2. WE HATE your first sentence. “Thanksgiving is a devastating time of year for vegans.” No it’s not. It’s vegans’ favorite time of year, because it’s the only time that social customs force the rest of us to put up with your tired animal rights rants during an entire meal.

3. WE HATE your “Gentle Thanksgiving” recipe guide with a menu suggestion from Alicia Silverstone. Actually, we hate that Alicia Silverstone is your go-to celebrity. Every vegan we’ve ever met cites Alicia Silverstone as a vegan. Is that all you’ve got?

But, we will give Alicia Silverstone credit. She’s such a vegan, she’s refused to be in movies that contain any animals, depictions of animals, or mentions of animals. To be on the safe side, she’s refused to be in any movies.

4. WE HATE tofurky. If you don’t want it, don’t want it.

Here are some other ideas for people to want when they can’t want what they want:

• For Jews: Kosher Krabs
• For virgins: Dildon’ts
• For clowns: Statutory Adults
• For vegans: Friends who Still Want to Hear Your Sermon

5. WE HATE your name dropping. You tell vegans to go to Farm Sanctuary, and get the chance to “hang out with Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Peter Max and Ally Sheedy” (O Alicia, where art thou?). Vegans didn’t become vegans because celebrities became vegans. Vegans became vegans because they have weak teeth. It’s true.

A scientific study produced by a major university revealed that all vegans were born with weak enamel. This causes meat fibers to, in effect, tickle their teeth. We could go further into the study’s findings, but we’ll just cut straight to the conclusion: vegans can’t handle meat. They aren’t tough enough.

Here’s the take-home: vegans are born vegans. That’s why we have no problem with vegan marriage. Remember, we hate your blog, not your lifestyle.

Alicia Silverstone was a sweetheart to put up with my stuttering and awkwardness, then again she had no choice.

Alicia Silverstone is probably, to my knowledge, the first public vegetarian celebrity. Her ‘coming out’ was followed up with sexy advertisements for PETA and other various activist movements for the cause.  Although she may have strayed from the movie-map since Clueless, Alicia has been one of the most active vegetarian celebrity of our time. With a preface by Paul McCartney, Alicia really hit home as she mentions all aspects of being vegetarian in her book as the title reveals: The Kind Diet, a simple guide to feeling great, losing weight, and saving the plant. Her book was released just this past October. She was recently rewarded for her efforts by The Daily Green, being one of the 2009 Heart of Green Award winners. So far the book has received good reviews and is a promising addition to vegetarian/vegan cookbooks.

The managers in most businesses are always looking for ways to become more productive and more profitable. There’s always some procedure being changed or some new tool being used, but these changes are almost always designed to have an immediate and direct impact on short term financial targets. Rarely do managers consider other costs that the business may be incurring. For example, what might the cost-benefit analysis be of addressing employee healthcare proactively rather than reactively? What might the cost-benefit analysis be of addressing not just the workplace environment, but the overall impact of the business on the global environment? Small changes can occasionally make big differences in these areas, but traditional business models don’t train managers to think this way. “Changing a workplace” sounds like a huge task, but like Henry Ford taught the world, when taken in small steps great things can be accomplished.

This video is a excerpt of an interview with Alicia Silverstone in which she speaks about taking her vegan ethics to the workplace. Her points are all well-taken, but her mind is darting all over the place, to the point that I’m not sure if she actually completed more than a handful of sentences. I absolutely understand both the frustrations and the joys she has faced as a vegan in the workplace. It’s disappointing to see your coworkers and the company make decisions that negatively impact personal and environmental health when other options are available. On the other hand, it’s great to share in people’s discovery of healthier, more compassionate alternatives that end up being less expensive too.

The show must go on, even in the dark. Craig Ferguson, host of ‘The Late Late Show,’ kept the cameras rolling and the jokes coming despite a power outage that darkened his studio.Ferguson was interviewing actress Alicia Silverstone when high winds in Los Angeles turned out the power at CBS studios and other parts of the city. (The power goes out at 9:05 in the video)

Katie Barker, show publicist, said the lights started to dim and darkened completely at approximately 5:40 p.m. Both Ferguson and Silverstone were unsure what happened. Show producers gave Ferguson a flashlight and decided to continue taping the live show.

