Last night was elimination night for 4 unlucky contestants.

Ryan made fun of Simon’s moose head thing!

I liked the first group song. I think it showcased some solo talent really well. David Archuleta is so good! Kristy Lee Cook sounded great on it too. Carly did well. Chikezie wasn’t very good.First to go was none other than Jason Yeager. Poor guy. It was time. Danny Noriega looked stupified when the announcement was made. Jason said that he tried to mentally prepare for elimination this week based on the judges’ criticism. Simon was still mean to him after the elimination. He did say he’s not a bad singer though.

Next eliminated was another pick of mine, Alexandrea Lushington. The back row of girl stood up (Asia’h is SHORT). Kristy Lee is safe, Asia’h is safe, Brooke is safe. It’s down to Amanda and Alexandrea. I think Alexandrea knew it was her at this point. She had a tough time taking it in. She performed her song again and David Archuleta started crying some pretty serious tears.

Next elimination was a shock to me. Alaina Whitaker and Kady Malloy were called down together. One was in bottom three girls, one got the lowest number of votes. Alaina is out. Ramiele looked shocked. Poor Alaina was crying and said “I can’t sing.” Ryan hugged her. Aww. Ryan really is a nice guy I think. Paula stood to clap for her. Danny was crying. Alaina did a good job of overcoming her emotions to put on a pretty good performance.

Front row of guys stood up, Robbie and Luke were called to the center. Robbie is eliminated. He pins it on song choice. Simon said it “never, ever felt real.” Robbie Carrico sings us out.

Prenatal Vitamins – out -

Alaina Whittaker? Seriously? Are we seriously having to have this conversation right now? While Kady Malloy is having an identity crisis and Luke Menard shouldn’t even being using David Archuleta’s oxygen? I couldn’t believe it when they eliminated her on last night’s show.

I get the point that Alaina probably wasn’t going to win the whole thing…and none of the folks who got voted off last night had a legitimate shot and really being OUR American Idol in the end. It wasn’t quite the caliber as Chris Daughtry’s send-off was, of course. But still.

I was about ready to boycott the show when my little peanut Josiah got booted, but last night, The SM was about to burn down News Corp and 19 Entertainment and slash Simon’s tires with a rusty chainsaw he was so frustrated and the infathomable taste of America. Jason Yeager, Alexandrea Lushington…Robbie Carrico…OK, I get it. But three girls, easily, performed worse than Alaina the night before. I guess I should be happy my favorites are still in the mix though.

What was your take on last night?

Then they were 16. American Idol whittles its numbers down when it sends four more home in the second results show of the semifinals after 31 million votes.

Ryan’s delivery of the first elimination from the Top 20 is more suspenseful than last week and a bit kinder than the “can I talk to you, oh yeah you are out of here” speech that he gave Garrett Haley right off the bat.

Up first on the chopping block – Jason Yeager. This decision is no surprise as Jason has not been able to find a song that, as Simon says, makes him stand out. Jason was the only one of my picks to hit the road tonight.

Next up – Alexandrea Lushington. I like Alex, she has potential. But her performance Wednesday night was so forgettable I can’t even remember what she did. I’m not surprised that she is going home. I will give the girl credit. For only being 17, she was incredible composed when she heard the news and sang her swan song.

Alaina Whitaker didn’t take the news that America wasn’t “hopelessly devoted” to her as well. With a little moral support from the rest of the girls, she finally did sing and didn’t sound so bad considering how much she was crying. Anyone else think her family looked like they were going to eat Ryan alive?

And last to depart was Robbie Carrico – the would-be rocker that Simon says isn’t authentic. I was actually surprised by this selection. I didn’t think Robbie would make the Top 12, but I thought he’d be around for another week. I wonder if America doesn’t like his rocker sound or if they just agree with Simon that he’s not the real thing.

Ryan also left us with a few Idol announcements. March 11 will be the first time the Top 12 performs. They will be treated to a new stage, background, graphics and exit song. And the theme will be the recently released Lennon/McCartney songs. April 9 is the next Idol Gives Back night and slated for participation is Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dog, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood.

What do you think? Did the right four get sent home?

Here are my predictions for the Top 12.

