I used to love watching Popworld on Channel 4 at the weekends. Alexa Chung’s style plus Alex Zane’s sense of humour was, in my eyes, a perfect combination. Alas, the series ended in 2007 , but Alexa’s style continues to inspire me.

Alexa and Alex back in the Popworld days

Chung epitomises British style, regularly donning Luella dresses (she is a huge Luella fan who has recently been urging her followers on Twitter to “Save Luella” after hearing the news of the designer’s recent financial crisis) and Burberry trenches and carrying Mulberry bags. Her outfits are always wonderful and she pulls them off effortlessly. She knows what suits her and sticks to it. Also, she knows how to pull off a perfect balance of designer, high street and vintage in her outfits. I love that.

Life isn’t fair. Alexa has it all: lovely clothes, tiny legs and a gorgeous boyfriend.

In a change to the advertised schedule, today’s post is going to be music-related as I’m

In a change to the advertised schedule, today’s post is going to be music-related as I’m joining the debate on the album of the noughties. Following the success of the sportsman of the decade blogs (Tom Victor’s post links out to all of them), we at CJS are now going to pour forth on the greatest contributions to the world music scene in the last 10 years… Follow the debate by using this Twitter hashtag: #albumofthedecade, and vote on it here.

Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not

The album's mildly controversial artwork

“Anticipation has the habit to set you up / For disappointment…” Has an album ever had a more portentous opening line? Its bathos and casual self-deprecation show that Alex Turner and the gang knew they were under pressure to perform when they finally brought an LP to the table, but there is an arrogance to it too: they knew they’d just made the best album of the decade, and they wanted to have a bit of a laugh about it.

When Arctic Monkeys released their debut on Monday January 23, 2006, the atmosphere was incendiary. They had been catapulted into the limelight since giving away free CDs at their early gigs which had then hit the internet at the tail end of 2004.

Fascination was rife with Alex’s grotty evocation of life as a young man in Sheffield: the grimy bars of Rotherham in ‘Fake Tales of San Francisco’ are delightfully juxtaposed with the romance of New York, and the multivalent “lines” of the performers effortlessly debase the trendy image of musicians taking cocaine.

It all started, really, with ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’. When it was released as a single in October 2005 and shot straight to the top of the charts the band became more than an internet phenomenon; they became a national obsession. Young people could identify with their tales of boozy nights out and minor run-ins with bouncers (as in ‘From the Ritz to the Rubble’, about the legendary – and now defunct – Sheffield nightclub Kingdom).

The perspective of the lyricist is disconnected from his position; Turner is a young man about town but he shuns the boorish behaviour of those he sees “squaring up proper shouting” in ‘Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured’. He chooses here to laugh at it but later, in closing track ‘A Certain Romance’, he adopts a weary acceptance: “They’ll never listen / Because their minds are made up”.

Arctic Monkeys on stage at Old Trafford County Cricket Ground, July 28, 2007

The realism of the album allied with Turner’s vernacular was perhaps what most piqued the public’s consciousness; “int”s and “summat”s pepper the album, but obviously ‘Mardy Bum’ made the most of this. That track in particular shows how well they can do pathos as well as humour; the words resonate with that poignant desperation of a man at the end of his tether in his relationship.

Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not has everything. It draws on popular culture in much the same way as The Libertines did in their references to classic British comedies; the lines from ‘You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me’ which refer to Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (“So tense, never tenser / Could all go a bit Frank Spencer”) are not so esoteric as Doherty and Barat but are brilliantly humorous.

‘When The Sun Goes Down’ – which was probably even better in its original incarnation as ‘Scummy’ – is probably the most widely-known song from the album, and it still has revellers (particularly in Sheffield’s indie clubs, such as The Leadmill) bawling along in unison. The snarling, grungey portrait of backstreet Sheffield cemented Turner’s position as one of the great social commentators of British music.

There are no weak spots, lyrically or musically, on this award-winning album. Even Gordon Brown, when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, tried to jump on the relentless bandwagon of Arctic Monkeys love, though later had to admit he couldn’t name a single song from them.

