If you haven’t caught these guys in Philly yet or heard them on WXPN with their single “I Just Wanna

If you haven’t caught these guys in Philly yet or heard them on WXPN with their single “I Just Wanna,” more than likely you’ll be hearing more of them in the coming months.

Cousins Pierre Moore (lead vocals/guitar) and Michael Gardener (drums) plus Ryan Lynn (bass) form John the Conqueror, a tight-knit, blues/rock band that has made quite an impression over the past year. Literally, just over the past year – the guys were signed to Alive Naturalsound Records last December. They had only been together for the better part of 2011 before that.

“We did all right for a Philly band, but just the exposure we get through being signed. We’ve gotten reviews in France and in newspapers nowhere near us,” Lynn said.

“We’ve read about 50 or 60 reviews in the past month, only one of them has been negative…they said we’re just ripping off the Black Keys; nothing surprised them of what we did,” Moore said. I’ll be getting to their Black Keys related “issues” shortly.

In October the guys released their first full length album. Heavily influenced by blues musicians that Moore and Gardner grew up with in Jackson, MS, they provide a raw, honest edge that truly sets them apart from other bands. For example, one aspect that they hold themselves accountable for is that every single song is based on a true story; thus, that sincerity, passion, and humor truly unveils itself within each song. It doesn’t matter if they’re jamming hard or slowing things down, there’s so much soul you simply feel throughout the album. I’d say for a debut, this is pretty damn impressive.

Starting with the clapping, foot stomping, old school opening track “I Just Wanna,” you can’t help but let their bluesy roots take you to what’s next. Your expectations are raised when you get to the second track “Southern Boy.” This is such a great song from start to finish – you get a great build up to the chorus with a bluesy riff that Moore and Lynn drive hard, accompanied with Gardner’s booming drums. Once the chorus arrives, it keeps building and building until Moore breaks into a howling, rebel yell. The spirit of unyielding, southern pride comes through like no other. And goddamn, does it sound good.

Andre Williams began a very prolific and creative phase of his life when he finally got off booze and drugs. His intake of various substances was excessive, unrelenting, and dated back to at least the 1960s, when he was working extensively with Ike Turner. Reflecting on his very first drug-and-alcohol-free studio session in 2009, Andre says, “It was traumatic. It was like someone shot me out in space and I woke up on Pluto!”

Andre Williams’ new album Life was recorded this past winter in Detroit, the city where his musical career first began in the 1950s. Andre’s new songs are his latest experiments and explorations outside of the garage-soul bag that he’s often associated with. Produced by Matthew Smith, the album’s sonic palette recalls the work of Norman Whitfield’s Motown productions, ’70s Rolling Stones, Can, Bill Withers, Serge Gainsbourg, as well as Andre’s own doo-wop and funk history.

Life finds Andre in a pretty upbeat mood, whether he’s singing about people being rude and impatient (“But’n”), or laying down a political commentary (“Blame it on Obama”), reciting a children’s bedtime story (“Ty the Fly”), singing a simple love song (“Stuck in the Middle”, “It’s Only You That I Love”), or conjuring a nocturnal fetish-sex-groove (“Heels”).

The album also includes his own definitive rocking version of the standard he wrote and produced for the Five Du-Tones in 1963, “Shake a Tail Feather.” It’s a reminder that Andre Williams is one of the original guys who invented rock n’ roll.

Andre Williams’ Life will be released October 2nd through Alive Naturalsound Records in the following formats: CD, Digital and Black Vinyl, as well as Purple Vinyl (limited to 100) exclusive to mailorders.

John The Conqueror’s self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles

John The Conqueror’s self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly – where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail.

Perhaps what makes John The Conqueror so refreshing, however, is their honest, simple, yet extremely passionate approach to their music. Moore and Gardner have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, although the latter recently switched from bass to drums to make room for Lynn in the line-up in early 2011. Not only is this the first band Lynn has ever officially been in, but frontman Moore (who learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop) had never sang a note in public prior to March of 2011.

Yet listening to this threesome exuberantly tear through these ten expressive, unrestrained tracks proves that, while they may not have a time-tested pedigree together, they perform with a youthful, reckless abandon as channeled through some truly old souls. And, not unlike the mythological African-American folk hero they’re named after, that should be enough to resonate with just about any generation.

John The Conqueror was produced by Pierre Moore and recorded in Philadelphia at Retrocity Studios & Jesse Gimbel’s Basement. The trio will be touring in support of their new LP. Dates to be announced soon.