…but the WRONG two gals left tonight and that’s a shame. Jason & Robbie deserved “das boot” but Alexandrea either picked the wrong song or over thought her initial performance (tonight’s was WAAAYYY better) while Alaina probably suffered from the “too many long haired blonds syndrome” and got lost in the shuffle. I give also give the 16 year old major props for pushing through and singing her final song (and it was great to see the gals stand behind her literally, singing every note with her). What a shame – Amanda or Kady would have been a better choice given their poor performances but they might have bigger fan bases than I thought – that and the fact that the idiots at VFTW have backed Amanda in their campaign to keep deserving talent from actually doing well on this show. Some folks have too much time on their hands…

So, I’m 5 for 8 and we’re on our way to the last week of the semi-finals. Let’s hope they all bring their “A” games next week and give us a great show!

Carry on!

PS – and it’s ABOUT time the Beatles catalog get’s the IDOL treatment. Just don’t screw it up…

Sorry for the typo on the title–very embarrassing. You’re supposed to hide typos within

Sorry for the typo on the title–very embarrassing. You’re supposed to hide typos within the body of the text so no one notices them. Thanks to my mom for pointing out my glaring error.

I know I said I wasn’t going to watch “American Idol” after the unjust treatment of Josiah Leming and Kyle Ensley. But since Josiah was on “The Ellen Show” and got hooked up a ton of recording equipment (watch clip of Josiah on “Ellen”) , I’ve issued a reprieve. Actually, my best friend watches “Idol” so if I want to spend the evening chilling in the living room with her and the pets, I’ve got to watch “Idol”, too. Fortunately, tonight was the elimination show and I love to see people get sent home in the early stages.

This is what I don’t get about the “Idol” elimination shows–why do they have the contestants sing the song that caused him or her to be cast off Idol Island? I know the final song is the contestant’s chance to perform one last time on the show, but shouldn’t they have a back-up? Or maybe choose a song that was performed well? No, the last time we hear a contestant, we hear the song that was mediocre at best and that’s what we remember. Does anyone else see a problem with that? If it wasn’t that great the first time, it’s not going to be much better when the contestant’s trying to hold back tears.

First to be eliminated was 17 year-old Alexandrea Lushington, who did a rendition of “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago. Her performance wasn’t spot-on, but what does a 17 year-old teen know about 70’s music anyway? Most don’t. Randy told Alexandrea that it was the wrong song for her, but I disagree. Choosing a classic Chicago song is never wrong. Plus, she is one of the best dressers in the whole lot of gals and pretty darn talented.

The next girl on the chopping block was Alaina Whitaker, a rather cute 16 year-old who performed “Hopelessy Devoted to You” from Grease. She was adorable, even though Simon thought she was dressed matronly. She got axed, yet Kady Malloy was allowed to stay. The girls are practically twins, but I don’t like Kady. Whenever she’s on-screen, I yelled, “Get over yourself!” Her “confidence” comes across as snottiness, and alienates me (and Sarah and my dogs).

Kady’s not the only girl that needs to go. Amanda Overmeyer, the husky-voiced Harley-riding nurse, isn’t one of my favorites. I want to like her because is so interesting, but I just can’t get into her. Her voice makes me want to wretch, and her hair (especially when she performed on Wednesday) reminded me of Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid. I could be mistaken, but “American Idol” contestants shouldn’t conjure up images of Disney villains. Asia’h irks me. It’s an unfounded irk. But I think the outfit she wore Wednesday was a throw-back from one of Paula Abdul’s early 90’s videos. I didn’t know if she was going to sing or on her way to her hectic job at the office.

First to go was Jason Yeager. I have no idea what he sang. All I could focus on was the random blond streak on the front of his head. I ponder why on earth someone would choose to put one little blond spot in his hair, and if it was naturally occuring, why he didn’t dye it to match the rest of his hair. It’s probably there to make him look “cool”. I had a Ken doll with a random blond spot on his hair because that was the look in 1990 when New Kids on the Block ruled my heart. Definitely a dated look. I felt bad about being so offended by his hair when I saw that his favorite “quote” is “Jeremiah 29:11″ on the “American Idol”. Then there was Robby, who massacred the song “Hot Blooded”. He was dressed in a skull shirt with a skull handkerchief on his head–I wandered if the rest of his pirate crew was going to show up and lay siege to the “American Idol” stage.

Before you think I’m an overly critical whiner (which I probably am), there are two contestants who I feel are amazing–Brooke White and David Achulela. Brooke has an ethereal quality of sunshine and light. Watching her sing just warms the cockles of my heart. The same is true with David. He’s a cute kid–and what a set of pipes for a 16 year-old. Despite what Simon, Paula, and Randy say, I think these these are the two to beat.

