The electronica band Crystal Castles is like a brand, but so are many music groups nowadays. They try and promote an identity that involves what I like to call neo-feminism, a term describing a movement where a woman undertakes the persona and image of a strong, boy-like female — think a bold, angry attitude, accompanied with cropped haircuts and mismatching boyish tees with pencil skirts. Just take a look at lead singer Alice Glass.

It’s almost like a coming-of-age flapper. Same rebellious attitude, same perversion of dress. Seeing women not looking like women sends a confusing signal to the brain of the average women. Why does she look like this? Why do I suddenly want to look like her?

The neo-feminist is an all too common trend I observe on my college campus. Women that look like young boys prance around in leggings and band tees, surrounding themselves with primarily males. It’s almost snobbish. To an outsider, however, the trend is intriguing.

I say: Go get ‘em, bo — I mean girls.

Electronic duo from Toronto. Their music pretty much sounds like a video game. Very distorted and glitchy video game. Even the name Crystal Castles is borrowed from an old Atari game. Ethan Kath produces. Alice Glass provides the vocals. NME named her number one on the “Cool List” in 2008. Right ahead of Jay-Z and Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT. Crystal Castles also released their selt titled debut album in March 2008. Sixteen tracks, and over fifty minutes of 8-bit music. Some people will love it. Others will think it’s annoying ass noise. Even ear piercing at times. Been waiting for them to make a new album. I haven’t heard any news yet. Hopefully in 2010.

Personally, I would prefer an indie girl as I don’t like my gir l to look tougher than me, so the metal chick can be my best buddy with benefits(*wink). An indie girl would make a good girlfriend as she would have a relatively good taste in music, and so I can talk to her all day about music without getting bored. She would then send me a compilation CD she mixed herself with great indie tracks in it for me to listen to it all day. I would too return the love by creating a personal CD mix  for her, and this way we can express our love for each other through music. How romantic.

Anyway, if you are wondering I define indie.

If you listen to rnb, or hip hop, or whatever pop shit like tranny gaga, your a poseur. Many local girls here in Singapore dress indie but when you look into their MP3s, all you find is garbage. A VERY big turnoff, unless you look like Denise Richards. You can then tell me my music sucks, and still share the same bed as me.

Yesterday, to keep a boring train journey from being a painfully boring train journey, I got myself the latest copy of Company magazine. It did the job well, featuring, among other things, their “Top Ten Best Dressed Brits Under 30″.

Whenever I see a list of this sort, I immediately want to make my own version. Partly because I obsessively make lists anyway, and partly because I usually don’t quite agree and feel the need to get my opinion on paper (or in this case, on screen).

Plus, it’s much more productive than sitting and complaining how much you disagree – I’d recommend it to anyone.

However, I have decided not to limit mine to British people. I guess there are just too many FABulous people in the world :-p

So, here you have it, the first top ten of this blog: The Kitty Collar Best Dressed Under 30!

*Katy Perry

With her kitschy, girly and, sometimes food inspired(!), outfits, along with her infectiously catchy music, Miss Perry has fast become one of those Pop Stars It’s Okay To Like.

Katy’s style largely consists of bright dresses, food shaped accessories, Hello Kitty, Tarina Tarantino jewellery and colourful high heels.

Some of her most memorable outfits include a playing cards dress (as seen in the picture), a pink panda dress and a yellow dress covered in musical notes.

*Taylor Momsen

At only 16 years old, actress and musician Taylor Momsen is already (albeit slightly controversially) being hailed by some as a style icon.

It’s no secret that Taylor is heavily inspired by Courtney Love, and this is reflected in her blonde, messy hair, dark eye make-up and red lipstick combination.

As for clothes, Taylor often goes for leather jackets, black boots, long statement necklaces, ripped jeans/leggings, mixed with glam dresses or plaid shirts.

*Doe Deere

It’s fair to say that musician, make-up artist/designer, model and blogger Doe Deere loves colour. She’s not afraid to stand out, and has long been inspiring other people to embrace colour too, through her make-up tutorials (which can be seen on her blog, doedeereblogazine.com) and, more recently, her very bright make-up range Lime Crime.

Classic Doe Deere looks involve bright colours, pretty knee-length skirts, coloured tights and matching bright make-up, while common motifs include unicorns and, of course, deers!

