SocialB was able to catch up with All Star Weekend during their stay in Los Angeles to find out more on their band name change, favorite comfort foods, Disney memories, and even learn Nate and Cameron’s secret handshake.

Newly signed to Hollywood Records, these gentlemen have been headlining their own shows across California as well as the Disney Cruise Line, and even performed with Justin Bieber this December.

Yeah, yeah. We see you.

Here’s something that might help in NBA refs regaining some credibility: According to the Orlando Sentinel, Dick Bavetta might be ready to call it a career when he’s finished leaving his mark on games this season. In case you missed it, the infamous Tim Donaghy said working with the 69-year-old Bavetta was “like pursuing a graduate degree in advanced game manipulation” in a tell-all that the league is currently trying to keep from being published. If Donaghy thinks you blow at calling games, then you really, really suck.

Donaghy claimed Bavetta has been the driving force behind several of the NBA’s most controversial games in recent years, including a pair that extended the Lakers’ playoff lives in elimination games against the Blazers and Kings in 2000 and 2002. However, perhaps the greatest of Donaghy’s revelations about Bavetta comes here (excerpt courtesy of Deadspin):

“Bavetta actually paid an American Airlines employee to watch all the games he worked and write down everything the TV commentators said about him. No matter how late the game was over, he’d wake her up for a full report. He loved the attention.”

That, of course, doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering Bavetta’s little display of stupidity and affection with fellow attention whore Charles Barkley at All-Star Weekend a few years back. Yeah, we see you guys…nobody cares.

Anyway, Bavetta calling it quits would certainly help. Can we get Steve Javie to hang ‘em up next?

This past weekend the NBA held its annual All Star Weekend.. One different theme from this weekend was that the game was held in none other than the gambling mecca of the world, Las Vegas. This marked the first time in which a city that didn’t host an NBA team, hosted its mid season All Star game. The always eclectic and extravagant city had a little bit extra boost this weekend from all the star power that arrived to see the best players in the world put on their usual no defense, dunking exhibition. Every one from Jay-Z to Puff Daddy, Wayne Newton, to David Hasslehoff were there. And you know that when David Hasslehoff shows up, it must be a big deal!
The weekend pretty much played out as it usually does. Black guy wins race. White guy wins shooting contest. Black guy wins dunking contest. Same old song and dance from years past. The major difference from this weekend to me, was the excitement of the Vegas community to have pro sports in their fine city, if only for a weekend. Big signs were hung from sides of enormous casinos. Lady Liberty at New York, New York Casino and Hotel donned a massive Dwight Howard #12 All Star Jersey. Even the mayor was out campaigning, although this time he wasn’t trying to win an election, but instead showing off all his fabulous city has to offer.
With all this excitement surrounding a rather meaningless game, one has to wonder.. Why isn’t there even one pro sports team that calls Las Vegas home? Las Vegas gets roughly 40 million tourists a year. Add that to the 2 million or so people that live there, and you have, in theory, one of the larger cities in the States. With teams all around the United States clamoring over how to afford a new stadium and teams going bankrupt because their city cant, or chooses not to, support the local club, why not VEGAS!? A city that already has a plot set aside by that very same mayor to build a stadium should a team arrive. A city that could easily build a privately funded, state of the art, stadium. A city that got decked out for an EXHIBITION game…
The one glaring reason why no league has chosen to put a pro franchise in Las Vegas is simple.. As stated earlier, IT IS the gambling mecca of the world. Sports has such a phobia of gambling desecrating the purity of their sport, that they are all afraid to even give Vegas a chance. I think these leagues are missing the point. Gambling is everywhere! People gamble over everything. If people want to gamble on something, anything, they can find the means to do so. Hell, there are web sites that even allow you to bet on who will win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars or Who will be our next President. If people were going to cheat at gambling in the NBA or NFL, it would have happened already. If people had that little dignity to throw a game because they could win large heaps of cash, point shaving would be rampant by now.
The point is, from Minnesota, I can bet on the Los Angeles Lakers. I can bet on any team while sitting at home in my skivvys. Having a pro team is Las Vegas would be no different from having a sports team anywhere else in the US, except the fact that there would now be pro sports in a city desperately longing for it.
Maybe a solution for all those opposed would be a ban on wagers involving the Home team. It may be a bit hypocritical but if thats what it takes for that city to have a sports franchise, then so be it.
Think about this.. now besides all the glitz, glamor, and excitement that Las Vegas has to offer, they would also have a major sports team to root for. Going to games would be an experience… like how its supposed to be. A entire city built for entertainment would have another chip in the big game.
This weekend was definitely the time to be in Vegas to watch the NBA showcase its best and brightest young stars. Just think if it were like that every week for 8 months out of every year.
Intriguing, I’d say..

