Tyler decides to make his own documentary about a horror film, The Hills Run Red. It was shown 20 years ago and was quickly buried. Nobody knows where the actors are and nobody can find the film. Tyler and his friends manage to find the daughter of the director and enlist her help to uncover the film.

Directed by – Dave Parker

Written by – John Carchietta, John Dombrow, David J. Schow

Starring – William Sadler, Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrink, Janet Montgomery, Mike Straub, Alex Wyndham, Ewan Bailey, Raicho Vasilev, Itai Diakov, Hristo Mitzkov, Danko Jordanov

Sadness filled my heart when I didn’t get to see Surrogates or Pandorum on the weekend so I decided to fill it with the blood of The Hills Run Red. I have been reading about this one lately and it sounded interesting. It turned out to be a pretty good movie even with some flaws.

It starts out simply enough. Tyler is trying to find this film, The Hills Run Red, which nobody seems to have anymore. He decides that he’ll make a documentary of his journey to find it when he manages to find where the directors daughter is living. Once he convinces her to come with him and his friends (alright, he convinces her by kidnapping her and detoxing her!) they set off into the woods (where else do scary movies happen) to find her fathers home where she says he kept all his film.

Teens in the woods, we all know how this ends!

At first, the movie isn’t too violent. We get some quick flashback scenes showing a bit of gore but it’s all too quick to really enjoy in the context of a horror movie. By the time the last 30 mins comes around, the movie is basically bathing in blood. People getting torn apart, corpses hanging everywhere and random slasher type slayings begin. While the violence is a welcome addition to the flick, the story starts to get really wacky as well. Almost to the point of pure stupidity. What started out so simply starts to get a little weird when twist after twist is thrown at you.

Of course, this is a gory film and plot isn’t usually a major step in a horror flick like this one. There’s some very important ingredients that makes a horror film I’ll enjoy. 1. A great villain. He’s gotta be creepy, he’s gotta look cool and he’s usually unstoppable. 2. Plenty of gore. It doesn’t have to be excessive but it’s got to have some great kills. And finally 3. Characters that I don’t want to strangle myself. Sure, there’s gonna be some annoying ones in there, there always is, but don’t make them so annoying that I wanna kill them myself.

The killer of the flick, Babyface. The mask is pure creep!

The villain of the flick is Babyface. Reminded me alot of Jason but smarter, less unstoppable and way more creepy. There’s even a moment towards the end of the flick that really made me enjoy his performance and, to me, made him even more creepy than he had been. I won’t ruin it for you and it may not make you feel the same way but I was loving it.

So the film succeeds at getting my blood flowing but the storyline fails miserably. Lucky for you The Hills Run Red, that I wasn’t here for the thought provoking plot. Basically the last 20 mins runs like this. Great kill followed by completely stupid plot twist which is quickly followed by a great kill to make you forget about the stupid plot twist. Now repeat that about 3 or 4 times and you’ve got the end of this movie. If you’re coming into this one looking for a great story than you probably shouldn’t be watching a horror film. If you’re looking for some great gore and an interesting killer then come to the hills.

Under the marquee – Will

The Line of Beauty, 2006, Storbritannien
