I thought I would share with you a little project I undertook on Facebook during December. I called it my Advent Calendar of Uncovered Cover Versions. It is repeated here exactly as it appeared daily on my Facebook pages. I hope that my regular Blog readers enjoy it and that you all enjoy a wonderful Christmas and a brilliant 2010

December 1st

OK so the advent calendar is all about uncovering something good each day leading to Christmas right? So Ithought I would try to do something slightly related and try and post a cover version each day until Christmas. Starting today 1st December with Patti Smith’s version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit“

December 2nd

December 2nd of my advent uncovered cover versions project (did you like yesterdays?) Todays is Florence and the Machine with an excellent cover of the Source featuring Candi Staton’s “You Got The Love“…….. enjoy!

December 3rd

and so on to Day 3 of my under the cover versions advent project. The top tune for today is a cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Oops I Did It Again’ by the rather talented Richard Thompson. What do you think of it?

December 4th

Day 4 (December 4th) of the Advent Calender uncovered cover versions project (or obsession) of mine Under the little cardboard flap today you won’t find some cheap and bland chocolate. Instead you will find Jimi Hendrix playing what in my opinion is the greatest cover version of all time. It’s Jimi’s version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” recorded at the Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970 … enjoy!

December 5th

It’s December 5th and here is Day 5 in my advent uncovered cover versions project. This one is a real doozy! It’s Richard Cheese covering the rather spiffing Blink182 song “What’s My Age Again?” I love this one, what do you think?

December 6th

December 6th and day 6 of my Advent oncovered cover versions project. Today it’s the turn of Suzi Quatro with an Elvis classic “All Shook Up” . I chose this one because it is even in the news today. Check the story here

December 7th

It’s December 7th and therefore Day 7 of my Advent uncovered cover versions. Today’s is a bit obvious, but nonetheless a great cover. It’s Jacko’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ as done by the fantastically named Alien Ant Farm

December 8th

It’s December 8th and therfore Day 8 of my Advent Calendar Uncovered Covers project. Today’s was an easy choice really. On the 29th anniversary of his death this is John Lennon with a great cover of Ben E King’s “Stand By Me” I love this song

December 9th

Hello again peeps, it’s the 9th December which brings us to song number 9 in my Advent Calendar uncovered cover versions. Todays is a bit of an indulgent one in that it is a cover of the excellent Pendulum’s “Blood Sugar” by my son Luke’s band Steal The Smile. Enjoy!

December 10th

Hello folks. December 10th and obviously day 10 of my Advent uncovered cover versions project. Todays is one of my favourite songs as covered by my favourite band ever! It’s the Clash with Junior Murvin’s “Police And Thieves“

December 11th

It’s Friday December 11th and therefore it’s Day 11 in the Advent uncovered cover versions project. Today it’s the turn of Me First And The Gimmee Gimmees (and let’s face it no covers project would be complete without them). This is their version of the Olivia Newton John hit written by John Denver “Take Me Home Country Roads” By the way this is NOT a country version!

December 12th

December 12th and halfway through Advent calendar time, so onto Day 12 of my Advent uncovered cover versions project. Today’s is a must have as far as cover versions go. It’s Nouvelle Vague with an excellent cover of the Joy Division classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart“. Enjoy

December 13th

December 13th and the thirteenth cover version of my Advent Uncovered Covers Project. Today’s is one of my most favourite cover versions ever. It’s the late, great Jeff Buckley with a live version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (You may know it as the one that was somewhat massacred by Alexandra Burke last Christmas courtesy of Mr Cowell! This version really is the dog’s testicles though, what do you think?

December 14th

December 14th and strangely enough Day 14 of my uncovered cover versions project. Today’s is sung by someone who in my opinion the greatest female singer ever (very sexy too). Yes it’s Kate Bush with her version of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing“

December 15th

Day 15 in my Advent Calendar of uncovered cover versions. Todays is perhaps one of the strangest. It is the Deep Purple Classic “Smoke On Water” a true guitar shop classic as played by Senor Coconut and his Orchestra. Go on give it a listen, you know you want to

December 16th

Day 16 of the Advent uncovered cover versions project and today is a song that many people often don’t realise is a cover. It’s the Beatles with their excellent version of the Isley Brothers song “Twist And Shout“. Listen to this and you’ll see just how weak Olly Murs version from the X Factor was!

December 17th

It’s already Day 17 in my Advent Calendar Uncovered Cover Versions project. Today’s song is performed by the Section Quartet and it’s a great instrumental orchestral cover of the brilliant Muse song “Time Is Running Out“

December 18th

Day 18 of my Advent uncovered cover versions project and I thought it was about time for a Christmas song. This is a cover of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” for a whole myriad of charities and it features some brilliant bands and artists (well in my opinion) Fucked Up, Tegan & Sarah, Bob Mould, the wonderful Yo La Tengo and many, many more

December 19th

Day 19 of my Advent uncovered cover versions and thanks to the inclement weather I nearly missed this one (but more of that story another day!). Todays song may surprise some of you. It’s Marvin Gaye with “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” which was in fact a cover of the original hit by Gladys Knight. Personally I prefer Marvin’s version!