The Scottish-born Ferguson, 47, has hosted ‘The Late Late Show’ since January 2005 and earned an Emmy Award nomination in 2006. Previously, he was best-known for playing Nigel Wick on ‘The Drew Carey Show.’

Silverstone, 33, broke out in a music video for Aerosmith and came to fame after roles in ‘Clueless‘ and ‘Batman & Robin.’

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of attending an event at Powell’s, a local bookstore in Portland. Alicia Silverstone was there promoting her new book, The Kind Diet. Even though Tim and I arrived early, we still entered a very packed room and ended up standing in the back (which was fine by me because I could see perfectly!). Alicia gave a great talk about her book, her journey to veganism, and compassion for all life. The Kind Diet is full of amazing recipes (some with ingredients I have never cooked with before, but am eager to try) and tips for becoming healthier, happier, and more respectful of all animals and the earth. A wide variety of topics are covered in the book and the photography in the recipe section really inspires me. Yay! After the talk, Tim and I met Alicia and she signed our book. Tim got all nervous and asked silly questions, but that’s OK, I kept my cool. Here I am waiting as she signs our copy of the book (yes, I am blurry, too excited perhaps):

Anyways, the title of this post is about cupcakes. I have made a few recipes from The Kind Diet already and one of them is a cupcake recipe. Super simple and mighty yummy. They are made with agave nectar as the sweetener which I love because agave makes cupcakes moist and delicate. Speaking of agave, I have a product review coming up for my next post (a product which was used for these cupcakes and many other fun creations!!!).

Lets start this off by being honest; when i first found out I was going to be audience on “A view from the bay” I had no idea what that was, let alone ever seen the show. Arriving there, on time might I add, I quickly realized that this was the land of excitement, cheering and woohooing. Cheer whenever they would say so and laugh as loud as you could to make yourself heard . If a woohoo snuck in there as well; even better. And smile! If you missed on the two first ones than at least have a smile across face in case the cameras would cath you and you would get your 5 seconds of fame. I did my job, I kept up the smiling although throughout the show i couldnt help noticing the hunger sneaking up, slightly distracting me. The Ahi Tuna dish in the food segment did not make it better, in fact it made it worse. To top the whole thing off, they brought out Alicia Silverstone, who will always be Clueless Cher to me, to talk about her new book “The kind diet”. A book about her life as a vegan so far and how it has changed her life + some yummy recipes that we got a sneak peak of in the kitchen corner of the studio including some chocolat peanutbutter cups, a caesar salad and some tacos. At one point I considered asking for a little tasting of the vegan food as well, but figured this would not be good behavior for an AAU student. I am not one for diets but this looked seriously good, soo good that the minute we got out of there i rushed to buy the book (and as the dork that I am I even got it signed) and try out some of those recipes myself.
So i thank you “A view from the bay” for having me as your audience; you showed me that carpets are on it way in again, taught me the importance of brushing my teeth correctly and made me hungry leading me to buy that book that i still have yet to read.

Last Tuesday our FSH 278 class got to sit in on a taping of “View From the Bay”, a daytime talk show aimed at Bay Area viewers. The experience of being a studio audience was pretty neat, as we were able to see how a show works technically. Apart from the cues and c0mmercial breaks, I was left with an uneasy feeling at the end of the show. Something about daytime talk shows makes me so uncomfortable.

We were first introduced to Spencer and Janelle, who were the quintessential TV hosts you would see in an episode of Family Guy; shit-eating grins, forced laughter, Reader Digest quality jokes, “witty” back-and-forth banter, and they probably had a flask of whiskey hidden underneath their desks.

We were told to applause or laugh at specific times, but the only moments where I found myself contributing was when I was nervously giggling at bizarre moments. One line specifically made me uncomfortable was when Spencer was referencing having a good food palette and said, “my wife appreciates my skilled tongue”. Let the awkwardness ensue.

The show was obviously geared towards a family audience though, having hosts only drinking virgin Mai-Tai’s, teaching children swim lessons, etc… So I guess I understand the more “cheesed” up version of it all.

One redeeming moment was having Alicia Silverstone on the show. She was on to promote her vegan diet book, which is composed of some of her favourite recipes. Personally, I didn’t really care about what she was eating nowadays, I just wanted to know if she still had an acting career.

