With us now a month and six games in the game, so we all have a good look at our summer recruits, so

With us now a month and six games in the game, so we all have a good look at our summer recruits, so for this article, I will be giving my view on who has or hasn’t impressed.

Jonathan Smith: Perhaps a victim of Paolo Di Canio’s tinkering as he quests to find to winning formula. Strong in the tackle and general workhorse, but distribution skills are suspect. Verdict- Decent buy for £30,000, but likely to find himself down the pecking order.

Joe Devera: Rave reviews from Barnet supporters ensured high expectations, following his move to the County Ground. However, he is yet to cut the mustard, with his inexperienced partner, Aden Flint, saving his corn on occasion. Verdict- Must do better, a move to right-back could be beneficial.

Raffaele De Vita: This season’s scapegoat, but I believe he has talent and just, something about him. Struggled alongside Billy Bodin – hardly surprising given the imbalance in the partnership. His goal at Ashton Gate ensured a memorable win. Verdict- Decent substitute option, with his brilliant work ethic.

Alberto Comazzi: A combination of suspension and injuries have limited his game time thus far. Been part of an unsettled and disrupted defence, although he has contributed to that. Not outstanding, but not awful at the same time, considering he has probably not yet settled. Verdict- Ask me in a month

Mattia Lanzano: Came in for his debut, versus Rotherham following Phil Smith’s poor form and is likely to take the starting berth. A slight fumble, picking the ball out the net twice, plus run to the half-way line to celebrate like an over-excited child was his highlights from Saturday. Verdict- Following Smith’s poor form, I say give him another chance.

Oliver Risser: Had high expectations on his shoulders, following his signing – although they have yet to be met and his debut goal his only notable moment. Has been absent recently, due to an injury, although may find it tough to get back in with Simon Ferry and Alan McCormack forming a good partnership. Verdict- Definitely shown potential and may need more time to settle.

Ibrahim Atiku: Yet to have appeared in a competitive match and hasn’t even made the bench recently. Looked poor and lightweight during pre-season and would be surprised to ever see him play for us. Verdict- A mistake, but not our worst signing of the summer.

Alan Connell: Very pleased when we signed him, given his record last season at Grimsby. Looked out of favour, after being hauled off after 30 minutes against Southampton. He has however, turned it around with an inspirational appearance versus Rotherham – bagging a brace. Verdict- Should prove to be an excellent signing.

Mehdi Kerrouche: Shown good ability with his free-kick against Southampton; has also looked lively and unpredictable in the games he has played – a difficult player to defend against. Still needs to find more composure in front of goal to make a real impact. Verdict- May find himself dropped for Connell, but a good signing.

Alessandro Cibocchi: His absent has left some of us wondering if he was the next Milan Misun, although it was nothing more than an injury and confusion with the Italian FA. Looked good out of position against Rotherham, shoring up the defence over the finishing line. Verdict- Should have a chance soon at full-back, with Callum Kennedy’s mediocre performances.

Etienne Esajas: Missed the opening games through an injury he picked up pre-season. Been fairly anonymous in the games he has played and as a consequence, was dropped for Lander Gabilondo. Verdict- With Matt Ritchie nailing down one wing, he will have to work hard to get back in the team.

Alan McCormack: I was initially unsure of him joining, seeing as we had numbers within central midfield. He has since proved me wrong, showing his quality at this level - excellent tackler and compliments Simon Ferry’s creativity well. Verdict- Need to play more simple football, but a good player.

Lander Gabilondo: Impressed, when coming off the bench against Oxford for his debut, nearly making himself an instant hero. Has looked poor and ineffective since and a impact role, may be more suitable until fully settled. Verdict- Showed the good and the bad already, so is hard to judge, until fully settled.

Leon Clarke: Only spent a fortnight at the club, but has already sandwiched himself below Joey Beachamp and above Tommy Mooney, in an unpopularity contest. Poor attitude, and isn’t even that good, so will be glad to get rid. Verdict- Had to many players with poor attitude last season, so Paolo Di Canio has made the right move.

Lukas Magera: Having played in the Europa League and had international caps for a decent country, Magera was very much our marqee player. Shown clever movement and class, but is still very unfit, which is a major hinderance. Verdict- Shown potential and should be a very good signing.

I will also be completing an edition in October, to give a further view into how our signings have performed.
