AALDEF staff was stranded in outer boroughs and our office was without electricity. “We put out an emergency call for help,” said Shi. “AALDEF staff and volunteers lugged boxes of voting materials down 12 flights of stairs in the dark. We were lucky that Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP donated temporary space with computers and phones for our staff and volunteers. And Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP opened its conference rooms to us. In the end, the Asian American Exit Poll surveyed over 9,000 voters in 14 states on Election Day, the largest multilingual survey of its kind.”
Margaret Fung, AALDEF executive director, said that the three Justice in Action Award recipients had taken courageous stands on some of AALDEF’s current priority issues: securing real immigration reform, expanding diversity, and defending the Voting Rights Act before the U.S. Supreme Court.

David Henry Hwang introduced honoree Jose Antonio Vargas as having “one of the great immigrant stories of our time.” Vargas, an award-winning Filipino American journalist, publicly revealed himself to be an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 New York Times Magazine article. “Immigrant rights are human rights,” said Vargas, who acknowledged the work of AALDEF and civil rights organizations by joking that the reason he “was still here” was that he was “all lawyered up.”
<img src="http://liachang.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/david_henry_hwang_jose_antonio_vargas_photo-by-lia-chang.jpg?w=460&h=307" alt="David Henry Hwang presents Jose Antonio Vargas with his award. The evening came to a close with Rep. Grace Meng introducing civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis with a surprise video of the Congressman dancing “Gangnam-style” for the right to vote.
<img src="http://liachang.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/3-grace_meng_john_lewis_photo-by-lia-chang.jpg?w=460&h=307" alt="Rep. Photo by Lia Chang

“The right to vote is precious, even sacred,” said Congressman Lewis, who, in 1965, led over 600 peaceful protesters in the march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The marchers were attacked by Alabama state troopers in a brutal confrontation known as “Bloody Sunday,” and the senseless cruelty hastened passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “I gave a little blood for the right to vote. But some of my friends gave their lives. We have made too much progress to stop now.”
<img src="http://liachang.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/2-grace_meng_john_lewis_juju_chang_sree_sreenivasan_photo-by-lia-chang.jpg?w=460&h=307" alt="Rep.
The aunt and uncle of San Francisco 49ers tight end Delanie Walker were killed in a car accident Monday shortly after 5:30 a.m. CT, hours after the 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, Louisiana State Police confirmed Wednesday.

Walker’s agent, Vincent Taylor said Alice, 42, and Bryan Young, 54, were staying in a hotel in Baton Rouge and were driving there after spending time with Walker and family members after the game. Taylor said the Youngs pulled over on the side of the highway for an unknown reason when their car was hit from behind.

26 year old Nechole Thomas, seen below, of Houston was the driver that crashed into the Young’s car. The police report states she was traveling at a high rate of speed on I-10 west in St. Charles Parish on the right shoulder when the accident occurred. Both cars caught fire and, after the flames were extinguished, the Youngs were discovered in their vehicle and pronounced dead.

Thomas was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation. Authorities say preliminary toxicology results indicate Thomas tested over the legal blood-alcohol limit of .08%. Drug testing is still pending.

In December 2011, she was charged with a felony in St. Louis for allegedly using the heel of her stiletto to cause significant damage to another person’s car, including causing numerous dents and breaking a TV monitor and DVD player inside the vehicle. She is scheduled to go to trial on April 15.

In pictures Walker posted on Instagram, the Youngs are seen enjoying Super Bowl festivities wearing Mardi Gras-style beads and are also seen with Walker at the 49ers’ practice Saturday.

“Im going to miss y’all but i know they are in a better place.” Walker wrote on his Twitter page.

We have some sad news out of New Orleans. On Monday afternoon, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported a suspected drunk driver had killed two people on I-10 in New Orleans Monday morning. Subsequent reports, including confirmation from his agent indicate the two dead are the aunt and uncle of 49ers tight end Delanie Walker.

