I am so sorry that I’ve been MIA! My cousins flew in this last weekend so we have company in

I am so sorry that I’ve been MIA! My cousins flew in this last weekend so we have company in town. On top of an already busy schedule AND getting ready for Thanksgiving, it’s made for a crazy week! I’m here, I’m hanging-in, I’m maintaining. I’m NOT, however, working out like I want to be. I’m giving myself a little grace this week but I do have a gym bag in my car so I can take advantage of any unexpected down time to get to the gym. And next week I’ll breathe a sigh of relief over getting back to a somewhat more predictable schedule.

Saying No

I was thinking this morning about my sister, who is pregnant with her fourth child (3rd birth; her oldest is adopted). LS (“little sis”) struggled with being overweight in high school and early in college; she lost about 40 pounds and has more or less kept it off since then. We were talking yesterday when I was over at her place (with said company) and I commented, as so many others have, that other than baggy shirts hiding her bump, she doesn’t really look very pregnant!

LS is very self-conscious about her body and weight; she has never seemed to get over feeling like the chubby girl, even though she hasn’t been for years. So, by extension, everyone’s fixation on her body while pregnant makes her VERY uncomfortable. People wanting to touch her belly drives her CRAZY! So I try not to talk about it too much, but we’re sisters and I don’t really censor myself around her, so sometimes I just say things that, if I were trying to be tactful, I wouldn’t say.

So anyways, LS replied in an offhand way, saying something like, “Well, I’m being a lot more careful about it this time; I don’t want to gain any more weight than I have to since it’s so hard for me to take off.” And I realized, this morning, that maintaining her weight in a healthy range is not easy for LS…in fact, it’s hard work – just as hard as losing weight.

I kept thinking and realized that she probably says “no” to herself a lot. She and I have different vices; give me chocolate ice cream, but give her pepper fried steak with sauteed mushrooms on top. But we’re both foodies, we both love to eat, and we both grew up in a family that celebrates with food. And yet here I am nearly 100 pounds overweight; and there LS is, at a healthy weight for most of her adult life. What’s the difference between us? There are a few: she never got to be as overweight as I did, she doesn’t have such a hard time with sweets, etc.

But really, the main difference between LS and me is this: she has learned to say no to herself.

When I was in therapy I talked a lot with my counselor about the petulant teenager inside me who wants what she wants when she wants it. Period. And how much I fight that girl on a daily basis. I think part of that is why I have such a hard time saying no to myself. (In case you care about the history, in case it matters, I grew up in a home that was very healthy and strict about having sweets, so when I was growing up, the first thing I’d do when I got a dollar was go buy two candy bars, eat them, and dispose of the wrappers somewhere other than home, so I couldn’t be found out. And thus a closet-eater was born.)

This morning when I stopped at Starbucks for my morning latte, I had this whole conversation with myself (internally, of course!) about wanting something sweet. Do I want a cookie? No, that’s 450 calories. But so is the gingerbread – actually, it’s 500 calories! Well, maybe I’ll get something (pumpkin bread?) and eat only half. That wouldn’t be unreasonable, but didn’t I just last night, as I was falling asleep, think that a day free of sugar would be a good idea? Well, that doesn’t have to be today, though, does it? But I really want something, so I should be able to have it! Why should I have to deprive myself? But I don’t even love any of these sweet things; if I’m going to splurge, shouldn’t it be on something I really love? Unless something is better than nothing.

And therein lies the struggle: in my head, it’s either something right now, damnit, or nothing. It’s all or nothing. It’s “good” or “bad”, black and white, balls to the wall or sitting on the couch eating Ben & Jerry’s all evening long. This moderation thing? I haven’t got it half figured out yet.