John The Conqueror will be released October 16th through Alive Naturalsound Records in the following formats: CD, Digital and Black Vinyl, as well as Limited Edition Colored Vinyl exclusive to mailorders.

JOHN THE CONQUEROR TRACK LIST:

1. I Just Wanna
5. Time To Go
6. Say What You Want
7. Come Home With Me

When they’re not touring alongside the Alabama Shakes or appearing in Rolling Stone, Alabama rockers Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires are all kinds of busy touring on their own accord, their debut album, There’s A Bomb In Gilead, out now on Alive Naturalsound Records. Former Dexateens guitarist, Lee Bains is the frontman of the Glory Fires and now that Dexateens is a memory, is plenty busy packing lots of heart and swagger into his new music, which is as rootsy as they come. No Depression writes, “Bains’ bio mentions the conflicting inspirations of church music and punk rock, but he draws most directly from the southern rock and soul of Capricorn Records and Muscle Shoals.” Sounds about right. Tune in and listen for yourself today as Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires pay a visit to WMSE today at 2 p.m. for a live, in-studio performance. Tune in on your radio at 91.7 FM or stream live or in the archives at WMSE.org.

This summer Radio Moscow will be unleashing their own brand of super-heavy, lysergic-laced rock as part an aggressive tour where the Iowa power trio of Parker Griggs, Billy Ellsworth and Lonnie Blanton will be playing virtually every corner of this fine nation later this month and continuing through August. This tour is in support of their well-received third full-length The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz, an album that Rolling Stone proclaimed is “fifty minutes of psyche-rock fireworks…. like spending an evening with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and The Black Keys.”

Joining Radio Moscow on this tour is the Memphis-based band Dirty Streets, whose own mix of proto-punk, soul roots and late ’60s psych-rock should make for one helluvan explosive double-bill.

In other Radio Moscow news, Alive Naturalsound has also recently released Parker Griggs’ debut album 3 & 3 Quarters, which up until now has been previously unreleased. Recorded entirely by Parker Griggs (he plays all the instruments) when he was only 17, this is garage music reminiscent of the Nuggets and Pebbles compilations, with a dash of Killed By Death dropped into the mix.

These guys lay it on you hard. A nice mixture of psychedelic rock and blues, they really know how to lay waste. Think of it this way: What do you get when Jimi Hendrix meets The Black Keys? Radio Moscow of course. Their songs have an uncanny style similarity to those two artists, but I’m not complaining. Rock needs a new face, a revival of the glorious days, a reinvented image of itself. This trio really blasts you back to the past with their heavy guitar licks and rifts coupled with garage-band style drumming. Prepare to be blown out of the water, in a good way.

Who needs a Delorean when you have this band.

Time to name my favorite albums of 2011. 2011 brought us a lot of good stuff by a lot of great bands. 2011 also brought on a lot of surprises from bands that were really unknown until their material was released or well afterwards. Bandcamp played a huge role in music discovery for me. It turned out hundreds of great albums not only released in 2011 but in years past as well. This list, my favorites as well as honorable mentions, is no way a complete list of what was released this year. There is just to much out there that I don’t either have time to get to, never heard of or won’t discover until well after this year is completely over. I know there’s going to be a few surprises. Let it be known that I listened to a LOT of new albums this year and picking my top 20 out of the hundreds was very hard to do.

20. The Sade – Damned Love – (review) I really didn’t know what to expect when this one came across my desk but I needed to check it out. And check it out I did. I was pretty damn impressed that I listened to the album at least 10 times in a row. In my review I stated “The majority of the album is all alchchol fueled hard rock. Throughout my listening of the album I couldn’t help but think that this is what Social Distortion may sound like if they were more rooted in 70′s hard rock as opposed to their punk roots.” Granted it’s been a few months since I’ve listened to it, it still has a strong spot in my top 20.

I love the classic 70′s sound that the band has retained in the album. The album feels as if it came out of the 70′s so those fans of Sabbath, Pentagram, Trouble can rest easy that the sound matches what the band set out to do, something that few bands can do. The great use and mix of hard rock throughout is a great touch too. We may be seeing a resurgence, or a second coming of Black Sabbath and it looks like Devil may be leading that pack.

It’s been a few months now and it’s one of my go to albums when I can’t decide what to listen to. “Cheetah Milque starts off getting right down to business. There’s no slow into or long instrumental, the album gets off on the right foot by getting right into the vocals. From there it doesn’t stop.”