The 2009 Home Rune Derby just ended with Prince Fielder winning with 6 home runs in the final round.

The 2009 Home Rune Derby just ended with Prince Fielder winning with 6 home runs in the final round. I first want to start this post by thanking Prince for hitting 6 in the final round as I had the “6 HR’s or more” on ESPN’s Streak for the Cash. My streak is still alive!

The Derby had lots of homeruns, lots of super stars, lots of money given to charity but still was missing something. I still can’t quite put my finger on why, but it was lacking the excitement of years past.

One thing I noticed was you really didn’t see many of the players lying around rooting on their colleagues in the derby. Some of my favorite moments were when David Ortiz was running around, laughing and cheering everyone on in years past.

The celebrity softball game is also on and it seems to be lacking as well. If All Star Week is supposed to be one of the most entertaining parts of the season I can see why baseballs attendance is lacking so much in the regular season.

Gen Y, being the multi taskers they are don’t seem to have the same love for baseball as past generations. With faster, more active sports out there (basketball, football) and new alternative Gen Y focused sports gaining major popularity (lacrosse, UFC, extreme sports) baseball has seemed to fall behind the times.

Major League Baseball needs to do some revamping; with attendance sliding, the MLB needs to do more than just lower ticket prices. I suggest they start by spicing up All Star Weekend, then they need to spice up the overall baseball experience.

So I want to post this question to everyone out there. What did you think about the Derby and what can The MLB do to increase Gen Y interest in baseball again?

Everybody has their own ideas on how to spruce up the MLB All-Star festivities. The Home Run Derby i

Everybody has their own ideas on how to spruce up the MLB All-Star festivities. The Home Run Derby is fun, the All-Star game is ok, the Future’s Game is more interesting watching a year after it was played when some of the players are in the MLB, and the celebrity softball game is must-see T.V. Who doesn’t want to see Andy Richter take a few hacks? Wait, nobody wants to see that? Ok, then let’s make some changes. Obviously a skills competition would be nice but then there is the talk about how the players who are payed millions of dollars to throw a ball not wanting to make one extra throw or run around the bases one extra time. It is too much of an injury risk to do their job. So scrap that but there is still some work we can do AND save money at the same time.

Take the afternoon of the All-Star game. You want me to wait until eight o’clock to see a baseball game? I don’t think so. Implement the No Stars game. Take the worst players on every team and have them fight for their jobs. The managers would be the managers of the worst team in their respective leagues (This year Cleveland’s Eric Wedge and Washington’s Manny Acta). The hapless team that is defeated has all of their Major League contracts voided on the spot. You can have a big ceremony where Bud Selig voids their checks. The rules would be simple, the losing team’s players cannot play in the majors for the rest of the year. Oh and the losing manager? Fired on the spot. Tell me you wouldn’t watch Jason Giambi and his .192 batting average fight for his spot. It would inspire him to regrow his stache. It would be the most intense game all year.

That stache would fill AAA stadiums across the country

It would also save money. Giambi makes $4 million this year, Oakland would love to take that off of the payroll. Even the teams that had to keep their players would make money off of the T.V. deal that would inevitably come from it. This is made for ESPN 2. Do you know what’s playing at 1:00 on ESPN 2 the day of the All-Star game? A Major League Lacrosse replay. Not even a live game! I guarantee this outdraws the entire season of MLL.

I know what you’re thinking, the MLBPA would never agree to this. That’s probably correct. HOWEVA, I’m not saying that the losers can’t ever play baseball again, they just can’t play in the MLB for the rest of the year. They can play in AAA or overseas. Most of the players are going to be sent down in a month anyway, this game is just helping them along. With all these players in AAA the minor league teams would draw bigger crowds to their games and all of the sudden a snowball effect occurs. With all this extra money from minor league attendence and the television deal the owners would have more money to spend on players. With the excess cash burning a hole in their pocket they over pay for players and instantly the average MLB player wage goes up. That is what we in business know as a net gain everybody. In this economy you have to make all of the money you can get. Look for No Stars in 2010 everybody.