After all that thinking and talking, you’d think I’d have an epiphany; a magical realization for how to get “better” at all of this. I don’t. All I know is, I have a lot to learn. Some of it has to do with saying “no” to myself. Some of it has to do with letting the grown-up SRG (SeattleRunnerGirl) be in charge, and with figuring out how to get the teenage SRG to go along with that without kicking and screaming. But part of it, too, is figuring out how to satisfy the need that teenager has without using food. Still another part is retraining myself to realize that life doesn’t work in black & white, all-or-nothing terms. That sometimes it really is good enough to be good enough, and not perfect.

Better get to work, hadn’t I?

I know when she’s been on your mind
That distant look is in your eye
I thought with time you’d realize
It’s over over

It’s not the way I choose to live
And something somewhere’s got to give
As sharing this relationship gets older older

You know I’d fight for you
But how I can fight someone who isn’t even there
I’ve had the rest of you now I want the best of you
I dont care if that’s not fair

Cause I want it all
Or nothing at all
There’s no where left to fall
When you reach the bottom it’s now or never

Is it all
Or are we just friends
Is this how it ends
With a simple telephone call
You leave me here with nothing at all

There are times it seems to me
I’m sharing you with memories
I feel it in my heart
But I dont show it show it
And then there’s times you look at me
As though I’m all that you can see
Those times I don’t believe it’s right
I know know it

Don’t me make me promises
Baby you never did know how to keep them well
I’ve had the rest of you
Now I want the best of you
It’s time for show and tell

Cause you and I
Could lose it all if you’ve got no more room
No room inside for me in your life
Cause I want it all
Or nothing at all
There’s no where left to fall
It’s now or never

What i was looking at for 5 hours of today

working, the program must close”. I got so angry because i was just about to upload the picture that would complete the post!

Anyway, my day: I woke up quite early this morning, and i had a shower (I’m not actually going to tell you every event of my day, I just feel that a shower is quite significant). My mum then took me to Chatham train station where I waited for my company for the day. We got our tickets and got on the train. It took exactly 53 minutes. We then got the tube to Hammersmith, all smoothly until we had to queue for and hour to get in. I made the lunch run because I was starve, and as I had supplied the tickets, they bought my lunch all was well. We got in eventually, and I was slapped around the face with surprise as i saw the vastness of the venue. As the afternoon wore on, I saw the likes of the AMAZING Black Eyed Peas, who must now be knackered considering they were on X-factor earlier this evening.

After this, Alexandra Burke performed. Now, I’ve never been a particular fan of this woman, but after hearing her voice live, I have been left reeling with shock. I never knew how powerful a voice could be, I feel the song Hallelujah could over-throw nations! The rest of the acts were could, but anything beneath The Black Eyed Peas or Alexandra Burke, I feel is unworthy of a mention. However, when Tom Felton, Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter, came on stage, I went mental, considering my Harry Potter obsession. People around me were actually staring. I doubt they realised how desperate they looked and sounded when JLS came on stage. I recall hearing “Marvin, I want to have your babies” which is just darn right inappropriate!

I now realise how much of an old man I just sounded… I do apologise.

The day continued without any poignant events. It was still all very smooth, and I was then bought dinner. I was so happy!

I think I’m going to leave it there for now, I’ve somewhat dragged on.

Bye

All story is built on an idea. Like a great oak is born from a tiny acorn, every idea has to start somewhere. The difference is, unlike growing one plant from one seed, ideas can germinate from multiple sources, blending more into a recipe or blend to serve your own nefarious purposes – to get your hero and heroine, and quite likely your villain, into the proper space and time.

All or Nothing, cover art by Kimberlee Mendoza

All or Nothing is historical fiction, based upon facts. A series of interesting points from the same time period in Arizona Cavalry history, when mixed together became the story that it is today. What I needed:

A setting – I chose Tucson, Arizona of the late 1870s. Having grown up there, I used to spend hours daydreaming about the people who inhabited the fort, built the adobe structures, looked upon those same mountains…

A motivating/inciting incident for my brooding hero – I chose an incident from history that was in my backfile – a newspaper article by Tucson reporter, Bonnie Henry, when she discussed the horrors of the Camp Grant Incident from 1871. A group of powerful citizens of Tucson took it upon themselves to pal up with one side of a Native American war, and see to it they obliterated the Apache tribe under supplication to the military. This horrified me when I read it, and even more when I realized that so many streets, districts of Tucson boasted the names of the men in charge of the mess. How would a soldier with a conscience, doing as told, have handled such a massacre? Thus, became Bowen’s backstory.

