I’d say I’m sorry for abandoning this blog for so long, but I’m not, I just wasn’t in the mood for it. I’m not in the mood now either, but I feel like writing something.

I’ve got an awful headache past few days, I keep thinking about life and love, I smile but I don’t feel like it. I wouldn’t call my state depression, I just find it difficult to be truly happy. Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that I can’t fall asleep before midnight and even then it’s with some difficulties. I’m ready to do ten things at once and then I suddenly feel like not doing anything at all. There are times I want to cry so much, but I can’t make myself.

I’ve never been this moody before. It’s like there’s this creature inside me and it’s doing things to me. It’s eating me from the inside. It’s hard to explain and not sound like a very crazy person. At least I’ve still my dearest All-American Rejects. I know most of their songs by heart now, but their charm still works and I can’t stop listening to it. I actually gave a try today, I turned on different band, but after three or four songs I had to stop it. There wasn’t the sense that they’re talking to me which I’ve got when listening to AAR.

School is still surprisingly good. It’s just… the same all the time. I feel I need some change. Like get different timetable every week. I know, it’s crazy, but doing the same things week after week is something I forgot and sometimes (but only sometimes) it’s so hard. I feel like my life’s grey instead of green which it used to be.

Well, maybe you’ll hear from me soon, maybe not… I’m making no promises. Have fun.

Formed in 1999 in Stillwater, Oklahoma by high school friends Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, the All

Formed in 1999 in Stillwater, Oklahoma by high school friends Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, the All-American Rejects have been a force in the industry since releasing their self titled debut album in 2003.

The alt-rock band’s current lineup includes Ritter, Wheeler, Mike Kennerty and Chris Gaylor. Tyson Ritter is the band’s Swiss Army knife, the jack of all trades. He triples as the band’s lead vocalist, pianist and bass guitarist. Co-founder Nick Wheeler plays lead guitar and backing vocals, Kennerty serves as the rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist, and Chris Gaylor is on the drums.

The All-American Rejects album hit shelves on October 15, 2002 through Doghouse Records. However, it was re-released commercially by Dreamworks Records in 2003. Led by the success of the hit single “Swing Swing,” the band’s debut album was certified platinum by the RIAA.

(Album Cover)

Often times when band’s achieve success at a young age, especially when it’s their first album that goes platinum, the second effort normally struggles to live up to expectations. Just for clarification purposes, Ritter was only 18 when their debut album was released. That’s a lot of pressure for a kid so young. But The All-American Rejects laid a solid foundation for future triumph, and the band’s second album Move Along (2005), brought the band even more mainstream success.

Move Along produced three hit singles; “It Ends Tonight,” ”Dirty Little Secret” and “Move Along,” all of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Both “Move Along” and “Dirty Little Secret” sold over two million digital downloads in the US, paving the way for double platinum certification by the RIAA.

The band’s third album, 2008′s When the World Comes Down, was released in December of that year. The album’s lead single “Gives You Hell” peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 chart and became the Rejects’ first international hit. The album was certified gold by the RIAA.

The band’s fourth studio album Kids in the Street released worldwide on March 26, 2012. They are currently touring in support of the album. Since the start of their career, The All-American Rejects have sold over 10 million albums worldwide.

Did you know?

Frontman Tyson Ritter is not only a world class musician, he’s also dabbled in the acting world. He appeared on the TV show House M.D. in the episode “Fetal Position,” which aired on April 3, 2007. Ritter also made an appearance with his other band members in television series Smallville. Ritter’s most recent acting endeavor landed him a role in his first film, 2008′s The House Bunny.

Obviously, I have a fascination with words – combinations, strings, the flow of them, the emot

Obviously, I have a fascination with words – combinations, strings, the flow of them, the emotions they can evoke when placed in just the right way. I think the emotion of it all is why I enjoy anything artistic.

Art, in any form, is breathtaking to me. I attended an art fair at a local park downtown with booth after booth of local artists selling their wares. There was abstract art, still life, conceptual pieces, some pieces that were so realistic that I almost swore it was a photograph. There were sculptures and ceramics. It was amazing, probably more amazing to me because I have absolutely no skill in anything of that sort. My brain does not have the capacity to be that creative. But the emotion of every painting and sculpture was evident to me, no matter whether it was an ethereal painted scene or a dark and dramatic photographed lady or a twisted and garbled wooden creation, that emotion was there.