December 20th

It’s now Day 20 of my Advent Uncovered Cover Versions project. This one is especially for the boys at Chris’ 50th last night (so that’ll be me, Glen, Neil, Phil and obviously Chris! Apologies from Bryan and Keith sadly!) The song goes back to the mid 70’s and was originally done by the Glitter Band. It’s “Let’s Get Together Again as recorded and mixed by the Human League. If you’d like to hear the original here it is

December 21st

And on to Day 21 (that’ll be 21st December then!) in my Advent uncovered cover versions project. Today’s song is the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” as sung by the brilliant Ryan Adams (not Bryan ok!!) Apparently Noel Gallagher thinks that Ryan’s arrangement is even better than his own. For the hell of it here is the link to the Mike Flowers Pops version too!

December 22nd

Day 22 of my Advent Uncovered Cover Versions Project and there will be more Christmas songs included but not today. The selection for December 22nd is the Foo Fighters with a cover of the rather good Wings song “Band On The Run“

December 23rd

Day 23 of my Advent Calendar Uncovered Cover Versions Project, that means just one more day after this! So I decided to make today and tomorrow Christmas songs as the big Chrimbo thingy is upon us. Obviously I was always going to use this one. It’s “Peace On Earth/ Little Drummer Boy” from Bing Crosby and David Bowie

December 24th

It’s Christmas Eve and here it is, the final song in my Advent Calendar Uncovered Cover Versions Project (until next year anyway!) It is a song that originally featured on the Phil Spector Christmas Album from 1963 (Incidentally that album was released the day JFK was killed!) It is “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” originally by Darlene Love and played here by U2. The original song is my favourite Christmas song by a long way. Happy Christmas everyone and I hope that Santa brings you what you wish for Joriginally by Darlene Love and played here by U2.
I want to make one thing clear from the start: This is my hitlist. John, Josh, and Pierre had nothin

I want to make one thing clear from the start: This is my hitlist. John, Josh, and Pierre had nothing to do with it, and I don’t want to sully their reputations or that of the blog as a whole in presenting it. You know what I think about music.

But the following is a list of eight music videos from the Aughts, loosely defined as “my favorites.” I was late to the music video party, not getting MTV until it stopped playing music videos.*

*I mean “getting” there in the sense that I did not have it as a channel on my television. I did understand what MTV was.

If you want to make the case that I don’t “get” music videos, go ahead.

Alien Ant Farm — “Smooth Criminal”

It’s kind of ridiculous that this was the first music video I really liked, especially considering I didn’t understand ANY of the allusions to Michael Jackson videos. Maybe that’s why I liked it: It seemed original and cool. And even though it lost its originality, it’s still cool.

Plus, I find this version of “Smooth Criminal” as a song better than MJ’s, as untenable as that seems.

Johnny Cash — “Hurt”

This would be my pick for the greatest video of the decade. And I know far too little about Johnny Cash to add anything else.

Seabear — “Arms”

There are two types of people in this world: People who find this video irreproachably cute, and people who are heartless. I briefly pushed for spring break in Reykjevk after seeing this, although, some of that had to do with the Icelandic financial crisis, too. (I owe a long overdue hat tip to Emily Collette Wilkinson at The Millions for introducing me to this video, this song, and this band.)

OutKast — “Hey Ya”

My reasons for liking “Hey Ya” are neither original nor enlightening. The video lives up to the song, which is probably the best of the decade, regardless of what John S or Pitchfork says.

Mute Math — “Typical”

Do you realize what is going on? It’s all backwards! Like, they had to learn to sing and play guitar and drums and all backwards! HOW IS YOUR MIND NOT EXPLODING???

Steriogram — “Walkie Talkie Man”

My affinity for this song was short-lived and driven mainly by a similar affinity for MVP Baseball 2004. Nevertheless, it’s hard to describe this video—which despite its use of yarn and not Legos, reminds me of Legos*—as anything except “really cool.”

*And I know the White Stripes did, in fact, use Legos in “Fell in Love with a Girl,” but I still prefer this video because I have a semblance of an idea of what is going on.

Beyonce ft. Shakira — “Beautiful Liar”

Do I really need to go into why this one makes the list? I can’t think of two other artists I would prefer to collaborate in a visual medium than these two. I also like to think that putting the two on the same team, as it were, raised both their games the same way Kobe and LeBron being on the Olympic team did for them.

The fact that they look weirdly alike and that the video itself falls well short of its potential—have you seen “Baby Boy” or “She Wolf”?—only means they should revisit the template sometime next decade.

Robin Sparkles — “Let’s Go to the Mall”

Because ‘80s nostalgia—or making fun of Canada—never get old.

As the winter blues begin to set in and the memories of summer seem like they were decades away, it’s nice to wrap up in front of the fire and listen to a bit of New Found Glory or Blink-182. The pop-punk genre is well known for its bouncy lyrics and frivolous videos that always seem to bring a smile to your face, so without further ado, I bring you my top ten pop-punk videos. In the words of Bowling for Soup: “I think rock n’ roll is really funny when it’s serious.”

