I don’t know about you, but when i was a kid, I only got one pair of Pumas and the first of  many rules that came with the ‘advantages’ of having a pair was ‘DO NOT KICK ROCKS’ and ‘DO NOT KICK THE BALL’ with them shoes.

The following blog post is an edited version of a piece I wrote just before the release of Brüno last July and just after stepping down as a teacher from the private Christian school I worked at during the ‘08-’09 school year. I’ll be posting the piece, which was originally entitled “Real Men Aren’t Gay: Homophobia, Sexism & the Current State of Masculinities,” over the next several days in multiple parts (it’s kind of long).

(Very important disclaimer: I’m not suggesting you run to the video store to rent this movie!)

Part 1:

It’s crude. It’s graphic. It’s beyond politically incorrect. And it’s bound to make just about anyone extremely uncomfortable. Yet, Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s most recent movie, due out on DVD later this week, may be one of the most important movies of the year.

Frankly, I don’t even find Brüno that funny. On a strictly comedic level, he doesn’t hold a candle to Cohen’s other two characters, Borat and (still my favorite) Ali G. But to evaluate Cohen’s work strictly in terms of its comedic value is to overlook its deeper agenda.

Sure, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was arguably the funniest movie of 2006, but the film’s real strength was in its ability to expose the latent bigotries of American public life. And Brüno’s no exception: Behind all of its offensive humor, the film succeeds in exposing the deep-seated hatred for homosexuals in this country.

Having worked as a teacher at a Christian high school, an environment in which otherwise concealed hate is often embraced, if not lauded, I am inclined to say that of all the latent forms of hatred that live on in this country, none are as widespread and vitriolic as that currently harbored for homosexuals.

While Cohen doesn’t exactly “prove” this to be the case with Brüno—though I think he comes close—he goes beyond a simple illustration or a mere confirmation of hatred, and it’s this move which accounts for the true genius of his movie and his comedy in general.

Though perhaps capable of alarming us on some visceral level, simple illustrations and confirmations of hate leave the more important question of why we hate in the first place completely unanswered and often present hate as a whimsical emotion altogether devoid of meaning. But whether our hate is for homosexuals, Muslims, Americans or ponies, it always carries meaning, and Cohen, it seems to me, understands this (the nature of hate) as well as anyone in Hollywood today…

I visited the Big Pit mining museum (seen at the start of this clip) a few months ago. It was damp. Wish I’d seen this video before I went. “That is – a crap job.” Lol.

Just looked at this post again and realised that some people might form the wrong impression about the Pwll Mawr National Coal Museum on the strength of it. I just want to say that I really had a marvellous time there and enjoyed its many outstanding and informative exhibitions, such as the Pithead Baths and the mine itself (to name but two of many), immensely, all the while looked after by a friendly, expert staff, some of whom were miners themselves before the entire industry sadly fell victim to a combination of the cold equations of global economics and the collateral damage that is always the by-product of ideological warfare.

Wales, especially West Wales, still boasts about 300 year’s worth of the cleanest coal in the world, you know. Perhaps we’ll need it one day.

Anyway, just wanted to clear that up.

We found this list of stoner terms online and thought we’d share them.  Some of the terms are more frequently used in America however most (if not all) have made their way into the international stoner vocabulary.  We also dug up a classic clip of Ali G listing other stoner terms:

April 20th (4/20) – International Cannabis Day, everyone blazes on this day. Everyone blazes at 4:20 every day too.

Blaze – To get high!

Blunt - Either a hollowed out cigar filled with marijuana or (more commonly) a “marijuana cigarette” rolled with a blunt wrap (tobacco paper or emptied cigar).

Bowl - Can refer either to the part of a piece that holds cannabis, or to the pipe itself.

Bogart - The act of holding on to a joint/piece/blunt for too long, or one who does such an act: “Don’t bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me”.

Boo – A street name for marijuana, listed only in anti-drug literature. No one has ever heard or used it. If you are ever arrested for possession, you should use this term, saving the taxpayers the expense of correcting and reprinting anti-pot pamphlets.

Kick-Hole / Carb – The hole on the side of a piece used to regulate air flow. Hold it closed with your thumb while inhaling to draw smoke into the chamber, then release to let air in and force the smoke into your lungs. Also called a “rush hole”.

Cherry – The red burning coal of marijuana in a joint or bowl.

Chillum – A pipe with the bowl in line with the stem.

Ganja – Just 1 of many synonyms for cannabis, others include  Dope, Marijuana, Grass, Draw, Puff, Blow, Weed, Gear, Ganja, Herb, Wacky Baccy, Skunk, Pot, Bob Hope and Bob – see the Ali G video below for many more

Hashish / Hash - The resin secreted by a marijuana plant. Different kinds of hash are prepared with a variety of recipes.

