Honeymoon!
Lauren and I decided we’d splurge and spend our wedding money on a real honeymoon vacation this winter. Sure, we took a mini three-day trip to the North Shore, but we wanted to do something a little more exotic. So, we worked with a travel agent and decided to go to Jamaica for a week in January! We’ll be staying at the all-inclusive Sandals Dunn’s River resort. We are very excited! (Except for the part where I use up 60% of my yearly vacation three weeks into the year.) The idea of visiting a country we’d never been to appealed to us, which is one reason we turned down Mexico. The Dominican Republics were another option we strongly considered. There are rumors (but nothing confirmed) that I will be attending the CES trade show in Las Vegas for work a week before that, so January could be a busy month away from home.

Home Improvement
This weekend was pretty low-key as Lauren and I made some changes to our apartment. We originally moved in a few days early and didn’t give the apartment management enough time to make some renovations, so we’re stuck with a filthy carpet and dirty walls. But Saturday we broke out the paint and got the living room looking nice. We also got rid of our monstrosity of a couch which I purchased on Craigslist for $50 two years ago. It was a decent couch, but was ungodly heavy as it had two metal recliners built in. It took 45 minutes to wedge it into our apartment in February, but Lauren and I managed to get it down to the trash in about 10 minutes on Saturday. Helped that we had gravity on our side this time.

Thanksgiving
I’m excited for our feast on Thursday! Lauren seems just as excited to prepare the hearty gravy-covered Thanksgiving feast as I am to eat it. We scoped out all the best Cub Foods deals yesterday and saved over $35 on our purchases. With Lauren’s office opening back up the day after Thanksgiving, we couldn’t make an out-of-state trip to see the Glanzers back on the farm or to Iowa to see Grandma Joyce. For anyone in town on Friday, we’re planning to have a little get-together at our place for some poker.

Sports
Mauer could be named MVP today! We’ll find out at 1:00 who wins the American League honor. If it’s Derek Jeter for some sort of lifetime achievement award I’ll be upset. Mark Teixeira also will surely get a few votes, but hopefully he and Jeter cancel each other out to some extent and Mauer runs away with it… Also, great weekend of football as the Vikings and Chargers both won very convincingly. If it weren’t for the Colts and Saints, I might be thinking Super Bowl… And the Timberwolves are on pace to go 8-74, which would make them the worst team in the history of the NBA. Luckily for them the Nets are 0-13 and on pace to go 0-82.

For todays post i’m going to tell you about my favourite vacation i have been on yet!  In February 2008 my brother got married on a resort in the Dominican Republic.  We were in Punta Cana and it was a 5 star resort!  I have never been to a more beautiful resort it was called the Majestic Colonial.  I did not have one complaint at all (besides the fact my brothers luggage was lost but thats the airports fault).

There were a total of 40 guests that made it out for the wedding.  Everywhere you went in the resort you knew someone.  We even over took the Disco every night.  It was so much fun.  Some of the many thing we did were Kayaking, Dune Buggy’s,  Flea Market, Snorkelling,  and LOTS of food and drinks!

The wedding was beautiful, it was a a gazebo on the resort.  It was more private then the beach option. It was a short and sweet wedding (i cried haha) We then took pictures around the resort and on the beach.  Although the beach pictures were nice, a lot of other guest (in speedos) felt the need to stand behind the pictures and stare well in the way.  The dinner was delicious and the workers were amazing.

It was an all inclusive resort so unlimited food and drinks.  They had many restaurants there that you could book.  They had a good variety of food and of course the drinks were awesome.   Congrats to the happy couple!

The Aventura Spa Palace is one of my favorite resorts.  It caters to Honeymooners and is 45 minutes south of the Cancun airport.  The resort itself used to be “adults only.”  Not that there was anything risqué going on, they just did not want kids there.  This has since changed.  The resort has become so popular that children are now allowed on half of the resort.  The resort is split among two identical towers.  The Spa Palace side is still adults only and the Cove Palace side is now “kid friendly.”  The towers are about a mile apart from each other and have a shuttle service between the two.

So why do I like this so much?

First off,  it is all inclusive.  For those who have no clue what that is, basically it is the most worry-free, relaxed vacation you can have in my opinion.  This means all your food including snacks and room service, all your beverages including alcohol, all your tips, all your non motorized watersports like kayaks, paddleboats, etc, are taken care of.  The food was very, very good.  You could do anything from a buffet, to Oriental, to Italian, to Mexican, to American.  The list goes on and on.  The drinks were also the best I have had at an all inclusive.  Premium shelf alcohol.  There is a big difference between drinks using that and the Mexican cheap stuff.

The hotel itself is laid out beautifully with no problems finding your way around.  The rooms are generally king bed on the adults side and double beds on the Cove side.  All the rooms have some kind of view, either the grounds or the water, and all have a Jacuzzi tub in them.  The adults only side even has a liquor dispenser cabinet where you can make your own drinks.  There is a fully stocked refrigerator in each room, and at the Palace resorts you get free long distance to call home if you need to.  The only draw back is there is no elevator, but the hotel only has 3 stories.

There are also some included tours that come with your stay.  The Mayan pyramids in Tulum, a snorkeling adventure near Cozumel, Wet and Wild in Cancun to name a few.  All of these come with your stay.

The beach is a draw back for some.  It is man made and is very private.  Because of the man made part, it is not a walking beach.  Like I said this could be a drawback for some.  You have your own private lagoon where you can snorkel or paddle boat and if you do not like the ocean, the pools are fantastic and they do have swim up pool bars which is a nice touch.

The final point I will make is that at this resort I could take advantage of the other Palace Resorts in Cancun and the Riveria Maya. 7 total.  That means if I went to Cancun for the day, I could go over to lets say the Sun Palace for lunch and all that is included.

So who would I send to this resort?  Anyone really.  But I must say, it is a GREAT spot for honeymooners.