*Alice Glass

Alice Glass is the chaotic frontwoman of Canadian electro band Crystal Castles. Her style is simple, yet makes her look like some kind of punk icon, something I am undeniably jealous of!

Alice can often been seen wearing ripped tights (though the “ripped” part is mainly due to the fact that, while touring, tights rarely remain intact), sneakers, a leather jacket and granny-style pencil skirts (some of which actually did belong to her Grandma).

*Amelia Arsenic

Model, make-up designer and vocalist in cyberpunk band Angelspit, Amelia Arsenic’s style is made up mainly of the colours black, white and red, yet her outfits still stand out and she never looks boring. How does she do it?

Some of Amelia’s staple items are corsets, eye patches, pencil skirts, synthetic hair, gloves and high heels/platform shoes.

It’s also worth mentioning that bold, dramatic make-up is a big part of Amelia’s look, and she has a few tutorials posted on her blog at destroyx.com

*Agyness Deyn

Agyness Deyn is a rarity; a mainstream model who isn’t really that into following fashion. She seems to fear nothing when it comes to what she wears, a quality I can’t help but admire and feel inspired by.

Staples of Agyness’ look include a leather jacket, band t-shirts,mens blazers, flannel shirts, sneakers, lots of different hats, denim jackets and coloured tights, mixed with pretty much anything else you find in the back of your wardrobe :-p

*Zooey Deschanel

Known almost as much for her, often vintage inspired, fashion sense as she is for her roles in various indie films and being the “she” in the band She and Him, Zooey was one of the first people I thought to include inthis list.

Staples of Zooey’s style include vintage dresses (particularly 50’s/60’s), hair bands (especially with bows) and coloured tights.

“It’s an addiction. I love clothes. I like to go down Melrose and look in all the windows and I go to different flea markets. I have lots of costumes. You never know when you’re going to have to dress up like a milkmaid from the 1600s” – Zooey

*Kate Nash

Kate Nash is a lovely British girl, whose music I love. It’s kind of like what I’d imagine a collaboration between Lily Allen and Regina Spektor would sound like. I’d quite like to have a cup of tea with her.

As for her style, it’s a flawless mix of vintage dresses, floral prints and hair bows.  When asked about it by Venus Zine, Kate said: “I focus on dresses, skirts, jackets, jumpers, vintage, T-shirts. I don’t really wear trousers. But then with my figure, I’ve got hips and boobs and a small waist, so if I wear trousers straight down, they don’t see things, I just look big all around. Whereas if I wear a dress and it tucks in at the right place, I just feel more comfortable in it. I used to love ’50s icons when I was growing up, like Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Bissett. I like watching old films; the women always look pretty.”

Joanne Jones has the post ATP blues, kinda like the day after I went to Lilith Fair in the late 1990s, though I would never admit it until now. I’m not the biggest fan of music festivals, but this actually looks like a whole lot of fun…

R: Habréis notado que, últimamente, mencionamos una y otra vez en nuestros posts la palabra “sálvame“. No es ningún tipo de llamada de ayuda post-vacacional y cifrada (no somos tan retorcidos), sino que estamos totalmente flipados con todas las versiones posibles de ese Sálvame con el que Jorge Javier Vázquez ha vuelto a la televisión por la puerta grande después del batacazo final del Tomate. Sea como sea, es inevitable fusionar nuestras neuras con un “si fuera” à la Raffaella Carrà: ¿Qué pasaría si Sálvame invitara a bandas indies? Para ponérselo fácil a los guionistas del programa, hemos hecho un top 10 de espantajos musicales que nos fliparía ver entrevistados por Karmele Marchante o compartiendo backstage con Belén Esteban.

10R. MARILYN MANSON vs NOVA. Nova dice que va a la tele a dejar constancia de todos los pasos de su transformación desde “gordo con las cejas pintadas fan de Tamara” a “travelo versión 2.0 archi enemigo de Yurena“. Nos parece bien, aunque se líe con niños de 12 años. Pero lo que nos parecería mejor es que llevaran a Marilyn Manson al programa para ilustrar todos los pasos de su transformación desde “chalado aficionado a la automutilación y a la grasa de la freidora como gel capilar” hasta “travelo versión 2.0 aficionado al cirujano de Nicole Kidman“. Si pudieran hacer un versus entre Marilyn y Nova, ya sería la repera: competición de a ver quién es más femenina y desagradable a la vez (aunque para esto también deberían invitar a La Veneno) con Lydia Lozano empeñada en que el tiburón de Nova sigue vivo y que ella sabe dónde está.