As the decade draws to a close, everyone’s minds are on the changing times. Some are concerne

As the decade draws to a close, everyone’s minds are on the changing times. Some are concerned with the economy, healthcare reform, and our education system. While I agree that all of those things are important, I prefer to spend my free time mulling over the more entertaining points in life. In the coming weeks, this blog will bring you the best of the 2000’s, from music to fashion to television and beyond. We’re kicking off the holiday season with one of my favorite topics: one-hit wonders. The following is a list of my personal favorite one-hit wonders throughout the decade; is yours on the list? Leave us a comment with your favorite hitter and quitter over the past 10 years and check back through the end of the month for more BEST OF THE 2000’s.

Among my favorites in the year 2000 were: Aaron Carter (Aaron’s Party), Alice Deejay (Better Off Alone), Baha Men (Who Let The Dogs Out?), BBMak (Back Here), Bloodhound Gang (The Bad Touch), Eiffel 65 (Blue), Hoku (Another Dumb Blonde), Macy Gray (I Try), Nine Days (Story of a Girl), and Wheatus (Teenage Dirtbag). I refuse to pick a winner for this year, so the title gets a two-way split between Macy Gray and Nine Days.

2001 proved to be less fruitful than the dawn of the millenium, but satisfying nonetheless with hits from chart crashers like: Afroman (Because I Got High), Alien Ant Farm (Smooth Criminal), Blu Cantrell (Hit ‘Em Up Style), Crazy Town (Butterfly), and Willa Ford (I Wanna Be Bad). My prize goes to Blu Cantrell; every hits station in the country had that jam on a ten-song rotation.

We hit a lull in 2002 that lasted through 2004 (I blame Bush), so I’m going to combine those three years here. The Calling (Wherever You Will Go), Jimmy Eat World (The Middle), The Ataris (The Boys of Summer), Fountains of Wayne (Stacy’s Mom), Stacie Orrico (More To Life), and Eamon (Fuck It). If you ask me, the winner is clear; Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” was a SMASH and still gets played heavily at house parties across the country.

2005 brought a bevy of songs about the fairer sex. Whether they were kicking ass or falling in love, girls were clearly the favorite topic in songs like: Brooke Valentine (Girlfight), The Click Five (Just The Girl), DHT (Listen To Your Heart), and Howie Day (Collide). One song in particular still gets a fair amount of playtime on my iPod. My high school friends deemed it “my song” that year, two of my favorite reality stars showed up in the video, and those little band boys rocked the swoopy hair before their time: The Click Five’s “Just The Girl“.

Coming back from the mid-decade lull, 2006 brought us a landslide of chart-toppers who then proceeded to drop off the face of the Earth (or, you know, the hits list … whatever). Brooke Hogan featuring Paul Wall (About Us), Daniel Powter (Bad Day), Gnarls Barkley (Crazy), James Blunt (You’re Beautiful), Panic! At The Disco (I Write Sins Not Tragedies), and Saving Jane (Girl Next Door). As much as I would like to bestow this honor upon P!ATD (kisses, Brendon Urie!) or Saving Jane (holding it down in COLUMBUS!), I would have to be a patron of the short bus to not recognize the insane hit-dom of JAMES BLUNT’s “You’re Beautiful“. I believe I took a piss less often than I heard that song in 2006.

If 2005 was all about girls, 2007 was all about yourself as an individual. The artists were letting us know how THEY did things. Some could argue that we agreed, as all three of these songs were undeniable hits; others could make the point that we didn’t agree (since we never wanted to hear from them again). Either way, these songs were all over the airwaves just two short years ago. Baby Boy da Prince (The Way I Live), DOE (The Way I Are), and Ingrid Michaelson (The Way I Am). While I enjoyed all three songs and listen to them still, I have to award Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” and the one-hit wonder of the year, for her use of proper English.

I don’t feel it’s fair to claim any of the hits of 2009 as being “one-hit wonders” until another year or two have passed, as no one can predict whether they’ll come out with anything else, so 2008 will be the last year I consider. The big four last year were: MIA (Paper Planes), Sara Bareilles (Love Song), Shwayze featuring Cisco Adler (Corona and Lime), and Wyclef Jean featuring Akon, Lil Wayne, and Niia (Sweetest Girl). Again, I had a tough time choosing the winner. I personally enjoyed all four songs, so I’m going to make my decision based on my friends’ opinions (keep in mind that 99% of my friends are beefcake boys). According to them, the clear champion is Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song“. I’m as surprised as you are.

After settling on the top 8, I think I almost have to pick a winner. I’ve put a lot of consideration into this and I think the best one-hit wonder of the 2000’s is James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” (for sheer airtime alone), followed closely by Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” and Macy Gray’s “I Try“.

There you have it, folks. Disagree with my winners? Find a hole in my list? Leave a comment below to have YOUR favorite one-hit wonder of the last decade added to this piece.

#100: Alien Ant Farm/ANThology (2000) — Besides the cover of MJ’s ‘Smooth Criminal

#100: Alien Ant Farm/ANThology (2000) — Besides the cover of MJ’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ this album boasted pop gems like ‘Courage,’ ‘Attitude,’ and ‘Happy Death Day.’ The great thing about the record is that it stood out as a cohesive pop rock album on the whole. Something the band couldn’t seem to do on subsequent albums…

#99: The Fratelli’s/Costello Music (2007) — one of the most unabashed fun albums of the decade combining 90’s Brit Pop (a la Oasis and Blur) with Punk (The Clash). The whole album has a swagger to it. Check out choice cuts: ‘Chelsea Dagger,’ and ‘Flathead.’