Ian wrote “On first listen, it is impossible to avoid connecting the golden era of Black Sabbath’s first four records to Freedom Hawk’s sound. Of course, that is how you know you are probably in for a kick ass rock record. T.R. Morton’s vocals could easily be a dead ringer for Ozzy at his peak.” Sabbath references aside, there is no way that Black Sabbath, with any lineup (Dio included), could record this album and have it sound as good.

No, I’m not picking this because of his involvement with The Soda Shop. The fact is, before I knew Ian, he submitted a copy of the EP unmastered. The sound was ok but I knew with a little work, it would sound good. About a month or so later I got a finished copy of the EP. It didn’t sound good at all. It sounded great! if you haven’t heard yet you’re really missing out. The fact that this EP is FREE also gives you no excuse not to listen. Lots of good things await The Heavy Company in 2012. You may have heard some rough demos that were posted some time ago and you’ll agree that more kick ass music is on the way.

Henry’s Funeral Shoe was a great discovery for me in 2011. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. The vocals of Donkey Jacket are deep and soulful. The bass and drums are deep and the guitars are raw and powerful. The songs are made up of old style country, rock, and blues and mixes those elements up. This is an easy album to get into and get hooked on. It’s tough for me to find a favorite song on this album as they’re all so good.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats – Blood Lust – I’m not really sure why I never reviewed this one. Probably because when it came out, every other blog and music site was talking about them. Really though, there isn’t anything I could say or add that wasn’t already said about Blood Lust. It’s a great album. All the psych and doom elements throughout are just excellent. There isn’t much on this album that I didn’t like. In fact, I don’t think there was anything I didn’t like. The vocals are mesmerizing, the instruments play to a “can get you high if you listen closely enough” tone. If the government wanted to create some type of mind control device, they could use Blood Lust as a catalyst to get you there. Seriously, this is a kick ass album.

Truth be told, it grew on me right away. I loved the mix of hard rock, stoner rock, some sludgy vocals, blues rock. This is an album that has everything going for it. “You’ll hear the dynamics and range in their sound and how poised these guys are to plant themselves for the long run in this little world we call stoner rock.”

Grifter has been one of my favorite bands since they first allowed their demos and EPs for free download on the old Sludge Swamp. Their sound gets more refined and better sounding with each release. Their self titled debut LP release on Ripple-Music was music to my ears. As I mentioned in my review, the band sounds like they have fun making music and you can tell, the sound is upbeat and enjoyable. Just listen to “Alabama Hotpocket” and “Strip Club.”

I was and still am at a loss for words only to describe the album as “WOW!” It’s heavy, psychedelic and sometimes sludgy. It has a distinct southern hard rock sound to it. It’s mostly instrumental and completely kick ass!

I loved the way they managed to sound a little bit like Black Sabbath and Metallica while sounding nothing like either band at the same time. The 70′s psychedelic doom and glam overtones are captivating, the music is catchy and really, just sounds great. I’ve listened to this album at least 30 times since writing the review and that’s not counting the tracks that came up when I had my music collection come up on shuffle.

Speaking of fire, Rival Sons is on fire! They’ve been playing almost non stop since signing with Earache Records. They’ve played a short headlining tour in the US, opened for some has beens and irrelevant bands and took on a huge headling tour in Europe. Momentum is on their side. Pressure & Time is a strong album. It’s powerful, it’s loud, it’s got the heart and the soul of what a great album is all about. If you don’t own this album, I don’t know you.

You finally receive what it is you’re looking for and it totally blows away your expectations. Yeah, Borracho’s debut Splitting Sky is like that. This album is so good that I own it on both CD and vinyl. It’s an awesome debut album that has been talked about highly since it’s release earlier in the year. It’s long at 57 minutes long but it sucks you in and makes you forget about time.

So, what I did was pull out the GOOD (expensive) headphones and plug in. It took a few listens but afterwards I walked away with a better respect for Salvador than I had before. I still hold Sasquanaut in high regard but Salvador has squeaked by it to hold the title of favorite Lo-Pan album. Now the question for Lo-Pan I have is this: How do you top Salvador? I think we’ll all find out sooner than later.

Maybe it’s the blues rock overtones. I don’t know but I was hooked on The Hundreth Monkey from the moment the first note played. “I have found an outstanding album. The album sounds great, it’s well written, recorded and mastered. I love the sound and I can’t put an emphasis on just how much. Overall it’s a rock solid album. It is an album that everyone and their mother should own.”