Since then, it’s all gone a bit Frank Spencer for him…

Based upon the self-promoted achievements of L. Ron Hubbard, the pageant explores one man’s search for the answers to life’s most important questions and his creation of the religion Scientology.

That children enact this story is the stroke of genius that A Red Orchid Theatre can pat itself on the back over for years to come. The pageant has quickly morphed into Chicago’s brand new holiday favorite–what with Next Theatre opening its production in two weeks. Will Chicago survive dueling Scientology pageants? Will these theaters survive an onslaught from Scientology’s lawyers? Is this a sign of the Apocalypse?

I hardly know which is scarier–Scientology, the story of the creation of Scientology, or the amount of talent these kids possess. Director Steve Wilson has one tight group of young actors at his disposal. They rock the house with angelic paeans to L. Ron Hubbard, slow-motion battle scenes, hilarious E-meter demonstrations, and fabulous portrayal of the sinister galactic overlord, Xenu. One actor even looks like a pre-teen Tom Cruise—now that’s scary.

In a classic moment of paranoia, I considered whether this satire could actually be a vehicle promoting Scientology. For L. Ron, all paths for spiritual growth sooner or later lead to Hawaii. And why not? All the same, other than blasting away your engrams or your Thetans, Scientology still doesn’t have answers for who we are or what life’s purpose is all about. But in the midst of the joy of the Scientology pageant, we really don’t care.

Voto: 6,3

I bought the tickets for Arctic Monkeys’ concert in Sheffield three days after I arrived in the city.

It was September the 22nd, one month and three weeks before the actual gig, and I was with an Italian friend of mine in a Spanish restaurant in Meadowhall. We were both newly settled and felt we should have done something more properly local than eating ethnic stuff in a mall; so we decided to blow our budget and buy the tickets, even though the gig was sold out already and it would have cost a lot. But after all: Arctic Monkeys from Sheffield in Sheffield, how cool was that? Coming from Italy, we both had never even heard of the city before they came on the scene. Excitement mounted up day after day: my friend was a long-term fan, I used to think they were incredibly overrated but I had really loved the new album.

By the day of the concert, tension had reached its climax. It was all about looking as much of a Sheffielder as possible for the event and trying to get to the Arena on time for being in the first row. After the disillusionment of finding out that in Sheffield too there are Starbucks, H&M and all those hideous chains that simply replicate themselves over and over making any city identical to any other on a random parallel, Arctic Monkeys playing in Sheffield looked as unique as the Parthenon.

Now, before talking about the concert, I do feel the responsibility of making a preface: on that very same day some scum stole my laptop by breaking the window of my room and helping himself while I was in the kitchen preparing lunch. They immediately arrested him but not before he could get rid of my adored pc; police told me they might call again at night in case they had news, so I spent the entire concert holding the camera in one hand and my mobile in the other, begging for a phone call.

Arctic Monkeys really helped, too. As I said before, I am a converted fan, and that made me the most enthusiastic supporter of the kids. But the concert was just….

There has been a shift in the sound of The Arctic Monkeys new LP Humbug. The album is more stripped

There has been a shift in the sound of The Arctic Monkeys new LP Humbug. The album is more stripped back and melodic than the two previous releases. This is an unexpected step as Josh Homme is the producer and fans were probably bracing for the most intense work to date. Unfortunately the new mood has seen quite a lackluster and self serving set of meandering tracks. “Cornerstone” however stands clearly above the rest and is a good choice to release as the first single.

Alex Turner is a fluid wordsmith and on “Cornerstone” he is at his vibrant and poetic best. This is a tale of lost love, or so it seems; and the grieving process that endures long after unrequited love interests have departed. It seems the solution is to seek like minded individuals and consol each other with a good snog.

Click here to watch the video "Cornerstone"

The organ is utilized to maximum effect in portraying the emotion of the reminiscent and sorrowful tale. Turner has matured greatly here as a vocalist and his wordplay is somewhat tempered and hence economical, sharper and enhancing the overall track.

Bands all go through a transition attempting to keep things fresh. Sometimes they work and the group is highly regarded for their adaptive ability and longevity is their reward. Some never live up to past glories and sometimes good things take time. What will it be for The Arctic Monkeys?

