The 2013 award season came to an end last night, Sunday, 24 February, with the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Big winners of the night were Jennifer Lawrence, Ang Lee, Adele, Daniel Day-Lewis and ‘Argo‘, while director Steven Spielberg was the biggest loser of the night.

Below, checkout what all the stars wore.

WORST-DRESSED: Kristen Stewart was unpolished in a strapless Reem Acra tulle dress.

BEST-DRESSED: ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ heroine Jessica Chastain channeled old Hollywood glamour in a strapless custom Armani dress.

‘The Master‘ sweetheart Amy Adams brought some much-needed drama in this custom Oscar de la Renta princess ballgown.

BEST-DRESSED: Zoe Saldana demanded some attention in a romantic and soft Alexis Mabille couture gown.

Amanda Seyfried showed some cleavage in a custom Alexander McQueen halter gown.

I have to say, I was pretty disappointed in this year’s Oscars dresses – usually I find about 10 or 15 that I’m just dying to share, but this year was the complete opposite. There were a few, however, that knocked it so far out of the park in my book that it made up for everyone else. Here are my favorites from tonight – who did you enjoy the most?

Jon Hamm and his wife, Jennifer Westfeldt. They look amazing! Her dress just hugs her in all the right places.

Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta. She looks flawless! I love a good dramatic princess gown.

I absolutely love how different this Alexis Mabille gown is on Zoe Saldana. I love that she didn’t play it safe and she looks amazing!

Last but certainly not least, Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive. I can’t get over how well this dress goes with her skin and hair – she looks stunning! Definitely my best dressed pick of the night.

The 2013 Oscars are just starting & there’s so much to talk about from tonight’s red carpet, including the anticipation behind the performances from the cast of Les Miserables, as well as the tribute to the James Bond series. Some of my favorites so far include Naomi Watts‘ high fashion look from Armani Prive, Reese Witherspoon‘s classic old Hollywood Louis Vuitton cobalt gown, Zoe Saldana‘s two-tone fishtail gown by Alexis Mabille, & Sandra Bullock‘s lace-detailed Elie Saab gown.

Other notable hits include Jessica Chastain (in Giorgio Armani), Nicole Kidman (in L’Wren Scott), Jennifer Garner (in Gucci), Kerry Washington (in Miu Miu), & Charlize Theron (in Dior Haute Couture). Not to mention that I predicted Jennifer Lawrence‘s Dior Haute Couture gown as an Oscar pick in my recent post, which is nothing short of fabulous when it hit the red carpet!

50 Shades of Blush: Oscars 2013

The Oscars are without a doubt the biggest event in Hollywood. So I always expect the stars to bring it on the red carpet. They did not disappoint. Blush tones were the trend of the night with some shades of red and blue. I was thrilled to see very little black [you know I love black, but I like to see color for the Oscars! It's almost spring, after all , and I think there were some amazing beauty moments as well as fashion moments.

Let's start, of course, with the most fabulous looks from the night.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture. I really love the range of looks she's worn over the awards season, with red at the Globes, navy at the SAGs and this cream color for the Oscars. All Dior, but we've seen a wide range of amazing colors on her. And I love her hair! She can do no wrong.

Jennifer Aniston in Valentino. Jen is getting a lot of flack for being too safe, too boring, but let's remember how often Jen wears black on a carpet. This look is amazing on her! She looks great in red and I actually really like her hair down and flowing. She is known for her gorgeous hair, after all!

Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive. Before Naomi Watts showed up, Jessica Chastain was 100% going to be my best dressed star. It's super close. I love this color on her and her hair and makeup, wow! I love the sparkle and the shape is so perfect for her body.

Charlize Theron in Dior. She is another start that can do no wrong for me, but she is stunning in Dior. What I love most, though, is how she's rocking her short hair. Pixie cuts are SO HARD to pull off but she does it so extraordinarily well. Wow.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu. I love the jewels and the coral/orange/red shade of this dress. So fabulous! If her hair was up, it would have been better, but I still love.

Nicole Kidman in L'Wren Scott. I wont' say I'm blown away by Nicole's look, but I just have to give her props because it's so much better than what she's been wearing lately. I do like her hair and her skin looks amazing.