#98: Blue October/Foiled (2005) — ‘Hate Me’ was the modern rock anthem of the year in 2006, but it was the rest of the album that was the real jem. Heartfelt lyricism from Justin Furstenfeld and a musical backdrop that at times recalled vintage Peter Gabriel, while retaining a Post-Grunge soun…d that worked wonders on album opener ‘You Make Me Smle,’ and ‘Congratulations.’ Completely turned me on to the Houston band’s back catalog and an incredible live show, to boot…

#97: The Offspring/Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008) — I have pretty much all of the Offspring’s back catalog, but Bob Rock has a tremendous ability to reign in a band’s focus as a producer. The band’s humor is intact and Noodles guitarwork still soars through the chug-chug of their true punk power chords. ‘Half-Truism,’ ‘You’re Gonna Go Far Kid,’ and ballad, ‘Fix You,’ are standouts.

#96: John Frusciante/The Empyrean (2009) — Frusciante has already established himself as one of the premier guitarists of the past 20 years, but none more cohesive than effort released earlier this year. A true record for guitar fans from 9+ minute opener ‘Before the Beginning,’ to album single ‘Unreachable,’ and personal favorite ‘Central.’

#95: Ryan Adams/Easy Tiger (2007) — Ryan Adams was one of the most prolific songwriters of the decade, but on 2007’s Easy Tiger, the pop polish seems to come a little easier and his southern rock struck a chord with a wider audience. Can’t miss cuts like ‘Two,’ ‘The Sun Also Sets,’ and ‘I Taught Myself How to Grow Old,’ highlight a full disc of album rock.

#94: Thirty-Six Crazyfists/Bitterness the Star (2002) — I remember Lou Mansdorf telling me to check these guys out when he was still with Roadrunner. I thought ‘Eh, I’ll give it a spin.’ And then…I got hit in the head with a shovel full of bricks. The absolute raw intensity of the band’s op…ening salvo on the world was jaw-shattering to say the least. While it seemed Roadrunner never fully understand what they had, I’ve followed the band since that day. Cathartic music for a troubled mind, at times. I’ll never forget seeing the band open for Mudvayne and One Minute Silence in a barn called Saratoga Winners years ago, meeting Brock and the guitarist and remembering how humble they were at the time. Seemed ironic a band with such power could be humble. Mudvayne could take a lesson. Check out: ‘An Agreement Called Forever,’ ‘Slit Wrist Theory,’ and ‘Left Hand Charity.’

#93: Devildriver/The Last Kind Words (2007) — Album #3 from former Coal Chamber frontman, Dez Fafara, and friends is as hard hitting as they come. A lot of detractors blame Devildriver for copying virtually every form of metal out there. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery a…nd this collection seems short on mimicry. From the opening thrash of ‘Not All Who Wander Are Lost,’ to the European-influenced ‘Horn of Betrayal,’ to the slinky, sludgy ‘ Monsters of the Deep,’ DD fail to disappoint.

#92: Cold/Year of the Spider (2003) — Cold’s most commercially successful album (thanks in no small part to radio’s reception of ‘Stupid Girl,’ co-written by Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo). But it’s Ward and company’s ability to escape typical nu-metal fare forged by Korn and Limp Bizkit, to cut to t…he chase with heartfelt lyricism, and maintain crossover sensibility in a modern rock landscape that would turn it’s back on the band by the time their third album was received in 2005. Fortunately the band is back with original guitarist Terry Balsamo and firing on all cylinders. ‘Suffocate,’ ‘Wasted Years,’ and ‘Sad Happy’ are standouts.

#91: Soulfly/Dark Ages (2005) — as one might notice already in my countdown, I have a penchant for metal. I was never a huge Sepultura fan, but Soulfly have continually ripped my face off, while also appealing to me with a world music/sount american tribal vibe that sometimes comes off as the vaied ‘eyes’ of the hurricanes that are built and swell in each album. 2005’s ‘Dark Ages,’ was a favorite and if memory serves correctly was the first full album with Marck Rizzo (formerly of Ill Nino) in the fold. While ‘Babylon,’ ‘I and I,’ and ‘Frontlines,’ all shred, ‘Innerspirit,’ ‘Riotstarter,’ and ‘Soulfly V’ create amazing tribal and Santana-like vibes. Cool shit.

#90: Doves/Some Cities (2005) — the opening drum beat and jangle of ‘Some Cities,’ will forever, indelibly be etched upon my ears. Despite the fact that my truck ended up in a ditch one snowy day in Vermont as ‘Snowden,’ played in the CD player, I still love the album. Perfect for a Sunday morning. ‘Some Cities,’ ‘Black and White Town,’ and ‘Walk in Fire,’ are personal favorites.