I was tempted to shout out “As IF” during her segment, but I thought getting kicked out probably wasn’t a good idea.

Walking in to The View from the Bay’s studio was exciting, as this was my first time being a part of a studio audience.  After a young lady gave a brief summary of what our jobs were as the audience (including clapping on cue, and “whooping”), we got a nice little greeting by Spencer Christian and Janelle Wang (the hosts ).  I have always loved Spencer Christian on the show, because he constantly reminds me of my dad!

The first segment they did was Dress Your Man on a Budget with their in-house fashion “expert” Audrey Mansfield.  I picked up one good tip;  If you are taking a man shopping who, like most men, gets tired after just walking in to a store, it’s a good idea to arrive early and pick out a preliminary selection of items for him to try on.  If you have things already picked out and waiting for him in the dressing room, then all he has to do is try them on!

The next segment, which they showed us a live feed of on their monitors, took place on the other side of the bridge, in Emeryville.  Trader Vic’s in Oakland is known for leading the Tiki bar trend.  It’s founder, Victor Bergeron claims to have invented the popular drink, the Mai Tai.  The beverage manager from Trader Vic’s showed how to make one of their famous Mai Tais, using their “secret” recipe (not so secret anymore!).  I was a little upset to hear that a city council member of Oakland declared the Mai Tai as the official drink of Oakland.  Being born and raised here, I can tell you that is total crap!  I have had 4 years of (legal) drinking experience in Oakland bars, and I can’t recall a single time I have ever seen anyone order a Mai Tai! After a few minutes of sulking about the whole Oakland-Mai Tai bullshit, I was brought back to reality by the (to quote Chelsea Handler) “silver fox”, Evan Farmer.  He talked a lot about home decor and sustainability, but I spent most of that segment just staring at Mr. Farmer, instead of listening, since I don’t have a home of my own to make any improvements to.

I found it a little humorous that they brought in the founder of 1-800-DENTIST, Fred Joyal.  [I think he's a big cheez-ball on all of his commercials]  He spent most of his time lecturing about oral health, and making me feel terribly guilty for having avoided the dentist for the past 2 years… I made an appointment the next day!

I think my heart skipped a few beats when I found out that I would be sitting in the same room as Alicia Silverstone!  I grew up on Clueless and have, shamelessly, memorized practically every line.  As a high school freshman, I idolized Silverstone’s character, Cher, and dreamt about what it would be like to be able to walk in her shoes… literally!  But Alicia was not there to talk about Clueless, she was there to promote her new cookbook (really, a way of living), The Kind Diet. And time has definitely been kind to her!

I was instantly amazed by how healthy her skin looked (she doesn’t look a day over 25).  I have lots of respect for her as an animal rights activist, and I have “flirted” with being a Vegetarian and Pescaterian since I was in high school.  She was incredibly positive, and gave off a major Hippie-Bohemian vibe (which I adored).  I completely understand her passion for the lifestyle, but a few times through out the interview, I felt like she was bordering on some sort of brainwashing-obsessive talk.

Keep it real, Alicia!

It’s such a dawg eat dog world out there these days, people assume that taking, killing, and gorging are part of the process of nourishing ourselves. But if you’ve ever pondered the thought: you are what you eat, the substances that you choose to ingest are not only forming your physical self, but your inner self. {If you’re not vegan, please don’t getcha back up here. Being Halloween and a peak emotional time for me, I’ve hit up a few Reese’s lately (although I’m sure if I had a bit more drive to bake, I could concoct something vegan just as good…)}

Alicia Silverstone’s new book: “The Kind Diet” is sort of the antithesis to “Skinny Bitch” while sharing the same knowledge. Getting older doesn’t have to mean getting fat and sick. I always knew that Cher would make it to the top. Now, if she could just make another good movie (instead of this Miss Match crap).Go Girl.

I often get asked about why I went vegan. Most people who choose to adopt a plant-based diet have an “aha!” moment  when they make that switch.  I did too. While I had been interested in the vegan cause (because I didn’t want to contribute to animals suffering) I was never actually able to make the commitment.