9E. BLACK LIPS. Salir al escenario y liarla es una. No sabemos bien si por afán de notoriedad, bien porque son así trogloditas, estos chavales quieren elevar a la enésima potencia la esencia del garage rock que predican. La liaron pardísima en NY (tanto que tuvieron que huir por carretera cual Thelma & Louise, pero con chupas en lugar de toreritas jean). Estuvieron a punto de ser detenidos en la India por despelotarse on stage (y tocar la guitarra con el propio manubrio de uno de los componentes) y, no pillando la indirecta, lo repitieron en actuaciones sucesivas. Pero no se contentan con alegrarle la vista al respetable, no. En sus lives hay de todo: orines, vómitos y todo tipo de secreciones de las que no se puede hablar en horario infantil y seguro que este detalle a JJ le pone muy palote.

8R. NEW ORDER / BAD LIEUTENANT. ¿Hay algo más Sálvame! que una banda que nació con un suicidio y que tiene un historial de 20 años de malos rollos? Lo último: cambiarse el nombre (y renovar formación) tras la expulsión definitiva de Peter Hook. Todos sabemos cómo iría la entrevista: en plató, Bernard Sumner haciéndose la digna y flirteando con Jorge Javier e incluso con Kiko de Gran Hermano (que salta a la vista que Barney no debe tener muy buen gusto)… hasta que entra por teléfono Peter Hook y la lían parda sacando a la luz detalles escabrosos de sus últimas conversaciones por Messenger. Si Ian Curtis levantara la cabeza…

7E. PIXIES. Puro tomate indie, el de los Pixies. Porque lo suyo es el trajín a lo Pantoja, que me imagino yo a Frank Black tocando en la última gira y cantando en plan “dientes, dientes, que es lo que les jode“, aunque su caso se acerca más al de las Azúcar Moreno, que una de ellas se enteró de la separación del dúo igual que Felipe González de lo del GAL: por la prensa. Y es que aquella reunión no se la creían ni ellos; por no creer, no consiguieron ni que se la creyera el público. Muchos fueron los fans totalmente disappointed con la tangible falta de química en el escenario. Sus bolos fueron correctitos y poco más. Por todos es sabido la animadversación que los miembros del grupo sentían entre sí, y no han tenido ni la necesidad de ocultarlo en entrevistas por separado. Kim Deal y Frank Black son pura carnaza de Sálvame Deluxe, contando miserias el uno del otro por separado y por fascículos.

6E. RIHANNA. En todo tomateo no puede faltar la presunta víctima de mal trato. Y aunque este tema no sea como para jugar, no me negaréis que si Sálvame! tiene que estar deseando entrevistar a alguna famoseta internacional, esa tiene que ser la cantante de Umbrella. Y así poder preguntarle los prolegómenos, el durante y el después de las leches más comentadas del cuché musical. El hecho de que se rumoreara que ella haría una canción con Chris Brown (aquí veo a Kiko de GH enardecido con este tema), y que este no se decidiera hasta hace bien poco a pedir perdón públicamente, no hace más que añadirle más sustancia a la salsa tomatera. Carmina estaría orgullosa.

5R. MORRISSEY. La Mozz sería como Yurena. La antigua Tamara hizo firmar un contrato al programa según el cuál estaba prohibido hablar de su vida pasada… Y Morrissey seguro que les obligaría a firmar otro prohibiendo muchas (demasiadas) cosas: 1. The Smiths, 2. El tamaño del vinilo que le cubría sus partes en la ya mítica foto de promo de Years of Refusal, 3. Su tendencia a la mano floja, 4. Su tendencia a quitarse la camisa siete veces por concierto y tirarla al público repleta de sudor (¿hay algo más diva?) y, sobre todo, el punto más importante sería el 5. No decir la palabra “gay” a menos de 10 metros de su persna. Lo cierto es que les quedaría poco de lo que hablar. Pero seguro que Mozz le regalaría una camiseta sudada a Jorge Javier… y todos contentos.