Dance amazes me. I used to dance. I was on a “dance team” in high school, which mostly did jazz style. In college I took ballroom, which not only fed into my love of music and dance, but also my love of all things vintage. Most of the dances we focused on were either centuries old, to get an understanding of where our current dance trends originated from, or the popular dances from decades past, such as disco. Swing was definitely my favorite. The Latin dances were damn near impossible for me. Sorry, Shakira, but MY hips DO lie…

Speaking of music, that is probably my favorite of all art forms. Anyone that can play an instrument simply dazzles me. A perfect example: Melanie Martinez from The Voice. That girl is barely over have my age, I think, and on her first appearance on the show she sings a crazy good rendition of Toxic by Britney Spears while playing the guitar and playing a tambourine WITH HER FEET. Are you kidding me?! Please, for the sake of all these musical, if you have not seen or heard this performance, FIND IT. Plus, the girl is absolutely adorable.

I attempted to learn how to play a keyboard once when I was younger. I had no idea what I was doing, so I basically just memorized the keys to five different songs. Four were classical pieces, 2 of which I can’t even remember the names of now, and one was “Breathe” by Faith Hill. I couldn’t complain, I had limited resources. But that was over a decade ago, and when I lost access to a keyboard (because I was too broke to buy my own) I forgot everything I had memorized quite quickly. I still get upset about that…

I also attempted to learn how to play guitar. I learned a piece of one song, “Swing, Swing” by the All American Rejects, which – in case you haven’t heard the song or haven’t paid attention – has the absolute easiest guitar in the world. It’s basically 3 chords just repeated through the entire song. I still got confused most of the time and my fingers did not stretch or bend in the appropriate ways to reach all the strings. Also, it hurt. I had no patience to build up callouses so that my finger tips didn’t feel like they were on fire. Playing an instrument just wasn’t in the cards for me. Unless you count the guitar or drums on Rock Band or Guitar Hero, because I can slay those things…as long as they aren’t on “hard.”

I have accepted that I am good with stringing words together when I have a proper idea and the right amount of focus, and this is probably why I have such an insane appreciation for songs. Don’t get me wrong, my love of music is partially because I love the sound of instruments. A complicated guitar riff, a hard-hitting drum beat, or violins in ANYTHING and I melt. But it’s the lyrics that I really connect with. The words and the emotion they bring out in me, even if it’s just a simple sentence, the way the artist phrases it or the little twists and turns they can take with it. I get chills on a regular basis by just paying attention to these little things, which is strange because I am generally hard to impress that much with any other thing. Because of the way I am effected by music so much, I am constantly on a search for more. More songs that I connect with in that way. New music that is something different, something original, something that I can appreciate for the work that was put into it or the creativity that was required to create it or the boldness to do it at all if it is different enough from what’s being played on the radio.

I have decided to begin a list of the lyrics that just grab me or artists or songs that I find that I just can’t get out of my head and share them, in case there is someone else out their that finds my blog and feels the same way. So in addition to my Confessions series that I will be continuing (These Are My Confessions, Part 1 and Part 2) and my nuggets of cleverness series(Quotes and Pictures/Images), I think I will also plan to start a series of artistic recommendations. I know this is a lot of different things going on for just one blog, but I feel like my blog is finally starting to really represent who I am because this is literally how my brain is every day – constant hodge-podge of random ideas and thought ranging across the entire spectrum of interests all thrown in together and mingling with each other. So welcome to the randomness of my mind and my attempt to sort it out. Grab a chair. Take off your shoes. This could take a while.

It’s Friday!

“Walk Over Me” is by The All-American Rejects off their 2012 “Kids in the Street” album. It’s a video mixed with cartoons and animations that give the song a unique, graphic novel feel.

Tyson Ritter, vocalist for AAR said in a Rolling Stone interview, ”This video is 5,312 pictures that Jon Danovic the director, myself, our friends, and some sweet people we found on Craigslist.com animated together to marry a song about losing your mind. It took four mind-numbing weeks, piles of cigarettes, loads of beer and a spiritual adviser to complete.”

