So with remote access to my home computer from a cell phone… It appears I will always have an alibi! That was the home of the father; too many people would have access to that computer if you ask me. Seriously though, anyone could have updated his status including members of his own family. I would hope they had more evidence of his whereabouts than his retarded Facebook status but from the article it seems not. But then again you have courts dealing with jurors Facebooking and Myspacing and a judge who sends status updates while on the bench. Now they are saying that you should watch accepting employees and managers on Facebook because it could easily cause problems and or get someone sued. Makes me think twice when I want to post now.

Was reading the papers one morning and was astonished by this article which links crime with Facebook?

This is probably 2 weeks back but this is really interesting! I need to talk about how AMAZING Social Media has become!

CASE:  Boy,19 was 12 miles away from in Brooklyn when two guys were mugged. Having known that the police were looking for him in connection in a robbery, he turned in, confident that he will be released. However, he was picked up by one of the victims in lineup and was charged and jailed.

After 2 weeks, he was released as he has an Alibi that proves that he could not be at the scene!

ALIBI : Facebook Updates ” Where MY pancakes!” a min before the robbery.

It is true! “Facebook can get out of jail! ” Never thought that Social Media can be so amazing? From entertainment, to connection between friends, to socialising to a tool of marketers and now an ALIBI!

That is something commendable about Online Social Networking Sites! It records time,date and even from where you posted it! You cannot cheat! If you are tweet-ing or surfing net on Mobile! It shows!

Now I find updates on these sites are really essential. Cases like this, save your life! Even dumb updates help!

But what happens if online social network join telephone records and video cameras as means of establishing an alibi? As technology advanced, people hold different identities behind their screens, what happens if others misuse it? Then it wouldn’t be credible anymore.

Quoted: “We’re in a much more trackable world, and for better and for worse,” said attorney Jonathan Handel. “The extent to which it means that the right people get prosecuted and the innocent get their cases dropped, that’s all of the good.”

I believe Online Social Network will definitely help a lot innocent people over at US! (I doubt we will have it here!)  However, there will definitely be some people who wants to test the system and abuse this form of alibi, leverage on it and escape penalties after committing a crime. It is a controversial topic.

However, I totally agree with Mr Jonathan Handel! Privacy Issue comes to question. If the Social Network Experts get to view everything that is online? Then he will probably know everything. Halt! He might be GOOGLE?

But I wonder how do one define a Social Network Expert? Will there be a diploma or even degree for that next time?

Looks like our lives are moving on to the virtual platform very very soon! With jobs online, shops online, books online,etc. Almost everything! What will become of us if one day, internet dies ? For even an hour? I will feel distant from the world. Because we are all living in the Cyber world in Internet time with lots of friends and suddenly. Life is boring and dull. Trust Me! Kilka setek studentów politologii i europeistyki witało tradycyjnie już rok akademicki w Alibi. Oczywiście nie mogło mnie tam zabraknąć

Z czystym sumieniem mogę przyznać: to była jedna z najlepszych imprez w tym roku akademickim! Alibi pękało w szwach, bawiłam się rewelacyjnie. Organizacją zajmowało się KMP.

This is a story that might be close to the hearts of many people. We’ve constantly mentioned on the show about people getting upset that Google Street View is causing offence and some concerns over security.

The Swiss have been asking that Facebook blur more images, but it seems that they are still not satisfied. Top of the agenda of concern for the Swiss is about people shown in sensitive locations such as hospitals, prisons or schools, but also is concern that the height of the camera is higher than the view seen by a normal passer-by – ie. above wall or fence level.

Facebook Status Provides Alibi

This was an amusing story. A 19-year-old New Yorker was acquitted after it emerged that he made a status update from a computer at his father’s home at the same time as being accused of committing armed robbery in Brooklyn. Presumably police asked Facebook and the ISP for confirmation of times and updates.

17 octobre dernier, Brooklyn. Un Américain de 19 ans est accusé de vol à main armée contre deux passants. Mais voilà, le jeune homme a déclaré avoir mis à jour son profil Facebook depuis l’ordinateur de son père à Harlem, quelques instants seulement avant l’agression. Un alibi électronique qui va le disculper aux yeux de la cour.

Les réseaux sociaux, une nouvelle arme juridique ?