4E. PETE DOHERTY. Este es el típico invitado estelar pero que da pereza. Que te lo están vendiendo durante una semana entera con esos vídeos llenos de efectos sonoros y letreros impactantes que solo los montadores del Tomate sabían hacer (y que le pese a quien le pese, han creado escuela -en ningún momento he dicho que buena – en la televisión patria). Y que cuando llega el día y lo desvelan tú dices: Pete Doherty, po fale. Porque una piensa que empezará a soltar esputos por la boca de Kate Moss, ponerla a parir y ofrecer imágenes exclusivas del vertedero, perdón, casa en el que vivian. Pero ni por esas. Pete se sentaría allí, diría que ha entrado en una clínica de rehab, que está limpio, que ahora se corta las uñas y que quiere tocar otra vez con los Libertines al completo. Entrará en directo alguno de los ex miembros de la banda para decir que no, que con Pete no tocan ni de coña porque es un drogota y, tras dos horas de entrevista insulsa e insustancial, cada cual a su casa y a la cama. Pete con el bolsillo lleno, y España entera con arcadas.

3E. COURTNEY LOVE. Ella es la Queen de la polémica. La Belén Esteban del show business. Indudablemente, porque cuando no tiene una, tiene otra. Ha entrado en rehab más veces que Lindsay Lohan y con el mismo éxito. Le tenía envidia del pene a su propio marido (y muchos dicen que por eso mismo se lo cargó). Sus compañeros de banda no la aguantaban (aguanta tú también el ego de la Auf der Maur, que tiene cara de tener la regla los 365 días del año). Hizo carrera en solitario, no se comió un rosco y ahora quiere resucitar al muerto (a Hole, no a Kurt, que para levantar a este habría que recurrir al cementerio de animales de Stephen King y como que no). Si yo fuera JJ Vázquez, la llamaba para el programa, que lo de tener una colaboradora guiri además tiene que dar mucho caché. Ríete tú de la porrera de Carmen Lomana.

2R. LADY GAGA vs LADY CACA. Esto es como los ya míticos Tamara Vs Loli Álvarez: original vs copia, por mucho que la copia tenga mucha más gracia. Que sí, que sabemos que el día en el que Lady GaGa pise el plató de Sálvame se convertiría en algo así como el Día del Orgullo Transexual (y fantoche). Bien pensado, podría ser el mismo día en el que estuvieran invitados Marilyn Manson y Nova. Lo interesante, sin embargo, sería poner a Lady GaGa en el atril explicándole a Karmele las dificultades higiénicas de tener dos aparatos reproductores… mientras Lady CaCa bailotea los politonos sonitonos en primer plano junto a Lydia Lozano. Al final, pelea de gatas. O, con estas cuatro, mejor digamos “pelea de gallos”.

1R. CRYSTAL CASTLES. Está claro que Crystal Castles irían a Sálvame en lo que podríamos bautizar como “Pelea en el barro: yo soy más barriobajero que tú, ¿me entiendes?“: ring de fango con Alice Glass y Belén Esteban en bikini (¿hay algo que queráis ver MENOS en este mundo?). Al fondo, Jorge Javier tirándole los trastos al homeless que hace la música en la banda y que nadie sabe cómo se llama. No hay duda de que ganaría Belén Esteban, pero así al menos disfrutaríamos viendo cómo alguien le parte los piños a la Glass mientras el homeless descubre su lado gayer y se pasa a hacer música disco con mucha pluma pluma gay. Bien para todos.

Men ganske fornøyd med å ikke være syk, så skal jeg ihvertfall ikke ut av døra i dag. Jeg skulle gjerne vært på øya og sett crystal castles, men kanskje jeg får noen til å ringe meg? Crystal castles er litt awesome. Jeg liker egentlig ikke 8-bit og ellers electronica/techno musikk. Men så er det jo sånn at jeg har blitt hekta på Crystal Castles, så det er ikke så grusomt lenger. Jeg liker Crystal Castles. og Alice Glass er heit.

I går var jeg jo på øya, og det var litt fantastisk.

Vi begynte med Johnossi, som var helt på begynelsen. Vi var ganske tidlig inne i Oslo, og vi vandret litt inne i byen før vi stakk til festivalstedet. Johnossi fulgte vi ikke så veldig bra med på, men det gørtes ganske bra ut.