But what do I know? I wanted Sanjaya to win. Just kidding.

The outfits weren’t as crazy as I might have expected (or hoped).

First up was Carly Smithson.

Her mini bio was about working at an Irish bar close to her home. She sang “Crazy on You.” It was a great performance. She looked wonderful and her song and performance were right on target. I really like her once I get past her record deal past. Her tattoos were in full view last night. Well, at least the ones that are safe for TV viewing. J

Syesha Mercado was next.

We saw a clip of her playing a mother on a commercial. She’s good! Maybe she’ll have some talent scouts after her if she gets booted soon. She sang “Me and Mr. Jones.” It was a good performance. I wish she’d belted it out a little more. She did really well with the higher, louder notes and then immediately lost her charm when she fell into her low register.

Brooke White is a beauty school drop-out.

She quit beauty school to pursue music. She could not have chosen a better song. She sang “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon. It was great! She played her guitar at the beginning, but it seemed a nuisance at the end. Simon loved it. He said that she sang well and it connected.

“Lullaby Malubay” ha!

I guess now we know how to pronounce her last name – it rhymes with lullaby. I don’t quite get her appeal. My mom loves her. She hasn’t blown me away since her initial audition, but I did love that audition. She can hula dance. She sang “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” Randy said it was “just really ok.” I think it comes down to a bad song choice on her part.

Girl-next-door Kristy Lee Cook was quite shiny last night.

Her outfit must’ve been made from satin or something. She is a tomboy. Well, we knew that already. “You’re No Good” was her song. She sings well, she’s just very green. She needs some experience. She never really got into her performance. I think she’s scared of really getting into it. It was good. She has a lot of potential.

Cruella DeVille, I mean Amanda Overmyer was number 6 out of the gate last night.

She kinda went overboard with that hair. She’s the bookworm. Nice quirk to have. She was rocking out last night with the hair, the pants, the song “Carry On My Wayward Son.” It wasn’t bad. The judges did not like it.

Youngster Alaina Whitaker sang the classic “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

She doesn’t like it when her food touches. She is a very natural singer. It wasn’t forced. It was very good. I really like her.

Oh ouch. Alexandrea Lushington was next.

Let’s start with that outfit of her. Eww. That’s a definite don’t. Boys’ cargo pants, a t-shirt with a zip-up hoodie, and bootie heels. Yuck. Anywho, the song wasn’t any better. She sang “If You Leave Me Now.” Look’s like she’ll be leaving us now. Her only comment after she sang “well, it’s over.”

What’s the deal with Simon holding his hand straight out from his head? He looks like an elk or moose or something. Stupid.

Coming in at number 9 is Kady Malloy, my fellow Texan.

She sings opera in her bathroom. I think she could sing opera just fine on stage too. She sang. “Magic Man.” It was not her best performance. I liked her outfit. I think she’s very talented and should stick around for a while.

We did not save the best for last on girls’ night. Asia’h (superfluous ‘h) Epperson the cheerleader sang “All By Myself.”

How did the judges like this? She totally missed a note, like it didn’t even come out. She is not an experienced enough singer for this song. It was really bad on the low notes. The extensions don’t do her any favors either. David Hernandez looked like he was in pain as he listened to her sing.

Going home tonight: Alexandrea Lushington and Asia’h Epperson

(NOTE: This is a copy of the email I sent to my friend who got me into watching this trash.)

Ok. Tonight’s group singalong may be the single worst musical atrocity ever aired on broadcast television. It makes the Star Wars Holiday Special look like the first Lollapoluzza.

I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU

Why the hell did you have to make me watch this crap? I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU

But its good that I bring up Star Wars, because in what I will have nightmares about this evening, Jason Castro and Sanjaya 2.0 were on stage singing next to one another. Christ, this image is burned into my brain’s frontal cortex or something. But it then dawned on me that Jason Castro is the spitting image of a Gelfling from The Dark Crystal.

I am so glad I no longer have to see Jason Yeager every effing week. He creeped me the eff out.

Me: 1 for 1
You: 1 for 1

Oh, your little Kristy receives a stay of execution. Yes, Paula, its the beginning of the career being cut from the show. You can end up on Celebrity Rehab! I liked Alexandrea, but oh well, I’ll forget who the hell she is by 5pm tomorrow. You just can’t attempt the “ooooh ooh ooohhs.”

