Synthpop is the subgenre of New Wave and Pop where the synthesizer is the dominant sound. Originated during the new wave – late 70s early 80s – and big time reemerged in the mid to late 2000s — which leads us to today’s show. We’re counting down the top 5 leading solo female singer/songwriter synthpop artists who use 80s-style synths and who embody a sort of futuristic, mythical, or generally outlandish fashion and performance style.

Is it just me or does it seem to be getting a little bit quiet on the scene?

For the last few days the celebrities have not been out in droves like they used to.

Well some celebrities still braved the streets to attend benefits, celebrate their birthdays and just have a good time.

Singer Alison Goldfrapp attended the Prada Congo Benefit Party in London on Thursday and she wore this confection of a dress with two-toned nude pumps, a black clutch and a diamond necklace.

I REALLY like this outfit. I love the drama of the dress that was reined in with the colour, I like the on-trend nude shoes and I love how she wore the statement-y necklace under the sheer portion of the dress. J’adore…

Also at the Prada Congo Benefit Party was Julia Restoin-Roitfeld wearing a blue dress with sweetheart neckline, black pumps and what seems to be a black Chanel bag (the chain strap is slightly visible).

I like it. Simple yet sexy (I L.O.V.E. the neckline on that dress). Simple gold bracelets, simple black pumps (Louboutins?) and a simple Chanel bag.

Lindsay Lohan was seen in West Hollywood on her way to celebrate her birthday in a nude Dolce & Gabana (?) dress, with a black leather overcoat and brown heels with metallic detailing.

I usually don’t like anything that Lindsay Lohan is seen in but I like this outfit. A simple yet sexy satin dress with a nice shoe and minimal accessories. I hate the jacket though but I’m sure it is just for function and not fashion. Nice to see Lindsay Lohan stepping it up even if it is only for her birthday.

Rihanna was also seen visiting Phillipe Chow’s restaurant for dinner with friends and she wore this white sleeveless blazer, with black torn pants, some interesting boots and A-Morir by Kerin Rose shades.

I’m on the fence with this look. While I like the blazer and glasses I’m not too sure about the pants (they look too homemade) and definitely don’t like the heels.

What do you think? Who are your hits and misses?

I’ve been holding on to this picture of Alison Goldfrapp for a few weeks now, idly clicking it open from my desktop every once in awhile to soak up some of her shy, retro glamour.

'Ello, govenah.

I’ve always thought Goldfrapp should sing the next James Bond theme song. She has that dreamy, lounge singer appeal with some theatrical turns in the melodies that make them feel like movie soundtracks. Soaring. Very sexy. I usually have at least one of her albums in rotation. Listen to this song and tell me you don’t agree.

Should probably install a Goldfrapp-only ipod with overhead speaker system in the closet. I can’t imagine any bad outfits coming out of listening to her ethereal sighing of “Black Cherry.”

Dear bands,

Sending friend requests on MySpace actually does work! Here’s a nice little ditty from a pretty sweet band out of London, Brighton & Melbourne according to their MySpace. They are called Coco Electrick and their brand of electronic pop is sure to turn a few heads. Their recently released record Army Behind The Sun is out now and I’ll be sure to track down a copy if the songs on their MySpace page are any indication. The Goldfrapp influence is readily apparent which is fine by me as I heart Alison Goldfrapp but that by no means is to be taken as an indictment of CE. They have a charm all their own and hopefully very soon they’ll have their shot at international acclaim. In the meantime, enjoy the Ju.Do remix of Pussyfooter.

“You’re my favorite moment, you’re my Saturday.”

Inspired by Kasia’s fine musical taste in yesterday’s post, today I want to share with you just a little bit of the sexy sounds and lusty beauty of one Alison Goldfrapp (and friend):

Miss Goldfrapp, who in conjunction with a man named Will Gregory, make up the ambient/electropop/folktronica (I swear I made that up in a bar conversation 10 years ago to impress a girl)/electroclash/synthpop/triphip (obviously you can blame Wikipedia for all of this) group that’s simply and brilliantly titled Goldfrapp. Nice, huh? This is the song playing at the very end of Kasia’s video:

“It’s called “Number 1,” and you’ve probably heard it before. Probably in a Gap, or in a Starbucks, who knows. You’ve probably heard of Goldfrapp before too, unless you’re against most forms of sexy music. I mean, you’ve definitely heard of them if you ever saw Hard Candy, in which they were an actual plot point of the movie.