Vi gikk innover til Oslo City for å møte Emma og folka hennes etter vi hadde vimset litt rundt ved alle bodene etc. Det ble ganske varmt utover dagen, i forhold til at det var ganske kaldt ute og på bussen innover.

Lily Allen er fantastisk! Hun er så søt med ‘dialekten’ sin! <3 Hun så litt hangover ut, røyket og drakk vin av halvlitersglass på scena. And then, we all could see her tits!

Hun spilte i nesten en time, og det var oh so awesome å se henne live! <3 Film kommer.. jeg vet ikke når.

Etter det var det mat! Vegetar pizza! Den var litt god, faktisk. Så vi spiste pizza mens vi satt ved ruinene og hørte på Datarock. Vi hadde egentlig tenkt til å stå ganske langt frem – men de var jo utrolig dårlig live. Fa-fa-fa var skuffende, det meste var ganske skuffende. Røde joggedresser er harry!

Jeg spiste sukkerspinn og de andre spiste muffins. Om nom nom. Sukkerspin er nam!

På kvelden var det Enslaved som var fra Bergen. De hadde sånt lys sånn at hvem som helst kunne fått epilepsi. Og de hadde headbanger-fans forran, og.. hele resten av festivalen bak! De avsluttet fredagen rundt elleve, før vi satte oss utenfor og danset og hørte på musikk.
DET VAR KALDT!

Hele dagen var awesome egentlig, selvom selve øyafestivalen ikke er så veldig bra. Vi tok taxi til pappa også var vi innom leiligheten til pappa og lagde kaffe til hjemveien og hentet bilen. Nico var utrolig trøtt – noe som tilsvarer ganske artig. Så turen hjem var ganske underholdene. Og vi spiste panini. (det er konsertmaten min. jeg spiser det alltid før/etter konserter hvis det er i nærheten)

Nå skal jeg lese litt i boken min og rydde. Det blir fort rotete når jeg kommer hjem klokka halv tre og ikke orker å legge på plass noenting.

R: Esto les sonará a los que (no) pudieron “disfrutar” de la actuación de Crystal Castles en la pasada edición del Sónar, hace un par de meses. Allí, la actuación se paró y se reinició como treinta veces arrojando un espectáculo la mar de gracioso: ahora Alice Glass estaba toda flipada en el escenario allí dándolo todo a su forma crusti-cool sin advertir que el público no escuchaba una mierda; ahora sí que se escuchaba la voz pero no la música; ahora ya no nos importaba una mierda si se escuchaba algo… Total, que Crystal Castles empiezan a ser conocidos como la banda que bien podría estar de invitada en el Sálvame Diario (por eso de liarla, porque sentido del humor me da que no tiene mucho). Lo último: actuar los primeros en un festival y conseguir que se cancele el evento justo después de que entrara la policía antidisturbios. Bueno, hay que ser sinceros: no fue culpa de ellos. Del todo. El festival, para empezar, era un poco fuerte: el Los Angeles’ Hard Festival está pensado para ser una macro-rave para 17.000 personas y, además de los Castles, en el cartel habían nombres como Underworld, Tiga o Rye Rye. Ahí queda eso. Suponemos que la gente se empezó a invadir al escenario durante la actuación por dos motivos: 1. Porque el cartel apestaba bastante y 2. Porque la Glass es una petarda y ya cansa. La cuestión es que entre el público había gente como Anthony Keidis de Red Hot Chili Peppers (vaya nivel) y Rick Rubin (bueno, esto sí que es nivel), quienes debieron fliparlo a saco cuando la policía antidisturbios entró en el recinto y empezó a evacuar el lugar amablemente (juas). Sea com sea, seguro que todo es un montaje de Crystal Castles, que a estos les mola más salir en los cotilleos del NME que a Yurena salir en Sálvame (¿os dáis cuenta de que el 80 % de nuestras referencias de este veran van a ir en relación a este programa, verdad?). Dignidad, Crystal Castles, dignidad. Que mejor que os conozcan por hacer música normalita que por hundir festivales.

Versione Sintetica: in una bellissima cornice come Hyde Park un evento tipicamente british come solo i Bur a London possono essere. Great gig!