Me: 2 for 2
You: 2 for 2

(Btw, I think Carly is growing on me and I really want to hear Amanda do Melissa Etheridge.)

Oh, please, please, please let it be Alaina. Please, please, please. I love my sweet little Kady, although she looks like ass tonight. She has a better rack, too.

YES! YES! YES! Her ass looks huge, too, but props for saying she can’t sing. The last goddamn thing I would want to do after being booted in front of 20+ million people is sing. But her ass still looks huge. Oh shit, Paula’s gonna lose it. Can you imagine getting drunk with Paula? She’s a total drunk crier. OH SHIT. Sanjaya 2.0 is crying. LOVE IT. Oh wait, please no more group sing. I love fast forward. Whatever, she went for it, and Paula is standing without one hand on the table. Jesus christ, I hate this song. I’m only not fast forwarding b/c I like seeing Sanjaya 2.0 cry.

This show makes me a sadist.

Me: 3 for 3
You: 2 for 3

WOW. Robbie is gone. Neither you nor I called this one. Should we be sad? Nah, we’ll forget about him by next week, right? But people should really appreciate Foreigner’s contribution to pop rock of the late 70s-early 80s. Loverboy is just a cheap knockoff.

I win this week. You owe me drinks. BUT I STILL HATE YOU.

Last week the women on American Idol suffered from illness, but for ‘70s week they were plagued with

Last week the women on American Idol suffered from illness, but for ‘70s week they were plagued with bad song choices.

It’s Week 2 of the semifinals and the Top 10 women seemed a little star struck. Several of them picked songs because they loved the song or the band instead of finding the perfect match for them. Others just couldn’t find the right fit to make them stand out.

I almost feel like I could sum up all the performances with the same phrase – nice, but forgettable. And in one word, I’d summarize ‘70s night for the women as boring. Even their “little known facts” were dull.

Top Picks and Most Improved

Since all the ladies seemed to struggle a little this week, I had trouble pulling out my pick of the litter.

Topping my list has to be self-professed tomboy Kristy Lee Cook mostly because her rendition of Linda Ronstadt’s hit was such a huge improvement over last week.

This week’s Kristy Lee looked relaxed. She performed “You’re No Good” with attitude. But like Simon, I was surprised she hasn’t gone with a more country flavor.

Likewise, I liked Carly Smithson’s “Crazy on You” better than her performance from last week; maybe it was because she loves Heart and is passionate about the song. However, there’s something about her voice that I just don’t care for. She’s going to have to do something really outstanding to win me over.

Almost Diva Like

Former cheerleader Asia’h Epperson tried to fill big shoes tonight when she took on “All By Myself.” The song was first sung in 1975 by Eric Carmen, but has been made famous most recently by diva Celine Dion. If I could rate Asia’h on just the last part of the song, she’d have topped my list this week, but she had some problems with the middle of the song.

Bonus points in the diva category go to Asia’h for totally changing her appearance tonight. I almost didn’t recognize her.

Best Song Match

For weeks, I’ve been trying to decide who Brooke White reminds me of. Tonight, her song choice and her decision to perform it with a guitar made her similarity to Carly Simon clear to me. Unfortunately for me, I can’t stand the song “You’re So Vain.”

I thought Brooke nailed the beginning of the song, but I think she lost her control during the chorus.

Nice, But Nothing Special

It didn’t help Syesha Mercado’s case tonight that I’ve never heard Billy Paul’s “Me and Mr(s). Jones.” This girl can really belt it out, but the song itself was a snoozer.

Similarly, Ramiele Maubay’s “Don’t Leave Me this Way” was a nice performance, but it wasn’t anything that I’ll remember tomorrow. Maybe she should have added some of her Polynesian dance moves to it?

Way Too Old For Her Age

This week 17-year-old Alaina Whitaker could not channel Olivia Newton-John when she needed it. Alaina came across years older when you she sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” a song Olivia made memorable as the sweet young teeny bopper Sandy in Grease.

Worst Dressed

I know Idol isn’t a fashion show, but the thing I remember most about Alexandrea Lushington’s performance of “If You Leave Me Now” is that I couldn’t believe she was wearing shorts. I agree with Randy that the song was a safe, boring choice. Besides, Alex had a great deal more style and charisma last week.