You know how you go to a gay bar to see a famous tranny? You’re not really into the show and the mangina is kinda of an ass everyone wants to wipe and heshe doesn’t even drink and keeps up this annoying ‘love’ rap all the time, but you find that some of the peeps Ladyboy hangs with are pretty cool and you get along well with them. So you don’t really have a great time because it’s not your scene but the night woulda sucked a lot harder than the pansexual if you hadn’t met the hangers on, right? This Is It is kinda like that.

This movie is all about some guy named Michael Jackson, i think. i can’t say i’m familiar with him but i’m pretty sure there was a lot of talk about him dying recently. ‘Course i might be wrong about that because it seems everywhere i go i see some reference to him. Anyway, this Jackson character is a singer and the kind of dancer that if i danced like him in a club, girls would cry from laughing. He looks like a skeleton with body parts glued on him, you know, like Mr Potato Head’s androgynous cousin Mr Celery Stalk Head.

The best parts of this movie were the parts without him. Like at the beginning they interview these dancers that want to try out for MaryJane’s troupe and some of them were so moved they cried. i really appreciate this kind of sincerity, no matter how misdirected it is, and i coulda hung with these people, no problem.

The real revelation of the movie, though, is a 24-year-old Aussie, Orianthi Panagaris, who rocks on lead guitar. This hot blonde is even hotter on the axe, playing the Eddy Van Halen solo form “Beat It” with ease. She started acoustic guitar at 6, electric at 11 and left school four years later to concentrate on her music. Since then she has jammed live with Carlos Santana, played at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and opened for Steve Vai at…15. Here’s a shot of her from her MySpace page:

Jamming With Steve Vai At 19

Don’t see the movie for the concert that never happens, don’t watch it to see how far people will go to humiliate themselves for a frilly toothpick in drag, don’t see it for the pictures of some random little black boy they flash on screen from time to time… If you must see the movie, see it for the two minutes of Orianthi on stage.

Buzz Kills (Watch Out for Spoilers)

Sex: 2½ Shots

2½ shots and it’s all Orianthi. i easily could’ve gone higher here but her screen time is too limited, her solos cut too short and her interview is less than a minute long. What’s up with that?

Before you go any further, you gotta listen to this track off Orianthi’s latest solo album, Believe.

[Press it to Play]

Apart from Orianthi, there was one single solitary dancer that stood out from the crowd. The rest of the dancers were all men. i have a feeling this Michael character prefers it that way.

Here’s Tyne Stecklein:

Hold Me Closer Tyne Dancer

The only other sex in the film was this one scene that cracked Miss Demeanor and me up. Apparently the Queen of Pop was trying out some weird new position because he was prancing around stage complaining that his “auditory ears” had to “adjust” to the fist that was pumping into his earholes. Hey, i couldn’t print it if it weren’t true.

Drink: 0 shots

At first i thought there wasn’t anything alcohol related in the film, then i remembered hearing something about the Mike dude pouring wine in cola cans and calling it “Jesus Juice” before he gave it to the little boys he was putting to bed. Don’t know if this is true or not, but while i don’t condone serving alcohol to kids or putting them to bed, i have no problem with people calling wine “Jesus Juice”. i’m open minded like that.

Rock & Roll: ½ Shot

Orianthi rocks and rocks hard.

Everything else is just noise.

Boring Technical Crap

Directed by: Kenny Ortega

Starring

Orianthi – Herself (Lead Guitar)

Micheal Michael Jefferson The Jeffersons Michael Jordan or Jackson or Something

Bottom Line

Don’t see it. See Orianthi.

Today was probably a very important day for my Running Journal, and half-marathon preparation. It s

Today was probably a very important day for my Running Journal, and half-marathon preparation. It started when I awoke at 4:50 A.M. to howling winds and the sounds of rain. I hate running in the rain, and I was just about set to call off the morning run as a result.

A quick peek outside the window – it doesn’t look like it’s raining. But it sure does look like it could! So I fired up the computer to check the weather. The local radar showed all green. Well that does it! Who wants to go out and get caught in the rain? But, knowing I had you, faithful reader, to account to, and now less than two months until the half-marathon, I decided to check and see if there was any rain in the actual forecast. Turns out, it was just very overcast. No threat of rain. So I laced ‘em up and got on the road.

And of course, that was the right decision. I ran a little slower, intentionally, today in an effort to keep my heart rate in a better place. It worked out well, as I kept it in the zone between 140 and 150 for the entire run. So my time and pace was a little off today, but it is probably more realistic as to what I can expect as these mileage totals get closer and closer to 13.1 miles.

Many of you have told me that finishing is the number one goal. I agree with that, but I’d like to add an asterisk that I’d like to finish without walking. That means keeping my heart rate in check, and really working on conditioning. I think today was progress toward that goal, even if it was a step backward in time.

Weight was better today, which was to be expected. Mondays are good for getting rid of the weekend junk, and between protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, and a salad for dinner, I definitely got back on track.

That’s all I have for today. Now on to the vital statistics:

There’s two main elements to a good cover version- a good song and a band capable of playing it. You get some covers that highlight how poor an artist is by how badly they murder an established classic, and you also get those that show that a band can play well, it’s just that they can’t write any decent music themselves.