Versione Estesa: bhe forse non così estesa perchè cosa devi dire quando i Blur ti portano 55.000 persone ad Hyde Park creando quello che a tutti gli effetti in Italia sarebbe un festival, e tra i più grossi, e qua invece capita essere solo un giovedì sera in centro Londra.

Sentiamo i Crystal Castles dove Alice Glass è come sempre sbronzissima e come sempre lo show è lei being trashy (or trashed?), musicalmente ci stava, ma la voce, a parte un pezzo in vocoder, per il resto era da dimenticare.

Un po’ di relax sul prato, passano i Foals passa anche qualche altro gruppo, poi arrivano i Blur, delirio della folla, il palco è gigantesco, come il prato che è comunque strapieno, e ti senti in successione:

Momento brividi: tanti, ma Out Of Time segna un picco, quasi che le lacrime scendono.

Sul concerto c’è poco da dire: sono una grande band, peccato che gli si appiccichi addosso l’etichetta di Brit Pop perchè se è vero che sono indubitabilmente anche quello, per fortuna non sono *solo* quello. Damon Albarn in grande forma tiene il palco, non se la tira, rende partecipe il pubblico.

Musicalmente nulla da dire, perfetti.

E poi sempre e comunque in London, la sera con il tramonto… atmosfera magica, e organizzazione perfetta.

It’s festival time in Europe, and the place to be right now is Spain. Crystal Castles lead singer Alice Glass has reportedly “lost it” on stage at the Sonar festival in Barcelona. After punching either a crowd member or a security guard she then gets back on stage and begins pulling apart the drumkit. Just as the security guard begin to stop her, bandmate Ethan Kath can be seen running at the security guard at full speed. Check the video for yourself…

R: Ayer empezó el Sónar. Sí. Os lo juro. En Barcelona sabemos que ha empezado nuestro festival preferido de electrónica cuando ves a alguien por la calle con la mochila que el evento regala a prensa y artistas. Y ayer yo ya vi a un hombre pululando por el centro con la susodicha cartera (que, por cierto: este año es preciosa), así que: ¡bienvenidos al Sónar! Mañana ya empiezan los actos, pero está claro que los días fuertes van a ser viernes y sábado. A diferencia de lo que hicimos con el Primavera Sound, esta vez no vamos a marcarnos una agenda para cada día. En esta ocasión, y viendo que el punto fuerte del cartel de este año son las divas, vamos a hacer un post de divas y otro de no divas. Y es que hay algo que siempre ha honrado a este festival: su capacidad para presentar el cartel con coherencia, con una o varias ideas por detrás que conglomeren a los artistas en escenas o excusas coyunturales. Y no hay duda de que en esta edición las divas van a brillar con una fuerza especial. Tenemos a aprendices de diva que lo van a dar todo (no os perdáis a GoldieLocks, que en dos meses estará en boca de todos), a divas estrafalarias (segunda oportunidad para Ebony Bones después del bluff en el Primavera Sound), e incluso a divas recalcitrantemente indies (Micachu y Alice Glass, la cantante de Crystal Castles). Nosotros, sin embargo, nos quedamos con la siguiente selección de cuatro divas imprescindibles que no te puedes perder en el Sónar…

E: Fever Ray. Su primer disco en solitario conserva la misma frescura del primer día. Oscuridad recalcitrante, frecuencias bajas y percusiones orientales apuntaladas por la voz de esta mujer enigmática que, de ser un bicho mitológico, sería una sirena trasnochada. Nos mata la curiosidad por ver la puesta en escena de esta propuesta de tintes inquietantes e hipnóticos, pero no tenemos ninguna duda de que será uno de los highlights de la edición de este año, lo mismo que su album homónimo lo va a ser de los discos editados este año. Uno de los platos fuertes del sábado 20, en el Sónar Pub a las 23:45. Abstenerse corazones sensibles y afectados de viajes chungos.