True fans of the above genres will tell you that there’s much, much better artists than Goldfrapp in the business, and they’re right, but my God, isn’t a Goldfrapp a lovely package? Lush, beautiful songs with a dynamic, sexy voice and a singer that looks like a living incarnation of erotic 1970s dreams exploding out of your head. Or is that just my head? Or is that Goldfrapp’s “Lovely Head,” I wonder?

That’s “Ride A White Horse,” which you can take a metaphor for cocaine, certainly, or you can just take it as a funky, sexy song with an incredibly hot video. I choose to do both, thank you very much.

Regardless of the criticism of Goldfrapp, and there’s been a lot, say whatever you will about their music (and you’ll notice I’m less into justifying this group to you right now, or delving into their substance, when I can deliver unto you their very special spectacle), but they do what they do…

…quite nicely. Sin Titulo is a fan. Here’s the first song I ever heard by them a great many years ago, entitled “Pilots (On A Star),” a lovely candidate for a Bond song sound if I ever heard one, and here’s an incredibly beautiful song called “A&E.” And this…

…is “Strict Machine,” a song called “a future S&M club anthem if ever there was one,” according to PopMatters, and which to me, sounds like red hot sex filtered through a machine in a club to a brilliantly arousing array of lights with sultry synth just pulsating all over the place.

That’s “Ooh La La,” and as I watch these videos, I’m reminded of not only how sexy the music/general aesthetic of the group is, but how much fun too. This is how I wish my dreams were, just more drippingly hot. I think I’ll leave that as my final statement on Goldfrapp.

Nestled between Oakland and San Francisco is a small man made island built for the World’s Fai

Nestled between Oakland and San Francisco is a small man made island built for the World’s Fair in 1940. Being that there’s less than 1,500 residents, it’s the perfect site for a music festival since there’s no one to disturb. With two stages, no overlapping sets and attendance of 10,000 it was a great setup for people that wanted to enjoy music without the big festival hassle. The highlights of the day was Antibalas‘ high energy Fela like funk, Foals, Hot Chip and TV on the Radio.

I arrived to catch Chester French and spent most of my time scratching my head. The singer introduced one of the songs stating that it was about groupies. The hook was,”You can be my Puerto Rican Pamela Lee.” How much longer until TV on the Radio?

San Francisco by way of Brooklyn Aesop Rock was up next and the crowd treated him like family throwing their arms up at his frequent requests. They played a lean set that featured their DJ Big Wiz putting on a clinic towards the end.

Brooklyn’s Antibalas followed by opening with a sped up version of Bob Marley’s “Rat Race.” They didn’t stop the groove and made use of every second during their 45 minute set. Every member on stage had a massive grin throughout their set. They could have played for 4 hours and not broken a sweat.

The sleeper band of the weekend that blew me away was the Foals, they only had 30 minutes but I’m sure every member in the crowd was wanting more by the end. I don’t even know of any similar bands that I can compare them too, all I can say is they’re poised for greatness and won’t be playing second stages for much longer. Even with a solar power outage, they couldn’t stop playing. The drummer broke into a beat that got the other band members involved in a mini-percussion jam until power was restored. On a side note: to whomever is in charge of the solar panels next year, please aim the panels TOWARDS the sun, not away. Thank You.

Hot Chip arrived on stage to an anxious crowd and quickly broke into the multi-textured sound that’s impossible to classify. While they may be the reigning kings of the remix, they’re also a force to reckon with live.

Amon Tobin and Mike Relm sets were sandwiched around Hot Chip and Goldrapp. Amon Tobin’s set was built around ambient textures instead of beats, which fit the SF crowd perfectly. Although DJ’s are big draw these days, it’s hard for a performer to come off sincere if they’re staring at their laptop for most of their set. The highlight of Mike Relm’s set was breaking into Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name of” then segueing into One Day as A Lion’s “Wild International.”

Goldfrapp took the stage in all white outfits as the sun set over San Francisco. With her hair and dress flying everywhere Alison Goldfrapp pranced the stage barefoot while loving every minute of it. Their set included all their hits and a near perfect mix of all the musicians on stage. There wasn’t any stage banter. Goldfrapp came there to play and the audience was there to listen and dance.