I’m not a huge fan of any of the artists below, except for maybe Armand Van Helden, but these covers all offer something slightly different to the originals, and show that the artists actually do have some musical talent – a silver lining if you will to the artists’ bleak, wet, cloudiness.

Comfortably Numb – Scissor Sisters

Smooth Criminal – Alien Ant Farm

Can’t Stand Losing You (Ft. Mika) – Armand Van Helden

This last cover is what I can only describe as being ‘hilarious’, as well as somehow underlining what a good song it is (regardless of what you think of Britney).

OK, so, removing the Preamble entry, this is the 100th post on The Buzz!!

Thank you to everyone who has read, shared, inspired, and commented here. It’s been an absolute thrill to get to know you (or know you better!). I try to provoke discussion, so I definitely appreciate people who tell me I’m wrong!

I gave a lot of thought on what to do for the big 100th post, whether it be a list, a retrospective, etc. As you know, we cover a lot of different ground here, from PR, social media, sports, pop culture and more.

Music, however, is very important to me. I was a bar mitzvah DJ when I was in high school, and transitioned to radio while I was in college.

I’ve always been fascinated with a concept I call “The Soundtrack of My Life.” The jist is, you pick 18 songs that MUST be included in a biopic movie about your life. No other rules apply. Any piece of recorded music is fair game. I made several CDs trying to capture this essence, and every one of them was different. Of course, the 18 songs will change as you have new experiences, are exposed to more music, have more life to cram into 18 tracks, and so on. This IS not a favorite songs list. This is music to be played in your life story. Some of them are included for instrumentals, others for lyrics, and most, hopefully, for both.

I hope you will place your 18 songs in the comments section!

One more thing: Here are my personal favorite posts!

1) The Sports Man-Crush

Without further ado, the 100th Buzz – The Soundtrak of My Life (in no particular order):

NIN band members had a cut on the bus, as well as members of Anthranx, Mastadon & Saxon and the legend Corey Taylor had his head shaved by Gen! Feeder and Alien Ant Farm had interviews upstairs, and the guys from Orange County rocked out to guitar hero on the top deck!

Our Mission to raise money for Charity was a massive success. We have got two beautiful Guitars donated by Epiphone for auction signed and ready to raise money. The first has all four signatures of Metallica band members, and the second is signed by all members of Likin Park, the legend Tony Iommi, Heaven & Hell’s Vinny & Ronnie, Nicko McBrain,Dead by Sunrise’s Ryan, and Frank & Charlie of Anthrax.

After running out of Guitars – we desperately ran around looking for something for other bands to sign. After much searching Tour Supply LTD were awesome enough to donate a beautiful black 24″ drumhead. We can’t thank them enough. This Drumhead was then signed by some of the nicest guys in backstage – the members of Limp Bizkit & Corey Taylor. Thank you guys!

Sorry to everyone that reads my blogs/news posts, last week was pure madness. As some of you may or may not know I’m a big rock/metal music fan so when my girlfriend won us 2 tickets to the very first Sonisphere festival we were over the moon with joy. So im sorry to everyone and I will be posting as normal in the next few days.

Sonisphere Festival 2009

SONISPHERE 2009 REVIEW ~ Knebworth 1st – 2nd August 2009

ARRIVAL – Friday 31st July 2009 – 18:30ish

This is the 3rd festival ive been to in the last 14 months (Download Festival 2008, Download Festival 2009 and Sonisphere 2009) and it didnt disappoint. We arrived on Friday evening by National Express and after a short wait for my friend (who had forgot her ticket and had to commute from London) we finally got the camp set up around 9ish before we scouted out the site. For anyone that has ever been to a Download Festival you will recognise the atmosphere as its pretty similar … 20k+ campers all metal heads just drinking and having fun, no problems just harmless ‘free hugs’, high spirits and ‘Spartans what is your profession’ shouts.

The arena was at most a 10 minute stroll from our campsite (we were the furthest from the arena, closest to entrance) and was opening 24hours a day. Food was around about 50p cheaper than Download Festival but had about the same stands and shops including Monster, Comfy Campers, Hog Roast, Fun Fair, Legal Highs, Guitar Hero : Metallica and of course Domino’s. The stages were viewable at all times but guarded by security during the evenings. In total there was 4 stages with a range from the truly global mega stars to the minnows on the Jagermeister Stage. Bohemia doubled up in the evenings as entertainment with comedy and silent discos, while the 2nd stage turned into the cinema. All in all a nice layout with a wide range of shops and food.

SATURDAY – 1st August 2009 – Alien Ant Farm, Skindred, Bjorn Again (Played Enter Sandman), Bullet for My Valentine, Linkin Park with Dead By Sunrise

After dragging ourselves out of our tents we ventured in to see Alien Ant Farm. Its great to see them re-emerge from the slumber they have been in since the front man disappeared for a side project. AAF had the crowd moving and although it was weird to see the lead man with long hair it was great to see the crowd reaction as they ended with a completely unannounced Smooth Criminal without the expected 10mins of Michael Jackson epitaph. As always Skindred whipped the crowd into a frenzy with fist pumping songs like Trouble, Pressure and finally ending to nothing short of a standing ovation with Nobody… for a band that was performing to less than 100 in Leeds last year at All Hallows Eve its amazing to see Benji rock and animate the thousands in attendance, definitely a highlight to my weekend.