The blues based retro rock and roll sound and feel along with the awesome vocals make this one a top choice for me. “Movements has a nice warm 70′s and southern and classic rock feel to it. There are plenty of great guitar riffs, the vocals are excellent and it’s easy to get quite a few of the beats stuck in your head. It has a familiar but yet unique sound. It’s modern but yet feels so 1970-ish.”

If my iPhone were a Billboard Top list, 30 Weight would be one of those record setters for consecutive weeks on the charts. This album was not a disappointment in any way shape or form. The range and tone of the album is amazing. You get rock, country, doom and so much more. The Saint Vitus cover of “Bleed Black” is, well is excellent and should be in movies, TV shows and on radio. Do NOT be without this album!

Last year when the band announced that they were done recording the album, I had projected this being my number 1 pick. It was a pretty bold prediction considering that this is a sophomore release from Graveyard. Sophomore albums are either hit or miss. In the case of Graveyard, there is no sophomore slump. This was the most played album of 2011 for me. It came out when I was going through some rough shit so it has some memories of that time but it also helped lift and carry me through it. The band has stated that they are working on a followup album with no time frame for release but can it get better than Hisingen Blues? Time will tell but in the mean time, I’ll stick with this album.

I certainly didn’t. The band didn’t make much mention of the album until right before it came out when they released a sampler for free download. A month later the full album was out. Why is this my number 1? Well besides the fact it kicks ass, it sounds great, the blues rock with the psychedelic overtones are hypnotizing and it’s catchy as all hell. If you asked me in the summer if The Heavy Eyes would be on this list I would have told you probably not, at least not a top 20. Well here they are, my number 1.

James Lewis Carter Ford, also known by the moniker T-Model Ford, is the blues. That is to say, the blues isn’t just a way to describe his music but also his life – hard times and hard liquor, bad women and colorful friends, working class jobs and prison time, sweaty nights in the deep south and shakin’ smoky juke joint dives from ceiling to floor all night long with his extensive repertoire. Ford lived the life for nearly sixty years before even taking up the guitar and considering a career as a musician. He was a bluesman in real life before he was a bluesman on people’s stereos, before he was gracing stages of venues around the world, before he was a face on the sleeves of so many compact discs and pieces of vinyl. And that is undoubtedly what he will be until his dying day.

At ninety years of age T-Model Ford is still going strong, and his latest release on Alive Naturalsound Records, “Taledragger,” proves just that. Together with backing band GravelRoad, T-Model Ford has laid down eight new tracks for “Taledragger,” his eighth album to date, and his second on Alive Naturalsound. It’s not a surprise that he no longer releases his albums on the Fat Possum label, where he spent much of his early music career, as they deal less and less with blues artists as the years go by. And so, for all intents and purposes, Ford has found a decidedly better home label with Alive Naturalsound. And while changing labels, he also switched gears a bit in the sound department for his new release.

Though T-Model Ford resides in the Delta, his style often leans more towards the hill country set, like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, along with traces of old Chicago blues, like Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. But if one were to get right down to it, one would admit that T-Model Ford has long since developed his own unique sound; a sound which melds the traditional with the modern in a way that would have most singer/songwriters falling flat on their faces, but not T-Model Ford, who welcomes the challenge with a sly grin and a practiced hand. And it’s a sound that has remained encouragingly consistent throughout the years, from his wild 1997 debut “Pee-Wee Get My Gun” up to the present with “Taledragger.” And though there is a lot to appreciate on the new “Taledragger” album, it is undeniable that some of T-Model Ford’s most chaotic and stripped-down material was on his early Fat Possum releases. The change in sound, however, is no doubt due to Ford moving on from just he and his drummer Spam to the full band arrangement. In short, it gives his sound a less raw and primal edge, making it slightly cleaner and more refined, for lack of a better way to put it.

“Taledragger” is in and of itself a solid and praiseworthy collection of songs. Some of the standouts, however, are the opener “Same Old Train,” the eight-minute romp “Big Legged Woman,” the mellow and thoughtful “I Worn My Body for So Long,” and the blues standard closer “Little Red Rooster.” Much of what one hears on “Taledragger” are Ford’s interpretations of blues classics by other artists. But that’s one of the many great things about the blues: the songs have been swapped back and forth from artist to artist, so that there are several versions of them all.

When mentioning T-Model Ford’s age I should have said “around ninety,” since he is unable to remember his exact date of birth. Be that as it may, it seems as if Ford is in it for the long haul. After suffering a dislocated hip, a heart attack, and a stroke, the persistent bluesman keeps recording and touring. At that is no doubt what he will be doing at the end