Facebook serait-il en train de se substituer à toute enquête judiciaire ? En septembre dernier, un voleur avait été appréhendé grâce au réseau social le plus utilisé au monde. En effet, le malfrat avait alors mis à jour son statut depuis l’ordinateur de sa victime, en inscrivant alors « doing robbery » (en train de commettre un vol). Pas très futé, certes. Mais Facebook avait aussi permis à deux fillettes d’être sauvées alors qu’elles étaient coincées dans un collecteur d’eaux pluviales. Elles avaient updaté leur profil depuis leur téléphone portable, et leurs amis avaient alors alerté les autorités compétentes.

Et c’est aussi ce qui a sauvé Rodney Bradford, un jeune new-yorkais de 19 ans. Accusé d’avoir agressé deux passants à Brooklyn le 17 octobre, il avait clamé son innocence, avec comme seule preuve la mise à jour de son profil Facebook depuis l’ordinateur de son père, qui habite Harlem. L’accusation vérifie l’information auprès du réseau social : la connexion provenait bien de l’adresse IP du PC du père. Après douze jours d’incarcération, toutes les charges contre le jeune homme ont été abandonnées. Mais si son innocence ne faisait aucun doute, comment pouvait-on être sûr que c’était bien Rodney Bradford qui se trouvait derrière son ordinateur à ce moment-là ?

Cette affaire met directement en cause la confiance que peut attribuer la justice envers les preuves numériques. Car si le profil de Rodney avait effectivement été mis à jour quelques minutes avant l’agression, rien ne prouve qu’il est l’auteur de ce message. Avec un identifiant et un mot de passe, n’importe qui aurait pu se substituer à lui derrière le clavier. Pour son avocat, Robert Reuland, il s’agit néanmoins d’un « alibi solide », confirmé par le père et la belle-mère du suspect. Et c’est sans doute ce qui a conforté le jury dans sa décision de relaxer le présumé coupable au bout de deux mois. Comme quoi, demander à sa copine où elle a rangé les gâteaux peut vous éviter la prison. Merci Facebook.

New York (CNN) — For 19-year-old Rodney Bradford, a simple Facebook status update turned into much more: a rock-solid alibi after he was accused of a crime.

Confirmation of the time stamp on the update and the location from which it was entered showed he could not have been at the scene of a robbery in another part of New York City. After he had spent almost two weeks in jail, the case against him was dismissed.

The story began at 11:49 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, when Bradford was updating his Facebook status at his father’s home in Harlem. A minute later, 12 miles away in Brooklyn, two men were mugged at gunpoint.

The next day, Bradford, who is facing a separate 2008 robbery indictment, found out police were looking for him in connection with the Brooklyn robbery.

Bradford turned himself in, confident he would be cleared. But after one of the victims picked him out of a lineup, he was charged with robbery in the first degree and sent to Rikers Island, home of the New York City jail.

It wasn’t until Rodney Bradford Sr. discovered his son’s Facebook update that the young man’s defense attorney realized he had an unbeatable alibi.

“Throughout that week,” said the attorney, Robert Reuland, “I worked with the district attorney’s office and made them aware of who our alibis were, presented the Facebook evidence and generally tried to convince them that it would be wrong to proceed to an indictment in light of this evidence.”

The district attorney subpoenaed Facebook for documentation that would prove Bradford had updated his account from his father’s home in Harlem. It worked.

“It all corroborated our alibis,” explained Reuland. “The Facebook thing was really the icing on the cake. I think, ultimately, it’s what prompted the DA to dismiss.”

The district attorney’s office would not comment on the story because the case is sealed.

Facebook officials said they are “pleased” they were “able to serve as a constructive part of the judicial process.”

The online social network is ready to join telephone records and video cameras as a means of establishing an alibi — but the implications are both good and bad, says an intellectual property attorney versed in the medium.

“We’re in a much more trackable world, and for better and for worse,” said attorney Jonathan Handel. “The extent to which it means that the right people get prosecuted and the innocent get their cases dropped, that’s all of the good.”

But, he said, the issue of privacy is also at stake.

And he pointed out that it could be argued the Facebook update was a set-up.

“On the Internet, nobody really knows it’s you,” he said. “A kid could set up an alibi by setting up a Facebook update.”

Reuland finds that unlikely.

“This is a 19-year-old kid. He’s not a criminal genius setting up an elaborate alibi for himself,” he said. “This is not the kind of thing someone would fake.” And if someone were going to fake it, he said, “They’d do it in a lot clearer way” than the inside joke that Bradford posted: “On the phone with this fat chick… where my IHOP.”

The message was met with some incomprehension by reporters first writing about the story, who didn’t quite understand the reference to the International House of Pancakes.

Reuland explained it this way: The “fat chick” was a playful reference to Bradford’s pregnant girlfriend who was irked that he, his father and his stepmother had gone to an IHOP without her the night before. The update teased that she wondered where her pancakes were.