Linkin Park - Sonisphere 2009

Out of pure curiosity we took our place in the crowd for Bjorn Again who before they settled on to the Saturn Stage made sure that we all knew that ‘Metallica invited us to play’ before blasting out classics like Waterloo, Dancing Queen and … Enter Sandman by Metallica as a thank you for the invitation. The crowd all wiggled and finger waggled to the secret pleasure of the ABBA tribute act and everyone seemed to have a good time, including my friend who I’ve always seen as a hardcore metal head. Sadly we missed Bullet for My Valentine as we jostled for position in the crowds waiting on Linkin Park who started with Session with liberal sprinklings of hits like Lying From You, What Ive Done, Somewhere I Belong and Bleed It Out and then … Linkin park left the stage only 1 hour into the set …. ??? and Chester arrived with Dead By Sunrise. This being Chester’s side project it was not accepted readily by the most festival onlookers as they felt this was more abuse of power than ’special guests’. Chester and co played us a ’sample of their debut album’ finally leaving the stage to a less than warm spattering of claps followed by a 10 minute gap of pitch black and bewildered LP fans demanding more of the headline act they had paid to see. Finally they graced us with their presence and ended with New Divide, Faint, and One Step Closer at exactly 1h45mins of a 1h45min time slot including their 10min delayed ‘encore’ and 25min meander into a band people didn’t really warm to. Slightly disappointed.

Saturday Summary - Skindred amazing crowd reaction, Bjorn Again the guilty pleasure and Linkin Park should have stuck to performing as billed and not trying to shill a side act for 25mins.

SUNDAY – 1st August 2009 – Buckcherry, Special Guests – Machine Head, Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica.

It was an early start for us as Buckcherry opened Apollo Stage. This was only the second time I had stumbled across this Aerosmith/Guns and Roses-esk band with the attitude turned up to 11. Another gem hidden in the under card as they banged out fist pumping, foot stomping rock songs that invigorated the early afternoon crowd. This is a band i will be keeping my eyes on in the coming years as they truly have some catchy songs like Next To You and Crazy Bitch. After a bit of shopping, food and snoozing we made our way to the main stage (Apollo) to see the ‘Special Guests’ – Machine Head. There were many rumours of a secret Slipknot set or even Stone Sour but after long lengthy ego stroking Machine Head finally agreed to play the festival they had agreed to do before Limp Bizkit was moved above them in the bill. I must admit im not a Machine Head fan and I doubt I could name a song without the help of set-lists but the crowd, after some initial heckling, did fully welcome the ‘returning heros’.

In a replay from this years Download Festival I lined up to see Limp Bizkit. I have to once gain throw up my hands and admit I was wrong, I was expecting Fred Durst and co to pull the exact same set from earlier in the year but they did mix it up a bit. Fred also graced the stage wearing a … shock horror … BLACK baseball cap, and had fans eating out of their hands with hits such as Break Stuff, My Generation and Take A Look Around. I do feel they perform better in front of larger audience and therefore there was more energy at Download Festival. Nine Inch Nails supposedly playing their very last UK date was another band that I didn’t know much about but the somber calming mood swept over a waiting crowd with them ending on a soul touching version of Hurt, I am honoured to have seen NIN live before they choose to fade into the black.

Metallica - Sonisphere 2009

Once again I had to sacrifice a band to make sure I have a decent view of the headliner and this time it was Avenged Sevenfold. The crowds were treated to pure live genius with Gunslinger, Critical Acclaim and Bat Country. I have promised myself that next time they are on a festival bill I will give them the time they truly deserve. Finally with the sunset and the tension rising the legends of Metallica arrived with a blend of pyros, fireworks, flashing lights and iconic songs. Opening with Blackened the loyal Metallica fans erupted into almost primal roar as the band was able to show why they deserve such a high pedestal to perch on. A full 2 hour set and proper encore with no side acts or special guests showed Linkin Park how you should headline a festival leaving fans beging for more and more. The rock metal messiahs stacked the set-list with classic after classic … Fuel, One, Nothing Else Matters, Master Of Puppets, Cyanide, Enter Sandman, a tribute to Queen with Stone Cold Crazy and ending on Seek & Destroy. With flames almost as high as the stage, fireworks and an impressive light display Metallica signed off Sonisphere 2009 in style.

Sunday Summary – Buckcherry a real find, Machine Head proof that ego > money, Limp Bizkit slightly limp without a red hat, NIN an honour to see, Avenged Sevenfold sorely missed and Metallica cement themselves has high paid festival icons.

Sonisphere Summary – A very good festival in the making, its taken Download Festival years to establish itself with a cult following … Sonisphere might just beat that record. Sonisphere 2009 had many things right and a handful of mistakes but the experience of the previous Download guru Stuart Galbraith has definitely started the Sonisphere Festival on a firm foundation, but Download (for now) is still the benchmark to beat.