That is, until last January when a certain champion for the vegan lifestyle (after all it really IS a lifestyle) changed my life. That person was Ms. Alicia Silverstone. I met Alicia while understudying her in a production of “Time Stands Still” at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. At the time Alicia was putting her book together, The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet, and making all sorts of yummy dishes to be taste-tested. I happily obliged.

During that time I learned that vegan food was delicious and easy to make. Alicia introduced me to a fantastic restaurant in Westwood called Native Foods…. they even had vegan twinkies!!! But she didn’t stop there. ANY question I had regarding health, diet, cosmetics, etc. she not only answered but made a point to check up and see how I was doing. Even more incredible was her interest in helping my boyfriend cure his reactionary arthritis. All of this without judgement or receiving anything back in return.

I’m always torn when telling people the role that Alicia has played in my life. The last thing I want to do is sound like I’m name-dropping or trying to coat-tail on her success. But the truth is, I think she is such an AMAZING champion for the cause that I want to give credit where credit is due.

Someone said to me recently that “everyone should just take care of themselves and mind their own business. One person can’t really make a difference.” Truth be told, I used to feel that way deep down as well. Not anymore. Not now that I’ve seen how one person can make such an impact on another’s life- not to mention the lives of the animals and the world around us.

Lest you think I’m exaggerating about how my life was COMPLETELY changed by adopting a vegan life-style I’ll give you a few of the highlights:

1. I have not been sick once since going vegan. No cold. No flu. No allergies.
2. My skin has cleared up and become softer and smoother.
3. My body has become more toned…. even with less exercise
4. I literally FEEL lighter.
5. I have no digestive issues anymore.
6. I am way less irritable and anxious.
7. I truly feel a sense of connectedness to the world around me.
8. I cook. AND I enjoy it. This is a miracle in and of itself.
9. I quit working in the restaurant industry. And started working as Holistic Health and Wellness Coach.
10. I met the lovely Victoria Moran at her (vegan) book-signing event. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor.
11. My boyfriend is COMPLETELY CURED of his reactionary arthritis. A disease that debilitated him. That forced him to take medication that was shutting down his kidneys. That made it hard for him to get out of bed, let alone any physical exercise. Three months after going vegan we decided to go for a run. We ran for 11 miles.
12. Going veg made us feel incredibly close to animals. We adopted a dog from the ASPCA who had rescued her from a euthanize list. Just writing that makes me tear up. I can’t imagine loving anything more than that dog.
13. I have been told numerous times by peers that I’m not the same person I was a year ago. That I now radiate kindness and joy and peace. I’m not trying to sound hippie-dippie or monk-like but I have to agree. Not having toxic sludge running through my body is pretty freaking fantastic.

I could go on and on but I feel like you get the picture. If anyone reading this has any questions about adopting a plant-based diet I am more than happy to help in any way I can.  Kindness is contagious. And it can start with your plate.

This past September, staff reporter Tandelayo Breckenridge sat down with Captain Planet (Ret.) during the 2009 Pennsylvania Eco Career Fair to discuss his views on the environment, his legacy, and his retirement.

TRANSCRIPT

TB: Welcome, Captain, thank you for joining us today.

CP: My pleasure, Tandy. Now where are you from that they make reporters who look like you? [laughs] Have you ever done any modeling? You should. I’m actually something of a photographer…

TB: Um, I’m from Canada. Now Captain–

CP: Please, call me Barry.

TB: OK…Barry. Barry, I understand that you have been retired now for several years, but many young North Americans remember you as a champion of the environment, a passionate advocate for progressive action to address climate change. I understand that you’ve written a book, and we’ll get to that in a moment, but first maybe you could tell us a little bit about what you’ve been up to as of late. How are you finding retired life?

CP: Well, Tandy, I divide my time between my condo here in Pittsburgh, and a time-share I have down in Cancun. I like getting some rays. I like broiling down by the pool. You know, plus, let’s be honest, that Mexican pussy tastes damn fine after months of frigid American tang, and you can basically bend ‘em over for twelve pesos and… [unintelligible]. That’s pretty much it…I mean…I keep busy.

TB: Right…um…right….

TB: Sorry, you can’t smoke in here.

CP: Fuck me, since when? Whatever.

TB: Um, so you were saying you’ve been keeping busy?