I’m going to try to keep this short and sweet…like me (shut it Erin) because I am watching the Nuggets beat the shizz out of the Mavs. Again…please, if there is a God, let Cuban (again, Mark, not a real Cuban) go ape-shit. Please. Ok, back to this weekend in Vegas. It was a pretty kick ass girls trip. Here is the run down…80’s music, drinking, razors (ouch!), drinking, grapes, sour cream face (I’ll explain later Roc), empty glasses, buffet, mimosas, BEAUTIFUL wedding, banana hair clip, dramatic mother of the groom, accents, beer drinking, barfing, drinking, e-bay, drinking, drinking….80’s music. You lost? Well I guess you had to be there…as always. Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Steward! Glad I could be there! Coincidently…I am going to start talking basketball. Shocking I know. The night of the wedding we decided to go over to the MGM after the Pac whoever fight was over. I don’t know who fought but I heard it was a KO in the 2nd round and I don’t care yadda yadda boxing is lame. So were over there and who do I see playing a little game of craps? Roger Mason Jr. from the shamed San Antonio Spurs. Of course I got a picture because I am a star struck a-hole. I also let him know last time I was in Vegas was All Star Weekend and I bet on him for the 3-point contest. And he lost. So I told him basically I felt like he owed me five dollars. He laughed and said, “Yeah..sorry about that!” I’ll count that as pay back enough.

If you were a dead ringer for Ron Jeremy, you'd be emotive too. Stan Van Gundy (The portly Magic

If you were a dead ringer for Ron Jeremy, you'd be emotive too.

Stan Van Gundy (The portly Magic coach, not the skinny ex-coach-turned-broadcaster), has hot fire to spit at all times. After taking on Shaq less than a month ago (and 100% without a doubt winning when he said, “Shaq’s a sensitive guy”), he’s going after the Knicks organization for not hiring Patrick Ewing as their head coach.

Okay, this is not really much of a story. It’s mostly an excuse to talk about the Van Gundy’s. Patrick is probably equipped to be a big man coach (Yao Ming and Dwight Howard are his most notable projects, and theyre the consensus 1-2 centers in the league), but he’s not yet ready to be a head coach, probably. He seems to not have Van Gundy’s own brand of externally directed competitiveness yet. And Phil Jackson he aint. I’m sure he’ll get hired in a few years. Meanwhile, let’s bring him to DC and have him cut his teeth on JaVale McGee and the rest of our clowns (I think an ESPN article alludes to this possibility, but I can’t remember which one).

Anyway, I love the Van Gundy’s, they are an endless font of criticism and vitality. This is part of what makes the NBA so great … in the NFL, the only off-field discourse involve steroids, cheating, crime, and whiny players quitting on their teams. In the NBA, there’s constant internal criticism, conspiracy theories, and trash talk. All Star Weekend, long known as the Black Super Bowl (Thank you Simmons & Adande), is incredibly entertaining, and clearly designed for the fans’ enjoyment, as this year’s inclusion of a HORSE game between KD, OJ Mayo, and Joe Johnson obviates. It is the opposite of the No Fun League. I hope this doesn’t die when Shaquille retires and Kobe loses his vitriol. Though with this supremely unfunny bowling clip, The Big Insecurity is definitely showing his age.

Update: Totally forgot to make my primary point … the Knicks got Mike D’Antoni, only the wizard behind the most entertaining playstyle on the planet. What did they want Patrick Ewing for? Defense and rebounding can go to hell, this is New York City.

25 jaar NBA Slam Dunk Contest

1984-1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest

People don’t realize this. The NBA is in serious financial trouble. Every so often a sportswriter will talk about it in passing, but Simmons, not exactly a real sportswriter, hits upon the all-important negative vibe in NBA circles. He’s willing to pass along the vibe and the whispers, rather than the facts from unnamed sources.

Maybe, selfishly, this will increase the chances for Seattle to get a new NBA team. It raises questions, at least, about drastic changes in the major sports landscape. We’ve already seen Arena Football cancel a season and the WNBA shutter a team (even while MLS expands at a rapid rate).

At the same time, this column from Sports Illustrated captures some of the beauty of basketball, and of sportswriting in general. Can’t help but end with some hope.

Richie Scheuermann | KentNewsNet NBA All-Star weekend is a time to sit back and relish the superior

Richie Scheuermann | KentNewsNet

NBA All-Star weekend is a time to sit back and relish the superior athleticism and insane style choices of basketball’s greatest players. In this blog, I’m going to express my opinion on this year’s events.

First of all, Shaq’s intro to the All-Star Game on Sunday was easily the single most entertaining thing I have ever witnessed, and it was definitely the catalyst that drove the West to a victory.

That said, the rest of the events weren’t all that great, but it was still a good weekend.

Kevin Durant had himself a fun weekend.

He set a scoring record in the Rookie-Sophomore game, putting up 46 points, and followed that up by winning the new H-O-R-S-E event in come-from-behind fashion.

Derek Rose was very impressive as he took down the superior Mo Williams (Cleveland bias … I apologize) in the Skills Challenge. And did anyone notice Rose’s dunk at the end of his run? Where was his “preliminary” entry to the 2010 Slam Dunk Contest?

I always look forward to the 3-point shootout, and this year’s was just … lame. Daequan Cook won, but nobody really stood out. Roger Mason Jr. (my pick) was a dud. Put Dirk or Ray Allen in that contest and nobody would have stood a chance.