Hash oil - A liquid extracted from marijuana. Use mostly by dipping smokeables into the hash oil.

Hit – A drag or puff cannabis.

Hot Box / White wall - Getting high in a car or small space with no ventilation so that you are constantly inhaling atmospheric smoke.

Joint / Zut / Doob / Doobie - Marijuana cigarette. Kind Bud (chronic, hydro, sticky icky, highs) – High potency Cannabis.

Mids – Descent cannabis for the money you pay for it, if you don’t have a lot of money this is the best way to go.

Moocher – Someone who will smoke your bud in a second, but never has any of their own.

Papers / Skins – Cigarette papers used for rolling joints.

Piece - Refers to a pipe of one sort or another.

Resin - Black tar like stuff that builds up in smoking apparatuses.

Schwag – Low grade cannabis or the leftovers from the bottom of a big bag.

(The fact that it’s also the day Marie Osmond was born? Pay no attention to that. Besides, if we celebrate her birthday it might make her attempt to smile. Then her face will shatter. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that on my conscience.)

I promise I’ll come up with a theory (which is not my own!) that’ll please Christians as well as Agnostics. Don’t you guys just looove Middle Ground?

Needless to say, there is some disconnect between the urban hip-hop culture and his upbringing.  He is from the affluent suburbs of the city and resides in a gated golf course community.  He has attended private schools and had tutors until middle or high school when his parents, a prominent doctor and his trophy wife, decided that he needed to meet “different” people so that he could speak of his experiences with diversity on his college applications (despite the fact he is a shoe-in at a private Northeastern university because he is a legacy and the new science building was funded by his family’s trust fund).

Often, this transformative journey begins in school when he is first introduced to rap and/or hip-hop music.  Although he has never been to one nor met anyone who is from a ghetto, the projects, or the hood, something resonates with him and he is drawn to the mannerisms, slang, apparel, and general culture of urban African Americans.  And so he becomes a wigger.

He speaks in a dialect that combines the speech patterns of Mushmouth from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, Pootie Tang, and Snoop Dogg into a nearly indecipherable parlance.

He dresses like a bad imitation of Eminem, Kevin Federline, or to a lesser degree Justin Timberlake.  Think Ali G or anyone in the movie Malibu’s Most Wanted.  He is seen wearing oversized and baggy clothes or track suits with a puffy jacket even when it is 120° in the shade as he cruises his hood, Palm Springs, in the middle of the summer.  He prefers “bling” chains adorned with diamonds and some medallion touting how “hard” he is or simply saying “Thug Life” in homage to his boy, Tupac.  Additionally he wears a do-rag he picked up at the local Hot-Topic or a throwback sports team hat with a flat rim and the sticker still on it.

So what does he do with his free time?  He seems to enjoy cruising around his hood with his homies looking for shorties to holla’ at in his behemoth SUV, either a Navigator or an Escalade with tinted windows and spinner rims.  He can often be found sitting in the local park, naturally named after his family, drinking 40s of Colt [.45] or OE [Old English].  As he sips on the juice with his crew, he often laments that he is “missundastood” and will “bust a cap in yo’ ass if you be playa hatin’.”  His favorite past time without fail is ghost ridin’ da whip.  Although he believes he looks like THIS when he does it, it actually is quite a spectacular failure and he looks something like THIS.

There is a very funny moment in one of the shows by Ali G (a.k.a. the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen) where he interviews an American military officer. He asks him whether he has met General Schwarzkopf, or General Colin Powell – and in each case the officer affirms that he has. Ali G then wants to know whether he has met General Motors, at which point the officer doesn’t know how to respond and is obviously desperately trying to work out whether this is a prank or whether he has simply stumbled upon an imbecile. Well, perhaps Ali G could ask on a future occasion whether his target had met General Knowledge. The truthful answer would probably have had to be that, no, he had not.

In my job I am surrounded by people of all ages who are extraordinarily intelligent and are often either working on or studying something at the very cutting edge of knowledge. But when it comes to declaring whether Baku is in Mongolia or Azerbaijan they have no idea; and when someone asks them to calculate 6 times 8, they take out a calculator.

It is possible that a product of specialisation is increasing unfamiliarity with anything outside of the chosen specialism. Or maybe it is just that general knowledge no longer has a platform except maybe on reality TV; but no matter how often you watch Who Wants to be a Millionaire, it will never fill the gap.

