Trailer for the TyK Pin-Up Calendar web series.

The web series was produced by Alexis Finch, Kathryn Henderson, Christina Stradone, and myself to build excitement for the release of TyK’s 2012 Pin-Up Calendar. TyK (Thought You Knew) is a non-profit seeking to help female cyclists gain confidence.

The weather is getting warmer and that means that the Spring issue of Sway Magazine is out on news stands!  Since this was Sway’s special music issue, we had a focus on hair looks inspired by some of the music industry’s leading ladies: Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Rowland, and Janelle Monae.

I met Zaki many years ago and if you’re a fan of hers you’ve probably seen photos that we shot way back (2006?).

Our latest shoot turned out pretty much exactly like the idea in my head.  I’m happy that she trusted me because I had her climbing rocks, walking in water, and crawling around on hot sand!  I’ll have more photos posted online soon for a project that I’m working on, but for now enjoy the preview!

This past weekend was a busy one for natural hair enthusiasts in Toronto.  There were several big events that took place centered around the care and beauty of black women’s naturally curly/kinky/locked/twisted/etc. hair.  If you follow blogs and Youtube videos on this topic then you know that one of the most well known beauty bloggers out there is Patrice Grell Yursik better known as Afrobella.  I had a fun shoot with Patrice and Afrodelik designs during her visit to Toronto.  More photos will be out soon on the Afrodelik site.  It was a pleasure working with these ladies… Oh, and Afrobella said she loved my hair (wheee!!!)

This issue’s beauty feature is a focus on blackberry lips, winged eyeliner, and glossy gold shadow.   Our gorgeous model Herieth had a busy fashion week in NYC right after our shoot, booking some big shows so I’m sure you’ll be seeing her face again.  As you’ll see from the shots below she had lots of energy!  Great shoot ladies!

L’Oqenz has so many cool glasses that we were inspired to do our own behind the scenes shoot with our favorite pairs and some of the laziest robot moves you’ll ever see.  We even got my little nephew in to it!  Well, I put the glasses on him and snapped a quick shot before he pulled them off.  Same thing.

“the shortest month”

In February I collaborated with isthecrux and talented artists Ashley Mckenzie-Barnes & Kalmplex on our exhibition “the shortest month” a reference to black history month being the shortest month of the year.

Our City Our Stories Exhibition

On Feb 18, Toronto City Hall hosted the exhibition for the participants of the Our City, Our Stories (powered by Canon) photography project run by The City of Toronto Arts & Culture Department.  I was a photography instructor in various locations for the length of the project (Mar – Dec ’09).  Four of the top ten finalists were my students and they won Canon cameras presented by Mayor David Miller and the President of Canon Canada.

My first solo photo show was an amazing success!  The show was a collection of my music photos from the past few years so of course I had to have performances from some of the amazing musicians that I have photographed!  HUGE THANKS to Harlem Restaurant and the performers: Janey B, Jahmez, DJ L’Oqenz, Tanika Charles, and Saidah Baba Talibah.  Also thanks to Sway for featuring the event in the magazine.

Saidah Baba Talibah’s video shoot was a really fun day on set – all because of all of the amazing people involved!  I shot the video stills, and you might even see me in the video. (I’ll post it when it comes out).

Algonquin Adobe Imaging Award

I was asked by the faculty at Algonquin College to judge the best graduating student portfolio for Algonquin College’s Photography Program.  I went down to Ottawa in April  to present the award at the Adobe Headquarters.  It was a difficult decision to make with all of the talented photographers to choose from so congrats to Thomas Dagg!