Not Feeling the ‘70s Love

It pains me to name bookworm Amanda Overmyer in the bottom of the pack. I really like Amanda’s sound – and not just because she’s a fellow Hoosier – but tonight “Carry on My Wayward Son” was her weakest performance by far.

I expected more from Amanda on ‘70s night, as she said she was raised on this music. But Simon nailed it when he said that her performance “felt contrived.” Amanda needs to stick to her strength and her comfort zone and keep the hair and makeup people on a tight leash.

And finally, I didn’t feel any magic when Kady Malloy performed “Magic Man,” a Heart song she loves. I’m trying to understand why. But the Kady we fell in love with during the early phases just hasn’t found her groove in the semifinals.

By the way, how has Simon never heard “Magic Man?”

Overall, I think the women were more consistent than the men, but I think the men had better standout performances this week.

—————

I’ve created an Idol drinking game, where you take a shot whenever Simon says “indulgent

I’ve created an Idol drinking game, where you take a shot whenever Simon says “indulgent”. And take TWO SHOTS anytime anyone says “relevant.”

What I would have sung (if I had any vocal talent whatsoever and ended up on AI)
70s: Blondie’s One Way or Another
60s: Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody To Love (Trying to avoid ones that were done)

#1 Carly Smithson (aka Mick Overrated)
Bio: No way, she works at an Irish bar? Never would I have guessed…
I do love me some “Heart”. Do you think they had her go first b/c they’re so sure she will make it to the finals? I always wonder how they determine the order. Some of her scrunchy faces can get kind of annoying for some reason, but this isn’t a bad version of the song, and its a vast improvement over last week, but I am still not feeling her as the “girl they all have to beat”.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: You can tell you love Heart.

1st Commercial (9 min)

#2 Syesha Mercado (aka Nadia Revisited)
Bio: DUANE, find me a big beautiful shell! Whoa. That baby cry was eerily real.
The beginning of Me & Mr. Jones seems a bit shaky, no? But she’s gaining some momentum as it goes along, although I find the rendition a bit dull. Regardless, I like Syesha, and she is safe for a long time if she keeps choosing song which allow her to hit some big notes.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: I like it

#3 Brooke White (aka Herbal Essences)
Bio: She could sing while cutting hair. That could be a new salon gimmick.
Carly Simon is a good choice for her, b/c she has similar throaty vocals. But since it is “You’re So Vain”, you could infuse a little more anger, if that makes sense. LIke I never thought you were supposed to bounce around during the “clouds in my coffee” part. But overall, I enjoyed it. She could be a dark horse in the finals. She’s safe this week.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: And everyone was digging it. I really loved it.

2nd Commercial (23 min)

#4 Ramiele Mataubay (aka Polly Philipino)
Bio: Hula dancing can also come in handy when stripping (can explain later)
Nice choice in speeding things up this week after last week. Keep em guessing. Decent, but I think she was too quiet on some of the notes, and the piece of hair in her eye, well, if that was me, that would have been driving me nuts the entire song. Could be vulnerable this week.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: I feel like you didn’t get to perform your magic. / You’re right on, Ryan.

3rd Commercial (33 min)

#5 Kristy Lee Cook (aka Southern Fried Sacchrine)
Bio: That’s nice you enjoy being outside. What else were you supposed to do in Oklahoma? She is cuter in the hat, though.
Bouncy breasts can equal votes. But she needs to learn to bounce them without bobbing the head. It’s a skill. Better than that tripe last week. Her vocals were substantially better than before. Note: You’re no Good was during Linda Rondstadt’s country phase.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: Fit in the pocket.

4th Commercial (43 min)

#6 Amanda Overmyer (aka Biker Hair)
Bio: She reads. But hopefully not while riding the Harley
Oooh, a few slip ups in the beginning, looks like she gets a bit confused at some points. I still can’t believe she’s 23. Looks a bit hard, ya know? Oh, there’s part of the guitar solo where I had to do my flag solo for competition (random Me info). Trademark yell. I applaud her desire to present something different, but it was not a good song choice. She may be in trouble.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: You got some moves. You can dance.