A reason for my heroine to head west, and meet said brooding hero—well, what did a woman do in the 1870s? She was either a wife, a teacher, possibly a nurse, a seamstress. As I’ve always loved the art of stitching—seamstress she became. And, her erstwhile hubby—a dreamer and schemer—received a contract to make military uniforms for Fort Lowell…that she must fulfill after his murder.

A mechanism for such a strong minded heroine to lean so heavily upon her hero/and a mystery for them to solve, together—An Arizona Highways article led me to the brief blurb about El Tejano, one of the bandits who roamed the Tucson area mountain trails in the late 1870s, terrifying his victims with a horrible mask and the Mexican phrase, Todo o Nada…All or Nothing. Not only the title, but his catch phrase. And, who better for him to set upon than a young widow traveling through the mountains, flying by the seat of her pants, powered by faith that someday things would be better for her.

Years ago, while an archaeology student at the University of Arizona, I studied the laundresses of Fort Lowell, under the tutelage of the Museum Curator, David Faust. He loves to talk about the women who worked the fort, how the officers’ wives felt about them, and how important and unsung they were. Mr. Faust told me about the landscape of the area, gifted me with articles that described the area rivers in detail—now dry and dusty, diverted to reservoirs. I’ve moved those files with me from home to home over the course of fifteen years, and finally found a story worthy of using them.

While I had the framework of the idea, and the story in full swing, occasionally I’d find myself in need of “seasoning.” I no longer had the luxury of running to the Arizona Historical Society to view their archives of photographs, but I did have their web site to sift through. And, thanks to the Google Book Project, I had access to writings and journals from people who lived in the time period and place I was researching. I poured over Martha Summerhayes’ Vanished Arizona, her account of growing up in the west, a new Cavalry wife, available in the public domain. Though only a small portion takes place at Fort Lowell, she taught this writer about what it was like to travel during that time, to be a mother during that time, and provided the name of my hero from one of her lesser characters. Bowen. Loved it. Had star quality, even if her description is a far cry than my own devastatingly handsome hero.

With yellow pad in hand, I took notes. On Martha’s remembered sights, scents, sounds. It was a start, but I needed more. I needed details on dress, costume, what resources were available for a woman in a remote fort. What would she buy at the post store? How would she ride a horse? How long would it take to go by horseback from the fort to the city? To the edge of the mountains? Plus, I had the advantage of hiking that terrain most of my life, and an author’s imagination of how someone from a time with no air conditioning in the heat of the summer, no indoor plumbing, and no ready access to a Walmart would handle the perils and pitfalls of being a woman during that period of history.

Of course, there was creative license. It’s fiction, after all—and sometimes, even with the history in hand, you need to bend facts to meet your plot-needs. But, before bending them, you need to know what really happened, and make it work for your modern audience.

So, how’d it all pan out?

Reviews of All or Nothing have been overwhelmingly positive, remarking on detail, setting, and story. The recipe was sound, the ingredients meshed together in proper flavor, and the seasoning enough to provide an intriguing event for my hero and heroine to reach their happily ever after.

Researching the elements of history were key to success, and most of it, from the comfort of my living room couch, courtesy of my wireless internet access.

Yes, it’s barely necessary to darken the doorways of a library anymore –though I do, whenever possible—because nothing can replace the skills of a knowledgeable librarian, and the scent of book stacks.