“He was just kind of taunting her playfully about having been to IHOP,” Reuland said. “I know it sounds not very nice but it’s sort of a reference to her because she’s pregnant. But they actually have a very good relationship. She’s cute as a button.”

Now that his innocence has been demonstrated, Bradford has hired civil attorney Herbert L. Schmell, who said they are “99.9 percent sure” that they will be filing a civil suit against the city.

“Based upon what I see, there was no probable cause to arrest him at the time,” Schmell said. “And to put him in Rikers for 12 or 13 days. … We’re seeking money damages. He’s shook up.”

Soupçonné d’agression avec arme à feu, cela faisait 12 jours que Rodney Bradford, 19 ans, était en prison. Mais un message qu’il avait envoyé sur facebook au moment des faits lui a servi d’alibi. Le jeune homme est libre. D’autres témoignages ont contribué à la libération de R. Bradford mais selon le porte-parole du procureur, le message de Facebook a été déterminant.

“Cela reflète à quel point les sites de socialisation sur internet ont pris de l’importance dans nos vies” a déclaré Robert Reuland, l’avocat du prisonnier.

Il est probable que ce genre d’affaires se répète dans les années qui viennent mais comme le fait remarquer Joseph A. Pollini, professeur de droit à New York, il suffit “d’un nom et d’un mot de passe” pour laisser un message sur Facebook ! Bref, n’importe qui aurait pu, avec ces 2 seuls éléments, se faire passer pour le titulaire du compte…

Choć mogłoby się wydawać, że słowa wydawcy: Elitarny sport, piękne kobiety i brutalna zbrodnia zapowiadają bardziej krwawy Harlequin – na szczęście mamy do czynienia z w miarę ciekawym kryminałem.

Elena WEstes, detektyw znana z innych powieści pisarki wkracza do akcji, rozgrywającej się tym razem w bogatym środowisku socjety Palm Beach. Milionerzy, gracze polo, drogie samochody i piękne kobiety, a wśród nich Irena Markowa, której zmasakrowane ciało Elena znajduje porzucone nad brzegiem kanału.

Zamiast zajmować się tym, co kocha najbardziej – końmi – była policjantka musi mierzyć się z rosyjską mafią, sekretnym Klubem alibi, ale przede wszystkim z własną przeszłością. Kiedy na scenie pojawia się były narzeczony Eleny, który staje się głównym podejrzanym w sprawie morderstwa Iryny, sprawy się komplikują do granic możliwości.

Alibi jest lekkie w swojej formie, co ułatwia dość szybką lekturę. Nie jest nudne – ba – sam pomysł ciekawie wymyślonego morderstwa, w którym pojawiają się poszlaki oraz mocne albi może się podobać. Tami Hoag pisze zgrabnie i choć znana czytelnikom przede wszystkim jako autorka romansów, sprawdza się w miarę jako twórczyni kryminalnych zagadek.

Specyficzny klimat opowieści, w którym miejsca niedookreślenia wypełnimy obrazami z Dynastii czy Mody na Sukces (bo inaczej się nie da ) powinien od razu odrzucać. Tu jednak znowu doskonałe tłumaczenie i zgrabność opowieści, która nie rozbija się na części pierwsze bierze górę i z pewnością dojdziemy do końca.

Pode parecer um tanto difícil de fazer isso, mas esqueça Juventude Transviada e Johnny Guitar. Quando se trata de Nicholas Ray, muito provavelmente o ponto mais alto que o seu cinema alcançou foi com a obra-prima No Silêncio da Noite.  Desprezado pela crítica de seu próprio país e idolatrado por realizadores como Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Wim Wenders e Jim Jarmusch, Ray não influenciou tanta gente à toa:  seus filmes, retratos da própria vida regada à jogatina, bebida, mulheres, cigarros, relacionamentos complicados, brigas com grandes estúdios, convergiam para seu olhar único de mundo – triste, trágico, expressivo até as raias do suportável, capaz de torcer o espectador ao seu estilo estético-narrativo que sempre se preocupou em manter a misé-en-scene, a fotografia e a decupagem atuando juntas com os personagens, quase vivas, alterando a percepção do espectador ao bel-prazer do autor.