5th Commercial (53 min)

#7 Alaina Whitaker (aka Over(it)wood)
Bio: Strange food habits. Actually, my brother-in-law also has a phobia of this and right now, he has probably declared her his favorite.
I hate this song in so many ways. She still looks way too much like Carrie Underwood. Picked up a bit in the middle, but in all actuality,
there is not a lot you can do with this song. She could be gone.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: I forget how young you are and how mature you are at the same time (followed by unidentifiable gibberish)

6th Commercial (62 min)

#8 Alexandrea Lushington (aka Lil Funky Tomboy)
Bio: Playing up the dead firefighter father angle AND signing at Ground Zero. Good marketing
First off, I love this song. Have you ever seen the movie Three Kings? It’s one of my all-time favorites. Great use of this song in that movie. I like the fact she’s doing something kind of different, but if you’re gonna sing this, you have to really NAIL the “oooh oh oooohs”. May sabotage her, but maybe her bio will help persuade voters. I still like this kid. I really, really do.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: I’ve always said you’re relevant.

#9 Kady Malloy (aka The Girl I Like Who Surprisingly Doesn’t Embody Everything I Hate)
Bio: Once again, I feel as if I am growing as a person because I love this girl. She’s a hot little blonde and I typically hate them, but I LOVE HER. She’s gorgeous and super talented.
Kick up the Heart a notch. I’ve always wanted to be able to sing Heart. She’s hot, too, and I think she’s got a brain and stuff knocking around in there. I almost want to make out (like in the what chicks do in college to impress guys at a bar sort of way) with her, except I think she’s like 17. I don’t care what the judges say! I LOVE KADY!! Wait…how has Simon never heard Magic Man before? I think they’re way too hard on her, to be honest, I think she’s exploring different music and having fun, why does she need to “define” herself when they get thrown with different genres/eras every week?
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: I think you have many hidden talents.

7th Commercial (77 min)

#10 Asia’h Epperson (aka I’m still thinking)
Bio: Bring it on, cheergirl.
I do not like this song for her, plus, its just a completely depressing song which should have been retired after Bridget Jones’
Diary. But she did get to display some power vocals, but I enjoyed last week’s performance from her much more. This didn’t do much for me
whatsoever.
Paula’s Sage Wisdom: The ending is what counts.

Disappointing, as I could not think of as many clever nicknames and Paula’s Sage Wisdom is so much better when she’s judging the men.

Top 6 (Women)
1) Carly Smithson (was the best tonight, to be honest)
2) Brooke White
3) Syesha Mercado
4) Kady Malloy
5) Ravioli Matulby (Polly Phillipino)
6) Asia’h Epperson

Gone: Alaina Whitaker & Amanda Overmyer or Alesandra Lushington

What can i say, they just about ALL sucked…even my dreadlocked little guy wasn’t all that great. There were three performances (geez…just like last week), that stood out…they are…

Chikezie – good outfit, good performance. Such a damned improvement from last week that I don’t know what to say except “good job”. He’s gonna move on i think.

Hot gymnastics guy (Hernandez?) - OK…he’s hot! He admits to wearing leotards. And, he can sing! And he’s hot. Oh wait…did i say that already? who f*cking cares! He’s hot…I think I got wood.

David Archuleta – oh geezus, I suddenly realized just how f’ing old i am when little elfin David gleefully admitted that he met the Season 1 contestants and sang to them…when he was 11. WTF??? And his talking voice…too cute…let’s get real, he’s gay but damn, those little gurls just love him. I do too! Because he can blow!!!! I did wish he would have sang the first verse and I didn’t like his too perfectly crafted answer to Randy for not singing it (I only had time for one verse and verse 3 is my favorite…huh???)…but all was forgiven because damn, the boi can sing!

whose out?

Luke!
big bird (can’t think of his name sang something blue last week)

that’s it!

UPDATE 02/28/08

First time in awhile that I was able to nail three of the four departing contestants – I guess my good ear was working just fine these past two days. I will admit that I purposely didn’t want to pick Joanne because I wanted her to get another chance. That wasn’t her best performance by a mile and she is capable of much better but it wasn’t to be. Why they paired her with Amanda I’ll never know — that gal wasn’t going anywhere and I think most folks were aware of that. Amy was no loss and she showed that again with her sing-off.

Now with the guys it was plausible that either Colton or Chikeze could get “das boot” given their performances while Garrett was a no-brainer. All in all, the right folks bowed out tonight and the rest better step up their game because it only gets harder from here.

Carry on!

I have no idea how America will react to Wednesday’s show this week as a surprising amount of

I have no idea how America will react to Wednesday’s show this week as a surprising amount of people seemed to express disappointment in Tuesday’s show which totally lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately, I did not escape the sting of disappointment tonight as it found me like a big boring ballad singing bug.

