplio de instrumentos: piano, guitarras, bajo, sintetizadores, marimba, banjo, pandereta y xilófonos, siendo muchos de éstos tratados y distorsionados digitalmente. Además, los intrumentos de percusión, que fueron aportados por Biglione, el cual creó una batería casera.

En otro orden de cosas, el trabajo artístico de este disco es impecable; Rob Sheridan es un hombre al que admiro y no lo oculto, pero aquí me parece que se ha lucido con el artwork; una vez compras el disco, pongamos, la versión estándar de dos CD’s desde la página de Nine Inch Nails tienes acceso a la descarga inmediata del álbum en múltiples formatos de audio, pues bien, cada canción vendrá con una imagen diferente en sustitución a la portada, aparte de poder decargar un archivo .pdf con todas estas ilustraciones, que en total suman cuarenta páginas si no me equivoco; esto es algo que posteriormente se ha hecho en el The Slip y causa un efecto muy satisfactorio, ver que se ha trabajado tanto el continente como el contenido, un verdadero incentivo para comprar el producto.

Después de este repaso a los aspectos más fundamentales sólo me queda recomendaros que lo escuchéis, y compartid vuestras opiniones aquí, por ejemplo.

The LIGHTS IN THE SKY era has come to a close, and I’d like to once again thank you for your support. I am very proud of what we pulled off – it was an immense amount of work and worth it all.
I’d like to thank Josh and Alessandro for being an integral part of this for the last few years and I wish them all the best.

No rest for the wicked here, though. We start rehearsing the new band/format first thing next year and as I mentioned, we’ll be announcing some final waves of dates. North America, UK/Europe, Pacific Rim and elsewhere.