Transportation – the train didn’t reach Tucson until 1878, so how would a woman traveling with her sister reach Tucson from Kansas City, Missouri? – I literally ran into an almost train wreck here, having an improper stop on my Atchitson, Topeka, Santa Fe line out of Kansas City. So, back to Google I went – during edits! And found some excellent maps, depicting stops, as well as how one would get from Colorado to Tucson, by way of stage.
Inventing history?

While writing this article, I’ve discovered something about historical research. It’s possible, when you talk about something long enough, devotedly enough, that you can in fact put your own thumbprint on history. Research of El Tejano, more often than not, brings up blog posts I’ve written on this unsung villain of our desert. See my comments on him here:

At this moment in time, I am doing many things to distract myself. I am taking 16 credits this semes

At this moment in time, I am doing many things to distract myself. I am taking 16 credits this semester at school, I am going to therapy three to four times a week, and I am working part-time. Recently I stopped to think about all I am doing. I realized that I might be distracting myself too much.

I have just recently returned to school, I did not transition into school, as I should have. Instead, I took as many classes as my parents would pay for. In therapy right now, I am doing abreaction work because I do not want to have flashbacks at school. However, I think that my therapist and I may be digging, but right now, I am functional. At work I really cannot stand being around people that I do not know, so I work one day a week in the office by myself.

As I ask myself, where do I draw the line between distraction and avoidance I remember back before I remembered and I lived the same lifestyle, all or nothing. Right now, I am living with my parents and my siblings, which is difficult because they are tied to my abuse. It is hard for me to show myself as imperfect in front of them, so I choose not to. They see an alter who is perfect in their eyes; she is just like my older sister (which they love).

While doing all this there is very little time for being social. Back in May, we started having a hard time, and we decided to cut all contact off with friends and family. Our friends tried to contact us but we refused to answer. In the past few weeks, we started having limited communication with them.

This weekend was Halloween, and it is hard for us and our therapist was on vacation for two weeks prior and during Halloween. Therefore, that added another obstacle on to it. We had no therapist, no friends, and no family communication. Add in the equation, little or no sleep, 5 college classes, midterms and family issues. We felt that we did not have any way to seek support if needed.

Throughout our hibernation period from social contact, we deeply missed our friends, because for the most part they understand us better than anyone does. We decided to swallow our pride and apologize to them. It has been different with our friends because we lost five months with them, they have needed us and we were not there for them. We feel bad for not being there for them, but we cannot change the past. The only thing we can do is try to be a good friend right now in the present.

We spent the weekend with our best friend; it was good catching up. Watching intervention episodes, and just being ourselves. We have so much in common with this one friend, she understands DID because she is a survivor too. We have both had hard times recently and I wish I had not cut her off because I could have helped her. However, we realized that we could support her now and that is what we intend on doing.

The best part of my weekend was getting my new pets. My fish are pretty they are three boys. The boy’s names are Sigmund, Ivan and David. After psychologists of course! My friend has yet to name hers, but I am anxiously awaiting their names. Nevertheless, they arrived home safe and are now swimming freely.

As I start the week tomorrow and go back to therapy this week, I am trying to figure out my next move. Thinking about school, work and therapy. Am I in over my head? That I do not know. I think as long as I have people (friends) in my life that will support me no matter what I should be okay. I hope

Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne “Down”

“Down” went platinum and sold over a million copies in two months. He’s now the MOST successful UK urban artist in U.S. chart history! WOW.

more about “Down | Jay Sean | Music Video | MTV“, posted with vodpod

BUT…

YOU SHOULD READ THIS AWESOME THING BELOW WHILE WAITING FOR VIDEO TO LOAD…

Congrats to Jay, he’s aiite… BUT we should also recognize another UK artist who paved the way, CRAIG DAVID.

