Which is why I so love flavored ice cubes. They dress up a simple lemonade, and can they be enjoyed by everyone. And, the process of melting actually makes one’s drink better, so these are a perfect choice for warm weather entertaining!

Flavored ice cubes lend themselves to many beverages, including iced tea, water (fizzy or flat), and any sort of punch. My all-time favorite medium, however, is lemonade, which I buy ready-made and pour into a pretty pitcher for serving (why not make it easy?).

Basil Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

1 cup Sugar

1 cup Water

1 cup Loosely packed fresh basil leaves

Directions

1. Heat ingredients over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved
2. Remove from heat, & allow to steep for about 15 minutes
3. Strain syrup
4. Keeps for about a week in the refrigerator, stored in an airtight container

Strawberry Basil Ice Cubes

Ingredients:

1 ½ cup strawberries, hulled & chopped

½ cup water

¼ cup basil simple syrup

Bender, fine mesh strainer, cute silicone ice trays or baking molds

Directions

1. Blend strawberries until smooth & strain to remove seeds
2. Stir in simple syrup & water
3. Spoon into ice cube trays
4. Freeze

Chocolate Ice Cubes – Works great for Milkshakes or Smoothies

Ingredients:

½  cup milk (I  have used soymilk)

¼  cup water

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon sugar

¾  cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Combine milk, water, cocoa powder and sugar in a sauce pan and simmer over medium heat until well combined
2. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until fully melted
3. Pour into ice cube tray and stick in the freezer
4. Pop out a couple cubes when you’re craving something sweet and enjoy

All you need is a cheap bottle of wine, a blender and ice.

Mother’s Day History

Mothers Day 1

Contrary to popular belief, Mother’s Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.

In the United States, Mother’s Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it “Mother’s Work Day.”

Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else.

In 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Legend has it that young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.”

Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen like John Wannamaker, and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna’s mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother’s favorite flower, the white carnation. Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. In 1914 Anna’s hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday.

At first, people observed Mother’s Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day’s sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother’s Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mother’s group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the mother’s day tradition.

Despite Jarvis’s misgivings, Mother’s Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

What do people do?

Cinco de Mayo is seen as a day to celebrate the culture, achievements and experiences of people with a Mexican background, who live in the United States. There is a large commercial element to the day, with businesses promoting Mexican services and goods, particularly food, drinks and music. Other aspects of the day center around traditional symbols of Mexican life, such as the Virgin de Guadalupe, and Mexican-Americans who have achieved fame, fortune and influence in the United States.

One of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations are in cities such as Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, San Antonio, Sacramento, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver and El Paso in the USA’s south-western regions. In these cities, a large proportion of the population has Mexican origins. Many people hang up banners and school districts organize lessons and special events to educate their pupils about the culture of Americans of Mexican descent. In some areas, particularly in Pubelo de Los Angeles, celebrations of regional Mexican music and dancing are held.

Public life

Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in the United States. Organizations, businesses and schools are open as usual. Public transit systems run on their usual schedule. In some areas of some cities, especially those in the Southwest, local parades and street events may cause some local congestion to traffic.

Mexican Fiesta Dip

A medley of Mexican flavors comes together in this spectacular scoopable dip. Cream cheese makes a delicious base for the dip, layered with seasoned beef, sour cream, tomato, olives and Cheddar for a tasty treat for tortillas.

Cooking Instructions

1. Crumble ground beef in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, mix in the taco sauce and set aside.
2. In a large bowl, mix the sour cream, cream cheese and taco seasoning mix. Spread the mixture into a medium serving dish.
3. Layer the sour cream mixture with beef mixture, Cheddar cheese and lettuce. Top with tomato, green onions and black olives.

The tradition of Maypole and greeneries:

MayDay - May Pole

By the Middle Ages every English village had its Maypole. The bringing in of the Maypole from the woods was a great occasion and was accompanied by much rejoicing and merrymaking. The Maypoles were of all sizes. And one village would vie with another to show who could produce the tallest Maypole. Maypoles were usually set up for the day in small towns, but in London and the larger towns they were erected permanently.

The Maypole tradition suffered a setback for about a couple of decades since the Puritan Long Parliament stopped it in 1644. However, with the return of the Stuarts, the Maypole reappeared and the festivities of May Day were again enjoyed. One of the great Maypoles, was

The changes brought about by the Reformation included attempts to do away with practices that were obviously of pagan origin. But the Maypole, or, May tree, was not issued in practice at the behest of the second Stuart.

Although they succeeded in doing this, Maypole with most of the other traditions, many still survived. And Maypole is one of them. In France it merely changed its name. In Perigord and elsewhere, the May Tree became the “Tree of Liberty” and was the symbol of the French Revolution. Despite the new nomenclature, the peasants treated the tree in the same traditional spirit. And they would dance around it the same way as their forefathers had always done.

How to celebrate Earth Day with kids?

1. Plant a garden – Children love to get their hands dirty while learning at the same time. Have your child pick out the seeds or flowers that they want to plant. Once you get all the supplies needed, head home and start planting. Talk to your children about the importance of planting gardens and how it affects the earth.

2. Earth Scavenger Hunt – Come up with a list of items for your children to find in nature. Then have them draw pictures of what they found, and then finish by talking about the things that they found.

3. Spring Clean the Green Way - This is a great activity that your kids will love, and parents too! The spring is a perfect time to try new green cleaning products. Your child can help you with the windows while you clean the floors. Turn on some good music, and start cleaning!

• A list of things you want to do before you die. The saying comes from the term “kicked the bucket”.
• A list of things you think you might need to accomplish because you feel your own mortality closing the door on you.
• You feel insecure about your life and therefore make a list of things to get busy on.

How much does it cost? Probably 30 minutes to an hour, or more if you get really caught up in the writing .

What do you gain? Significant clarity and focus on what you want from your life. It’s an invaluable exchange.

Create a list of things if you are not sure of what you want to put on let me make a few suggestions.

v  Places you would like to go

v  Go Camping

v  What would you like to buy?

v  Fly or cruise around the world

v  Standup comedy

v  Run a 5 or 10K

Start writing down what comes to mind as you read these questions:

• What if you were to die tomorrow?
• What would you wish you could do before you die?
• What have you always wanted to do but have not done yet?
• What will you do if you have unlimited time, money and resources?
• Any countries, places or locations you want to visit?
• What are your biggest goals and dreams?
• What do you want to see in person?
• What achievements do you want to have?
• What experiences do you want to have / feel?
• Are there any special moments you want to witness?
• What activities or skills do you want to learn or try out?
• What are the most important things you can ever do?
• What would you like to say/do together with other people?
•             People you love?
•             Family?
•             Friends?
• Are there any specific people you want to meet in person?
• What do you want to achieve in the different areas: Social, Love, Family, Career, Finance, Health (Your weight, Fitness level), Spiritual?
• What do you need to do to lead a life of the greatest meaning?

Come up with as many items as you can. The items should be things you have not done yet. Don’t stop until you finish listing at least 101 things!