R: Little Boots. Mucho os hemos dado el coñazo con ella… y más que vendrá. Porque, definitivamente (y ahora que Estela ya está también enganchada al disco), podemos afirmar que somos fans. Bueno, fans no: lo que viene después. Y es que no podemos esperar para disfrutar del directo de Victoria Hesketh el viernes 19 en el escenario Sónar Pub a las 12 de la noche. No sabemos si será un set con banda o ella con mil cacharros, pero de lo que estamos seguros es que vamos a bailar a base de bien con su arrebatadora mezcla de electro pop ochentero y ese dance-pop que, lo repetimos una y otra vez, tiene su mayor deudor en el Fever de Kylie Minogue. Cuando de aquí a seis meses Little Boots sea tan inmensa como Lady GaGa (pero en guay), no os podéis permitir decir que os perdisteis esta actuación.

E: Grace Jones. Sigo viendo su vídeo en blanco y negro a là Aphex Twin y sigo pensando que es un fucking horror. Pero no cabe duda de que si existe una diosa de ébano, es ella. Madre casi putativa del disco cantado con voz femenina, le debe parte de su fama a su aspecto andrógino y acojonante. ¿Es un puma? ¿Es un lince? No, es la tía más rara que ha parido la industria musical, con permiso de Björk. Desconocemos los derroteros por los que irá su live, así como la forma física con la que se plantará en el escenario, pero no cabe duda de que su exotismo y misterio intrínseco son un claro valor añadido al cartel. Iremos, veremos, y no sabemos si venceremos, pero valer, valdrá la pena, seguro. El viernes 19 en el SonarClub a las 23:30.

R: La Roux. Aquí empiezo a estar un poco dividido. Lo cierto es que, durante nuestro viaje a Londres, muchas fueron las veces que sonó La Parrús en tiendas y diversos hilos musicales: sinónimo de triunfada a la vista. Pero también es cierto que le he empezado a detectar a esta chiquilla un deje vocal operístico-flipado que ni Christina Aguilera. Por eso, y a la espera de ese álbum de debut que ya debe estar al caer, su actuación a las 17:30 del viernes 19 en el escenario SonarVillage será el mejor termómetro para saber si La Roux se queda en hype de dos canciones… o simplemente va a lanzar un debut de esos de quitar el hipo. Por una vez, no me decido. Lo único que tengo claro es que voy a poner velitas para que no se desate con los gorgoritos.

Crystal Castles gave a blistering electronic performance that meshed together their digital eccentricities and powerful rhythms, producing an overwhelmingly cathartic, organic flux of a dancing crowd surrendering to their wall of sound.

The duo’s name originates after a sky fortress from the Mattel toy series called She-Ra, who was the twin sister of He-Man. The ferocity of vocalist Alice Glass’ raw, borderline-animal screams came across as borderline mythical during their rendition of “Courtship Dating,” giving her supernatural qualities.

The show kicked off with an energetic, strobe-light saturated debut, as Glass slinked onstage and adopted an intimidating, huge stage presence wearing a tube skirt and black button-up top, her eyes thick with black makeup, her trademark jet black bob throbbing to the basslines. She pushed everyone to the brink of epilepsy as she picked up the strobe light, flashed it in the faces of the entire front row as she screamed overtop the myriad of Nintendo sound loops.

Multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath showed off his versatile musicmanship by flaunting his seamless transitions from turntable to synth, with a machine-like exactness, entrenched in the shadows of the stage in his hoodie like some kind of electric Darth Vader.

The most unique thing about Crystal Castles is their talent to create heat, chaos — all the elements of a natural disaster — without burning up in it themselves. Things got a little stagnant when Glass stepped off the stage for about 10 minutes while Kath entreated the crowd to some of the instrumental montages such as “Magic Spells.” When Glass returned, she was smoking a cigarette that she then tossed into the crowd before throwing herself to surf in it.

 Their experimental, new-wave style of electronic music was particularly good during their performance of “Xxzxcuzx Me,” with the image of Kath pounding demonically on his synth while Glass jumped around the stage like a raging lunatic you didn’t want to stare directly at. Crystal Castles is uniquely aggressive, confrontational, and stylish to the point of viewer anxiety: and certainly isn’t for the faint at heart.

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this particular blog (I have two… the other one’s better. Trust me.). I haven’t really been able to figure out what to do with Blog and a Half. It’s been a struggle to write in a different style… one which doesn’t involve a hell of a lot of big, pretentious words used to weed out the uninitiated.