The dunk contest was, as usual, the best event of the weekend, but it also looked pretty rehearsed.

J.R. Smith came in as a replacement for Rudy Gay and just didn’t have enough creativity. Rudy Fernandez took about 45 attempts on his second dunk, but he made it look darn good when he finally stuck it. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the final round.

Then, Saturday night became the Dwight Howard/Nate Robinson show.

Dwight Howard walked off the court and into a phone booth to sport his now famous Superman cape. Then another hoop was rolled out so Howard could dunk on 12 feet, only to get a crappy pass off the backboard and slam it through with ease. Honestly, it didn’t even look like he was even trying to jump that high … all the more reason to get pumped for next year.

Nate Robinson came out sporting a “Kryptonate” shirt and his lucky green New York Knicks jersey underneath. Somehow, the little 5-foot-9 fella sprang right over the 6-foot-10 Howard and dunked it for the snapshot of the weekend. (Can I just say that Dwight Howard and every other basketball player who has ever been jumped over should be paid a large sum of money for being able to stand in place while another man drags his groin across their head?)

The All-Star game itself was probably the most disappointing event of the entire weekend. Seriously, two seconds of Shaq’s dance were more entertaining than the entire game. The West cruised to a 146-119 win over the East. Kobe and Shaq were awarded co-MVPs. How Chris Paul did not win All-Star Game MVP continues to befuddle me: 14 points, 14 assists, and seven rebounds. Come on. Who gets 14 assists in an All-Star Game?

All in all, this year’s All-Star weekend was pretty mediocre, but there were a few highlights. The only question for next year’s game is: who’s got dibs on the Jabbawockeez?

i absolutely love dwight howard and after the dunk contest last year, this was my background picture

i absolutely love dwight howard and after the dunk contest last year, this was my background picture on my computer for months.

so this year i was looking forward to watching him dunk again even though i knew it would be really hard for him to top last year. but i just love watching him on tv cause his personality is so fun. anyway, i thought j.r and rudy fernandez did really well. it was unfortunate that they didn’t get their dunks on the first couple of tries because i think the novelty of their dunks wore out with each failed try and after they exhausted their 2 minutes, the audience just wanted to see them complete a dunk. it basically came down to big man vs little man. and i love nate cause he plays for the knicks and cause he’s 5′9 and gets some crazy height on his dunks. it’s amazing how high that guy can jump. but i have to say, his 2nd dunk in the first rounds where he jumped on wilson chandler’s back was lame. if nate can jump over spud webb, then stepping on his teammate’s back is not very impressive nor creative

L A M E

dwight howard’s notable dunk in the first round was when he had a 12ft high basketball rim brought onto the courts by a forklift. but of course he had to first transform into superman in the phone booth before dunking. he came out donning his superman cape and a very tight jersey. and then in the final round, nate robinson came out dressed in green from head to toe including his lime green kryptonite shoes. very appropriate in keeping with the superman story. dwight started off with a carom off the right side of the backboard where he pulled his arms way back behind his shoulder and literally slammed that ball in. the commenters said, “it’s SO ugly in here” while reducing nate to this face right here:

he ended with a tribute to jordan where he flew from the foul line and made a fierce one handed dunk. the reason he lost was probably because he didn’t’ make this dunk look “pretty” enough. it’s all about the presentation. and cause he was nice enough to let nate dunk over him. i thought that was pretty big of dwight howard to help nate with his storyline of beating superman.

no need for a description with this picture. although, even though this dunk looks amazing, you can see that he lifted himself over dwight howard. on top of that, this dunk was very unoriginal since we’ve already seen him dunk over spud webb in 2006. but again, you have to give him madd props since dwight howard is like 7 feet tall. i think he’s just bitter from last year when gerald green jumped over him. haha

—–

another note worthy part of the all star weekend was of shaq dancing with jabbawockeez. he was sooo good. it was definitely the highlight of the weekend.

—–

and LASTLY, i just wanted to post a picture of dwayne wade and dwight howard. they made me laugh all through the rookie/soph game.

After watching the Slam Dunk Competition this past weekend, I felt the need to see some of the classic dunk-offs from the 80s. Needless to say, there were some great looking uniforms back then, and dunks too. I initially wanted to highlight the Indiana Pacers’ 1986 away jersey, but then I stumbled across this beauty…

That’s the 1986 Slam Dunk Competition field. Ya boy Spud Webb took home the hardware that year. However, it’s Terence Stansbury’s uni (far left), that I am more concerned with. So fresh.

Don’t remember Terence Stansbury? A little something called the “Statue of Liberty” may refresh your memory. Here is Stansbury, donning a Seattle Supersonics uni, in the 1987 Slam Dunk Competition…