CP: Well yeah. Got some projects, you know. I mean, about once a month MacGyver will come over and we’ll go up to New York City, check out the titty bars, buy a dance or two, you know, that sort of thing. Sometimes Dave Coulier comes along, sometimes he doesn’t.

TB: I see. [extended silence]

CP: I’m also an avid golfer. Me and Bill Murray hit the links whenever we get a chance.

TB: Really? Cap–, sorry, Barry, that surprises me. Many commentators would point out that using precious urban greenspace for the amusement of predominantly rich, white–or in your case blue–males, while the urban poor have nowhere to build social housing, is a bit unethical, not to mention bad for the environment. As studies have shown–

CP: Hold on. Hold on. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize your name was Captain Fucking Planet. Ohhhhhh. Myyyyy mistake. My bad. My bad. So I guess it’s actually you who has two honorary PhDs in the Environmental Sciences from The DeVry Institute of Technology? Ohhhhhhh. Of course. Of course. What was I thinkinggggg. How stupid of me to make that mistake. I clearly was confused. I’m sorry. No. How dumb of me. Of course. Of course. No. Please, go on.

TB: Ah…Um…So, Barry, things seem to be going well for you now, although I understand that the mid to late 90s were a tough time for you.

CP: Yeah, definitely. Around ‘93, after the show got cancelled, yeah I think it was ‘93, I was dating Alicia Silverstone, snorting lots of coke, you know, it was a tough time, and I mean that bitch was a stone cold jailbait fox, don’t get me wrong, but she would never put out. Chronic blue balls. I had–chronic–blue balls.

TB: Maybe we could get back to–

CP: Then I tried acting. I very briefly in the mid-90s had a walk-on role in a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie of the week, starring Melissa Joan Hart. But I got fired after two days of filming for finger banging an intern at the craft services table. You live, you learn, I guess.

TB: Um.

CP: Anyway, so it was soon after this, around 1995, that I moved to Pittsburgh and got my Real Estate license. I was specializing in those modular homes, you know, those prefab units? Anyway, I also started making appearances at conventions like this one. Used to rake in a nice appearance fee back then, too. Shit. Not like now. Now all they fucking want at these environmental gigs is that cunt Al Gore. Ooh, look at me. I’m Al Fucking Gore. I won a Nobel Prize. I won an Academy Award. I ran for president and actually won. Fuck that cock.

TB: I would have thought you would have supported Al Gore…?

CP: Listen, that assjanitor stole my livelihood. Before him, who else are they gonna book for these enviro gigs? No one. No one. I was the only show in town. Captain Fucking Planet. Now I got nothing. I mean, do you know what my pension is on Captain’s pay? What a joke! I mean, never mind the fact that I should have made Admiral by now, at least. Admiral Planet. Fuck. Then the subprime mortgage crisis hits, so my real estate business goes in the shitter. So here I am. Back doing these things. Whenever Al Fucking Gore isn’t available.

TB: Let’s switch gears a bit. Tell me about the Planeteers. Have you all kept in touch?

CP: Well for the most part. I mean, Wind ended up becoming a total Soviet Hottie. Mmmmhmmm. Man. I tried to bang her when she turned eighteen, but…Anyway, Fire is a hair-dresser now, lives in Ohio, has three kids. Heart got AIDS, and died. I think we all saw that coming. Water…now I can’t remember what Water does, but I know it’s something in finance… Anyway, we all try and get together once a year at a Red Lobster off Interchange 3 south of Buffalo. Of course, he never shows up. Shit.

TB: He?

CP: Fucking Earth. Yeah. Earth, who’s “too busy” to keep in touch. Mr. Messiah. Mr. Hotshot. Mr. “They Gave Me The Nobel Peace Prize For Doing Jack Squat.”

TB: Wait a minute. Earth’s name was Kwame. Are you somehow implying that Earth was actually…a young Barack Obama??

CP: What, you didn’t know? Yeah, even back then, he was the de facto leader of the Planeteers, he was the voice of reason that kept the group in check when the others started losing their faith in a given situation. Gave ‘em hope. I brought the audacity back then, let’s just be clear on that.

TB: But his name was Kwame…?