Not only is their video unique, but their style is as well. So, rock out with AAR!

The All American Rejects are a band that had huge popularity a few years ago. Their first big hit was Swing Swing and then later with Move Along and Dirty Little Secret. I really liked the bands style and I’ve just started going back and listening to their music again and I like it even better this time around. My favorite song by them is It Ends Tonight which is a rock ballad about breaking up. I’ve heard rumors that they have come out with or are planning on coming out with a new album but I’m not sure if those rumors are true. I sure hope so. The band consists of vocalist and bassist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist Mike Kennerty and drummer Chris Gaylor. I think this band can really rock when they want to but they’re not too ashamed to show their pop side. I hope this band makes a comeback sometime and releases some more good music. Check ‘em out on iTunes or at AllAmericanRejects.com.

The All-American Rejects Favorite Album: Kids in the Street Their first two albums contained hit sin

The All-American Rejects

Favorite Album: Kids in the Street

Their first two albums contained hit singles that they would be best known for. Their third album, When the World Comes Down, although containing memorable songs for me, felt like AAR was undergoing this transition from teenage punk feel to a more grrreasy, throat-gritty feel — which is obvious from Tyson’s evolving vocals. Kids in the Street is, for me, the completion of said transition. And huzzah, the product is just spectacular, making AAR more awesome than before. In essence, their more current works are still true from their previous works — songs about hate, love, cynicism, bitterness, fuck-you-i’m-moving-on — and they still have this oomph about what makes the band so great, but the maturity in their latest album feels like the pinnacle of the band’s constant growth. And I’m loving it.

Favorite Song: Swing, Swing

The song that made them famous. It will always be their “mascot song” for a reason. The band has changed, yes. But with the way they sing this back then up to now with Tyson’s new vocal persona, it just keeps getting better and better.

Other favorite songs: Beekeeper’s Daughter, 11:11 PM, Another Heart Calls

Thoughts:

Tyson’s voice is undeniably unique. It’s downright dirty but greasy slick. And they have shown amazing versatility with the various song themes they can handle, and the styles that they dole out each year. Something libido-rising: I Wanna. Heart-tugging simplicity: I For You surprisingly comes from AAR. A hint of class: Affection is perfect for its dream-like music and rising pace.

Singing Gives You Hell and Breakin’ while thinking of my bitch ex-girlfriends. Ahhh, sweet imaginary revenge.

“If you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well

Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell”

Well, bad decisions make good stories. So, I was raised in a nice suburban town, where not many bad

Well, bad decisions make good stories.

So, I was raised in a nice suburban town, where not many bad things happened to me. There was like one sketchy part of town…and when I say part I mean like one corner. I think I grew up in the tenth safest city in the US. No joke.

And believe it or not, I thought I could handle myself moving to big(ger) city. I mean I’m smart! I got into Berkeley!

But apparently there is a difference between street smarts and book smarts.

Also, apparently there is a difference between Van Ness and South Van Ness.

Basically, what happened is, my friend and I, both fresh out of Suburbia, thought we could navigate public transit through San Francisco, by ourselves, with just a cursory review of the map. So we got to the Bart and then the Metro, no problem…but when we got off Muni we walked at least 20 blocks in the wrong direction.

Finally, we arrived at 1300 South Van Ness, which is not the Regency Ballroom. Yeah.

So, we decided to call a cab because we had no idea how buses work there. Unfortunately, we also had no idea how cabs worked. We ended up calling three different companies, missed our cab twice, and sent one cab in the wrong direction. After we finally got a cab we had to scrape together pennies to pay. Gosh I miss driving…I really miss my 2005 Ford Ranger…

We stood on a street corner utterly lost for about two hours. We also got hit on by drunk, homeless, high, or otherwise out-of-their-right-mind men a total of eight times, with a couple explicit threats of rape.

Finally though, we got a cab, and made it to our concert only mildly late.

It was a really cool concert. It was in a small venue in an old building. The bands dressed up and the stage was filled with fog. I felt pretty hipster. We also took a picture with the lead singer of Parachute…

Then we realized that the trains do not, in fact, run all night, so we had to book it down the street, leaving in the middle of Boys Like Girls. Its okay though cause we got to all of the All American Rejects.