Stacy Keibler in Naeem Khan. I chose this as a best dressed because it's so unique and interesting! I think a lot of people will think it's a miss, but I really like it! George could use a shave, though

Adele in Jenny Packham. Beautiful, sparkly, figure-flattering. Whoever does her makeup needs to move to America and be my personal makeup artist, please! I hope she wins for Skyfall!

Jennifer Garner in Gucci. I absolutely love this wine color on Jen! The necklace is a great accessory. What's really amazing about this dress is the back! Great choice!

Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta. You gotta love a girl in a princess dress. I don't normally love the princess dress, but Amy is rocking it! I love the cool bluish/gray on her with her hair color!

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive. Wow, is all I can say. The neckline is amazing, not to mention the head to toe sparkle and the gorgeous shade of gray. She is so pretty it's not even fair.

Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton. My initial thoughts on this dress were that it doesn't fit her properly and doesn't do her justice. But I really grew to love this look while she was doing her interviews. Cobalt is my favorite color right now, and she rocks it! The shape is very flattering, especially given that she just had a baby! And her hair officially wins best hair of the night! Gorgeous!

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji. Gorgeous! I love this color and the way it's cut is so stunning on her!

There were a couple of looks that I am just so undecided on! I need your help figuring out if I like them!

Jennifer Hudson in Robert Cavalli. At first I kind of hated this dress, but now I'm just confused. I like the color of the dress, the sparkle, the shape, but I really don't like her shoe color choice and her hair.

Halle Berry in Versace. Another dress I am torn about! I like the structure and the sleeves. And the sparkle. But maybe the stripes are just too busy? What do you think?

Sandra Bullock in Elie Saab. It's a very safe choice and I'm not wowed by it, but I do think she looks pretty. Just not a wow moment.

Kristen Stewart in Reem Acra. She is very on trend with the blush tones, but I just can't decide if I think she looks good or sloppy. Her hair is looking better than usual [meaning she brushed it] but I’m pretty sick of her wearing clothing that looks like lingerie. But it’s a pretty dress. Torn!

And now, for the worst. There actually weren’t many looks that I didn’t dig tonight. But there were a few that just weren’t working.

Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille. Ugh! I really hate to say this because I like some of the dress. I love the beautiful detail on the top, but I hate the belt with the big stupid bow and I’m not a fan of the layering at the bottom. But she’s so pretty.

Anne Hathaway in Prada. I don’t even know where to begin. I think this will go down in history as an all-time worst dressed look. We all know Anne is about to win an Oscar and she chooses THIS dress? It’s dull, it’s wrinkly, it washes her out. Not to mention the fact that she needs to attend to her – ahem – girls. Such a disappointment.

Melissa McCarthy in David Meester. I love Melissa McCarthy and I actually love this dress, but it’s not tailored very well at all. It seems like the ruching is in the wrong place and the bust looks weird. I am kind of feeling her big hair though!

Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen. This was difficult because I actually like the color of the dress and the cool print, but I hate the keyhole neck. It feels too dated, not fresh enough!

Agree or disagree? I’m sad that awards season is over, but it has been a great one and I have had a ball blogging about all of the best and worst celebrity looks!

Sunny Gu has recently created a very nice series on her blog in the past few weeks and today, I am going to show you these 5 fashion illustrations.

Giambattista Valli S/S 2013 Haute Couture

These 5 pieces are inspired by few different S/S 2013 Haute Couture and F/W 2013 Ready To Wear collections. I personally love these illustrations because Sunny has put a creative twist on each of them. All the models are like fairies and each of them carries a giant flower bouquet that reflects the particular collection. Here is what she has to say about this Flower Mood series (and you will not find this descirption elsewhere):

“Lately I’m working on a series of fashion illustrations that combines the latest runway looks and paired each of them with flowers that inspired by the designs.

Even though it was nice to capture the beauty of the amazing designs in the form of illustration in the past few seasons, I wasn’t satisfying with some of the images. This is because every time I watch fashion shows, there are always many fantasy images in my head. So I thought, why not draw it? Why keep it inside? Therefore, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and add a bit a fun to my illustrations.