Touring behind their amazing new album, “Dear, Science”, TV on the Radio came on stage as darkness set. The light show accompanied their visual compositions, perfectly setting the table for a flooring performance. Hailing from what used to be Williamsburgh, Brooklyn they were backed by their neighbors, the horn section from Antibalas. Plenty of bands carry the “art rock” card these days but TVOTR is the genuine article. They incorporate so many genres of music within each song and their harmonies are surreal live. Sometimes bands can’t pull off their studio compositions live but TVOTR takes it to a another level, they are truly a phenomenal live band. Pardon for the lack of a full band shot but I had to put the camera down, it was just too good to not stand there and listen.

You know what? I thought that writing about Goldfrapp’s concert last night would be a lot easi

You know what? I thought that writing about Goldfrapp’s concert last night would be a lot easier than I am actually finding it. I had a blast, and I’m quite sure that although more than one person was upset that she didn’t play “Ride a White Horse” (because they told me, ha), everyone enjoyed themselves. The crowd was pumped up, ecstatic really, and I found myself dancing and singing along pretty much the entire show. Alison Goldfrapp, at one point, stated that she was nervous, but she didn’t need to be, because her and her band knocked it right out of the park. Her vocals are amazing; she hit every note, high and low, and the energy of her and her bandmates on stage was fantastic. I love a real artist, and Alison Goldfrapp is it. I know I’m biased, but really it is incredibly refreshing to have someone get on stage and sing. It’s all lip synching and vodocoders these days, so I am absolutely blown away by the truly professional and beautiful quality of Alison’s singing.

The only downside to this show was the one time when a girl in the crowd (absolutely sky-high on something) decided to smash into, I mean dance, next to ____ and myself. I had asked the universe for some entertainment earlier while we were waiting an hour and a half for Goldfrapp to start (we had no idea that the opening act wouldn’t even come on until 9:30-the doors opened at 8pm, and we got there ~8:45), and I had stated that a person sky-high on ecstasy flailing to the muzak that was playing on the PA system prior to the show would be suitable. So she arrived in our lives a little bit late. We were both distracted from the performance for about a song and a half (bad), until we both looked at each other and burst out in laughter (all good again). I should be more careful what I ask for.

Anyways, it was even more amusing because at one point she wanted us to help her and her boyfriend shove up to the front (I wasn’t really cool with this-I had a decent spot), and in her attempt to push me forward she put her hand into my armpit for about a minute. I’m not going to lie, halfway through a show dancing, and in a hot crowd of people my armpits were a bit sweaty, and all I could think is “Your hand is in my sweaty armpit…why aren’t you removing it? Does she realize where her hand is? Of course she does…Her hand is in my armpit. Why isn’t she removing it?” So I guess in the end, I did find her suitably entertaining; I’m certainly laughing now. I wonder if she’ll remember anything of the show…she tried to make out with ____, too (Side note: ____ was accosted by about 3 straight women trying to kiss her last night; I guess it’s all that animal magnetism she’s got).

So verdict for the show minus one stoned chick: Absolutely brilliant show! Goldfrapp live is certainly an experience that any fan of her music would enjoy thoroughly (and probably an excellent introduction to it for those not yet blessed with the liking). Great vocals, solid performances from all of the back up band, and a lively performance style make for an excellent concert. The Commodore show sold out, and when it was all said and done the audience cheered for a good 5 minutes straight after the last encore of the night; and from the look of it from when they were onstage, I am pretty sure that Goldfrapp and her band had as much fun playing as we all did listening to them perform.

I would recommend without any hesitation that, if possible, you see Goldfrapp live. They are amazing, amazing, amazing. Here is the set list for their Seventh Tree Tour:

i’m usually pretty up on the latest and greatest in the music world, but somehow, in the cours

i’m usually pretty up on the latest and greatest in the music world, but somehow, in the course that my life has taken in the last 8 years or so, goldfrapp has managed to sneak by me completely… until now. exactly how this has happened is a mystery to me… what with all the trusted fellow music heads in my life as well as all the music that i myself consume with unhindered regularity. but thanks to my friend and fellow lover of music, erik, goldfrapp has now entered my sphere of awareness, and i’m loving it!

after spending some time digging through their discography, i found that goldfrapp, spearheaded by leader alison goldfrapp, are quite the musical shape-shifters, coming from adventurous new angles with each record they release. in other words, they are “artists”. imagine that.

goldfrapp’s latest album, seventh tree, is a lush and ambient soundscape much akin to something you might hear from frou frou or dido… in fact, it’s patty griffin meets imogen heap. definitely check it out.