1-Kristy Lee Cook

My Song: “Rescue Me” by Fontella Base
My Story: This is only the second song I’ve learned. Until this moment I have only sung “Amazing Grace”.

She sold her horse for an American Idol Audition. Somewhere in there is a Richard III joke that I just can’t find. An easier joke to make is that ain’t no one gonna rescue this performance. Or “Rescue Me”…how about “Rescue Us”, the audience at home from tonight’s show! I think that she kept opening her eyes so big because of the 7 pounds of eye make-up they subjected her too. In the end, this was a mess. I’m not going to say it was entirely her fault because she was sick and first to go, but still…she’s in trouble.

2-Joanne Borgella

My Song: “Say A Little Prayer For You”
My Story: I like to pick ironic songs.

Like countless other contestants who have picked songs that will compound the harsh emotions of elimination, Joanne has opened herself up here. It was an okay performance with shaky vocals and truthfully, I’m not sure she has the voice to make it very far in this competition. Where’s Charles Grigsby now?

3-Alaina Whitaker

My Song: “More Today Than Yesterday”
My Story: I am the youngest contestant! IN YOUR FACE David Archuleta!

The 16-going-on-17 birthday girl that giggled about shoes really surprised me. She is definitely shooting for the Carrie Underwood niche and despite a rough start, I really liked her vocals and performance AND Paula made lucid jokes so really…everybody wins.

4-Amanda Obermeyer

My Song: “Baby, Please Don’t Go”
My Story: I will ROCK your mind and change your bed pan!

She smartly decided that she will do no more Janis Joplin. However, this wasn’t quite the right song choice for her. It was a weird performance but she has potential. She endeared herself to me a bit more when she admitted that the most embarrassing thing she’s had to do so far is the “dance” clip they filmed of each Idol. Then she totally made jokes about her motorcycle accident.

5-Amy Davis

My Song: “Where The Boys Are”
My Story: Being on American Idol is like 100 Christmases all wrapped up into one!

And you’re gonna get a bunch of coal for those 100 Christmases because you were bad! Whoo…that was rough dawg! Bad song choice. Bad performance.

6-Brooke White

My Song: “So Happy Together”
My Story: After Hollywood Week, I got a brush.

Not a bad vocal but an unusual performance. A lot of the old step touch and several head touches. After a rough start, she got her slaying on (what Randy!?) but the good girl bit has become a bit bothersome for me.

7-Alexandrea Lushington

My Song: “Spinning Wheel”
My Story: I’mma buy Randy some coffee.

Right now, Alexandrea is my favorite girl! Great start! Great performance! Good vocals although she kind of lost it a bit when she went into her higher range. There was a lot of shoulder in her performance which isn’t a bad thing but sometimes less is more. I have high hopes for her.

8-Kady Malloy

My Song: “Groovy Kind Of Love”
My Story: I’m dead inside.

Surprisingly good vocals but her performance was not so good. She was hysterical in the pre-performance clip when she imitated Britney Spears but absolutely none of her personality transfered over into her performance. Apparently her definition of serious is zombie than somber. Simon was way harsh Ty with her though and she was ticked and you could tell it. Kudos to her for holding her tongue.

9-Asia’h Epperson

My Song: “Piece Of My Heart”
My Story: Joking aside, her father died two days before her first audition for American Idol.

Good vocals! Good performance! Jumping around so much I was reminded a bit of George Huff, and yet…something was missing for me. I needed her to connect with the song. I will say that I really hope that Ryan doesn’t remind her of her dead father after every performance: “So you’ve heard the judges comments. How does it feel that Randy thought you were a pitchy dawg and that your dad died two days before your audition?”

10-Ramiele

My Song: “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”
My Story: Jasmine Who?

Nadia Turner performed this song in Season 4 and stole my heart forever. While this performance did not smolder like Nadia’s performance it was quite good. Ramiele is ADORABLE and she can sing. Right now, she is kind of the female equivalent of David Archuleta. Though unlikely, if Ramiele and David made it to the final two it would be the most ADORABLE Season Finale EVER!!!

11-Syesha Mercado

My Song: “Tobacco Road”
My Story: I have no neck. My head and torso are connected at all times by a jaunty scarf.

I really wanted to like Syesha, but I just couldn’t. She definitely seems a bit self-important. I could never have lunch with her. Her singing is more theatrics than actual talent. She screams some of the notes and although she hit that monster note at the end. I was left underwhelmed. She also totally did the Ashley Simpson “I was just caught lip-syncing dance” which was both surprising and disturbing.