Christian Dior Spring 2013 Couture was the first collection that caught my eyes and inspired me to start a floral inspired series. For the past few weeks, I was drawing each girl posing with a flower. The composition and content would change as I continued painting them. I wanted to keep the looks fresh and exciting! I wish to challenge myself and have fun at the same time. I hope you are having fun following my artistic journey too!”

Without a doubt, this series is beautiful and I am happy to witness Sunny‘s new illustration direction. I strongly believe her style will continue to evolve and the illustrations you see here are just the beginning of her new journey.

The sober age of couture

As the Autumn/Winter 2013 Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris draws to a close, FAULT Magazine takes a look at the collections and contemplates over the new sober era of Paris couture.

Haute couture is fundamentally lavish and decadent by default. Catering to an audience to whom money is no object – a prerequisite in belonging to the notoriously exclusive club of couture clientele – it will always bear luxury as a key part of its DNA. The resent seasons have however shown a fresh approach – the theatrics of yesteryear have been replaced by a simpler and more sober take on the subject. Paris is bursting with fresh ideas and nowhere else has the change been as obvious as in haute couture. As the 16 fashion houses took to the stage, the trend towards new sobriety became clearer than ever.

It would be presumptuous to put all the ‘blame’ on just one man, but Raf Simons certainly has got something to do with it. Only presenting his second couture collection at Christian Dior this season, he has already demonstrated enormous talent and remarkable ability to learn new aesthetic languages and make them his own. Simons spent months studying his master Christian Dior, perhaps the most famous man of haute couture, and is now – respectfully – translating Dior’s vocabulary into a modern artistic expression. By reinventing the ‘New Look’, Simons put a fresh and relaxed spin on a-line skirts and cinched waists. Giambattista Valli also turned down the volume in his collection – while remaining loyal to his repertoire of opulent proportions and flower blossoms, he ditched his usual loud colour pallet for a less vocal combination of blacks and whites, creams and toned down pinks and yellows. It was still Valli at his best, but lighter and easier to digest.

The house of Valentino at the hands of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli has been promoting the new simplicity for seasons. Borrowing from the fashion repertoire of forest fairies, the ethereal beauties of pre-Raphaelite paintings and the golden age of couture, they re-imagined not just couture but Valentino’s own heritage. The mandatory red popped up in the shape of flirty strapless dresses that would have made Grace Kelly jump with joy. The go-to designer for the red carper stylists, Elie Saab masterfully covered up his glamour puss in long-sleeved grownup gowns and stuck to sober pastels without making discounts on his signature style of heavy beading and luxurious embroidery.

While Dior, Valli and Valentino paid tribute to the golden age of couture, Karl at Chanel remained true to his usual habit of plagiarising himself. While we may be accustomed to Lagerfeld re-heating the same soup over and over again, it was refreshing to see him try to breath in the same rhythm as the younger designers. The Chanel girl of the season is lovely – she covers up and she keeps her cool. She is grown up and sophisticated, even in the feathery fairy dresses (do we see a trend here?) of the finale set. Karl perhaps made the biggest statement of the season by sending out not one but two brides in the finale, clearly expressing his views on same sex marriage.

Even Donatella at Atelier Versace chose a more sober approach by experimenting with pinstripe suits (!). Naturally it was all gold embellished and provocatively over-decorated, but what would Versace be without being too much. Pants and pantsuits (with little less embellishment, naturally) were also seen at Armani Privé and Alexis Mabille, opening the door to a whole new set of ideas.

There are many reasons why couturiers are exploring their more sober and sophisticated heritage. Undoubtedly John Galliano’s unceremonious dismissal from Dior in 2011 and Raf Simons’s subsequent appointment as the new Creative Director influenced the new aesthetic, as did the bankruptcy of Christian Lacroix in 2009. Both men were known as the pioneers of exuberant decadence, often resembling their catwalks to the opera stage. Galliano’s dismissal marked the end of an era, making way to new creativity. It may also have something to do with inclusion of avant-garde fashion house Maison Martin Margiela to the couture schedule and it most definitely has a lot to do with the economic downturn of recent years. The younger designers in Paris have steered the ship to calmer seas – the future of Paris couture is respectful, both towards the female body and its own heritage.