Alien Ant Farm Hmmm what can I say about Alien Ant Farm? I gotta admit, not much. I’ll try tho

Alien Ant Farm

Hmmm what can I say about Alien Ant Farm? I gotta admit, not much. I’ll try though:

Formed in the mid 90s Alien Ant Farm comes from southern California. Yeah. Thats pretty much all the history I got on this band.

Well anyways, I saved some of their songs and videos on my itunes and youtube playlists cuz what the hell, I like em!

I dont love them. In fact Im only crazy about 3 songs and crazy is a bit over exaggerated. To me they are just a novelty band.

What’s a novelty band? Well to me, a novelty band is a band that really doesnt have an impact on you, you wouldnt really bother going to see them live, but something about them made you smile if only for a couple of minutes.

The lead singer has a cool voice, the songs are clever. They did a pretty choice cover of Smooth Criminal so thats where they get my respect. However, I wont lie. If I had never seen the videos, I probably would never had bothered getting into them in the first place.

This band is funny! I just think they truly enjoyed singing and making the videos. You watch them and you can tell if you were in a room with these guys you would be cracking up the whole time. The Smooth Criminal video is awesome. The video for Movies is actually better in my opinion. I love the parodies of Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands, and omg, The Late Great Pat “Miyagi” Morita making an appearance was awesome. The video for Glow with the animated appliances was cute too.

Even the songs I didnt like had clever videos. The video for These Days, the band crashed the BET Awards red carpet coverage, an appearance of Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, and uhhh…. something else I cant remember. Either way they were escorted out. It was a pretty cool idea.

Now, thats as far as my admiration for the band goes. Nothing major has happened in a while. They broke up, got back together, possibly broke up again, new band members joined, then originals came back. All this pretty much do to the evil power of David Geffen and the label. (Ugh music labels grrrrr!!!) It all goes with the territory sadly.

Video time! Come on! How can I NOT post the Smooth Criminal video?

So many comments, so little time. (See below*) A couple months ago, I showcased my friend/boss Paul

So many comments, so little time. (See below*)

A couple months ago, I showcased my friend/boss Paul’s top five punk covers of 80’s rock bands, but I feel he missed out on some other fine remakes by focusing solely on the punk versions.

I didn’t and still don’t agree with his number one selection, and although two of his choices made my top ten list, he’s little bit out of touch with the alternative music scene of late. I’m not claiming to be any wunderkind either, but here are ten of my favorite reinventions/redos/remakes/reboots… whatever it is that Hollywood calls them.

Let me know in the comments if I missed any.

10) No Doubt – It’s My Life (original by Talk Talk)
Probably the last good song No Doubt made, and will ever make, and it’s not even their own.

9) Seether – Careless Whisper (original by Wham!)
Cool video. Not sure if it’s official.

Alien Ant Farm – Smooth Criminal (original by Michael Jackson, duh)
Paul put this at #5 of 5. See where I rank it. I think the leader singer’s weirdness in the video puts me off, but the homages to MJ’s life bring me back.

7) HIM - Wicked Game (original by Chris Isaak)
The original is a haunting song. HIM is a haunting band. Win.

6) The Ataris – Boys of Summer (original by Don Henley)
The Ataris once said in an interview I don’t feel like relocating that they wanted to remake this song to point out the creepiness inherent in it. I never noticed it was creepy until they mentioned it, and that made me love both versions more.

5) Nonpoint – In the Air Tonight (original by Phil Collins)
This isn’t really my kind of music (neither version). And the fact that I dig it despite that speaks volumes.

2) Marilyn Manson – Tainted Love (original by Soft Cell)
Who am I kidding? The video sold me. Chyler Leigh, Mia Kirshner, and Jaime Pressly will cancel out Manson every time.

I make no apologies for this. I had a weird story happen over the course of listening to this song, and for that, it gets number one. And now for the comments on the pic at the top of the post:

* COMMENTS
“I don’t know who pulls off the leather better. I’d bet it’s a tie.”
“Is George Michael smelling his armpit?”
“Why does Fred Durst look like one of my uncles now? They even wear the same jacket!”
“Why do I get the feeling these two have awkwardly bumped into each other using the restroom.”
“something-something… at least he’s wearing a glove!”

On July 7th, 2009, Michael Jackson’s Funeral was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Those who were forntunate enough to get a ticket saw amazing performances from Mariah Carey, Trey Lorenz, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, & Jermaine Jackson in tribute to the King of Pop. They also heard the heart warming speeches of Brooke Shields, Rev. Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III, Berry Gordy, Jermaine & Marlon Jackson, Queen Latifah, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, & Smokie Robinson. And let’s not forget Paris Jackson’s words that made the billions that tuned in for the memorial break down and cry. (For those who didn’t cry, DO YOU HAVE A HEART?!)

Rest in Peace Michael, you will be remembered for your brilliance.

As I have posted before, Michael Jackson influenced many artists including the KPopers. Bi (Rain) was one of them. It was however unfortunate for him as he learned the King of Pop died on his birthday, June 25th. Michael inspired many to be all they can be and here are their tributes from over the years:

1TYM

They’re singing Umbrella by Rihanna but if you see closely they’re wearing a picutre of Michael on their clothing. This was shortly after the news of Michael’s death.