Para dar a prova definitiva disso, Ray nos apresenta o rebelde e agressivo roteirista Dixon Steele, que no meio de um bloqueio criativo, é suspeito de ter assassinado uma garota que foi à sua casa e que foi encontrada morta na manhã seguinte. A única testemunha que poderá inocentá-lo é Laurel Gray, sua vizinha da frente, a única pessoa que viu a garota sair desacompanhada da casa dele. Os dois, nessa corrida por provar a inocência do acusado, acabam se envolvendo romanticamente. Porém, pouco a pouco, o temperamento violento e explosivo somado com o comportamento enigmático de Dixon acabam despertando dúvidas se ele cometeu o crime ou não, o que, invariavelmente, vai acabando com o relacionamento de forma irreversível.

Ray distorceu tempo e espaço para nos atingir com um cruzado de direita direto o queixo. A todo momento, ele se serve da estilização dos filmes noir para tecer a narrativa character-driven que reina sobre toda a obra, do início ao fim. A todo momento somos obrigados a contemplar a face angustiada do casal – tanto do medo e raiva do personagem de Bogart, quanto do pesar da dúvida expressado com precisão no rosto de Gloria Grahame.

E não existem limites na fábula de desajuste de Nick. Dixon Steele é o próprio cineasta encarnado, bêbado, raivoso, revoltado com o sistema – não custa lembrar que o próprio Ray foi subjugado durante a perseguição McCarthista aos comunistas a fazer filmes bem menos ousados do que costumava fazer, os famosos filmes de encomenda, para não ser perseguido, torturado e exilado de seu país por causa de suas tendências esquerdistas. E também por seu relacionamento complicado com Gloria Grahame, à época, já divorciados, já que esta não aguentava mais o comportamento abusivo do diretor, em todos os sentidos.

Tudo isso pode parecer curiosidade de revista de fofoca, mas acredito que só serve para fundamentar mais ainda de onde Nick tirou inspiração pra tecer algo tão visceral – e poucos cineastas americanos sabiam mexer com o lado emocional da, digamos assim, coisa, para tocar no espectador de forma irreversível. No Silêncio da Noite nos persegue a todo momento depois de acabar, dada a forma que o autor tratou a história – o amor  pode ser algo lindo, que não precisa de demonstrações óbvias de roteiro de cinema (como comenta um sarcástico Steele a certo ponto da obra), mas ele não resiste ao peso esmagador da dúvida, da indiferença e do abuso. Como dói saber que ninguém é capaz de amar incondicionalmente, e que o tempo corrói tudo. Final mais definitivo pra provar isso, não há, no que pouco importa o crime ser solucionado – já é tarde demais para todo mundo já contaminado pela presença e ausência de coisas tão simples mas tão essenciais no final das contas, como dúvida e confiança.

Se, como o próprio Ray já disse uma vez, o cinema é a melodia do olhar, No Silêncio da Noite é como um disco de Chet Baker: um verdadeiro momento quando beleza e amargura resolveram fazer algo juntas. Tendo-as como musa em plena sintonia, foi quase impossível de errar. Nascia então sua obra-prima, há quase seis décadas nos arrancando lágrimas.

Good thing I don’t need one, if I did I would be in some deep caca poo….I’ve spent all day long digging for the last 15 years of my life….I don’t even remember yesterday, if I wasn’t on here recording my doings I’d be clueless, I sure wish I had a blog/journal that covered the last 15 years. I am not good with dates, birthdays, anniversaries and such…but I am having to come up with wedding dates, divorce dates…ha, guess the jokes on me…love ‘em and leave ‘em…and try to forget everything in between….then here I am looking for DOB’s, Socials….tax returns….I’m sore, brain-dead, cranky and tired….and I’ve yet to locate a couple of years….oh and also DR visits, dates, details…

Anyhoo I will need all of the above tomorrow…sure, no problem…I can do it….

My mother is Ghanaian and my father is from Kano, though my grand mum is half Ghanaian and half Yoruba.

I realized music was or is my calling when I wrote my first 16brs and gave them to my friends to read…even though I wasn’t serious about music knew I had something in me. But now am ready to face and make the best out of it.

Ah!…that’s 1 of the major challenges faced by young artistes today as many of us are still in school…this is part of the reasons why I withdrew from NYU,due to the fact that I was inclined more towards rap than my education that it alarmed a number of people in my family try my best now though to make sure I find a very balanced timetable for everything…I dedicate 3 hours of everyday to writing and some 7 to studying and so far so good… being 1 of the most highly anticipated and respected rappers of my time face a lot of criticism and haterocism and it makes me feel like a success as I must be unique and special to draw such attention…u feel me?…so am cool with all the things that come my way.

6. WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN PART IN SHOWS CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?