Then after we walked another 20 blocks through San Franciscan rain with hoarse voices, we found the exit to the Muni station closed. In a panic we asked two girls walking by if there was another entrance, and after a moment of panic at the thought of spending the night in the streets of SF, we encountered the other entrance…

We made it back to Berkeley safely. Be proud.

So some advice I would give:

1. Really map out your route.

2. Wear a jacket out a night. Especially in San Francisco with its random rainstorms…but also I’m pretty sure a lot of guys thought I was a prostitute standing on a corner in a dress, leggings, and boots.

3. You don’t need alcohol to fuck shit up.

Best Halloween ever? Hell yes.

Welp, better get to that assignment due tomorrow…whoopsies!

I actually feel free. After giving my ex one final chance to talk to me, I realised that it doesn’t matter what his excuses are, thats’s all they are – excuses.

I already felt as if I was over him. A part of me will always care about him, no matter how much he may or may not have deceived me. I don’t love him anymore. I don’t want to be with him anymore. I don’t need haters in my life. The ‘friend’ sent me an apology today. But just like my ex is still insisting he wants to be friends, it’s too little too late. My ex says he’s too busy to reply. I have absolutely no doubt his new life has left him with less free time than he’s used to. But either he doesn’t want to be friends as much as he thinks he does and is therefore not trying to make time, going out with his new friends instead; or he’s working all the time – I don’t want either. One of my friends severely overworked last year, and it’s hard to tell people when to stop. You simply can’t tell people how to lead their life, they have to work out what’s best for them themselves. What I think is right for someone isn’t always. Though I’m not one to deny I can be an opinionated and stubborn person, I also realise I’m not always right. I hope for his sake my ex doesn’t work all hours of the day. I know what it’s like to want nothing more than to impress the people you work for, but I also know to recognise when you’re having the piss taken out of. The joys of part time working from the age of 15!

So the last text I sent my ex was a long (but not an essay) message about life and the future, and how I don’t hate him no matter what bitchy things he might hear. And the reply I got? Four lines (and phone’s aren’t exactly a 17″ monitor). Four lines of him saying he wanted to be friends, he didn’t have time to reply. And then this massive blast of fresh air hit me. It took him seconds to reply to my message, but he didn’t actually reply to much of what I’d said, barely anything. That’s not a friendship. I think he’s kidding himself. Or maybe this is genuinely his version of friendship. Either way, I don’t have any more time to waste on him, or anyone else that wants to try and waste my time and bring me down. I feel ALIVE.

Tomorrow I go back to uni. I’ve loved being at home – the change of atmosphere has really helped – but I’ve missed my flatmates. I still don’t know how my friends birthday is going to pan out, but never say never. She goes away to see her boyfriend this weekend too, and even though I’m sure a part of me will be jealous, I’m glad she’s happy. It shows that one day I will be too. And also, no matter how much I love her I have a lot of work to do this weekend, so maybe a weekend without slobbing out on the sofa watching Friends is needed!

Tomorrow is also fireworks night at our uni. Fireworks, friends, a ‘fab’ night out at our union, and who knows what else. Whatever happens, I will be dancing like a crazy cat!

Music being listened to - All American Rejects. Came on the radio whilst I was driving today. Haven’t listened to this album in years. It’s a bit of a ‘screw you’ anthem, which isn’t really the sound I was going for, but who cares, it’s a nice one to shout out!

OK. To the five… oh, no, four people who follow this blog, sorry. It’s been a while. To everyone else, Céad míle fáilte romhat! Two things. One, I’ve changed to the Monster theme because I love Halloween, and it is TWO days away. I have to work, but I get to go to work dressed as a pirate and possibly get away with plundering some cash register booty. Two, my last post was an angsty rant post. I’m sorry. I will stick to my ugly-runner best and save the rants for the next time I get a haircut and end up looking like Justin Bieber. Except for this rant. I get one more rant, written two days ago on a particularly sleepy day in Bathwater:

“Right now I am sitting at the table that looks out over ‘downtown’ Bathwater, converting double and triple batch ingredients into ‘1T’ instead of ‘3t.’ Whenever a tourist asks where the rest of Bathwater is, I tell them, ‘This is it.’ That pretty much sums up the attitude of people who live here. Some of them are like, ‘THIS IS IT! I live in one of the most beautiful counties in the country! I have a small community where people plan flash mobs for a neighbor’s birthday! People work their whole lives to live here! This is fantastic!” Other people are more “This is it,” said in a slow, comfortable farmer drawl. They have a good crop most years and can afford to take their kids shopping in the ‘city’ every now and then. They are content. The tourists, on the other hand, laugh. “This is it?” I feel like I fall more in line with them. I have a lot to be thankful for. But it’s just not where I want to be right now. I need to interact with younger people. I need to be challenged. I need adventure. I feel like my blog started more sassy, but I feel like I was more sassy, too. The store has been playing Alison Krauss for three days in a row. I love her, but sometimes my brain needs MCR, AAR, and other acronymic bands.”

I had another rant from a few weeks ago. Paraphrased, it says something like:

“My mind is busy, but my brain is not. It does not know how to proceed or what to try next. Having options is a bitch. When you want to try everything, there is nothing to be a part of. In college I worked to create a resume the size of an encyclopedia entry, and I still work at a grocery store. Any job is a good job, but where to go from here? I have applied to jobs and internships and assistantships and fellowships and things I am in no way qualified for. Mostly, I am ignored, because they are too busy being the company of your dreams to even send a “thanks, but no thanks” auto-reply. What gives? Clearly I am going about something in the wrong way. I thought about moving to The City without a job, living off savings, and pounding the pavement, but will that really yield? Maybe I need a Master’s. Maybe I should switch career goals entirely. Maybe I should write a book series, sell the movie rights, and never have to worry about finding a job. No. I want a job. It doesn’t have to be a good job. I just want half a shot at stepping inside Conde Nast.”

Over the last few days I determined I might be picking the wrong career to try and break into. But really, how do you know until you’re there? Hermione Granger could have picked any job and done it well. How in the wizarding world did she become a Healer?

Yes, I’ve been quite absent from this blog and I’m sorry. Hold fast folks! I already have a few more posts lined up. And one is very delicious. Oh!

But for this post I shall share a little insight, a little discovery, and a fun little story! So hold on tight!

Parachute, All-American Rejects, and Boys Like Girls

I finally went to another concert. Did you know it has been TWO WHOLE YEARS since my last concert? (I guess Neon Trees is just that good.) This last one was very well worth the wait. It probably helped that I was with my concert-going-buddy and partner in crime, Rachel! (Remember her?)

As with most adventures with Rachel, there were lessons that were learned. One of which, is the obvious value of education. Sounds boring, right? BUT WAIT! It’s actually interesting! It was especially obvious to see the difference between Parachute and All-American Rejects.

Parachute did a phenomenal job! They could possibly be my new band crush. Almost up there with One Republic (Sorry boys! You’ll just have to duke it out I guess). Because I’m a poor college student, I am currently listening to them on Spotify. Their music seems so well put together, there seems to be a certain eloquence to it. And they can actually sing!

Parachute is classy. (When I say someone is classy, that is a very high compliment.) The way they interacted with the fans, you would have thought we were all school chums. They obviously where having good fun. Which would make sense since they all went to college. I could just go on and on about my new love. You may know them from this song.

Then you had All-American Rejects. Uh… They were alright. Imagine the stereotypical punk rock show and you have it there. Nothing too spectacular or impressive. The lead singer and one of the guitarists was signed onto a record company when the lead singer was 16 and a junior in high school. And it shows.

Don’t get me wrong! I do enjoy their music. That’s why I went. But it was obvious the difference a college education makes. Even a little bit. I graduated high school when I was a 16 year old junior in high. The brain grows and develops after you stop going to school. However, there is a distinct impression made from formal schooling. Weird, eh?

It was also funny to see how the band and mostly Mormon fans interacted. It’s hard to explain, but fascinating to watch. If your a musician coming to Utah (Provo/Orem), you should do your homework. Most people remember this song from way back when.

Now that we’ve looked at how education leaves an impression on people (classy vs proud white-trash) Boys Like Girls comes in to shed a little light on the case. I absolutely loved them! These boys now how to rock. They just seemed to know what they were doing, everything flowed together splendidly, and the reason why I love concerts was tattooed onto my brain.