CP: Sure it was, back then. ‘course, he changed his name later in life, said he didn’t want people to know he was from Kenya, or something like that. I don’t really remember exactly. Anyway.

TB: Unbelievable. Unbelievable. So Glenn Beck was right all along…

CP: Anyway, these days I’m trying to get back into doing these environmental gigs.

TB: Let’s talk about that. I have a quote here, from sixteen years ago. Congressman George Lafayette (D-Arizona), former Chairman of the Congressional Sub-Committee on Environmental Affairs, was quoted in the Washington Post as saying: “Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution, down to zero.” Now that was more than fifteen years ago. And yet I think even you have to admit, Captain, that you have failed to meet this target. What is your response to that?

CP: Listen, Tandy, well first of all those weren’t really “targets,” they were “aspirational goals.” Totally different. Totally different.

TB: Ok. But you can’t deny that at Kyoto, in ‘97, you were the main proponent of a Cap and Trade plan, which as you know, has now been discredited by leading scientists and environmental thinkers, including David Suzuki.

CP: How is Dave? Man, that guy and I used to smoke a shitload of BC Bud back in the 70s. Good guy. GREAT guy. And funnnnnnnny? Man, I never laughed so hard. But listen, listen- just because Cap and Trade turned out to be a bullshit way for politicians to get out of actually doing anything about the environment, doesn’t mean that I can be held responsible for every country except Denmark not making any progress on Global Warming. Say, Honey, you know, I got my Prius out back. Maybe you and I could wrap this up, and–

TB: Captain, how do you feel about the recent success of your former rival, Captain Pollution?

CP: Oh. Him. Well. He had shares in Halliburton, so, you know… so yeah, I heard he did well. I mean, whatever. He’s done well…

TB: Have you been to see him yet on Capitol Hill where he’s established his permanent offices?

CP: No, yeah, you know, I’ve been…busy…really, really busy…

TB: So tell us: what does the future hold for Captain Planet?

CP: Well, Tandy, I will be going on a book tour shortly, talking about my experiences with the Planeteers, my time in rehab, my relationship with Sarah Palin, my battle with bulimia–which I talk about in the book–and just some general reflections on the state of environmental politics today. I’m also in talks to do Dancing with the Stars, although that isn’t confirmed yet, I’m still trying to get a new agent, so, yeah, we’ll see. I may also be in some Quiznos commercials for the 2012-2013 season, so you can watch out for that, they will be featuring a brand new line of subs, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, etc. And I’m working with Justin Timberlake on a new clothing line for the eco-sensitive consumer.

TB: Well, Captain Planet, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with our readers.

CP: Any time. Any time. You know I have a bottle of Sake back at my place that’s begging to be opened, and a hot tub–

No ano de 1997, chegava aos cinemas Batman e Robin, o último produzido no ciclo que se iniciou com Tim Burton em Batman. O longa foi um completo fiasco de bilheteria, mesmo contando com nomes importantes da década como George Clooney (Batman), Chris O’Donnel (Robin) e a linda Alicia Silverstone (Batgirl). Saiu na Mtv americana uma reportagem interessante sobre isso.

Para o chefão da Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, este foi o melhor filme feito sobre quadrinhos. Absurdo? Totalmente, mas ele explica: “Era tão ruim que exigiu uma nova forma de fazer as coisas.”

Feige reinterou que não seria possível acontecer um renascimento de Batman como em TDK, se este longa não tivesse sido feito. Foi através dele que foi possível criar uma atmosfera mais próxima dos quadrinhos como em X-Men, Homem-Aranha, Homem de Ferro (do qual é uma das mentes criativas dos longas) e muitos outros. A declaração veio depois da L.A Times, publicar uma entrevisa falando sobre a carreira do multi-homem do cinema Akiva Goldsman, produtor do longa em que coloca Batman e Robin trabalhando juntos.

Goldsman admitiu na entrevista que houveram falhas no filme. Segundo o próprio, faltaram emoções reais.

Não é bem isso somente que faltou, não. Ficaram diveras lacunas em todos estes filmes que fizeram sobre Batman naquele período. Felizmente nos anos 2000, Batman renasceu com Christopher Nolan, no que se tornariam sucesso de bilheterias, mas também primorosos pela qualidade: Batman Begins e The Dark Knight.