Alice and Bryan Young were pulled over on the shoulder of I-10 for unknown reasons when the driver’s car came barreling into their car. The driver was arrested on two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation of a vehicle.

State Police said Nechole Thomas, 26, of Houston, was driving a 2002 Mercedes C230 at a high rate of speed on the right shoulder of westbound elevated I-10 around 5:30 a.m. Monday and smashed into the back of a 2012 Nissan Altima that was stopped on the shoulder for unknown reasons. Thomas was able to escape from her vehicle with minor injuries as both cars began burning.

The Youngs are the parents of Serrano High School (outside Victorville, CA) football player DeAndre Williams. Delanie Walker sent out a picture on Instagram with his aunt and uncle.

May 26, 1647: Alse Young (also cited as Achsah Young or Alice Young) is executed by hanging. She was about 47 years old at the time of her execution. She is believed to have been the wife of John Young, a man with some property to inherit. She had a daughter, but no son, and would have been heir to her husband’s estate. This was apparently enough to make women susceptible to the charge of witchcraft. There is no record remaining about the basis of the charge. There is some speculation of a communicable disease running through the small town of Windsor, Connecticut. Witchcraft became a capital offense in Connecticut in 1642.

The number of witches executed over the centuries is not clearly known. The best guess is between 50,000 and 100,000. Most of these executions took place between 1550 and 1650 although the crime was punished from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Some of the witches were Pagans, but many were not. Most victims were punished by local or community courts and were not tried by an established Church. While executions took place throughout Europe and her colonial properties, there were wide variances in the number of executions. Ireland had only four while most of the deaths occurred in German lands of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Colonial America frenzy culminated in the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692. Between June and September of that year, nineteen men and women were convicted of witchcraft and hanged at Gallows Hill. Another older man was pressed to death after he refused to submit to a trial. Hundreds more were accused of the crime with many of them jailed for months without trials. The hysteria passed and the killings stopped.

Most of those accused of witchcraft over the centuries have been women. Often, after epidemics or natural disasters, a cause was sought out. There needed to be someone to blame. Neither the Catholic nor Protestant churches targeted witches as the cause behind any disasters. Outlying lands where the Catholic Church was the weakest were the location for the most virulent witch hunts, according to Nachman Ben-Yehuda. While being a woman didn’t automatically mean you were accused of witchcraft, about three-fourths of those accused were women. Most confessions came after horrific torture. Sadly, witch hunts still continue on a limited basis in some Third World countries.

All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman. … What else is woman but a foe to friendship, an unescapable punishment, a necessary evil, a natural temptation, a desirable calamity, domestic danger, a delectable detriment, an evil nature, painted with fair colours. – from The Hammer of Witches

Its [The Hammer of Witches] enormous influence was practically guaranteed, owing not only to its authoritative appearance but also to its extremely wide distribution. – Nachman Ben-Yehuda

The medieval conception of women shares much with the corresponding medieval conception of Jews. – Steven Katz

After the terrible devastation caused by the Black Death [bubonic plague] (1347-1349), these rumors increased in intensity and focused primarily on witches and ‘plague-spreaders.’ – Jenny Gibbons

About a year ago, teacher and musician Alice Young was diagnosed with appendix cancer. She was referred to Dr. Armando Sardi, a surgical oncologist at Mercy Medical Center who specializes in abdominal cancers and who operated on Alice using a relatively new and unusual surgical technique in which liquid chemotherapy is poured directly into the abdomen during surgery. Took my dear friend Alice Young, in Fernie from Shawnigan Lake, on Saturday night to Bulldogs after a delicious late dinner at Yama Goya, where I exposed her to Fernie’s nightlife. The best parts of the night were watching Winter’s Son, local rock band, and D.O.A., the 30 some year old punk band from Vancouver, play to a packed bar. My earplugs were from my regular supplier, thanks Amy and Ronan, and the guy caressing, pulling his best moves on the speaker, was in heaven. It was quite charming to see love in the air – t’is springtime! It was a night, a night Alice will not easily forget.