There’s just something about live music. When a band can really play, a singer can actually sing, and you can rock with them, you develop a new tie to music. Nothing can replace it. You just have to experience it. Just like life education. It doesn’t even have to be formal education, because we all know wisdom and understanding come from experience. The lighting and energy brought so much life to the concert! What if you could do that with the world? Just a thought.

So maybe I’ve been hitting the research article too hard. All in all, the concert was amazing! I can’t hear as well and I’ll probably have sings stuck in my head for the next month (I still have this song in my head from Boys Like Girls, along with so many of their other songs), but it was so worth it! Now for story time! I think this may have even been better then the last college concert I went to.

Story Time!

Will Anderson, Parachute’s lead singer, told a little story about visiting the universities library earlier that day and taking the last seat available, thus stealing it from another student.

Today I was at the event center where the concert took place, and I thought Hey! Why not stop by the library too? This idea was encouraged by Rachel (who also has developed a band crush on Parachute). By using my built in greatness detector I tracked down where Will Anderson sat. I would then proceed to sit on whoever was sitting there and debate on whether or not to tell them why I was sitting on them. This is what would have happened if my common sense didn’t kick in and if I didn’t have close to run to. BUT BE WARNED library dwellers. When I become a rockstar…

Be the life of the party!

Parachute: http://www.weareparachute.com/

All-American Rejects:http://www.allamericanrejects.com/default.aspx#!featured

Boys Like Girls: http://www.boyslikegirls.com/ (They’re coming out with a new album soon! I can’t wait!)

There was a time when you couldn’t turn on the radio or TV without hearing the All-American Rejects

There was a time when you couldn’t turn on the radio or TV without hearing the All-American Rejects song “Gives You Hell.”

The band’s biggest song yet took them on an incredible journey — touring the globe and taking in all the success of a No. 1, chart-topping hit. But when it was all over, lead singer Tyson Ritter didn’t really know where to go.

Ritter has said he was in a dark place, partying with the wrong crowd and feeling a bit lost. In an effort to find himself — and find inspiration for a new album at the same time — he and fellow band mate Nick Wheeler went into seclusion and wrote what eventually became the band’s latest album, Kids in the Street. The result was a collection of songs with deeper and more meaningful lyrics than ever before.

Currently on tour, CBS Minnesota chatted with guitarist Mike Kennerty about the new album, how the band has evolved and getting the Glee treatment. Kennerty admitted he was impressed when he first heard what Ritter came up with.

“I felt like Tyson, in particular, really dug deep with these songs, lyrically, and really presented himself in a way he hasn’t before, really stretched himself to write the best lyrics he has,” he said. “And on top of that, vocally, he’s never stretched his range as much as he has on Kids in the Street. It makes me very proud to be in a band with that guy.”

He went on to explain that Tyson’s darkest days became the catalyst for the album, likening it to a “soul-searching record.”

“Every time we write a record, we always tour it until we’re exhausted and then we go home and it’s like a separate entity from the touring,” he said. “It puts us in a different mindset, we’re different people, we’re older.”

Kennerty joined the band a decade ago and said he’s noticed a major shift in their fan base.

“Touring this past year for Kids in the Street and seeing the age group of our fan base has really grown – all from young kids up to people who are in their 40s and up,” he said. “It’s an amazing spread. It makes us really proud and makes us feel like we’re doing something right.”

[vevo]http://www.vevo.com/watch/the-all-american-rejects-1/gives-you-hell-full-narrative-version/USUV70807183?source=instantsearch[/vevo]

Their growing fan base could also be from an impressive performance of their hit single “Gives You Hell” on Glee.

“They just asked us. And we were like, ‘Sure.’ That was when Glee was just getting going but then by the time it actually aired, it had become a phenomenon,” Kennerty recalled. “So it was like, ‘Sh**, that was a good thing to say yes to.’”

So were the guys happy with how the song turned out?

“Yeah, it turned out great. It’s always fun to hear how other people interpret songs,” he said. “There was some kid on The Voice the other week that sang ‘Gives You Hell.’ It’s neat to see, though.”