Anyway, I’m drunk. Summer’s finally come to Canada and I’m enjoying a massive bottle of wine. So, I thought I’d update this blog with a new feature. Girls I’d Like to Sleep With. This is the start of something beautiful. And, perhaps, my blog has finally found direction.

Number One on my list is Alice Glass of Crystal Castles. She’s gorgeous, is involved in one of the most exciting music projects of the past few years, and she brings out my 1980s era angst-riven gothic being. Plus, she’s over a decade younger than me and that’s exciting. She looks like an extra in a Romero flick. Also.

Your intrepid bloggers trying the most candied wine of the year.

saignée traveled all the way to Palm Springs and braved three days of scorching heat and ear splitting music to bring you this post on a single California chardonnay. Well, not really (except the scorching heat part), although the wine gives us a good reason to post about the festival.

The wine, cold as it was, was one dimensional, and that dimension was banana flavored. I can’t remember a wine that was so dominated by one thing and one thing only. It was like the melted part of a banana slurpee with a splash of 99 Bananas added for kick. Oddly pleasant, but in no way real wine. Luckily a late night bottle of Marc Ollivier’s cot made an appearance to save the day.

Chris proposed to his lovely girlfriend on friday, and she said yes (the weekend would have been weird if she said no, i think).

The show itself was a rolling success from the time we got there (People Under the Stairs putting down real hip-hop for a mostly indie crowd) to the last strains of Robert Smith over the parking as we walked back exhausted.

Cory’s highlights include Italian DJs Crookers showing all the other hipster acts how it is done, Girl Talk finally making me realize why the hype, Gang Gang Dance surprising the living shit of me, Mastodon tearing a whole into the night, The Presets doing what The Presets do, My Bloody Valentine & Leonard Cohen fulfilling two of my life long must sees by playing again, and seeing Alice Glass of Crystal Castles embarrass herself in front of thousands.

I like Crystal Castles. A lot.

I like music. I mostly like myself (except when I’m hungover). I like females (unless they don’t like beer or fun). Therefore, solely by association, I guess it makes sense that I am quick to fall for female rock starlets who share some of my own physical characteristics. Also, when she started to lend more lead vocals on Sleater-Kinney’s 2005 swan song, The Woods (my favorite album of 2005), I started to notice that she might have pulled her stylings from Elastica’s Justine Frischmann, who of course is also on this list. Also, Brownstein is fucking hilarious, has a noteworthy blog, and now has a mini webshow, ThunderAnt, with SNL cast member and former Trenchmouth drummer, Fred Armisen. Here’s a video from them:

Poor Amy Winehouse has been nominated as Villain Of The Year in the Shockwaves NME Awards for the second year in a row. Named alongside perennial asshats George W Bush (last year’s winner) and Gordon Brown and, this year, fellow mishap attractant Pete Doherty and the bumbling John McCain, Amy’s wayward antics are conceivably right up there with shafting the world economy into an age of wild disequilibrium. It’s a good job she’s clean now that drugs are presumably more of a luxury item in a popstar’s unofficial rider. And as if that wasn’t enough, she’s suffered the ignominy of being forced to defend her title in the Worst Dressed category too, alongside Katy Perry, Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, scruffy Pete and Razorlight’s chief prat Johnny Borrell (put a shirt on, I mean really). Faring slightly better are the nominees for Sexiest Female, which include Paramore’s Hayley Williams, ex-Long Blonde Kate Jackson, The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, Lykke Li and – seemingly out of nowhere – Stephanie Dosen. I guess those shows she did with Massive Attack last year had a real impact. Looking forward to new music from her.

Last year’s NME Cool List chart topper Alice Glass and her band Crystal Castles have the most nominations in categories that actually have something to do with music – Best International Band and Best Dancefloor Filler (‘Courtship Dating’) – while Ladyhawke and Laura Marling get a look in for Best Solo Artist. Other relevant nominees are The Ting Tings (Best Track for ‘That’s Not My Name’) and Britney Spears (Worst Album for Circus), and not forgetting the female drummer in Glasvegas, who are up for two awards.

There’s no mention of Florence & The Machine, already announced as this year’s Critics’ Choice Award winner at the upcoming Brits, but this year’s NME Awards Tour will go with the Flo – as well as Glasvegas, White Lies and Friendly Fires – all around the country from this Thursday.