Some of you might remember Craig’s 2001 debut single “7 Days” which was DAT SONG in the U.S. when I was like a freshman in high school reaching #10 in the Billboard Hot 100. His second single “Fill Me In” was also highly received in the U.S. peaking at #15. However, his third single “Walking Away” which had reached #3 in the UK and #5 in Australia, MISSED the U.S. Billboard Top 40 and was the last of his singles to make it on the U.S. charts…

…And sadly, Craig David has sorta been forgotten in the U.S. ever since… (except Izumi, he has not forgotten).

That was 2001.

Today, almost nine years later, many do not realize he is still hugely successful in Europe and Asia! Example, his 2007 album “Trust Me” spotlighted charts in Japan hitting #5 and #18 in the UK AND French Albums Charts. AND his lead single “Insomnia” from his 2008 Greatest Hits Album peaked at #11 on the Japan Hot 100! Good work Craig!

BASICALLY OUR POINT IS THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS FALLING ASLEEP ON CRAIG DAVID. He is a truly talented artist and we have forgotten all about him. I mean, Jay Sean has the #1 single in the U.S. right now and before him was the Black Eyed Peas (#1 for 26 weeks straight!)…that’s messed up…but all I am saying is give Craig David another chance.

So nearing 2010, Nerds want to recommend Craig David to everyone. He’s got a brand new album coming soon. Cop it. Rip open the package and bump it. You will love it. Jay is aiite but Craig is DAT DUUDE! CRAIG GETS DOWN, DOWN, DOWN.

Hit jump to watch classic Craig David videos.

I SHOULD CALL THIS THE OFFICIAL CRAIG DAVID ARCHIVE (I swear there are more videos of Craig David on Youtube than Michael Jackson).

I’ve got to admit, “Down”, with Weezy, was a sick song. This one, I think, doesn’t have as good as a beat, but Sean Paul’s verse at 2:08 on brings me back.

Two of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop, plus Jay Sean. Off All or Nothing, out November 24th.

The past month’s been hectic for us at AAR.

Firstly, we released the debut single by math pop quartet Pharaohs , which recieved awesome reviews across the board. You can pick the whole thing on iTunes for 79p a track.

Also, Brummie skate punks All Or Nothing re-recorded their 2 tracks for the split CD with Chaos Days. The tracks sound so good, can’t wait for everyone to hear them! AON are also gonna be playing the Birmingham Slam Dunk festival alongside Funeral For A Friend, Fightstar, Kids In Glass Houses and a whole bunch of awesome bands.

Over the past week or so we’ve been sending out CDs for the Pharaohs EP – We’ve Tried Nothing And We’re All Out Of Ideas (7th November), and Tell It To The Marines debut digital single Fireworks (26th October).

On top of that I started Uni, which as well as being absolutely awesome, it’s currently taking up a lot of my time. I’ve not been as active as i should have been, but hopefully i’ll be able to multitask again soon!

Excerpt:

“Mara!” Her voice choked; the raspy words
burned like fire.

She searched the scene on hands and knees
in the silver moonlight. Lord, not Mara. Where is
she? She’s just a girl…please!

Footsteps crunched on the gravel-filled dirt.
Nowhere to hide, RuthAnne willed herself
invisible. Her hand closed around a fist-sized
rock. The bandit wouldn’t take her without a
fight.

He knelt down beside her. A large, rough
hand cupped her cheek in an all too familiar way.
“You’re awake. Thank God.”

With a ragged battle cry, RuthAnne lunged at
her would-be attacker with the stone, cracking
him just above the shoulder. He shied away from
the blow, and the lump of granite glanced off him.
With little effort, he peeled it from her fingers.
“You’re coming with me, whether you like it or
not.”

The brigand picked her up like a child and
marched her off to her doom. Terrified, she fought
and bucked while he carried her. Tears of
frustration streamed down her face; her hair, a
mass of golden curls, tumbled loose about her as
she thrashed in his arms. RuthAnne hammered
at him with ineffectual fists. He carried her so
easily, as if she were feather light, though he did
pin her arms close against her body.

“I’m not going to hurt you. I’m here to help.”