Yeah I have taken part in a number of shows…not very major but good shows…last year summer I performed with a group of friends at the concrete rose concert and we tore up the stage, december last year too were a couple of about 3 shows I did around Lagos and a lot of other performances at parties and schools around urban Lagos…looking forward to some other shows in December too so I feel great. Yes I do.haha

7.WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST MOMENT OF YOUR MUSICAL CAREER?

Well I remember this 1 time when I had to perform in front of artistes like modenine, alibi, kel and m.i and after my performance got a standing ovation from all of them including the crowd…when one of them was asked why they stood, he said “because he owned us”…so yeah, that was a great moment for me as a young artiste.

8. OUTSIDE THE MUSIC SCENE WHO IS HYM?

Outside the music scene,…..ummmmm…am almost always 24hours HYM so its almost very impossible to differentiate but my close friend that know both nas and HYM know am a very cool, loud and stubborn boy that likes a laugh…..ha-ha.

9. ARE YOU SINGLE?

I am single yes…but there are a couple of ladies I am interested in at the moment…no names for now…lol.

10. APART FROM MUSIC YOU HAVE ANY OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST?

Yes I do….I love watching sitcoms, swimming and writing poems….oh yeah I play basketball too.

11. DO YOU INTEND GOING INTO MUSIC FULL TIME?

I intend to by Gods graces remain in the music scene till I am about 35…then I’ll practice law. So I pray to reign for about 17 years. God willing.

12. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?

Begging for competition….probably tired of being the best…haha

13.THERE IS A COUPLE OF RAPPERS IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT?

Ah, u know now…am the most commercial lyricist so far, my versatility I must say…I can rap about basically anything.

That most definitely got to be Biggie,em,lil wayne,juelz,talib kweli,common,immortal technik and rakim…that sorta explains my lyrical inclination.listening to biggie gave me the edge I needed to be aggressive and juelz,lyrics

15. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IS LACKING AND CAN FILL THE VOID?

What the Nigerian music industry is lacking is unity.everybody wants to be unique and they do that in the most awkward ways ever no one succeeds without help from somewhere….artistes need to work together more often to give the industry its stir…and the youth should have a voice too…

Umm, I inspire me mostly but sumtymz the beats help…I rap according to my mood mostly though

Yes I have a mix tape called the hymbook coming out in December…gonna be up for download…free. And am also working with a friend on another 1 called pen and pad…I also am going to be working next year with my nigga midnight on some crazy shit…yes baby…we are live!

Stays true to your talent…push it to the limit and always rap it up….ha-ha

In July, photographer Taryn Simon gave a TED talk about her project The Innocents, a  touring exhibit and book of portraits focusing on people wrongly convicted of crimes, mostly through photographic misidentification. Simon’s talk is spectacular; her insight into the use of photographs in criminal investigations is startling and demonstrates a disturbing bias in the way law enforcement officials sometimes steer victims toward identifying their assailants. Simon sums the issue up nicely in the forward of The Innocents:

The criminal justice system had failed to recognize the limitations of relying on photographic images.

Simon notes that memory is malleable– it can easily be influenced (intentionally or unintentionally) by sources other than photography, especially composite sketches and lineups. Take this example Simon presents in her talk:

A woman was raped and presented with a series of photographs from which to identify her attacker. She saw some similarities in the first photo, but couldn’t quite make a positive identification. Days later, she’s presented with another photo array of all new photographs– except that one photo that she had some draw to from the earlier array is repeated in the second array, and a positive identification is made, because the photo replaced the memory, if there ever was an actual memory.”

In many of these cases profiled by Simon, the accused individual had a solid alibi confirmed by multiple witnesses– yet identification by the victim took precedence in the courtroom. In other cases, damning factors beside photographic misidentification work against the wrongfully convicted– such as in the case of Frederick Day, an African-American man who was convicted of rape by an all-white jury, despite an alibi confirmed by thirteen people. Simon’s work, sponsored by The Innocence Project, highlights significant flaws in the criminal justice system that have led many innocent men and woman to long terms of imprisonment, and sometimes even execution.

Who: Tim Durham

Where: skeet shooting, Tulsa, Oklahoma

What: 11 alibi witnesses placed Durham at a skeet-shooting competition at the time of the crime. Served 3.5 years of a 3,220 year sentence for rape and robbery

When: 2002

Who: Charles Irvin Fain

Where: the Snake River in Melba, Idaho, where he allegedly kidnapped, raped, and murdered a young girl walking to school. When it was discovered he was wrongfully convicted, authorities learned that Fain had never even been to the location before.

What: Served 18 years for murder, rape, and kidnapping

When: 2002