I think it is important that we educate and train people so that they will have the specific skills they need, but it is also vital that young people in particular acquire a working knowledge more generally of the world in which they live and in which they will want to be active. Surveys (such as this one) regularly reveal some really broad gaps in popular knowledge; but rather than throw up our arms in mock despair, we should look at how we educate people and what materials we give them in order to improve their general knowledge. When I was a young boy there were plenty of supports, from magazines like Look and Learn (which probably now sounds impossibly nerdy) to the whole series of Ladybird books. There is no real modern equivalent of such didactic materials, and where today entertainment does focus on general knowledge it treats it like a lottery proposition: your knowing the answer to some question is the occurrence of a statistical near-impossibility and thus entertaining.

I don’t really know what the answer is to my complaint, but I am firmly of the view that we must try to recover some of that general knowledge and make it common property again. That way we can laugh at Ali G because we actually know why it’s funny.

President Obama in da House of Representatives

So, Joe Wilson called President Obama a liar.

Yes, it was a major breach of etiquette – a bit like someone shouting at the Queen when she’s speaking at the opening of Parliament – and really a rather crass thing to do, but Wilson has since apologised.

However, feelings are running so high in the US – chiefly over Obama’s healthcare plans – that some commentators are now saying some pretty ridiculous things which, in some cases, border on the totally cunting stupid.

One  commentator, whose name escapes me, said that Wilson’s shout is now being interpreted by some on the Left as being racist.

When pressed for a reason, Wilson’s constituency was cited – ‘South Carolina. It’s in the South and they have a history of racism there.’

Well, that’s one way of disposing of half your critics – dismissing them as racist because of where they live.

It reminded me a bit of Ali G when he asks, ‘Is it ‘cos I is black?’

It’s that automatic assumption that you’re criticising a person because of what they are rather than what they say, and it’s rapidly developing into an artform here in the UK, when people are too scared to express their views for fear that they will be accused of some sort of prejudice.

Some people aren’t too scared, however.

And since when did we become so scared of the truth?

Em 2006 o mundo descobriu o comediante Inglês Sacha Baron Cohen como Borat o segundo melhor repórter do Cazaquistão em suas aventuras pelos Estados Unidos e agora em 2009 O Repórter de moda Austríaco que depois de ver sua carreira acabar em seu país natal decide atravessar o Atlântico e ir para América alcançar o sucesso e se tornar “uber famoso”. E claro que nada de bom pode sair daí.
Todos aqueles que riram, fizeram cara de nojo e se indignaram com Borat, podem esperar muito mais de Bruno, que eleva a escatologia e a vergonha alheia ao cubo em cenas que a cada segundo alfineta o estilo americano de vida com todo seu preconceito, certezas e futilidade. Cenas impagáveis como Bruno em uma festa de swing são características desse humor negro e doentio que ficou conhecido no primeiro filme de Sacha.
O enredo de Bruno é bem parecido com o de Borat o que acaba deixando a seqüência parecida com o spin-off de uma série qualquer e dá a sensação de deja vu em algumas cenas, mas que mesmo assim não tiram o mérito de toda a produção que supera as expectativas de uma continuação.
Enfim Bruno é um ótimo filme para aquelas pessoas, que não se chocam fácil e que se divertem muito mais com o politicamente incorreto. Palmas para Sacha que consegue tantas proezas com personagens tão distintas entre si, mas todas cumprem o seu papel, sendo um repórter do Cazaquistão, um outro repórter homossexual austríaco, um rapper, ou um barbeiro charlatão.

What a mission to find a special edition of this…in fact…the only place i could find it was an Australian vendor. But i LOVE these definitive editions, and since the only version South Africa has is the cr@ppy VHS transfer that is essentially the cut version of the movie…this was well worth it. Great Arnie action, and a very young Alyssa Milano. Classic.

Last Action Hero

You know…this is such an underated movie. Although, to be honest, I was disappointed with it like most people when I saw it at the cinema, but have since learned to love it. A ton of inside jokes. Give it another chance. Arnie for life.

Daylight

I could spend all day watching Stallone movies. This is a sleeper hit in my eyes, a throwback to the disaster movies of the 70s…but the guy who steals the show is Viggo Mortensen.

Ok ok, I actually got this one on the weekend, but havent watched it yet. Clint Eastwood is the last of the movie icons in my opinion. I would follow him off a cliff he said i’d be ok. Each film he does is another edition to a legacy that is unparalleled.

Borat managed to make a quarter of a billion, so how much will Bruno make? Sacha Baron Cohen on the David Letterman show as himself and not Borat or Bruno –  he’s  definitely one of the top 10 comedians around, hands down.