I’m sure you guys are already pretty sick of my constant gushing about Clockenflap. But what transpired on the open lawns of Cyberport this past weekend was something extraordinary, something amazing. I saw the people of Hong Kong, who we normally typecast as cynical, austere conservatives, get up on their feet and dance and howl and scream. I saw a crowd full of people transformed. I saw the awesome power of music in action — and, despite its many bells and whistles, Clockenflap is just that: a music festival. I was only there for the first day, but that was more than enough to leave a lasting impression. (Added bonus: bumping into Rudy for some crazy good conversation!)

When we first arrived on the scene, I was pretty skeptical: it was like every single hipster in Hong Kong had congregated in one place. We were greeted by a sea of thick-framed plastic glasses, men with Cavour-level facial hair, and people drinking fine wine out of plastic cups. Nowhere else in HK would you be able to see such a pretentious gathering — but Clockenflap made it happen. I was disappointed to see that most people were merely chilling on the grass engaged in chit-chat about god knows what. Local bands were playing, but failed to rile the crowd for the rest of the lazy afternoon. The only people up and dancing (albeit awkwardly) were a mojito-guzzling bald man with a somewhat creepy resemblance to Mr. Marcus and a woman wearing a skirt with a person’s face printed on it.

Like fine wine, however, the day got better as time passed. The first group to get people standing up was homegrown art rock band Chochukmo, blessed with a frontman who could actually sing. I don’t know why, but the way he inflects his voice reminds me a little bit of a Canto Alex Turner (singer for the Arctic Monkeys). Infectiously catchy backbeats met playful driving rhythms, and the long-haired rockers soon drew in a minor crowd. They’ll be playing at Grappa’s Cellar on the 28th to promote their new album… do check them out.

“Love is Dead” by Pet Conspiracy

Next in the lineup were Beijing electro rockers Pet Conspiracy in what was probably one of the best live performances I’ve seen. Their creed? “Real dance music should draw blood.” Despite having never heard their music before, we were all instantly hooked by the band’s unique sound, raw energy, and crazy stage antics. The entire performance was intoxicating, orgiastic, mind-blowing. Every riff or chord — hellfire. The lead singer was literally wrapping the mic around her own body in a stroke of hot S&M bondage-type shit. By the end of it, she was dripping wet in cheap beer, glorious sideboob exposed to the world. The lyrics were just as explicit; notable lines included “I’ll give my pink to you” and “Don’t you move / Stay inside me”. To the delight of the frenzied crowd, the onstage outrageousness finally culminated in a make-out between the two male members of the band (right after Audrey commented on how hot the drummer was)… definitely an act worth listening to.

But where Pet Conspiracy was the unexpected surprise, Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor was the unexpected disappointment. His DJ set wasn’t even fully finished. After half an hour, he stopped trying and just played random music (including 50 Cent, LOL) without even attempting to mix them. No matter, though — we found a new source of entertainment: mockingly singing the opening lyrics to Ready for the Floor (DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT NOW) over any and every song that played.

Death to Los Campesinos! by Los Campesinos! (download)

Finally, the main event of the night — Los Campesinos! were up next. This was a special first for me… never before had I seen a band I genuinely liked in concert. Now I could actually sing along with the lyrics (though I was severely outclassed by some local who must be the Campesinos’ biggest diehard fan in Hong Kong — he was getting a little bit too into it, and knew every single song, to boot!) The performance was awesome as expected, albeit dangerous. People nearby were crowdsurfing and bumping into one another. A guy behind us, clearly drunk as shit, was jumping around and flailing about with a bottle of wine in one hand. They had to call out the big guys to restrain the crowd. I thought that only happened in movies. At one point, frontman Gareth Campesinos even called a guy in the crowd a “dickhead”, LOL. After that, it was all smooth sailing and good music. Personal favorite? Knee Deep at ATP. In unrelated news, “Campesinos” no longer looks like a word to me.