12-Carly Smithson

My Song: “Shadow Of Your Smile”
My Story: I’ve had a record contract before at MCA records. During my stint there, Randy Jackson was Vice President of A&R. I was offered a contract and the record company spent $2.2 million dollars on my album. 378 copies were sold. (Wha whaa)

I don’t think I could be MORE over Carly Smithson. I couldn’t agree with Simon more. There is SO much hype about this girl and I don’t see it. She hasn’t blown me away with vocals or performance. Last night she looked like Morticia Adams. I don’t even care enough to hate her. I’m just consistently underwhelmed. If Randy continues to pimp her every week, then Carly Smithson could very well emerge as the villain of AI7!

Predictions:

Based on vocals and performance: Amy Davis needs to go.
Based on performance: Kady Mallow
Based on position and a lackluster performance: Kristy Lee Cook and Joanna Borgella.

JRamp Out!

Notes from my comfy bed this evening courtesy of my laptop, DVR and Slingbox (best gadget ever invented!)

Kristy Lee Cook – Rescue Me

Hummm…the gals are sure in it to win it tonight. Even with an obvious cold, she sounded and performed better than three quarters of last night’s male contestants. I liked the country color she brought to this golden oldie and she’s a contenda fur sure! I might agree with the wrong song choice but I felt she did the best she could with what she had.

Joanne Borgella – I Say A Little Prayer

Whoa – she’d better be really sick because that was NOT a good performance and I think she can do better. Pitch problems, low energy and an uneven delivery – even though I like her and want her to stay she has to step up her game, get well and go for it.

Alaina Whitaker – I Love You More Today Than Yesterday

This is a younger, more lively Carrie Underwood and I like her a LOT! She’s got a lot of charisma and a solid voice to match. Definitely one to watch…

Amanda Overmyer – Please Don’t Go

The rocker chick lives and sings the blues! She’s the authentic one of the bunch and so far is not compromising her sound. The dark horse of the bunch but she’ll be around for a good long while. She’s starting to grow on me as well.

Amy Davis – Where the Boys Are

We haven’t seem much of this gal up to now and believe me what I saw tonight was NOT worth waiting for. She killed this great Sedaka song and NOT in a good way (and she’s no Kim Locke either!). Gotta give it to Paula for being positive but it won’t be enough to save her.

Brooke White – Happy Together

Far and away a better rendition than last night! She sounded good, knew how to work the camera and looked like she was having a good time. She’s another one that’s growing on me and Simon just can’t seem to figure her out — GOOD!

Alexandrea Lushington – Spinning Wheel

WHOA! She’s quite the performer and she blew the roof off the place! The vocals suffered in a few places but it didn’t matter – as Randy would say “I was entertained!” The song is a tough one to interpret but she gave it her all and I think she’ll be around for awhile. Good!

Kady Malloy – Groovy Kind of Love

I like the sultry tone and when she was on, she was really on but there were some definite pitch problems – something tells me it was a bad song choice. She’s a great vocal mimic and could make a career of just that but I have to agree with Simon about her finding her own sound and shining. She needs to watch her expressions when reacting to the judges critique because she vacillated between looking like she was going to cry and wanting to punch Simon’s lights out. I had high hopes for this one but,,,

Asia’h Epperson - Piece of My Heart

What is it with Joplin this year? Every gal seems to want to take a crack at her but she did make it her own and just SANG the heck out of it. Good job and see you next week!

Ramiele Malubay – You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me

Oh boy, did I like this performance or what! This child has oodles of talent and knows how to use it. I agree with Randy – very classy indeed. She’s got some great vocal qualities and I see some great things ahead for her. Great big things from such a small package indeed!

Syesha Mercado – Tobacco Road

Tough song for a tough-a** singer – great pipes but can reign them in when needed. She’s safe to sing another week.

Carly Smithson – The Shadow of Your Smile

She looked sick but except for one place, sure as heck didn’t sound like it. She reminds me of a young Linda Eder with a touch of Cher’s exotic nature thrown in. Great rendition of this song and while I can understand some of Simon’s ranting, I think he was just at the end of a long ride on the cranky train this evening.

The tale of the tape comes tomorrow night — my picks to leave are:

Guys: Garrett and Colton

Gals: Amy and Kady