But yeah — long story short, if good music should draw blood, I for one had a bloody good time. Oh, and a photo with Tom Campesinos… BRAGGING RIGHTS, BETCHES! I’ll definitely be the first to get my hands on Clockenflap tickets next year. Hope to see more HKIS-ers then! From here on out, the festival can only get bigger and better. Sadly, I wasn’t able to go on the second day due to HiMCM, but the others tell me that Yacht was wicked fun as well. To compensate, I’ll finish off this post with a relevant track. Enjoy:

I’ve noticed a new trend in music vid production lately, the super minimal video. Whether its because the obsolete cash strapped labels are cutting costs by slashing promo budgets or artists are tipping their caps to the age of information overload there are a lot of videos dropping that feature establishes and emerging artists in productions with deceptively simple conceits. Above is the latest from Jarvis Cocker, the original purveyor of geek-chic and front man of Britpop legends Pulp, getting squished up for his latest single ‘Further Complications’.

Here’s the Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner crooing to the camera with the Humbug ballad ‘Cornerstone’:

The trend isn’t confined to just visually minimal vids. Here’s Clipse’s ‘I’m Good’. Notice the whole video is shot handheld, tight frames, and all available light:

E con questo mi ha conquistata completamente. Divento scema per le produzioni lo-fi come questa e, come se non bastasse, al sapore super-vintage dei 70ies: cos’altro vuoi dalla vita?! Mi sono trattenuta dal parlare del nuovo album degli Arctic Monkeys, Hambug, per molto tempo; un po’ perché non me li sono mai cagati molto, un po’ perché ne hanno parlato tutti e perché temevo che nel tempo mi avrebbe stufata. Invece, ascoltandolo senza abusarne, continua a piacermi, parecchio. Nonché il dilemma di sempre: What came first: the chickens or the dickheads? I dickheads, ovviamente.

Amid all the Treasure Island updates is this hilarious video of the Arctic Monkey’s newest sin

Amid all the Treasure Island updates is this hilarious video of the Arctic Monkey’s newest single, “Cornernstone.” While I stand by my original opinion that the track was an odd addition to the band’s latest release, the dark “Humbug,” “Cornerstone” is definitely growing on me.

This video is one of the reasons why. For a good three minutes, I couldn’t help but laughing as a usually calm, collected and commanding Alex Turner strutted his stuff in front of a white screen, kicking the bad-ass demeanor for a red sweatshirt and lip-syncing charades that often land YouTube amateurs millions of hits. Maybe Turner’s embracing his growing star status, but by showing his sense of humor (ironically in a twisted song about how he’s trying to find women to call by his ex-lover’s name, and finally finding a taker in his ex’s sister) he’s losing the perceived aloofness and rough edges that characterized his early years with the Arctic Monkeys.

And while I probably could have made the same video with a home camera, there’s not much chance I could do it with Turner’s sheer cheekiness. Maybe I’ll give it a try though. Check this blog for updates.

“Cornerstone” will be released online on Nov. 17 as a single with b-sides Catapult, Sketchead and Fright Lined Dining Room.

stepping away from the angular riffs of “crying lightning”, the monkeys’ latest video for “cornerstone” seems a lighthearted affair, and i mean that literally. alex turner is given a single shot in which to croon the song, rock a ribbed sweater- it is autumn, stand around awkwardly during the guitar solo, and reenact a few choice verses, all the while singing about doing your sister.

eles já avisaram antes: don’t believe the hype.

alex turner subiu dez pontos no meu conceito. auto-ironia ruleia.

September 29th I went to the Arctic Monkeys concert at the Kool Haus. It was amazing, the best concert I have been to. I have fallen in love with the band all over again, seeing people live often does that to me. Though I have to admit that I was a bit unsure about their new album ‘Humbug’ at first since it’s so different from their old stuff. My mind has changed (before I even went to the concert). I love their new album. Even though its a bit heavy and dark, it’s oddly refreshing.

Okay, so I’m just going to say it and stop pretending now. I slightly obsessed with them. It’s all I listen to and it makes me happy : ). And I hate to admit it, but I have a bit (well, maybe slightly more than a ‘bit’) of a fangirl crush on Alex Turner. He’s just so British and cool and awesome. The whole band is cool and awesome! Ack! I just love them : )

Bah. My camera sucks at taking pictures at concerts what with the less than favourable light conditions : (
